oh my god i don't speak to my dad anymore cuz hes nutty but i know what he does for a living
and musk is currently pulling a "the software govs use is 50 years old which means there can be no advances"
and that's..... that's what my dad does for a living, he gets paid 500-1k an hour to make software that specifically communicates with old legacy software cause he's a 90s dev who knows the old languages still and it's more efficient to hire a freak who knows how to make something to bridge between the old and new programs than to fully trash the old system
like there's literally consultants that get hired for that specific purpose and as a software guy musk KNOWS this

Page Turner (Kageyama Tobio x Reader) Part 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~🫐~🫐~🫐~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary: The last place one would think to find Kageyama Tobio is a public library. But when he feels like he’s reached a wall in his progress as a professional volleyball athlete, he turns to books for help. Luckily, the closest library to him has a cute manager that’s eager to help.
Word Count: 5,823
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 A/N: Fanart credit to the Haikyuu pookie bear herself: Loony (Z) on TikTok and freaka_loonyz on Instagram. Go support her work, I drool over every post.
-
As hard as it is to believe, Kageyama Tobio had never stepped foot in a public library before. At least, not that he could remember anyway. When he was younger, his grandpa or sister probably dragged him to one once or twice but he’s never gone to one on his own with the intention of finding a book. He’s never had any reason to go to a library until today but he’s reached a point in his volleyball career where he feels like he’s not improving anymore.
Every set, serve and spike he does feels flawless but he feels he could still do better. There’s got to be something he can work on, but he doesn’t know where to start. And with a big Adlers championship game approaching quickly, he’s more eager than ever to make sure he’s at his best.
Obviously, online articles and websites were the first place he went to read all he could about things like form and technique but after a while, he felt like he was just reading the same things over and over again. When his friend Akaashi suggested trying to find an actual book to see if there’s older research that could help him, he was hesitant (as his academic career was a little lackluster and reading wasn’t his strong suit) but figured he had nothing to lose.
That’s how he found himself walking through the front doors of the closest public library. It was pretty small for a public library and he didn’t see many people inside which was a good thing. He couldn’t go anywhere anymore without being bombarded with admirers. While it was flattering, it was starting to get mildly annoying. Luckily, this felt like a place he wouldn’t have to worry about a swarm of fans. He could lie low, blend in with the other people inside and try to find a book that will help ease his worries.
-
Being the general manager of one of the smallest public libraries in Tokyo had its fair share of pros and cons. It's a relatively simple gig, it pays decently and you have more time to read than you know what to do with. Once all of the returned books are reshelved, new books are entered into the system, other miscellaneous chores are completed and there’s a lull in customers, there’s a book in your hand. It was the greatest job one could ever ask for.
One of the only cons to your job were some of the people you were unfortunate enough to come across. While most of the people that walked into your library were pleasant and fellow book lovers, there were occasionally people that set off warning bells in your brain the second they walked in. Since the library was near a local bar, you would occasionally have a drunk patron wander inside and wreak havoc on your neat shelves. Most leave without fuss after a little gentle persuasion but sometimes an angry drunk will ruin your whole night. Other times, some people will come in with a sour mood and take their frustrations out on you. You’re usually able to stay level-headed and diffuse the situation with ease.
Needless to say, you pride yourself on being able to read the vibe of most people who walk through the door and how you should handle them. However, you’re not quite sure how you should feel about the man that walked through your door one Tuesday evening.
He was tall with a set of broad shoulders. His body was mostly concealed by a long black coat which wasn’t entirely out of the ordinary, seeing how it was the middle of January. A baseball cap was pulled low on his head and he was wearing sunglasses. This normally wouldn’t cause you any concern but when it’s 6pm, there’s barely any sun outside to warrant sunglasses and he doesn’t take the sunglasses off when he gets inside, it raises some flags.
You adjusted the book you held on your lap and fiddled with the pages, trying to decide how you should approach him. Here you were, hoping for a relaxing closing shift and then this shady character walks through your doors.
Besides looking a little suspicious, he doesn’t do anything to make you worry. In fact, he takes a couple steps inside and then just… stares at the rows of shelves. If you didn’t know any better, he looked a little lost. Like he didn’t know how to begin looking for whatever he came to the library to find. You couldn’t tell if he was actually confused or if it was all just an elaborate act and he was actually trying to decide what books he could steal. Nonetheless, you were the manager so it was your responsibility to manage the situation. Kill them with kindness.
“Welcome in, sir! Let me know if I can help you find anything!” you say with a smile.
It seems the stranger hadn’t actually seen you sitting behind the counter of the front desk, because he jumped ever so slightly at the sound of your voice. He looked your way and didn’t say anything for a second. At least, you assumed he was looking at you. With his sunglasses on, it was hard to tell. The silence between the two of you was on the verge of getting awkward until he gave you the slightest of nods.
“Thank you.”
With that, he shoved his hands into the pockets of his long puffy coat and started to wander further back into the library. You watched him shuffle down the long aisle and eventually disappear behind the shelves. Letting out a sigh of relief, you slumped back into your chair and cleared your throat. He was dressed weird but his voice actually sounded quite kind, albeit a little monotone. While he wasn’t completely off your radar yet, you sat a little easier at your desk and decided to focus on your book, leaving the stranger to his business.
Looking down at your book, you settled back into the romantic story. It was a couple minutes later, when out of the corner of your eye, you noticed the man walk to another shelf. You didn’t think anything of it until you started to notice him move to multiple shelves, even revisiting ones he had already been to. When he returned a fourth time to a row of books he had already been to, you started to get concerned. What was he doing?
Book forgotten, you watched his pacing curiously. He seemed to be getting frustrated. Was he having trouble finding what he’s looking for? Deciding to be a good samaritan (and, you supposed, a proper manager), you slid your cafe receipt bookmark into your book and stood up from your chair. You walked around the threshold of the front desk and started approaching the stranger, who was scanning the lines of books he stood in front of. As you got closer, you started to realise how tall this man really was. Definitely over 6 feet tall! It was a little intimidating as you neared him from behind.
Hoping not to scare him like you did the first time, you very lightly knocked on the worn wood shelf that he stood next to. He shifted his gaze (still shrouded by sunglasses) from the books to you. Even with the sunglasses on, you could see the frustrated crease in his brow. You gave him a small smile.
“Are you looking for something specific? I can try to help you find it! These shelves can be hard to comb through when you don’t know where to look.”
The agitation in his face seemed to ease just slightly and he shifted on his feet. He turned to look at the books and then looked back at you. To your surprise, his long, slender hand raised and he slowly shifted the sunglasses off his face. With his face now exposed, you immediately felt your cheeks heat up. It was clear to you now that he looked to be around your age, maybe a little older. 25 or 26 maybe? His eyes were a beautiful shade of dark blue which complimented his sharp features nicely. You also finally took notice of the small hints of black hair that poked out from under his hat.
It took you a second to realize you were staring at him and that he had said something to you. Who could blame you for being star struck, this man was without a doubt the most attractive man you’ve seen come into your library to date.
“S-Sorry, what?”
“I’m not looking for a specific book, but do you have any… fitness related books? Or sports. Or something like that?” His voice was deep and it sent a shiver from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.
“Yes! Yeah, we’ve got a section like that. Follow me!”
You turned on your heel and led him a couple rows down. He followed a few paces behind you and stopped when you faced a large shelf full of various sport books, books about physical training, motivational books and the like. You motioned to the whole isle.
“I think you’ll find what you’re looking for here. Everything is ordered alphabetically by the author’s last name and if you think of a specific book you want to find, there’s a couple computers towards the middle of the library you can use to help track the book down. We also have a large collection of sports magazines available as well that you can check out! Does this help narrow your search down a little?”
The stranger took a second to scan the spines of the books and nodded. “Yes, I should be able to find what I’m looking for. Thank you for your help.”
You gave him a happy smile and started to shuffle back to the front of the library. “Of course! Let me know if you need anything else.”
Giving him one last glance, you walked back to your desk and plopped back down in your chair with a giddy sigh. Of course, the patron you thought was about to rob the library blind ended up being a tall, devilishly handsome twenty-something year old who you were immediately attracted to. You really needed to stop judging people by their appearance, you decided.
After helping a sweet old lady renew her library card, you noticed the stranger approach the small portion of the library that had a couple of comfortable couches and chairs so patrons could sit and read. He held a book in his hands but you couldn’t tell what it was called or what it was about. He stood next to one of the couches and set the book down on the arm rest. Then, he proceeded to shed his long coat and you had to stop yourself from drooling. He wasn’t wearing anything fancy, just a baggy off-white long sleeved shirt and a pair of black athletic pants but boy did he make it work. With the coat off, you could better see his physique. He had a slimmer build, but you could tell he was strong by the way he held his slightly broader shoulders. This man didn’t skip the gym, that’s for sure.
After setting his coat down on the back of the couch, he settled onto one of the cushions and grabbed the book again. He stared at the cover for a second before opening to the first page and started to read.
There he stayed for over an hour, slowly reading through the book. You helped a handful of people at the counter, but mostly spent the rest of your shift reading your own book while occasionally sneaking glances at the man.
20 minutes before closing, he closed the book and slowly stood up. He stretched his arms high above his head which made his shirt ride up, exposing his abdomen which you could now see looked like it had been chiseled from stone.
Pull yourself together, woman. You were 99% sure your nose started bleeding.
The stranger put his coat back on and adjusted the hat on his head before heading back to the shelf he found his book. You presumed he put it back because he then walked back to the front of the library without a book in his hands. You sat up and gave him a big smile as he passed.
“Thanks for coming! Have a good night!”
He looked your way and shoved his hands in his pockets. To your surprise he gave you the tiniest hint of a smile.
“Thank you. You do the same.”
And he left.
-
Your heart fluttered in your chest when the stranger showed up again the next day. And the next. And a couple days after that. Whatever he found in your library must’ve really helped him, because he came in and picked up the same book to read on the couch again. And when he seemed to finish that book, he found a new one.
Your interactions with him were pretty short but had gotten a little more friendly. One time he said hello before you had a chance to say it first! And he’d given you a couple more little smiles!
He always came adorning the same outfit. Some kind of exercise clothing underneath his big coat, a hat and sunglasses. But boy, did he make it look good every time.
While seeing him made your whole shift worth it, you started to feel a little bad. You started to wonder if he came to the library so often because he had to in order to read his books. The stranger (who you realized a week after meeting that you still didn’t know his name) had never set up a library card so he could check out his books and bring them home. Maybe he didn’t like coming to the library but didn’t know how to set up a library card. Or maybe he didn’t even realize it was an option.
These thoughts plagued your conscience for days before you finally decided to just ask him. He seemed friendly enough so you were sure he wouldn’t mind an innocent inquiry. That didn’t stop the nervous butterflies from forming when he came in next, looking handsome as ever of course.
The sunglasses came off as soon as he walked in which was a more recent development, and you swooned a little each time you saw those dark blue eyes. Usually he’d walk past you and give you a tiny smile or a tiny nod or something when you welcome him in but today you stopped him before he walked too far.
“Hey! Can I ask you a question?”
He stopped in his tracks and turned towards you. His eyes were slightly wider than normal, probably surprised by your off script question. Luckily, he didn’t just brush you off like you were sort of expecting him to. You stood up from your chair as he approached the front desk and almost fell to the floor when he lifted his hat just slightly to muss up his hair. Was he scratching an itch? Was he doing it for you? You didn’t know but it was the first time you’d seen past his forehead and you were sure you would feel the same primal urges if he had just stripped naked right in your lobby.
Mentally smacking yourself in the face, you drummed your fingers on the counter and nervously smiled at him. “I was just wondering if you would be interested in setting up a library card? It’s totally free and you can check out as many books as you’d like. That way you don’t have to spend so much time here.”
His expression instantly went from neutral to a little offended. Your heart dropped and you started spewing apologies.
“N-Not that I don’t like having you here! Because I do! I love it when you come in- I mean I love it when anyone comes in. But especially you, I guess. You’re nice and quiet, don’t cause any trouble…”
You felt like you were about to throw up. He went back to his usual neutral self, maybe even had a hint of amusement on his face. With him, it was hard to tell. And lord, his stare was always so intense. He had no trouble keeping eye contact, but you on the other hand? You were looking everywhere but him.
“Anyways, I just wanted to make sure you knew it was an option. I’d feel bad if you felt like the only way to enjoy the books here was staying for hours at a time when you could take them home and enjoy them there.”
You were pretty sure you were sweating through your sweater but he seemed to be pondering what you said. He fiddled with one of the tiny pencils that littered the countertop and shrugged. “I don’t mind coming here. It’s peaceful and I don’t usually frequent places that are quiet like this. But I’ll set one up just in case I don’t have time to stay and read.”
Instantly your worries about possibly offending him vanished and you grinned. “Alright! Let’s get one set up for you. It’s really easy, I’ll just need some basic information.”
You asked him for his address which he, for some reason, was hesitant to give out but you assured him it was just to make sure he lived in the area. Then you asked him for his name and two forms of ID.
“Kageyama Tobio.”
Kageyama Tobio. Finally a name to put to his face, and it fit him perfectly! That and… you couldn’t help but feel like you’d heard his name before. You didn’t go to school with him, right? That would be awkward if you had and didn’t recognize a fellow classmate. Maybe it was a different Kageyama you were thinking of?
Brushing off the feeling you looked at the ID’s he gave you. One driver’s license and his passport. Everything on his ID’s matched the information he had given you so all was well. You couldn’t help but notice that his passport seemed well used and looked to be stamped pretty recently.
“Travel often?” you asked while you grabbed a new library card and started attaching all of his information to it.
The stranger, Kageyama, took his license and passport back and started putting them away in the backpack he always had with him. “Yeah, I leave the country pretty often for…. work.”
“Ah, very cool! Well, here’s your new library card! Anytime you want to check something out you just have to bring the book to one of these computers, scan the book and your card and it’ll be yours for a week!”
He reached out and took the card from your hand, long fingers brushing yours ever so slightly. Guess you were never going to wash that hand again.
“Thank you. I appreciate your help.” He slid the card into his coat pocket and took a step back. “Have a good night (Y/n).”
You watched him with blaring red cheeks as he stepped out into the night. How did he know your name? Was he stalking you? Surely not… he didn’t seem the type. Your concern didn’t last long when you realized you were wearing your name tag.
-
Despite having his new library card, Kageyama continued to stay in the library to read his books. You weren’t sure why (part of you hoped it was because he enjoyed seeing you) but you were glad he felt a sense of peace here that he apparently rarely felt anywhere else. Unfortunately, your conversations with him were still short and sweet. He seemed to either not care too much for conversation or felt too awkward to really talk to you. However, he did make a bit more of an effort to say hi to you when he came in now, one time even waiting until you were finished with another patron to say good evening.
The turning point in your relationship started one Friday night.
It was a rare busy day at the library and you barely had time to think. The library had multiple activities and events planned that day that were very chaotic. Storytimes, an author signing, a tiny book fair, a giant class field trip. With everything happening, your library was in disarray. It took the last two hours of your shift to get everything back in order. Shelves were reorganised, the carpet was vacuumed, and the toilet was unclogged. Some punk 6th grader thought it would be funny to shove 3 whole rolls of toilet paper down the drain. By the time 9pm rolled around, you were wiped and eager to go home.
While you were doing the rounds of the library as a final check to make sure everything was in order before you closed up for the weekend, you almost had a heart attack when you took notice of someone laying on one of the little couches. It was Kageyama and he was sound asleep. His hat was pulled over his eyes and he was snoring ever so slightly. One of his arms dangled off the couch and the other rested over his chest where his book was sitting open. He was so tall, his feet were sticking over one of the armrests. You hadn’t even seen him come in. You must’ve been so preoccupied he didn’t feel like you had time to say hello. He looked so peaceful, you didn’t want to wake him up but unfortunately you couldn’t just leave him here.
Stepping quietly over to him, you very slowly rested your hand over his hand that was laying over the top of his book. It was the first time you were seeing the books he was picking up close.
The Mental Game of Volleyball
Interesting pick, you thought. You gently shook his hand but he didn’t budge so you shook a little harder. It took you a couple more shakes and a hushed “Kageyama” to wake him up. He didn’t startle awake thank goodness, just slowly shifted and lifted the hat off his eyes so he could see. He looked bleary at you and then looked around at where he was.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t want to wake you but I have to close up. It’s 9 o’clock.”
That seemed to wake him up a little because he shuffled into a sitting position while you backed away a little bit. You could’ve sworn you saw the slightest hint of red tinge his cheeks but it could’ve been the low lighting.
“I’m sorry to have kept you waiting. I thought I just dozed off for a couple minutes.” He stood up and started gathering his things while you waved him off.
“No worries! It happens more often than you’d think, I promise. These couches are some of the comfiest things in the universe so I don’t blame you!”
He had a small smile on his face when he threw his coat on. The both of you walked back towards the front of the library after he put his book back on the shelf (you didn’t make a comment about how he could just bring it with him) and you flipped almost all of the lights off, leaving just a couple on so you could see when you came back in on Monday. Kageyama shuffled forward so he could hold the door open for you, which you thanked him for. It took you a couple seconds to lock the doors before you both started to head towards the parking lot. A lone car sat waiting, which you assumed was Kageyama’s. It looked like a pretty new model and it was dark blue in color. You smiled internally. It matched his eyes! You noticed him looking around the lot and turned to you in question.
“Where’s your car?”
“Ah, I take the bus! I do have a car but my sister is currently using it because she works late shifts at the hospital and the buses usually aren’t running by the time she gets off work so I want to make sure she has a ride home. I don’t mind it actually! It’s a nice calming end to my day.”
Kageyama was fidgeting with his car keys as you both approached his car. The bus stop was just a couple minute walk from here so you were just planning on saying your goodbyes once you reached his vehicle. You were about to tell him to have a goodnight before he interrupted you.
“Can I walk you to the bus stop? It’s late and dark. I would offer you a ride home but figured you would maybe… not be comfortable with that. Seeing as how we don’t know each other too well…” his voice tapered off and you were sure you were seeing red on his cheeks this time. It warmed your heart that he wanted to make sure you were safe but also took into consideration your possible hesitancy to get a ride home from an almost stranger.
“I’d love for you to join me on my walk! It’s not too far so it shouldn’t take up too much of your time.”
He seemed relieved you agreed to let him come. Together you both started walking towards the bus stop. It was a quiet walk at first, not too uncomfortable but you definitely wanted to try to fill the silence.
“I noticed you’re reading a book about volleyball. Do you like the sport?”
He looked at you in mild surprise before nodding a little bit, one of his small smiles creeping onto his face. “I enjoy it, yeah.”
“Cool! I’m not big into sports in general to be honest. I’m not very coordinated so they’re not my strong suit but they’re fun to watch! I guess if I had to pick a favorite, volleyball would be pretty high on my list. I’m not good at it but it was a fun unit in gym class! I’ve been seeing quite a few news segments about volleyball recently. I don’t follow it too often but people sure like it around here. Actually, I think one of Japan’s professional teams practices near here, right? What are they called… it’s some kind of bird name I think?”
Kageyama didn’t say anything but you could see that he was smiling more than you had ever seen him smile before. Were you completely off? If he’s reading a volleyball book, he must follow the game closely and you probably just embarrassed the hell out of yourself with your limited knowledge. While you were mentally beating yourself up, the two of you reached the bus stop. It was void of people, and void of a bus. Kageyama didn’t make any moves to leave you at the stop alone so you turned to face him.
“I’m probably way wrong. All my volleyball knowledge about teams and such comes from the news, ads or passing conversations in a store.” you said with a laugh, hoping to save at least some of your dignity. To your surprise, Kageyama actually laughed a little bit with you. It was a beautiful sound that you doubted you’d ever forget. You had a feeling he didn’t laugh too often so it was something special to hear.
You smiled and shifted your gaze down the street, watching for the bus. You were dreading for this moment to end. While you had embarrassed yourself, you had also made Kageyama laugh which trumped the humiliation.
Looking around some more, a poster hung up on the walls of the bus stop caught your eye. “Speak of the devil!” you exclaimed, walking up to the flyer.
 It was a poster for the volleyball team you had just been talking about. The poster was advertising a big championship game. “Look! I wasn’t crazy, they do have a bird name. The Schweiden Adlers. Looks like they have a big game coming up.” Looking closer at the poster, you noticed the date of the game. “Oh! It’s tomorrow!”
Kageyama walked up to stand next to you, observing the poster himself. He didn’t say anything, just listened to you.
“Looks like a pretty big game! They’re playing the best volleyball team in America. Very cool. ‘Come watch some of the greatest volleyball players in Japan!’” You continued to scan the page until you read one of the text boxes that was bolded darker than most of the rest of the poster.
Featuring key players of the Japan Men’s National team, including the two-time Olympic champion setter: Kageyama Tobio
You stared at the text while your brain tried to catch up to what you had just read. This was just a coincidence. There’s no way the Kageyama standing next to you was an Olympic champion, right? There’s probably another Kageyama Tobio. However, you started to look at the picture on the poster and almost fainted. Right there, in the middle of the team picture, was your Kageyama. He wore a white jersey with some black and gold accents and a large number 20 right in the middle of it. He was surrounded by his teammates, and they seemed to be fresh off a game because they looked exhausted but exhilarated, sweat dripping down their necks.
Slack jawed, you glanced over at him. He was watching you, gaging your reaction to this news.
“Sorry I didn’t tell you anything about what I do. It just never came up and nowadays it’s hard to find strangers who don’t recognize me. You were a nice change of pace. Someone who treated me like a regular person. That’s one of the reasons I like coming to your library so much.”
 Everything was starting to fall in place. Why he always wore a hat and sunglasses and looked like he was hesitant to show his face. Why he was always wearing athletic attire. The books he read. You felt a little stupid for not putting it all together earlier.
“N-No, it’s ok! I should’ve probably put two and two together a little sooner. I recognized your name when you set up the library card, but couldn’t remember where I had heard it before. Now I know I have definitely heard your name on the news. But… you’re an Olympic athlete?! What is that like?”
He looked a little sheepish now that you sort of knew who he was. Reaching up, he took off his hat entirely which was the first time he had ever done so in front of you. His hair was a little messy from being in the hat for so long but it looked good on him. He had black hair but when the light hit it just right, it had some blue undertones. And boy did it look soft.
“It’s every athlete’s dream. Getting to play the greatest volleyball players from all over the world was exciting and I hope I get more chances to go. That’s why I’ve been coming to your library. To try to find ways I can improve.”
You nodded in understanding and let out a little laugh. “I’m sure you’ll get a chance to go again. I mean, this poster is basically calling you the greatest setter in all of Japan so your chances look pretty good! So how did-“
You were cut off when the loud sounds of a  bus started pulling into the station. You wanted to ask him so many more questions but it seemed like they’d have to wait. Hopefully he’ll still feel comfortable coming back to the library, now that you sort of know who he is. Shifting on your feet, you stepped towards the bus.
“Well it’s nice to officially meet you Kageyama! I’m excited to hear about the championship game-“ He stopped your goodbye by reaching out and gently grabbing your forearm.
“Come to the game tomorrow. I-I have an extra ticket that’ll give you a front row seat, and I have a couple of friends going that can keep you company. It should be a fun game to watch.”
Shocked by the invitation, you stammered with a response. “B-But I don’t want to be a bother and steal your extra ticket! And I don’t even really know how volleyball works, just the basics-“
“My friends can teach you while you watch. Trust me, you’ll probably wish they’d stop talking by the end of the game. That and there’s no one else I’d want to give the ticket to. I want you to come.” He looked almost desperate.
You really didn’t have a reason why you couldn’t go. The only thing on your agenda tomorrow was watering your plants. “Alright, yeah I’ll come! Umm… but how do I get my ticket and where do I go-“
“I’ll give you my number and send you your ticket. One of my friends can meet you outside the stadium and show you where to go. I’ll text you all the details. Does that work?”
He gave a lopsided smile when you nodded in agreement. Quickly exchanging phone numbers, you waved goodbye as you got on the bus and watched him start walking back to his car. Butterflies were running rampant in your stomach and your mind was racing.
This random stranger, who turned out to be one of the best of the best in volleyball, just asked you to come watch his game. You! A little library manager! What should you wear? Are Kageyama’s friends nice? How do you score a point in volleyball again? What’s Kageyama going to look like when he’s in his element?
Tomorrow was shaping up to be an interesting day.
30 Things I Learned As An Adult
In honor of me turning 30 in January, I’ve decided to write out a list of 30 things I learned as an adult.  Now, some of these worked for me through trial and error, while others did not.
1. Self Care Is Important
I cannot stress this enough.  We all need to practice self care, to take time for ourselves.  It takes baby steps to find a good self-care routine, and there’s plenty of online resources to find one to your tastes.  Remember it is all about trial and error, and don’t worry about perfecting it right away.  Research some different self care routines online as a starting point.
2. Read Books, Not Fanfiction
Okay, don’t get me wrong, I do love reading some good ole fanfiction, and current events.  However, definitely pick up a book once in a while.  Whether it’s a graphic novel, comics, manga, please develop a reading habit.  It definitely helped me out a lot as a former college dropout, there are reading lists on sites like Goodreads, here on Tumblr, even colleges have lists what books students are required to read.  And it does help with expanding your knowledge and vocabulary.  As I’ve previously said, I’m a former college dropout who’s currently back in school, however, developing a healthy reading habit is what kept me grounded.  If you need a starting point, I recommend reading a fiction book, preferably in the SciFi/Fantasy genre; or reread a book from your childhood.  Also, PLEASE GET A LIBRARY CARD!  You’ll definitely be saving a lot of money, and we need to support our public libraries now more than ever.
3. Say “No” More Often
If you don’t feel comfortable going out, or if your manager calls and asks to cover a shift, just say “no.”  Remember, you have the power to set boundaries, especially with family, friends, and work.  This correlates to number 1 on my list, self care is super important, and you cannot put your health at risk for anyone.  I’m going to repeat that last part: SELF CARE IS SUPER IMPORTANT, AND YOU CANNOT PUT YOUR HEALTH AT RISK FOR ANYONE!
4. Register To Vote, And Vote In Every Election
With politics being so polarized and divisive in the past decade, and the upcoming 2024 US Presidential Election, please register to vote.  And voter suppression has been very rampant in the past two, arguably three, decades.  To anyone about to turn 18 here in the US, please register to vote ASAP!  And vote in every goddamn election, both national and local.  I seriously cannot stress this enough.
5. Eat Healthy, No Seriously
I love some fast food once in a while now, however, please take some time to learn about healthy eating.  It will catch up with you in the future, and our US healthcare system is already fucked as all hell.  I know the rising costs of everything, including food, is insane right now; but please keep informed about how to prepare good healthy food.
6. Take Breaks From Current Events, Social Media, and the Internet
This also correlates with number one.  While it is very important to stay informed with what is happening in the world/country of origin; especially with the US Presidential Election year.  Remember, it’s okay to take breaks from reading too much news, and scrolling through social media feeds.  It really does have an effect on your mental health, and unfortunately too many people tend to fall down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole on all sides of the political spectrum.  To the teenagers and young adults, take breaks and focus on your mental health and well-being.  To the adults, read the previous sentence.  With everything so polarizing, take care of yourself first.
7. High School Friends DO NOT LAST!
My friends from high school and early college years were definitely the “ride and die” type of  friends, metaphorically speaking.  If you have that one friend who was/is the “give the shirt off their back” type, check in on them once in a while.  However, with the former, just move on.  The friends I had in high school definitely had a lot of childhood trauma, and in one aspect, I’m glad that they were honest about it; it was/is a way to heal.  However, any “friend” who just doesn’t want to better themselves and use you for any convenience, DUMP THEM AND CUT OFF ALL CONTACT!  Remember just as you set boundaries with your toxic family members, and even for your job, you should do the same with friends.
8. Change Jobs, ASAP!
This is a very important one.  I didn’t really have a job as a teenager, I wanted to enjoy being a kid for a little longer, however, I did have an occasional babysitting job.  At 23 years old, I got a job at a fast food place.  While I do appreciate part of the experience, like how to use the “customer service” voice, however, any red flags that pop up in your head, change jobs, ASAP!  It was toxic, too political (for some weird reason) and a lot of drama (and not from the teenagers).  The grocery store I work at now does have its busy times, however, it’s much more calmer, and I don’t see too many “Karen” types.
9. Declutter More Often
This is also a definite must as you get older.  Whatever you don’t need anymore, donate them.  Whatever is completely broken, throw it away!  Whatever it is that is in good condition, sell it or maybe give it to someone as a birthday/holiday present.  Any old makeup, throw it away!  It’ll help reduce the amount of clutter and mess.  If you need a starting point, I suggest the KonMari method.  It really did help me out a lot.
10.  Use A Planner
This is a life-and-time saver.  Write down any appointments, cleaning days, paydays, bill charges, etc.; into a physical planner.  If you’re in college, please use one!  And write down any assignments to work on/turn in BEFORE the deadline.  Also, anything important, put into your calendar app on your phone and laptop as a reminder.
11.  Have A Skin Care Routine
Okay, I know having a skin care routine isn’t for everyone, and we all have different reactions to skin care products; however, don’t be afraid to experiment with a good skin care routine.  In my early teen years, I used Proactiv skin care for my acne, and it helped out a lot.  Remember: cleanse, tone, any serum of your choice, and moisturize.  This also helps out if you don’t feel like jumping into the shower.  Also, use sunscreen, seriously.
12.  Don’t Get Married, Until You’re Ready
This is coming from someone who is single, lol.  If you plan on getting married to your romantic partner, I’m proud of you! Marriage is about communication, being honest, and doing equal amount of work (finances, household chores, etc.)  Save money if you’re planning for a wedding, or go to your local courthouse to get a marriage license if you don’t want the big, fancy reception.
13.  Don’t Have Kids, Until You’re Ready
Again, this is coming from someone who is single and childless, lol.  Having kids is a lot of work: physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially.  Not everyone is capable of being a parent, and I have read PLENTY of posts on here and other websites about toxic parents/parenting styles.  Take time and think about if you’re ready to become a parent.
14.  Learn How To Budget Your Money
This is for anyone of any age out there.  Please learn how to budget your spending.  Look for stuff on sale or clearance, or cut back on certain types of spending. I know most people have no idea where to start, but there is! There’s some great websites and YouTube channels on how to budget your money. Another great tool to use are spreadsheets like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. I use a Google Sheet template to help track my spending and budget my finances. Also, if you have gift cards from your birthday/holidays/etc; definitely use them, you won't be breaking your bank account :). Also, definitely have some paper cash in your wallet for emergency use.
15.  Open A Savings/Emergency Funds Account, ASAP!
This is a huge one to have as an adult, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Anything left over from paying the bills, from a side hustle, or from your tax returns, put that into savings.  Certain banks will also have the option of creating “financial goals” in savings accounts; so I highly recommend using that as well.  This also correlates with number 14.  If you’re interested, open two or three savings accounts, the last one should only be for emergency funds.
16.  Get A Physical Hobby, AKA Exercise!
It doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do, please do it!  And for anyone who is physically disabled, there are modified options provided on YouTube.  We do lose certain motor functions as we age, so definitely pick an exercise that’s right for you, as they say. Even if it's just going outside for a walk for 30 minutes, please do some type of exercise.
17.  Learn How To Meal Prep
It doesn’t have to be for every meal of every day, pick a meal you want to make and prepare ahead of time.  And prepare that meal the day before, so it will be on hand when you leave your house. There are some great videos on YouTube, and some ideas from Pinterest if you need a starting point.
18.  If You’re Able To, Go To The Dentist!
Seriously though, try and go for a checkup/teeth cleaning.  You’re only given one set of teeth after all your baby teeth fall out, and you need to take good care of them.  If you’re able to, or live near to one, local colleges have free cleanings through their dental training programs.
19.  If Your Job Offers a 401K, GET ON IT NOW!
My old job at a fast food restaurant didn’t have retirement benefits, but my current grocery store job does.  I jumped on it right away, even if it’s not the job I want right now.  And it’s a good starting point to have some money saved up for retirement. If you leave the job that has a 401k, you can do what's called a rollover. This will put the money that was set into the first retirement fund into another one; you can do this with your bank or if your new job has a 401k.
20.  If You Don’t Have Health Insurance, Sign Up With The State, or Through Your Job.
In my experience, I have insurance through the state at the moment.  If your job offers health insurance as well, jump on it right away, even if it’s not the job you want, it’ll be a starting point that correlates with number 19.
21.  It’s Okay To Not Go To College
This is coming from someone who was a college dropout at 19, and currently back in school.  If you don’t feel ready to go to college, that’s okay too.  College is very expensive, especially here in the US, and not everyone can get a scholarship, even if they did apply for a lot of them.  Maybe get a part-time job or two (for some income), explore some hobbies you enjoy, and take some time to think about some goals.
22. If You’re In College, It’s Okay To Stay At Home
Again, coming from a former college dropout, I stayed at home while attending a nearby community college in another state.  However, out-of-state tuition and housing is also very expensive.  If you have a good relationship with your parents, and if you’re going to school in-state, talk to them about staying home while going to school.  If you don’t, then talk to a trusted friend or family member about getting an apartment together that isn’t on-site housing while you’re attending school.
23. Watch Non-English Language Movies
If you’re a movie lover like me, take some time to watch some foreign language films once in a while; and I know we anime fans do, lol.  To be honest, it does get very boring watching English language films all the time, whether from the States, England, or Canada.  Watching foreign language movies will definitely help you to understand the world a lot better, if you don’t have the means for traveling yet; and they will help you to understand that no matter where we live, we all have similar issues, hopes, dreams, etc.  If you need a starting point, I recommend any of the Studio Ghibli movies, I would start with Kiki’s Delivery Service; or Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth.
24. SET BOUNDARIES
Remember: toxic family members and friends are not worth it.  You are worthy and valid for love and respect.  This correlates to number 7.  This is also very useful in the workplace.
25. Express Yourself Through Fashion
Like everyone else, I feel most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt myself; however sometimes I like to dress up just for fun, or to build up my self esteem and image.  This also helps when learning to pair an accessory with an outfit.  Play around with different color palettes and clothing styles, and find the one you feel the most “you.”  For example, I’ve always looked my best in jewel tones and a cooler color palette.  Read some fashion articles or watch some YouTube videos about how to pick out an outfit.
26. It Is Not Selfish To Prioritize Yourself
This correlates with number 3.  I have noticed it’s mostly a Western/American/Christian culture norm, we’re always told to take care of others before taking care of ourselves; or we’re selfish for prioritizing ourselves over others. It is not selfish, it is part of self care. Again, this is tied in with number 24.
27.   Failing and Making Mistakes Is Part of Growing
There is so much societal pressure on trying to be successful in life and work, especially in the Western/American hemisphere. However, making mistakes and failing at something is part of growing, and learning as an individual.
28. It's Okay to Not Have a Label to Define Yourself
Hear me out. I understand the use of labels in society and culture in general; everyone wants to belong somewhere and feel accepted. However, it is okay to not have a label to define who you are, and who you want/choose to be. Take all the time you need to figure out what's best for you. And sometimes people don't realize a label will fit them until they are much older in life. Or they couldn't at the time.
29. Don't Compare, You'll Get There
We are human, and we all have the tendency to compare ourselves to others. Unfortunately, this doesn't end after high school and college. And that needs to seriously change, especially in the Western/American hemisphere. Simply writing down "don't compare, you'll get there" is a great reminder to have for yourself. Everyone learns and grows at their own pace.
30. It Really Is The Little Things That Keep Us Going
When life seems to get too hard, it really is the little things that keep us going. Whether it is something as simple as someone holding a door open for you, or someone complimenting* you on your outfit or your work ethic; those moments are the ones that matter the most. Remember those moments, hold on to them.
I went to give public comment at my county's library board meeting this week. The library board was considering requests to ban books presented by a local far right group. They included Flamer, Genderqueer, All Boys Aren't Blue, Zenobia July, Looking for Alaska, and a couple others I don't remember.
The collections manager for the library system gave an excellent presentation on the laws and policies that govern collection management and also brought a copy of a Holocaust history book (I think it was Why The Germans, Why The Jews) in to show that it had been defaced with swastikas and antisemitic phrases and talk about the quiet censorship problem in our libraries.
The actual meeting itself lasted 5 hours, and the board chair refused to eject members of the far right faction who were disrupting the meeting and trying to pick fights. One of them even said "let's take this outside" to someone asking them to be quiet and let the meeting continue.
I'm pretty used to seeing and receiving hateful rhetoric and messages online. Comes with the territory of being an out trans woman online. But it felt different spending 5 hours in a room with people who are openly calling you a groomer and saying you're sexualizing kids. Who are trying to claim that the exclusion of queer people from public life is just "common sense" and "having community standards".
They also claimed that the director of the American Library Association wanted to turn all libraries in the country into transgender Marxist recruiting centers and because of the the local library system should cut ties with the ALA.
I guess I'm probably mostly writing this down to process it. It was a lot, and also a powerful reminder that the fascists are here. They're in our communities, they're trying (and at least here, partially succeeding) to control local politics. For me at least it's one thing to see it online. That feels at least a little removed. Seeing it in person was scary, but it feels good to have been part of resisting it and successfully opposing book bans locally.
Plastic hearts - (9)
But what would you do if I went to touch you now?What would you do if they never found us out? What would you do if we never made a sound?
🤭👀🦋
---
You appointed your sous chef to run the restaurant while you wanted to work the first few months to get the school lunch system in order. The kitchen facility was much less advanced to what you had access to before and the menu needed a revamp. None of the kids were getting any nutritious meals in and upon further research it was easier to understand why not many students were willing to have their meals here. For the price they were paying, they did not receive food they liked.
The benefit of being from an established restaurant meant you got your own office within the school and it felt empowering. To have your own corner. It felt like as the days passed, your sleeplessness was getting worse and all you could think of was how hard it was to try and be anything else other than what this world expected women to be. You wanted to quit your job or resort to being comfortable with just being in the background.
It was like a new wave of bitterness and futility that had taken every woman by a storm. A few of them were like zombies, not lively as they had once been before. The hallway chatter had died down, a lot of companies began to struggle, all over the world it was becoming more apparent. That if women were taken out of the system, it began to fail on itself.
But through this you were facing another unique challenge on your own. You had asked for time with Ken, to contemplate on that friendship and process his return. You had at minimum expected him to have popped up into your life again to remind you he needed an answer, or buy his way in with treats and flamboyant gestures to convince you he was trying but none of that happened over the past week. He was firstly busy with his schedule but then he never went out of his way to find you. But even if he had done so you would know because you were avoiding him, only out of the need to observe him from afar.
Once the meals for the day and week were sorted all that you needed to do was oversee the execution and make sure the pantry was stocked with the required ingredients while managing the budget. Which gave you a little extra time to snoop around.
You opened up your phone to start the first step, to check if he had any social media presence and your search came up with nothing. He wasn’t anywhere online. He would turn up to school 10 mins early just to be there to welcome the kids who needed to come to library to study and some days would surprise them with a box of donuts.
When you walked down the corridors you would always here the sound of children laughing and him making jokes. The more you observed him to try to find a characteristic that could label him or show you that deep down he was just as bad as any other guy, you couldn’t. There was no flaw.
Come lunch time, he would sit alone to have his meal, his eyes occasionally catching yours when you stood behind the counter and before he could initiate a conversation you would leave, to hide inside the service area.
It was just that when you’ve wanted to be right so badly, admitting defeat to being proven wrong made you feel a lot more humiliated.
You were walking back to your office post the lunch rush when you could hear him down the hallway. His voice animated as he narrated a story and it drew you towards the library door. From the glass window in it, you could seen him, wearing a paper crown while all the other children were gathered around him wearing some form of character related clothing, all taking part in the story telling.
The smile on these toddler’s faces caused you to smile too. But there was one issue that you couldn’t resolve. How was it that he had brought forth a change in himself while you were struggling for it? even after having visited the real world before you did.
“God, he’s so good with kids. It’s unbelievable.”, someone slid up next to you. Turning to see who it was, you found yourself standing next to the school principal.
“He just turned up at my doorstep one day. I was skeptical cause he had no work experience but look at that face.”, she smirked.
You weren’t interested in listening to her take, it astonished you that most failed to value him for his character and only chose to exploit him for his physical beauty.
“Who can stay no to all of that?”, she gossiped but your eyes could only focus on him.
His sandy blonde hair turning golden as it caught the afternoon light, the pastel pink shirt he wore reminded you of where you had come from. It made you feel special, that wherever you were, you and him had that special connection to exist in a world of your own.
“He’s more than that.”, you said confidently to which she hummed half heartedly.
“But just between us girls though. I believe he already has a girlfriend. I tried to kiss him once and he let it slip.”, she shrugged her shoulders as if her comment was well intentioned but it was rather a way of letting you know that you didn’t have any more chance than she did.
“But hey, until I see a ring on that girl’s finger nothing is set in stone.”, she laughed as she patted your arm but you couldn’t find the humor in her statement.
Every day you learnt something new about this city and this place. But to take a step back from your own problems, you only found more. To understand that just as vulnerable as you were, he was too.
As you looked into the class again, his eyes were on you as he settled the kids into their nap time. He stood up, beginning to walk towards you. The hair on your arms stood up with the shameful feeling of having been caught. You weren’t brave enough to stay, to face him. So you bolted the other direction annoyed with yourself that you were behaving like a teenager.
The day was almost over and you were at ease knowing that since today was friday evening, if you snuck out without him knowing, then you had the whole weekend to yourself without this constant gnawing crush feasting on your mind. You couldn’t put yourself through it again, to have him infiltrate your mind. You knew how it went last time, so why try again. You just wanted to snuff before it consumed you whole.
You put away your folders and stepped out after making sure there was no one around. You locked your door and quickly began to walk towards the school entrance, throwing glances over your shoulder keeping a vigilant watch for Ken.
But suddenly you felt a warm hold around your wrist and then a firm tug, which altered your course of direction from the school's entrance to the Janitor’s closet. You were going to scream, absolutely convinced this was an abduction when a hand wrapped around your mouth. Your back rested on his chest as he shushed you, just by the softness of his touch you could tell it was the one man you were trying to hide from.
He watched the crack beneath to door, only to watch a passing shadow and the sound of clicking heels against the floor tiles. But all you could focus on was how his muscles were taut beneath his shirt, his warm breath slipping down the back of your neck and the rhythm of his rapid heart that beat in sync with yours. It was sureal, hearing his heart beat for the first time, it reminded you that he was real.
As the sound faded, he relaxed and let go of you. But you were grateful for the dark, he couldn’t see how deep your cheeks were flushed.
“What were you thinking?”, you whispered quickly.
“I wanted to talk to you.”, he responded.
“You don’t kidnap people for that.”, you gestured around you.
“No, I’ve made sure you don’t take off running again.”, he narrowed his eyes at you.
“Yeah, I see you and your little schemes.”, he continued knowing you remained silent.
“Schemes? What schemes?”, you mumbled as he drew closer, there was no where else to run now, because he had his arms on either side and a mischievous rumble in his voice.
“You’ve been avoiding me, Briella.”, he tilted his head so he could maintain eye contact.
Your palms were sweating, your heart was beating faster than it should, your knees felt weak and some part of you wanted to pull him in closer.
You wanted to deny it so as you thought of an excuse, you opened your mouth to say it but he placed his hand over your lips again. Hearing the sound of the Principal’s heels coming closer again. This felt like a secret mission, that for the first time since setting foot here, you felt the rush of adrenaline. The space was getting a little stuffy as you breathed in sync with him. His eyes finding yours again as you both waited, afraid she was going to open the door and discover you two here, huddled together in a rather compromising exchange.
But the fear turned into a thrill as he grinned and you knew, that there was no use fighting this. He was going to take residence in your mind once again.
can u talk a bit more about working as a bibliographer? like what does that actually entail?
so the bibliography i worked at was affiliated with the major academic professional society of my subfield, and the society sponsors the bibliography as a kind of sister publication to their journal. this means 1) we were almost exclusively grant-funded, and 2) the staff positions at the bibliography go to grad students. there are jobs in bibliography and related information sciences that are not exclusive to academics/grad students, but i can't really tell you anything about them personally; i had this job as a graduate research assistant (ie this was what i did to get my paycheck for two years instead of TAing).
anyway the purpose of a bibliography like this that's affiliated with a journal or subfield is usually to aggregate data on what's published in that journal or subfield. ours was aimed at capturing the whole subfield. so, the bulk of the staff job is to comb through recent academic publications (journal articles & books) and pull anything that's topically relevant. we add the abstract and metadata to the bibliography (meaning basically a searchable database) and then we do subject tagging. this is the most fun part because you have to think about how knowledge is categorised and what's most useful to a user and whatnot.
so like let's say i'm entering an article from the journal of the history of psychiatry. i already pulled the metadata from the online journal listing and put it through zotero, which then talks to the bibliography's back end. i do the authority control (link it with the author's other publications in our bibliography, and with some external identity profile like viaf or orcid). i link it to the journal in our database and make sure it has the right date, page numbers, etc. this article is about philippe pinel, so its main category tag is probably 'psychiatry - 19th century'. then i aim for 5–10 additional subject tags, maybe 'france, metropolitan', 'psychiatric hospitals and institutions', 'therapy and therapeutic methods', 'philosophy of medicine', 'nosology and diagnosis', 'pitié-salpetrière hospice', etc.
once this is all entered, the article is searchable by any of its metadata, by going to the author's profile in our database, or by those subject and category tags. institutions (universities, libraries, hospitals, etc) all have their own authority controls too. you can browse the database by data, by subject tag, by searching keywords, etc; it also has a few visualisation tools that show strongly associated subject tags, histograms of a person's or publisher's history of publication, etc. this all means that things are more easily discoverable than they might be, and once you've found them you can also browse related things easily, or look at some provisional info on the state of publications in the field.
because this bibliography was affiliated with a journal, we also used to publish a yearly print edition with the entries published in the last year (this was satisfying to hold but honestly way less functional than the online database version lol) and we also published a special edition of bibliographic / historiographic essays on pandemics that i worked as managing editor for. idk how common this would be at other kinds of bibliographic job positions; we used the same publisher as the sister journal, so mostly all i had to do was correspond with people and deal with typesetting. anyway once that was published we also added those articles to the bibliography itself too.
anyway super fun job tbh, like a lot of it is data entry but haggling over subject tags was honestly enjoyable if you like that kind of thing. i lost the battle to add "total institutions" as a subject tag but won when i said we needed to revamp our system for entries dealing with weight management; as a result those subject tags are now clearer and more useful, and capture scientific discourses about both 'underweight' and 'overweight'. our best tag imo was "controversies and disputes", which was like a catch-all for any time there was some kind of haterism in the literature. it kind of changed how i view knowledge categorisation (like, the process; philosophy-of) and because we spent so much time reading abstracts to tag them, we would basically have walking encyclopedic knowledge of recent publishing in the field.
some of this functionality can ofc be replicated in library catalogues or google scholar or whatever, but the real value-add is the subject tagging and the relationships between those terms; this is where the bibliography is useful both for finding things and for showing an additional layer of information about the field and publishing in it. lots of academic fields have some equivalent of this, although i will say that our database was generally better (in the sense of more data and useful detail) than others i've used; it was a well-funded project run by a very dedicated prof who's been doing this for over 20 years now, and that continuity and institutional memory is really paying off for it.
but yeah if this is generally something that interests you, like i said, this is really just one specific form of bibliographic work. definitely look into what else is out there (i dunno how much of this would require a degree like an mlis even) and see what you think :)
Okay I need to talk about the River Song box set Last Words, and especially about how it ends.
So, the conceit of Last Words is that the Earth is going to die. Solar flares are going to rip the Earth apart in a matter of weeks. This isn't a manmade crisis - there's no recrimination. This is just an inevitability.
And Earth has lost contact with its colonies. They're on their own. (If I may add a headcanon, I believe this is because of the Great Catastrophe from the Dalek Empire series - the Daleks conquered the human empire, and were defeated by a pulse being sent through all Daleks causing them to destruct - taking out all the Daleks, but also most of the structure and technology of the conquered Earth Empire, too.) So there's no rescue. No large-scale evacuation. Nothing. Some people are retreating to underground bunkers, but everyone basically knows they're not going to work. A company called Lotophage has created a VR simulation where people can live out their last few weeks with their loved ones however they want.
And in the middle of this, a businessman named Garrison Clay manages to connect to the Library, and rips River from it into a clone body after about a thousand years of being there. He has a task for her: find a missing scientist. She has six weeks until the clone body dies, but if she can find the scientist, he will transfer her mind back to the Library. He gives her her diary and screwdriver, recovered from the Library, as well as a data sphere and access to Harmony, a worldwide computer network. River is not happy about being separated from her family in the library, but she can't really do anything other than what Clay wants.
And so River ends up travelling the world while it falls apart. There a lot of different characters she meets and we see how the whole world is reacting to everything falling apart. And in the end…
well. Spoilers.
It turns out that the missing scientist was one of the people who was helping to get Nerva Beacon online as an arc (this story is very much a prequel to The Arc in Space, and actually shares a few characters). Clay is trying to sabotage the Arc, because he wants to inherit the Earth with no one left to compete with him.
River has made friends with one Samuel Avner, and they manage to outmaneuver Clay's agents. The primary power source for Nerva's launch is sabotaged, but River and Clay manage to activate a backup power source and Nerva is safely launched and maneuvered past the danger zone. But River's body is falling apart, Sam has been shot, they both have radiation poisoning, and the Earth has mere minutes before the flares hit. River and Sam are left just trying to make each other comfortable before the end. River has the device that can return her to the library, but she refuses to leave without Sam.
And then… well. I'm gonna type this all out, I think. I highly recommend listening to it (I'd upload the audio itself here if I had any idea how to do that). But I want everyone to experience this.
[scene - power bays] Harmony (over loudspeakers): Professor Song, may I remind you that the Library return portal is still awaiting your re-upload? River: I'm not leaving him, Harmony. Sam: Take it, River. Go home. River: It's not what my husband would have done. Harmony: Professor. River. River: Harmony. Harmony: Come home, River. Come home. River: Harmony? Harmony: I am the Library return system. And you, River Song, are overdue. River: Overdue? Wait a second, it's you. Chasburgoh, the refuse chute, getting us out of our cell. You've been my guardian angel all along, haven't you? Why? Harmony: If you suddenly up and disappear, River Song, do you really think your family won't send me looking for you? You're wanted home, Professor. River: Oh. I love them, too. Sam: Then go, while you still can. Think of them, think of your husband. It's what he would have wanted. River: Oh but - it's not what he would have done. My husband wouldn't leave you behind. My husband would have waved his magic wand and… Sam: River? River: …and saved everyone. [gets up] Harmony? Where's my sonic screwdriver? Harmony: Your confiscated sonic device is in Lazar's quarters. Level four. River: And I'm all out of shape, too. Ugh, I wish this return portal was lighter. Urrrrgh! Sam: River! River, what are you doing? River: Don't worry! I've got a plan! [runs off with return portal]
[scene change - Lazar's quarters] River: Come on, come on. If I was a screwdriver, where would I be? Yes! Harmony? Uh, Librarian? Can you hear me? Harmony: We can hear you, River. River: Okay. This is a really big ask. But here's what we're going to try. Harmony, you're going to use this station's simulator system to-to patch us into the Lotophage platform. Can you do that? Harmony: I can do my best. River: And your best is brilliant! As for you and me, Librarian, we're going to boost this return portal's power by, oh, uh, I'd say about… half a billion times? We're going to try to upload every Lotophage user on Earth to the Library. We can't save everyone left on Earth, but we must be able to save some! Harmony: It's possible, River, but even with this base's waveform projection system, the portal can't channel that many dataforms. River: Well, that's where this little bit of Time Lord magic comes in. It was a gift, you know! From my husband! [wires the screwdriver into the return portal] How's that helping your bandwidth? Harmony: Catalogue returns portal capacity increasing. River: Good girl! Harmony, how are we getting on? Harmony: Access granted, but terminal solar event imminent. River: Oh, we'd better hurry. Put me through to Lotophage.
[scene change - Lotophage hq] Tech one: This place is finally breaking up, gov! Tech two: At least it will be over quick. River (over comms): Hear me! Hear me! Tech two: What the - who the hell's that? River: This is a message to all Lotophage staff and users not currently plugged into the platform. Get yourselves inside the simulation and prepare to be uploaded to safety! I repeat, get yourselves inside the simulation and prepare to be uploaded to safety! This is not a drill! Tech two: This has got to be a joke! Tech one: That's not what the readouts are saying - look! All dataforms are being transferred! Where are they going? Tech two: You know what? Never question a miracle. [opens comms] Attention all samaritan shift com-techs. Get yourselves plugged into your sim stations. I repeat, all samaritan shift com-techs to your sim stations, now! [closes comms] Come on. Let's go save our lives.
[scene change - Lazar's quarters] River: Harmony. Well, is it working? Harmony: Lotophage platform upload in progress. One billion, nine hundred million saved, and counting. River: Oh, that's what I like to hear. Keep it up! Harmony: However, Samuel Avner's vital signs are fading. River: Sam. [runs off]
[scene change - power bays] River: Sam! Sam: [moans in pain] River: Sam! Stay with me! I'm here. Sam. Harmony: Lotophage platform upload in progress. Four billion, two hundred million saved, and counting. River: Don't worry, we'll be out of here in a second, too, I promise you. I swear. Harmony, activate virtual simulation and commence our uploads too. Samuel Avner and River Song. Harmony: I am having difficulty, River. River: Harmony? Just two more? Please? Harmony: Upload commencing. Upload error. Error. Error. River: Harmony? Commence our uploads! Samuel Avner and River Song! Now! [gasps] No! Sam: It's okay. It's okay. River: I'm sorry, Sam. It looks like we really are the last unicorns. Sam: You tried, River. That's good enough for me! Not a bad way to go, holding hands with a friend. [sounds of the building beginning to break up as the flares hit] River: I'm sorry, Sam. Sam: Over four billion saved and counting. Your husband would have been proud. River: You know, I think he would have been. You close your eyes- Harmony: Upload. Upload commencing. Samuel Avner and River Song. River: Hold on, Sam. Hold on! Harmony: Upload commencing. River: What? Oh please, yes! Thank you! Thank you! Sam: What's happening, River? Are we dying? River: Oh, this isn't death, Sam, I promise you! As a matter of fact, I think we're about to join a library!
I… this is the essence of Doctor Who to me. Hope in the face of an impossible problem. Going out fighting with the hope of living for another day. Love for your family. Love for your friends.
Last Words did not need to do this. It had its happy ending in the launch of Nerva. We know right from the start that the Earth is doomed. We know what happens next. We've seen the Arc in Space.
But instead we got this moment. We get a moment of hope.
This entire sequence brought me to tears when I first listened to it on Monday. I… I just can't. This is about hope. Last Words, and especially its last scene is about hope in the face of hopelessness. Hope when all is lost. Because sometimes, hope really does prevail, even at the end of the world.
I'm guessing that as a graduate student you have read a zillion and one documents and books and papers and things in your field. Would it be outrageous to ask for recommendations/your favorites? I'm really interested in learning more about the history of Native land use and food systems in the midwest (which I suppose is a very long history, I'd be happy learning about any time period), prairie ecology, and the current outlook for native plants and pollinators (and conservation recommendations). Even one recc for each would be amazing. Feel free to postpone this ask if you're too busy! P.S. can't wait to read your dissertation.
This is a big ask, and I get a lot of these types of asks! In the future it'd be nice if people were more specific about their interests and not asking about general, huge topics. There's a level that you can and should be googling yourself! Many academic papers are online for free through sites like academia.edu and I'm not a search engine!
General answer if you're interested in this range of topics is Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass. She comes from the midwest and writes some on prairie and the book is all about Indigenous science stewardship.
Otherwise, the topics you're asking for don't have one single source that will tell you everything you're looking for. People make small studies of one community, one ecosystem, one plant. Whether it's ecology or ethnobotany, there's no one making compendiums of info, especially not in the midwest. That's why I do the work I do, but even what I do is imperfect. Be suspicious of anyone who/any text that claims to be comprehensive on a huge, complex subjects; they probably are bsing you.
Indigenous Land Mgmt:
Two good recent papers:
The subject of indigenous wild management is more intensely covered in California (M. Kat Anderson) and Vancouver (Nancy J. Turner). Those two authors are great for both nuts and bolts chat and philosophical perspectives about how people have lived in and altered and restored their ecosystems.
A compelling academic book on the subject is Roots of Our Renewal: Ethnobotany and Cherokee Environmental Governance by Clint Carroll, which is just as much about philosophy, knowledge production and protection and community building, as plants.
Prairie Conservation Practices:
Like I said above, currently published stuff is about very specific interactions and focuses, like a particular pollinator group in a particular plant. What you're looking for, a generalist summary of the field, doesn't really exist.
If you're looking for plant lists and how-tos Tallgrass Restoration Handbook or the Tallgrass Prairie Center Guide. Do not go for Ben Voigt. If you're looking for a general conceptual entry to Midwest conservation/restoration, there's Ecological Restoration in the Midwest
If you're looking for general recommendations for free, Xerces.org is the resource for bee-friendly landscaping and planting.
If you live near a University or Arboretum or Botanic Garden, this is the kind of thing where you should just browse the shelves near the books I've recommended! Chances are you have free access to the libraries, if not the ability to check the books out yourself!
As a public librarian whose own library’s marketing is, not to put too fine a point on it, garbâge, I have to ask: How did y’all manage to get a tumblr account?? Our communications dept would *never* let us be that cool.
It went kind of like 'Hey. We should do more reader's advisory. It's great social media *checks notes* uh, content. Should be a blog since it's long form writing. No, I can manage it, it fits in my task list. Have you heard of Tumblr? No? Well it would be perfect, and it's free. Approved? Greatthanksbye!'
And then I ran and they haven't caught me yet.
Much longer answer under the cut, in case you're looking for tips to convince coms ⬇️
I'm the person who manages all of our online marketing, so I really only had to ask the director. The words "I'll manage it myself, no additional staff time" were also magical since... well, I'm the social media manager, they know I'm good for it (and that I'm not going to post something the library is going to have to make an embarrassed press release about later.)
The way I made the case for tumblr was by saying it's a spot to host staff recs/reviews that's not character limited, and we can link back to it from all of our other social media platforms. Our website isn't set up for blog-style posts so making a new page every time we wanted to rec a book would be hugely obnoxious. Plus tumblr's tagging system aids in discovery (you know, in theory) in a way our website couldn't.
Even if our book rec posts don't get many notes here on tumblr (they don't, with a few exceptions) posts with links back to tumblr do pretty well on our other platforms. So our benchmarking for tumblr doesn't look great on its own but it does improve our stats elsewhere, so it's worth keeping on - especially since the overhead on staff time is very low. Staff send in their book recs and reviews when they have something to say and a little time to write it up, no strict schedule or deadlines. I take care of all the formatting, proofreading, graphics, scheduling, and tagging myself.
Obviously we're doing more than just our rec posts - reblogging and answering asks and replying to posts where relevant, plus the occasional one-off non-book-rec post. Which is all, you know. Just being on tumblr. Gotta do our bit to keep the tumblr ecosystem healthy. If you want to convince a marketing department that's worthwhile, then it's raising brand awareness.
(Plus I really like tumblr and keeping the social media manager happy when she has to spend eight hours a day looking at the kind of nonsense people say to libraries on Facebook other social media sites is worth its weight in gold, though I may be biased. But getting to manage the tumblr at work is sort of like an oasis in my day.)
And then sometimes Neil Gaiman reblogs an addition we made on his post and suddenly everyone at work is very excited that someone has kept up the tumblr for all these years :D
reading that Tarantulas and Prowl processor overload ask has revived one of my recently dormant fetishes
(this is an expansion on the forced porn download ask actually, wasn't really done b4 sending)
Prowl's archives just being a massive database of miscellaneous data, which seems like a fully practical thing that he'd do for simulation work at first glance, but in truth, he just never deletes anything because he gets off to the feeling of being just sooooo full in places no physical sensation can reach.
He wasn't always like this, you see. Prowl used to maintain good software management habits. He'd defrag according to a strict schedule, used connection buffers often and cleared his processing queues before recharge. He would never think twice about netdiving into shady websites with nasty popups, let alone download anything from there. But eventually, as his processors develop at that exponential pace his handlers noticed upon bringing him online, Prowl got bolder.
Bold enough to make a slip up and plug into a corrupt mainframe, triggering that forced download and kickstarting his fetish for good. He barely remembers anything about that incident other than an overwhelming mental barrage of arousal. Sometimes Prowl wonders if his colleagues at the time knew just what was literally going through his head as he slumped over on the console, seizing in place as they frantically tried to disconnect him safely. Maybe they caught the scent of his overload under his panels, and chose not to say anything.
Prowl would of course say that he was perfectly fine after that incident, but he'd be haunted by that instance of utter bliss he'd felt when like 30 terrabytes of ERP chatlogs and erotic flashgames burned through his neural circuitry. Eventually, he'd start by visiting a library. Full of clean and safe data to indulge in. Then he started logging all non-confidential precinct data, like routine security footage that's get deleted anyways, and dispatch call recordings. Then he started downloading from legal websites, then onto not so legal ones.
He even has backup and extra hard drives stored in his office and habisuite in plain sight, since no one else but other archivists and data specialists would catch on to his kink in the first place. Every once in a while, he'd plug himself into all these units and just let all that data flood through him, his fans and cooling systems squealing in effort to keep up with the deluge of information forcing it's way through his staticy brain, reducing his overclocked cognitive units into jello as his RAM gets consumed by pure uncontrollable math.
He loves the feel of his mind being pounded by googols of nonsense, it makes him hornier than anything else. He'd save anything from the internet, books and numeric databases are his usual go tos; high definition media are a must, the more graphically and audially intensive the better; the most unoptimized and performance heavy video games, anything that would fill up his hungry battle computer until it's full to bursting and melting.
Sometimes when he feels extra naughty, he'd even fire up the various malware and viruses the Spec Ops team would bring back, on top of all the seedy ones he'd find online. He'd trigger them in his processor and lie back in his berth, finger his fluttering pussy and feel the malicious software start tearing through his brain as his battle computer instinctively fights back, making him feel soooo hot all over. And every time he overloads, it sweeps all of his progress, and the self cleaning protocols will just have to restart as he writhes helplessly in the dark of his room.
Software sanctity? Fuck that, he'd hit anything as long as it demolishes his brain and make him into a silly, messy, spasming horny mess. A real dataslut.
god this is so good. He's quite literally overloading his processor out. It's almost like an addiction. Of course, Prowl could stop any time he wants... he could, he just doesn't want to! After a while, pumping his head full of junk data and malicious viruses is the only way Prowl can even have a fulfilling orgasm. Being full of miscellaneous data is just not enough. It's a pleasant pressure in his constantly calculating brain, yes, but if he wants to cum, he needs something stronger. He'll keep frying his brain inside of his helm as long as he gets to feel that electrifying thrill of his battle computer struggling to deflect the attacks on his mainframe.
It feels like he's falling apart at the circuits, delicate wiring so hot that it's disintegrating into dust, and all he can do is frantically rub his soaking wet valve through it all, optics bright and staring off into space as his HUD floods with nonsense. All his senses are completely taken over by the foreign malware, all he knows is that he feels so good.
Honestly, I wonder what would happen if he got stuck like that. Just for a day or two. And someone had to find him in his apartment, face twisted in pure bliss as his frame keeps twitching even after countless hours of continuous overloads. Of course, Prowl's processor gets cleaned out after that, yet he can't help but want to repeat it... to feel so absolutely stuffed and overwhelmed with data that he's just a wet, helpless thing. To give up control and let his processor sink into endless pleasure.
But for now, he's got a morning shift at the precinct to finish.
What the fuck is happening? I scroll down your blog and see anon hate shit.
Good god.
For some people, social media is about the only thing left to bring some joy. I completely understand not wanting to talk politics on SM. We currently have elections here and trust me, all everyone talks about here is politics and the future of the country. Sometimes, social media is the only escape left. Meaning, just because people don’t talk politics here, doesn’t mean they don’t do so in real life.
And I gotta add, social media is not a good place to get news, get educated about politics etc. That’s what libraries, schools, and newspapers/sites are for. Should you learn more about the political system in your country. Yes. But I’m not gonna be upset if you don’t know. In fact, I’d rather you tell me “I don’t know enough about this subject to have an opinion or add to the conversation” than make up shit as you go.
So for the anon who said you sound uneducated, instead of judging people for not knowing and making yourself sound like a complete jackass, maybe share an article, a book title, a website where someone can start to learn. I’m assuming it was the same anon who sent all the other stuff. You preach “help your community”. Then help your online community! You seem to have the time.
Which leads me to the next thing. I can’t stand this guilt tripping shit some anons do. As if it’s a competition. “You struggle and you’re exhausted. Well I struggle and am exhausted too and still manage to do all the one million other things for the movements I’m involved in.”
Oh, so you admit that getting involved in a bunch of stuff outside your regular obligations is exhausting? You want others to suffer like you? It’s not a god damn honor badge. It’s not a competition. People have the right to protect their mental, physical, and emotional well being. People have a right to prioritize their family’s needs. If this means not being actively involved in community events (political or not), then so be it. And how do we know people aren’t doing their part? Not everyone boasts about their accomplishments, the way they help, etc. online. Some people prefer helping quietly.
Also, to suggest to spend lunch breaks on anything other than actually eating lunch and giving your brain a break is god damn evil. Constantly reading, hearing, watching news is not god damn healthy. This mentality of “if you’re not on 24 hours a day and involved with everything that happens around the world and helping all these causes, you’re a bad person” needs to stop. Healthcare workers and most service workers don’t get breaks long enough to eat, let alone call their local reps or whatever else was suggested.
Like some of this shit is so worrying. Some of these anons act like taking a break is a sin. Or someone not talking about politics means they don’t care. Like damn. As if one person spending thirty minutes on Tumblr would bring upon the apocalypse. Not to mention, anon/s, you’re on here, too. Maybe delete the app and do as you preach. Instead of being on here, get on the phone and call your rep.
Anyways,
I hope @mynameismckenziemae is having a good day. 💖
Luv you, girl.
Oh Vonny, this made me cry.
I just woke up and can’t think of anything other to say than thank you ❤️
You are the absolute sweetest friend. Luv ya too.
