100 words
Thank you for the tag, @calaisreno and @lisbeth-kk
As an old drabble fan, this was a welcome challenge. Drabbling is so much fun, and excellent training.
I actually did two 100-word drabbles that hang together. I think you won't need any context for these ;-)
*-*
Sherlock. I was going to make a joke about this being your last chance to run away, but I think that would slightly mischaracterise why I’m doing this. We both spent so much time running away from each other. But that’s over. I’m doing this now because I know you don’t want to run anymore. I’m doing this because I trust you to stay. That’s what this is, what these rings are. A symbol of that trust. My vow to you today is simple. No more hiding. No more running. From this day, until my last. I’m here to stay.
John. I was so afraid of my heart for so long. I was afraid of the unreliability of emotion. I thought if I couldn’t rely on my own heart, I couldn’t rely on anyone else’s. But you… We’ve been through the wringer, you and I. And yet. You never stopped loving me. Even when you hated me, you loved me. I know that now. You taught me that if I can rely on your heart, I can rely on mine. My vow today is simple. I will always trust my heart, and I will always, always trust yours.
*-*
This was fun!
I'm not sure who has been tagged, but I'm tagging a few people anyway @keirgreeneyes @jrow @totallysilvergirl @thetimemoves @meetinginsamarra my dear wife and fellow drabble fan @nuttersinc and whoever else wants to do this.

A good character will be misunderstood by some of the viewers. Just like a real person.
Bestie you just have to be okay with it. You have to be cool with misinterpretation of the consumers part. You could put it in the simplest terms ever and someone will still murder your vision with crazy things I’ve read on this and many other apps. So write it good. Write it complex. Most of all just write it, you can fix mistakes later.

Child's Writing Exercises and Doodles, from Egypt, c. 1000-1200 CE: this was made by a child who was practicing Hebrew, creating doodles and scribbles on the page as they worked
Tumblr media
This writing fragment is nearly 1,000 years old, and it was made by a child who lived in Egypt during the Middle Ages. Several letters of the Hebrew alphabet are written on the page, probably as part of a writing exercise, but the child apparently got a little bored/distracted, as they also left a drawing of a camel (or possibly a person), a doodle that resembles a menorah, and an assortment of other scribbles on the page.
This is the work of a Jewish child from Fustat (Old Cairo), and it was preserved in the collection known as the Cairo Genizah Manuscripts. As the University of Cambridge Library explains:
For a thousand years, the Jewish community of Fustat placed their worn-out books and other writings in a storeroom (genizah) of the Ben Ezra Synagogue ... According to rabbinic law, once a holy book can no longer be used (because it is too old, or because its text is no longer relevant) it cannot be destroyed or casually discarded: texts containing the name of God should be buried or, if burial is not possible, placed in a genizah.
At least from the early 11th century, the Jews of Fustat ... reverently placed their old texts in the Genizah. Remarkably, however, they placed not only the expected religious works, such as Bibles, prayer books and compendia of Jewish law, but also what we would regard as secular works and everyday documents: shopping lists, marriage contracts, divorce deeds, pages from Arabic fables, works of Sufi and Shi'ite philosophy, medical books, magical amulets, business letters and accounts, and hundreds of letters: examples of practically every kind of written text produced by the Jewish communities of the Near East can now be found in the Genizah Collection, and it presents an unparalleled insight into the medieval Jewish world.

12 Writing Exercises to help develop your character and their voice.
Editors note - There's a lot of boring writers drivel. So, to spare you from the headache if you're not interested, your characters individual voices and personalities are important for engaging stories and interesting plots. You can skip down to the end for the exercises.
Think about the people you know, the people you love. What's one thing they have in common, besides the obvious? They're all uniquely different. Everyone in the world is different in some way, even in media. Books and movies all have unique sounding characters that are different from each other. In Harry Potter, for example, All of the characters have their own voice, even the Weasley twins are different in their own ways.
Complex and unique characters that sound different, interact and speak differently, make for engaging books and dynamics.
I don't know anybody who would want to read a 50,000 word novel about two boring characters, who're exactly alike, and talk in the same monotonous tone. You can have a character who is "boring." who speaks monotonously and still have an interesting novel that people would read.
Having different characters who come together to create funny, interesting, or weird dynamics makes for a readable piece. Take your monotonous character, by themselves, they're kind of boring. They're not engaging to follow. But, introducing different characters to come and interact with your "boring" character, creates funny and memorable dynamics.
Think the anime Saiki K, or Veronica Sawyer from Heathers. If you took only those two characters, and stripped away all of the background characters, they wouldn't make for very interesting stories. Saiki would be happy, living his days in peace and quiet. Veronica would just be a normal edgy high school girl. But if you bring the side characters back, you bring the story and their conflicts back. Saiki goes back to being annoyed by his weird and goofy friends, wishing for peace and quiet. Veronica goes back to being tormented by JD and the group dynamic in the Heathers clique.
These stories utilize background characters to create conflict in their main characters' lives, and makes fun and interesting stories and dynamics with them.
Without further ado, here are 12 exercises to help you develop your characters, and get you thinking.
Ask your character what they want, and have them monologue about it.
Think about who, in your life, does your character remind you of.
Ask yourself, What does my character want, and what does my character need? How do they conflict with each other, and how does this affect my story?
A good exercise to help you write characters interacting, and practice dialogue is to do the ABCD exercise.
The ABCD exercise is writing a full page, or 500 words, of dialogue between two characters, character a and character b, talking about what they think character c thinks of character d. Then, write another page depicting how character c actually interacts with character d.
Write journal entries from the pov of your character.
Think about your character's habits, nervous tics, or tells, and write out a page where they do those things.
Think about something your character holds dear to them, and give the item a backstory.
Think about how your character interacts with other characters, and write a page for each interaction.
Think about a belief or opinion your character has, and write a page of dialogue, where your character is explaining their belief, and why they believe in it, to another character.
Write a page about your character reminiscing, or talking, about a cherished memory from their past, or childhood.
Write a page of dialogue about character a telling character c about character b, whom c has never met before, what kind of things do they say? What do they think of b? Then write another page from character c’s point of view, what are they thinking? How do their thoughts of b change? What do they think of character a? How do they imagine character a and b’s relationship?
Write a page about a character being forced into a situation with their greatest fear. Then, if you want to go a step further, write a page of the same thing, but introduce another character that the first holds dear to them, or wants to protect.

I don't know if you've already been asked this, but what are some clever ways to describe a person's beauty in a sense that is more indirect. Instead of words like 'pretty, beautiful, alluring, shining, etc.'
Oh, I love this. The easiest way to show someone’s impact without describing them outright is to show how other people respond to them. Maybe...
Conversations softened when she entered the room, like the air itself had shifted to make space for her.
His presence was the kind that made people sit up straighter, like they wanted to match whatever energy he carried without even realizing it.
She had a way of making people lose track of their own sentences, blinking mid-thought like they had forgotten where they were going with it.
Or Instead of saying what they look like, describe what sticks in people’s minds afterward. Something like that...
Her voice stayed with you, low and slow, like a song you’d heard before but couldn’t place.
He smelled like rain on pavement, something sharp and clean and impossible to forget.
She had this way of looking at people, like she was already a few steps ahead in the conversation, waiting for them to catch up.
Maybe you want to drop something unexpected about them that makes the reader pause...
There was something reckless about his smile, like it had broken hearts before and would do it again without a second thought.
Her laughter didn’t just fill the room, it rearranged it, drawing people toward her like they didn’t even realize they were moving.
His face wasn’t the kind you described in features. It was in the way he existed, effortless and certain, like he’d never once questioned his place in the world.
Or through Movement...
She moved like she had time to spare, like the world had always been kind to her and she had no reason to rush.
His hands told a story when he talked, painting shapes in the air that made people watch even when they weren’t listening.
She didn’t walk. She arrived, like the moment had been waiting for her to catch up.
Or through Unintentional Impact... This is my personal favorite, describe the way a person changes the space around them.
People didn’t just look at him; they adjusted, leaning in without meaning to, like gravity had shifted in his direction.
She wasn’t loud, but somehow, silence belonged to her. When she spoke, it felt like the world quieted just to hear what she had to say.
He wasn’t the kind of person you noticed immediately. But once you did, he was impossible to ignore.
Let me know if you want more! I could go on for days with this. 😍

Oddly Specific Romance Prompts Vol. 1: Under Protection
"You're in danger. Please let me protect you."
"I'll be there at 9:20. Out front, in my car. Do not leave the building until then, understand?"
"If anything else happens, you call me immediately, okay?"
"You're under my protection, and that includes sustenance. What do you want to eat?"
"If anything ever happened to you, I don't know what I'd do. But it sure as hell wouldn't be anything good."
"I don't know what to do." "It's okay. I've got you, and you're safe."
"Would you feel safer if you slept with me tonight?"
"I'm going to get you out of here, but you need to hang onto me."
"Why are you so dead set on protecting me?" "I don't know. It's my job, it's what I was born to do, I might be slightly in love with you." "But--wait, what?"
"I'm not really used to this 'protection' thing." "Well, you better work on that. I'm not going anywhere any time soon."
"Am I allowed to be in love with the person protecting me?" "It's not standard, but it's definitely welcome."
"Stay here." "But--" "I don't want to hear it. You scared the shit out of me last time, and I'm not letting you do it again."
"You can't protect me from everything, [NAME]. This world is fucked." "You're right. But I sure as hell am going to try."
"Why are you here?" "You needed help. So I'm here to help you."

drunken confessions prompt list
when too much alcohol loosens their tongue
🌀 leaning heavily on your shoulder, they slur, “you have no idea how long i’ve wanted to kiss you,” and you freeze, unsure if they mean it or if it’s just the alcohol talking.
🌀 they’re giggling uncontrollably, cheeks flushed, when they suddenly blurt out, “you know, you’re the only person who makes me this happy.” the laughter fades, replaced by an earnest gaze that’s hard to dismiss.
🌀 stumbling over their words, they confess with a shy grin, “i think about you all the time.” their eyes widen like they didn’t mean to say that out loud, but there’s no taking it back now.
🌀 sitting together in the dim light of the bar, they lean in close and whisper, “i’ve been in love with you for ages.” you almost laugh it off, until you see the serious look in their eyes, even through the haze of alcohol.
🌀 drunkenly grabbing your hand and holding it against their chest, they mumble, “my heart always does this around you, you know.” you can feel the unsteady rhythm beneath your fingertips.
🌀 they’re rambling on about nothing in particular when, out of nowhere, they look at you and say, “i would give up anything just to see you smile every day.” it catches you so off guard that you don’t know how to respond.
🌀 as you’re helping them get home, they rest their head on your shoulder and murmur, “i’m not drunk enough to lie about loving you.” the words are soft and slurred, but the sincerity in their tone is unmistakable.
🌀 they keep repeating your name over and over, like they’re savoring the sound, before letting out a dreamy sigh and admitting, “i wish you knew how much i care.”
🌀 after a few too many drinks, they look at you with bleary eyes and say, “you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” there’s a hint of desperation in their voice, like they’ve been holding onto that truth for too long.
🌀 as they sway slightly on their feet, they confess, “i’d do anything for you.” you laugh and brush it off, but they shake their head stubbornly, grabbing your hand to make sure you’re listening.
🌀 they stumble closer, eyes half-lidded and voice soft, saying, “you’re the only person who’s ever made me feel like this.” their fingers graze your arm, like they need the contact to stay grounded.
🌀 leaning in a little too close, they confess with a shaky laugh, “i don’t want you to ever be with anyone else.” the words come out rushed, like they’ve been bottled up for far too long.
🌀 slurring slightly, they admit, “i thought i could get over you.” there’s a hint of sadness in their gaze as they meet your eyes, like they’re realizing the truth for the first time.
🌀 as they’re drifting off on the couch, they grab your hand and mumble, “promise me you’ll stay.” their grip tightens slightly, like they’re afraid you’ll let go if they don’t hold on.

one of their phones is dead and they can't reach each other
even though they had reservations, the restaurant is closed
one of them gets hurt on the date, which makes them end up in the ER
they met online without a proper picture of each other and they keep missing each other at the bar, not able to find out who their actual date is
the waiter was supposed to bring a dessert with an engagement ring to the table next to them but brings it to them and now the awkwardness has reached new heights
they are doing speed dating, but unfortunately they already know each person of the other sex that is there
a date on a boat is nice until a swan attacks and someone falls into the water
they are both not local and they keep getting lost
their boss/parents/friends are also on a date in the same restaurant
one of them gets called back into work for an emergency and their date insists to walk them there
they thought they would have a date with someone else and are confused by who actually shows up
