I'm trying to convince myself that my sketches are still good and valid art, and I think this might be the sketch to change my mind--I'm really, really happy with how it came out on several levels. It was really nice to see my going back to the basics HAS made an impact on my style, I felt a little lost in my art journey for most of 2022.

It's that time of year again. I need betas! This is my newest work, a high fantasy standalone exploring a culture without sexual or gender binary, complex family dynamics, grief, respect & abuse of nature, and cultural duty.

The reading period will be from June 1st to July 31st.

When Sasha's family farm is attacked by mysterious poisonous creatures from the sea and her sibling is poisoned, she must trek into the most dangerous magical jungle in the world to find a cure. The only person willing to go with her is a nomadic stranger who seems to be lying about who she is and what she wants. Sasha must uncover the truth of both the poison and the stranger, or else it won’t only be her family who suffers, but the entire island.

“Do you think you can extricate the cook for me? Say whatever you need to get her to come to one of the private rooms for me to interview her. But keep it on the low. There’s a few people I’d like to talk to before the whole hue and cry goes up.” At that moment, the door at the top of the stairs flew open, and a maid in a state of despair worthy of a Greek tragedy came flustering in, and yelled at the top of her lungs into the rooms below.  “‘IS LORDSHIP’S BEEN MURDERED!” From below, gasps of shock and despair filtered up, and the noise of cooking and pleasant bustle became a rush of panicked bodies. I sighed a long breath out, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Never mind. But - the cook, if you please.”

I'm starting to really love how beleaguered and also how savage Williamson is. And I just broke 5k! 🎉

Thank you @k-v-briarwood for tagging me. These are some lines from yet another magical boy transformation sequence, because I can't get enough of writing them and I think I finally figured out how I wanna go about them.

Whatever invisible entity forced him to 'transform' last time nudges at his chin gently, almost as if apologising for its previous misconduct. Beau scoffs, "It doesn't matter how gentle you are, you're going to do it anyway, right?" Intense heat envelops him, like an internal furnace has been set ablaze inside his body. The flames burn through him, faster than last time, but the embers smoulder for longer. He trembles under the feather-light, hot touch. They're like swift brush-strokes —made by a steady, yet tender hand— there where his veins carry blood to different parts of his body. It's over before the fire could truly settle under Beau's skin, but the pace has left him panting for breath. His heart hammering in his chest. "You did not want to go slow," A deep voice explains in his ears, stern but not callous, "so you got your wish."

First Ship: Oh god I don't even know. Probably Link and Zelda from the Legend of Zelda, or Jessica and Angelo from Dragon Quest VIII?? That's the earliest I can remember rooting for as a small child, at least.

Currently Consuming: Leftover vegetarian chili and vegan cornbread. Personally not vegetarian, but my partner is! (it was our first attempt at making it together and we didn't follow a recipe for the chili. And it was just so good).

Finally

They made their way into the building, which was in the final stages of placing furniture. Justin did not talk much, but let Clarisse lead him inside before running into one of his trusted people.

“Clarisse?” Clarisse turned. She found Francisca and Carlos staring at her in concern. “Goodness me! Are you ill?” asked Carlos. “Why didn’t you tell us?” “I am fine, Carlos,” Clarisse answered. “I just saw someone unpleasant but nothing more.” “Probably a nuno who left the punso,” Francisca dryly supplied. Clarisse laughed, startled at what her friend had just said.

Dark

The lights grew dim around them—not totally dark—before the spotlights grew bright in intensity at the center, forming a silhouette of figures until they grew visible. The performers, resplendent in shining, shimmering if fitted costumes, lined in a horizontal line, eyes downcast.

Light

Appearing tall and larger than life, a lone man was taking on three—or four?—men surrounding him with the intention of taking him down. One of them had a knife in hand, the blade gleaming in the dim light, while the others were ready to pounce on him. And yet, even in the dim light, the man radiated danger and power that kept the surrounding thugs at bay.

These snips are all from my newest wip, ds!

RED

I rotated so my face went under the surface, opening my eyes to see through the crystal clear water. Beneath the magmum floor, I could see glimpses of red, heat rising. The heat here, the last of the extinct volcano, was as ancient as this temple.

ORANGE

A smell wafted to me, separate from the sweet roasted scent from the altar. This one was citrus, like the oranges that grew in the palace garden.

YELLOW

“Well, do whatever you want, I say.” Saya slid off the rock, her bare feet landing on the soft white-yellow sand with a thump. “Done pestering me?” “For tonight,” she said. “Enjoy your brooding alone time on the rock.”

GREEN

But I realized the mess they made wasn’t just from stomping, but a residue left in their wake. It left a faint afterglow, a duller green than their skin, that stuck to the dirt and strands of grass. As the afterglow faded away, even in the darkness I could tell it left the blades of grass shriveled and brown and dead.

BLUE

Before I could gawk any further, something skittered by my feet and startled me. It was a salamander, one of the blue ones. It squatted down to see it closer, where I could see its scaley skin. Each scale glowed uniquely, varying shades of blue that, from a distance, looked like one solid color. I ran my finger down the salamander and it nudged me, tail shaking back and forth to assess my threat level. It must have decided I was not a danger to it, as curled up in a circle beneath by finger and let me caress it.

INDIGO PURPLE

The people split down the middle, making room for the familiar voice. Tolai, wearing my favorite of her deep purple robes—the one with the belt made of sand dollars—stepped forth to the front before the warriors and the mysterious monk.

VIOLET BURGUNDY

As if reading my mind, a moth approached me, this one with sharp lines on its wings that reminded me of the triangular pivots of my mami’s earned marks. On the cusp of its larger wings, two small eyes looked back at me, glowing the same burgundy of seers.

OKAY HERE WE GO here's the official final accountability thread for my WIP 🍄 Cavernous 🍄

If all goes well, (and barring final surface level copyedits and proofreading) this will be the last round changes I'm making before publishing. My life is literally in a bunch of cardboard boxes all over the house at the moment as I've just moved across the country so I wanted to make a visual checkpoint to share to keep myself on track in the chaos so that I can finish this sooner rather than later.

This will be my first time self-publishing, and I know there's a learning curve and a lot of work to do still, so I don't have a ballpark release date just yet, but stay tuned and apologies in advance for taking a stop-and-start pace with this one. I'd like for this book to turn out as polished as possible.

My writing partner / editor on this project (i.e. the other half of the KJ moniker) is going to be doing some passes on chapters or parts of chapters I'm having a hard time cracking - mostly dialog reworks. I'm extreeemely excited to see what she cooks up. I won't reblog this every time I finish a chapter, but every once in a while, and if people seem interested I'll elaborate about my process for each bit! Feel free to ask questions! (Or pester me if you notice I've gone a long time without making progress lol)
