I'm new to Codywan. Doyou have a list of Must Reads or Fandom Classics or anything like that? (Bonus points for longfic!)

Funnily enough, I'm not sure I'm an expert on Fandom Classics, but I do think that the long Clone Wars rewrites/fix-its are a perfect way to start! (And then you can move on to shorter fics and crazy AUs haha) So these are all longer, and can be fit into TCW continuity, even if they diverge at some point because the writers can't help themselves and will fix canon (as they should).

Golden Shield of Brightness by NerJetii (@nerjetii)- Soulmate AU, your soulmates' (romantic and platonic) names are written on your wrists. "Only" 15k, but I would recommend it even if you're not a fan of soulmate AUs (=they don't fall into each other's arms just because they're soulmates). Focuses on Obi-Wan, mostly, but we also learn a bit about how the Kaminoans treated the clones.

I am teaching myself how to be free by tattooedgreenhouse (@gershwyndl) - this might be THE Clone Wars rewrite for me because the author has taken upon themselves to literally retell the whole series from Cody's AND Obi-Wan's POV. It's ambitious, I'm pretty sure it's technically canon compliant, but we do get our happy ending. Appropriately, it's 113k long.

i'll orbit your flickering star by sunskippa (@sunskippa) - Also a Clone Wars rewrite (by this I mean that it goes through the events of the series from Cody's POV), also canon compliant, 78k words. Might be my favourite ending in the genre, beautiful. I don't even know how to sell this, but it's a must-read imo

you read my mind, I'll read yours series by sospes - This is very much canon divergent. Starts off as a mission fic, Cody and Obi-Wan discover an artefact that creates a Force-bond between them. Misunderstandings ensue. Look at the tags/ratings, some of the works later on are spicier/angstier. But you could also read the first one and call it a day if those aren't your jam. (The whole thing is 166k long at the moment.)

will you be an anarchist with me? by a_alene (@birdiedoessw) - an outsider POV (Rex's) on Cody's and Obi-Wan's relationship. With the extra twist that they can't stand each other at the beginning of the war. This is something I would've loved to read when I was getting into codywan, it's a great way to start. (25k words)

shoulder the sky series by Night Fury (@shootingstarpilot) - Last but not least, an ongoing series (all but two works are finished, more than 200k words atm). You'll have to "get through" the first work to read the more codywan-focused fics (and I don't mean this in a bad way because the story is a m a z i n g. Just so you know.) To be honest, I think it might be a bit confusing to read at the moment because as far as I can see a work was removed from the series, but it's still up? I'm not sure what happened there, but I suppose you could simply read all the author's works in chronological order :D This series is pretty much Obi-Wan AND clone troopers focused and relies a lot on the Jedi Apprentice series (which isn't canon anymore) but you're gonna be fine if you haven't read it.

Kenobi is a hypocrite who berates Cody for sidestepping protocol, but flouts it himself at every opportunity. It's the Batman, almost indiscernible in the shadows, looming larger than life and looking very, very annoyed. As Jason and Tim watch, he pinches the bridge of his nose and says, “Jason Todd. I know you’re in there.”

Tim turns to Jason with wide, terrified eyes. “You were right. He is going to eat you.”

“I'm always right,” Jason says numbly. He grabs onto Tim’s arm. “Tim, what do I do?”

“Go out the way you came,” Tim says immediately. “Hide in the backyard. I'll tell him to go away and then I'll come back and get you.”

He’s very brave, Jason thinks with a sudden burst of fondness. If they both don’t get eaten, he’d like to be friends. He grips Tim by the shoulders and says, “Don’t die.”

Dick had...Dick had been so insistent on leaving. It made Jason feel a little unmoored. He hadn’t even been there at the manor that long. What had Dick seen that made him fuck off with Jason?

And he knew Dick had seen something. If not physically, he’d seen it in Bruce. Jason knew Dick Grayson probably could read the Batman better than anyone else alive.

“Why should I go with you?” Jason had asked him that night.

“We don’t put kids in harm’s way. I don’t know why he thought it was a good idea to start with you.”

You were a kid too, Jason wanted to say. But that wasn’t something you said to the Boy Wonder, the first protege, your older brother. 

Something had made it so Dick stopped being Robin. Jason got the feeling it was really a someone, based on Dick’s reaction the first time he saw him in costume. He didn’t ask. Dick didn’t tell.

Got a fic rec for careless to let it fall, and was not expecting a 400k+ fic?!?! So it's now bookmarked and subscribed to until semester end, cause I can already tell it's a binge fic. And then checked out your home page and you write hobbit fics?!?!?!?! My darling, my first love, you have made my day, and probably week if I'm honest. This is amazing news. Got any recs?

When you get to it, I hope you enjoy Careless To Let It Fall. It has been a true labour of love (and a lot more research than I want to admit to).

As for my Hobbit stuff? Thief's Quest is my personal favourite, but it's another long, 300k+ epic. It's a time travel fix it featuring female Nori as the time traveller, and Kili and female Bilbo (which if that isn't your jam, I get, it's just where my head was at when I was writing) as the catalysts which get her to put real effort into changing the past.

Or there's the Soul Stones Saga which started as a silly little fix it one shot ans expanded into 14 fairly short connected little stories.

On the Star Wars side of things, the Waterfall of Change series is just 4 fics long (+1 collection of outtakes) and plays into my absolute love of Mandalorian Obi-Wan.

My current favourite story is Will You Be An Anarchist With Me? By a_alene which is just the most glorious enemies to lovers Codywan story as told by Rex.

I am officially posting my rec list, because I was nicely asked for a few fic recs and I immediately made a fully formatted and meticulously vetted list of fics, complete with synopsises and word counts.

The thought process there was "Oh, I got a ton of fics. But wait I can't just give them a bunch of loose links, I need to title them! Might as well add the word count too, some people prefer longer fics. And also it's so annoying reading a improperly summarized fic and finding out halfway through it's not something you'd like, I'd better write a couple words to explain it..."

And so on and so forth. I truly got very sidetracked, I even reread entire fics to make sure they were as good as I remembered.

Anyway, all that aside, this is my (incomplete) personal list of recommended fics under the cut for the wider populous to enjoy. (All of these are gen btw!) :

Jason grapples with the fallout of the murders he's committed, Bruce is there to help him. (Honestly anything written by Lurker has peak Jason characterization, it was hard to choose one fic of theirs.)

Hi, sorry, this took me a minute :)

So, first off, there's some adorable art by @ccorthal depicting Cody as a dad to Rex, and fortunately, the artist has also written a fic called love hanging on. It's a one shot (~6k words) but it's absolutely adorable :)

Saint Valentine by Trixree (@trixree) is also a modern AU on the shorter side (6k). It's rated explicit, so parenting isn't really the main focus (which is Cody's one-night stand with Obi-Wan), but it is very much part of it. Rex is one of Cody's half-siblings he's raising.

Apart from this, however, I can't really recall fics in which Cody is Rex's dad. Although it could totally happen (especially in a modern AU), Rex and Cody are usually closest in age and their dynamic is more brotherly. And sometimes there's a kid, but the father figure is mainly Obi-Wan... That doesn't mean these fics don't exist, of course, so if anyone knows any, please don't hesitate to share!

Having said that, here are my suggestions involving other kids:

so I'll take the night shift by a_alene (@birdiedoessw) is an AU in which Cody is a bounty hunter post-Order 66, he finds Luke on Tatooine and takes him in, and Obi-Wan eventually catches up with them. Cody and Luke's relationship is gold, they have their own routine and everything. As a bonus, Cody is Force-sensitive, which might be a hit or miss. It's 30k long, there's some angst but it ends happily.

I stand here right beside you by Sarcastic_Writer (@morganwrites-starwars) ~40k long AU in which Darth Vader finds Luke when he's little and tasks Cody (still mostly under the chip's control) with raising him. There are some very sweet father-son moments between the two, some complications, but it ends happily.

a glimpse of what I call home by Sunfl0wer78 (@buckytheboss) a modern AU in which Cody is a sort of father figure to Boba. Boba is a teenager, so this one might be a bit of a stretch if you're more interested in kids specifically, but I really liked their dynamic. Boba's POV is very fun to read, but who can blame him when his older brother/father keeps being embarrassing... Overall, it's 27k long, really sweet and fluffy, oh and there's also dinboba in there.

I've decided to make notes, mostly for myself, of my favorite bat fics I've been reading and I thought I'd share my top tier, gold star sticker fics I've read so far. Yes, it's halfway through February. Good thing I took such good notes.

And Ra’s al Ghul. …And the Joker. 📖 My notes: This one genuinely made me laugh out loud, which puts it straight on my Reread When Sad list. Sad Tim Drake Hours ft. Jason getting protective of Tim, Tim getting protective of Damian, and Dick getting protective of everyone. He's very stressed and doing his best.

This one in particular just made me want to vomit feelings. It's sweet, sad, and funny. I got cuteness aggression reading it. I want to bundle Jason up in a hug and then put him in my pocket.

He doesn't expect to run into Met U student Jon Kent, and he definitely doesn't expect to get mistaken for Jon's boyfriend. But hey, what harm could it do to play along? This is going to get complicated fast. 📖 My notes: Listen. I'm a simple soul. Pick a ship, slap a fake dating tag on there, and I will read it. No one does fake dating like fic writers, and no one can do it better. Also, it's a college fic AND a case fic, need I say more.

Tim would know; that’s his life. Luckily, Tim is excellent at his self-appointed calling, and once he cracks Batman’s secret identity, he discovers an empty mansion next door to the Wayne estate. Some would consider squatting uncouth; Tim calls it free real estate. Anyway, the Drakes won't mind. They'd have to be in the country for that. Besides, a little identity theft never hurt anybody. 📖 My notes: Tim as a Crime Alley Urchin is, as you might imagine, completely feral, and I love it. He also has the kind of beef with Jason that's reminiscent of their early comic relationship, but funnier because Tim's pretending he isn't an Alley Kid. This one's another laugh-out-loud rec, and the series is incomplete with a currently ongoing sequel.

It definitely won't have a major impact on his life or anything. 📖 My notes: This one was actually a re-read for me, but a Jason Todd who never died in Ethiopia and a cute little stalker Tim Drake are all I could ever want so, I'm sure this won't be the last time I read this one again. Plus, Dick getting the chance to save Jason from exploding buildings ❤️

No, really. But the last Robin up and died, and now Batman is going crazy, and no one else is doing anything about it, so…Tim decides to become Robin. Still, Tim's not taking up the mantle until he can put a couple of things in order. Step one? Making sure the Joker can't get it into his head to kill another Robin. Not ever again. (Good thing Tim's not the one with a 'no killing' rule.) 📖 My notes: I'm always a fan of Tim leaning into his more unhinged tendencies, and this one did it beautifully. I had such fun with this flavor of psychotic Tim and was rooting for Jason and Dick to figure him out and then smother him with affection. Give this author an award they deserve it.

In another? There’s a time loop. In which Jason doesn’t die, Tim joins the family early, and Dick… well… Dick's just trying to figure out what's going on! 📖 My notes: I'm a time travel shenanigan slut, no matter the kind. In this one, Dick and Tim time travel together and we angst over trying to save Jason together.
