say i am writing a fic. the fic has a MCD death scene but if i put in an archive warning it will be very obvious who dies and if i dont, well thats just plain wrong. instead of using the MCD archive warning, can i simply use the "creator chose not to use archive warnings" warning and then put a MCD tag within the tags?
Short answer: Yes

For the fluff prompts… “I’m never going to leave you again. I promise.” For Fivesoka 🧡💙
- @queen-of-mandalore
Thanks for for the request! 💙🧡
As you already know, this drabble ended up with 0% fluff and 100% angst. Since I’ve been doing cloud themes for the fluff drabbles, I figured a lightning storm theme was appropriate for this one. 😆 Enjoy!
Word count: ~780
Warning: Major character death
It’s also here on AO3.

⛈️ Don’t Leave ⛈️
“She left.”
Fives’ heart pounded as he struggled to process Rex’s words, each beat creating more cracks, bringing him closer to breaking.
It wasn’t the fact that Ahsoka left that hurt. He understood. The Jedi had betrayed her and she’d nearly been executed because of it, so of course she couldn’t stay. It was the fact that she left without saying a word. No goodbye; she didn’t even inform him of her departure, he had to hear it from Rex over a day later.
Still, he clung to the hope that she would reach out. Maybe she just needed some time to recover and then she would contact him. But rotations passed and he heard nothing. He missed her constantly, but he gradually began to realize that whatever was between them was over. Once he accepted that, he knew he would never hear the words his heart wanted to hear, but he at least wished he knew she was safe.
He was tempted to try to find her. Coruscant was far from a small city, but he knew her and he knew how to find people. But what if she didn’t want to see him? If he found her, only for her to reject him… he wasn’t sure his heart could handle that.
His next ARC mission came before long and then it was a matter of trying to forget. Trying to erase from his memory all of the moments they’d had together, talking, cuddling, kissing, everything. More than likely, he’d never see her again. He just hoped, at the very least, she’d have a good life away from the Jedi and the GAR… and him.
It took months, but eventually he was able to vacate her from his mind and move on with his life. Not that he had much in the way of a life; it was really just an endless cycle of missions and battles and risking his own safety. But it was better than dwelling on the life he’d wished he’d had with Ahsoka.
In his last moments though, he did think of her. He was drugged, disoriented and losing his grip on reality. Everything was falling apart. The chips, the chancellor, Tup… Fives already knew that he wouldn’t be coming out of this alive. He heard his brother’s voices, saw the red and white of the Coruscant Guard as they closed in, and then there was a flash, followed by a searing pain in his chest.
As he fell, suddenly all he could think of was Ahsoka and, as the darkness claimed him, she was his only thought.
“Fives!”
He thought he would have died already, but blurry thoughts were still floating in his mind. He thought he heard her voice.
“Fives, stay with me!”
Her voice was different than he remembered. It was strained and high pitched and her words shook as she spoke.
“Fives, please!”
Was she crying? He’d never heard her cry before.
“Please…” she said again, her voice weaker.
He had no grasp of where he was or if he was even alive or conscious, but his heart pulled him towards her.
“‘Soka.”
He wasn’t sure any sound actually came out, but then he heard her gasp.
“Fives, I’m here.” He thought he felt her squeeze his hand.
He tried to open his eyes, but the darkness was still pulling on him, weighing him down. So he focused on his hand, summoning as much strength as he could to curl his fingers around hers.
She squeezed his hand even tighter and now he felt her leaning over him, hugging him awkwardly, her cheek next to his.
“I’m right here, Fives,” she said by his ear. “I’m so sorry I left. I’m never going to leave you again. I promise.”
He wanted to sob with relief, only he still couldn’t move his body. That was all he’d wanted; to be with her. It hadn’t even mattered where, as long as they were together. Suddenly it felt like he didn’t need to fight anymore and he felt his grip on her hand loosening as he faded farther from his body again.
“No, no, no, Fives, wait!” Her voice was rising in pitch again, her words coming out faster. “Please stay with me.”
He would. He always would stay by her side, but he’d have to tell her later. The darkness was folding over him now and she sounded far away, as if she were calling to him across an abyss. Her next words were so distant, he barely heard them.
“Fives, I love you, please don’t leave me!”
I love you too, ‘Soka, his mind said, but he was pretty sure she couldn’t hear him.
Then she was gone and he felt nothing.

There is not a bad selection of archive warnings to choose from. But I was just thinking I personally would like to see 'Suicide/Self-Harm' added as one of the major archive warnings. I was wondering about this because I might be writing a fic dealing with the topic and was just thinking about how to categorise it. Technically it could be 'No Archive Warnings Apply' but that just doesn't feel right, and the scene I have in mind does not warrant 'Graphic Depictions Of Violence' and no 'Major Character Death' but it would most definitely be triggering to someone sensitive to the topic. I'll probably end up with 'Chooes Not To Use Archive Warnings' and super plus tag it in the additional tags section. But it feels bigger than that, something heavy enough to be deserving of its own specific archive warning. What do you think? Should we get a new archive warning? Do you think it's deserving? I certainly do!

Sorry, not sorry, but this…
Tumblr media
is not how you use Archive Warnings.
Yeah, the “No Archive Warnings Apply” means what it says. Before it is “Graphic Depictions of Violence.” Wow, that sure looks like an archive warning to me.
Tag your fics correctly please. It’s not hard, and it’s the least you can do.
If you have another warning like “Graphic Depictions of Violence” then it’s completely erroneous to say “No Archive Warnings Apply.” I’m tired, people.

I share it again.
Squidgeworld update with Incest and/or Incestuous Relationship(s) and Suicide / Suicidal Ideations archive warnings, Chinese (Traditional), Spanish (LatAm), and Russian languages added.
Like I commented: Squidge get so many things I wish Ao3 would have. More archives warnings, more relationships types, accept custom Orignal Works into a wrangled tag, less delay to wrangle a new fandom, adding languages upon request, etc.
Feel free to open a account there. There is no need to wait for a invite, which is pretty cool.

Okay, I get what you're trying to do here, but this is not actually true.
"No Archive Warnings Apply" is used when none of the required archive warnings are present in the fic, correct. This is for fics which do not contain Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con, or Underage content.
HOWEVER. This emphatically does not mean the NAWA tag is only for "fluff, soft character, chill smut or story fics." A NAWA fic may contain balls to the wall raunchy smut, Blorbo's terrible horrible no good very bad day, massive violence not graphically depicted, relationships that are deeply unsettling to every outside observer within and without the story, whump, heartbreak, tragedy, and much much more. A fic being marked "No Archive Warnings Apply" is not a guarantee that anyone involved is going to have a good time — only that there is no Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con, or Underage. There is a reason AO3 also has ratings and other tags available to authors.
"Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" is, as you say, the "Enter at Your Own Risk" flag, but NOT because it means one of the Archive Warnings or other heavy content is necessarily present.
CNTW means precisely what it says — the creator elected not to use the Archive Warnings. It may contain all of them. It may contain none of them. It may contain weird edge cases where the author was unsure if an Archive Warning would apply. It might be a fic with dark, heavy, or disturbing themes despite the absence of those big four. It might be a perfectly pleasant T-rated fic posted by someone who simply does not philosophically vibe with mandatory warnings. (Those writers exist!) It may even be nothing but fluff imported through the open doors program from an older archive that didn't use any kind of warning system. CNTW offers no guarantees as to content; it simply stands as a signal to the reader that this work's metadata cannot tell them what lies ahead.
Now will many authors, out of preference, courtesy, or habit, choose NAWA for "softer" fics and CNTW for "darker" fics? Certainly. But this is neither universal nor required by the Archive. The warning tags mean what they say, no more, no less.
Dear writers on AO3: "No archive warnings apply" is for your fluff, soft character, chill smut or story fics. It's for when there's nothing big/triggering and none of the major archive warnings show up in your story.
"Creator chose not to use archive warnings" is THE EXACT OPPOSITE. It is a Massive "enter at your own risk" sign indicating one or more of the major archive warnings or other nasty/gnarly/triggering tags may apply but would be a major spoiler to tag (e.g. horror/thriller fics where one of the major characters is killed). PLEASE don't use this tag if you mean "no archive warnings apply," they're not the same thing.
Sincerely, someone who just saw four T-rated fluff fics in a row tagged "creator chose not to use archive warnings" and had a minor heart attack.

Note
I have a question regarding the violence warning. What is considered violent enough to get that warning?
According to Ao3’s FAQ regarding Archive warnings:
“Graphic Depictions Of Violence:
This is for gory, graphic, explicitly described violence. Exactly where to draw the line is your call.”
Thanks for asking!

Since Ao3 has temporarily disabled guest comments due to very mean and pornographic bots, now is a very good time for 1) readers with Ao3 accounts to comment on the fics they love and cherish to make up for those who cannot leave guest comments and 2) readers without Ao3 accounts to join the waitlist and make an account!
