Start helping with citizen science projects

What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!

You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases

Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.

Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.

Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.

Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.

Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.

Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.

Americans have loved and relied on public, school, and academic libraries for generations. By eliminating the only federal agency dedicated to funding library services, the Trump Administration’s executive order is cutting off at the knees the most beloved and trusted of American institutions and the staff and services they offer, including early literacy development, summer reading programs for kids, high-speed internet access, employment assistance for job seekers, braille and talking books for people with visual impairments, and so much more.

What Can You Do?

As library lovers, your voice can make a difference. Here’s how you can help:

Contact your representatives in Congress and tell them to protect our libraries. Our elected officials need to hear why we value our libraries. Share a story of how your library as helped you, and let them know that federal funding is essential for your library to continue providing the essential services that support our communities. Tell them to protect funding for IMLS!

Show up for your library at library and school board meetings and town halls with your elected officials. Now is the time to raise our voices as loud as we can to protect libraries.

Become a supporter of the American Library Association. Your support helps us advocate on behalf of libraries and library workers everywhere and fight for library funding.

How To Support People

Sometimes, when someone is struggling, we default to giving or offering what support we would want in that specific situation. We don’t mean to, but it can cause harm to someone who we are trying to help.

So what can we do instead? I would ask people: “How can I support you?” But it was often too open-ended. My loved ones didn’t know what they needed.

Mental, emotional, and physical are support types that can be used to give personalized offers for support! Sometimes, people need specific offers of support, usually a mix of types.

On April 5 there's going to be thousands of protests nationwide

The point is to demonstrate dissatisfaction with the current administration, and to show that there isn't actually a mandate that the Trump administration says there is.

If you wanna join, click on the link below and scroll down to find the location here that's closest to you - there's protests in every state! If you can't physically go, see below the cut for other ways to help out. Whatever you do, share this around!

Monetary Options

Check if your local organizers have bail funds. As this is expressly a peaceful protest, they may or may not, but with how charged this country is politically, there might still be some arrests.

Donate to one of the partner organizations (found on the partners tab of the website). It takes money for them to support this initiative, so donations help to offset that and allows them to continue doing their work. Plus, many of them are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, so your donations may be tax deductable!

If local groups are organizing ridesharing, handing out masks/water, etc, donate to those funds, or help supply the materials directly.

Crosspost this information to other platforms that have more reach

If you're in some kind of activist or activist-adjascent community, let them know this is happening

Elected Official Outreach Options

Tomorrow (Friday April 4), call your representatives and senators in your state and federal government. If they're a Democrat, let them know that they have the support of the populace, but that we need them to keep making a stand (or to start taking a stand, as the situation may be). If they're a Republican, you can talk about how the Trump administration is ruining the party name, and that it is still their job to uphold the constitution. (As always, if you need help creating a script, send me/op an ask and I'll help you out.)

Tomorrow (Friday April 4), email your representatives and senators, with the same calls to action that are above.

How it works!

Click to donate cat litter will bring you to the Free Kibble website, and you get another click-to-give button. (Also, if you click the cat, she’ll meow! So that’s fun lol

Back to GG! The bottom left button opens a new tab for trivia to give! You just answer questions to give. I don’t know if it matters if you get the answer right or not on this one.

You’ll play 3 rounds for different causes, and I think they’re 10 questions each.

The bottom middle button brings up a video. You watch the video and answer questions about it, and then you can donate. If you do all 3, the value of your click will be doubled. I don’t do this one because I have no money, and we’re here to learn how to help for free!

And the bottom right button is for Games that Give. I used todo this one, but the ads are like a minute and a half now and it’s ridiculous. Obviously if you block them, your game won’t be counted under play to give. :/

You can do ALL of this once a day! (I think you can still play unlimited games, though I’m not sure if it gives every time.)

Anyway, I’ve been doing all of this for maybe 8 years now? They won’t send you emails or anything. (They might if you make an account but I’ve never done that!) Gaza Funds is a project that connects people to crowdfunding campaigns for individuals and families from Gaza. Each time the page is reloaded, a different campaign appears. While the rotation is randomized, campaigns for the sick/injured and campaigns close to meeting their goals are prioritized. We never want any of these campaigns to go stagnant, so we make sure to also prioritize fundraisers that haven't had a donation in a while. As existing fundraisers meet their goals, they will be replaced with other fundraisers that need our help.

We are a global team of (mostly) Arab and Palestinian engineers, students, writers, and academics working to help get exposure and traction to fundraisers created for people in Gaza, Palestine.
