Honestly, Alastor is such a breath of fresh air as a character.

Since TV and media has been getting more and more romance and sex obsessed it's such a blessing to have a character who's repulsive to both. And not to have said character be boring or mundane or stereotyped, but actually super fun, cool and badass.

As an aroace person, it's such a wonderful comfort to see someone perfectly content with their life just as they are. To know that someone as interesting as him is not lesser or more inferior for not "fitting in" like everyone else. I mean, this guy has the most aroace swagger I've ever seen on television, and people still ship him with at least half the characters because that's just how charming he is. And I don't care that he's an evil sadistic bitch because he's my evil sadistic bitch.

This character means so much and it's such a big weight lift to see someone NOT in a relationship, it gets so tiresome seeing every single character in a show be paired with someone else because god forbid they're single otherwise it would be a tragedy. It adds such a wondeful flavour of diversity to the show.

He's just making me feel proud for being aroace, and that's exactly why representation matters.

I just know Vox would piss himself in anger if he saw how bothered Alastor gets with Lucifer. Alastor barley gives Vox the time of day. He treats him at best as a minor annoyance, and at worst another petty drama for Alastor to get entertainment from. Oh, but with Lucifer? Lucy gets genuine malicious cussing and a song that doesn't end with Alastor as the clear winner, hell, a song that's a real back and forth argument rather than in Stayed Gone what were mostly Mean Girls style insults from Alastor. Alastor and Lucifer get in each other's face and push each other around. Vox would be sobbing desperately on the floor in the fetal position for 1/4 of that type of attention from Alastor.

Apparently, Alastor is not canonically aromantic?? Amir apologized on Twitter a few days ago, stating that it's not confirmed and it was a misinfo on his side..

okay. I'm putting my other asks a bit on hold for this, I have seen that tweet, I was hoping I wouldn't have to talk about it though but I think it's good to address it, let me take it apart

he says alastor being aromantic is not "explicitly known", only his asexuality is because "ace" is verbally stated in the script (also yes he made a cannon/canon joke)

I don't think the tweet should be taken as "nooo alastor being aromantic is deconfirmed :(" because it moreso puts emphasis on his asexuality being 100% undeniably canon.

keyword I think is "EXPLICITLY KNOWN"

I still think the context in which alastor's asexuality is confirmed in-canon ALSO implies aromanticism because the context which rosie jokes about is alastor dating charlie and she basically says "HAHAHA jk I know you'd never do that because I know you're aroace! (ace in the hole)", of course there are issues in that, they use ace here to describe an aromantic situation, which isn't good because the two get mixed up as it is but it's honestly better than nothing, most aspec characters don't even get THAT

but either way, how I see it:

alastor's asexuality is explicit (stated verbally in the text)

alastor's aromanticism is implicit (implied in the text)

I don't think alastor's aroaceness is necessarily less canon now, sure the amir talai word of god was withdrawn but the implication that alastor is also aro is still in the text with the rosie dialogue

Ok Alastor shippers of all sorts, I'm going to put in my two cents and before I get into I'm a pro shipper all around just don't be mean to each other and tags are there for a reason.

My credentials: I'm an gray ace, aro person who's been around Fandom a very long time. Personally I've been initiated with the “but al is ace aro so you can't ship him” discourse and first off that's not true both because we can date -I Have a long term Partner- and because I've explored a lot of my queer identity through Fandom and fanfics and I think others should get the chance to do the same. I'm sure a lot of people will learn they’re ace aro because of alastor. That being said ik a lot of you writers out there aren't ace aro and are new to the topic so I'm going to go over some of my personal suggestions of how you could make Canon compliant works. (And if you do any or find any please send to me I'd love to see it)

Oblivious Alastor

Canonically this man doesn't know he's an ace in the hole. And I don't believe an egomaniac like him would assume that there's anything “different” about himself. ik when I was a baby ace I thought everyone was just being dramatic basically before realizing I was the exception. I can see this going 2 ways.

Radiostatic (pre show): vox is obviously completely smitten with al and al sees dating a more powerful overlord as an advantage(which vox in the past was the more powerful of the two). And Al starts getting slowly more and more uncomfortable and vox gets pushy in a very manipulative way.

Radioapple: enemies to friends to lovers? After Al and Luci become close friends, Luci starts to catch feelings for Al and Al agrees to date him seeing as he is fond of him and he's a very powerful ally so why wouldn't Al date him? As the relationship progresses they’re both confused by Alastor's behavior. Luci tries to be respectful. You know maybe he's just very against pda. And al doesnt understand why he's not feeling the things he's meant to.

I can see Al reverse heteronormativity- ing his way into assuming he's gay because he's NOT straight.

Malicious intent

Same as the last one except Al knows he doesn't have feelings for them like that and is trying to be toxic and uses them. IE what if Al was a gold digger actually.

Maybe I am in love?

Al actually thinks that he MUST be feeling a romantic connection because this is the closest he's ever been to someone and once again, gets steadily more confused as he realizes what he and his partner are experiencing is different.

All of these can end in nice queer platonic bliss and I think any story where Al and his partner discover he's ace after establishing the relationship is inherently interesting.

Last note some ace vocabulary

Ace and aro are a spectrum. Typically with ace people they will self identify as either sex positive, sex negative, or sex neutral. With Al it's generally head cannoned that he's sex negative but that's not explicitly Cannon and sex positive and neutral aces are valid.

Sex negative: is self explanatory it's what everyone thinks aces are; I don't want sex ever the idea grosses me out ect.

Sex neutral: is when someone doesn't have the desire for sex but isn't repulsed by it either. If they are in a relationship and their partner wants to have sex they’re open to it but don't expect initiation on their part.

Sex positive: people have a hard time understanding this because it's the seperating of the need for sex from the want. Typically if a sex positive ace were to never have sex again they'd die happy but if they have a willing partner they are happy to participate. It builds intimacy. It feels good, it's nice but it's not the same as being allo and having that cardinal lust.

note: please know what type your head cannoning Al as in your works when writing it, although people of course can change which they feel they align with, it's important to know how he's feeling about it.

I'm not as familiar with aro terminology but like with ace it's more about the drive the need the anguish. Al wouldn’t in cannon crave romantic connection.

Like with ace it's not actually cannon what type of aro he is some aro people are completely repulsed by the idea of romantic relationships or they only like it in theory (which playing around with the idea of Al liking a relationship in theory but not in practice could be a lot of fun.)

The gray romantic umbrella are aro people who can have romantic attraction to some degree. They’re still aro you can head cannon Al as it but please do a little research into which one you think your version of Al would identify with there quite a few so I'll spare the list here.

Demi romantic is when someone can develop romantic attraction for very specific people, very rarely. These people won't be on Bumble but might fall for someone after knowing them for a few years (or an indeterminate amount of time, my timeline was a year and a half I shit you not) a lot of you are looking for that.

As for kink. Lots of queer people especially are into kink because it's intimate, it's physical, it requires trust but it's not actually inherently sexual a lot of the time. And we do know that Al likes torturing and being dominant so yeah he'd be kinky that's completely canon compliant.

At the end of the day Al is ace aro in the show and that's what counts. Have fun be creative, explore the depths of your queer little minds and please be nice to each other.

Don't sit here and feed me an essay on how Aromanticism is a spectrum. Don't try and convince me he's "Just Ace, not Aro" because the marketing team and the subtext of the show has made his identity, abundantly clear..

Just do it. If you're going to, just get on with it.

Because it's honestly so much more insulting to hear someone treat my sexuality like some horrible cock block that ruins their day than it is for them to just do what they're inevitably going to and leaving me the hell out of it.

I’ve heard a lot about Alastor being the one to ruin Vox but have we considered Vox ruining Alastor?

Alastor wanting to have a comfortable, stable friendship with Vox similar to what he has with Rosie but it gets ruined when he finds out Vox has viewed him as a sexual object the entire time and wanted the end goal to be a romantic state.

Resulting in Alastor being even more untrusting, sticking only to people who aren’t attracted to men. He’s stuck desperately desiring friendship with people but worried that’s a fantasy with how most people sexualize him in some form.

Even though the aro part hasn't been confirmed in the show yet, Al is 100% at least somewhere on the aro spectrum. I personally think he's either fully aro or demiromantic. But-

If Alastor experiences some form of romantic attraction, he still despises talking about romance. It's not entertaining to him - when it's a healthy relationship it'll be the same general conversation; when it's an unhealthy one he'll think it's stupid because the solutions are either dump their ass or communicate and yet they do neither.

If he ever does get into a romantic relationship, he would never tell anybody because he would think it's boring conversation. Imagine one day his partner decides to visit him at the hotel and Charlie's just like "who are you? Are you here to check in!?" And they say "no...? I'm Alastor's partner. We've been together for years, he hasn't talked about me?" Charlie promptly yells at Al for not telling her because she's so happy for him, but he just felt like it didn't matter in conversation.

Chapter 2/?

Charlie was in a panic after her meeting with the council of angels, so Alastor decided to keep their new guest a secret till he was done with his current plan. He informed Nifty and Husker to be gentle with the new guest if she woke up while he was gone, as he had plans for her.

He took Charlie to cannibal town and Vaggie went to see Carmilla.

Husker's curiosity got the better of him, and he went to knock on her door. She answered through the door, “who is it?”

He was surprised by how gentle her voice sounded, but he also knew not to make assumptions about a demon just because they sounded soft and weak. “Name's Husk, I'm the barkeep. Alastor told me to check on you.”

She called out from behind the door, “I'm fine! Um, if you have a shirt or sweater I could borrow though? My own got shredded recently. And I… I don't exactly have any possessions at the moment.” She sounded nervous.

“Uh, gimme a sec and I'll see what I can get ya.”

 Husk was a bit unnerved by this news. So he went down to bug the others while they were fortifying the place. “Hey, Angel Dust! You got any spare sweaters?”

He gave husk a weird look, “nothing in your style whiskers, why? You got a kink you're ready to share with the class?”

He groaned, “ugh, fuck no! Alastor brought some new sinner here last night while we were gone, and she said her shirt is too ripped up to come out of her room! I thought if anyone had something she could use it'd be you.” 

Angel frowned, “her shirts all ripped up? Alright, I'll be back, everyone.” He went upstairs and got a fluffy pink sweater from his closet, then looked at her door, right next to his. There was already a sign that said “Zariah”. Angel knocked on the door. “Hey, you the new girl?” He called. “I brought you a sweater.” She unlocked the door and peeked out at him, “ oh, hello, I'm Zariah. Oh, you're so pretty!” She opened the door more, covering her chest with her tail. He smiled and handed her the sweater. “Thanks doll, you're a cutie yourself. So, Al picked ya up off the streets? How did your shirt get torn?” He invited himself into her room.

She turned and frowned, “I was going to change… my shirt is all bloody. He found me in an alley and brought me here to heal.”

“Oh, don't be shy. I'm not into women, so don't worry about that! Hey, when Charlie gets back, we should work on customizing your room!” He laid down on her bed. She sighed and went to her bathroom and changed in there. When she came back out she smiled, hiding her old shirt in the bathtub for now. “I'd love that! So far everyone here has been so kind.” 

Angel smiled and sat up, “well I'm glad you think so. Hopefully you know how to fight? Because a war is coming our way, and I can't promise who will survive and who won't.” 

She looked shocked, “a war?! With who?! I'm not a fighter!”

He sighed, “then why the hell did Al drag you into this? Heaven is gonna try and fuck our shit up. We're gonna try to fight back. Apparently angel's can be killed.” 

She looked even more terrified, “th- the exorcists are coming?! Here?! I- I- oh fuck, oh shit! I'm gonna die!” She fell to her knees and began shaking. Angel came over and hugged her, “hey, hey, calm down. It's just another extermination. You'll survive. We'll find a place to hide you, okay?” She took a few deep breaths to calm down.

“O-okay… I… I know how to heal, like, healing powers. I can be a medic, maybe.” 

“Healing powers? No wonder Al picked you up!” He smiled, “Come on, let me introduce you to everyone.” he got up and took her hands, leading her to her feet and out to meet everyone else.

Eventually, Alastor, Charlie, and Vaggie returned with their reinforcements, and Charlie was excited to see everyone there, but…

“Oh! Who's this new friend?” She smiled and approached Zariah. She smiled, “hi! Alastor brought me here yesterday, I was really badly hurt and he said this was a safe place. I hope you don't mind. I'm not really a fighter, but I want to help protect everyone here from the exorcists!” 

Charlie smiled back and hugged her tight, “that's great! Thank you so much, whatever way you can help will be appreciated!” 

Zariah hugged back and purred, happy to be accepted so easily. Alastor blinked in surprise, “my dear, is that purring?! How adorable!” As she let go of Charlie, Alastor reached over and pet Zariah's head. She purred even louder and her ears twitched a little as she leaned into the affection. “Thank you! I pride myself on being cute!”

After a moment, he pulled his hand away, “hm, enough of that silliness.” He then wandered off towards his radio tower. It took him a little bit to realize she was following him. He stopped in the middle of the hall, “did you need something from me, dear?” He looked over his shoulder with his constant smile.

“Oh, I was curious where you were going? Everyone else is working to learn to fight with the angelic weapons you all brought. But since I'm not a fighter, I don't know how to help or where I'll be safest to hide if Adam shows up…”

“Oh? A safe place for our little fox to hide? Follow me, my dear.” He led the way, and she followed close behind. 

“Okay, I like the way you call me ‘dear’ all the time. It feels nice.” She smiled brightly, feeling so safe here in the hotel. 

He brought her into his radio tower. “Most demons are too scared to approach my radio tower. Just know, if the On Air sign is on, do not enter or knock. Or else I will be very cross with you.” His eyes glowed just a little in warning.

She nodded, still smiling softly, “yes sir!” She looked around. “When I was alive, there was a podcast made to sound like an old fashioned radio broadcast. It was my favorite thing to fall asleep to. Cecil was an amazing radio host.” She reached out towards the radio panels, but didn't touch. 

Alastor raised an eyebrow, “I see. So you enjoy radio?”

“Oh yes! Mostly FM stations, music is in my blood. But I enjoy radio talk shows and stories as well. As long as the voice is soothing. Yours is really nice. When do you do your shows? And what kind of shows are they?” She was so chatty now that she felt comfortable with him.

“Why thank you for the compliment, my dear. My broadcasts vary depending on my moods. Sometimes I'll just report on the tea around the rings, and sometimes… I'll remind people why I'm not someone you cross.”

“Hm. Have you ever read stories? Like Listener submitted short stories?” She looked at him with a head tilt. He chuckled,

“My dear, you are the first to dare to suggest any adjustments to my radio show.” His smile had a dangerous quality to it, but she didn't budge other than turning her head the other way.

“Is that a bad thing?”

“Hm… no, I like how bold you are. It's refreshing. I'm used to fear from most who interact with me… how about we make a deal? Hm?”

“A deal? What kind of deal?”

“During the battle, you may hide in my radio tower if things get too intense. And in exchange, any time I need healing, you must provide it for me.” 

“Hm… any time you need to be healed, I will gladly give you healing. And how about, any time the on air sign is off, I can hide in here if needed?” She held out her hand.

He raised an eyebrow, surprised that she'd counter offer. “Hm, fair enough.” He took her hand and the whole room went green and wind swirled around them as the deal was sealed in magic. She looked around in shock, before fixing her hair from her face.

“Whoa, that was cool!” She laughed a little. “I didn't know you had windy powers too!”

“Actually, that's just the side effects of making a deal with a powerful demon.” He smiled, waiting to see if she'd show any signs of realizing what she'd done, only to realize she was rather innocent to how this whole thing worked.

“I think you and I will be very good friends…” He chuckled. 

He reached out to ruffle her hair again.

“Hey, I just fixed that!” She laughed again, and his smile softened. He had begun securing her as his new pet.
