Good Tidings
Josh Futturman x GN!Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Josh barely have any time to yourselves due time traveling nonstop, trying to save the fate of humanity. However, being at the Futturman’s Christmas dinner party granted you two a fair amount of time.
Word Count: 2.9k
Content: 18+ Smut, MDNI, gender neutral reader (no genitals specified, it’s just vague penetration), cockwarming, lots of fluff, takes place during Future Man S1E6 “A Blowjob Before Dying”, too much shitty sex jokes n puns (im sorry) (not), giddy+silly+sweet love making, you think you are sooo fucking funny, more goofy than serious/lustful, you two are very much in love, more plot (high ass dialogue) than porn tbh
(A/n: Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!! Hope you enjoy this muahahaha and thank you all for your recent support! First smut written on this account, so be gentle with me please !)
-
You, Tiger, Wolf, and Josh were at the Futturman household, schedule disrupted due to the reluctance of Josh’s parents. They insisted that you all join them for their small Christmas dinner party. You were all sat down at the dining table, as well as the neighbors, Josh’s Uncle Barry, and Diane’s friend, Wanda (who was especially invited to perhaps keep Barry at bay).
While Tiger was mostly impatient and displeased with every mindless convo and laughter, talk revolved around several topics like DNA kits or Wolf’s strangely fascinating culinary.
You sat beside your boyfriend, Josh, slightly nervous about the time you were wasting. Ever since you’ve been dragged into the whole ‘Biotic Wars is real’ and ‘kill or be killed’ shit, you and Josh have been dealing with the worst, unimaginable shit ever. With the two of your adrenaline wearing off, you gradually processed everything that’s happened the past few days since you were never given a break. Hence the hand holding under the table as you two would seek comfort from one another.
But you attempted to distract yourself from the deaths you’ve witnessed and the near-death experiences you’ve had to your best ability by indulging in every conversation.
“Gabe, honey, tell them about—about the recent fishing trip we went on,” Josh’s mother, Diane encouraged to her husband with her sweet, achingly kind voice. You had so much respect for Josh’s parents, so it was pretty easy for you all to hit it off well. They loved you. In fact, they were heavily relieved that Josh had finally found someone, let alone someone as amazing as you.
Gabe let out a hearty chuckle as he prepared himself to tell the table his story.
“So, a couple of days ago, Diane and I went on a small fishing trip. And I remembered an old trick back in the day that attracted a lot of trout,” he explained as you picked up your glass of wine, sipping some generously. Diane smiled at him with a nod as he continued. “One of the very efficient ways to go about fish bait is blowing worms.”
You choke on your wine, holding in a laugh, coughing a bit instead as Josh looks at you with a knowing smile. “I’m sorry, what?” You asked, trying not to grin too widely. Did you hear that right?
“Blowing worms,” Gabe repeated, getting a confined chuckle out of you and Josh. “You inflate the worms with air, which makes them float instead of having your bait be at the very bottom. It’s perfect, especially near the winter time. Worked like a charm.”
“Ohh,” you gasp in wonder. You chuckle to yourself before you spontaneously say, “Yeah, actually, I think I did do that a few times. Blew a-a worm.”
You looked at Josh, thinking you were being hilarious, but he looked at you with surprised eyes and parted lips of shock that slowly transitioned into a smile.
“Really?” Josh’s father expressed with intrigue. “I didn’t even know you fish. You have someone teach you that method, or—”
“Oh, no, Mr. Futturman, I,” you speak as you occasionally switch from looking at him to Josh. “I think it’s a very popular method. It’s a pretty natural instinct, you know? Blowing worms, that is.”
“Wow, really? Always thought it was an old-fashioned sort of thing.”
“Nah, far from old-fashioned, it’s almost contemptuous!”
You did pretty well at suppressing your laughter, because you sounded really earnest. Josh covered his mouth, amused by your subtle humor.
“Joshy, we didn’t know that Y/n likes fishing. We could’ve taken them on our trip. In fact, we could’ve all went,” Diane suggests as she looked at Josh and then you.
It was like everyone at the table was blind to your immature, yet humorous implication. Except, of course, your boyfriend.
“Oh, no worries, Mrs. Futturman,” you insisted kindly. “I don’t usually fish. Plus, blowing worms can be very exhausting.”
“Y/n—” Josh reacted, but interrupted himself with a suppressed laugh.
“You think so?” Mr. Futturman raised an eyebrow. “I just stick a syringe in them, inflate it, and bam, it’s all thick and ready to g—”
You and Josh burst out laughing, holding onto the table and each other. You swore there were slight tears coming out of your eyes as both of your faces were red. You felt overjoyed to feel happiness and delight for the first time ever since your involvement in the mission. And you felt even more glad that it was your boyfriend that you fooled around with.
“Sorry, sorry,” Josh says after his laughter died down as the entire table was confused. “I just—We just thought about a, um, moment when—Um… Actually, Y/n and I did go fishing once. Isn’t that—isn’t that right?”
You nod and go along with it, detaining your giggles.
“Well, anyways, we actually did that method, and yeah, you’re right, it works like a charm!” He exclaimed with joy as his parents smile at him with approval and pride.
“Bet the worm was pretty small, huh?” Tiger jumped in wittily, however, in a coldly nonchalant manner.
“And pathetic!” Wolf blurted.
“Hey, even if that might’ve been true—might’ve—it-it probably had a personality, you know?” He reckoned with a shrug, making you laugh again.
***
“You are—are fucking terrible, you know that?” Josh quickly muttered under his breath as you two continued to kiss each other deeply on his bed. “Those were my parents.”
“C’mon, baby, admit it, it was comedy gold,” you giggle, pressing your lips to his once more by tugging his black, skinny necktie towards you as you remained sitting on his lap.
The dinner party was still going on downstairs. After a long time of looking at each other longingly at the table, you two decided to excuse yourselves in order to “prepare gifts for Josh’s coworkers that he forgotten to wrap” in his room.
When you guys rushed in his room, you couldn’t take your hands off each other, immediately making out once the door was locked. However, you then had to close all his blinds before you met him back on the bed. This wasn’t new to you, none of it was. The soft, warm orange that his room’s light emitted strangely comforted you, as well as being back on his soft, spacey mattress.
Was it a good idea to leave Tiger and Wolf alone with Josh’s family and company? Probably not. But you’ve taught them enough shit. They tolerate Josh’s parents, so why not a few other guests as well? And you’ll only be gone for no longer than five minutes, you’d hoped.
You bring your hands to his pants, attempting to unbuckle his belt. “Shit—What the—What the fuck is this?” You grumble, Josh laughing at you as you struggle.
“I think it’s—” He giggled, bringing his own hands to his belt, trying to remove it, pulling. “I think it’s stuck.”
“What the shit?” You wheeze. “Fuckin’—Fuckin’ cock block!” You continue to mess with the belt, trying your best to unbuckle it.
“Wait, you—you’re almost there, you—”
“Oh my god! Holy shit! I got it!” You let out a surprised gasp, quickly unbuttoning and unzipping his pants right after.
“Oh shit! Flawless victory!” He exclaimed, making you stop in your tracks, looking back up at him.
“You did not just quote Mortal Kombat because I successfully unbuckled your belt,” you raise an eyebrow, nevertheless amused by his dorkiness.
“Maybe,” he answered smugly.
“You’re lucky I am in love with you, otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have let that slide,” you chuckle.
“Oh, come on. You’d love my video game references either way,” he insisted.
“I’m serious, Josh, the amount of things I’ve let slide because I love you is kind of crazy. Let me just say, I am so glad I met you after the ‘apple juice’ incident that Ray told me about.”
“Ray told you about that?”
“He told me a lot of things. Mostly the embarrassing things. I think he wanted to freak me out, you know? Always thought I was too good for you.”
You pulled his pants off, throwing it carelessly down on the floor. Your lips attached once more as he snickered as you then cupped his face with your warm hands. You look at your lover, his big, brown, desperate eyes looking at you with utmost adoration. “Well, jokes on him, he was entirely wrong. You are so good to me, you know that?”
He smiles at you softly, and you could sense how flustered he felt to hear that (the blushing patently gave it away). “You’re the one who’s been on my side since forever. Even when you got involved in all this shit that you didn’t even have to be in. You-You could’ve called me crazy, and-and broken up with me, but you believed me and stayed by my side, even knowing that things were gonna get dirty. And they did, get really dirty.” Rest in peace Janis and Carl? Or, rather, die, you evil perf-cocks? Eh, doesn’t fucking matter. “You’re so good for me, sometimes I can’t believe you’re even real.”
You giggle sweetly as you give him another kiss, a quiet smack caused by your lips deftly leaving his own to speak. “Well, I’m here and I’m real, and I’ll always be there for you, baby,” you reassure. You were perfect for him. Indefinitely.
He smiled blissfully. “I love you so much.”
You two made out passionately until you were laying under him, the lower halves of your bodies bare as you discarded the necessary clothes.
“Do you think your parents and everyone else knew about the worm thing or are they just that… I don’t know… clueless?” You asked endearingly under your breath as your fingers entangle in his soft, brown hair.
“Hmm. Possibly,” he reckons, raising his eyebrows as he thought about it. “That was still kind of evil of you, though.”
“Me, personally, I thought it was hilarious.”
“Blowing worms?”
“C’mon, your father set himself up for that.”
“Tiger called it small,” he muttered lamentably. “And Wolf said it was pathetic.”
“Jeez, whatever happened to personality?” You chuckle softly.
He sighed. “They still sort of called me out.”
“Shut up. It’s average, to say the least. Doesn’t matter either way, you’re enough.”
“But—”
“Josh, if it bothers you this much, then just prove them wrong right now,” you reply with a laugh.
“As in—?”
“Josh, c’mon, we don’t have time anyways. They’re expecting us any minute because of that shitty made-up story excuse. I love foreplay, dude, but I’m pretty sure we didn’t acknowledge the time at all. Quickies are definitely not our cup of tea. Y—” Your breath hitched as you felt his tip prod at your sensitive entrance. He gave you a soft, comforting kiss on the nose. You looked into each other’s eyes deeply, then your lips crashed into each other’s as the two of you stifled your moans once Josh finally thrusted in.
“Y-You know you’re p-perfect just the—mm—way you are, right?” You ask gently, wrapping your arms around his neck.
He smiled at this, kissing your lips once more, beginning to move. Your heart fluttered each second you felt him thrust in and out, slightly and satisfyingly stretching you. His hips moved quite skillfully, but also slightly clumsily, which was nonetheless admirable.
Your usual soft moans and gasps would be replaced by stifled grunts and sighs, due to the company downstairs. As much as you wanted the whole world to know that Josh Futturman was yours and only yours, you also had dignity—plus, it was his goddamn parents downstairs.
You giggled as you felt his nose against yours each rough kiss. “Y-You know, however, I think the only complaint I have about you is the fact that you hate Super Mario Bros.” You point out with a chuckle.
“Y/n, in my—agh—defense, it literally makes no sense. Like, why would there be pipes that are—”
“Okay, why rely solely on logic and rationality, hm, Futturman? I thought video games were all about escape. It’s all just harmless fun.”
“Yeah, well, I’m much more into games with thought-out plots and challenges,” he remarked, making you roll your eyes playfully. “Anyways, it pretty much just got ruined for me even more when Tracy at the video game store talked about Luigi having a very hairy, Italian cock.”
You raise an eyebrow.
“Baby, I love you. However, your goddamn dick is currently inside of me. Please do not talk about Luigi’s theoretic hairy penis.”
“Noted,” he assents, going back to kissing you passionately, while moving slowly inside of you, yet deeper with each thrust. You let out a quiet, pleasured gasp as you felt him fill you perfectly, his hands lovingly gripping your waist to keep you still.
Your eyes closed as you indulged in the feeling of his gentle thrusts, him peppering kisses on your neck, softly chuckling under his breath. He guessed he was still in disbelief that he had someone as amazing as you.
“I… I still can’t believe someone as perfect as you would ever go out with a loser like me,” he scoffed, pressing more kisses against your neck and jaw.
“Hey, seriously?” You frown, holding his face in your hands once more, stroking his cheeks with your thumbs. “You are… a lot of things, Josh. But a loser isn’t one of them. Okay? You are so kind and funny and caring and thoughtful a-and—m-mm—amazing i-in general.”
“I—Fuck. I—I don’t deserve you,” he panted.
“J-Jesus Christ, sh-shut your fuckin’ rathole. Yes you do, baby. You deserve me as much as I deserve you.”
It was becoming harder to focus on your words as you continued to feel an increased sensation and pleasure as his thrusts quicken and falter. You let out a small gasp as you tense things up by wrapping your legs around his waist to bring him in even deeper. You two had been speaking and giggling to each other constantly that you didn’t even notice the lewd, wet, slapping against the skin that came from each heavy thrust. Josh grabbed one of your hands, interlocking your fingers tightly on the mattress beside your head.
“J-Josh, I—” You begin breathlessly.
“I know, me too,” he grunts as soft, inaudible whimpers and whines leave his lips while the movement of his hips stuttered. His rhythm was becoming unsteady, but it was also increasing in speed. “I—Y/n, f-fuck, I’m c—”
“Sh-shit, baby, I—” You pant as you felt closer and closer over the edge, every mere feeling increasing your stimulation. You bring your hand to cover your mouth and suppress any loud moans as you finally released, the knot in your stomach undoing itself as you sigh afterwards once your hand left your mouth. Josh came exactly right after you as his hips jolted for the final time, spilling his warm, white seed inside of you, burying his face in your neck to muffle a high-pitched grunt and acute whines.
You two were breathing heavily, kissing each other’s lips softly and lovingly after you both came down from your high. You two never moved from your position, still fragile and sore. Josh caressed the side of your waist under your shirt, his head resting in your neck as you moved your hand to play with his hair, holding him in your arms.
“This is probably the only time we’ll have together alone before we have to continue with the damn mission,” you figured, tangling his strands of hair in between your fingers.
“It’s bullshit,” he mumbles, his thumb continuing to rub your waist.
“Enjoy the moment while we can?” You suggested with a small chuckle.
“Yeah, I guess,” he sighed dejectedly.
A beat.
“Hm,” you hum thoughtfully.
“Yeah?”
“Nothing, I just… I like it whenever you’re inside of me,” you comment softly. This was probably the most affectionately vulnerable and honest you have been with him. Your tone lacked any intention for humor or lust; you were genuine.
He lifted his head up from your neck. “Seriously?”
“I don’t know. It just feels right. You know, as if you were, like, made for me exactly,” you whispered lovesickly, looking down at his sweet, plump lips to his profound, gorgeous brown eyes. “I wanna stay like this a little longer. You’re so perfect for me. I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” he replied with a smile, kissing your lips soothingly.
Then suddenly,
“Futturman! L/n! Get out of there, we gotta go now! Operation Cameronium!” Tiger called from the other side of the door. “Goddamnit. The fucking—tiny man—baby thing—is, just, really starting to piss me off. Let’s go!”
You and Josh looked at each other for a while in silence before bursting out into laughter.
“We-we better go before she considers murdering little baby Wallace,” you suggest with a soft smile.
“Yeah… Wait. Do you really think—”
“No…” You answer before he could finish his sentence. “I know she seems all stoic on the outside, but I feel like the past few days, she changed a bit. Empathy-wise. Slightly, at the very least.” Josh nods.
“I’m really gonna miss this,” he sighs.
“Me too. But don’t worry, once we fix everything, we have all the time in the world together,” you assert.
“Okay,” he smiles sweetly, kissing your lips before slowly pulling out of you, leaving you to feel empty and slightly bummed.
The two of you, with your clothes back on and hair quickly fixed, you waltzed downstairs with no problem. Your hands had been interlocked, faces a bit flushed as you smile to yourselves.
“You two sure look happy,” Diane expresses joyfully. “You really got into the Christmas spirit, wrapping all those gifts upstairs, huh?”
You giggled under your breath. “Oh, yeah, definitely, Mrs. Futturman. Uh, very much so. I really love Christmas, you know? The gift wrapping Joshy and I did upstairs and, you know, all the Christmas traditions. ‘Specially, ‘specially the yule log.” You look at Josh with a knowing grin as he just listened in, suspecting nothing at all. “Really makes you feel warm inside, am I right?”

HOW THE HELL CAN SOMEONE BE THAT PRETTY?
Sanji stood before you, a vision of grace and charm amidst the tranquil surroundings. A dappled ray of sunlight kissed the golden strands of his hair as he turned to look at you, his eyes warm and inviting. "You still with me, love?" he asked with a hint of concern.
You blinked, momentarily lost in the ethereal beauty of the moment. His voice, like a gentle melody, brought you back to reality. "Huh? Oh uh, yeah. Sorry. Just had a thought.’’
Okay, maybe taking up Sanji's offer was a bad idea.
Your inner monologue was in full swing as you attempted to regain your composure in Sanji's presence. While you desperately tried to focus on the task at hand – making a batter - it felt like an uphill battle with the distraction that was Sanji's otherworldly beauty.
As Sanji's smile deepened and he drew closer, it became increasingly clear that perhaps accepting his offer had been both a blessing and a curse. His unwavering gaze made it almost impossible to concentrate on the simplest of tasks, and you could feel yourself visibly cringe with embarrassment as you stumbled over your words.
"It's alright," he repeated softly, his voice like a soothing balm for your scattered thoughts. But your internal dialogue continued to run rampant, berating you for your inability to maintain composure.
Yep, definitely a bad idea. ABORT ABORT ABORT!
You managed to force yourself to focus on the batter, measuring out ingredients and mixing them together with all the determination you could muster. You couldn't help but sneak glances at Sanji out of the corner of your eye, admiring the way he effortlessly exuded elegance even in the simplest of moments.
Deep down, you knew that taking up Sanji's offer had given you a glimpse into a world of beauty and charm that few could match. But it also meant constantly battling your own nerves and insecurities in his presence. As you continued to work on the batter, you couldn't help but wonder if the effort to keep your cool was worth the privilege of being near him.
Eventually, you managed to finish the batter, and Sanji offered a satisfied nod. "There you go, love," he said. "A perfect batter, made with a little extra charm, courtesy of yours truly."
You couldn't help but smile, feeling grateful for the unexpected encounter and the delightful banter that had accompanied it. "Thanks, Sanji. You certainly know how to make cooking an unforgettable experience."
Sanji winked. "That's just a small taste of what I can offer," he said with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
A FEW HOURS LATER.
"Usopp, you won't believe what happened today," you started, your words tumbling out in a rush. "I mean, I thought it was a good idea to help out in the kitchen with Sanji, but it turned out to be a disaster."
Usopp looked up from his gadgets, curiosity piqued. "What happened?" he asked, his wide eyes fixed on you.
You fidgeted with your fingers, unable to meet Usopp's gaze directly. "Well, first of all, Sanji is ridiculously good-looking. Like, unbelievably good-looking. I couldn't concentrate at all because he's just so... distracting."
Usopp chuckled, realizing where this was going. "Yeah, I've heard about Sanji's looks. But go on."
"Exactly!" you exclaimed. "I couldn't focus on anything. I kept staring at him, and my mind just went blank. I must've sounded like a complete idiot, stumbling over my words and AHHH - making a total fool of myself!’’ The tips of your ears began to burn with a scalding heat once you had replayed the whole thing, moving to slap your cheeks with both hands.
Usopp tried to stifle his laughter but failed miserably. "Damn, you got it bad, huh."
You groaned. "Usopp you’re not helping!"
Usopp finally managed to compose himself, wiping away tears of laughter from his eyes. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he said, still chuckling. "But, come on, it's not every day you get to see someone get so flustered over Sanji. It's kind of hilarious."
You shot him a playful glare. "Well, I'm glad my misery is entertaining for you."
Usopp patted your shoulder sympathetically. "Look, I get it. Sanji's got this whole suave thing going on. But don't worry, you'll get used to it."
You sighed, feeling a bit more at ease with Usopp's understanding. "I hope so. I don't want to keep embarrassing myself every time I'm around him."
~~
USOPP YOU LIAR.
As the days went by, you found that Usopp's reassurances about getting used to Sanji's charm were a bit overly optimistic. If anything, your infatuation with the charismatic chef seemed to grow stronger with time.
Every interaction with Sanji left you flustered, your heart racing, and your mind a jumble of thoughts. You tried to employ Usopp's "Sanji Stare" and "Art of Complimenting" techniques, but in the presence of the suave chef, it was easier said than done.
One day, as you were helping Sanji in the kitchen, he handed you a freshly prepared plate of seafood risotto. His gaze met yours, and you attempted the Sanji Stare, but it came out as a nervous twitch.
Sanji, with his customary charm, leaned in slightly and said, "You seem a bit flustered today. Everything alright?"
"Mhm, yeah, all good, Everything's A-OKAY.’’ You gave him a tight smile.
He chuckled softly, and it seemed like he was enjoying your discomfort. "Well, I'm glad to hear that." He paused for a moment, and then added with a wink, "You know, you look even more beautiful when you blush."
You were utterly caught off guard by his compliment, and your grip on the plate of risotto faltered. It was a miracle that Sanji managed to save it from hitting the floor. Your face had reached a level of crimson that you didn't know was possible, and you felt like you were about to spontaneously combust from embarrassment.
‘’Hey, can you hurry up? Luffy’s getting antsy.’’ Zoro called out.
You felt a surge of relief as Zoro's voice broke the awkward moment. "Uh, yeah, coming right up," you replied hastily, glad for any excuse to escape Sanji's charming presence.
Sanji, still wearing that mischievous grin, released the plate of risotto into your care and took a step back. "I'll leave the rest to you, my lovely assistant," he said, his tone dripping with playfulness.
You nodded, practically fleeing the kitchen to serve Luffy and the others.

Culinary Comfort
Tumblr media
Pairing: Kento Nanami x Reader
CW: Food is heavily mentioned, some overthinking and insecurities on reader's part, Gojo is mentioned once (lol), use of petnames, just being fluffy and indulgent! (a suggestive implication at the end, ig?), not proofread as usual
WC: 765
Summary: Just exploring how shared love for food can create little comforting memories between you and Kento
Tumblr media
You know Kento is the type of guy to take you to different premium eateries which range from restaurants to pâtisseries and the likes of that. He just loves the expression on your face which is of pure concentration, but all that makes him fondly smile is your cute little frown with an even cuter pout on your lips, all just trying to decide on what you want to eat from the wide variety of delicacies.
But he hates to see the hesitance on your features, and he knows why you feel that even. You genuinely feel at times you should not indulge much no matter how delicious the dishes may seem. Also, the fact that these are so expensive and your partner, Kento always pays for them, makes you feel guilty of burdening him.
But Kento doesn’t know how to make you realize that he loves to see you eat, to see the satisfaction on your face when you close your eyes and let out pleased soft noises as soon as the flavors meet your taste buds. You already have seen how he loves to help you out in the kitchen and most of the weekends he even tries out a new recipe for you which he is sure that you would savor. You can undoubtedly say that food is a love language of Kento.
So coming back to eateries, one fine day, he takes you out to a café that had opened a few weeks ago, and he tried it out himself too, unfortunately with Gojo after a mission. But fret not! Because this time he wants to have a better and peaceful experience with you since he loves to introduce you to new things and experiences.
So similar things happen this time as well. Upon entering, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sweet pastries envelops you. The subtle hum of conversations of other patrons creates a cozy ambiance on this bright weekend. You both take a table near the glass windows that look out at the busy street. The menu arrives, its pages whispering promises of delightful flavors, and he is fondly looking at your confused face of trying to pick something for yourself. But then as soon as the waitress comes in to take your order, Kento is quick to take over and surprise you. You never expected him to place an order where he requests to bring one serving from every item under the specials section.
As you open your mouth to speak, Kento preemptively squeezes your hand, a silent reassurance that halts your words. He smiles at the waitress so that he goes away before he brings in the requested delicacies. In a hushed tone, you find yourself blurting out your concerns to Kento, trying to explain that it’s probably too much and that he shouldn’t carelessly spend much money, plus you will gain weight, which seems unfavorable.
His words are often sparse, but his actions speak volumes. So he just gets up and drags his chair near to yours. He sits back down, holds your hands, and rubs your palms in comforting circles. He murmurs, “Look at me, sweetheart”' his voice a gentle melody that resonates in the quiet intimacy of the moment. Your gaze drops to your lap, worry etched in your eyes as if confessing a pang of hidden guilt, in some subconscious shame of indulgence.
With a tender touch, he lifts your chin, encouraging you to meet his gaze. His eyes are so soft and kind, that it almost makes you want to cry for burdening him with your petty, annoying habits. But he just says, “Listen to me carefully, love.” His words are a tender reassurance in the midst of your worries. “It is fine to eat more if you want to. I know you love to eat, and it is completely okay to indulge once in a while. We are not doing this everyday, are we?”. You nod your head, and he just kindly smiles while rubbing your cheek, not caring if anyone sees or judges.
What is his priority is to make you comfortable and keep you happy. Plus, he doesn’t care if you gain weight or anything. He reassures you, 'It's more than good; I love the softness of you.' His words carry a warmth that transcends the physical, embracing the entirety of your being. He knows that he would just get more of you to love and worship back at home, in the sanctity of your shared existence, so that you truly know how he loves all of you.

a/n: This was really self-indulgent, but I felt like writing it. I just love to eat and feed my loved ones with good food too. But I hate the guilt that sometimes creep in some of us, which makes us hesitant to delve in full sensory experience of culinary treats. If you reach till the end, thank you for reading, and I hope you eat well always <333

It was just a night, much like any other, when everything changed. Kara was tired- between the apartment fire and her work that day at CatCo and mopping up another alien crime ring, she’s barely slept in four days and had been skipping meals. It was a rare thing indeed when Lena was pestering Kara to eat lunch.
As soon as she reached the house, she glanced up and tilted her glasses down. Lena was in the kitchen, hard at work. A quick scan of the countertop revealed the mess she’d made putting together her homemade gyoza. As with everything in her life, when Lena decided to learn to cook, that she might pamper her girlfriend and her superhuman appetite, Lena went into it fully, taking culinary classes and equipping the remodeled kitchen of their suburban homestead with every conceivable gadget. Lena’s first change to the house was a bump-out that turned the already expansive “chef’s kitchen” into a near-commercial level culinary laboratory, and she threw herself into making dumplings with the same gusto with which she had set about solving the energy crisis, as if the freshly made potstickers awaiting the oil heating in the gas-powered commercial wok were as vital to humanity’s future as the fusion plant she was building in the desert.
Kara stopped in the entryway to the kitchen and drank Lena in, enjoying the fleeting moment before she was noticed. Hands covered in flour the elbow, Lena hunched over her cookbook, expression furrowed in deep concentration. She’s dressed down in a baggy flannel and patterned leggings that hugged the inviting curve of her hips that cried out for Kara’s hands, and wore her hair in a simple, loose ponytail. Everything about her was soft and cozy and home, and Kara would trade a king’s feast for one taste of those soft lips.
The whole scene played out in her mind. She’s sidle up behind Lena, who’d crack a joke about Kara being dressed as the CEO, and pretend she hadn’t noticed Kara’s return. Kara would let down her hair and bury her fingers in it, then her nose to devour Lena’s scent. As soon as Kara’s lips found the curve of Lena’s jaw, dinner would be indefinitely postponed and Kara would sate her hunger in other and better ways.
Then, she heard it. Beneath Lena’s heartbeat, strong and steady and safe, was another. A tiny, racing thing, like a baby bird. Kara stood there dumbfounded for too long a beat before she understood and let out a soft cry.
Lena looked up.
“Darling? What’s wrong?”
Kara fought to keep her voice from choking but failed. “I love you.”
“Did something happen?” Lena said, turning from the counter. “Kara, what is it?”
“I love you. I’m not angry and we’re okay. I just need Alex. I’ll be right back, I promise.”
Lena nodded. “Okay.”
Kara was out the door and in her suit and flying just fast enough not to endanger Lena. They’d been trying for months for this; dozens of visits to the Fortress, tests, experiments. She knew that, eventually, it would work.
It was hitting her now. Kara landed a little too hard on Alex’s back porch and knocked on the glass.
Alex was there in an instant. “Kara? What’s wrong? Is everything…”
“Lena’s pregnant.”
Alex’s face went briefly blank. “Oh.”
“Can I come in?”
“Yeah.”
Kara stepped into the house, sat down. As she took a seat, sweeping her cape to the side, Alex poured them both glasses of seltzer water and joined her. They sat quietly for a long time.
They were both quiet for a few minutes before Alex said, “How did you find out?”
“I heard it. I don’t know if she knows.”
“Kara,” said Alex, “did you run?”
Kara looked up sharply, eyes stinging with tears. “What have I done?”
“I don’t understand.”
“We made a baby, Alex. A little person, a living being we’re bringing into the world. What have I done?”
“Kara?” Said Alex, resting her hand on Kara’s. “Slow down, okay? Breathe. Tell me what you’re thinking.”
“Lena and I talked about this,” said Kara. “This life we have, being together, all the risks. We agreed to it. This little baby didn’t. She’s going to see her mom getting her head punched in on TV. What if I get sent to the Phantom Zone again? What if I die?”
“You won’t-“
“I already have,” Kara snapped, surging to her feet. “How many times, Alex? How many? What if there’s no magic grass to bring me back next time? What if I leave them alone?”
Alex stared at her, face an unreadable mask, heart racing.
Kara turned, frantic, and paced Alex’s kitchen, her eyes drawn inexorably to Esme’s drawings on the fridge, to the pictures of Alex and Kelly on the living room wall.
“So don’t,” said Alex.
“How?”
“Maybe it’s time for Supergirl to hang it up.”
Kara froze, and this time it was her own heart she heard hammering in her chest, batting against its cage of ribs as if it might break free. Her eyes found the mirror above the living room sofa and she saw herself now in the colors and crest of her house.
Her house.
“What do you mean?”
Alex stood up. “You have died three times,” she said. Clinically dead. I was there. Maybe it is time for it to stop.”
“I can’t do that to them again,” Kara agreed.
“No, but I’m not saying this for them, Kara. I’m saying it for you. You paid. Whatever debt you think you owe, you’ve paid it.”
Kara covered her mouth in her hand, biting back a sob as the tears came.
“Why should I have this, huh? Tell me why I should have it? Just because they all died and I didn’t?”
Alex stood there, stuck silent. Kara knew the hug was coming before it arrived, and melted into it. Alex gripped her firm and strong.
“I have so much to lose now,” Kara sobbed.
“No, Kara. You have so much to live for now.”
Kara’s eyes flicked open. She stared last Alex, ignoring the sting of free flowing tears. The thought of all that had come before. The sight of Krypton, crumbling in a green flash as if devoured by some great primordial dragon. Reign and Red Daughter, the darkness that has gripped her between death and Sol’s loving warmth, gifted by the soul of this Earth herself.
They were not grave markers but way stones, not portents of doom but a map. A map that led only one place.
“I have to go. Lena.”
“It’s okay,” said Alex. “Go home to your girl, Kara. Call me when you’re up for it, and maybe you can talk to Kelly, too.”
“I’d like that.”
A few minutes later, Kara came to a gentle landing on the upstairs balcony and entered through their bedroom. She could smell dinner, and a quick glance told her that Lena had finished cooking and was waiting for her downstairs with a glass of juice- not wine. Lena turned it in her fingers, her face a mask of worry. Beside her sat the potstickers in a big bowl, kept warm by a damp towel. Another look revealed a pregnancy test hidden in Lena’s shirt pocket.
Kara reached up to slip on her glasses and dissolve the suit, the stopped.
Instead, she took it off, slipping out of the suit before changing into a threadbare sweater and some joggers. Later, she would fold it, put it in a box, put it away.
Right now she slipped into the kitchen, padding silently behind Lena on bare feet, savoring the quick flutter of Lena’s heart when Kara embraced her from behind. Kara made sure to press a kiss to her cheek before deftly sliding the test from Lena’s pocket.
“You used your super senses, didn’t you?” said Lena. “That’s not fair.”
“You know what’s not fair?” said Kara. “Being the most beautiful woman in the world, and in my house no less. The audacity.”
Lena gave her a crooked smile. “Technically, this is my house.”
Kara placed a hand on Lena’s belly and spread her fingers in an wide, protective grip.
“Our house,” she whispered.
The potstickers, unfortunately, went cold.
Seeing their partner make them a meal.

THE NEW 'MENU" IS GONNA BE HELL FOR SYD
Tumblr media
I have been reading Sous Chef: 24 Hours on the Line –by Michael Gibney because I wanted to understand more about Sydney's future responsibilities. I know next to nothing about the cooking industry, and this show particularly doesn't want to waste time explaining the context to the untrained eye (which is fair, we are here for the drama).
Tumblr media
Man, this book was so awesome. It is literally like experiencing a The Bear episode in book format. It takes you through the whole routine, explaining who does what, the expectations, skillsets, and the emotional burden of each position. The protagonist is, of course, the sous chef, and what I have read made me feel scared for Sydney next season. So, every fact I display here is because the book presented it as the expected.
THE BEAR'S CASE
Now, a clarification: As I understand, the CDC supervises the whole kitchen, which is Syd's official title. But Carmy will technically still act as CDC since most executives don't move a finger; they are supposed to be there only to ensure rules and quality standards are followed.
The CDC is the person in the kitchen that everyone answers "yes chef/Oui chef too. The one that calls the orders and keeps everyone in line. The one who has the final say about what goes out of the kitchen. Under them, there is the sous, making sure all the operations are in order.
So you will technically have two CDCs; just one of them will have the final say, and you will have Tina as the sous. But that puts Sydney in a position to act both as CDC and a Sous, so I am using the book to guide what we may expect her to endure. This as a report made last minute with only two sources (pretty good, but still only two). Now, lets begin.
A very inexperienced staff: The author created a fictional restaurant based on his experiences, merging people he has met over the years to give you an idea of the most common in the industry. But it made something very clear to me: the staff of the bear, especially the line cooks, do not possess the training to operate at the level that Carmy is requesting. They better send them to culinary school before officially opening. I don't know why (I actually blame Carmy for this), but they haven't prioritized hiring certified staff since the beginning. They should have never had an opening day without knowing their staff and, if they were as green as Syd described them, sent their asses to culinary school right away. The fact they only bothered to send Tina and Ebra is baffling. And even when training is essential, experience is what can make the difference in unprecedented scenarios, and everything that Carmy is asking is pretty unprecedented by definition.
With the menu changing every day, Sydney's job as a cook herself and as the captain of many cooks is going to be darm near impossible.
Actually, in the book, there were two sous chefs, one for opening and one for closing. Even if you delegate the administrative task normally reserved for the morning sous chef to someone like Natalie (managing schedules and callouts, checking deliveries, and inspecting the state of the food before opening), it would still leave a lot of things on Sydney's plate. I am gonna be quoting this article:
"Few are the kitchens I’ve worked or sta’aged in where the Sous Chef wasn’t doing all the work that the general public thinks the Chef is doing. And don’t get me wrong, such is the natural progression of things and not without good reason. But more often than not, while the Chef is the General, with his/her name on the line, the Sous Chef is the lieutenant, seeing to it that the work gets done in the trenches".
Tumblr media
During service, the chef (CDC) plates the dishes in the pass, but before that, the sous has to check the food the line cook brings; they need to be aware of how the executive chef likes a particular dish, the consistency, temperature, and other culinary details. Again, Carmy will act as CDC here and Syd as sous. Even though I didn't see them do this in f&f, it will likely be necessary for the future. Carmy changing the recipes constantly is gonna make it virtually impossible for Sydney to keep up, with their particular preparation, and since they are gonna be the final portal after the food gets to be presented to the client, it could cause a lot of friction between them.
Not only that, the sous chef normally leads the preparation of the specials (since in most restaurants, the ordinary menu has been established, only the specials can change every day) For both sous chefs in the book, leading prep consumed most of their time before opening, since, again, the executive has already trained them in how he prefers certain parts of the recipe. Again, in the Bear's circumstances, this will probably also be Sydney's job.
Replacing staff. The book even includes a scenario when a line cook fails, and the sous has to cover that station. Sydney is kind of destined to experience this, too, considering how unreliable their staff could be. If that happens, Carmy will be alone at the pass, checking every element before plating, which will obviously cause a delay.
Tina is the sous, and it will be interesting to see how she manages that; she definitely doesn't have the experience, and these expectations are definitely no industry standard. It hurts me that Sydney may suggest hiring another sous to work next to her or another cook who actually has experience operating in the industry to level up her workload. That is where I think Luca's role will be next season, if he goes to work for them. He probably has the skill set to do it. There is no point in having two people manage desserts.
Tumblr media
Evidently, with a menu changing every day, it also means that Carmy has to make Syd come early every day to explain this recipe to her and make sure she can lead the rest of the kitchen in making them. Most of their dynamic is gonna rely on how much Syd can actually fulfill Carmy's expectations; she came here to work for him, running away from psycho chefs, and yet Carmy's expectations are going to be the most reckless the industry has ever seen.
The closing sous has to prepare everything for the next day long after the executive and the other sous are gone, revising the mistakes that were made, and preventing the ones they could make tomorrow.
Regardless of the title and responsibilities that may go on Sydney for being the only other experienced chef in the kitchen, we are talking about a 15-hour day. And I know it can be expected in this industry, but the layout for having two sous made plenty of sense. I don't know if Carmy will take part of the workload. I hope that is the case.
But yeah, the line "so you can push me, and I can push you" is taking a new connotation in my mind. What Carmy is creating doesn't make any logistical sense, with an untrained/inexperienced staff and with a sous chef that he trusts and cares about, but he is basically asking to perform to a level that defeats reason.
It is not even the level that made him "the bear" in his years as the best CDC in the world. Because even if Carmy's past executive was abusive and cruel, their expectations had to obey certain logistic logic that Carmy was completely abandoning. Carmy is not gonna be abusive, but all of this is a whole orchestra he is creating for self-punishment because even he won't be able to keep up with it, he may push everyone away because there is nobody who can. All of this is his version of self-harming. And Sydney and everyone he loves will witness, it until he asks for help.
Edit: I had to make a correction, explaining Carmy's and Syd's will technically both do the job of CDCs. Again, please do let me know more about that or feel free to correct me.

TW: BOTMM is a short drabble leading up to Keratoconus Entrapment. Although nothing explicit happens in this drabble be wary that the following will contain such themes/mentions (along with Keratoconus Entrapment): Horror/dark themes, deaths/murders, butchering/gore, unsettling descriptions, kidnapping, gen violence, blackmailing, alcohol, partying, corruption, morphed views of artistic expression, manipulation and gaslighting. All characters are aged up, you have been warned
This idea sparked while I was listening to an audio and I was like "hmm, i like how ominous and spooky this can be." then suddenly boom, Jade Leech has spawned. So hear me out okay WAIT IM ACTUALLY KINDA SCARED RN BECAUSE SO MUCH IS BEING ENVISIONED IN MY MIND😭🙏 :') Okay but as the ideas kept on racking and stacking on top of each other I started to get a little "oh wow, this is actually starting to sound kinda good tho-" (im envisioning an uncanny Jade rn and i'm scared-)
Have you heard?
Heard of what?
The Mushroom Man who lives down Rocker Lane.
I. From paints to charcoal, to clay to wood. Then to pencil and pen, then back to your roots of finger painting on cardboard.
You've always had this sort of love for drawing. Since you were little you can recall your mother had always talked about how you were such an artistic child. A crafty one at that. Your dad was always telling his friends that his child was always so expressive and imaginative whenever the topic was brought up. Continuing on keeping up with art along your adolescence, to middle school, to then high school, you felt like you knew what you wanted to do. That being why you decided to go pursue an art major.
The university you are going to attend, University of Arts in Atlantica, was where you'd be heading on over next. Its a funny feeling in your stomach really, moving out and all and going to meet new people as you drift away from your old ones. The feelings welt up inside you slowly, feeling a sad weight bringing you down. You'd be staying in a co-ed dorm, at least then you'd be able to hopefully meet new people and make more friends. That's one of the main things you were looking forward to. It's time to look on the positive side here, and as you make your daily affirmations to yourself you bring out your phone to go to your notes app to remind yourself of the good things that happened and what to look forward to.
I saw a man helping his old relative (not sure) down a street earlier. That was really nice.
I saw some black cats cuddling with each other near the grass yesterday
the weather is nice today, it's not too windy and the sun is out high
I was able to pack another box of my stuff, I should go reward myself now
I was able to send in my resume for a job application nearby. I should also reward myself because I did a good job at tending to it.
Oh, that's right. You recently did submit a job application. You submitted it to a bakery oddly enough.
Art comes in many different shapes and forms, and you personally had another interest. That being the culinary arts. For at least once in your life you wanted to experience the working life of a culinary student, and although pursuing it as a career plan wasn't your solid choice - it was one of the options. And thankfully enough, the man there who skimmed through your resume seemed rather gentle about your chances. Hopefully you get the job, I mean you have plenty of experience before as well with handling and decorating foods. That was the main thing you were interested in. Sure you do enjoy baking, but it was the expression of being able to decorate cakes and pastries there that you were more eager to do.
Trey was the person who introduced himself first, claiming that his family owned the business. After the whole process of submission for your intended new job, something blue catches your eye. A natural call of curiosity causes you to divert your eyes a little away from Trey- who was finishing up the bases of what's to expect- and see a tall man through the window of the kitchen door. He had teal short hair, a longer black length of hair tucked behind his ear and his eyes looked rather sharp and lifted from the side. If for just a moment of observation, Trey caught where your eyes were distracted at.
"Oh, well it's still business hours, you know. He's another employee working here as well. If you get the job you'll see him more frequently." He says it so casually, but you would really hope you do get the job. Fiddling your fingers a little, you show a bit of anxiousness but you keep it professional. "What are the chances of me getting hired? I'm really eager to get this position."
A thoughtful look is splayed on his face, his glasses framing them well. "Well your past work seems promising. It doesn't look professional enough for it to display but I'm sure with enough practice it may work. Just wondering though, you're an art student, yes? Do you think you'd manage the hours alongside your classes?"
His words were a little hard for you to hear but you greatly needed it, a set reminder that you really still are an inexperienced culinary artist if anything. However you proceed to give him a determined answer. "Yes, I'll manage. I will uphold my duties responsibly, please consider taking me."
"They seem eager, don't you agree Trey?" Both your attention is turned and directed on the voice who spoke from behind, the teal haired man coming forward. He had a black plain apron on with the logo of a clover on his right chest, a white chef shirt on as the sleeves are rolled up to his elbows. “Eagerness and experience are two separate things. I’ll consider it, don't worry.”
Not knowing what to say, the teal haired man turns his attention onto you. You both meet each other's eyes and his lips curve more upward to be more inviting and polite. “Oh how rude of me, where are my manners? You can address me as Jade Leech.” He goes over to shake your hand as a formal greeting, and ever since then things have been going alright. Would you look at that, you got the job! And you’ve already moved in, meeting friendly people from all over with wild stories to tell. “Ugh, such an extroverted thing to do. I could never.” Idia’s voice is made metallic through your phone as you tell him about how you plan on going to this frat party to welcome the new incoming people. It was a new time of your life, why not let loose and meet new people? “Your reasoning still stinks. Imagine all the sweaty smelly bodies you’d bump into there. Not only that but eee! So many loud normies! My HP would already max out by the time I get there, definitely not.”
“Look, I’ll be back soon okay? I want to try and enjoy this night before anything real happens like classes and work.” Bringing your coat on, you sling over a fanny pack over your torso with all the required things for what you can expect at this frat party. “If you don't let me know that you came home safely I’ll be adding modifications into that device of yours.” A simple reassurance is all it takes for him to hang up and with some worn converse shoes you slip out of your room.
Clink!
Here's to a new school life. Surrounded by other lively participants of party go-ers, you hold a drink of alcohol in your cup. Everyone seems to have a good time, the music is blasting, the people are dancing and enjoying their time, and you have crazy party go-ers here climbing the roofs and pulling crazy stunts. It's quite the impression really. Taking a step outside all the way to where the cars are parked from the frat house, you take a deep breath and catch yourself a breather. Idia was right for the most part, and for this to be your first time at a frat party it was definitely overwhelming. However one thing for sure was that you were able to meet new people and enjoy your time there, just needed a little break is all.
Little did you know though, that nearby deep in hidden trees and bushes laid a beaten up person. Most likely dead. No, definitely dead. For Jade Leech is always one to ensure that the deal is done. Frat parties, loud music, drunken party go-ers, it was all the perfect set up for him to strike and take advantage of. Who would know if just a person or two went missing? Especially ones who come by themselves. He’s got an eye for people you could say, with the way his eyes are arched up so meticulously. The location was just too good to miss out as well. Here it’s a little more isolated with vegetation growing around, the house being more secluded due to its bigger land. Blood is soaked into the dirt, his smile content that the earth is gaining some nutrition.
Oh, what a surprise. He sees a familiar figure in the distance leaning up against one of the cars on the dirt path. It’s you. He could strike, but it would cause trouble. You aren’t his target. At least not yet. He can play a patient game, and a patient game he will play. The future awaits many things for the two of you, so until then, enjoy your fresh new life and your new job. You clock in the day following tomorrow, where Jade will surely start to learn more about you. And as much as he will learn about you, you my dear reader, will surely start to learn about him much more than what ordinary people see and know about him behind closed, faux smiled, bloodied doors.
I hope this reaches the right audience, but to all my dark/horror/yandere enthusiasts
just know..... JADE IS A BAKER IN HERE WITH NICE MF ARMS><
Literally the only thing i was fixated on when I was writing this, I was like "oml yes Jade with them nice buff baker arms anfisdifbfiubwif Trey you arent gonna be alone in this✊🤞." I practically melted just thinking about it while writing this ^^;

A while ago, my brother and I visited a Thai restaurant near us (For context we're both autistic and white, which is important). He and I have two very different senses when it comes to food. He isn't much of a flavor person as much as he is a sensation and scent person, while I'm very heavily impacted by flavors, textures, and don't always care about scent-- I also have an affinity for sour/savory than spicy foods.
But anyways! I decided to get curry. It's a coconut curry base, which I know from making it several times in the past is not spicy, and usually the meat isn't heavily seasoned there. He got a Pad Thai and even asked for it's spiciest variant.
Despite being very good, the curry practically destroyed me from spice. My brother on the other hand? He was disappointed it wasn't spicy enough. Due to us both being sensory autistics in opposite ways, this is only heightened.
But now I'm thinking to myself that there's a high chance my brother and Jiaoqiu would both agree on the sadness of getting something less spicy than they wanted. He's not big on culinary, but there's nothing more connecting than our experiences with foods-- even the less than perfect ones.
... Actually they might have messed up our order. But still, good meal nonetheless.
Jiaoqiu: “Oh! I’m sorry to hear that it didn’t live up to your expectations…maybe I could make you my own curry sometime? I agree on the sadness of the dish not living up to what you thought it’d be, but maybe we could make a better dish together!~”

Lord of the Rings Culinary Culture Headcannons bc I'm bored.
This isn't based off of any source from the books this is just vibes. I love food anthropology though so.
Elves: They don't seem huge in agriculture to me, kind of because it seems tedious for them to do every year, forever, till they die. So instead I think they'd embrace a more hunter-gatherer approach, with certain areas cultivated so the plants pretty much take care of themselves. I also think they favour food that can be preserved like dried meat and jams so they don't have to worry about the food spoiling as fast. I've heard lembas bread can be made regardless of location, so I dont think it's a patiular grain, but more of a special process in preparing the grain or smth that's kept secret (a little like nixtamalisation). Additionally: their most elaborate meals tend to have a very long process to make- it's not unusual for preparation for a feast to begin months in advance.
Dwarves: I think they would have an emphasis on group meals, as more work can be achieved if everyone shares one big meal rather than going off to make individual ones. Spending the majority of their time underground, I feel like they eat a lot of tubers. I think they would at least originate from somewhere with geothermal pools, and to reflect this have a lot of boiled and steamed foods, as well as burying food in pots near the pools so the natural heat can cook it (I can't remember what culture but there's evidence of this being done with bread). Additionally, I think they'd be fans of pit ovens, rather than pots or cauldrons- using the heat from their forges to heat up rocks for them. [I think there's less roasting on a spit over a fire because the hear from theor forges would burn the food too quickly.] I feel they'd also be very good at fermenting, with halls dedicated to maturing cheeses or aging meat. Additionally, if they eat meat, it will likely be a large land animal like a boar or deer- not so much birds or fish because they aren't really adapted to hunting them.
Humans: they're honestly pretty standard. They were probably behind a lot of advancements, like preserves, but the majority of the time, it's either porridge or stew. I feel like they have the most diversity from establishment to establishment, for example if you went by the sea, a lot of communities use the salt to preserve their food, but more inland other communities may not have heard even of the method. Obviously the bigger the kitchen, the grander the meals can be and the more equipment they can afford, but villages usually have a community oven they can use for bread and pies. While the food itself is pretty standard, they're also the most adventurous in foraging, inadvertently making a lot of once-poisonous plants edible through natural selection, humans are usually thr first to try out a new food, as well as the first to find ways to make it edible.
Hobbits: as expected from a culture who values meals and food to that extent, hobbits are the culinary geniuses of Middle-Earth. In Ancient Rome, they had advanced cooking utensils, that after the fall of Rome, weren't reinvented till the 18th(?) century: Hobbits are like that. They have utensils for every food in every variety you can think of, and while it's unnecessary to actually have, and perhaps inconvenient to use, it's a point of pride and great social status. Not only do they keep incredibly well-stocked pantries, but they've very keen to experiment with new flavours and have a decent trade route for these reasons. Recipes are also a point of pride, and it's considered unspeakable rude to attempt to recreate someone else's recipe. While there are recipe books of all kinds in every house, family recipe books are often handed down in wills, and kept secret from others. Cooking equipment is also passed down in wills. While they also partake in standard agriculture, hobbits also often have their own vegetable gardens, where they grow their proffered ingredients to work with. In the perspectives of other races, they can be a bit snooty about food, however they're simply very well-educated about the matter. Certain cultures can identify more shades of colour, because in their languages they give each shade a different name- it's sort of like that, but with taste. ((Many hobbits are able to identify the type of salt used in a recipe.)) Additionally, they have several festivals a year where they partake in food competitions. They're big fans of using edible flowers in their flavouring

The whole idea of academia is that money is spent, often by the state, to support the creation and passing-on of knowledge. This is a very good thing for society as a whole, I think most here will agree. Unfortunately, it is restricted largely to specific kinds of knowledge, namely (as the saying goes) "book learning". There should exist a comparable system of social support for other kinds of knowledge, for trades and crafts and so on. The motivating example for this post is traditional crafts that are in danger of dying out—we are rich enough as a society to preserve these things, and their artistic and humanistic value is certainly no less than that of English literature or philosophy or any other humanities field that we are already widely funding as part of academia. But there's no reason the system need be limited to traditional crafts. Why not modern trades, like being an electrician or a car mechanic? Obviously trade schools exist, but the general backgrounding of skilled trades in American society is much remarked upon. Why not other things, like... martial arts? Cooking? Again, culinary schools exist, but they aren't run in the interest of the public good the way academia is, at least in theory, supposed to be—I've suggested before that perhaps we should employ chefs like professors, to experiment with new cooking techniques and make recipes with them in university test kitchens for peer review. Why can I not go to a "food conference" and taste the new foods being devised?
Obviously society has only so many resources to spend on this kind of thing, and we can't simply pour resources into every knowledge-creation or knowledge-preservation endeavor imaginable. But the selection which we fund at present seems biased to exclude a huge swath of the human condition and that disappoints me. And I admit, much of this is motivated by the fact that I think the spreading of knowledge—that is, the creation of new knowledge and the passing on of existing knowledge—is something worth doing almost in and of itself. Knowledge is an end worth perusing near-inherently. But I think even people who are not so on board with knowledge-for-knowledge-sake could perhaps get behind parts of this.
One way or another, something to think about!

The Bear: Season Two, Episode Nine - Omelette
This not-fully-plotted-or-planned post is the fruit of a conversation between myself and @unladyboss (including their observations of Carmy). We were supposed to rewatch THE SCENE from that episode to share our interpretations.
Tumblr media
But I tend to do too much which means I watched the whole episode.
It’s been months since I’ve seen Omelette. I certainly remember the significant moments. But, seeing the whole story, allowed me to gain more appreciation for this episode and the show in total.
The driving force – the theme of this episode was focus and unfocus. The writers beat us over the head with the amount of times the word ‘focus’ was said. Yes, I knew this was a crucial arc of the season but watching this play out was fascinating.
We, the audience, are not just told about focus but are also shown how the characters have become streamlined, honing their skills and talents - becoming focused.
In no particular order:
Ebra working on his Serve Safe Certification during prep.
Tina leading the other chefs with precision.
Natalie reviewing the upcoming weeks to keep revenue coming.
Richie commanding the pre-dinner staffing.
Gary and Fak stepping up to be the informants of customer experience/enjoyment.
Marcus using his creativity to craft new desserts.
Uncle Cicero supporting Carmen in those moments leading up to the soft open.
Sydney utilizing her voice to demand respect and to be vulnerable.
Carmen realizing that there is something so important in his life.
Each character was finding purpose, embracing it, and owning their worth. To me, they felt solid and assured. That is everyone except Carmy whose focus wavered throughout.
And that is his greatest fear. Consistency…calm – a focus of his own choosing.
He knows chaos. That’s what his brain and body have become accustomed to due to years and years of childhood abuse and the verbal abuse of that one NYC Chef. Frenzy, hecticness, hypervigilance, planning ten steps ahead, anxiety, disappointment, shame, guilt, anger…so much anger…
These are emotions and “coping skills” that Carmy has depended on his whole life. He tries to mask them, burying or transforming them into his culinary expertise. But here, at The Bear – back home, Carmen is faced with too much stability. He doesn’t know what to do with it.
The expectations that have been placed upon him (internally and externally) are a lot, sure. But he seems to roll with those punches. And he has managed to trust in those around him. That is overwhelming. Things are going fairly well in his life. That is overwhelming. He's dating and taking some semblance of control of his life. That's overwhelming. His vision for the restaurant he wanted to start with his brother is coming true. That’s overwhelming. He has a trusted person standing side-by-side with him in the BOH. That’s overwhelming.
Though Mikey is the catalyst to opening a new restaurant, it’s all the people who are here now that have made it work.
I don’t think Carmy can manage that knowledge. He’s so okay with being alone and driven and self-harming himself in the sense of constant work, lack of self-care, not eating properly, pushing passed exhaustion – you get the picture. He’s not okay in knowing that there are people who genuinely care about him and his dreams; and they have stayed.
People stay.
Sydney stayed.
I believe that’s why he thought of her during his panic attack. Being near her allowed the conversation about Sydney’s mom to happen. He can focus when she’s around. That’s why, when Syd corrected Nat that the fridge guy’s name was Tony, Carmy was in perfect sync. When watching that moment, I thought: “Jinx! You owe her soda!” LOL!
Then there’s the table scene which was utterly glorious. It highlighted his vulnerability concerning his fear dating Claire who was “great”. Carmen doesn't believe he deserves greatness. It's not for him. It's for everyone else.
Under that dang table, he showed his hesitations all the while noticing Sydney. He values her. He made sure she knew. Towards the end of that scene, the way he looks at her before turning away to go get THE gift, was wow. To me, it seemed like a lightbulb clicked in his heart and soul.
Sydney matters so much to him. He doesn’t want to fuck up for her. But he knows he will. He always does.

“Y’know— the kids would all make fun of you for having all of this” Gojo says while scrummaging through Shoko’s pantry shelves.
“Good thing I don’t invite them.” She says while sitting at her counter’s barstool inspecting an apple.
“I come over for cookies and you said ‘I have some’….” He lifts up a bag of flour and sugar. “Is this how you treat your guests…? You LIE to them!!” “You can make them yourself…. Plus you’re here so often I might as well make you do the grocery shopping.”
Gojo smirks and playfully tosses the bag of flour back onto the shelf. "Oh, I see how it is. Using me for free labor now, are you?" He leans against the counter, crossing his arms. "Well, I guess I can't argue with the opportunity to show off my culinary skills—“
Shoko rolls her eyes, taking a bite of the apple. "Oh, please. You'd burn down the kitchen before you even managed to crack an egg properly…. I've seen you struggle with a microwave."
Gojo feigns offense, dramatically placing a hand over his heart. "Hey now, that was just one time! And I have you to thank for saving me from that disastrous attempt at cooking. But it kept you entertained huh didn’t it.”
“Gojo…I almost called the fire department.”
Gojo chuckles, his eyes sparkling mischievously. "Well, a little excitement never hurt anyone, right? Besides, it's not my fault your kitchen appliances have a vendetta against me."
Shoko shakes her head, suppressing a laugh. "You attract chaos wherever you go, don't you? I should've known better than to let you near my pantry."
"Ah, but you secretly love the chaos, Sho. Admit it," Gojo teases, leaning in closer with a playful grin. "Otherwise, you wouldn't keep inviting me over to disrupt your peaceful little sanctuary."
Shoko raises an eyebrow, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Maybe I just enjoy watching you stumble around and make a mess. It's oddly entertaining."
Gojo's grin widens, his playful nature shining through. "Ah, so you find amusement in my misadventures, huh? I see how it is. You have a secret sadistic side."
Shoko lets out a soft laugh, shaking her head. "Sadistic? Oh, please. It's more like a guilty pleasure. Besides, it's not every day I get to witness a self-proclaimed master sorcerer struggle with everyday tasks."
Gojo feigns a dramatic sigh, his hand resting on his forehead. "Everyday tasks, you say? Who needs everyday tasks when you’re the strongest? I'm just expanding my skillset, Sho.”
Shoko playfully nudges his arm. "Expanding your skillset, huh? Well, perhaps one day you'll surprise us all and actually manage to whip up something edible in the kitchen. That'll be a real feat."
Gojo takes the apple from Shoko’s hand, “Gotta go grocery shopping first…I wouldn’t be able to manage in this sparse ingredient household.” He mockingly shivers.
Shoko chuckles and reaches out to take back her apple. "Nice try, Gojo. But don't worry, I'll handle the grocery shopping. I can't risk you bringing back a basket full of sugar and candy instead of actual ingredients."
Gojo pouts, pretending to be disappointed. "Aw, come on, Sho! You don't trust my impeccable taste in groceries? I have an eye for quality snacks, you know."
Shoko smirks, playfully raising an eyebrow. "Impeccable taste, huh? I recall the time you brought back a cart filled with nothing but instant ramen and assorted candies. Quite the gourmet selection."
Gojo grins, unabashed. "Hey, those are essentials! A well-stocked pantry is not complete without an assortment of instant noodles and treats in various flavors. It's all about the culinary experience, Sho!”
