Hello again kaisooists 🐧🐻 Little ole me has stumbled across something interesting 👀

Remember back on April 1st in 2016 when the news broke that ji and krys were dating and chahn yall posted this really odd and cryptic “headline” on his Instagram?

This randomly popped into my head the other day now that I’ve been missing kadi and thinking about them lately.

I remember at the time it was posted, everyone in the kaisoo tag was trying to decipher what he meant, if it was supposed to be an April fools joke or if it had anything to do with the dating news. If I remember correctly he’d posted it either right before or shortly after the news broke and was confirmed by Es Em.

So I decided to go over to chahn yall’s insta again to see what the comments on the post were bc it’s been so long and I was curious if anyone wrote any kaisoo related under it. But when I went to look for it, I noticed that it had either been archived or deleted.

I screen recorded for proof, the right side is hidden for privacy due to some ppl’s insta screen names being visible since I follow him. The dates of the post are magnified on the left side:

I can definitively say that it had been left up on his Instagram for months after kxk and I believe even up til they “broke up” but I’m not sure when or why it was removed.

Something that was also peculiar to me is that besides that screenshot from the tumblr above, it was INCREDIBLY difficult for me to find this post anywhere on the internet. Even chahn yall bias pages that repost his Instagram posts did not have this post anywhere to be found.

I searched for 20 minutes and was only able to find this screenshot here on tumblr and on a random Russian page:

There’s two things I want to mention here.

First I will explain the picture a bit more for those of you who may not know.

The mosaic picture in chahn y’all’s post is of KS in his role as Kang Woo for the drama “It’s Okay That’s Love”. In this drama, the main character Jae Yeol (played by Jo Insung) suffers from undiagnosed schizophrenia and befriends Kang Woo. But as his illness worsens it’s revealed that Kang Woo is not real and is a hallucination, representing Jae Yeol’s younger self. When Jae Yeol begins treatment, Kang Woo doesn’t appear to Jae Yeol anymore .

I don’t speak Korean but I think the correct translation of the headline title in the post would be “Actually, I’m hallucinating” indicating that he’s the one hallucinating and not Jae Yeol. Since his role in the drama was him as a hallucination it wouldn’t make sense to admit to being a hallucination.

At the time I initially thought “okay, maybe it’s some sort of lighthearted April fools joke and a playful jab and ks”. But as I thought about it, the joke didn’t really make much sense bc we already know after watching the drama that ks isn’t the one who was hallucinating.

Then after reading theories and thinking about it more, I thought it was weird to post that on the same day the kxk news came out. Which leads me to my second point: I do think it has something to do with kxk and here’s why.

As we all know egg sew had a concert that day, secret night. When the pictures came out ji looked like he’d been up crying all day and ks appeared to have tears in his eyes. They also were super awkward with each other and it seemed like ji looked apologetic about something and ks wouldn’t look at him. This was after a long period of not really interacting or showing skinship and of course all those pann and dispatch gay couple blind items disappearing.

So it made me think more about the insta post, how he said that actor D admits “actually, I’m hallucinating.” We all know that ks and chahn yall have a close friendship, and it seemed like the kxk scandal caught both ks and ji off guard, almost like they both found out this media play was happening on the same day, hours before the news went out. Was this post supposed to be a hint at ks’s feelings about the news breaking? Did kxk come as a surprise to him and make him feel like the entire relationship between him and ji was actually what wasn’t real to everyone else now, aka a hallucination?

It might be a reach, but I can’t think of any other reason behind why chahn yall would delete/archive that specific post but not any of the other ones. Unless you’re a kaisoo supporter the joke would seem to have no relation to the kxk scandal, so it’s really suspicious that it disappeared.

I also can’t say for sure, but I also wonder if SM has something to do with it being gone and almost no trace of it online or on fan archives. I noticed that after the kxk “break up” kaisoo went back to their own ways, but little by little different kadi blogs were deactivating and some fansites were disappearing abruptly. I’m talking hardcore kaisoo blogs and fansites that I would have never imagined would disappear (cuddlekaisoo, alvabear, kaiser-dolly, 8812 just for example, some of their posts are even hard to find here on tumblr). To this day I still am seeing things like “so-and-so-deactivated09122018” here on tumblr throughout the tag thinking to myself like “omg, this person was a super big kaisoo supporter and they deactivated? I would have never imagined..” 😶

Of course things happen, ppl move onto other things and maybe the second scandal with jinnie has something to do with it too, but it’s all just very odd to me. I’d love to know other ppl’s opinions about this too if you’re interested!🩷

The Fire Nation feels calmer than it's felt before, even in the few weeks it's been since her last visit. It's as if each time she arrives, it's to a new place, each time better than the one before. There is a sense of quiet tranquility to the air that was not there before. It is thanks to the new (though, not so new, considering the years that have passed since Zuko's ascension) Fire Lord and Aang that they've come as far as they have as a world. Under the last Fire Lord, there had been war, death, and destruction... But beneath the new... Peace, harmony, and rebirth. It has been a long time coming, like a phoenix rising from the ashes left behind, fragile but growing strong. Soon there would be a day where truly they lived in peace, without fear of rebellion.  

But today was not yet that day.  

She's come because of an incident that had happened in the Earth Kingdom; a band of Fire Nation rebels hiding out just across the border had gotten into a fight with villagers from a small village. It had resulted in no deaths, thankfully, but there had been serious injuries sustained on both sides that had required a healer from the Water Tribes. Hence, her arrival. Besides needing to lend a helping hand to the recovery of those involved, it was required that any time there was a fight between nations, the representative of each would meet to discuss the situation.  

It's early morning when she sets foot in the Fire Nation palace and she finds she's suddenly exhausted from her night of travel. Considering the hour, she makes her way through the familiar halls of the castle, her feet leading the way to her usual rooms- always kept ready for her- and so full of her belongings that one might think she lived there regularly. She thinks she might catch a few hours of sleep before Aang would arrive for the meeting, as he'd been much further inland in the Earth Kingdom than she. Her rooms are one hall over from Zuko's, though she knows it's far too early to give him a greeting. But just as she's taking the turn down the hall to her rooms, she hears the sound of a door opening. "Katara," his smooth, tenor vocals greet, and she can hear the smile in his voice before she turns around to face him.  

"You're up early," she teases as he approaches her, casually dressed in a crimson tunic with his hair tied back. "The sun has only just come up."  

He knows it; he had woken from his slumber just before the sun had come up over the horizon, the images of his dream fading away. It had been a dream of her, it always was, he supposes it always would be. The moment his eyes had opened, he'd felt compelled to dress and watch the sunrise from his window, before, despite the early hour, deciding to step out and perhaps take a walk down to the gardens. And then... There she had been. "I would say the same to you, but it looks like you've not slept all night." Her blue tunic was wrinkled and she looks tired- but the smile she flashes transforms her, changes her.  

"I've not," she admits, "were you going down to the gardens?" She asks, to which he nods, and she falls into step beside him. 

"Shouldn't you sleep?" He asks, though he's filled with warmth, well aware of how her arm brushes against his when they take to the stairs she's only just come up.  

"I will," she shrugs, stifling a yawn as they come upon the main floor. "Aang was a few hours behind me yet, I'll sleep before he comes." Together they step out of the doors that lead into the center courtyard, which by walking down the stone pathway, leads them towards the gardens. "How are things?" She asks then, shifting her gaze towards him as they head to their usual spot beside the pond that sits at the very center of the garden. The garden is overflowing with lush greenery and sunset colored flowers of every kind, far more in bloom this morning than ever before.  

Zuko drops down to the ground a moment after she does; across the way, the turtle ducklings snooze beneath the shade of a bush. "Better," he says, thinking back to her last visit, when an uprising had resulted in the death of an innocent child from a peasant village in the outskirts of the Nation. "There's been less grumblings... Well, at least until this one." 

"It seems the Earth Kingdom villagers were to blame for this one," Katara says, leaning back on her hands as she stares out across the pond. "There's still some people out there who aren't ready to trust what we're doing," she feels that familiar twinge of pain she always feels when she knows the world isn't quite ready to trust Aang and Zuko's promises of peace. While she understands the hesitation, she only wishes that soon all of the world would believe in them as she did. "But... They'll come around." She casts her gaze back to him and finds his golden eyes already looking at her, as they usually are.  

For a short while they make small talk, until Katara's yawns come so often she cannot get out a single word. "Get some rest," Zuko says as he helps her up onto her feet. "Should I walk you to your rooms?" She's a little unsteady on her feet, but she grins, shaking her head as his hand steadies her. "I'll send for you when the others arrive," he goes on and she nods, knowing she might sleep away the afternoon if he didn't. He watches her as she wanders away, stopping only once, all so she can lean down and breathe in the sweet scent of the fire lilies that grow along the stone path.  

And then she's gone, disappearing through the doors.

She wakes to the sound of knocking on her chamber door, followed by the sound of it opening; it's Padme, of course, the maid she's befriended in the time since Zuko had been crowned. Though Katara had at first rejected the idea of having a maid help her whatsoever, Padme's gentle yet forceful nature had brought her around quite quickly. They formed a bond that now Katara was thankful for. "The others have arrived," the woman says as she bustles around the room, carrying with her fresh clothes that she drapes over the foot of the bed Katara still lays within. "The Fire Lord says take your time." Padme is saying, but Katara yawns, pushing the sheet away from herself before she swings her legs over the edge of the bed. It was quite like her sweet natured lady to not want to keep the other's waiting.  

Like Katara, she'd not been prepared for the relationship she's built with the young woman. Peasant born, the waterbender was not used to having someone help her as Padme did, but it had not taken long for them to become close. There was a softness, a tenderness that she felt for the young woman. "It's the afternoon," she observes as she rises up from the bed, casting a quick glance towards the window where the afternoon sunlight spills in through her curtains. "Aang should have been here hours ago."  

Padme smiles, rolling her dark eyes good naturedly. She wonders how much longer they would play this game of not knowing the truth, or rather, when they would accept just how they truly felt. Everyone else could see it, the truth of the feelings shared between the two of them. "He wanted you to rest," she says simply, thinking back to the Fire Lord's words when he'd found her in the halls just after Katara had arrived to her rooms. Let her sleep, the meeting can wait. "He was worried about you."  

Katara smiles faintly as she tugs on her fresh clothing.  

She can't help it.

After the meeting ends, she finds herself alone with him once again.  

"That went well," she says as she slides up onto the table beside where he still yet sits in his chair. He's well dressed in robes of black, his hair tied back and a golden comb tucked into place, looking every inch the Fire Lord that he was. "With Aang's return to the Earth Kingdom tomorrow, I think all will be quiet. At least for now."  

Zuko is listening to her, but only halfway. Instead, he's distracted by her, as he's been for the entire meeting (or for the last five years, really, but he's not going to point that out, even in the confines of his own mind). She's fresh and smiling, wearing robes of gray and blue he's never seen before, her long dark hair plaited down her back and secured with a blue ribbon. "You know... I was thinking..." Her voice pulls him back from his thoughts and he blinks, sitting up a little bit straighter as she goes on. "I was thinking I might stay awhile." She turns to face him, her sapphire eyes strong and true in their gaze. "I only mean... Since Sokka is back home and Aang will be in the Earth Kingdom, I thought I might stay here in the Fire Nation, since I'm not really needed anywhere else..."  

"I'd like that," he says simply, honestly, happily.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how Kabru deprives himself.

Kabru as a character is intertwined with the idea that sometimes we have to sacrifice the needs of the few for the good of the many. He ultimately subverts this first by sabotaging the Canaries and then by letting Laios go, but in practice he's already been living a life of self-sacrifice.

Saving people, and learning the secrets of the dungeons to seal them, are what's important. Not his own comforts. Not his own desires. He forces them down until he doesn't know they're there, until one of them has to come spilling out during the confession in chapter 76.

Specifically, I think it's very significant, in a story about food and all that it entails, that Kabru is rarely shown eating. He's the deuteragonist of Dungeon Meshi, the cooking manga, but while meals are the anchoring points of Laios's journey, given loving focus, for Kabru, they're ... not.

I'm sure he eats during dungeon expeditions, in the routine way that adventurers must when they sit down to camp. But on the surface, you get the idea that Kabru spends most of his time doing his self-assigned dungeon-related tasks: meeting with people, studying them, putting together that evidence board, researching the dungeon, god knows what else. Feeding himself is secondary.

He's introduced during a meal, eating at a restaurant, just to set up the contrast between his party and Laios's. And it's the last normal meal we see him eating until the communal ending feast (if you consider Falin's dragon parts normal).

First, we get this:

Kabru's response here is such a non-answer, it strongly implies to me that he wasn't thinking about it until Rin brought it up. That he might not even be feeling the hunger signals that he logically knew he should.

They sit down to eat, but Kabru is never drawn reaching for food or eating it like the rest of his party. He only drinks.

It's possible this means nothing, that we can just assume he's putting food in his mouth off-panel, but again, this entire manga is about food. Cooking it, eating it, appreciating it, taking pleasure in it, grounding yourself in the necessary routine of it and affirming your right to live by consuming it. It's given such a huge focus.

We don't see him eat again until the harpy egg.

What a significant question for the protagonist to ask his foil in this story about eating! Aren't you hungry? Aren't you, Kabru?

He was revived only minutes ago after a violent encounter. And then he chokes down food that causes him further harm by triggering him, all because he's so determined to stay in Laios's good graces.

In his flashback, we see Milsiril trying to spoon-feed young Kabru cake that we know he doesn't like. He doesn't want to eat: he wants to be training.

Then with Mithrun, we see him eating the least-monstery monster food he can get his hands on, for the sake of survival- walking mushroom, barometz, an egg. The barometz is his first chance to make something like an a real meal, and he actually seems excited about it because he wants to replicate a lamb dish his mother used to make him!

...but he doesn't get to enjoy it like he wanted to.

Then, when all the Canaries are eating field rations ... Kabru still isn't shown eating. He's only shown giving food to Mithrun.

And of course the next time he eats is the bavarois, which for his sake is at least plant based ... but he still has to use a coping mechanism to get through it.

I don't think Kabru does this all on purpose. I think Kui does this all on purpose. Kabru's Post Traumatic Stress Disorder should be understood as informing his character just as much as Laios's autism informs his. It's another way that Kabru and Laios act as foils: where Laios takes pleasure in meals and approaches food with the excitement of discovery, Kabru's experiences with eating are tainted by his trauma. Laios indulges; Kabru denies himself. Laios is shown enjoying food, Kabru is shown struggling with it.

And I can very easily imagine a reason why Kabru might have a subconscious aversion towards eating.

Meals are the privilege of the living.

url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isn’t as perfect at finding everything, but it’s generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it “look at my croissant”) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it won’t necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find it’s still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order

url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case you’re taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memes 

url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now

url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if you’re looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc

url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if you’re looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quickly 

url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I don’t know why you have audio posts tagged croissant) 

the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog! 

caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or “custom theme”) enabled. a “custom theme” is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. I’ve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks. 

if the person doesn’t have a “custom theme” enabled, you’re beholden to the search bar. still, I’ve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else

if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if you’re able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, you’ll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and it’ll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if there’s no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)

So I’ve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.

I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.

See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disney’s attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people don’t understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. They’ve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.

I’m not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.

Like — it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldn’t do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.

In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just weren’t married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.

They weren’t the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream “family-friendly” company to do it.

Conservatives lost their damn minds.

Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I can’t tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.

When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney — because historically speaking, it’s been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. That’s when I became aware of their unofficial “Gay Days” and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.

Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends — it’s amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America. 

Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from “a few bad things happened that weren’t actually Disney’s fault, but they did happen” to “Pocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.”

Like — please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disney’s first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.

The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. It’s not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. It’s not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.

This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I don’t like it any more than you do, and I’m not about to defend most of Disney’s business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized people… that’s genuinely scary.

Like… I’ll just ask you this. Where do you think we’d be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disney’s prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.

The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.

I keep seeing people say “I need them both to lose!” and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.

Right now, this isn’t just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. It’s a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.

Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.

The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.

That’s what they’re most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.

They’re afraid that they won’t be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.

So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and they’re doing it with Disney.
