The HP Epilogue: JKR's trashfire ending to a trash book series
I was reading snippets from the epilogue for the first time and everything about the epilogue is just frustrating. And I want to share things I found intolerable about it to let off steam. These are MY opinions so if you feel differently, I am happy for you. But here is a summary of my gripes.
The names of the Hinny Harry's kids
James Sirius. Albus Severus. Lily Luna. I can empathize with wanting to honour people you love by naming your kids after them...but this is just overkill. Not one of Harry's kids has an original name. Not one! And I said Harry's kids because it seems like Ginny had absolutely no input in the names. If I am being generous, maybe the Luna name was hers, but given the naming pattern of the kids, I am sure that Luna references Lupin and not Luna Lovegood. Sometimes I feel as if Harry has a domineering vibe in Hinny and the kids' names are not doing any favours to combat that. Not surprising as everything about the Hinny romance was dictated by Harry's wants. Who cares about Ginny?
Muggleborne discrimination is bad but pureblood discrimination is A-ok
‘You’re right, sorry,’ said Ron, but unable to help himself, he added, ‘don’t get too friendly with him, though, Rosie. Granddad Weasley would never forgive you if you married a pure-blood.’
I could not believe my eyes when I read this. It's like Ron forgot that HIS family is pureblood! It's the same vibe as a black parent telling their black or mixed kid not to marry another black person! Luna is pureblood! Neville is pureblood! Do the Weasleys have some kind of self-hatred?? Another point to purebloods slowly dying out but who cares? As far as JKR is concerned, the wizards should be aiming to all be mutts with mixed blood :)
BTW the Scorpius/Rose pairing fills me with revulsion. I like Albus and Scorp as friends though! But not so much as lovers.
Marriage is the only way to be truly part of a family
‘Oh, it would be lovely if they got married!’ whispered Lily ecstatically. ‘Teddy would really be part of the family then!’
Got some heavy Hinny vibes from this line of dialogue. Harry did not become a true Weasley until he got with Ginny after all :)
I know Lily is a kid and she means no malice, but I truly felt disgust towards this line. It just bothers me, especially in the context of Hinny and how Ginny functions as a way for Harry to become a Weasley member. Teddy is Harry's godson, he should be like a big brother to Lily. How does becoming a cousin-in-law make him more of a family member compared to being her surrogate big bro??
Do Hogwarts alumni swear an oath of secrecy?
‘And you don’t want to believe everything he tells you about Hogwarts,’ Harry put in.
He had never told any of his children that before, and he saw the wonder in Albus’s face when he said it.
So James Sirius is telling Albus Severus exaggerated tales about Hogwarts similar to what the Weasley twins did to Ron. But how is this possible? Do the parents not talk about Hogwarts to their kids? If my kid was going to my alma mater, I would tell him/her all about the school when I went there. I don't understand why it seems like parents don't talk about Hogwarts. At least Draco's parents seem to talk to him about the school at least.
Muggle abuse is still funny Ha. Ha.
‘As a matter of fact, I did Confund him,’ Ron whispered to Harry, as together they lifted Albus’s trunk and owl on to the train. ‘I only forgot to look in the wing mirror, and let’s face it, I can use a Supersensory Charm for that.’
Remember that Ron is an Auror! A wizarding cop! But nah muggles are still lesser than wizards so even a guy like Ron who's supposed to be a good hero character feels no shame in messing with their autonomy. Ron is literally so disgusting in the epilogue. Never thought I would end HP finding Ron the least tolerable of the trio when Ron is usually my fav of the 3. Not that the bar is very high for the other two.
JKR really does not like Draco
His hair was receding somewhat, which emphasised the pointed chin.
Of course, JKR can't end the series without throwing more shade at Draco. He's rocking the middle-aged man look, only has one kid and has a love interest that we know squat about. And then in CC, Draco's wife dies! Sigh, I really hate Drastoria...
All is not well
There is still house discrimination. Magical creatures likely still have fewer rights. Aurors like Ron and everyday wizards abuse their powers against muggles. Purebloods are dying out. Wizards like Albus act like they did not grow up in a magical world, aka wizards still have low brain cell counts. But sure, Harry's scar is fine so ALL IS WELL!
I can't believe there are people out here calling JKR a good writer! I see the vast potential of the book series and I feel so sad sometimes. I am so happy that HP never existed in my childhood.

Sorry, but for me J.K didn't write good romances. We don't know Astoria, Rolf and Hannah. Lupin and Tonks appeared out of nowhere. Jily is undrinkable. Hinny has little or no development over 7 books even though they have really known each other since volume 2. Romione is really not great from my point of view. Don't even get me started on Dumbledor and Grindelwald...
Tumblr media
Bill & Fleur are the only ones, among the young characters, that I find cute and even then it's a very secondary couple. Honestly, Molly and Arthur are the only real Harry Potter goal couple in my eyes. And yet, they also haven't seen them much !

I think the most annoying thing about Drarry and Dramione is the way the ships sort of ruin Draco Malfoy’s character specifically, similar to how Jegulus ruins Regulus and James.
Draco Malfoy is genuinely a very interesting character to study, and we do actually know a lot about his childhood and motivations and capacity for love. The information we get however, is from The Cursed Child, and people largely ignore CC since it is genuinely a bit strange and poorly thought out. But the things it says about the characters is still very interesting, and I don’t think they are entirely mischaracterised in it, seeing as it is canon.
Draco Malfoy is supposed to be arrogant, and big-headed as a child. He’s supposed to be a jackass and a bit horrible. But he’s a kid. That’s the thing with his character, he’s a kid that’s been taught to be bigoted, and as he gets older he does start to question things. JKR really didn’t want people to like him, because he was actually based on boys she didn’t like at her school. But she did right him as a very compelling character.
Draco is the only Death-Eater where the “forced” narrative has any grounds to stand on, however I do prefer the interpretation that he simply didn’t know what he was getting into. Yes, his mothers life was on the line, but I think he would have joined regardless. His father would have spoken about how great and noble the Death-Eaters were, and he probably thought it would be more like the Inquisitorial Squad. But the pressure did get to him, and he at no point actually kills anyone as far as we know. The fact that he saves Harry twice also can’t be ignored, since it would imply that to some degree, he became aware that he was wrong.
Where does CC come into all of this? Well, in CC, even in the Dark Universe, he protects his family above all else. He has fully abandoned any ideals of blood supremacy by the plot of CC, and we get to see a lot of his change. Lucius and Narcissa canonically thought of Scorpius as a bastard because they disapproved so strongly of Astoria. Draco had to have had some redemption for that to make sense, especially since this dynamic was on Pottermore before CC was a thing. Draco states that he never wanted to be a Ministry man, he just wanted to be happy, which would imply he wasn’t happy as a child and had very little freedom. His capacity for love is also very interesting, since he was so in love with Astoria and cared more for Scorpius’ happiness than his own pride. He fully broke into the Potter’s house and started a duel with Harry because he wanted Scorpius to be happy.
All of this is to say, that Drarry and Dramione kind of ignore this. It often makes Lucius into a physically and verbally abusive father, rather than just a controlling one, and sort of makes Draco’s redemption all about love. He starts seeing the light even before he meets Astoria, and she was likely just the final push he needed to change completely. Even in CC though, Draco is still cold and calculating and aristocratic, he’s just less scared. And that makes sense, since he’s an adult.
I find Drarry and Dramione really speedrun his character development, and make it all about some crush he has on this one person, rather than something that happened slowly through life experience. Also, the idea that he was forced to be bigoted always bothered me, since he was just bigoted until he learnt better. Forced to be a DE? Fine, I’ll give it to you, his mothers life was on the line (even if I had a different interpretation). By the end of HP I’d argue he’s still ignorant and has a lot to learn, CC just seems to take place after he’s fully left supremacy behind. Which is, you know, almost two decades later so like, keep that in mind for how long it took him.
Draco is a complex and very interesting character, and it just annoys me how Drarry and Dramione denigrate his redemption to “this person was hot and I didn’t want to oppress them”. Draco, I would argue, is much more interesting when he’s not shipped with anyone, or when he’s only shipped way after he’s started improving.
Just my thoughts, Drarry and Dramione do also ruin Harry and Hermione (and Ron, Ginny and Astoria), but the way Draco’s character is treated is just much more noticeable. It’s one of those cases of “if you have to change everything about the character to tolerate them, do you even actually like the character?” Also the why Astoria gets treated bothers me, but that’s for a different conversation.

WHAT I THINK DRASTORIA WOULD BE LIKE ON THE HOGWARTS EXPRESS
Astorias delicate hands reached for the chocolate frog, but it quickly levitated in the air just as she reached for it. She got up from her seat and went for it, letting out a slight whine while extending her arms towards the treat, but it just got higher each time she became closer.
“Can you stop that?” Astoria asked politely too the chuckling fourth year in front of her.
“Say ‘please’ first,” Draco proposed.
Her voice was barely audible, “Please?” Just as she uttered that single word the chocolate dropped down in her hands. She gave a satisfied grin to the arrogant boy, smoothed out her Slytherin robes, and gave all her attention to the mouth-watering dessert.
“Good?” His voice was as sweet as the evening breeze of this September, which always made little Astoria gain the shivers as if she was a deep sea diver making her first plunge in the water.
Astoria rewarded Draco with a hum as she continued to eat the chocolate goodness, all the while Draco was sitting there, grinning at the second year, Astoria Greengrass.

My opinions on Draco Malfoy
Tumblr media
I think there was potential in Draco redemption arc, but I don’t think he was abused, or was “the boy with no choice” also the ships for him suck, I hate dramione with a burning passion(There are sooo many reasons why, it would take an entire post).
I don’t like Dron, I don’t like Drinny either but I prefer it to the former two ships, I read Drarry fanfiction, because most lgbt fics are Drarry so it’s hard to avoid them, but I do dislike the ship(btw, I don’t hate you if you ship Drarry, or any of the aforementioned ships, it’s just fandom, just because I dislike something doesn’t mean I hate you for loving it). That meaning said, I think Draco and Harry had crush’s on each other at hogwarts, but Draco grew out of it when Harry got Lucius arrested.
I’m also a big Drastoria shipper too, and low key hate the fact that barely anyone ships Draco with wife. I think they’re the only good thing to come out of cursed child, other than Scorbus. But those are just my thoughts

what other ships do you ship aside from bellamort?
Almost all the canon ones, to varying degrees: Belladolphus, Lucissa, Drastoria, Hinny, Romione, Grindeldore.
I have only ever written about the first three in fanfiction, however (aside from Bella x Voldemort, of course).
I enjoy reading both Jily and Snily but mostly in one-shots because I cannot bring myself to read multiple-chapter stories for these couples unless they are part of a bigger story.
You see, I tend to enjoy fanfics despite the romantic element, most of the time, and not because of it. I like to read stories about characters and their struggles, especially in the first wizarding war, and not ones that talk about how x and y fell in love. The only exception are probably Bellamort stories, and even then I'm very picky.
I don't ship it as much as I did, but my first OTP was Sirius x Bellatrix (i know, i know). I've also read and liked Severus x Narcissa, Rabastan x Andromeda (but there are no good ones around, unfortunately), and various combinations of those characters (with lots of drama and unrequited pining).
Also, I can read pretty much anything that is plausible and well-written, but I'm very quick to close fanfics if there are elements of them that I dislike. I find character bashing in general to be stupid and lazy writing, no matter which character it is. If you can't write a character, find a way to write him out of the story and leave it at that. Taking your anger out at fictional characters by treating them like Saw does with his victims has always puzzled me.
Also, if the ideas are good but the writing is horrible, I will close the story and read something else (although regrettably). I might stick around longer if the writing is amazing and the ideas are meh, but eventually, I'll get bored.
Something I can't stand is self!insert fanfictions and ones with "y/n" in them. They are usually horribly written and just straight-up porn, which would be fine on its own, except they are so cringy I can't look at them. They give me so much second-hand embarrassment.
Most of the fics I read are in my mother tongue (Italian) anyways. I don't have an account on English fanfic websites, so I mostly go there if I receive a link or if I'm looking for something specific that doesn't exist in the Italian fandom.

Scorpius keeps growing. Astoria makes sure he’s always ready for Hogwarts. Draco realises he’ll never be alone.
[ Drastoria | Angst and fluff. Loss and healing. Also features several bloodied fingers but fear not, they’re only minor sewing related injuries. | 2.5k words ]
First Year
Astoria sits by the window the afternoon they arrive back from Scorpius’s first uniform fitting. She can still hear him talking his dad’s ear off down the hallway. Draco had made the mistake of mentioning the staircase with the missing step and now Scorpius won’t rest until he knows all of Hogwart’s secrets apparently. She smiles as she reaches for the white thread and scissors. She picks up the first name tag, S. Malfoy, and she feels the same excitement running through her that’s been living in Scorpius for months. It feels like only yesterday when they were buying these same letters on little wooden blocks in his nursery. Now she’s placing them in school uniform. Time shouldn’t go by this fast. It hasn’t felt like enough. But her son’s excitement always stops her from wishing time to stop. He desperately wants to learn and live and she could never hold him back from that. So with a discussion about swamps in corridors as background noise, she starts sewing in the first label into his white shirt. With each one she finishes, she gently swipes her thumb across the name and just for a second, thinks of all the ways she loves him. It’s not a charm but she hopes he feels loved whenever he sees it. People may not like his name but it’s something he’ll wear with a different sort of pride than his father in his youth. That she’s certain and proud of. Finally, she adds an anti-itch charm to make sure the tag doesn’t irritate his skin before she folds the shirt and picks up the next one.
Second Year
If she thought he’d suddenly grown up the summer before his first year, it was even more pronounced the summer before his second. Once again, his new uniform arrived and this time Scorpius is lying on the rug by her window seat. He’s writing to his best friend, Albus Potter, and she ends up pricking her finger because she’s too busy watching the smile getting bigger and bigger on her son’s face as he writes. She quickly heals her finger and looks back down at her own work. She had been hoping to have fewer items to sew this year but when they went through his trunk to see what uniform still fit, she wasn’t surprised to find it nearly all needed replacing. She was surprised however to find a third Slytherin tie that had Albus P handwritten on the underside of it. Astoria made sure to owl it back to his mother the same morning, knowing how hard it was to keep track of one child’s school supplies, never mind three. She’d had a reply back just this afternoon with a thank you and a question as to whether Scorpius owns the fluffy grey socks with gold owls on that she’d found in Albus’s trunk. It took her a second to place them and then smiled to herself over the fact Scorpius must have added them to his trunk after they had finished packing together. She goes back to mentally planning out her reply as she sews the last shirt.
Third Year
The next summer she wasn’t in her window seat as she got out her sewing supplies. Instead she was in bed, a pile of white shirts and even longer school trousers in a neat pile by her side. The bed was too far away from the window for this task but luckily Scorpius jumped at the chance of using magic outside of school. His face was giddy with excitement as he cast lumos and held it up in front of her. The happiest he’d been all summer. She felt guilty at that. They had made a decision to shelter him from the world, but never from his family. Her condition was at its worse and he knew it. Not that they could hide it at this point even if they tried. Yet this morning she’d felt better than she had in months. So she sat up and requested her sewing kit. Draco had looked worried, even a simple stitch charm would likely be too much of a drain on her these days. But he knew better than to refuse her. And anyway, she didn’t need magic for this. Just love and a little patience. It was barely a minute later when Scorpius stuck his head around the door and offered his help. She knew it was Draco’s doing but she could never be mad. Every moment spent in their son’s company was a blessing. She thought back to the summer before his first year and remembered thinking how fast time seems to go by. It was nothing compared to this.
Scorpius was a little over two years old when he had his first bout of accidental magic. He’d been playing with his building blocks when she had told him it was bath time. He’d refused. He wanted to keep playing. It wasn’t until she’d started to pack the blocks away that she realised it was stuck to the floor. She tried to pick up another one and realised that one was stuck too. She shouted for Draco and then felt a little bad when she saw his panicked face as he ran through the door. But watching it change from anxious to elated as she explained still lives with her today. Little Scorpius had giggled away, tantrum and bath time long forgotten, as he watched his mum and dad try and pick up his now unmovable blocks. He thought it was a new game and their obvious joy didn’t show him otherwise.
She looks up as the needle pokes through and sees the same amusement in her son’s eyes today. She wants to keep that light there for as long as possible. So she asks him to tell her about what plans he has with Albus this year. She’d already signed his Hogsmeade permission slip and was wondering if he’d convinced Albus to get his signed yet. She knew he was desperate to visit Honeydukes but wouldn’t want to go without his friend. He spent the next hour talking as she sewed. She could have done it quicker but not knowing when or if they’d get a moment like this together again, she told herself that making sure each stitch was perfect was worth the extra time. Because that’s what this felt like now. These days felt like a gift, one she hadn’t expected but refused to waste a single minute of. It didn’t matter if this was her last week or her last hour. She was his mum and he needed his uniform sorted. His hand never wavered nor did he grow tired of casting and she gained strength through that. She had feared darkness in her final days, instead she was blanketed in light.
Fourth Year
Draco is sat in his office while his son sits in his bedroom. The past year their home had felt hollow, while the piece that was missing from his heart had steadily filled with grief and loneliness. He never expected that feeling to increase tenfold once Scorpius was back. Yet it has and he’s sure it’s breaking them both. He looks at her portrait, looks at the half empty bottle of firewhisky, looks at the door and thinks of his son beyond it. He drags his hands down his face and feels the three day old stubble he knew she’d tease him for. He’d experimented with facial hair when Scorpius was young. She’d laughed every time Scorpius would frown as he tried to pull it off his face. He could only speak in babbles and squeals at that point but it was enough to know he wasn’t a fan. Astoria, usually the first to offer her opinion, had held back until he directly asked her one night. She quietly told him it aged him, and he remembers opening his mouth to joke back, but her sad eyes stopped him. Because she’d never expected to see him in old age. He shaved it off later that night. Not wanting to remind her one more second of what she was going to miss. He promised her when they started dating, and again when he asked her to marry him, that they would live for today. That they’d live a whole lifetime in the precious days they’d have together. If she insisted on helping him through his past then he would pull all of her future into the now. Sudden pecking at the window knocks him out of his head. Letting the owl in, he unties the package and stops when he sees her name. He sits back down before slowly unwrapping it. The little white tags confuse him until he spots the lettering. S. Malfoy. He hadn’t even thought about the tags, not even in Madam Malkin’s as he watched his son stand unusually still as he was getting measured. He wanted to let the immediate feeling of failure overtake him. But seeing their names staring up at him from his desk stops him. He takes a deep breath and gets up and heads towards the sun room. The little box in the cupboard under the window seat is still there. Exactly where she had told Scorpius to return it to this time last year. He’s fallen down onto the seat with it in his hands before he realised. For once he’s glad Scorpius doesn’t venture out of his room much. He’d be embarrassed to be caught sat there staring at this box for as long as he does. Eventually he places it next to him and makes a decision. He pulls out his wand and summons the folded clothes still on the table where they’d left them earlier. He places them on the other side of him. He’s seen her do this before and failing that he’s fairly decent with a stitching charm, but he also knows what she’d want to do. So he does exactly that. If he can’t do it for himself yet, he’ll do it for her. He picks up the white thread and a needle and makes a start. Or he at least tries. He never knew how difficult this apparently was. Once he’s finally threaded the needle and worked out he needed to knot the end to stop it from coming through, he begins what he’s sure isn’t even a proper stitch. And yet it does seem to hold. Somehow. He feels the side of his mouth start to turn upwards and for the first time in a year, he doesn’t feel guilty about it. She’d have loved this. She’d have mocked him and then rewarded him with a kiss for his efforts and here in her sun room he feels her warmth as if she were in the room again. It takes him two hours. He loses count of the amount of times he has to heal his fingers and vanish spots of blood but he gets it done. The feeling of achievement, of love and hope, finally replacing some of the awful ones still filling the void. It’s what gives him the confidence to walk upstairs and knock on Scorpius’s door. He offers his son a gentle smile and his folded uniform and asks if he can help him pack.
Fifth Year
Draco doesn’t cancel the standing order Astoria had set up with the name tag company. He wonders if she set one up deliberately. Before he would have worried it's because she believed he’d forget. That he wouldn’t be able to parent by himself. Now he knows she did it to remind him he wasn’t alone. That she knew he’d never let their son go to school unprepared. It wasn’t lack of faith, it was just another way she had taken control of a destiny she couldn’t escape. She may have left this world but that wouldn’t stop her from being a mother and a wife. He obviously knew about the letters she’d asked him to hold onto until Scorpius was older. He also thought about the seventeenth birthday present she had already wrapped and stored in her wardrobe. He even started to find the little notes hidden in the pages of his own favourite books. (’I loved watching you read. You know that serious frown Scorpius does when he's trying to figure something out? It’s exactly what you do when the plot gets particularly complex. I’m glad our son inherited that from you. I hope he gains more. You have so much to offer the world, Draco. Don’t let them make you feel otherwise.’) So when the next order of name tags arrive, he smiles at her name. He thanks the owl and offers them a treat before shouting out for Scorpius. His son bounds into the room and sees the parcel and frowns. Draco can’t help but think back to the note. A chuckle must accompany his smile as Scorpius quickly looks up at his face and is even more confused.
“What would you say to helping me with something? Your mum made it look effortless but I can guarantee it’s difficult and dangerous. I actually lost quite a bit of blood last time.”
“What? What are you- are those my name tags? You’re… you’re talking about sewing on my name tags?”
“Your mother never used magic for this, you know.”
“Except for the anti-itch charm! She told me the night before I left for Hogwarts when she was double checking my trunk.”
“Oh… I didn’t think of that.”
“I know. I had Albus help me with the charm at school. Dad, it’s fine. You didn’t know.”
“You could have told me.”
“I’m telling you now.”
“Okay. Let’s do this. We’ll both sew and then you can show me the charm.”
“This definitely beats going on a walk.”
“What?”
“Nothing! Just an Albus thing.”
“Ah yes, talking of difficult and dangerous, how is my favourite Potter?”
“Dad!”
“You know I don’t mean it. Although surprisingly, the favourite Potter part I do. Don’t tell him that though. Or if you do, make sure it’s in front of his father.”
“I thought you two were friends now?”
“Hmm. I have you to thank for that too. Really though, tell me about what you two have got planned at the weekend. If I have to go play nice with the Potters, at least tell me you’re getting something out of it.”
They sit there, side by side in Astoria’s favourite window seat, for hours as they talk and teach each other, learning far more than a simple running stitch or a basic charm. They laugh and talk freely for what feels like the first time in years. Here in the sun room they only feel her presence, not her loss, and they heal far more than their bloodied fingers that afternoon. Draco helps Scorpius carry his uniform back up to his room and makes sure the shirt that they’d accidentally sewed the tag in upside down on (and had decided whilst still laughing not to fix) was packed on top. They were doing better but Draco wanted to make sure Scorpius never forgot, not for one single moment, that his parents loved him and were always with him. He swipes his thumb across the name tag and smiles. wrote

Hi! I read your HP ship post and I am so happy to find a Druna lover! I don't believe in girls enduring abuse to fix the bad boy but I don't think that Druna done right fits that trope. Luna is so forgiving and I think she and Draco make a cute couple in fanfics. Why do you hate Drastoria though? I don't like the pairing. Astoria sounds like a great woman but I think Draco deserves better than a sickly wife who dies off. Maybe if we saw her more in the series I would care more but I just don't.
Hi, thanks for the ask!
Draco doesn't need a significant other to fix him, and he doesn't need to change for a significant other, either. Canon gave him very good reasons to change by himself, for himself, and I hate it when people ignore that for the sake of being pro or anti some ship (not accusing you, just saying generally).
What he could need is someone to believe in and support his change, which I think Luna could be, because as you said, she's so forgiving. I think she sees humanity in everyone — bad people are just people with their humanity wounded. So she's willing to fight when necessary, but she doesn't take anything personally, and she would be genuinely happy for anyone to find healing.
As for Astoria, I don't consider the cursed play canon at all, so I don't even care that she dies in that particular, terrible fanfic. My feelings about her are weird, though, because she is a blank canvas of a character, so I don't know why I can't come up with a characterisation of her that appeals to me — but I can't. The only time I genuinely liked Drastoria was the sapphic version in Raise Yourself Clean (although she does die in this particular, excellent fanfic, too).

Do you think JKR is good at writing romance? (That might be worded weirdly). I love the HP canon couples. I love Jily and Romione and Hinny and Bleur and I've read Remadora, Drastoria, Dransy and George/Angelina, among others. I'm even fascinated by Channy and Chedric. The canon ships are the most interesting to me, and the ones I've read the most about. But I've been wondering lately if it's because of how they were written they are or if it's mostly because of the potential they had? What is it, for you?
I admit: I've came across some meta in the past weeks discussing the canon couples and like. I might have realized most of them might have at least some toxic traits in them? And that's not necessarily bad! That might very well be what makes them interesting. And it's also open to interpreation, as always, so it's not necessarily true either. And I definitely shouldn't make a habit of reading anti stuff about stuff I like. But. That made me think about if that was purposeful on JKR's part or if she's just that bad at writing romance. What do you think?
Also: What do you make of James hiding from Lily that he keeps hexing Snape? I love them, but I kind of really hate that piece of information about them. Not the hexing Snape part, but the "hiding something for your partner" bit. Do you have any other, better way of looking at that? 😢
I'm kind of pouring out my fandom experiences on you and. Let me know if it makes you uncomfortable. You don't need to answer if it does, and I'm really sorry.
I wouldn't say it was badly written, just that romance was not the main focus of the stories, but I am actually fine with the way most of them were written (and for those I'm not, hey, fanfics!).
I'm a fan of canon pairings because I think that was where the characters' progress took them and sometimes it's disregarding their story to ignore it. That's why I wouldn't ever break Ron and Hermione in any of my stories, for example; they have the best development, they are the definition of slow burn. All turns in their story are seen and narrated by Harry, from the moment they dislike each other, to Ron facing his fear of spider for her, their bickerings, first attraction, first heartbreak, understanding and then first kiss. And weirdly, that's why I am not interested in Romione fics; I am satisfied with their canon story.
About James and Lily:
“Well,” said Lupin slowly, “Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James, so you couldn’t really expect James to take that lying down, could you?” “And my mum was okay with that?” “She didn’t know too much about it, to tell you the truth,” said Sirius. “I mean, James didn’t take Snape on dates with her and jinx him in front of her, did he?”
I read this as (1) James reacting more than attacking in his later years; (2) though Lily was involved, she was not part of James and Snape's fights. In SWM, James was trying to get to Lily through Snape, something that I don't see him doing afterward; so I read Lily "not knowing too much about it" as Snape and James keeping this to themselves... and because yes, I defend James, I'd say that James would not want to share this with her to protect her (former friend in the path to being a Death Eater, right?).

Weasley is Our King: Slytherin House is the Best House
And as Lee paused to listen the song rose loud and clear from the sea of green and silver in the Slytherin section of the stands: Weasley cannot save a thing, He cannot block a single ring, That’s why Slytherins all sing: Weasley is our King. Weasley was born in a bin, He always lets the Quaffle in, Weasley will make sure we win, Weasley is our King.
“— and it’s Warrington with the Quaffle, Warrington heading for goal, he’s out of Bludger range with just the Keeper ahead —” A great swell of song rose from the Slytherin stands below: Weasley cannot save a thing, He cannot block a single ring . . .
There was no sign of the Snitch anywhere he looked; Malfoy was still circling the stadium just like Harry. They passed midway around the pitch going in opposite directions and Harry heard Malfoy singing loudly, WEASLEY WAS BORN IN A BIN . . .
Harry zoomed around the end of the stadium behind the Slytherin goal hoops, willing himself not to look at what was going on at Ron’s end; as he sped past the Slytherin Keeper, he heard Bletchley singing along with the crowd below, WEASLEY CANNOT SAVE A THING . . .
Harry did not have to look to see what had happened: There was a terrible groan from the Gryffindor end, coupled with fresh screams and applause from the Slytherins. Looking down, Harry saw the pug-faced Pansy Parkinson right at the front of the stands, her back to the pitch as she conducted the Slytherin supporters who were roaring: THAT’S WHY SLYTHERINS ALL SING: WEASLEY IS OUR KING.
Talk about team effort!!!
This is why it is a hard pill to swallow that Draco did not have real friends when my boy literally has his entire house singing his song!
Also, I never cared about Dransy but after reading meta on her from a certain user on Tumblr and looking closely at these book snippets, I am digging Dransy more than Drastoria! I think it would have been powerful to see Draco and Pansy redeem themselves together instead of Draco getting with some Mary Sue NPC.
Slytherins may have their internal squabbles, but when it comes to house unity, these guys are the best in the books. They didn't ostracize Draco the way the lions did Harry and the trio over house points. And there has to be a reason why the snakes were the undefeated house cup champs. Slytherin is the best house and I am not taking criticism.

for the ask ship game: drastoria, jeddy and romione
Tumblr media
romione: i feel like i shouldnt even talk and let the books do the talking for me. the slowburn was ferocious. the relationship building ate every other hp couple up. with each installation the verse puts out that includes them in it they’re even more in love. it makes me want to rip my hair out that so much romione content is sidelined for other ships and only exist as a side pairing to other ships. ron is so clearly the only one who makes sense for hermione and vice versa hermione to ron. i have never seen a good argument from a romione anti about why they shouldn’t be together or how they would not work out realistically. i can chalk every argument up to classism, a critique of ron’s portrayal in the movies, or a misunderstanding of character flaws that are exacerbated by PUBERTY and the general emotional instability of an average teenager. you look me in the eye and tell me you have never tweaked out when you were teenager. you look me in the eye and tell me that having magic wouldnt make that worse. i’ve actually already made an essay-long post about romione so lets not even get me started on it LOL
drastoria: i’ve already screamed about my reasons here.
jeddy: jeddy is hard because teddy and james sirius are mostly fanon so it’s difficult to ascertain whether they would make sense or not based on personality. we basically know nothing about teddy’s personality and get a handful of lines from james in the cursed child. they seem both to have a rebellious side— james opting to disobey his parents to have a good laugh and the rita skeeter article written about teddy at the quidditch world cup final (which could have been complete slander knowing skeeter) but from what little we do know— teddy is very close with the potter family (lily basically calls him family), presumably since he was born or at least very young since they consider each other family. teddy is also six years older than james. going off that alone, if teddy was around when james was very young, or even when he was born, then no, jeddy doesn’t make sense. it would be a bit creepy, no? fanonly, i’m 50/50– i’ve read some pretty shit jeddy fics but it comes with the territory of liking scorbus so i have to suck it up 😭 but yeah, its a no from me.

You can go to war with my filter list
22) your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
I wouldn’t say everyone else, but the complexity of Draco and Lucius’ relationship does get disregarded. Especially the fact that Lucius loves Draco even though he deeply injures his self-esteem and sense of identity
23) ship you've unwillingly come around to
Dramione. There are massively popular fics that I would read but I can’t. My mind rejects Draco not being with Harry and Draco being with women. :’)

“I’d sell my soul for another minute with Astoria.” - Draco Malfoy, CC
This line fucking broke me. Speaking as someone who has hated Draco since I started reading the series, I literally wanted to give him a huge hug when I read this :’(
