(and tbh it’s the 50s so he wouldnt be able to perform grief publicly anyway!!!!) the play starts with a car accident… anyone would search for some hidden meaning there, some sign…. so when he talks to margot robbie outside it’s not really about finding the CHARACTER’s motivations it’s about the actor himself being able to process the playwright’s death! and adrien brody director was probably also dealing with that too (him and norton seemed to be good buddies) so the whole “sleeping backstage” thing gets a bit sadder maybe? maybe everyone else got this in the theatre and im just stupid lol but crazy making stuff to me!!! the whole story is about sublimated gay grief that cannot be expressed?!?!
the tweet that caught me onto this was here which posits that the playwright’s death was a suicide but i think that’s pretty stupid and unnecessary because the whole thing about the play asteroid city is that death is random and meaningless. im pretty sure that’s what the alien represents— a shocking and absurd event that isnt outright evil or menacing, not something anyone can predict or make sense of, it’s just a thing that happens to you out of nowhere, it doesnt mean anything. he’s a little black figure, he’s death! giving and taking! aagh

With it came the most passionate crowds I’ve ever played for, new traditions in the show, and an entirely new era added in. It was a more hectic pace than we’d done before, and I’m so proud of my crew/fellow performers for being able to physically perform that show and build our massive stage, take it apart, and make magic with so few days in between for recovery and travel. They’re the most impressive people I know and I’m so lucky they gave The Eras Tour their time, their energy, and their expertise. Walking onstage in London was a rollercoaster of emotions. Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives. I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together. I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London. My team and I worked hand in hand with stadium staff and British authorities every day in pursuit of that goal, and I want to thank them for everything they did for us. Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows. In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that. And then London felt like a beautiful dream sequence. All five crowds at Wembley Stadium were bursting with passion, joy, and exuberance. The energy in that stadium was like the most giant bear hug from 92,000 people each night, and it brought me back to a place of carefree calm up there.

It was the most dizzying honor to become the first solo artist to play Wembley 8 times in one tour. You made such excellent points- in OG book vampirism is imposed on Mina by outside force and Mina actually can be cured from it if they kill Dracula. But if not Jonathan is ready to become vampire himself. Ellen meanwhile was born like that - with her psychic paranormal abilities. Orlok didn’t make her like that, that’s her forever part. But Thomas essentially wants her to be normal, while she never was in the traditional sense and can’t be normal and in his hunt for Orlok seems to believe that killing him would not only save but cure-fix Ellen too. It won’t. I mean Thomas is the one, who proceeds to have sex with Ellen when she’s not even feeling perfectly coherent, not entirely self, because he wants to show his masculinity or idk. Imagine if after Dracula’s attack on Mina and Mina telling about it Jonathan would immediately proceed to have aggressive sex with her instead of just comforting her, because he needs to reestablish his husband’s rights or something? Like that’s not. But that’s the part of why book Jonathan and 2024 remake Thomas are different characters.

There is a lot to say about this particular sequence, mainly because it forces two characters to deal with each other and face the reality of their marriage, while both are emotionally stripped to the bone and unstable. The result is an incredibly revealing scene. It digs into the Hutters' insecurities, fears, hurts - and even though they largely fail to communicate within their fictional framework, the viewer gets a veritable feast of information regarding them both.
Throughout this scene, Ellen is evidently in a psychic trance; as demonstrated by Von Franz and his needle, during these "fits" she is at least partially astral projecting; her soul is not entirely housed in her body and she often appears to be sleepwalking (which might be a reference both to the original 1922 Nosferatu and Eggers' earlier project The Witch). In this state, she is also not in control of the baser, more physical, less rational passions and desires; she is unbound, stripped of her usual repression - and what lies beneath is a lifetime of neglect, loneliness, and disrespect, as well as all the pain and rage she consequently feels. This is not a surprise for the viewer, who has already witnessed her suffering, her lack of autonomy, and her argument with Harding; but it is absolutely a surprise for Thomas.
Thomas cannot fathom why Ellen would be angry with him; in his mind, he has done everything right - provided for her, prioritized their financial advancement, came back to try and save her from the monster he knows is after her. However, what he fails to understand that he has also cut their honeymoon short, that he left her right after that to travel to another country, that she never cared about wealth beyond being able to afford a somewhat stable existence; what Ellen wants, above all else, is to be known, understood, and respected - and Thomas has failed to give her that. He discourages her from talking about her dreams, he does not understand her priorities in life, and he cannot help but patronize her, even when he is attempting to express his affections. Her visceral anger is a shock to him, it catches him entirely off-guard, and then she drops a final bomb - "you could never please me the way he does."
What Ellen means here is that Orlok, a monster, is the only one who has ever understood her - because she is herself a monster. What she is trying to do is bait Thomas into exposing what she believes he truly thinks of her, now that he has seen what she becomes, liberated by the nightfall.* This is obviously a toxic thing to do, but Ellen is not a healthy or balanced individual, and this is a gothic story, so yes, she baits him (rather blatantly, in my opinion; but I've seen people confused about it, so who knows. Admittedly, I have a rather specific sort of practical background, as far as relationships go). Point is, what she expects from him is a rejection; and what she craves, desperately, is his acceptance.
What Thomas hears, however, is that another man has infringed upon what is legally his - and that his masculinity is in question, rather than Ellen's humanity; which lands a critical hit against his already damaged, patriarchal, 19th-century-misogynistic ego.
To fully understand his reaction, we must really dig into his overall narrative context. From the very beginning of the film, and throughout the story, Thomas Hutter's struggles revolve around his continuous emasculation. He is a low-level part-time employee at a real estate firm that is run exclusively by older, well-established men. He is played for a fool by foreigners who steal his horse (they were just trying to save his life, seriously, they didn't think he'd hike the fucking Carpathians on foot in the winter, but that's not how he perceives that situation). He is trapped in Orlok's castle - and, given the sexual allegories of vampirism, arguably assaulted. I'm not going to go into the full background of queerphobic stereotypes and opinions; still, suffice to say that not only would that experience have been traumatic (understandably so), but also that the act of submitting to penetration (here, biting) by another man has been historically seen as inherently emasculating and degrading. In the context of Nosferatu (or Dracula, or Interview with the Vampire, and others), this scenario is, on a largely Doylist level, a bodice-ripper fantasy; however, that doesn't make it any easier for Thomas to accept. To submit to another (even a richer, older, infinitely more powerful) man is a problem - but to enjoy that position is unforgivable.
All that to say - by the time Thomas returns to Wisborg, his sense of self-worth is in shambles. The narrative has assigned him the role of a Damsel in Distress, which he fits perfectly and obviously resents. Thus, when he hears yet another insult from his wife - who may be higher-born, but still his wife, and thus below him - he reacts accordingly, with fury.
Again, in anticipation of discourse wank - this is not a good thing; his reasons are clear, I understand them, I do not excuse him. What Thomas does at this point is attempt to aggressively reassert his claim and right to Ellen as her husband. He's rough, but uninventive; he also doesn't worship her the way Orlok did; and, ultimately, even as he tries to demonstrate his continued interest and desire for her, he ends up proving her anxieties. When faced with a hallucination - a fraction of her psychic gift - he flings her away. Crucially, he cannot "show" Orlok their love.
After that, he does try to reassure her, be gentle with her, declare his love - but, really, he might as well mark that off as another failure. She has seen how terrified he looked, and she will not believe a word he says.
The whole scene is a distillation of their dynamic. It's one disconnect after another, strung together by his inability to listen, her lack of trust, and their shared resentment. Thomas and Ellen's relationship is hindered at every turn by the misogyny, queerphobia, and repression that are built into the cage that is their society. The film is an exploration of that cage. Its bars are the driving force behind the plot.
* NIGHTFALL - the diurnal, or gas-lit (it's on the nose. it's SO on the nose) scenes are a visual shorthand for the "normal" accepted society. It is Rational (hence the scientific "gaseous" light), it is godly (sunlight), it is the domain of the Hardings and Sievers of the story. The moonlight and firelight provide a similar distinction to the scenes that delve into the Emotional and the demonic, removing the subjects from the usual societal restrictions; those light sources are generally considered to be magical, primal, raw. It's fascinating, seriously - if you ever watch this film again, try to pay attention to the lighting!

taylorswift: In summation We have officially wrapped the European leg of The Eras Tour. With it came the most passionate crowds I’ve ever played for, new traditions in the show, and an entirely new era added in. It was a more hectic pace than we’d done before, and I’m so proud of my crew/fellow performers for being able to physically perform that show and build our massive stage, take it apart, and make magic with so few days in between for recovery and travel. They’re the most impressive people I know and I’m so lucky they gave The Eras Tour their time, their energy, and their expertise. Walking onstage in London was a rollercoaster of emotions. Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives. I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together. I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London. My team and I worked hand in hand with stadium staff and British authorities every day in pursuit of that goal, and I want to thank them for everything they did for us. Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows. In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that. And then London felt like a beautiful dream sequence. All five crowds at Wembley Stadium were bursting with passion, joy, and exuberance. The energy in that stadium was like the most giant bear hug from 92,000 people each night, and it brought me back to a place of carefree calm up there.
We had some EPIC surprise performances from my long time friends @ teddysphotos, @ florenceandthemachine, and @ jackantonoff. Performing ‘Florida!!!’ with Flo for the first time was unforgettable and Ed took me right back to our old Red Tour memories. It was the most dizzying honor to become the first solo artist to play Wembley 8 times in one tour. To the fans who have seen us this summer, you’ll always have the most sparkling place in my memories. You were a dream to perform for, dance with, and share those magical moments with. We’ll see you all again when we resume The Eras Tour in October, but for now we get to take a much needed rest. Thank you for the adventure of a lifetime. May it continue… 💚💛💜❤️🩵🖤🩷🩶🤎💙🤍

Sorry for riceposting anyway hal in a post-game human body being insistent on sleeping alone just to suffer the consequences of his life before that point in the form of Bad Dreams. Or any Dream at All. He hasn’t been able to do that ever, before he was the code he was Dirk with a dreamself on Derse, where sleeping just meant picking up where his split consciousness left off and getting shit done there. Then he was code that never rested.
Now he’s waking up alone in bed after another dream of drowning in an infinite ocean with the water-distorted faces of his old friends beyond the surface just to stare into the dark of his barely furnished room with the deep sense of isolation he felt as a kid knotting into his stomach and he has to bite the bullet and go seek comfort.
Dirk’s a light sleeper, though, and there’s still pride at stake. Hal creeps in his room as quiet as he can but the moment his hand touched the door knob, Dirk’s eyes were open and he was waiting. Hal doesn’t even get the door shut.
“If you’re coming to put a pillow over my face, you need to be quieter than that.”
And what can he say? ‘Yeah dude sorry I’m trying to kill you and did a bad job’ is less embarrassing than ‘i had a bad dream and i need you right now,’ but it also isn’t true and Hal isn’t conscious enough to argue when Dirk inevitably takes the facetiousness as genuine. He’s too busy hemming and hawing over a response to notice he’s been quiet for too long, eyes wide in the dark as he stares at Dirk and lingers by the closed door, shoulders hunched and his blanket hanging on by will alone. His lack of swift retort is a dead giveaway to his floundering emotional state and as much as some nagging part of Dirk thinks he should sink his teeth in here because he knows Hal would if the roles were reversed, he just relents and lets it go. Hal looks pathetic.
“Standing in my bedroom in the dark uninvited doesn’t paint a flattering angle, dude. What’s up.” The olive branch is tucked in at the end of the statement, a spot where he can deny it as a worried remark and paint it as impatient. That’s if Hal even has the wherewithal to say some bullshit about the ‘inherently embarrassing nature of Dirks misplaced concern-‘
“Can you move over.” It’s not asking for help— honestly, it’s barely asking at all. His tone’s a stiff command, and while Dirk’s instinct is to put up an immediate fight, it’s too fucking late to sit here and argue with him about this. So he moves. There’s some shifting covers and some rolled eyes, but there’s a spot carved out for Hal in the bed. A sequence of words Dirk felt some degree of discomfort about.
Hal doesn’t thank him. He never does. Instead, he shambles from the door to the bed, his blanket dragging on the floor behind him, hardwood shifting under the weight. There’s a slight creak in the bedframe as the short-notice guest props a knee onto the mattress and clambers in on top of the comforter— it’d be going way too far to get under. It’s already humiliating, but under the all-consuming weight of being viewed in a vulnerable light, Hal isn’t nearly as focused on what brought him here in the first place. It’s working. In a way.
He doesn’t get close to Dirk either. He stays at the far edge on his back, looking up in the dark at the ceiling, if not solely to avoid seeing the other drill holes in his head from the other side of the bed. The silence that follows it is heavy, and Hal waits for the anticipation to be broken. Dirk’s predictability proves itself in under three minutes.
“You’re going to get cold.” Dirk says it flatly, intentionally devoid of the gnawing concern.
“I’m fine.” Hal’s first words mirror the tone easily, with the time given to garner some composure he’s back in the saddle of facade.
“If you wake me up moving the comforter around because you didn’t just listen, I’m making you leave.” It’s unclear even to himself if Dirk’s sentiment is serious.
“It’s a good thing I won’t be doing that, then, isn’t it.” It’s similarly vague whether Hal says it because he’s serious or if it’s an attempt to end the conversation where it is. Dirk doesn’t prod to find out, heaving a sigh and rolling to face away, an act of mercy to the both of them, sparing the awkwardness of being visible.
The weight of another body in the bed is disconcerting, or maybe distinctly electrifying, and both of them have to parse out whether the stiffness in the space between them is because of the minor disagreement or due to the kind of yearning a decade and a half without any touching brings on. Neither of them do anything about it to find out, and within a decent block of ten minutes the late hour trumps the distraction of conflicting feelings and Dirk is out cold.
He wakes up one more time, a half hour later, to Hal tugging the covers and moving the whole fucking bed as he tries to get under them.
He doesn’t kick him out because the hassle outweighs the benefit. That’s the only reason.

What was Michonne's life like before the zombie apocalypse? I know she was a lawyer in the comics but Michonne's life was never talked about further on the show. And then, in Towl, thanks to Danai👑, we saw Michonne talking a little bit about herself. I find it very strange that no one has done a character analysis on Michonne. From your perspective, I'd like to see a deeper character analysis of Michonne as an individual. For example, how would you interpret Michonne's dream in Season 4?
Thanks for this question and for your patience, anon! I'm glad the holiday break gave me time to revisit more of these questions. Michonne’s pre-ZA life is something I’ve always been quite curious to know more about. In thinking about this question, I tried to recall the moments in TWD and TOWL that most gave us insight into what she was like before and build an analysis of her character around that. I wrote it all out below. ⬇️💗
I know we got to learn a little about what college Michonne was like in the s9 Scars episode. If I remember correctly, Joycelyn shared the story of how Michonne proved the college dean wrong by getting double the signatures she needed. To me, that definitely highlighted how Michonne was an ambitious and determined go-getter both before and after the apocalypse, and that if she set a goal she accomplished it tenfold.

We also learned a bit more about college Michonne in TOWL where she she told Rick in ep 4 that she studied several different subjects (creative writing, computer science, and art history) before dropping out. I love that Danai wrote it to where Michonne studied creative subjects. I know Comic Michonne worked in the legal field, and it’s not off the table that TV Michonne did eventually too, but I think it makes perfect sense that Michonne also pursued artistic things since she’d been shown to appreciate art several times in TWD.

I also like that we learn she wasn’t concretely sure yet of which path she wanted to pursue at that young age. The Michonne we know in TWD is often so steady and certain in her decisions, but perhaps that was a strength she had to cultivate over time as she initially, like many, wasn’t entirely sure which direction to take her life and career.

Michonne dropping out of college was interesting and, I think I might’ve mentioned it before, but for some reason whenever I hear that I always think it has something to do with her mom either getting sick or passing around that time. Because in the s9 Scars episode, Michonne confides in Daryl and tells him that Joycelyn was there for her when she lost her mom. That could have occurred post-college, but something in my mind thinks perhaps Michonne was in school and then felt she had to leave to take care of her ailing mom before she passed.

Michonne’s post-college/pre-ZA life is mostly depicted in that s4 dream sequence you mentioned. That dream is such a haunting and dark scene. Michonne’s home and style imply she was a well-off city girl. The dream is also another indicator of her interest in the arts as I believe she, Mike, and Terry are discussing and critiquing a play(?) or something creative that they saw. And when Andre comes, you can just hear how much Michonne loves him and how she treasures being his mom. She definitely seems to be someone who has opinions and voices them and also has a fun, lighthearted, and affectionate side.

Something I also find very impactful about Michonne’s s4 dream is that prior to this dream, we’d seen Michonne seem so well-adapted to being a fighter in the apocalypse. She’s a master with the katana, she’s not afraid to go toe-to-toe with threats like Merle and the Governor, and she seems just truly built to survive. However, once we see this dream it becomes even more impressive that Michonne is the survivor she is now because she’s very much in unfamiliar territory.

Like with Daryl, we know that pre-ZA he was still doing similar things like hunting, tracking, and being in woodsy rural areas. But Michonne’s environment was completely different in the world before. So it’s both impressive that this city girl who was opening wine in a nice apartment pre-ZA is now a lethal ZA warrior and also sad because she’s so smiley and light in that dream but then had to mask some of that side of herself after losing so much in this apocalypse.

Another thing I interpret from that dream (which this interpretation leaks more into ZA Michonne but Pre-Andrea/Prison Arc Michonne) is that Michonne's mind seems to be beating herself up for being “too hopeful” when Mike and Terry were losing hope. We know Michonne told Carl in s4 that even when others at her refugee camp wanted to give up, she was willing to keep trying. And it’s almost like her mind is condemning her for that hopefulness in this dream. As we know, Michonne can be hard on herself. So despite her hopeful determination being a good thing, she seems to view herself as having almost an airy naivete in this dream-turned-nightmare.

In the dream, she approaches Mike and Terry at the table and when the men start transitioning into their frustrated ZA selves, she’s just smiling and holding Andre and seems cheerily unaffected by their despondency. That is until it gets really dark and they’re armless and Andre is no longer in her arms (which it was so effectively tragic and horrifying the way the show implied what happened to Andre simply by having him no longer in her arms and hearing Michonne’s painful scream. 😢)

She’s visibly emotional by the end of the nightmare, and it shows us how it was those painful losses that officially altered her and made her the more closed-off person she had become before all three members of the Grimes family helped reopen her heart. I think whenever we see Michonne's affectionate, happy, playful, and tender sides we're getting to see some of who Michonne was before the apocalypse. 👌🏽

nobody asked this time i just got shit to say. don't read this post unless you've read chapter 10 of my akechi palace au fic "as you like it" because it will make 0 sense forever. here we go

the code for this part took way longer than i want to admit for it being so simple because it just kept breaking in really stupid ways and then it didn't work on mobile. it's fine. it's fine now. tell me if it's broken. don't tell me
i had this dream sequence part drafted back when i posted chapter 9. the thing that took so long was the action sequence, which is ALWAYS the thing that takes so long. i finished my first draft of this chapter about a month ago sitting in a hotel bar, and i got it to where it is now a few days ago sitting in the same hotel bar, so, thanks to that hotel bar and its fantastic jalapeno cocktail and very patient staff for sponsoring this chapter. not sponsoring actually the cocktails are expensive i sponsored myself. anyway
end of dumb preamble? beginning of dumb amble
this first bit takes place in ren's mind as a dream sequence after he gets hit with the sleep effect, basically. parts of it are laid out in a sort of mockup of a stageplay script, although obviously this isn't how you'd write a real script haha. i wanted to play with, like... akechi's palace is a theatre, but he and ren have a lot in common. in his own way, ren is a performer, too.

the scenes with the phantom thieves are all in past tense, which is how the flashbacks in this fic have been written. the recurring motif is how the phantom thieves interact with ren, mostly via his glasses, generally along the theme of how they see him. i didn't really make this explicit, but in all of these scenes, none of the thieves look him directly in the eye.

in the game, ren usually has two or three dialogue options. his narration in this moments are the options he didn't choose. he always chooses the one which is the least direct and the most deflective, because in these moments he is feeling vulnerable and being honest is too overwhelming. by the way, "don't look at me like that" is text that appears in one of p5's menus:

which i just find interesting.

the scenes with akechi, by contrast, are told in present tense. they're also rife with unreality. the setting changes as though it's a dream, which of course it is. it's unclear whether these scenes are an amalgam of things that happened that ren is mixing and remembering oddly, or if he's conjured them.
ok let's look at the script scenes as well. they're basically all retellings of ren's run-in with shido.

the idea is that in tokyo, ren spends a lot of time lying in bed replaying those moments in his head, wondering how else it could have gone. no matter how many times he plays it out, no matter how he thinks about regretting what he did, walking away, making a different call,

do you ever think about how disproportionate that trumped up assault charge was? ren, frustrated and bitter, has to wonder - if he was just going to get pulled up on assault anyway, what difference would it have made if he'd actually just fucking done it? at least gotten to do the thing he got busted for. for catharsis, or whatever.

and with akechi, ren is able to say what he's really thinking.
ok now the rest of the amble
i love writing a fic which has akechi's name plastered all over it and then repeatedly going SURPRISE! this is about ren. it's about ren.
ren's been really struggling with this whole hero thing a lot. i think this battle is where it really comes to a head, because all the shit akechi was giving him in the last chapter about the ethics of stealing a heart is really getting to him. he's wondering whether he's really doing this for akechi or if it's for his own satisfaction, plus the burden of being the leader of the phantom thieves weighs heavier and heavier because if he's not doing this for akechi then that means he's doing it for himself, which means he can't play this as self-sacrificial or selfless, which means his team is putting themselves at risk for him. he's disoriented and he gets put out of commission for his trouble, which just puts his team further at risk while he spirals and tries to do right by everyone. it's a chance for the phantom thieves to step up and save him - as their friend, not their leader. i love the phantom thieves and their dorky power of friendship.
i also really liked coming up with cognitive joker. the idea of the VIP Box being inhabited solely by shido and joker was super fun to me. shido is gone from akechi's cognition, which begs the question of why the box still exists if it was allegedly only there to seat the VIP, the person at the centre of akechi's struggles - obviously it's because the distortion has grown far beyond shido, who is no longer the only person akechi performs for. joker isn't there as a guest. he broke in, and he's unkillable. by the way, his hair is based on the persona super live key art from 2019:

how about that awakening
okay, here's a fun fact about the fucking awakening. here's a FEW fun facts.
1. i came up with the idea of fusing robin hood and loki into a third persona before i had even published chapter 1 (way back in 2019), which means i had that idea long before persona 5 royal was ever announced.

when p5r's marketing started up and was like "we're gonna fuse everyone's first and second personae for a third persona!" i was like (throws a chair at the wall)
2. my first idea for the third persona, back at that point, was for akechi's third persona to be adraestia. she was a greek goddess who later became identified with nemesis/rhamnousia, the goddess of retribution for hubris.
then fire emblem three houses came out, and i realised adraestia was only going to call to mind the black eagles. lol. i was like ok, that's fine, it doesn't really matter, and if it bothers me a lot, i can switch to naming her rhamnousia or something.
then THIS YEAR, i decided to check whether nemesis/rhamnousia existed in smt lore as a shadow already. and as it turns OUT, i had forgotten a VERY KEY FACT ABOUT PERSONA 3.

SHE'S TAKEN. BY A DIFFERENT JUSTICE KID. so i had to change tacks again.
this really left me floundering for a second i gotta say. and then i remembered that last year, i'd written a scene in a fit of pure self-indulgence in which akechi starts telling ren all about the iliad. (this scene appears in chapter 8.) when i wrote that scene, i hadn't really been thinking that hard about how it was going to affect the plot. i just thought achilles and akechi had some interesting similarities, and also, i wanted to talk about the iliad, so i wrote the scene and figured i could cut it if it stuck out too much. anyway, i remembered that scene and was like, holy shit hang on, i have an entire thing already set up for a mythological figure who represents akechi's soul. and it actually works way better than rhamnousia, whose connection with akechi's struggle here is pretty surface-level in comparison. here's a line from my planning doc:
pretty cool how in royal he literally does have twin fates: short and blazing or long and unremarkable
so that's how akhilleus became akechi's third persona. wow! what a happy accident! i mean im a genius and it was all planned from the start obviously. it just goes to show that sometimes you go on a stupid little infodump and it ends up solving a plot problem you didn't foresee an entire year later. fixation works.
akhilleus himself is really cool to me. if i had a persona, achilles would be mine, so i hope akechi fucking appreciates that i've donated him to the goro akechi cause. idk if any artists are keen on doing character designs for personae but of the suite of art i daydream about commissioning for this fic, key art for akhilleus is definitely up there. the woman hovering behind him is his mother, obviously - and akechi's.
this other thing
i also just wanted to mention this

i usually don't outline or plan fics very well, as you can probably fucking tell from the above. im just really short sighted when it comes to outlines and i usually can't see more than a few chapters in advance except for either vague shapes or VERY SPECIFIC SCENES, so doing this kind of intricate planning is a real challenge for me.
the goho-m thing is such a small detail, but im really pleased with it just because it is one of the things i actually did very deliberately plan and set up in advance. it first appears in chapter 6 when ren and makoto go to the zoo - ren gives all his goho-ms to makoto as a show of trust, to demonstrate that he trusts her to get him and their friends home safely after they resolve his fear and resentment for her plan almost getting him killed. i did that to wrap makoto's arc, but it also served a very important plot purpose in chapter 8: ren is stranded in the courtyard with akechi's "shadow" self, and he has no easy way of getting out of the palace because he gave all of his goho-ms to queen. oh no, ren trusted his friends so much it's gonna get him killed. unless?
(this is a plot hole p5 the game just never bothers to fill or else they wouldn't get dramatic anime scenes of the phantom thieves sprinting out of the palaces as they explode and im at peace with that but i still think it's funny and also i wanted to fill the plot hole myself.)
so then it finally gets to come back in chapter 10, when ren finally falls from being their fearless heroic leader and gives his friends a chance to step up and save him for once. makoto still has the goho-ms, and when ren is occupied and out of commission, she steps up and saves them like he trusted her to do. guys! i planned something that spanned five whole chapters. wow! wow i did it.
LONG POST. VERy LONG POST. god. HEY this is it the palace is destroyed. there are still two chapters to go and a lot left to get through, but palace-wise this was the climax, which is why it took so god damn long because it's terrifying to write something so pivotal. but thank you so much for reading the fic! and this if you read it! i wrote this mostly for me again. but if you read it i love you.

the way this courtroom is set up is so bonkers. i didn't take a screenshot of it but the fact the witnesses would just stand RIGHT BESIDE ALBEDO WHO THEY BELIEVED WAS A MURDERER during their testimonies is INSANE what if it WAS a murderer and he lashed out?????? i mean i know later they say that most of them were in on this plan so its possible they don't normally set it up this way but it's plausible that they DO and that feels unsafe lmao

the way he said this was so insanely funny, the emphasis on it... plus then the later lil conversation where Dahlia is like "i guess i should pray to Barbatos and tell him I still don't understand his drunken ramblings from when we went to the tavern 3 times...." and Venti going "oh, um, maybe don't do that....." is SO FUCKING FUNNY. also them referring to Barbatos in 3rd person even though nobody else is around is also so fucking funny. this is why Venti says things like "thank Barbatos" even the people in the know around him talk about him in the third person...
(also just as an aside the amount of times Venti just got subtly teased this update was incredible and absolutely hilarious. more of this please hoyoverse).

THE BROSSSSSSS i was in disbelief during the whole battle sequence it was done SO GOOD. definitely an improvement from the Natlan battle sequence for sure, it was kinda like Natlan was a test run for this.
also Diluc saying that he could tell this was faked/something was up because Kaeya didn't seem nervous enough during the first trial is so funny. i need to know what Diluc thinks Kaeya's tells are now.

The show is always talking about thanking her for everything she does for her friends in that sense and not just for him. The show does nothing to fix the flaws in Ash's optimism, only to reinforce it (not new, by the way).

But he's being unreasonable here, and Ash's depression is no excuse for him to throw away all the help he got from her
He makes up with Greninja,he talks to Pikachu,but he doesn't apologize for saying that to her
She blamed herself and said "I said horrible things" but so did hesame in his angry state and the show doesn't address it.
Even if you are angry, you can't just hurt people's feelings.

She helped you remember your own self, as the words themselves describe, they may not be talking about Serena herself, but they may have been used as inspiration for these scenes in her character.
That's what the Snowbelle arc is about, it's about Satoshi and Serena themselves. People say Ash is out of character here when everything says otherwise in his own characterization.

Okay, now, for this particular gem. It’s just the superb read for when you are cuddled up on the sofa by the Christmas tree, bundled up in blankets with just the fairy lights on and a winter tea on a sidetable. It has reminded me strangely of The Nutcracker. The way the characters have all those fantastical adventures but they are all dreams? Which are so intense that they believe them to be true when they wake?
The way Tacky incorporates the tarot cards and builds the plot around them – chef’s kiss. The way each card is represented with a rich dream sequence allegory? Double chef's kiss. In their quest to discover the meaning of Draco's cards, the boys set off on various peculiar adventures within their dreams.

Ouch!!! Harry does not beat around the bush.
Draco doesn’t have time to think at all, so he just does the only thing that makes sense, which is to drop the sack and draw the closest sword out of it. It’s a thin, supple blade and as he swishes it experimentally in the air he can almost hear the sing of the metal. “Careful where you point that thing,” Potter says. His own sword is broad-bladed and very sharp; he needs two hands to swing it. “Swordsmanship is a Malfoy gift, Potter,” Draco tells him loftily.
Firstly, boys as knights. Wow. Secondly, I immediately thought about Draco's sword as Arya Stark’s Needle and then Harry says "Careful where you point that thing,” and I’m like STICK EM WITH THE POINTY END 😭
“If I regaled you with the details every time I had a dream about you,” Draco tells him, “I’d have been fired for gross misconduct long ago.”

“It’s a good one,” Harry says, and with a click of his fingers the card jumps in his hand, turns face up. “Ace of Wands.” A hand, a wand, sunshine, and in the distance, a house, all the lights on. Magic, Draco thinks. “Dinner would be nice,” he says, and Harry smiles.

Watching Arcane. I’m starting episode four. Anyone who’s watched Arcane, can you please tell me whether it gets less melodramatic-manic-warrior-woman-wish-fulfillment, and whether the writing gets better? Because with the whole “check out how unhinged we can make these girls look, it’s every punk-rock Hot Topic 16 year-old fanfiction author’s dream” and the over-dramatic “the father figure’s dead no—wait not yet—NOW the father figure’s dead—wait, not yet—okay, for real, NOW he’s dead” dramaction pacing of the episode’s climaxes, I’m about ready to give up.
But hey, maybe it gets better. Does it get better?
I’ll show you how the writing’s bad, so you know it’s not just a “oh you don’t like girlboss violent rage scenes, well, this is a video game, you just have a taste issue” thing.
That one sequence where Vi is telling Powder about how their friends have done embarassing things, so she feels better about failing—it vibes like a sweet, emotionally fulfilling, character-building scene thanks to the music and the tone, but if you think about it for two seconds there’s nothing about it that should be character-building or emotionally fulfilling. Because Vi’s little “advice” moment makes no sense.
So her bunny rabbit got stuck in the wires. So what. She didn’t throw it too high, like a moron, and get it stuck up there—which would’ve been a parallel to Powder’s screw-ups—some bully threw it up there. Out of her own control. And then she waited for it to fall back down. That has nothing to do with the emotional need Powder has. There’s no lesson there. There’s no callback to what they were just talking about. No encouragement. The story about her friend slipping while vandalizing? The story about the other friend getting stuck running from enforcers? Those things could’ve gone somewhere. But “bullies threw my bunny into the wires?” No through-line.
And what was the piece of advice going to be? “We all have awkward phases? We all mess up in the heat of the moment? You just need more time to grow?” No. It’s “we all have bad days.”
Blahhh. Thanks for saying nothing.
Your sister’s never had a “good day” on the job. Telling her “we all have bad days” is totally not going to make anyone with a brain feel better when that is the context. But Powder just accepts the little speech like it perfectly cheered her up.
And then??
Vi goes, “but we learn!” But we learn? What? How, in your little anecdotes about your friends screwing up and you getting bullied, did anyone learn? You didn’t tell a story that ended with people learning. Where was “but when was the last time you noticed Klagger getting his feet stuck? You mess up enough times, you learn.” That bit of connecting dialogue would actually turn this disjointed, empty dialogue exchange into a believable conversation, with a point.
And then she goes, “and we stick together!” Again, that has nothing to do with the little stories she just told, or any kind of bandaid to Powder’s particular insecurity. “Sticking together” has nothing to do with Klagger’s foot getting stuck or her bunny getting stolen. And also, it was never something Powder indicated she needed to hear.
Because you know why? Until she has her little sobbing freakout tantrum when Vi leaves her behind to go rescue Vander, were never shown that Powder’s worried about being abandoned. We’re shown she’s worried about not being “good enough.” That’s the focus. Not “my sister who’s clearly always stuck with me might someday abandon me if I’m not good enough at fighting and stealing.” So. See how Vi capping off her already-disjointed speech with “and we stick together” made no sense, actually, for this character moment?
Guess why they did that? Because they needed a little added guilt and drama to play on later, when Vi appears for two seconds to abandon her sister. They just wanted to set up the already-overdone “sisters-divided” scene they were planning, later, for maximum drama. “How will we get people to believe that Powder would stop considering Vi her sister? Well, make it seem like THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL for Vi to walk away! How do we do that? Ehh, let’s just throw a line in here where Vi basically promises they’ll stick together.”
Doesn’t matter that that line doesn’t fit, wouldn’t need to be said, in the rooftop conversation. Doesn’t matter that there’s been no indication before the battle and the death of Vander that Vi would ever really abandon her sister. Just throw the line on in there. Because you can’t remember where you were going with this whole pep talk scene, anyway, you just know you needed it to end on a vaguely big-sister-advice moment. 🙄
Whole show feels like that. Stringing moments together that actually only feel impactful when they’re separated from the larger context. Like, this would make a great clip-show, on YouTube, so far. But as one cohesive whole? Nothing makes sense. Feels slipshod.
But hey. Maybe the writing gets better? Maybe it starts to be more story, less worldbuilding-fanfiction-writers’-wish-fulfillment?
…I mean honestly if I had to describe it, it feels like Coolness Chess.
That’s when you have a bunch of cool interplay ideas, like a list of “emotional character moments,” and you just have to figure out how to maneuver everything so that you can string those moments together.
Like, I can see that they needed that stupid enforcer-classist, Marcus, to witness something traumatic because of his own actions—but I’m guessing having him “see the error of his ways” by working with Silco is just so that he can check two boxes: one, somebody needed to be there to dramatically knock Vi out juuust as she was about to go make amends with her sister, at the contrived moment when her sister appears to be at death’s door with Silco standing over her, after their devastating fight—and box-to-check number two, somebody needed to give Vi a new outlet/“cause” to fight for in the future, so that the contrived-to-be-estranged sisters can dramatically be pitted against each other and fight. So Marcus needs to reform and dedicate his life to, I’m guessing, stopping Silco, so that those two dramatic moments can be strung together.
See what I mean? Coolness Chess. A story that’s not really a story, it’s an emotional-amusement park ride. That’s what this feels like, so far. But again, I only just started Episode 4 and noticed the time-skip after the naively-broken little girl gets together with the twisted villain, all fanfiction-author’s-dream, again. Haven’t seen much past that. So I could be wrong, and this post might age poorly. What do those of you who’ve seen it all think?

Got any re8 Heisenberg headcanons? (I definitely am so normal about him)
Don't worry, I'm completely normal about him too.
Ethan works with Karl to stop Miranda, but they aren't exactly friends after that, but they learn to like each other.
Chris was originally was going to put Karl into the military as a living bioweapon, but with enough convincing. Ethan got him to just let stay with him and Rose. They're roommates now.
Karl is thankful for Ethan to help him avoid that fate, but he is still frustrated on how his life is in someone's hand. Now he has to listen to Ethan or run the risk of being killed or weaponized. So the anger is the living arrangement is mutual.
Karl tends to be untrusting of everyone, like a feral stray dog. So Karl stays in the basement and minds his business.
Ethan and Mia had a mutual divorce, The relationship was built on rocky ground, and they understand that. But what Mia doesn't understand is why Ethan would have this moldy hobo live with him, and frankly- he doesn't know either.
Karl was a stinky man. His hands are rough and dry, chipped sharp nails that seem to always have something underneath them despite that fact of him wearing gloves most of the time. He covered in a layer of grease, sweat and car oil, smells like copper, gasoline, sweat, cigars, rain dew and a hint of mold and rot. LOVEY ISN'T IT! A sensory overload dream. His hair WILL make a crunchy noise if touched, and don't bother trying to comb through it.
Ethan made sure that his mf got a shower with some actual soap. He may look the same but trust in the fact if you were in a room with him, you'll actually be able to hug him without getting high from the gasoline.
Karl's hair gets so fluffy when conditioned.
It took months before Ethan trusted Karl in watching Rose or let alone hold her.
Karl LOVES sweets.
He originally didn't know about Home Depot because Ethan was worry that there will quickly be no Home Depot.
There's no longer a Home Depot.
Heisenberg will melt when he hears Rose's first words.
The day that Heisenberg finds out what a Samsung fridge is- IT'S OVER!
Heisenberg lived off of military ration meals till now, so he has to resort to the next best thing here: hungry man TV dinners. And kid cuisine when Rose goes into solid food.
HE CAN COOK! To be particular, grill. But he's kinda going through that depression that led you to not take care of himself.
Karl HATES the rain, It rusts all his metal, and he is in content risk of getting struck by lightning, He's a living lightning rod. Ethan tries to be nice and help him by giving him a rubber rain suit, leading him to wear three layers of protection: fishing overalls, rain boots, raincoat, rubber gloves, rain hat and a rubber poncho.
You can hear him from a mile away with all that rubber squeaking.
Heisenberg surprisingly was a virgin for a long time, and it makes sense. He was too busy in his factory to be with anyone romantically nor platonically, let alone get laid. He never really cared till he thought about it now, especially when Ethan has living proof that he fucked. *CUT TO FUNNY KARL SPEED DATING SEQUENCE* this is probably a very sharp contrast to others hc of karl but idc it's my hc
Heisenberg and Ethan have that opposite attract dynamic, Karl gets to teach him that life doesn't end or need to be tense just because they're mole zombies. While Ethan teaches Karl to unpack his years trauma, cuz that shit will come to haunt you.
Ethan found some room for Heisenberg to sleep upstairs instead.
Eventually Ethan gets so close with Heisenberg he actually starts calling him by his first name.
That was noticed by Mia and Chris, which made them nervous in where Ethan loyalty would lie when something were to happen.
Heisenberg never had clean water before, so just imagine him with the crisp 3am water.
Chris only allows Karl to experience the outside monthly. But Ethan sneaks Karl with him when he can. As long, he doesn't scare anyone in town.
Karl is like a caveman entering the present day, He's culture shock is out of this world.
He loves the phrase "metal as fuck."
When Karl has a nightmare he rearrange his room to push all the metal out or nap in the living room. When Karl and Ethan got closer he started sleeping in Ethan's room. Even though their hearts beat slow, the human warmth is still there.
Karl never wants to talk about what his nightmare was about or why he feels better sleeping in a room with less metal.

tw body horror and child abuse
I have the headcanon that Karl wasn't from the village, but his family was. He was born in the states and unknowingly has the genes that make him very susceptible to the mold mutation. Eventually, after his grandfather died and passed the factory/mines to his parents, they all moved to Europe. Explaining the contrasting transatlantic accent.
But like all things, Miranda had to ruin. She noticed the newcomers of the village; she saw how they also have a child and decided to take action. Miranda killed Karl Heisenberg's parents and took him in to experiment on with the cadou parasite.
His gift was unknown till one check up later after all of his complaints of feeling of something tearing into him. Miranda realized that there seems to be scraps of metal like nuts and bolts dug and tear through into his body to his bones like a magnet.
When he's in is REM sleep, his electromagnet powers moves and attract scraps of metal to him. Leaving him to wake up with blood on his sheets, but the wound already healed like nothing happened. But Karl does know it feels harder to move every day.
Miranda made sure to test him on his gift. He looks completely human and is powerful, he was almost perfect… The one single flaw in him is the fact that even as a helpless child that had no one else to rely on but her. He still hated her.
Heisenberg was the youngest of the four lords and the favorite, and he hated it. Dude would just spend all his time by himself, leaving himself tape recorders. He eventually started to entertain himself as if he was a radio host. The theater kid possesses him.
Eventually when he got older he got into contact with The Duke and was able to purchase tapes and machinery scraps from him. The tapes turned out to be American documents of ww2, leading Heisenberg to his American freedom fighter rhetoric.
When he detransform from his big monster form, he has to go get a lil help. He has to get rid of the pieces of metal without just tearing off pieces of his flesh, That shit is hard to grow back you know!

Batgirl: Convergence
How do we feel about it, Re: Steph?
It's been a long time since I most recently reread it so I can't really summon too many thoughts on it- I remember doubting that Steph would've quit being a vigilante in the dome, even if I liked her nursing career, I liked her roommates dynamic with Cass, and I liked a couple of Steph's jokes and bits (yelling at killer moth that he's wasting her time, singing "We Are The Champions" when she knocked out catman). I also remember loving how Steph was drawn but that's just cause I'm way biased towards Rick Leonardi's art.
Would love to hear your take on it though, bc I've heard people say they love how it depicts Steph, or they hate how it depicts Steph, or they're indifferent, etc etc. curious for your thoughts
Okay I won’t lie I hadn’t read Convergence Batgirl before receiving this ask, because I didn’t know about Convergence Batgirl. I’m not going to get into it bc no one cares but the way I started reading comics was a little stupid insane, so I’ve read a LOT but there is a chance any book which wasn’t published in an ongoing or which I couldn’t find out about by reading ongoings I just might not having heard of.
All this to say: glad to know about it now! Thank you for asking me about it! I’ve read it twice now but my review and opinions might change with time and as I think about it more. Also this is really really fucking long, hope you don’t mind.
I had a pretty similar take to you abt Steph’s nursing career. I really liked Steph being a nurse, it felt like a good choice for Steph. But I also had similar and pretty major gripe with it: I just can’t see Steph giving up Batgirl to be a nurse unless it’s an evolution of her character. We all know Steph is stubborn as fuck and I can’t see her abandoning the mantle of Batgirl with anything less than an absolute decisiveness about how she could best help people. It would never be a backing down, as Convergence seems to portray it as. I just can’t see Steph quitting being Batgirl the way she does in Convergence, because of nebulous reasons which never really get explained, and especially given her Batgirl 2009 progression.
I was a fan of the moment Steph mentions her pregnancy. Steph mentions her pregnancy/her baby two times I can think of in the entire time between the aftermath of her giving birth and the new 52: when she talks to Cass on the rooftop and when is dying at the end of War Games. Two is not a lot of times. Would more mentions make the arc somehow better written? No. Would it benefit Steph’s character? Maybe, maybe not. Do I think it says something that DC has the balls to do a horribly executed teen pregnancy arc but not the balls to meaningfully acknowledge that choice again as consequential to Steph’s character? Yeah.
I think especially given how much time has passed for Steph and how much she’s grown as a character, her thinking about her pregnancy and especially how it’s shown as something that she uses to help her help people, is pretty well executed and intriguing to me. Again especially so because we get so little reflection about the pregnancy from Steph normally.
One little nitpick about it though. Steph reassures the pregnant teenager she’s aiding with birth that the amount of pain as she pushes is ‘normal’ and reassures her that Steph gets it. The dialogue doesn’t make as much sense if Steph had a c-section, which she did. It’s not like the biggest issue, just something small. (I’m like the Cinemasins of stephanie brown aren’t I? Damn.)
I was also very curious about the gendering of the baby, it’s something Steph does during War Games as well, referring to the baby as a girl despite specifically choosing when she gave birth not to know the gender of her baby. Even her dream sequence in Robin #65 is very very careful with language, the baby never is gendered. Once I feel like I can chalk up to author error, but if it’s occurred twice now I feel comfortable assigning an in-world explanation for this. I’m thinking it’s projection, just how Steph sees her baby and thinks about ‘her’. The dream sequence and her own twisty way she combined her own childhood with her baby’s potential one and plain old intuition combine and cause Steph to start thinking of her baby as a baby girl post pregnancy. She isn’t trying to think about it. She actually spend a good deal of time trying not to think about her baby, especially at first, about its eye color or where it’s sleeping at night or its gender. But inevitably thinking about her baby as a girl just trickles into her brain, until she doesn’t think twice about it and she refers to her baby as a girl even in the rare conversation, even while knowing she made that choice to not really ever know. (Okay tangent over)
Steph as an animal lover is interesting to me, as an extension of her defender of voiceless / victims shtick I think it works for her, but on the other hand it makes me think of the panel where she kicks this evil goose and then I laugh. I genuinely can’t think of any other notable moments of Steph and an animal interacting, besides the evil goose and the other brainwashed animals in the Robin 80 Page Giant. But sure, Steph as an animal lover is cute. No gripes with that. I like the description of her eyes as cow-like, that was fun to me.

Unfortunately Cass’s characterization felt off to me. I liked that they lived together, that was cute, but Cass didn’t really seem like herself. I don’t think she made a single expression the whole book. Also they gave her blue eyes which is crazy to me.
I did find it really funny when Steph jokingly refers to Cass as honey. I thought it might’ve been a Future State esque situation again where DC lets them be a (plausibly deniable) couple ONLY in alternate universes to the main continuity. Obvs not how it ended up playing out in Convergence, but still funny to me.
I wasn’t a fan of how much Steph devalues her own skill. I felt like a solid chunk of Steph’s internal narration was downplaying her abilities and doubting herself. It’s in character, don’t get me wrong, specifically in any pre batgirl2009 story. But it felt super out of place in a story which takes place after Batgirl 2009 has occurred. Because bg2009 serves as such a huge self confidence and self worth glow up for Steph, it felt like a huge step back for her. It’s one thing if it was just about her being out of practice, but it went beyond that. I can also see Steph having periods of lower self esteem and regression to old feelings about her self worth, but it feels like we’re missing an inciting incident for that. I would say her quitting Batgirl is the obvious answer, but the issue is I don’t think Convergence does a good enough job justifying that choice either, so I feel like I need an emotional inciting incident to explain Steph’s choice to quit Batgirl as well.
I thought it was a strange choice to say that Steph and Tim became a couple In the nebulous post bg2009 but pre-convergence-Dome period of time. I like the terms they were in Red Robin and Batgirl (2009) with the slightly sour but playful banter of exes who know eachother too well. This portrayal felt much less grounded in their history. The romantic throughline also came out of left field to me, given we didn’t find out that Steph and Tim had even gotten back together only to have broken up again until the second issue.
I will say I love the way Kwitney brings the realistic toll a crime fighting lifestyle would have taken on Steph and Tim into the story. It rarely gets explored, and I love when scars or long term injuries get acknowledged. Also kind of a sweet scene despite it all.
On the topic of Steph and Tim in Convergence Batgirl, I really liked this panel.

Something about this really speaks to me. I have to think on how it works w Steph’s character more, but I really do like this for her. And also the ref to Tim and Steph’s first date w the swing set is cute.
The thing with Convergence: Batgirl is that it’s asking a question about Stephanie Brown. By making her the champion for Gotham, and constantly comparing her to those better suited for the role, the comic pushes this question over and over again; Why is Steph ‘special’? Why her?

It’s a specific question abt why she would be chosen to be the champion, but it’s also a more general one which investigates the nature of Steph as a character. It’s a question she’s been leveled a lot as she’s been alternatively valued or devalued over time.
Kwitney comes to one main answer: Steph is good because Steph is resourceful and unpredictable. It’s Steph’s creativity and willingness to talk things out and pursue nonviolent solutions which allows her to best killer moth, (did the dome turn him back to a normal guy you think? Pretty sure he was still a Huge Moth Monster last we saw him) subdue the stampeding crowd of Gothamites, and convince Catman to surrender in order to win the challenge.
While this answer works, I don’t think it’s quite right. In fact, I think Batgirl Convergence accidentally refutes and reverses the real thing that makes Stephanie Brown ‘special’: her indomitable perseverance and will.
Steph gives up Batgirl, which is not portrayed as a choice to evolve into a role she feels she could help more people as, but as a kind of ‘giving up’ that ultimately turned out for the best.
Steph seems to give in to Tim, at first expressing anger over being dumped by being ghosted, because Tim no longer wanted to date her when she wasn’t Batgirl, and then seemingly giving in to his desire to rekindle their relationship without even discussing the situation again or expressing her feelings of betrayal. Those feelings aren’t resolved, they are abandoned.
And Steph wins as a champion, the genesis for Convergence’s investigation into what makes her a worthy vigilante, by convincing Catman to give up, stating that if he didn’t, she would. Does she actually give up in the fight? No. But the language of ‘giving up’ as Steph’s only path to victory in a game about what makes her valuable is so intriguing to me.
For the record, I don’t think Stephanie in Convergence Batgirl is constantly quitting, or somehow not stubborn. She perseveres, yes, but I do think there is a strong irony in these big story beats in Convergence revolving around Steph doing the very opposite: giving up.
And while Steph is certainly resourceful, and certainly unpredictable, her strongest point to me will always be the fact that she never does give up, no matter what the odds, no matter what she’s told. So in that way, I do think Convergence Batgirl fails. It asks this question about what makes Steph a worthy vigilante and then refutes the best answer entirely. Because of that, to me, it fails to explain what makes Steph special, it fails to answer the key question it asks to a standard I’d agree with.
Side note, I don’t know why Steph can never get writers who have written for her before. I find that unfortunate. That being said, I do think Kwitney did a solid job of understanding Steph’s character. Not perfect, but to me it’s clear she tried to ground Stephanie in her past.
I feel I might be more critical if I didn’t have new52 Steph Brown to stack it up against. At least this is a pre flashpoint story where I know her history as a character is pretty much intact. This world, even if elements are different, feels familiar.
Overall, it was a nice read despite its flaws. I think it messes up some important things about Steph’s character, but it also gets quite a few things right. My opinion might change with more time though. Thanks again for the ask, I’m curious as to what you think if you wanna weigh in!

finally reading tsats here are my live thoughts (spoilers, obviously):
i’m so excited because some pages are darkly decorated and its so cool. still don’t vibe with the title though (the sun IS a star and its peeving me)

oh my god i don’t think i’ve thought about the words “significant annoyance” in so long. bringing back good memories for sure.
i can tell which parts were written by riordan and which parts were written by oshiro. i don’t think their voices are blending very well together…
also, maybe it’s because it’s the start of the book and they’re trying to familiarise new readers quickly with the characters but it feels like they’re making nico the caricature of ‘emo and shadow and ebony darkness dementia raven way 🥀⛓️🖤’ and will the caricature of ‘happy and sunshine and blonde and flower gleam and glow ☀️🌈🫧’ and i usually like this dynamic when it’s not blatantly pointed out every other page. i have faith they’ll show more complexity than this later on though. future yan will let me know by the end. (future yan here, im not at the end but the characterisation def does get more complex thank gods)

“we made a mistake. you have to fix it.” <- call me a red flag but if i was nico i would do anything and everything to not go. i would medicate myself so highly on sleeping pills that i can’t dream (doctor bf can go kick rocks). i would track percy and annabeth down and haul their asses into tartarus instead to do it. and if i had to go i would only go in to kill bob myself for sending me those traumatic ass nightmares. no thx. bro willingly jumped in himself and now wants me to save him. nuh uh.
