I know there's been a few similar posts here already, but man, I saw something and now I'm annoyed.
I'm so so so so tired of a discussion surrounding character's genders, sexualities, the way they dress or look as if there was an actual canon version of them. (And FUCK - when did Tumblr cared about canon anyway??) Now, don't get me wrong. I adore long analysis of every single detail presented in TMA on those topics. But when it comes to hcs? Let people have nice things and relate to characters in the ways they want to. So many people use it as a way to cope with their own identities! It's a very important thing when enjoying media! Stop crushing their souls!
Just remember the one simple rule of - fanon is fanon, it's not written in stone and you can adjust it or even (I know, for some people it sounds impossible) enjoy multiple versions of it!!
The Martin I have in my head when I'm listening to TMA is completely different than the most popular fanon, but it doesn't matter - I still love the fluffy, comfy, cute boy (or any other gender people assign them) that people seem to settle on. I also imagine Tim in a severely different way than most, but guess what - I love the arts, comics, and animations with him done by other people.
It's like reading a book and then getting an adaptation. Not everything is how your mind's eye saw it, but it's still pretty cool to see it.
Also, let's be for fucking real, fandom IS the space for it. Don't waste the creativity of others to boost your own ego by arguing that your depiction is "the right version", just scroll past the content you don't like. It's quite literally not targeted towards you.
It's disappointing to see those discouraging posts, especially in this fandom that actually finally has its source in a creation made by people who care about diversity and treat everything with utmost respect. Alex wouldn't be happy about some sad fuck yelling at someone for drawing black!Jon or trans!Martin. Imagine he saw some shit like that.
tl;dr: don't be a dick, let people enjoy the characters the way they want to, imagine the disappointment on the faces of Alex and Jonny every time you try to waste your time on being an asshole
AGREE idc much what ppl do with fanon. I have preferences which is 100% fine but oh my god going after someone for not sharing that is so stupid and wrong - rosette
heavy agree because yeah . it's fanon . let people make what they want to make . - deceit

Trans-Stephanie-in-honour-of-Viktor-Hargreeves just made me think of more trans batkid ideas—
Something something trans Red Hood au where everyone is much more confused cause Jay transitioned after being revived
Something something trans Tim clinging onto the Robin name with Red Robin despite aging out because he’s scared he doesn’t pass well enough that if he gave up the well known “boy wonder” mantle villains/the media would assume he was a girl (this edges close to sad boi Tim vibes but I think it could work)
Something something Dick grew up in the circus and couldn’t care less about gender. What’s that, why do I need one?
Something something after changing her costume to show part of her face and hair, Cass finds she misses the androgyny of the full hood
Something something a binding vigilante teen ends up wheezing within range of dad-to-trans-kids-Batman, and the next time they see Batman he gives them a lecture about binding safety that ends with giving them a better binder (or a gift certificate or smth) (funnier if it’s a random vigilante so it’s not Bruce giving a lecture, it’s Batman)
Something something a batkid using their costume as an opportunity to really present how they want, designing their costume to really downplay dysphoria-triggering aspects of themself, hell, using voice modulators in their costume to sound “right”, etc. Fighting villains might mean literal mortal danger, but they’re using the right pronouns and not dead naming them sooooo
I love all of this but trans Jason is literally one of my favourite things like Jason acting extra pissed that Bruce didn't recognise him like he didn't change that much Bruce come on can't even recognise his own dead son and also the reason why Dick designed the Robin outfit like he did was so he could incorporate a binder into the outfit

I thought it would be so fun to make picrews of the og Archives crew (ft. Gerry and pre. G*rtruded Micheal). Picrews themselves are such fun but making characters from them is great.
Basically me messing around and telling you my hcs and how i see them :)
First we got Jon.
Tumblr media
Nonbinary and Bi (and ace of course). He has a pretty rigid style at first, turtle necks and blazers (and or button ups and blazers). I found a lot of him being Jewish like as hc and why not add a star of David. He has the worm scars. I love jon with long hair ( at work it stays in a professional bun until hes alone he also keeps pens in it) and i gave him a little piercing, oh and glasses.
Next up we got our man Tim
Tumblr media
Hes bi (and sometimes i like him being trans masc) and he dyed the tips of his hair pink with Sasha. He has the worm scars but i also like to think he was some acne scars too. He has a short sleeve button up (Hawaiian shirt) but its pink and strawberries to match his hair. He has a split brow and ear piercings all the way up. He wears sunglasses bc hes cool.
Our Gorl Sasha
Tumblr media
Shes trans fem
I really was not feeling the og one i did for her and kinda did what everone else did for her. Shes bi and dyed the tips of her hair pink with Tim. She has gold glasses and earings. Kinda like Jon she has a professional style at work but its nuch more layed back, like she wears button ups and blazers but its not buttoned all the way up and she wears more colorful button ups. (No worm bites for sad reasons)
Next up our resident bad boy in good boy clothing Mahtin
Tumblr media
Hes Gay (like tim i do like him being trans masc a lot). This picrew doesn't let you add plus size bodys (they do however have a wide array of noses, hair styles, and you can add like wheel chairs, nose tubes, and hearing aids). He has brownish red short curly hair. He also has a layed back professional style with a button up and a nice sweater on top. He also wears those brown and yellow glasses (the ones that kinda looks like tigers eye im not sure if it has a special name). He has worm bites.
Also Martin with facial hair/ stubble rights
Our first special guest goth king Gerry
Tumblr media
Hes trans masc and bi. He has long dyed black hair but his blond roots are showing. He wears heavy jewelry, multiple necklaces, earrings, and he has mouth and nose piercings. He wears what he wants bc he doesn't work at the institute and therefore doesn't have to dress professionally, if he wears fishnets, leather jackets, platforms and crop tops its not in jonha's Elias' jurisdiction to say no.
Next my favorite avatar and boy who deserved better Micheal <3
Tumblr media
Hes gay and trans masc, hes very fem tho he fluctuates. He has shoulder length curly blond hair in the 70s/80s style. Hes already lanky (mans a plank) pre g*rtrude-ified. He layers up and wears earth tones like browns and such, his jacket has the elbow bits (patches??).
This was fun i really like this picrew, heres the link

TMA fics ive thought about/am writing
Crack fic where mister spider is martins adopted father and Jon wasn’t eaten as a kid bc Martin had a crush
time travel fix it but it’s season 5 jon in season 1 and it’s 99.99 percent just him being allowed to process his trauma
Martin and jon laughing about the fact they’re both trans and that martin had originally been planning on choosing the name John after keats
Ghost martin haunting jons flat, occasionally possessing him to take naps and eat, and jon stubbornly refusing to acknowledge he can in fact see this ghost and that this is weird
one of the boys (undecided) sends their consciousness back to season one and accidently body jack the other, there by trying to A) seduce themself as the other without getting too weirded out (oh yeah, did i mention the other persons consciousness is still in there? Because it absolutely is and they are just going “wtf are you doing with my life”) B) save the world and convince the others to do things that will aid that goal without telling them whats going on C) Don’t be suspicious.
cat boy jon
Martin is beholding and has been all along, just forgot it, and it makes many of his interactions with jon very awkward bc like that’s his archivist thats a part of his fucking BRAIN wtf but also crush is still a thing WHAT
Web Martin but season one and he meets Jon for the first time in the tunnels and temporarily kidnaps him to heal worm scars
Based directly on @fakecrfan au of martin x tapes where beholding is in love with martin and uses all of the institute staff to try and woo him and stalk him as he freaks out that all his coworkers have been replaced or possessed or SOMETHING! Elias tried to tell him how attractive his bone structure was. Tim and Sasha keep trying to convince him tape recorders are sexy. Jon’s nice to him???????????????????
Dom sub?
Martin Time travel fixes it alone but refuses to actually interact with the people he’s saving so from their pov its “WTF. My job burned down and our boss blinded, and the next day all four of us got calls for the same job that none of us applied to” and also he’s in a band
I ALMOST FORGOT TO SAY MER MARTIN FUCK! He may be a giant mermaid i am undecided on that sorry i can not help my little gt heart
Jon finds his entire consciousness stuck in the tapes but doesn’t know that’s where he is, him and martin go on quest to try and find out what’s going on
Beholding Jon but like. Less monster more just general creepy.
CORRUPTION MARTIN BABY!!!!!!! THIS BAD BOY CAN FIT SO MUCH LETS HIMSELF GET INTO TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS IN HIM!
Selkie au possibly? Had it planned forgot for who
Ghost Martin AGAIN but he has no idea he’s dead and has been haunting the archives the whole time bc WHY did they have “you didn’t die here did you?” ONLY TO HAVE LIKE THREE FICS OF GHOST MARTIN IT’S LUDICRIOUS
leitner of small your archivist
borrower jon but everyone knows about borrowers in this universe
EMPATH JON EMPATH JON EMPATH JON!!!!! HE’S LIKE THAT WITH MARTIN BC STOP GETTING YOUR SADNESS ALL OVER ME IT’S UPSETTING PLEASE JUST GO AWAY I CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS RN and also he seems so bad at emotions bc he can’t tell what he is magically knowing they feel and what is just body langue or whatever so he makes up for it by pretending to get zero emotions ever
Martin literally turns into a spider
beholding martin again but this time he’s like actually beholding and never been human and also still in love with jon so it’s spooky. He also does not understand why his archivist is unhappy with the apocalypse and demands he take back his gifts of more eyes. He thought they were rather cute >:(
Martin is unsettling but in really mundane funny ways. Example: they get stuck Michaels corridors where the doors won’t open, and he casually pulls an entire doorknob out of his pocket. Jon gets hurt and he whips out an entire liter of blood he just happened to have on him. Is he supernatural? Nope! Is this ever explained? Also no! He is just like that the little weirdo
Good omens crossover where crowley and azi are certain jon and martin are an angel and demon but can’t settle on which is which, jon is certain they’re avatars, and martin realizes half way through what’s going on but purposely stirs the pot bc it’s really funny
Aro sasha and everyone being unsettled by not sasha having a bf for reasons they can’t figure out :’(
again inspired by @fakecrfan but martin x tapes season 4 and it’s just the tapes very little possession literally just tape recorders trying to seduce him poorly would be entirely crack
((feel free to ask about or talk about any of these please Im dying. If I post these I will try and remember to link them here))

What are your favorite movies? I saw you tagging Dirty Dancing so which other ones would you recommend?
!!!! so! anon you may not know this but i’m actually a mass communication major with a concentration in film studies, so this is gonna be a LONG list lmao. i have a collection of 200+ DVDs, but i won’t list every single one of those haha
list is gonna be under the cut!
my favorite film of all time is my own private idaho (1991, dir. gus van sant). it’s a drama about an unhoused gay sex worker with narcolepsy and his quest to find his estranged mother. extremely sad, but really fucking good. starring river phoenix and keanu reeves.
runner-up for my favorite film is jack and the cuckoo-clock heart (2013, dir. stéphanie berla and mathias malzieu). this is an animated musical from france that's based on a concept album by the band dionysos, and it's a gorgeous film to look at. if you like the work of henry selick or tim burton, you'll probably really like jack and the cuckoo-clock heart. it's a story about a boy with a delicate clock for a heart who falls in love even though he's not supposed to. the music slaps and the film is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.
i don't watch a ton of comedies, but i'd have to say my favorite comedic film i've seen in a very long time is dr. strangelove, or how i learned to stop worrying and love the bomb (1964, dir. stanley kubrick). you've probably heard of this movie, as it's considered a classic, but it's still worth the recommendation. funniest movie about nuclear annihilation i've ever seen and holds up even 55 years later.
while we're on the subject of "movies you've probably already heard of but need to watch anyways": pan's labyrinth (2006, dir. guillermo del toro). del toro is one of my favorite contemporary filmmakers (i highly recommend his 2017 film the shape of water if you haven't already seen it) and is the master of the grown-up fairytale. pan's labyrinth is a fucked up movie. it's scary, both because of its monsters (the pale man still gives me shivers) and because of its humans (the film takes place in fascist spain in 1944; suffice it to say some of the characters are reprehensible people). it's a spellbinding film.
let's move on to something more lighthearted. i am not joking when i say that mamma mia! (2008, dir. phyllida lloyd) and mamma mia! here we go again (2018, dir. ol parker) are two of my favorite films of all time. yes, they're corny and silly and the timeline makes no goddamn sense (i could write essays about why the timeline makes no sense...), but they make me feel joy like no other film series can. the second one is leagues better than the first in my opinion (mostly because pierce brosnan doesn't sing at all in the second one), but they're both worth a watch if you just want some good old-fashioned campy fun.
last of these that i'll describe: moonlight (2016, dir. barry jenkins). you have probably heard of moonlight. but i will hammer home that if you are at all interested in the art of filmmaking, you need to see moonlight. i've seen moonlight and i've seen citizen kane, and in my opinion moonlight is better. moonlight tells the story of a young black man's coming of age and self-discovery. it is beautiful and it is heartbreaking and it is honest. i can't count how many times i've seen it.
more films that i strongly recommend: brokeback mountain (2005, dir. ang lee), barbarella: queen of the galaxy (1968, dir. roger vadim), american pop (1981, dir. ralph bakshi), inception (2010, dir. christopher nolan), do the right thing (1989, dir. spike lee), dope (2015, dir. rick famuyiwa), moonrise kingdom (2012, dir. wes anderson), roma (2018, dir. alfonso cuarón), the iron giant (1999, dir. brad bird), and beasts of the southern wild (2012, dir. benh zeitlin).
EDIT: i don’t have time to look up the director or release year now but i forgot. orlando starring tilda swinton. immortal trans main character. it slaps.

ALRIGHT
here’s my full Stranger Avatar Sasha Archivist timeline:
(also, thanks to @artbyblastweave for being so interested in my lil au!)
SEASON ONE
sasha james is hired as the head archivist of the magnus institute!
her assistants are jon, tim, and martin
tim takes the thematic role of martin (aka getting tormented by my worm wife jane, and stays in the archives)
sasha reads thru statements and is a skeptic! she really does not believe it’s real until jane comes along.
“tim……………………..did you die here?”
“no, but every time i come to work i die a little more inside.”
cute timsha moment in the supply closet tho.
until martin kool-aid-mans through the door and gets them out of there
jon used to work in artefact storage so he hides in there. he’ll be fine
i actually can’t remember how they all get out but they do it KKJSDGFJHD
sasha takes everyone’s statements. tim is fucked up, martin is also fucked up, jon is actually fine though he seems pretty normal about this whole situation most definitely.
sasha realizes this is a bit more than a regular archivist job.
SEASON TWO
sasha gets paranoid of course. she learns more about gertrude because she never got the chance to meet her
she takes a statement from a guy named michael shelley. weird dude. then helen shows up :)
jon is most definitely himself he is just a normal regular grumpy jon i swear :)
sasha starts to manifest her powers a little bit. she doesn’t know it, but she is an avatar of the stranger, and a prisoner of the eye.
she starts to notice more things about jon? similar to this comic but with jon
eventually she + tim + martin help get jon out of the grip of the NotJon. this is my au and i get to choose who dies (it’s no one because i miss the s1 archival assistants too much).
jon is pretty fucked up from this though and at like a season-3-tim mindset already.
fucking goddamn leitner avatar of the fucking whore shows up to trap the NotJon in one of his shitty fucking novels. fuck this guy tho
he’s like Sasha We Must Talk and shes like okay but stay 8 ft away from me at all times you bitch
she leaves the room for 10 minutes and pipe murder occurs. good riddance
wait are the cops in the season i genuinely can’t remember. if they are, their roles don’t change very much. melanie and sasha feud, battle of the bi queens
SEASON THREE:
uh oh! girlie’s be framed for murder! she crashes at her ex gf georgie’s flat. also the admiral is there don’t think i would EVER cut him out of this story
(also jon is georgie’s ex too because i think that would be fun JDHBFHS)
sasha learns abt an upcoming web ritual (mirroring the unknowing), all that shit. gets kidnapped a ton of times, as usual.
helen is like “i am going to kill you because i hate gertrude <3 i was that dumb bitch’s assistant for too long” but michael busts out of the door like Hi Guys and traps her in the hallway.
sasha also gives her statement about a leitner she found as a child that marked her. its a stranger book and we learn her edgy orphan origin story how her parents were both murked by the stranger. fucked up if true!
back at the archives jon is like so fucking tired of this shit honestly and now martin is also pretty paranoid. also jm romance subplot is still very present!
tim is just trying to protect sasha at all times and he’s pissed she keeps leaving the country and getting fucking kidnapped
(remember when jon persuades the traffic cop?) sasha starts to fill her archivist role in a different way. she can shapeshift into the subject of a statement and uses her affiliation with the eye to coerce statements or info out of people. (example: if she needed a live statement from the guy in #90 Body Builder, she could temporarily make herself look like jared hopworth to the guy and ask “what happened to me?” or “what did i do?” and the guy would be like well he built some fucken bodies i guess let me tell you all about it) while reading the statements in america that refuel her, she fully shapeshifts into the statement giver while reading out loud.
once again i truly can’t remember daisy + basira’s roles until the end of the season. also melanie get shot by the ghost at some point
anyways sasha gets kidnapped by trevor and julia and they gerry lays out all the shit for her and she’s like ah! i’m fucked
tim offhand mentions the web ritual to martin and he loses his shit cause he’s marked by the web blah blah this isn’t a web!martin thing i swear i just need someone to fill tim’s role in the ritual and a lonely ritual would be fucking boring as hell as we learned from ass man peter lukas. i hate that man
so they make the plan to stop the web ritual (which is fucking hard when the offense knows your every move) so sasha, basira, daisy, jon, and martin go.
tim stays back at the institute to burn shit and distract elias. elias does some fucked up shit as usual and it makes me sad
the ritual starts! they have a plan to blow it up and run but like. u know how it goes
instead of the unknowing-stranger-dream-sequence, we get everyone kinda mixed up in a huge spider’s web on the big stage and its still quite confusing because this ritual not only manipulates the prey, but also the prey’s perceived reality. the web is also in current control of the buried coffin cause they think that shit is kinda fun. they yeet daisy into it.
hard to describe what happens, but basira keeps her cool, jon is a bit lost in his own mind, sasha tries to use her powers to escape but fails. she manages to get through to martin through the strings and mounds of spiders and she tosses him the detonator.
[squishing spider noises]
SEASON FOUR:
martin doesn't die, i told you i can't kill the og archival assistants! he does lose most of one leg though, he took the blunt of the explosion.
sasha in da hospital in da coma. tim is mad he can’t wake her up and then my man ollie says “ur fucked up mate” and she wakes up
(and because coma jon has such wild hair controversy, i’m establishing that her head was shaved when she was in the coma. it grows back thru s4. it she keeps one side shaved cause she’s cool)
meanwhile tim is recruited by that dumbass man you know who i don’t even wanna say his stupid fucking name
sasha gets daisy out of the buried. they become avatar pals!
(there is the biggest blank in my memory where all of season four should be. at this point i should just relisten to the entire fucking show but i would literally just forget it all again)
melanie says hm. fuck this! and blinds herself. she goes to live with georgie (and that’s the moment jon and sasha realize they are both georgie’s exes FHFHDJD)
tim continues to fight the lonely pull. he thinks that since p*ter l*kas is tied to the institute, he can blind himself out cause melanie was successful. he is wrong. he is also interrupted by elias midway, and only blinds one eye, and loses most of his sight in the other. elias’s hold on him is weak, but this just drives him way farther into the lonely.
gotta be honest i remember the end of season four but like i couldn’t visualize what was happening at the end so i like don’t understand what happened JGDKFJGD but sasha intervenes (???) and peter yeets tim into the lonely (???) and sasha jumps in (??????) after him. elias is just there i guess?
instead of “look at me martin,” sasha finds tim and at this point her form is warped and hard to recognize because of stranger powers, and tim is almost 100% blind, so she says “don’t look at me, see me. see me tim, it’s me.” and finally creates a clear image of herself. “it’s...it’s you. you’re my sasha.”
they break free and go to scotland i guess KHSDDKDSF
idk what happens with jon and martin im losing continuity at this point. fuck it, they smooch <3
“ah these are the statements.”
“yes. basira said last week she’d send some up as soon as the archives weren’t a crime scene. and she wasn’t sure which ones you’ve read already, so she, she just said she’d send a bunch.”
“.........Hello Sasha.”
(alternate ending: personally i think sasha would read through each statement before speaking them aloud cause that’s what i would fucking do, so she would get this statement and be like “lmao tim come look at this elias trying to prank me dumb bitch think i’ll start the apocalypse for him. fucking little puny bitch boy. anyways what do you want for dinner?”)
SEASON FIVE:
“just. listen.”
“...i’m dead. and you have been chosen to be my replacement as head archivist. hopefully, this means you, jon, but if someone else is hearing this, and elias has made a different choice for some reason, then these words are still very much intended for you.”
sasha in full stranger avatar mode and is like 8ft tall and her faces shift a lot as they go through the realms. except the stranger is the second to last one (the panopticon is last obviously).
helen and michael actually talk shit out in the spiral hallway and now they are mlm wlw solidarity and both like tim and sasha are such bi and trans icons <3 this is so fun don’t you love the fearpocalypse <3
oh daisy n basira trapped in the hunt, and jon and martin are trapped in the stranger. wtgfs + the admiral are like in space or some shit idk but they are ok :)
not much to report other than she is my monster wife <3
i really don’t have many theories to how everything in s5 is gonna pan out, and i would like to closely mirror the actual show, so maybe as we get closer to the end i’ll build more on to this! thanks a lot for all the notes on my first sarchivist post!! also if u wanna make art this specific au DEF tag me in it i’d love to see!!

hello stinky i would like to know who is your favourite mechanism and why, i expect a 2k word essay on my desk by friday
ah fuck ah shit they’re all so excellent i will instead list my favorite things about all of them in order of my vague memory of when they joined the crew. also i smell good how dare you. also FYI for anyone not informed about the Lore, all the shit i’m gonna reference below is a hundred percent canonical.
-jonny: has an ego three thousand times larger than his short ass, king of hubris and not understanding anything. loves his sister dearly, but draws the line at random orgies, which i respect. drags corpses onto the ship like a cat bringing home a kill and tells carmilla to fix his new friends. eyeliner and belt game slay me. (four belts? FOUR??) sad and totally made up backstory, he just lied to everyone’s face about his daddy issues and they were like “chill, let’s write a song where you play all the parts and burn down a casino.” eats people sometimes, which is a positive trait in my heart.
-nastya: my god, finally a voice of reason- ah never mind. her vibes are impeccable, my mysterious trans lesbian queen is unique and absolutely vibing <3 “fuck the ship-!” “i do :3″ is my favorite line of dialogue in anything ever. machinefucker and very proud of it, to an almost concerning degree. that one picture where she’s resting two of her fingers on her chin and cocking her hip as she looks up at the sky makes me Yell.
-toy soldier: my beloved it/its inanimate enby ts!! i love it bc it just. vibes. it has so much fun singing and playing instruments and just fucking around with its friends. who would’ve thought the war criminal with a stolen voicebox would be the most babey of this group?? SPEAKING OF ITS VOICE HOLY SHIT. TRIAL BY SONG CAUSES HEART PALPITATIONS. adorable little nutcracker with the saddest fucking backstory infinity/10
-tim: so very very done with jonny but we all know they make out in “secret”. hit that fucking high note as loki so well, my god, he put his whole pussy into that! go gayboy relive that trauma! plays out of tune guitar like a champ and has a ten minute long song dedicated to him blowing shit up, what a power move. excellent hair and long sweeping coats, extremely gender of him.
-brian: ohhh sweet boy. but also totally commits atrocities? like he wouldn’t kill an octokitten that was eating marius alive but he’d let a million people die just so he didn’t have to hurt anyone, and that’s just on mje mode- his morals are so fucked, poor man. also hung upside down inside a sun for a century and respects the hell out of trans people and brings people back to life and those are just a few of my favorite things about him. he fully committed to the steampunk look when he got mechanized and i love that so much. also has the potential to be a tumblr sexyman.
-ashes: ASHES!! ashes ashes ashes. first off what a fucking good name that’s like a murderer naming themself Dead People. they’re the hottest, it’s just a fact, sorry everyone but they are just. mmm. carries around gold bars and cigars and gasoline and nothing else which i respect so much. (though where do they put that stuff? their hat??) sings excruciatingly beautifully and snarks at all the idiots they call their friends and practices the three r’s (rage, repression, and radicalness) so i cannot not love them.
-ivy: mystery wife! her whole thing is stories and yet she doesn’t know her own that’s so fucking pog of her. what does an archivist on a spaceship even do dawg it’s not like the other guys care about the cultures they’re annihilating, i’m pretty sure she just sits in her bunk and reads. why did she need her brain replaced? why does she have such crazy memory problems? how does her new brain calculate all these percentages? we don’t know! she’s very cute and wears fishnets and has a mohawk-ponytail which i adore. play me to sleep on ur flute please miss
-raphaella: twenty points right off the bat for having wings and wearing a knit crop top. what is she going for with her look, we don’t know, but she could do horrific experiments on me and i’d thank her, so it’s working, clearly. alternatively tortures and tops the shit out of marius, i will die on this hill. also a terrifyingly good singer, those little “the void siIings” in losing track make my breathing stop and the entirety of ties that bind is so fucking amazing i. hhhh
-marius: christ i love you mr neither a baron nor a doctor. the other guys are dumb but he’s the himbo of the group just for being That Way. also most of his characters’ (who are also himbos) lines are something along the lines of what the fuck or i don’t understand so i’m gonna punch you. he’s adorable and has such bastard vibes, even his outfit is ridiculous and cute. even though lyf was a cop he deserved to get a happy ending with them ok?? i just love him and his liddol raccoon face and he deserves a slow burn criminal/detective to crew mates to lovers.
OK JEEZ THATS A LOT. ARE YOU HAPPY ALEX. IM NOT GONNA DO AURORA OR CARMILLA BC CARMILLA LEFT AND AURORA NEVER TALKS TO ANYONE BUT NASTYA SO THERES NOT MUCH INFO ON HER PERSONALITY. WOO BOY.

For the 'give me a character' thing:
Basira, Caddy and Molly and/or Daisy (just in case nobody else sends them in for you ^^)
i love you, you’re a gem, i am kissing you very gently mwah <3
Basira:
How I feel about this character: love her, she’s amazing, she’s very very cool, i think she’s really well written and really compelling, i love her a whole lot :>
All the people I ship romantically with this character: DAISYYYYYY idk i know their relationship is fucked up but i like to imagine sometimes it’s not and they’re sweet together,,,, and i can always imagine a better timeline for them too,,,,, dasira my beloved,,,, otherwise i also like the sound of basira and melanie, thats quite good, they have a good dynamic and i like their vibe ^^
My non-romantic OTP for this character: again probably basira and melanie, i just really like how they interact and kind of immediately clicked, i like seeing them together
My unpopular opinion about this character: i don’t know if i have one? i imagine her shorter than daisy i guess (but thats cos i imagine daisy 6 foot 2 and built like she fights trains hjfdksla;) otherwise i don’t really think i have an unpopular opinion
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: hjgfdkls im only at season 3 still but uuuhhhh i think she and sasha would have been interesting to see interact. maybe not great friends but i would have liked to see their interactions play out, i think it would have been cool.
Caddy:

How Harry Styles Became A Modern Style Icon
by Phoebe Luckhurst - Evening Standard 15/11/19
A man wrought in the fires of teenage boyband hyper-stardom is not afraid of a little commotion. Still when Harry Styles — the One Direction matinée idol turned languid Gen Z icon — tweeted, at 1.01 pm GMT on Wednesday afternoon, that he would be taking his upcoming album Fine Line on tour, you could, if attuned to the correct demographic frequency, hear the howl echo around the internet: guttural, hungry, ululating. This was a pseudo-religious experience: one viral meme depicted the Pope holding a copy of his album aloft. The announcement has been retweeted almost 70,000 times.
The 25-year old is a tour veteran — he spent five years and five albums strapped to the thundering 1D juggernaut — but this new tour is his first as a bona fide solo brand. The album, his first in two years, is synth-soaked and soulful, the album’s aesthetic fever-dreamy. Granted, he’s not the first person to go to SoCal, try a few magic mushrooms and declare himself radically transformed, but the results are beguiling — and certainly a world away from his years as a Simon Cowell Ken doll. Since his last record, he has co- hosted t he Met Gala and been reborn as an Alessandro Michele muse. This is your Styles crib sheet.
Melody maker
Styles’s new album — written under a tie-dye mist after taking the aforementioned psychedelics, which also resulted in a mishap in which he bit off the tip of his tongue — is “all about having sex and feeling sad”, which, granted, as a topline, does not wildly differentiate the record from the genre of “al l other music ever”. Still, the early signs for Fine Line are encouraging. Its first single, Lights Up—which has been streamed almost 100 million times on Spotify —is synth-y, soulful, understatedly anthemic, very different to, and better than, the lead single on his last solo record, the Seventies, soft-rock Sign of the Times( it still, of course, hit No 1), and very, very different from anything he did with 1D. Many thousands of words have been written about whether there is a bisexual subtext to Lights Up. It has been noted that the song was released on National Coming Out Day, that Styles’s sexuality has been subject to frenzied speculation before, the video features an oiled-up, topless Styles gyrating around men and women, and that the lyrics (“Shine, I’m not ever going back/ Shine, step into the light”) could be interpreted as a meaningful revelation of sorts. Certainly, he has become a queer icon — especially with Gen Z — who are thrilled by his selection of genderqueer singer-songwriter King Princess as his support act for the European part of his tour. Speaking of collaborators, Styles worked on the album with producers Tyler Johnson, who has worked with Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Ed Sheeran, and Jeff Bhasker, who has collaborated wit h Mark Ronson and Kanye West, and his friend, Tom Hull, aka Kid Harpoon, who co-wrote Shake It Out for Florence + The Machine. He has also been granted a fairy godmother: Stevie Nicks, who called him her “little muse” at Fleetwood Mac’s hyped Wembley headline gig i n J une. “S he’s a l ways there for you,” Styles has said in the past. “She knows what you need: advice, a little wisdom, a blouse, a shawl.” Sure.
Got Styles
Any young man raised in the white heat of a boyband spotlight must be granted the space to find his fashion path; Styles has done so with no missteps and exuberant pleasure. Once upon a time, he would semaphore his individuality with a bandana; now, he turns up to a cover interview with Rolling Stone in a white floppy hat, blue denim bell-bottoms and Gucci shades, his nails coloured pink and green. His favourite trousers, until he lost them on the beach, were a pair of mustard corduroy flares; this week, he wore a Lanvin sweater vest with a sheep design that sent a coterie of London menswear stylists into throes of ecstasy. He wears floral suits and Cuban heels, ruffled, New Romantic shirts, Charles Jeffrey jumpsuits and pussy- bow blouses. It is flamboyant, self-consciously Bowie/Jagger, and in Gen Z parlance, “very extra”. His stylist Harry Lambert is partial to an extravagant collar, dramatic neckline and a voluminous trouser.
Besides Lambert, another part of this evolution has been his relationship with Gucci’s creative director Michele, who has turned the Italian heritage brand into the ultimate post-gender luxury fashion label, the first to merge their menswear and womenswear, and dispatch male models down the catwalk in dresses and women in suits. A good look for a Gen Z idol.
With the brand
Notably, the branding on this album and its tour artwork is consistent with this new look Styles. The album cover features Styles i n white custom- made Gucci bell bottoms and a Pepto Bismol-pink shirt, open almost to the waist, shot by mod-goth Tim Walker with a fisheye lens (it is Walker’s hand in that S&M glove you can see in the left-hand corner). In the dreamy video for Lights Up he wears a glittery suit and suspenders, in a sort of hallucinatory version of Saturday Night Fever. Into it.
Stand up
Then there’s his voice — not the music, but the activism. Even as one-fifth of a boyband manufactured by Cowell’s algorithm, he was quick, quippy and itching to go off-message; but now that he controls his own, he is amplifying causes such as Black Lives Matter and End Gun Violence. He wore stickers for both on his guitar on his last tour, which might sound small, except that photographs of Styles gallop around the digital world at hyperspeed. At concerts, he has waved pride, bi and trans flags, and a Black Lives Matter flag. He once borrowed a flag from an audience member at a show in Philadelphia that read, “Make America Gay Again”. At a show on his last tour, he declared: “If you are black, if you are white, if you are gay, if you are straight, if you are transgender — whoever you are, whoever you want to be, I support you.”
A vocal, engaged fandom of teenage girls minted his multimillion-pound fortune; he is loyal and admiring of their zeal. “They’re the most honest — especially if you’re talking about teenage girls, but older as well,” he told Rolling Stone this summer. “They have that bullshit detector. We’re so past that dumb outdated narrative of ‘Oh, these people are girls, so they don’t know what they’re talking about.’ They’re the ones who know what they’re talking about. They’re the people who listen obsessively. They f***ing own this shit. They’re running it.” Obviously, he’s a feminist. “Of course men and women should be equal. I don’t want credit for being a feminist. I think the ideals of feminism are pretty straightforward.” An icon is born.

iiiiii read the tags on your one post PLEASE tell me your explanations for our boy jack and elysian fields on jonny's playlist (and any others you wanna elaborate on!)
HELL YEAH. Ok so I made/finished Jonny’s playlist first, and yet the rules that I set for which Mechs songs I could include made it very difficult because One Eyed Jacks isn’t on Spotify, and that’s both his backstory track and what plays under his death. So he’s the reason the “iconic songs” rule exists. I decided there needed to be one from OUATIS since that album is just Jonny, TS, and Tim sometimes, so I went with Our Boy Jack cause I think it fits Jonny’s energy best, just, murder! Fuck authority! And then Elysian Fields was initially the first solo he has in UDAD that I thought of, but then when I thought about that in relation to Jonny and his death I got very sad. Just, the complete and total acceptance Ulysses has of their death, and the fact that they’re actually happy to be dying because they can finally be free of their memories and be free of The Acheron and a hellish eternity, and if that’s not Jonny “excited to die” D’Ville then idk what is.
Ok I went on a rant about Raph’s playlist already so I’ll find that and screenshot it or whatever but I’ll just do other random ones now.
I’m very attached to trans Jonny and trans Marius but they’re both different sides of the trans guy spectrum so that’s why Mama is on Jonny’s playlist and Home is on Marius’.
Cecily Smith is on Brian’s playlist for the specific “welcome to the band, I hope you like music!” thing that he has going on, and because of the end going along with Brian outliving most of the crew.
Prom Queen on Ivy’s playlist goes along with a specific hc/Tik Tok chain about the scars left behind from being mechanized
Our Last Summer is on TS’s playlist and by all rights, it’s an ABBA song, it shouldn’t make me sad, but it does. TS misses its friends...
Carry On is on TS’s playlist cause it fits but mostly b/c of the line “I was lost and now I don’t roam these streets/I am not the ghost you wanted of me” because of both the meuseum and Salvation Army part of its backstory and because of its collection after the Rose Red war being while a dude was robbing corpses
The person I @ on the original post said “soft sad love songs are mariuscore” and that just made the entire playlist. Also thank you to the person who reblogged the post with the tags “You Told The Drunls I Knew Karate is such a fucking gay found family stupid decisions best friends kinda song. That made no sense but. y know?” because yes, I do know, and you get it.
Achilles Come Down and Icarus are both references to my funky Greek mythology obsession, for Tim it’s the fact that someone brought up that Tim and Bertie were super similar to Achilles and Patroclus which is TRUE and SAD. And Icarus is my own take which is “yeah Brian is an Icarus figure, he plays Daedalus and also oh man does that guy have some hubris before he gets killed”
Little Lion Man on Jonny’s playlist is specifically a reference to Nastya leaving, and a wild amount of Nastya’s playlist is based on that as well if you couldn’t tell.
And Maps on Jonny’s playlist is a reference to that one time Maki said Jonny was a good boy pre mechanization cause holy shit have I never stopped thinking about that.
Also there’s three Gunpowder Empire songs on these playlists and I actually know fuck all about the band other than those three songs, I stumbled upon one of their songs while trying to finish Tim’s playlist, looked at the lyrics of some of their songs and went “alright fuck it” and put them on there
Ok ty for letting me rant, I’ll find the Raph rant and reblog this with it perhaps

The Mechanisms
Or, an attempted quasi-masterpost/crash course of content for the gay mythical dieselpunk space pirate band we all deserve in our lives.
The Story
A spacefaring vampire mad scientist and aspiring musican known as Dr. Carmilla once created a group of quasi-mechanical immortals to serve as her backing band. The doc has since has an “accident” with an airlock, but her creations, the Mechanisms, are still driven to perform. So, in their living starship Aurora, they travel the universe, looking for fun if possible, violence when necessary, and hopefully both at once; and performing the stories of what they’ve seen over their long lives.
These stories don’t tend to end happily.
OR, the Mechanisms were a musical cabaret act who performed scifi-genre-mashups which combined spoken-word storytelling and music in queer retellings of myths and fairy tales, in character as a band of morally questionable space pirates. And it’s great.
Crew members included:
Jonny D’Ville, captain first mate and storyteller, former murderous gunslinger with a cold mechanical heart
Ashes O’Reilly, quartermaster and firestarter from the mobster planet Mallone with a pair of mechanical lungs
Drumbot Brian, pilot, launched into space by an uncomprehending world, entirely mechanical except his heart (which now comes with “ends justify means” and “means justify ends” settings)
Gunpowder Tim, master-at-arms, who destroyed the Earth’s moon in the war against the Moon Kaiser three hundred years in the future ago and was given new eyes by the crew
Nastya Rasputina, engineer and last surviving princess (after the Revolution) of the Cyberian empire, dating the ship
Ivy Alexandria, archivist and navigator, with a mechanical brain that remembers everything except her own former life,
Baron Marius von Raum, doctor, not a baron, not a doctor
Raphaella la Cognizi, science officer, has wings, plays piano
The Toy Soldier. Exactly what it says on the tin.
The octokittens.
There may have also been a ninja at some point? I’m honestly not sure?
In late 2019, the Mechs announced that the band would be calling it quits, and they played their final two shows in January of 2020, resulting in the bittersweet and ignoble deaths of the once-immortal crew of the starship Aurora.
Music: aka, Where Can I Listen?
There are 4 main Mechanisms albums, 2 Tales To Be Told collections, and one single. You can buy the whole discography for £5+ pay-what-you-want on their Bandcamp here, which I thoroughly recommend. You can also listen to them on Spotify and on their official Youtube channel!
Tales to be Told and Tales to be Told Vol. II include the backstory songs of many of the crewmembers, as well as some of their other standalone adventures and tales, and a couple of songs tied to the other albums.
Once Upon a Time in Outer Space is Grimmsian fairy tales and nursery rhymes reinterpreted as a sci-fi tragedy about the rebellion against cruel tyrant Old King Cole, lead by Cole’s former general Snow White. Snow’s sister, the warrior Rose, was kidnapped by Cole to be cloned into his unstoppable army, and both Snow and Rose’s bride-to-be Cinders are desperate to free her and overthrow Cole. And then the Mechanisms show up... I often use Our Boy Jack as a song to introduce people to the band.
Ulysses Dies at Dawn is a cyberpunk noir retelling of the Odyssey and assorted Greek myth. In a city that covers a world, where the minds of the dead are imprisoned by the ruling Olympians to run the vast Acheron computer network, bitter war veteran Ulysses is the only one who may have found a way to escape. So, a quartet of menacing Suits have been sent to get the secret out of them -- and out of their strange underground vault -- by any means necessary.
High Noon Over Camelot, an Arthurian space western featuring trans Mordred, polyamorous and morally questionable gunslingers Arthur/Lancelot/Guinevere, Drumbot Brian as a decaying metal Merlin, slightly mad preacher-man Galahad, many good intentions, and few good results; all trapped within an abandoned space station in failing orbit around a star, all hoping to find the mysterious GRAIL in time.
The Bifrost Incident is their cosmic-horror locked-room-mystery take on Norse myth. After leaving for its three-day maiden voyage with all the high and mighty of Asgard onboard and then vanishing for 80 years, Old Lady Odin’s Ratatosk Express has finally arrived, and it’s up to Inspector Lyfrassir Edda to pick apart the black box recordings and discover what really happened. (Notably includes space revolutionary wives Loki and Sigyn, as well as a track where Jonny makes an invocation to Yog-Sothoth sound good somehow.)
and Frankenstein, a single telling the story of Victoria Frankenstein and the AI she built, and how it goes wrong.
In addition, the livestream of their final concert, Death to the Mechanisms, is viewable on their YouTube channel. Said concert also features the amazing Reesha Dyer, whose music can be found here. (As of Feb. 6, 2020, the available version of the livestream cuts out much of the second half of the show; apparently there are alternate versions coming soon.)
More Content Please?
The band’s official site contains profiles of crew members, lyrics for many of their songs, original fiction set in the Mechanisms universe, and other assorted goodies.
If you never had the chance to see them live, the TV Tropes page actually explains a lot of their live show content, as well as more about the crew and the stories.
And if that’s not enough, here’s a YT playlist of many live videos of their shows, including full performances! There’s a lot that doesn’t go on the albums (although I recommend listening to the proper recordings first). Well worth watching to see their antics in-character. (There is not, as far as I know, any full video of High Noon Over Camelot; there is a video of The Bifrost Incident, but as of writing this I don’t have a good link to it.)
& of course there’s the band’s official Twitter and Tumblr, the latter of which in particular contains many delicious and exclusive tidbits.
Related Media & Other Projects By The Crew
Having apparently survived her airlock accident, Dr. Carmilla also has her own music (and describes her musical style as “Retrospective Futuristic Visual Kei”).
The Toy Soldier (Jessica Law) has her own Bandcamp and a mailing list here!
Raphaella (R. L. Hughes) has her own Bandcamp.
Drumbot Brian releases music as Ben Below and Phonovoltaic.
Gunpowder Tim and Brian make music with the company Softwire.
Marius has his own Bandcamp.
Raphaella and the Drumbot have released some music about sad robots under the name Overclockwork.
Jonny D’Ville (Jonny Sims) co-runs a TTRPG company, MacGuffin & Co, whose settings and scenarios I can personally highly recommend. He also writes some kind of podcast.

Night Castle
Tumblr media
Hi all! I will be posting mini-reviews of my favorite parts from each TSO album! I will go over band personnel, the story, and the music! Please enjoy!
Night Castle was released in 2009, and was TSO’s second non-Christmas album! It is also their longest, with 26 total songs, and, to me at least, their most emotional album to date.
The album features many familiar faces, with lead singers being Jay Pierce, Jeff Scott Soto, Tim Hockenberry, Rob Evan, and Jennifer Cella. The band personnel is also very familiar, with Paul O’Neill, Chris Caffery, Angus Clark, Al Pitrelli, and Alex Skolnick on guitar, Robert Kinkell, Jon Oliva, Luci Butler, Shih-Yi Chang, Jane Mangini, and Derek Wieland on keyboards, Chris Altenhoff and Johnny Lee Middleton on bass, Roddy Chong and Anna Phoebe on violin and strings, and John O.Reilly and Jeff Plate on drums. And, with Dave Wittman on, as all TSO albums say, “drum, guitar, and bass inserts for those little things the rest of us forgot.”
It also features Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's Greg Lake on bass for Nutrocker!
And, not to mention the numerous amazing backing vocalists and instrumentalists!
Its a big album with big personnel, a big story, and even bigger music. Lets get into that~
---------
Night Enchanted
-Best hard opening to a TSO album
-HEEERE belieeeve a nigHT ENCHANTED S̸̟͋̉̔͛̀͋̃̑̑̈́̏̅̈́È̵̡̜̼̞͔̖̩̦̟̞̣͈̑̄̽̒͝E̸̛͖̯͙̜͕̟̽̈́̃̉̿̏̈͛̌͆̔̂́ͅE̵͙̙̞̯͚̹̲̟̙͐̀͑̍͊̚͜Ẹ̷̡͇̹͍̓̈́̏͑̄̅̀̎̈́̓̚E̶̛̱̖̘͓̹͍̟̭̲̲̽͋͒̀̓E̵͓̰̠̤̻̪̣̎͊̎͒N̴̢̧̜̰̦̰͓̯̗̦͚̘̝̑̔̌͂͐̀͊
-Very different song, like,,VERY DRAMATIC. ExtrEMLEY DRAMATIC
-Based on Verdi’s Requiem and Dies irae
-Has the Child Of the Night aria sandwiched in the middle
-So the falcon character sings the aria
-I don’t know how that works either
-then it KICKS IN AGAIN FULL POWER
-The pounding opening guitar motif that repeats is amazing
Childhood Dreams
-A very classical-based song, like, its very operatic
-The “controversial” song on the album. Only because people either love it or hate it. I love it. Its fun.
-CHILDhood CHILDhood CHILDhood
-Jay is singing from his SOUL here
-Lyrics are very whimsy:
“But then it's known to catch our eye And dare us all to once more try And with a childhood faith believe And that magic to retrieve As childhood dreams ...”
-Overall solid song
-The slow piano that kinda hangs back the entire time is great
-I love the way he sings the line “But suddenly inside the dark, she sees the magic of the sparks...”
Sparks
-Old-school rock n roll song
-One of my favs off the album, its just so, idk..classic sounding?
-”Tell me when...Ḁ̷̯͖͉̽̎̔͋̀̽͗͐͂̊̌̇̕A̸̢̳̪͉͓̼̟͑Å̷̛̛̜̈́̆̀̆͂͋̊͐͗̔͑̇Ḩ̸͋̿̓̆͋͛͌͐͑͆̕̕Ḣ̷̨̙̺̦͚͓̠̀̿́͝H̴̗̮̎̽̀́̓̏̓̋̚H̶̼̘̩̱͖̻͎͒́Ḩ̶̢̧͓̲̼͇̼̱͓̱̞̖͕̀̽̾̒̚̕͠ͅ”
-It actually has “AHHH” in the CD booklet I kid you not
-Its a tad long ill admit but it rocks so hard you hardly notice
-The old school chugging guitar riff rocks
-”Leaving marks...SPARKS!”
-Just a classic song, nuff said
The Mountain
-eyyyy first Savatage cover- based n Prelude to Madness! From Hall of the Mountain King!
-The atmosphere is REAL
-The windy sound effect in the opening, the deep bells AH so good
-A familiar melody, and MAN they give it their best
-They speed up gradually over time, and it just gets to the point where its ridiculous how much is going on in the song
-These guys are so talented I swear
-The solo at 4:09 KICKS
Night Castle
-Jeff Scott Soto giving me life, once again
-Very different sounding song I believe, not many other TSO songs sound like it
“Am I risking my own life...my life..?
-OK also I SWEAR in the last 4th of this song, when the slow bit hits, the melody is EXTREMELY CLOSE to the opening to Mephistopheles, from Beethoven's Last Night. It may just be coincidence, but it sounds like an Easter egg to me. Or maybe I’m just crazy. AHA.
-The falling synth piano bits at 1:55. Yes.
-Song gets creepy with the minor change at the end
-I LOVE the last few seconds its so peppy and pretty, like that piano is so gentle
The Safest Way Into Tomorrow
-And I’m crying already, thanks Paul.
-They used this song for the tribute to Paul O’Neill in the 2017 live show. And i get so sad every time I hear it now. Like a melancholy feel now.
“Morpheus is at your side, offering the wings to fly, and be there..”
-Thanks Morpheus
-This line hits me right in the feels every time:
“Be there, free from Earth to sail across this night, where stars are all eternal”
-The piano build at 3:15 mmmm
-BEEEE THEEEEEERE
-BEEEEEE THEEEEEEERE
-BEEEEEEE THEEEEEEEEEERE
-BEEEEEEEE THEEEEEEEEEEEERE NOOOOOWWW
-”And tell me what you...see!”
-I cry
-Also may I note how I LOVE that every character that TSO makes looks like an 80′s rocker. Like look at my dude Morpheus. And Tran-Do. Never stop TSO, never stop.
Tumblr media
(Morpheus^)
Mozart and Memories
-Second Savatage cover!
-Very eerie
-Fits with the “dream” thing going on in the story at this point
-The guitars are the best part at 0:42, that melody is so eerie and cool
-The pianos and strings at 0:24 hit me hard, VERY well recorded there
-It gets real fast at the end
-TSO and classical covers are such a good combo
Another Way You Can Die
-TSO got PG.
-Like look:
“And the tracers probe on 'Till a close friend is gone And you find yourself embracing ground”
-and:
“I see a figure in my rifle sight Who does not know that he's there And as I hesitate to take his life The ground explodes My blood it flows My heart is racing Times escaping As I feel it slowly scraping by”
-like holy hell
-Like I love the song don’t get me wrong
-But lord Paul went all out here
-He was NOT holding back
-PAULS GOT A MESSAGE TO GET ACROSS AND LORDY HES GONNA DO IT ANY WAY HE CAN
-That end piano drop mY HEART HURTS
Toccata - Carpimus Noctem
-TSO has mastered Christmas, TIME FOR HALLOWEEN MUAHAHA
-Literally its such a good cover. They keep the classic classical intro, with synth and guitars of course, but then they go full metal with it.
-I love the weird guitar lick at 1:49, it really stands out
-Yet another guitar solo featured song and mmm its good
-Also, the DRUMS ARE AMAZING IN THIS ONE
The Lion’s Roar
-Third Savatage cover kind of
-The second half is from Temptation Revelation from Gutter Ballet
-As a trumpeter, I love this song, as it is TSOs only trumpet-featured song.
-The first half is a very military-esque (Fits with the story, eh?) trumpet solo on The Minstrel Boy. This song is very accurate as it is usually played at military events or funerals.
-Which makes me even sadder because of the context of thE STORY
-Nice little interlude song
Tumblr media
Dreams We Conceive
-EMOTIONS.
-The opening organ, it its me right in the HEART.
-You can just HEAR the sorrow in his voice in this song.
-The way he sings “Where the dreams die...as the blood dries...”
-Too relatable my soul can’t take it.
-His little voice quiver on the word “do” in the line ‘WHat else is the night to do..”
“As you stand all Alone at your station What if God doesn't Know where you are As you send out your Prayers for salvation But afraid that They don't go that far
So you wait all Alone in your darkness There's a train that drives on Through the night And if everyone's On it except us Would it return for That single life
In a city After midnight Neath the halo Of a street light”
-Its just so LONELY SOUNDING this man needs a hug
Mother and Son
-I used to skip this track before I understood it in context to the story.
-Then I felt emotions
-You can find the translation HERE.
-Imagine you past self looking at you and saying “How did I become you?” TO YOUR FACE
-savage

There Was A Life
-ENTER ROB EVAN
-This song man,,,the emotions are REAL
-The way he sings the word “life” in the opening line
“Can someone tell me Can someone say when The writer of this story Will just tell us how it all will end?”
-I relate too much to that
-Paul asking the real questions of life: “ Is there forgiveness for hesitation?”
-The HURT in his voice when he sings “DEAR GOD” at 3:14
-Robbbb why you gotta kill me like this
-The piano is superb at 4:22
-Captures the vibe perfectly
“Are you scared of your life? Are you scared of your death? Though that day will arrive Well it hasn't come yet...”
-Calling me out like that huh
-His “ALIIIIIIIIIVE” at 8:37 oh my LORD
-I’m feeling ALL the emotions
Moonlight and Madness
-OK. So I can’t think of which piano player it was, I’m thinking either Kinkel or Weiland, I could be wrong...BUT. Paul said in an interview once that the songs piano was recorded in one take. ONE TAKE THAT INTRO. He just FLEW INTO IT PERFECTLY.
-Its a wild song, based on the moonlight sonata.
Time Floats On
-This song man..this song
-*Insert seagull meme here* “tiiiiime flllOAATS OOOOON!!!”
-It was one of the first TSO songs I ever heard
-The crazy contrasting piano bit in the middle AH its cool
-Such an eerie song really
-”Time floats on...as I write these letters that you'll never see...”   ;-;
-this song has so much heart
Epiphany
-OK HERE WE GO
-TSOs longest song
-TSOs most emotional song
-I’m crying again
-The SHEER HURT and SORROW in Rob’s voice when he sings “ I fear the night, I fear the dark, I need this light...that distant spark...”
-The fast bit at 3:52...I don’t think Rob breathed once during that recording.
-The spoken part was a bold choice, TSO has never done that before. I liked it a lot, its a great addition to the song.
-The subtle harmonies in the “Somewhere”s...amazing.
-and MAN. The LYRICS.
“Did you ever walk up To the edge of a cliff Stare into the abyss As your mind wonders if You should take one more step Further into that night Well your mind says you won't But your heart says you might Would you fall through the dark Feel the wind in your hair Would you embrace the ground And end your life right there Or would god reach his hand And that moment you fly Or if he chanced to blink And then, that moment you die You die...”
-Like GEEZ that is heavy stuff
-This is the “contemplating death song”
“Be who you are What you were What they see From eternity's view Tell me which one is me?”
-Relatable. holy heck.
-He sounds like hes about to cry when he sings “Hold me close...”
-Like me too Rob. Me too.
-”This all is your....life..."
-You feel DRAINED by the end of it, like wow. The emotion, the power, my soUL. MY HEART.
Bach Lullaby
-A nice calming music box medley of the C major prelude.
-OK SO TSO SHOULD ACTUALLY MAKE LITTLE MUSIC BOXES THAT PLAY THIS HOLY HECK ID BUY 50
Tumblr media
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
-The OTHER most EMOTIONAL SONG on the album
-First half: pain, sorrow, regret, melancholy, slow piano...
-The EMOTION in the line “ Never quite there but it's never quite gone, you are the star that is wished upon...forever....”
-Second half: RAGE. ANGER. FIRE. AAAHHHHH.
-The main guitar riff is so heckin powerful
-Lyrics literally have this background in it: “...she raged against all those citizens of apathy and willful ignorance who lived behind the sacrifices of others.”
-The high piano swapped out for low guitar and bass melodies, a heavy mood, and pounding drums
-”...You cling to that card, Father, Son & Holy Ghost”
Tumblr media
-You FEEL THE RAGE
-It has the most metal lyrics:
“And Christ and Confucius Are all their words useless We quote them in fractions But not in our actions”
-Like WOW
Remnants of a Lullaby
-A simple, but pretty song
-Very calming, and a nice breather from the song before
-The feeling in “ What to keep, what to save...”
”Wished on coins Childhood wings Carousels Still turning Waiting there patiently Remnants of a lullaby...”
-IM A KID AGAIN
The Safest Way Into Tomorrow (Reprise)
-dangittt I’m crying AGAIN
-album comes full circle here in the most emotional way possible
-especially when you consider the context of the story at this point aahhHHH
-Soto owns my soul
Embers
-OK, just..I love this song. Simple as that.
-This is pure atmosphere.
-Listen to it. Bonfire. Embers soaring to the stars above. Fireflies all around. Friends sitting with you at the camp fire. Acoustic guitar playing. A perfect summers night.
-Just...perfection.
Child of the Night
-Eyyyyy the aria again. It grows on yah.
-Very relaxing.
-Just brings that calming night vibe to life.
-Makes yah feel like a kid again.
Believe
-AAAAND the TSO song everyone knows for one reason or another.
-Also one of the more emotional ones on the album.
-A cover of the Savatage song off Streets
-I love this version, (No offense Jon), like idk why exactly...it just feels more..personal? Idk, maybe its just because of the sheer emotional journey we just went on lol.
-It builds spectacularly, and the emotion is all in in this one. 10/10 great cover.
Nutrocker
-YAYY JUST HAD AN EMOTIONAL AND HEARTBREAKING JOURNEY, TIME FOR HAPPY FUN CHRISTMAS EMMERSON LAKE AND PALMER NUTCRACKER SONG YAYY
-Heh I kid I kid
-It features Greg Lake on bass!
-This song ROCKS man it ROCKS
-TSO does SO WELL WITH THIS
-The fast piano, the amazingly melodic guitar melody, the rock bits with a jazz break sandwiched in between AH.
Tumblr media
Carmina Burana
-This is also one of my favs off the album.
-I believe this is also the song that got some conservative folks mad at TSO for being “satanists” by playing this. It was the latin I think.
-Doesn’t matter, this song is epic. Very bombastic.
-It builds so well, and the repeated guitar and bass riffs make it feel so pounding I love it.
Tracers
-Ok so this song and I have history.
-I originally didn’t like this song (woah, right?)
-It just didn’t click. Buuuuut, TSO did it live in 2018, and BOI that changed everything. I loved it after that. Its top 25 TSO songs for me now.
-IDK what they did or how they did it, but after the live show, I loved it. Past me was wrong. This song ROCKS.
-The pounding opening is iconic
-The soaring guitars
-The weird interval medley at 0:49 is so cool
-The main melody KICKS at 1:00
-My fav bit is the surreal acoustic bit at 2:06
-Its SO GOOD
-The repeated 5 notes at like 1:34 are so driving
-The descending bit at 2:55!!!
-and the BUILD UP TO THE VOCAL PART AT 3:32 OH MAN POETIC CINEMA
-------
And there you have it!!! Night Castle! To me, its the most emotional album of the lot. And the most atmospheric. Its long, but its a wild ride the entire time. The story is sad but inspiring, the music is legendary, the art is beautiful, so all around, this, to me, may be their best album in terms of general scoring. What do you think?
Thanks for reading ya’ll! You rock!

Beautiful Boy I’ve never been a parent or a junkie (yet!), but I found a lot that resonated in Beautiful Boy, a low-key film based on a pair of interconnected memoirs from father and son David and Nicolas Sheff. David (Steve Carell) chews himself up over son Nic’s (Timothée Chalamet) spiral into meth and heroin addiction, asking what he could have done to prevent it and wondering how he can fix it. Nic, meanwhile, copes with not only his body’s betrayal but with the disappointment he feels, both self-directed and from his patient, confused father. From Beautiful Boy’s perspective, Nic is really only guilty of having a curious mind, while David, a good father in every recognizable way, might have simply waited too long to show his beloved son some tough love. The performances make the whole thing sing. Carell and Chalamet both do expectedly good work, and they’re matched by Amy Ryan as Nic’s mother and Maura Tierney as his stepmother. Beautiful Boy is driven by the real-life horror of watching a loved one succumb to drugs, but it’s a family drama devoid of most of the genre’s manipulative qualities, substituting them with honesty, empathy, and fully drawn human beings. NED LANNAMANN Meridian 16 (Regal) & Oak Tree
Beetlejuice Newly dead Adam and Barbara Maitland aren’t down with the Deets family, who moved into the couple’s home after their unfortunate passing and don’t seem at all phased by the Maitlands’ attempts at scaring them out of it. Enter rotten, pervy Betelgeuse (“Beetlejuice”), who sells himself as a bio-exorcist capable of getting rid of their living pests, though he turns out to be a dangerous nuisance who’s more trouble than he’s worth. Tim Burton’s first film (and my first Tim Burton film, too) is on-point with vibrantly weird visuals, quick-witted comedy, and strong before-they-were-big-stars performances from (goddamn he looks young) Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis (extra dimply, woman-next-door funny), a teenage gothed-out Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton at his comedic one-liner-throwing best—like, has he ever been this good? It’s bizarre yet delightful and still tons of fun three decades later. Even the dated special effects retain their charm. LEILANI POLK Central Cinema Friday–Sunday
Bohemian Rhapsody I heart Queen. The song this film is named for was on the soundtrack of my youth. But early reactions to the film biopic (that’s more about Freddie Mercury than the British rock band he led) have been mixed to bad. The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan tweeted that Bohemian Rhapsody “is a glorified Wikipedia entry but Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury (and wears his wonderful costumes) with incredible gusto.” Our own Chase Burns was not a fan at all. (“The 15-minute long shit I took during the middle of the movie was more nuanced than the straight-washed hagiography peddled in that movie theater.”) In sum, enter at your own risk. LEILANI POLK Various locations
Boy Erased This film features the most prolific twinks of our time: Troye Sivan, Lucas Hedges, and Nicole Kidman. These three gays will dazzle the screen in this year’s most star-studded gay flick—oh wait, Troye Sivan is the only gay among them. Lucas Hedges has said he’s “not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual,” and Nicole Kidman, despite being the world’s most famous twink, is surprisingly a 51-year-old Australian woman. While think pieces on Hedges’s sexuality will probably dominate the conversation around Boy Erased, it looks like a cute holiday movie about gay conversion therapy. Go see it! CHASE BURNS SIFF Cinema Uptown & Meridian 16
Can You Ever Forgive Me? In Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Melissa McCarthy stars as real-life best-selling biographer Lee Israel. But this isn’t a life of literary glitz and glamour that you’re imagining after such a juicy introductory sentence! After falling on hard biographer times, Israel turned to a life of writerly crimes, forging letters from long-dead authors to make just enough cash to pay her rent, take her cat to the vet, and aggressively drink. This all sounds sad, I know, but there’s warmth underneath, thanks to Israel’s friendship with the charming, equally self-destructive Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant). McCarthy, who’s made a career of portraying loud women, is a different kind of jerk here—a real person who lashes out not for laughs, but because life is hard and she knows she’s making bad choices. Cinema Italian Style The Cinema Italian Style is a weeklong SIFF mini-festival featuring the best in contemporary Italian cinema. This final day, watch Euphoria, about two very different brothers who come together in difficult circumstances. SIFF Cinema Uptown Thursday only
Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch If you’ve ever wondered how the jammy vocals of Benedict Cumberbatch would sound coming from a neon-green Seussian monstrosity, you have your chance in this visit to Whoville. This time, the Grinch has a doggy sidekick named Max. Angela Lansbury voices the Mayor and Rashida Jones does Donna Lou Who. Various locations
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Twee hunter Newt Scamander returns for more J.K. Rowling-inspired exploits. Of the previous Fantastic Beasts film, critic Bobby Roberts wrote: “It is eager to please and amaze, but undersells its spectacle until that spectacle becomes perfunctory. It milks sentiment drier than the Arizona desert Newt’s trying to get to. It’s a goofy blast of kid-lit in love with Looney Tunes-inspired adventure—except when it’s a sour metaphor for child abuse and intolerance that owes one hell of a debt to Stephen King’s famous prom queen.” The new one has Johnny Depp as the titular dark wizard. Various locations
First Man The space stuff is great. When La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s biopic about Neil Armstrong focuses on NASA’s insanely ambitious and dangerous plan to put a man on the moon, it thrums with thrill and threat—from the astonishing scope of space to the claustrophobic confines of the command module, the best parts of First Man are worth experiencing on the biggest screen possible. Ryan Gosling offers an excellent turn as Armstrong, but even Gosling can’t liven up the story’s more pedestrian elements, which largely involve Armstrong’s relationship with his wife (Claire Foy) and his stoic mourning of his daughter. First Man bears the familiar curse of the biopic—it somehow feels both overlong and unsatisfying—and never quite escapes the shadow of The Right Stuff, Philip Kaufman’s remarkable 1983 film that told a similar story with more grace and smarts. Still: the space stuff is great. ERIK HENRIKSEN Meridian 16 & AMC Pacific Place
Free Solo This highly praised, dizzying documentary reveals the heart-stopping journey of Alex Honnold as he conquered Yosemite’s El Capitan wall without ropes or safety gear. You don’t need to be a climber to be thrilled at this glimpse into human accomplishment. Various locations
Hep Cats Cats in movies have symbolized everything from elegance to curiosity to evil, but sometimes they are simply their wonderful selves. Hep Cats delivers a handful of these ailurophilic flicks, like Harry and Tonto, a charming road movie about a man and his cat forced to leave their Upper West Side apartment. It stars Art Carney, who won an Oscar for the role. JOULE ZELMAN Northwest Film Forum Saturday only

Meow Wolf The adorably named Santa Fe artist collective Meow Wolf caught the fancy of George R.R. Martin, who helped them take over a disused bowling alley for an epic art exhibition. But success comes with its own struggles. Enter their world and find delirious, DIY inspiration. Northwest Film Forum Thursday only
Mid90s Mid90s tells the story of 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic) who, after he’s rejected and bullied by his older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges), finds new role models in a crew of skaters led by the wise and magnanimous Ray (Na-kel Smith). Stevie’s willingness to repeatedly fall on hard concrete as he tries to maneuver a skateboard that looks half his height endears him to his newfound friends. The resultant feelings—and the film’s title—places Mid90s squarely in Hill’s nostalgic memory, where he both dramatizes and idealizes the kids’ adventures. SUZETTE SMITH Various locations
Monrovia, Illinois The amazingly prolific documentarian Frederick Wiseman (Ex Libris, In Jackson Heights, National Gallery, and 40 more films!) explores a tiny American hamlet steeped in old farming traditions and periodic ceremonies, like church services, Town Council meetings, Freemason rituals, weddings, and funerals. Northwest Film Forum Friday–Sunday
Mystery Train Exactly one year ago, I was walking down a street in Memphis, Tennessee, when I had what is known as a Proustian experience (or what literary critics call an “involuntary memory”). But in Proust’s novel Remembrance of Things Past, the involuntary memory sends the narrator, Marcel, to a town he visited as a boy (Combray). My memory, which was triggered by crossing a street, sent me to a film, Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train, which is set in Memphis and concerns young Japanese lovers who are obsessed with American popular culture. The couple walks around Memphis a lot. And while I walked around Memphis, I found myself walking, not through my Memphis, but theirs. This movie does not have much of a plot. CHARLES MUDEDE Grand Illusion Thursday only
Narcissister Organ Player The feminist body-shocker Narcissister, who carries out her performance art mostly naked and masked, muses on her Moroccan, Jewish, and African American roots and her intense relationship with her mother in this absurdist, experimental documentary. Northwest Film Forum
Night Heat They proliferated in anxious postwar America and still occasionally return to brood and smolder onscreen: films noirs, born of the chiaroscuro influence of immigrant German directors and the pressure of unique American fears. Once again, the museum will screen nine hard-boiled, moody crime classics like this week’s Night of the Hunter, one of the most unusual and thrilling films ever to come out of Hollywood. The veteran actor Charles Laughton took inspiration from the stylistic extremity of German Expressionism to film this hallucinatory tale of a psychotic preacher pursuing two young children who know he’s murdered their mother. Clear your Thursday night schedule for this one. Seattle Art Museum Thursday only
Night on Earth Five cabbies and five passengers around the globe share funny, weird, and intimate moments in Jim Jarmusch’s quirky classic—a little inconsequential, but charming and beautifully acted. Thanks to Roberto Benigni’s performance, you’ll never look at a pumpkin quite the same way again. Grand Illusion Thursday only
The Old Man and the Gun Based on a true story, the latest from David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) reteams the filmmaker with Robert Redford, who plays Forrest Tucker, the charming, handsome leader of a trio of geriatric bank robbers. Forrest’s partners in crime are Teddy (Danny Glover) and Waller (a fantastic Tom Waits). Like one of Forrest’s disarmingly polite robberies, The Old Man and the Gun starts out pleasant and sweet before revealing hints of darkness—each of these characters is deeper than they first appear, and one’s never quite sure what any of them are going to do next. Lowery is happy to tag along, capturing lives that are polished by time and dented by experience but remain bright and sharp with wit and passion. Watching Redford have this much fun is, as always, a goddamn delight. ERIK HENRIKSEN Admiral Theater
Overlord While carrying out a vital pre-D-Day mission, a ragtag bunch of American Dogfaces stumble across a small French village that’s just packed to the rafters with secret Gestapo experiments. (Note: In what may be a controversial move in this day and age, the Nazis are unequivocally depicted as the Bad Guys.) Genre mashups are often content to rest on their high-concept laurels, but this J.J. Abrams production is very willing to do the grunt work, solidly establishing its war movie bonafides—an early paratrooper sequence is genuinely alarming—before transitioning into full-tilt body horror. (This is an extremely moist movie.) If this sounds even remotely like your sort of thing, Overlord’s combination of heavy artillery and horrid creatures should prove to be pretty irresistible. When it comes to B-Movies, nasty, brutish, and short all count as positive traits. ANDREW WRIGHT Various locations
Ponyo You can pretty much guarantee that anything with Hayao Miyazaki’s name attached to it will be superbly wrought, fantastically animated, and delivered with a fine dose of poignant storytelling. He has left a fine legacy of films in his (no longer retired, for now) wake, including Ponyo, which has its 10-year anniversary this year and is being celebrated in a series of screening events across the country. This anime fantasy is loosely based on The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen’s version, not Disney’s), about an austere, potentially malevolent warlock/sea king whose young amphibious daughter runs (swims) away from her home. Sosuke, the little boy who scoops her from the waves, believes she’s a goldfish, names her Ponyo, and introduces her to a small slice of his world before her father finds her and brings her back to their underwater kingdom. But Ponyo’s taste of food and friendship fuels her next escape, setting off a chain of events that will change her (and Sosuke) forever. This film gets me choked up every time. LEILANI POLK SIFF Cinema Egyptian Saturday only
Prospect Is this the first major work of Northwest science fiction? Indeed, it imagines a moon that is like the evergreen forests that surround Seattle. The whole planet is green—gothic green. And the light on this strange moon is sharply slanted like Northwest light. The superb film is about prospectors (a father and daughter) looking for a root-made gem that will make them rich. The daughter, however, is keen to get off the planet because the line to it is about to be shut down. But her father is money-mad. If he does not make it here, he will never make it anywhere in the galaxy. Translucent insects float through the air. There are other money-mad prospectors in the endless forest. You do not leave this planet without paying a big price. Money is the root of all evil. CHARLES MUDEDE Meridian 16
Sadie The latest from local filmmaker Megan Griffiths (Lucky Them, Eden) has a perfect Northwest feel. Sadie is 13 and lives with her mother in a dilapidated trailer park. Sadie worships her absent father while being impossible with her harried mother. She is smart and precocious, trying to come to an understanding of how the world works, but the adults around her have their own problems. The film shows the way adults communicate with kids, never talking to them directly, trying to fool the kid and themselves. This leaves young people with half-ass ideas, and they run with them without really understanding the situation, with mixed results. The film has a great cast: The wonderful Melanie Lynskey plays the mom, with Sophia Mitri Schloss as Sadie. GILLIAN ANDERSON SIFF Cinema Uptown Sunday only
Seattle Turkish Film Festival The Turkish American Cultural Association of Washington will present the sixth annual edition of their community-driven, volunteer-led festival featuring a rich panorama of new Turkish films. For the final weekend, check out Something Useful, an intense drama about two women, one of whom has a grim mission, who meet on the train; The Legend of the Ugly King, about the Kurdish actor/director Yilmaz Güney; and Taksim Hold’em, about a man determined to play his weekly poker game despite the massive anti-government protests taking place outside. SIFF Film Center Friday–Saturday
SHRIEK!: Thirst The class focusing on women and minorities in horror is back with a screening and discussion of Park Chan-wook’s Thirst, about a saintly Catholic priest transformed into an insatiable blood-drinker and sex fiend by a risky medical experiment. Here’s an excerpt from the review Lindy West wrote at its release: “Thirst is a horror movie, albeit a silly one. Actual scares are few to none—instead, Sang-hyun’s painfully earnest consternation at trying to live as an ethical monster (losing his priestly virginity, daintily sipping a comatose man’s blood straight from the IV) make it a funny, cartoonish, and strangely sweet fable about ethics versus instincts: ‘Is it a sin for a fox to eat a chicken?’ Unfortunately, Thirst drags on for a punishing gazillion hours—ethical monster shacks up with manipulative harpy and the complications pile up like bodies (because, you know, they literally are bodies)—and you feel like you’ll never see your home or your mom or the precious golden sun again.” It might not be the most positive of reviews, but you’re guaranteed to get a good discussion out of it with organizers Evan J. Peterson and Heather Marie Bartels. Naked City Brewery Sunday only
Suspiria Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino’s reinterpretation of Argento’s film Suspiria is a precisely choreographed mindfuck, and progressing through the film’s six acts feels like peeling off layers of an onion until you reach the reeking core. It’s swift, brutal, and breathtaking, but it’s also frequently bogged down by overcomplicated subplots and distracting details. The original premise remains the same—ancient ballerina witches trying to live forever by sacrificing students—but this time around, the Markos Dance Academy is located right next to the Berlin Wall in post-World War II Germany, and Susie Bannion (a very meh Dakota Johnson) is a runaway Mennonite from Ohio. Whatever parallels Guadagnino hoped to draw between the traumatic aftermath of the Holocaust and the bloody chaos going on inside the coven ends up feeling more confusing than profound. CIARA DOLAN AMC Pacific Place & SIFF Cinema Uptown
A Star Is Born If you’re entering the theatre simply desiring a couple solid musical numbers, then your $15 will not have been spent in vain. Unfortunately, the movie falls flat as only a two-dimensional vignette of common misogyny can. Ally, the lead character played by Lady Gaga, is a woman who knows she has talent but needs to hear that she is sufficiently pretty to be an appropriate vehicle for said talent. Like any woman vying for a piece of the proverbial pie, she is just one man away from success. One man to lead her, to mold her, to push her through to the finish line. This man-shaped void is filled by her father, her husband, her manager, her producer, her choreographer, and her photographer, all of whom take credit or receive credit from other men for her creative output and appearance. A Star Is Born is a classic tale, meant to be mutable, fluid, to adapt within each age it is reimagined. But the flaws of the inherent narrative are too real, too every-day damaging to continue being told in the form of a cinematic fantasy. KIM SELLING Various locations
Voyeur Presents ‘The Prowler’ The November edition of VOYEUR brings “one of the bleakest noirs ever made,” Joseph Losey’s The Prowler, about a man who’s determined to get what he feels society owes him—an unhappily married woman played by Evelyn Keyes. Scarecrow Sunday only
Widows Arriving a week before Thanksgiving, Widows is an overflowing plateful of entertainment, piled high with juicy plot, buttery performances, and plenty of sweet genre pie. It’s a mash-up of pulp and prestige that shouldn’t work well on paper but plays out tremendously well on-screen. Director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Shame) cowrote the twisty script with novelist Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects), and while the interconnected webs of Chicago’s crime underworld and its racially charged local politics contain more than enough intrigue, the performances are what’ll grab you. I mean, just look at this cast: Harry (Liam Neeson) leads a crew of career criminals (including Jon Bernthal and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) in a heist that goes disastrously wrong, leaving their widows Veronica (Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez), and Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) with a serious problem when crime boss Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry) and his enforcer brother Jatemme (Daniel Kaluuya) demand they return the stolen money. The real fun is watching McQueen, Flynn, and this ridiculously large talent pool of actors lay the groundwork for a slick, rich, tantalizing thriller, and then connecting all the dots.
