Very helpful thread made for those walking the picket lines by an EMT in Florida:
Tumblr media
(screen shots from here on out. Too many images to put in one post. Sorry for the dark mode switch ahead of time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: a tweet thread made by @TheMaryGirls on July 18th, 2023 that reads in its entirety (though combined where appropriate and tweet numbers removed for condensing):
This is for the strikers everywhere since I'm nowhere near a picket line. This is the least I can do:
I am an EMT in Florida, one of the hottest states in the country on a regular basis. These are things you can do to protect yourself from the heat
1. Water
Water is great, your body needs it to live. You can go longer without food than you can without water. It's vital. If you become too dehydrated you can lapse into something called Hypovolemic shock which is the most dangerous form of shock because, usually, by the time you realize something is wrong, you're already in a bad position.
When you sweat, you're not just losing water. You're also losing salt, potassium, chloride, magnesium, & calcium. To combat this, you should drink something with electrolytes.
You can also eat a banana in order to avoid cramping that can occur with the loss of potassium. You don't want to be the one doing the Charley Horse Hustle on the line when people have phone cameras. You can also eat fruit and veg with high water content. They helps.
A word of caution about ice water. I know the idea of a big bottle of ice water sounds great when you're sweating your balls off on the line but NO! That can be dangerous. Your body temperature is up due to the heat. You chug a bottle of ice water like you used to do with Smirnoff Ice in college, you'll regret it. Ice water will cause your body temperature to drop which fraks up your homeostasis. You can experience stomach craps, fainting, and, on some weird occasions, cardiac arrest. Face planting on the pavement isn't cute.
One way you CAN use ice water safely is by soaking a t-shirt or towel and putting it on your head to help cool you off. Also, cold rags around the wrists can also cool you down. You've seen construction workers with the t-shirts on their heads? This is why.
2. Whole body
If you get blisters on your feet, you need to treat them. Also, don't force pop them, you're just asking for trouble. When they rupture, they need to be cleaned with soap and water (no alcohol or peroxide) and protected. Band-Aids won't really help here.
Band-Aids can easily slip off and give bacteria a chance to move in and really get gross. Liquid bandage is the better option. It's waterproof but it does sting when you put it on so be warned.
If you experience muscle cramps on the line, you need to deal with them. This is your bodies way of telling you something is wrong. Sit down, drink something. Stretching before picketing can also help prevent them. Let's be honest, as writers, we sit. A LOT.
Going from a cave dwelling hermit to bright sunlight and exercise is going to piss your entire system off. Icy Hot and hot baths will be your friend.
3. Dehydration warning signs.
Muscle cramps
light headed
headaches
feeling very thirsty
dark urine
urinating less often
feeling tired
dry mouth, lips, or tongue
skin tenting
confusion
That's all that I can think of at the moment.
GO FUCK EM UP!!!!!!!

Every word of this is good advice, but, as a former desert-dweller, there’s something I need to add: dehydration makes you stupid. It can literally prevent you from being able to figure out the source of your problems is dehydration.

Got it, thank you…follow-up question: what’s the best hangover breakfast? (Or do you not even get hungover?)
I do not get hungover, however I do know that hangovers are generally caused by a combination of dehydration and decreased blood flow to the brain.
Foods high in water content such as fresh fruits and vegetables are always a good option. Potassium and iron are also beneficial for someone with a hangover. Foods such as banana, sweet potato, spinach, and citrus fruits are good options.

National Banana Split Day
In our opinion, this is easily one of the best parts of summer or any time of year where you like to indulge in an ice cream treat! It blends together the perfect flavor of bananas with the rich sweet flavor of the ice cream, topped with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, strawberries, hot fudge, and anything else your heart can imagine! National Banana Split Day celebrates this amazing treat and a perfect excuse to indulge in it!
Learn about National Banana Split Day
National Banana Split Day is exactly what you expect to be: it is a day to celebrate this amazing dessert. It gives you the perfect opportunity to tuck into this sweet treat. After all, who doesn’t love a delicious banana split? You can enjoy one of these desserts (or several) and you don’t need to feel guilty about it! Music to our ears. Have fun trying out your own banana split inventions. You won’t regret it!
Fun facts about banana splits
Did you know that there was a World Record set in Selinsgrove, PA, for the longest banana split? This stretched 4.5 miles, and it consisted of 33,000 bananas, as well as 150 gallons of chocolate and 2,500 gallons of ice cream.
The popularity of the banana split is often credited to Walgreens drug stores, which are operated by Charles Rudolph Walgreens. The store promoted the banana split as their premium dessert, which caused a lot of customers to try the dessert when they may have otherwise note been interested in it.
When banana splits first came onto the scene, they were sold for 10 cents. This may not seem like a lot of money. However, at the time, it was sold at twice the price of sundaes.
Health benefits of bananas
While bananas may be covered in cream and a few other bad things when enjoyed as a banana split, bananas themselves offer a number of different health benefits. This can make you feel better about eating a banana split! Bananas, for example, are an excellent source of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6, in turn, provides a number of great benefits. This helps us to maintain a healthy nervous system, remove unwanted chemicals from your kidneys and liver, metabolize amino acids, metabolize fats and carbohydrates, turning them into energy, and produce red blood cells.
The good news does not end there. There are a number of other benefits that are associated with bananas. This includes potassium, which meets around 10 percent of your potassium intake. It also contains manganese, which helps to protect your skin through the creation of collagen, as well as protecting other cells from free radical damage. Bananas are also a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports brain health through the production of serotonin, which impacts our moods, sleep cycle, and experiences of pain and stress. Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen, absorb iron better, and protect your body against tissue and cell damage.
History of National Banana Split Day
The Banana Split, surprisingly, has a very definite history, and we can pinpoint its origins to one David Evans Stickler in 1904, where he was serving as an apprentice pharmacist at Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Like most pharmacies of the day, it had a soda fountain attached, and it was in this pharmacy that he invented the banana split, which quickly became a hit with the students at Saint Vincent College nearby. Word of mouth made it spread like wildfire, and it soon became an American institution, before going global.
In 2004 Latrobe hosted the 100th anniversary of the invention, the same year that it was certified as the birthplace of the banana split by NICRA (National Ice Cream Retailers Association). It also became the home of the Great American Banana Split Celebration, a huge event with food and events for everyone to take part in.
Of course, like with all great inventions, there is some contention about its origins (unless you ask NICRA). Wilmington, Ohio claims that it was invented there in 1907 in response to a slump in the ice cream business thanks to the winter season.
How to celebrate National Banana Split Day
Like we need to tell you how to celebrate National Banana Split Day! Grab yourself an entire bushel of bananas, split them and circle a bowl with them, and fill that puppy with ice cream! Then top with whipped cream, nuts, hot fudge, strawberry syrup, and anything else you can imagine, and sprinkle liberally with maraschino cherries.
A bit much? Alright, if you’re going to keep this deliciousness to yourself, maybe what you need is to enjoy it quietly at home. But for a special twist drizzle it with high proof alcohol and ignite it, because hot and cold are great companions.
Another fun way to celebrate National Banana Split Day is by gathering all of your loved ones and having a “banana split off.” You can all have fun creating different takes on this classic dessert. Make sure you have a range of different toppings available and allow people to go wild with their own banana split inventions. This is a great way to spend time with the people you love. After all, it is always fun to do something different, isn’t it?

Maybe you've answered this question before, sorry, I'm new here lol
Clouds kiddo would have Sephiroth genes too, right? Even if Cloud was totally purified of Jenova by the holy water, wouldn't the S-cells be more permanent?
I actually haven’t answered this question and I’m glad you asked! And I’m sorry but I’m about to make this answer so fucking complicated. As always you have the option of reading either my shorter or longer answer XD for some ease of reading, I’ll make the more important points orange/green.
Short answer: yes but no. Claudia does have mild enhancements but she does not have pure S-cells, so the effects aren’t large. Cloud’s mako content affects her more than the S-cells since his mako enhancements affect him altogether, so the effects of that are passed down to Claudia too. Cloud’s J-cells and S-cells are neutralized, so by the time she was born, their effects were diluted to the point they have very little effect on her makeup.
Long (and I mean very long) answer: My personal headcanons + how Gaia’s lifestream seems to work bring a lot of ways to interpret procreation and birth in the world of FF7 and boy oh boy have I thought hard about it. I've decided to approach it from an almost purely biological standpoint. This is very complicated so feel free to ignore it altogether and take the short answer as is.
Here’s my logic:
If we want to get sciency on the beat, remember that each parent passes down 23 chromosomes, one set each, and that these two sets combine into a pairing. Information is exchanged between these chromosomes yaddah yaddah they combine and that’s important. Combination means that new genes/traits are made, some things coming through from one parent and some things becoming a trait neither parents have.
Now my personal theory on enhancements is this: cells are digestive but mako is prosthetic (stay with me here).
When I say digestive let me put it this way: say you eat a banana with peanut butter. Bananas are a good source of potassium, and peanut butter is a good source of protein. Once you’ve digested them, boom, your body has potassium and protein and now circulates that through your system. Your cells take those nutrients and use them in specific ways to generate energy for your body. However, they’re nutrients, so they wear off.
Now we get to J-cells and S-cells. Jenova, as we know her, is essentially a parasite. Meaning that once she attaches to something, she doesn’t let go. Cells from other creatures, when in the human body, would usually be digestive, but the human body is incapable of cycling her out of the system. So she sticks around instead, both staying a separate entity and passing traits on to the cells she is attached to. This makes Jenova-related enhancements permanent.
NOW. Sephiroth has had J-cell aspects since birth because his mother passed them on, yes? So J-cell traits are in his cells as well, meaning that Sephiroth’s cells, when injected into other creatures, also stick instead of being digested. They both remain separate entities and affect the cells they are attached to. I have more headcanons around that, including that I don't believe that those traits by themselves made him vulnerable to Jenova, but I'm not going to touch on it today
So now that that’s established, what do I mean by mako being a prosthetic? While cells of other creatures are broken down by the body and processed, a prosthetic is different. It directly changes the way the body works because people all have their own personal lifestream; extra mako isn’t supposed to be there and the body knows this, hence why people get mako-sick. Due to this, it is very important that mako be administered carefully and gradually to allow the body time to adjust (Cloud's long term mako paralysis, case and point). Mako addition altogether alters how their body operates. It’s a body-wide prosthetic. However, sort of like a robotic prosthetic that can take orders from the nervous system, the body adjusts and eventually accepts the extra energy, taking control of the ‘extra limb.’
Now onto Cloud. Cloud has both direct J-cells and pure S-cells by my understanding. He has these attached to his own cells for a very long time and while part of him, they're technically still separate entities. His body can't digest it etc etc, I've covered this. Holy water is the game changer, and this is the biggest part: my theory is that holy water does not neutralize J-cell effects, it neutralizes J-cells' ability to attach. This allows the body to attack J-cells properly, breaking them down and cycling them out.
So post-AC, Cloud no longer has pure J or S cells. These aren't even a factor in him having a child anymore, and he definitely wouldn't have been comfortable having a child otherwise. But remember parasites, even being separate entities, affect their hosts. Cloud has lingering effects on his chemical makeup.
These lingering effects are what Claudia gets, and due to the dilution that happens in the combination of parental chromosomes, these effects on her genes are so minuscule they basically aren't there.
Cloud's mako content is another thing. Mako affects the entire body, so this is far more of a factor in Claudia's biochemical makeup than anything else. However, I think if you dive too deep into mako's effects you start getting into metaphysical matters more than biological matters so this is harder for me to delve into. Still, I'll put it like this and then round this long fucking answer out:
Claudia also has something Cloud and other SOLDIERs didn't have the benefit of: growing. SOLDIERs received their enhancements all at once but Claudia's body develops into her enhancements over time. So rather than popping out of the womb with a shitton of enhancements just raring to go, because Cloud's body has fully processed his mako enhancements to be part of him, her energy density grows with her. Her threshold isn't as high as Cloud's of course, but she has far more energy potential than a normal human. Her body's enhancements grow as she grows rather than hitting her all at once like a true SOLDIER enhancement. Her hearing happened to be the first to come in and poor baby's original home was just a place where she could be easily overstimulated.
There are many things I’ll be exploring about Claudia so I promise promise promise you’ll get more details on how being Cloud’s daughter affects her! I’m far from done with her character 😁
Thank you thank you thank you for the ask and so sorry for this behemoth of an answer to what was...probably a simple question XD My mind works in very weird ways LOL

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PLANTAINS
While plantains are similar to bananas, they are considered more vegetable than fruit due to their high starch content. Plantains are often cooked before serving and are used in many savory dishes much like a potato and very popular in Western Africa and the Caribbean. Plantains are often fried or baked, may be known as “cooking bananas” and are a rich source of fiber, vitamins A, C, and B-6, plus the minerals magnesium and potassium.
Plantains are high in carbohydrates, low in fat and provide a number of health benefits:
1. Rich Source of Potassium – One cup of plantain provides 20 percent of your recommended daily amount of potassium, making plantains one of the most potassium-rich foods available. Snacking on plantains or offering them as a side dish are both delicious ways to reach your daily potassium goals and help naturally reduce high blood pressure.
2. Regulates Digestion – Plantains are high in fiber which plays a significant role in keeping you regular. One cup of plantain provides 20 percent of the fiber recommended daily. Fiber also makes you feel full, which can help with weight control.
3. Reduces Harmful Free Radicals – Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant that fights free radical damage. One serving of plantains provides 35 percent of the vitamin C needed per day, making it one of the best vitamin C foods around.
4. Boosts Your Immune System – Plantains provide 35 percent of your daily recommended amount of vitamin A plus 35 percent of vitamin C, both help control your immune response, fighting illness and infection.
5. Promotes Healthy Brain Function – Plantains provide 25 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, supports important neurotransmitters that carry information from one brain cell to another and also supports the production and release of hormones like serotonin and norepinephrine, which keep moods stable.
6. Rich Source of Magnesium – Plantains provide 15 percent of your daily requirement of magnesium, which is especially important because magnesium supports over 300 biochemical processes and reactions in your body. Magnesium supports calcium absorption, which can slow or reverse osteoporosis and also lowers your risk of type 2 diabetes by controlling blood glucose levels.

In this article, we'll provide you with a simple recipe that packs a protein punch!
The Perfect Ingredients
Before we dive into the recipe, let's take a look at the key ingredients that will make your smoothie rich in protein:
1 cup of Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein, offering around 20 grams per cup. It also adds a creamy texture to your smoothie.
1 scoop of protein powder: Choose a high-quality protein powder that suits your dietary needs and preferences. This will give your smoothie an extra protein boost.
1 cup of milk or dairy-free alternative: Milk adds more protein to your smoothie, but if you prefer a dairy-free option, there are plenty of plant-based alternatives available.
A handful of spinach: Spinach is not only packed with vitamins and minerals but also contains a decent amount of protein.
1 ripe banana: Bananas not only add natural sweetness to your smoothie but also provide a good source of potassium and carbohydrates for energy.
A tablespoon of nut butter: Choose your favorite nut butter to add some healthy fats and additional protein to your smoothie.
A handful of ice cubes: To make your smoothie refreshing and chilled.
Optional: Additional toppings like chia seeds, flaxseeds, or sliced fruits for added nutrition and flavor.
The Simple Steps
Now that we have all the ingredients ready, let's blend them together to create your high protein smoothie:
Add all the ingredients to a blender.
Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy.
If the consistency is too thick, add a little more milk or water and blend again.

Optional: Garnish with a sprinkle of chia seeds or a few slices of your favorite fruit.
Variations and Tips
While the basic recipe is great on its own, there are endless possibilities to customize your high protein smoothie. Here are some variations and tips to consider:
Try different flavors of protein powder such as chocolate, vanilla, or berry.
Experiment with different fruits like berries, mangoes, or peaches to add natural sweetness and more vitamins.
If you prefer a thicker smoothie, use frozen fruits or add a spoonful of oats or a scoop of Greek yogurt.
For an extra boost of fiber, add a tablespoon of flaxseeds or chia seeds.
If you're following a vegan or dairy-free diet, use plant-based protein powder and non-dairy milk alternatives like almond milk or coconut milk.
If you want to increase the calorie content, consider adding a tablespoon of coconut oil or avocado.
Don't be afraid to get creative and try new combinations of ingredients. The possibilities are endless!
Conclusion
With this simple recipe, you can easily make a high protein smoothie that will not only satisfy your taste buds but also provide your body with the protein it needs. Feel free to experiment with different ingredients and flavors to find your perfect combination. Enjoy your nutritious and delicious creation!
