Look, this is what moral OCD is like for me:

I walk past a piece of paper. I don’t pick it up because I had a long day at work and it’s very cold outside. This then becomes my internal monologue:

I didn’t pick up that piece of paper, I should have. Don’t I care about the environment? It’s not my trash, I shouldn’t have to pick it up. But also that’s how these things happen right? We place the blame on others as our environment degrades. It was just a piece of paper, it’s not like it can do that much damage. But also how do I know: I’m not an environmental expert. Maybe stray paper scraps are killing the frogs. You’re literally killing the frogs. You should look up how many frogs die a year so you know how shitty you are-No stop it.

I care about the environment, and I recycle and I joined green activism movements but is that enough? I could be doing more. I should be doing more. I should donate my entire check to charity. But isn’t it self serving to think that my one check could help that much? Do I really think I’m that important, how self entitled and-no stop it, reset! You are obsessing and if you fall for it, you will not eat dinner. Let it go.

Okay it’s just a piece of paper. It’s okay you skipped it this once: it could have had something dangerous on it. Yeah that makes sense. But also, that means I’m putting my own safety over trying to help the environment, which is very selfish of me. I’m just one shitty person: god how could I be so self absorbed. well... if that's true, here's a lightner revived as a darkner. a darkner with all the memories, regrets, appearance, personality and goals as what qualifies as a "real person". here's tangible proof that darkners are as capable of personhood as lightners. if you think darkners don't matter, why can gerson exist in the first place? he's a character who blurs the lines between light and darkness. lightner and darkner. author and character, creator and created.

there's a reason deltarune has him dead and "buried" in the cemetery before the game even starts, next to snowdrake's mother and shyren's sister and the leader of the dogs. it's thematically tying him to the concept of the amalgamates. the medical horror plotline in undertale that's a subversion of the trope that dead things should stay dead and that abominations like them should be "put out of their misery". THEIR personhood and freedom and right to return home and be loved by their families in their unconventional state is at the heart of the True Lab.

when gerson asks susie what ending she has in mind and she replies "i wouldn't end it", he cackles with delight and tells her to hold onto that belief dearly when she writes the continuation of their story. his one wish, in life just as in death, was for the new generation to keep creating. he draws a doodle of the fun gang, hands it to susie, and she gives it back by drawing him into the story. in what world is the takeaway from all this that gerson should stay dead and will never return again.

Every ship is valid.

A ship that isn’t your thing is valid. A ship that gives you ewwww vibes is still valid. That one crack ship that only one person wrote about, posted on AO3, and has 23 views in four years—also valid.

What isn’t valid is spending more time hating a ship than enjoying your own—and ruining it for others with negativity. I don’t understand the point of putting more effort into tearing down a ship than its actual shippers do building it up. At this point, if that’s your thing, your OTP isn’t your OTP—it’s hating a ship, making sure the boat you don’t even like sinks.

Ship what you love. Ignore what you don’t. Write fanfics, make art, memes and moodboards, record podfics, make fan videos and craft, daydream up your headcanons. Whatever keeps your boat afloat, as long as it’s not ruining someone else’s fun.
