I’m fascinated by horror and for me, I feel like I’m drawn to it because of all these things. However my main reason is probably because I relate to it or find it oddly comforting in a way—and no, I can’t elaborate unfortunately. I do not know why the Horrors™️ give me the warm fuzzies

reading this article about how climate change denialism is a way to express a hypermasculine anxiety to protect the continued western usage of fossil fuels, a “petro-masculinity” tied to the violent act of burning oil and gas as an expression of USAmerican sovereignty
#authoritarian personality name drop also hell yeah#actually this psychology section is probably gonna be cringe. this author does not define authoritarian which is very annoying#limited postcolonial analysis also. still pretty interesting#i think you can extend this to like death drive desires if you wanted to be very psychological about it#like the car is contingent upon a fuel that will cook us all to death. and westerners dont want to give that up. much to consider!#still reading so hopefully im not just repeating whats in the article#book club

Hegel's overriding impulse was to comprehend all dimensions of existence as dialectically integrated in one unitary whole. In Hegel's view, all human thought and all reality is pervaded by contradiction, which alone makes possible the development of higher states of consciousness and higher states of being. Each phase of being contains within itself a self-contradiction, and it is this that serves as the motor of its movement to a higher and more complete phase. Through a continuing dialectical process of opposition and synthesis, the world is always in the process of completing itself. Whereas for most of the history of Western philosophy from Aristotle onward, the defining essence of opposites was that they were logically contradictory and mutually exclusive, for Hegel all opposites are logically necessary and mutually implicated elements in a larger truth. Truth is thus radically paradoxical.

As a highly spiritual person who keeps learning how much they do not yet know, I want to write yet another hot take.
The “law of manifestation” I hear from Western esotericism and other magical practices…. is not actually magic.
It is extreme awareness of your alignment with yourself and what you want or don't want.
Awareness, attunement, whatever you want to call it.
It is embracing the chaos within you and finally making sense of it. You do not know what will happen. You are not in control, but you still take action with free will and intent.
It is not a feeling. It is not a spark. It is not something you've always known.
It’s not your greatest desire, necessarily.
It is a quiet hum that's always there - the one you can't silence but one that never bothers you. The one that you can drown out so easily. The one you wish you could decipher, even though, it says you already have.
It’s there even when you despair.
It's there when you're overcome with pleasure and happiness.
It is there with every rejection, every acceptance, every success, everything that you cannot control, everything that goes right -
and it tells you,
consistently
firmly
neutrally
who you are at any given moment, without judgment.
—
You know what? Fuck it. My hottest take of them all? On top of this one?
I think EVERYTHING is magic.
Even the most mundane. Like the dust that settles upon the pile of untouched papers.
And the catastrophic. The dying. The filthy rich. Climate change. Tears cried from a great movie. The euphoria of a love before it inevitably ends. The love that never does end.
Even the shattered glass that I haven't cleaned up for weeks and the disdain I felt from so many—my grief and my anger.
Even my helplessness.
And all the things that have led me here—I am still breathing and okay… doing better than I thought I could.
So.
Maybe it is magic after all.

Originally published in 1960.
"It is rather that even a theoretical knowledge of other cultures helps up to understand our own, because we can attain some clarity and objectivity about our own social institutions by comparing them with others."
"When a psychiatrist asked a Zen master how he dealt with neurotic people he replied, 'I trap them!' 'And just how do you trap them?' 'I get them where they can't ask any more questions!'"
"The individual no more acts upon the world than the world upon the individual. The cause and effect turn out to be integral parts of the same event."
"Would it really do to find out that our game is not serious, that enemies are friends, and that the good thrives on the evil? Society as we know it seems to be a tacit conspiracy to keep this hushed up for fear that the contest will otherwise cease. ... Imagine how the Christian conscience would react to the idea that, behind the scenes, God and the Devil were the closest friends but had taken opposite sides in order to stage a great cosmic game."
"Opposites and differences have something between them, like the two faces of a coin; they do not meet as total strangers. When this relativity of things is seen very strongly, its appropriate affect is love rather than hate or fear."
"...in Buddhism liberation is called awakening (bodhi) just because it is release from social hypnosis."
"The philosophy of wu-wei or noninterference implies ... that people must accept themselves as they are. This will disturb the social order far less than splitting themselves apart to strive after impossible ideals."
"It is, however, possible to see that his comparative [societal] 'rat race' need not be taken seriously, or rather, that if we are to persist in it at all it must not be taken seriously unless 'nervous breakdowns' are to become as common as colds."
"The difficulty of Zen is the almost overwhelming problem of getting anyone to see that life-and-death is not a problem."
"The disturbed individual is not so much the historical throwback in whom sufficient ego strength somehow failed to develop; he is the victim of too much ego, too much individual isolation."
"The Eastern ways direct their students to 'look within,' to find out the self, only to dispel the illusion that it is inside as distinct from outside."
"Not caring is the parody of serenity, just as worrying is the parody of concern."
"This is the loneliness of liberation, of no longer finding security by taking sides with the crowd, of no longer believing that the rules of the game are the laws of nature. It is thus that transcending the ego leads to great individuality."
"But to say, 'You must be spontaneous' is the flat contradiction at the root of every double-bind."
"At this point the patient simply stops pretending. He does not learn to 'be himself' as if that were something which one can do; he learns rather that there is nothing he can do not to be himself. But this is just another way of saying that he has ceased to identify himself with his ego, with the image of himself which society has forced upon him."
"The ways of liberation make it very clear that life is not going anywhere, because it is already there. In other words, it is playing, and those who do not play with it have simply missed the point."

[Note: Woolf wrote the below as one paragraph. Unfortunately this website’s formatting is incompatible with such repleteness.]
My aunt, Mary Beton, I must tell you, died by a fall from her horse when she was riding out to take the air in Bombay. The news of my legacy reached me one night about the same time that the act was passed that gave votes to women. A solicitor's letter fell into the post-box and when I opened it I found that she had left me five hundred pounds a year for ever. Of the two—the vote and the money—the money, I own, seemed infinitely the more important. Before that I had made my living by cadging odd jobs from newspapers, by reporting a donkey show here or a wedding there; I had earned a few pounds by addressing envelopes, reading to old ladies, making artificial flowers, teaching the alphabet to small children in a kindergarten. Such were the chief occupations that were open to women before 1918.
I need not, I am afraid, describe in any detail the hardness of the work, for you know perhaps women who have done it; nor the difficulty of living on the money when it was earned, for you may have tried. But what still remains with me as a worse infliction than either was the poison of fear and bitterness which those days bred in me. To begin with, always to be doing work that one did not wish to do, and to do it like a slave, flattering and fawning, not always necessarily perhaps, but it seemed necessary and the stakes were too great to run risks; and then the thought of that one gift which it was death to hide—a small one but dear to the possessor—perishing and with it my self, my soul,—all this became like a rust eating away the bloom of the spring, destroying the tree at its heart. However, as I say, my aunt died; and whenever I change a ten-shilling note a little of that rust and corrosion is rubbed off; fear and bitterness go. Indeed, I thought, slipping the silver into my purse, it is remarkable, remembering the bitterness of those days, what a change of temper a fixed income will bring about. No force in the world can take from me my five hundred pounds. Food, house and clothing are mine for ever. Therefore not merely do effort and labour cease, but also hatred and bitterness. I need not hate any man; he cannot hurt me. I need not flatter any man; he has nothing to give me. So imperceptibly I found myself adopting a new attitude towards the other half of the human race. It was absurd to blame any class or any sex, as a whole.
Great bodies of people are never responsible for what they do. They are driven by instincts which are not within their control. They too, the patriarchs, the professors, had endless difficulties, terrible drawbacks to contend with. Their education had been in some ways as faulty as my own. It had bred in them defects as great. True, they had money and power, but only at the cost of harbouring in their breasts an eagle, a vulture, for ever tearing the liver out and plucking at the lungs—the instinct for possession, the rage for acquisition which drives them to desire other people's fields and goods perpetually; to make frontiers and flags; battleships and poison gas; to offer up their own lives and their children's lives. Walk through the Admiralty Arch (I had reached that monument), or any other avenue given up to trophies and cannon, and reflect upon the kind of glory celebrated there. Or watch in the spring sunshine the stockbroker and the great barrister going indoors to make money and more money and more money when it is a fact that five hundred pounds a year will keep one alive in the sunshine. These are unpleasant instincts to harbour, I reflected. They are bred of the conditions of life; of the lack of civilisation, I thought, looking at the statue of the Duke of Cambridge, and in particular at the feathers in his cocked hat, with a fixity that they have scarcely ever received before.
And, as I realised these draw-backs, by degrees fear and bitterness modified themselves into pity and toleration; and then in a year or two, pity and toleration went, and the greatest release of all came, which is freedom to think of things in themselves. That building, for example, do I like it or not? Is that picture beautiful or not? Is that in my opinion a good book or a bad? Indeed my aunt's legacy unveiled the sky to me, and substituted for the large and imposing figure of a gentleman, which Milton recommended for my perpetual adoration, a view of the open sky.
-Virginia Woolf, ‘A Room of One’s Own’ in Alice S. Rossi, The Feminist Papers: From Adams to de Beauvoir

7th house in relationship astrology
7th house in astrology deals with one to one relationships , love partner , our mirror energy, our other self . And thus planets in this house direct us to integrate their energy more consciously in our lives so that we can enjoy true intimate happy fulfulling relationships with ourself and the beloved as well. 💕
Liz Greene, a well-known Jungian analyst, writer and astrologer has this to say about projection and falling in love .
Animus/anima can only be realized through a relation to a partner of the opposite sex, because only in such a relation do their projections become operative. Relationships which contain any element of falling in love inevitably contain animus/anima projections; and the curious feeling of familiarity one has about the loved one is only too explicable by the fact that one has, in actuality, fallen in love with oneself. This does not necessarily mean that such projections are harmful or negative. On the contrary, they are a necessary catalyst for relationship, just as relationship is a necessary catalyst for self-awareness - the quest for the inner partner is responsible for our embrace of life.
We shall explore it in our next post ⭐
