The president of a new Columbia Law School group formed to combat rising antisemitism on campus told Jewish Insider that its adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism played a role in the Law School Student Senate’s vote to reject it as a recognized university group.

“A group of students were strongly opposed to our formation from the very beginning,” Marie-Alice Legrand, president of the Law Students Against Antisemitism, recalled, noting that some condemned its use of the State Department-adopted IHRA definition.

“They have accused us of using that definition to silence free speech. We have assured them that is not our mission, we want to educate,” she continued.

Twenty-three of approximately 33 senators voted against the Law Students Against Antisemitism group in an anonymous vote on Jan. 23, the Columbia Spectator reported, noting that nine organizations have requested recognition this year, and Law Students Against Antisemitism is the only group that has not been approved.

Before the senate meeting, where LSAA presented, individuals referring to themselves as “Concerned Jewish Students at CLS,” who identify as “Jewish pro-Palestine students,” signed a letter to the senators.

According to Legrand, the individuals printed out copies of the letter and brought them to the meeting to “urge the Senate to decline to charter,” raising their concern that “LSAA has adopted a pernicious and insidious definition of antisemitism.”

In the letter, a copy of which was obtained by JI, the students wrote that the IHRA definition is one “that conflates anti-Zionism with antisemitism. In doing so, the IHRA definition effectively labels as antisemitic large groups of pro-Palestine Jewish and non-Jewish students on campus.”

The letter went on to say that, “Many individuals accurately believe that the creation of a State of Israel was a racist endeavor because doing so involved killing more than 15,000 Palestinians, expelling more than 700,000 Palestinians, and creating a refugee crisis that has resulted in over 2 million Palestinian refugees worldwide.”

Legrand said that during the group’s presentation, they faced more than an hour of “hostile questions accusing us of all kinds of things [like that we] want to police our fellow students… other groups got approved within five minutes. The same principles and rules don’t apply to every person at the university.”

Without university recognition, LSAA cannot host events on campus, reserve rooms or receive funds or a university email address, according to Legrand, who is not Jewish and grew up in Germany in a house that belonged to a Jewish family killed at Auschwitz.

A spokesperson for Columbia Law School did not immediately respond to JI’s request for comment.

Legrand noted that the denial of LSAA signals a larger antisemitism problem at Columbia. “The administration’s lack of leadership has only emboldened the antisemitism that is on campus,” she said.

Today was my second day of classes but my first day of my honors class.

I'm really excited about the class its about the history of my city which is pretty cool

This summer I was so invested in my phone and going out and everything. Now that school has started I'm so glad to be in a hoodie with a highlighter and my readings.

Asynchronous Assignment

Willem De Kooning

A Dutch-American expressionist artist and draughtsman or Draftsman, who is well known for his works of abstract expressionism with very bizarre and surreal designs, works like “Woman I” which took him 3 years to make, “Asheville”, “Gotham News”, and etc. Willem idea of expression that he drew was meant to be funny hence the bizarre designs on his Women artwork. The many scribbles may seem random but that not entirely true since all the scribbles makes shape and abstracts which brings back his talents as a draftsman.

Alice Neel

Alice Neel is a visual artist who make artworks of relative and strangers Nude or not throughout the Great Depression giving out an expressional feeling in that time. Her paintings have an expressionistic use of line and color, psychological acumen, and emotional intensity. All of her work other than a self-portrait is “The Family”, “The Sea”, “Well Baby Clinic” and etc.

Lucian Freud 

Lucian Freud is a British painter and draughtsman, specializing in figurative art, and is known as one of the foremost 20th-century English portraitists. He was influence by surrealism but later fall towards realism around the 1950s. He done surreal to realistic portrait like “Reflection”, “Portrait of Francis Bacon”, “Man with a feather”, “Reflection of the two kid”, and etc.

What impress me more about their works?

What impress me more is how they manage to release their work to public with confidence, though I don’t know if they were confidant or not. though William De Kooning was the one I see more on how he paints and how impress he use from the brush to use speed to make the design instead of taking his time.

My favorite Artist is Alice Neel

My reason why I pick Alice Neel was simply because of how her artwork or portrait give off a humanism world, seeing the people in the painting especially during the Great Depression does give us an idea on how people in art we’re in the present/past. I feel like that what many artist are drawing the present and interpret the now for the future.

Students at Seattle Pacific University (SPU) are not happy that the Christian institution in Washington state has reaffirmed its commitment to Biblical teachings on sex and sexuality.

On May 23, SPU's board of trustees announced the school will not be changing its policy prohibiting employees from same-sex sexual activity, extramarital sexual activity, and cohabitating before marriage.

The board chose to keep the policy and remain in communion with the Free Methodist Church USA, which defines marriage as “between one man and one woman” and as “the only proper setting for sexual intimacy.”  

The board came to the decision after “thorough and prayerful deliberation” and with “sober acknowledgment of how this news will be received”, Board Chair Cedric Davis stated in the announcement.

A day after the announcement, around 200 SPU students and staff walked out of class at 10:50 AM to protest the policy.  

The walkout was organized by students who believe that the board’s decision discriminates against the LGBTQ community and does not reflect their values

Students and staff wearing pride attire rallied outside Demaray Hall, the campus administration building, waving pride flags, playing kazoos, banging on buckets, and holding signs with messages like “go back to Sunday school and learn how to love your neighbor” and “Jesus is ashamed.”

Students could also be heard screaming “we want gay staff!” and “hey hey, ho ho, homophobia got to go.”  

Interim SPU President Pete Menjaras addressed the protestors, saying “I also know you're disappointed with the recent announcement by the board of trustees and I can't speak for them. I also know that you want change and change isn't happening fast enough for you and I recognize that.”

President Menjaras announced that the Board of Trustees will host a town hall to hear students’ concerns. The rally ended with students walking into Demaray Hall to hold a sit-in.  

Students were on day 10 of the sit-in as of June 3, the Seattle Times reports.

These rights of religious institutions are Constitutionally protected, as recently re-affirmed in the 2020 SCOTUS decision Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru.

Hi! Have you seen the new Mickey Mouse Rebrushed trailer??? Twitter is goin crazy over it and how it’s related to twst 😭 just wanted to hear your thoughts on it

I did spot quite a few parallels with TWST from the Rebrushed trailer! I'm not familiar with Epic Mickey at all, so I'll just be commenting on what I noticed right away. You'll have to excuse my limited knowledge.

Firstly!! This design of Mickey is the exact same as the one we see in TWST. Most noticeable is his white face, which is a fleshy peach color in most modern iterations.

Mickey is reading Alice in Wonderland’s sequel, Through the Looking Glass. Of course, Twisted Wonderland has Wonderland in its title, and even opens with an Alice in Wonderland inspired dorm. Yuu and Mickey also connect via their dreams and through the mirror shared in their rooms.

The theme of dreams is very present and upfront here; Mickey wakes up from sleeping and then creeps to his mirror, which appears to be a portal into another world. Hmm... dreams, mirrors, and traveling to other worlds, now what does that remind you of? You'll also notice that Mickey's room is the exact same as Yuu's room in Ramshackle, right down to the "inverted" room that appears when Mickey passes through the mirror. Everything up until this point is very similar to what is depicted in the 1936 short, Thru the Mirror.

Next, Mickey spies on a wizard carefully using a magic paintbrush over what seems to be a diorama of a bunch of buildings on a plot of land. When the wizard leaves, Mickey fiddles with the paintbrush, causes a mess, and calls forth some kind of black ink monster with green light coming from within it. This seems to be a very close parallel to Overblots, particularly since the most recent OB has a signature neon green color. If we really are to connect Epic Mickey to TWST, this scene also seems to allude that Yuu, Mickey, and/or the "wizard" have parts to play in bringing these Overblots to life. And who do we know that is a powerful wizard that is aware of the corrupting power of blot and runs a large chunk of land... say, a campus? Crowley. This goes hand-in-hand with the theory that Crowley is intentionally allowing these OBs to happen or is even puppeteering his students into OBing.

I find this visual in particular to be very ominous; again, we have the colors that match a certain OB dragon fae but also the map itself reminds me of Twisted Wonderland's and the eerie visual of Malleus's thorns digging into Sage's Island and aiming to go way beyond it.

Anyway, the ink monster is temporarily contained while Mickey returns to his own world. We then get a montage of various Mickey media passing by, as well as a lot of imagery that would imply the passage of time (clocks, the date on the calendar changing, etc.). So... what? Is that implying not only parallel worlds, but also a time skip? Or maybe a time... loop? Like time loop theory???

The ink monster somehow eventually escapes and makes it to Mickey's world, with the blot dripping from the ceiling waking Mickey up from his sleep. It drags Mickey away into a hole drenched in ink. Kind of foreboding when you realize Yuu has also had prophetic dreams... Not of OBs, but of the events leading up to them. And being dragged away into an inky... opening? Like an... abyss? Like book 7, Ruler of the ABYSS?

That's how the trailer concludes!! Gotta say, there's definitely a lot of shared elements between this and TWST. If I recall correctly, Epic Mickey was a game that existed on the Wii waaay before TWST. It even has largely the same cinematic trailer (just with older graphics), so to me it feels like TWST probably took inspiration from Epic Mickey rather than the other way around. There are definitely too many parallels for it to be a coincidence. If that's the case, then we can probably pull some hints for what awaits us in the rest of book 7 from these cinematics. (This is a video comparing the two side-by-side if you think that might be of use!)
