Working with Apollo when you have really bad medical trauma is, really confusing. Cuz I'll be out here having a full on flashbacks and panic attacks about just sitting in waiting room, but have an altar dedicated to not only the god of healing and sickness but the also the father of the dude who's staff is the symbol for doctors and hospitals and shit.

I started worshipping him for more artistic side as a dancer, painter, writer, artist but have really been questioning things around his healing side after getting sick. I'll probably need to see a doctor about this as it's just getting worse but that's an incredibly painful and exhausting thing for me. Some parts of me wonder if he might be able to help with this at all, and others are too terrified of I'm not even sure what.

The point is that illiteracy disenfranchises people, renders important things like going to the doctor inaccessible.

It makes it easier to exploit people because to they don't have ready access to information.

It makes people easier to control because tools they need to get ahead, or even just get by, are not available to them.

It makes it harder to organize and to learn.

And yes, it makes it very hard to get a job. It makes people desperate for a job, willing to accept unsafe conditions and ridiculously low pay because they have no other option.

It does not benefit society as a whole, but it absolutely benefits many employers and politicians who exploit people's lack of options and lack of information access.

i think it's pretty disingenuous to claim that illiteracy is secretly beneficial to the ruling class lmao. lots of assumptions baked in there about the putative value of written information specifically, and about written information as some kind of bastion of truth to power (known voice of the people, the publishing industry). but more to the point it just seems profoundly detached from the extreme hostility that, say, the entire job market systematically exhibits toward illiterate people and even low-literacy people. nothing about our current society is set up to accommodate those who cannot or do not read, like literally this renders people instantly socially marginal and you can see it happening if you've ever seen someone struggling with, say, reading and filling out forms at the doctors office or for a driving test, not to even mention the interpersonal ramifications like the general widespread assumption that reading ability = intelligence = worth. there is no social force or mandate from above demanding illiteracy---quite the opposite in fact
