Academic advice that you must remember while you follow the "aesthetic"
romanticising school and studies by using aesthetics (i.e. Dark academia, art academia, chaotic academia, etc) is really helpful for motivation, but there are many things you must keep inmind
★ Stop romanticism of insomnia. I mostly blame dark academia fanatics for this (not all, but most). in order to remember what you have studied properly as the brain absorbs the information you studied while your sleeping and it maintains a good mental health. Put an end to the "sleep is for the weak" mindset. Cause no sleep actually makes you weak.
Tumblr media
★ stop worrying about not having aesthetic notes with colourful pens, heading and doodles like you see in the "study with me videos". It doesn't matter how it looks, as long as you understand, that's the whole point of having notes in the first place. To study, it's not an assignment or project for you to spent hours switching between pens and markers.
Partly people are so deep focused on making everything look "aesthetic" and forget to study, which was supposed to be the main priority.
★ if you get a bad grade once in a while, don't get demotivated. Sometimes no matter how hard you study you won't get the result you want, it might sound cliché but all you can do is try again. No matter how good someone's grades are, these is always a moment where they get a low grade for wherever reason, instead of taking that as a cue to give up, take it as an opportunity to bounce back
(remember, some study hacks may work for some people but it won't work for everyone, so try to find a method that's best suitable for you)
★ Put you phone away when your studying, it's a huge distraction (wow mom was right) now, if your study materials are in your phone or you study through YouTube, then i suggest you turn off you notifications of social media apps (i.e YouTube, Instagram and even Tumblr)
Also not a study advice, but avoid using your phone when your eating, pls it's for you own good, and stop creating fake scenarios when you sleep, it's the reason you can't sleep dummy

habits i should try to avoid burnout 🍵
to varying degrees, every semester i burn out. this one may become the worst i've had in recent years if i'm not careful bc of the way i'm trying to pack my schedule. anxiety has been unexpectedly high this week and it's only week 1! 😖
🐢 self-care:
get 8-10 hours of sleep daily
daily exercise - enough to get me physically tired enough to sleep
meditate AND journal daily
give myself at least one day a week to chill (probably will be a "reset" day bc i can't just vegetable and expect my brain to not self-destruct. for now, let's try saturdays.)
more quality time with the people i love throughout the week
fresh air + sunlight when the weather isn't too inhospitable
no phone mornings (i quickly fell out of the habit but it did wonders for my mental health 😭)
🐰 time management:
set reasonable goals. don't kid yourself into thinking you can complete everything on a to-do list you doubt you can finish even half of - if you doubt, you're probably right.
take plenty of breaks throughout the day
don't procrastinate bc procrastination's consequences will definitely lead to burnout. on the days you just don't feel it, give yourself a reason to study that speaks to you. what is demotivating you? give yourself the encouragement you need to not give up.
vary the order in which you do things so your days feel like they have more variety (e.g. vary the order in which you work on different subjects every day)
study based on energy level (i.e. try to study high-energy subjects when you have high energy and low-energy subjects when you have low energy. stop for the day when you're just not there anymore, don't try to push it.) this doesn't have to be contradictory to the point above cuz i still have lots of choices for what to do and my energy sometimes fluctuates like crazy throughout a single day.

Random Study Tips
Tumblr media
Don't study for too long if you are not enjoying it.
Take short breaks after 20-30 minutes.
Don't study in the living room, bedroom, etc.
Study in a separate place dedicated to studying.
Don't try to memorize without understanding. Try to understand the concept first.
Don't always study alone. Studying in groups helps a lot.
Don't highlight text blindly. Highlighting doesn't help that much. It only indicates Recognization not Recollection of the topic.
Always take notes. Reviewing the notes after a short time helps a lot.
Always try to teach others what you have learned.
Teaching is the best way of learning. Teach your parents, siblings, friends or even a rubber duck (programmers will know the rubber duck method).
Sleep is so much important for pushing something into your long-term memory. Get at least 7-8 hours of sound sleep.
Try to use the SQ3R (survey, question, recite, read, review) method while studying.
Use Mnemonics. It's the best way to memorize facts.

Keep extra calculator batteries in your bag
Track how long you spend on each assignment/test
find "your" study spot. i cannot stress this enough. have a designated study spot.
Group studying is easier if you have a whiteboard. Preferably a lot of whiteboard.
Group studying isn't for everyone.
Keep extra calculator batteries in your bag
8am labs are worse than 8am lectures

Ways to actually start studying after procrastinating
Don't multi-task: Multitasking does not come in the form of making notes and watching Netflix, it can come in the form of switching between two or three subjects too many times then it is like washing a plate and watching a show. It barely makes any sense to me.
Batching: Batching is where you take your to-do list and batch similar tasks into groups and take a break in between these batches.
Do Not Use Pomodoro Technique: Don't use the Pomodoro Technique because you have fixed tasks (tasks that require a particular amount of time) and flexible tasks (tasks that might take up more time than fixed tasks).
Flashcards: These things are the gamer-changers. Flashcards can be used in subjects which have a lot of terms that you need to remember, such as biology, chemistry, etc.
Don't feel bad about modifying your to-do list: If you have your math homework and an exam due next week, and you don't feel like doing math then you could study for your exam. Its okay to modify your tasks according to your mood.
Bonus tip: If you have to revise a chapter, get a few blank pages and put it beside your textbook/notes. While reading your notes, write down points that you can't remember or think is important that you wanna recap later on. If you compile those papers up that could be your go-to revision booklet before your exams.

cheap and easy ways to romanticize your life ~it's about the little things~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ speak to yourself lovingly. you have the potential to be your best cheerleader because your mind is the only one you can read. when you find yourself feeling down bc of automatic negative thoughts, try to think of something about the situation that is genuinely good, however small it may feel. on a similar note, every night, try to come with at least 3 good things that happened or that you felt that day. they don't have to be big things. even just the absence of smth negative is a positive. (this is still taking sm practice after getting stuck in a pessimistic habit and struggling to keep myself accountable to change it, but it's so worth it, i promise. 🥲)
Tumblr media
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ start your day with music that puts you in the mood to...well, start your day. | personal favorites 🥰 morning coffee lofi • happy morning jazz • cozy jazz for when you don't want to think about anything
Tumblr media
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ get cozy. 🧣 hold something soft. 🧸 savor that texture, that comfort.
Tumblr media
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ forest bathing 🌲🥰 look out your window or better yet, step outside. breathe the air. get some sunlight. look at the sky. the clouds. trees. stars and moon. all the colors. all the shapes. listen for birdsong. the crunching of snow or grass under your feet. isn't it wonderful that we get to experience all this? when i'm feeling lonely and i step outside and look for any sign of nature, i realize just how much i'm not alone and there is good in the world.
Tumblr media
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ set up a nice ambience. there are many for free online that can sound as real and comforting as you want them to be for the days when indoors studying or what have you. study with me videos have literally tricked my brain into feeling like studying even if it's really just pseudo-external accountability (i can never wake up to watch them live lol).
Tumblr media
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ you are worth taking care of. so take care of yourself. start with smth really really small like leaving a glass of water by your bedside to drink first thing after waking up. then gradually add in slightly bigger things as you feel ready like taking care of your hair (literally did not know about proper washing technique until i watched this 😵) and skin (bare minimum: cleanser, sunscreen, and moisturizer), getting enough sleep, and exercising. "true self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from."

Time Blocking
Time-blocking: scheduling out EVERY PART of your day
What to time-block
Inflexible events (lectures, work shifts, appointments)
Routines (getting ready for school/work, getting ready to go to sleep, etc.)
Tasks (studying, homework, projects, chores, etc.)
How to time-block:
Get a calendar (preferably digital so it’s easily changeable.) I use a mix of Google Calendar and iCalendar.
Make separate calendars for separate parts of your life (personal, work, school.) I personally separate my classes as well because it’s easier.
Schedule all inflexible events first. Why? To see how you can balance and schedule your day around those times.
Schedule the time it takes to get to school/work. It helps you see how much time you have to do stuff that doesn’t require you to commute. (You can also study while commuting, but it can be harder if you have multiple transfers, or get easily car-sick. Also, public transit can be dangerous, so be careful.)
Schedule the tasks you need to do. Homework, studying, laundry, cleaning. Estimate the time you think it takes to do those things. If you have ADHD, you should probably multiply that time to 2 (or 3), because you will most likely get distracted and not finish it in time (instead of 15 minutes, it’s probably 30 minutes.)
All short individual tasks like taking out garbage and folding laundry, you should group those short tasks together in one block and just make a to-do list.

Habits I picked up because of school that I keep up with (on my semester break)
Waking up early- I find that, with few exceptions, I wake up before 8:30am every day.
Study groups- okay I’m stretching the definition here, but I have productivity days at coffee shops with my friends, where I work on job applications, blog posts (hehe I’m writing this one from the coffee shop), or work on hobbies (mostly crochet and embroidery).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notion schedules-I used to keep weekly and daily schedules on notion to track schoolwork, but I now use them to track my work schedule and hangout dates with my friends
Always keeping lists/notebooks around- I am rarely without a notebook in arms reach. I have a notebook in my bag and by my bedside. I keep sticky notes in my apron at work so I can write things down and add them to my notebooks. I used them as a type of bullet journal but with none of the structure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I still study- I just now have full control on what I study. For example, I plan on teaching myself the Dewey decimal system soon. (And picking up some asl)
Digital art- what started as doodling in the margins of my digital notebooks has become a full-blown hobby of mine.
Visiting the library- honestly, I just find the library to be a very comforting place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Writing book reviews- while my book reviews for my blog posts are far less structured and formal, they only exist because I got used to writing them for school.
Reading nonfiction- I found through online classes that I enjoy reading textbooks and nonfiction work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Listening to audio books- I started listening to audio books back when was both full time student and working full time because I had no time to sit down with a book. Now its my preferred way to read.
Picking up hobbies- I am always looking for my next hobby to pick up. Last year I picked up painting and crafting. I also tried out wax seals and gardening (shout out to the two plants I haven’t killed yet).
What productive habits have you picked up?

stop procrastinating
Tumblr media
y'all i just went the whole day (mostly) w/o procrastination and now i feel accomplished enough to give some more anti-procrastination tips :)
stay organized ⋆ a visual timeline or planner helps you track what to do so you don't waste even a minute.
stay focused ⋆ think about why you even wanted to pursue this activity in the first place. if you're studying, think about the smartest kid in your class and how they're most likely studying while you procrastinate.
take breaks ⋆ realize that you can always come back and take a break later. don't forget to have fun.
be realistic ⋆ set SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals for your studies.
Tumblr media
gl to everyone out there. and get off tumblr and start studying ;)
