Had this long and dramatic post all formulated, but then I decided, it’s ok to get that stuff out, but I didn’t want to speak it into the universe, instead, take a moment with me.
I was chatting with a colleague today, great chap, good friend, and we were discussing some work stuffs, his department/boss always have these completely unrealistic expectations that make it impossible for a review that is exemplary - I assure you, this guy is exemplary. In the conversation, I was telling him not to agree with this suboptimal assessment, to know his worth.
In that light, Do you know your worth? Are we demanding we be treated and respected as such? Do we allow peoples to take us for granted, abuse our kindness, undervalue us? I know I’m guilty, the funny part, and actually not too funny in reality, is that I damn near torque myself into a pretzel bending over backward to please, care for, give, so much, that often it leaves me un-nurtured and empty. And I have to ask, why? So as I’ve been having these thoughts, other ideas and ideologies came to me…. Why do I not feel I can be mad? Not give 1000% sometimes? Put myself out and take away from what I need for someone else?
It brought me to this desire I’ve had to participate in an upcoming workshop with my guru… ‘manifest your best’ that’s over the next month. I had initially dismissed because it would be too inconvenient for my family - I signed up for it! It’s geared to help cultivate good habits and traits, in a way we respect and include moving forward. I can’t think of anyone more than myself, that needs some self focus, so I’m attending. I can’t wait. I’ll be manifesting all over this mug. Get ready!!!!
Also to share some cheer, went OUT last night, with a girlfriend, to dinner and a show. First time in so long I can’t remember when. We had delicious sushi, imported Sapporo beers, and took in a live quartet cover of Queen - epic. It’s also her 50th and if you follow along, you’ll recognize my gal, from when I try to ‘channel Margaret’ using diplomacy and grace…. Because she’s so classy -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kids are back in their programs. Check.
Was able to have the teacher conference with Js teacher…. I can’t recall if I’ve mentioned it? She told me, and I quote, ‘well, as you know, he’s absolutely brilliant.’ She went on to say she feels he may not be challenged with the current level, also that he tested above on each section for MAP - vocabulary, spelling, math, science…. I was flummoxed. Not that I don’t think he’s smart and perfection personified, we just struggle tooth and nail, for him to read every night, to practice his spelling and his handwriting efforts, he just doesn’t care about upper/lowercase or spacing. It’s a chore day in and day out, apparently though, he’s a little sponge. He also may be skipping a grade, though I’m not pushing for that with his maturity, and I WANT him to be a kid. For as long as he can. Adulthood is underwhelming.
Work is operating without hiccups. Check.
Hubs still out of a job come January, though there are a couple of intriguing options….guess we’ll be finding out.
Mom will be entering a clinical trial in the coming weeks, there’s extensive work up involved, so it’s a process. They’ve decided to forgo the chemo as she hasn’t had good results, and the side effects for her have been so drastic.
I’ve also been trying to save a couple plants Jamis’ dreaded cat murdered -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In closing, @meishamakes tagged me for watching, listening too, reading and eats -
1) I can’t say the last thing I watched, I really don’t watch tv, if it’s on, the kids have a show or hubs a YouTube vid.
2) I’ve been jamming to Beebs and her moneymaker’s- a punk-ska vibe. Check her out - that chicks pipes - wowza
3) reading is the latest installment of a Sci-fi series I love - ‘the archangels light’ - it’s secular Incase you had an inkling, so, don’t go to it for finding religion (just a heads up)
4) had that luscious sushi last night (pictures above), i fast 16/8 everyday so no breakfast, lunch was a hodgepodge of some leftovers in the fridge I threw together because last night was a late one - I grabbed mini cucumbers and wrapped them in some Buffalo chicken lunch meat with some shavings of cheddar…. And a locally brewed kombucha - blueberry flavored
Now I’ll chillax in the tub, I’ve been back on my holy basil adaptogen I wasn’t sure would do anything, and I have to admit, I’m much more mellow when taking daily, less quick to snap. And in the take care of thyself fashion I’m trying to get started, I’m in the tub with a Manuka honey mask and my Bigfoot mug with a whisky cocktail -

Back in Canada!
This weekend gathering in Albany, NY was so much fun! Unfortunately I seem to have caught a cold which is making my mind a bit foggy, but hopefully I can jot down some of the highlights!
First of all, driving down with @insidioustickler @yourlittlettoy and @toadallytickles was a super fun time. There were some rockin tunes provided by Toad and Cece, and plenty of ‘Car’-aokee 😂. (And of course the occasional shriek from car tickles 😏)
Friday night was the pizza party at the hotel. This being my 6th big gathering now, it was nice to see so many familiar faces, and of course a few newbies! After dinner, Toad and I snuck off to our room to have a quick private session of the nsfw variety, before we were rudely interrupted 😂 don’t y’all know what the ‘Don’t knock it!’ door sign means!? 😂
That night there was a pool party, and everyone had a blast playing Marco-polo. I was feeling pretty tired after driving all day though so I headed back to the room a bit early.
Saturday started out with a spontaneous mini session with me getting tickled by all three of my traveling companions. I don’t even know how it happened! One second we are all just chillin in the room getting ready for the day, the next thing I know I’m tied to the bed😅
Later that morning there was an electro play workshop which was pretty cool. The instructor had this tool they could use to electrify themselves so their finger tips turned shockingly tickly 😳. I let her try it on me and omg it was a very strange feeling, but definitely in a good way. I really wanna get one!
They also had a room designated as the board game room, so we spent some time there in the afternoon. I won at both Sushi Go aaaaaand Unstable Unicorns. So there.😜
After that there was a rope demo which is always cool to see. So many pretty rope corsets and patterns! I definitely want to get into rope play more and I think Toad is going to let me practice on her 😛
Saturday night I participated in two sessions, both as a Ler. First I got to gang up on Toad with a good friend of mine which was a ton of fun 😏. He has sooo many tools omg. At one point we were using two electric toothbrushes AND two electric flossers at the same time. Everyone agreed that Toad is the most adorable 😉
The second session was with @redhead1533 in The Chariot. She had been instigating this one for a long time so there were a bunch of us who wanted to wreck her 😉 the highlight from this session was borrowing the fuzzy ‘monster glove’ with the hidden claws in the finger tips, and just wrecking her underarms 😈
That night there was also a ‘bar trivia’ night in the hotel lobby. I missed most of this but it seemed like a really fun time!
Sunday was a bit of a slower day for me. I hadn’t been sleeping the best, and my throat and sinuses were starting to feel a bit scratchy. At the time it didn’t seem that bad, but it’s clear now that it was the beginning of this cold. So I didn’t really get moving until the afternoon, but I was looking forward to the Jam at 3pm. Also, the room with bondage furniture needed to be booked in advance so I jotted my name down for 4:30. I wanted to try the new bondage chair 😅 ...but I may need to make a separate post on that!
After dinner I also got invited to help with @secretiveticklishhedge’s session as well! She’s a tough one, but once you find her spots it is so much fun to make her squeak 😁
But Sunday night I started dropping and I haven’t really felt like myself since. The drive home was good though! We actually got to stop near @awkweirdtato’s place and meet her for lunch! It was our first time meeting her in person so that was super fun! And she’s actually fairly close to us so I’m hoping we will see her again soon 🙂
Before I started writing all this it felt like the weekend had passed by in a blur and I was feeling kind of down about it. But going through and reliving all the moments as I wrote this has definitely helped bring me back up a little and remind me how amazing the weekend really was. It’s so special that events like these exist and bring together so many amazing people who all share one very special interest. I can’t wait until next time! 😊

Summary: Peter fakes sick to help Tony get out of going to an important event, but then later ends up actually sick. His mentor is a bit slow on the uptake.
Word count: 3,043
Genre: Sickfic, whump, hurt/comfort, humor
Link to read on ao3
A/N: I definitely took some liberties with this prompt, but hopefully you still enjoy the story :D Thanks to @xxx-cat-xxx & @sallyidss for beta reading and giving me ideas, and to @fandomsficsandfeels for inspiration for the plotline!
“I can’t believe this, Tony,” Pepper whispers from just inside the room’s threshold. Her back is to Peter and her voice is quiet enough that if it wasn’t for his enhanced hearing, he wouldn’t have registered it. “You’ve known about this award ceremony for months, and now, two hours before it starts, you’re telling me you can’t go?”
“I’m sorry, Pep, but what am I supposed to do?” Tony says, and Peter can hear the distress in his voice. “The kid’s practically coughing up a lung, and FRI says he’s running a fever—I can’t leave him alone like this.”
Peter pushes himself up from where he’s currently sprawled out on the living room sofa, his arms trembling from the effort. “No, no M’s’r Stark…” he rasps, “you can go. I’ll be fi—” he cuts himself off by hunching forward to hack out a few more horrible-sounding coughs.
Tony, dressed in a suit that Peter figures could easily pay for several months of his aunt’s rent, is beside him in three quick strides, immediately wrapping an arm around Peter’s shoulders to push him to a more upright position.“Hey, hey, easy, kid, easy…” he instructs, rubbing a comforting hand up and down on Peter’s back.
Pepper’s mildly irritated expression softens into one of genuine concern. Her long sparkly gown swishes behind her as she moves over to locate Peter’s water glass on the coffee table and perches herself on the edge of the sofa in front of him. “Here, take a sip,” she says gently.
As soon as the current coughing fit is passed, Peter nods gratefully to her and takes the glass with a shaky hand. “Thanks…” he croaks.
Pepper sighs, but there’s a sad sort of smile to her eyes now. She smooths a few of his curls back out of his eyes. “I’m really sorry you’re feeling so bad.”
Peter feels his face flush slightly. It’s one thing to have Tony see him like this, but it’s another thing entirely to have Pepper Potts witnessing. “It’s really not so bad,” he protests weakly. “I’ll be okay, I just—” He quickly places the glass back down as he breaks into more coughs.
Frowning, Tony presses the back of his hand to the kid’s slightly sweaty forehead. Peter shivers at the touch. “Sorry, kiddo, but May would have my head if she knew I left you alone in this state.” He shudders a bit. “That woman may be sweet, but she’s also terrifying.”
Peter can’t help but bark out a hoarse laugh at that. It’s true that May laid out some pretty strict guidelines before leaving Peter in the Starks’ care while she visits her college friend in Seattle, and he’s fairly sure that letting him die from bronchitis while Tony receives this year’s Green Energy Champion award would violate a few of those.
Turning back to his fiancée, Tony gives her a regretful look. “I guess I could ask Happy to stay with him, but…”
Pepper shakes her head. “No, you’re right,” she concedes. “He’s sick, and until Sunday evening, you’re his temporary guardian. You have to stay.” She gets to her feet again and straightens her dress back out. “I’ll accept the award for you and smooth things over with the organizers and the press.”
Tony stands up as well to plant a quick kiss on her lips. “Have I ever told you that you’re a lifesaver?”
She rolls her eyes good-naturedly. “Lifesaver? More like your entire National Guard service.”
While Tony waves her off, Peter lowers his gaze down to the blanket spread across his legs, picking at a piece of fuzz with his fingernails. “I’m really sorry…”
“You have nothing to apologize for,” Pepper assures, her tone kind. “It’s not your fault you’re sick—just kind of inconvenient timing. But I’ll figure it all out, don’t worry.” With a humorous huff, she adds, “This is far from the first important event Tony’s missed.”
“Hey, I resent that,” Tony grumbles. “I’ve been much better about that stuff lately.”
“True,” she allows, giving him an extra peck on the cheek. “It’s been nearly a decade since you blew off the Queen of England.”
Peter’s eyes widen, but Tony only rolls his own at the kid in response. “Oh please, as if you would want to fly six hours to drink some tea from a fancy cup with an elderly lady for some international magazine spread...”
“Anyway,” Pepper goes on, “I’d better get going. Good luck you two.” Glancing to Peter, she adds, “Feel better.”
Tony and Peter wave their goodbyes and Pepper makes her way out to the parking garage. They keep their eyes glued to the TV screen, which has been playing Brooklyn Nine-Nine reruns in the background, for several minutes before FRIDAY breaks the silence.
“Boss, Ms. Potts’ car has left the property. She is en route to the ceremony.”
“Oh thank god,” Peter breathes out, immediately untangling the blanket from his legs and pulling the single-use heating packs out from under his hoodie. “I’m about to keel over from heatstroke here. You know spiders can’t thermoregulate well.”
Tony rolls his eyes. “I was monitoring you—your temp barely even hit 100 that whole time. Don’t be so dramatic.”
“You owe me one,” Peter quips, rubbing at his throat. It’s actually pretty sore now from all the fake coughing. “I lied for you—to Ms. Potts of all people.”
“Technically, you never lied,” Tony points out, holding up his index finger. “You just presented her with some misleading information and she came to her own conclusions. Totally different.”
Peter quirks an eyebrow. “Is it, though?”
“It is,” Tony declares. He unknots his tie and tugs it out from his shirt collar before tossing it onto the coffee table. “Ready to finish your webshooter upgrades?”
“Yeah, alright,” Peter agrees. He gets to his feet with a small groan, feeling stiff from having sat curled up for the last few hours to really drive home the performance.
Ordinarily, this kind of deception isn’t something that Peter would endorse, much less participate in. But something about Tony’s reluctance to attend the event tonight seemed to run a bit deeper than the simple explanation he’d given Peter about having “better things to do” and these types of events being “so boring they’ll make your eyes bleed” would seem to suggest, so he’d agreed to play along.
(Secretly, Peter’s pretty sure it has more to do with the fact that the presenter is a man named Patrick Milton, whom a quick google search revealed to be a long-time friend of both Howard Stark and Obadiah Stane. That would definitely explain the way Tony’s eyes darken and lips press together a bit tighter every time Milton’s name is mentioned.)
“Let’s go, kid! Time’s a-wastin'!” Tony calls, moving in the direction of the workshop doors. He seems much more chipper already, and that alone helps to confirm to Peter that he made the right choice. “It’s not every day we get to play hooky.”
“Yeah, I’m coming,” Peter replies with a grin.
X
Over the next few hours, Peter and Tony tinker with the webshooter design, tweaking one mechanism or another to add different features. It’s exactly the kind of project Peter would usually be all over, but the longer he stares at the parts of the contraption on the table before him, the more he just wants to go back to the sofa and resume their Hulu marathon. A headache is setting in now and he’s weirdly tired, almost shaky, though that can likely be attributed to low blood sugar from the meager three bites of canned soup he pretended to struggle to swallow down earlier at lunch.
He figures he should probably stop Mr. Stark pretty soon to remind him that dinner is a thing that should happen (his mentor is notorious for working through meals and that’s something that just doesn’t fly with enhanced teenage metabolisms), but Peter’s stomach is feeling decidedly “off” now and food is rapidly losing its appeal. Not to mention he’s awfully warm all of a sudden, despite having stripped to only a t-shirt now.
“Hand me a three-eighths wrench, will you?” Tony asks without looking up from the project.
Peter nods, hopping up from his stool. But the moment his feet touch the ground, a cloud of darkness rolls over his field of vision and he wobbles where he stands. “Whoa…” he whispers, gripping the workbench for support.
Tony glances up and his brow immediately wrinkles in concern. “You alright?”
“Yeah,” Peter replies, blinking a couple of times to clear his vision. “Stood up too fast.”
Tony glances at his watch. “I guess it is getting pretty late.” He sets down his tools and wipes his greasy hands off on the towel. “I’ll order us some dinner. Pizza sound good?”
Peter’s stomach twists at the thought and he grimaces slightly—pizza definitely does not sound good at the moment. “Uh, maybe something else...”
“What do you want then?” Tony asks. He pulls out his phone and starts scrolling through it. “Sushi? Chinese? Indian?”
Each suggestion causes Peter’s stomach to churn and his face to drain a bit further of color. “You can just get something for yourself,” he mutters. “I think I might have the rest of that soup...” Or nothing, he thinks. Nothing is sounding rather good at the moment.
Tony rolls his eyes good-naturedly. “It’s just us now. You don’t have to put on a show anymore.”
“I’m not,” Peter protests. He presses his fingers to the throbbing spot near his eye. “I’m just not feeling super great…”
“Yeah, sure kid,” Tony dismisses with a disbelieving scoff, both of them moving toward the exit. “Hit the lights, FRI,” he commands.
Tony takes the liberty of ordering them both dinner from a local restaurant (“I got you a cheeseburger”, he informs Peter, who merely grunts in response) and then heads upstairs to take a shower. Meanwhile, Peter shuffles into the living room and curls up against the armrest on one of the sofas, tugging the throw blanket around him tightly. He’s cold now—shivering, actually. When did it get so cold in here?
Despite the aching in his head and the uneasiness in his stomach, his eyelids drift shut and he finds himself falling asleep.
X
“Hey, Pete, wake up.”
Peter groans and tugs the blanket up around his shoulders a little further, burrowing his face into the pillow. He hears the crinkle of a paper bag and the smell of greasy burgers and fries wafts toward him, causing his face to scrunch up.
“Food’s here,” Tony’s voice continues. “Better hurry up and eat before Pep gets back.”
“Hmph…” Peter manages to open his eyes and sits up on the couch, trying to blink away the bleariness. He feels like shit.
Tony tosses one of the paper-wrapped burgers unceremoniously into his lap. “Nice bedhead,” he remarks. “That’ll definitely help with our cover story, which by the way is that you had a nice quiet evening napping on the couch and taking your spidey-kid strength cough medicine and that’s why you’re on the mend now.” He tosses a few fries into his mouth.
Peter hums a bit. He’s only half listening—mostly he’s just trying to keep his breaths even. Maybe if he just holds very, very still, he can quell the growing queasiness in his gut.
Plopping himself down in the armchair, Tony flaps his hand as he goes on. “Tomorrow we can spin some BS about your super healing being responsible for your miraculous recovery… yada, yada.”
The burger still sits on Peter’s thighs, untouched. He blinks at it a few times and then has to swallow down the bile that’s starting to creep up his throat. Nothing has ever looked less appetizing in his life.
As Tony starts to unwrap his own burger, Peter suddenly comes to the conclusion that if he so much as sees that damn burger, he’s going to be redecorating the carpet. It’s probably only fair to give the man some kind of warning.
Peter draws in a careful breath. “Um, Mr. Stark?” he mumbles. “I feel kinda—”
FRIDAY’s voice interrupts over the speakers, “Boss, Ms. Potts has just pulled into the parking garage.”
Tony’s eyes widen and he scrambles back up to his feet, stuffing his burger back into the paper bag. “Shit. She must have left early.”
He grabs Peter’s burger as well (much to the kid’s relief) and shoves it back into the sack along with the fries, throwing him a regretful look as he does so. “I’m sorry—I’ll sneak you something once she’s upstairs.”
“’S’fine....” Peter murmurs as Tony hurries out of the room with the food. His mentor is out of earshot before Peter adds, under his breath, “Think I’ll jus’ go puke now...”
Peter’s mouth is rapidly filling with saliva and he figures he’s got about a minute, tops, before catastrophe strikes. He’s torn between wanting to move as slowly and gingerly as possible in the hopes that his meager lunch will stay down, and the feeling that he should just run for the nearest bathroom and pray that he makes it.
He ends up failing at both.
Easing himself up from the couch, Peter manages to take three steps before his stomach lurches. He leaps forward and changes course for the trash can instead, barely managing to get it under his chin before he’s retching miserably into it.
Between gasping breaths, Peter can hear two sets of footsteps approaching.
“Yeah, he sounds much better now,” Tony’s voice floats down the hallway in his direction. “The meds helped a lot. I think I’ll just let him sleep in tomorrow and his healing factor should kick this bug for good before—“
Both Tony and Pepper stop abruptly in the room’s threshold. Peter shoots his flabbergasted mentor a pained look before dropping his head back into the bin and gagging again.
Before he can resurface, Peter feels a gentle hand on his back. “Oh, Peter…” Pepper soothes. Addressing Tony, she whispers, a little accusingly, “I thought you said he was doing better.”
Snapping right out of his daze, Tony quickly moves over to join them. “He was, but that was before.” He grabs a hold of Peter’s upper arm. “It’s alright, I got him,” he tells her, starting to maneuver Peter toward the bathroom. “C’mon, kiddo, let’s get you sorted out…”
Feeling too weak to protest, Peter shuffles shakily in the direction Tony guides him, still gripping the trash can tightly to his chest.
Pepper casts them both a worried look. “Maybe we should call Cho.”
“He probably just coughed so hard he made himself sick,” Tony explains. Catching Peter’s gaze, Tony shoots him a look that’s somewhere between baffled and pleading. If Peter wasn’t so focused on walking in a straight line at the moment, he might have found it funny. “Right, Pete?”
Peter merely shrugs in response as his mentor ushers him into the bathroom.
“See? He’ll be just fine,” Tony promises. “I’ll take it from here. Thanks, honey.” And with that he shuts the bathroom door behind them, leaving Pepper in the hall.
The second they’re alone, Tony releases Peter’s arm and turns to face him. “What are you doing?” he whispers, dumbfounded. “I mean, I admire your commitment here, but she was totally buying it already. You didn’t have to go this far.”
Swaying slightly, Peter grips the sink counter to steady himself. “No,” he croaks. “I’m sick.”
“Right,” Tony agrees, nodding. “You’re sick. But we agreed on taking the respiratory route here, so suddenly going off-script is—”
Peter’s stomach clenches again. He pushes Tony aside and stumbles toward the toilet, yanking the lid up and leaning forward over the bowl before retching yet again.
When the current round of heaving tapers off, Peter glances up to see Tony staring at him, sudden realization dawning. “Oh, shit.” He moves his hand up to feel Peter’s overly-warm forehead. “You really are sick.”
“Told you,” Peter rasps. He’s still trembling, so Tony grabs the kid’s elbow and helps lower him down to sit on the floor beside the toilet. “This always happens…” he mutters.
Tony’s brow furrows. “What always happens?”
“It’s like my body knows when I’m faking,” Peter explains. “Tries to help with the act. Gets a little too enthusiastic.” He pauses to close his eyes and press his palm to his still aching forehead. “In fourth grade, May and Ben told the school I had chickenpox the week before summer break so we could go on vacation to Lego Land before all the prices went up.” He swallows hard. “Except I got a really bad fever the next day and we missed our flight.”
“Fuck…” Tony runs a hand through his own hair, exasperated. “I’m sorry, kid.”
“Yeah, and one time I faked sick to get out of a Spanish test and the next week I had tonsillitis,” Peter goes on, feeling his stomach starting to cramp again. “I’m telling you, karma sucks.”
“But I put you up to this,” Tony protests, his face stricken with guilt. “It should’ve been me who got sick then.”
Shrugging, Peter wraps one arm around his middle. “S’okay. Like you said, my healing factor will fix it soon.” He gives a weak grin. “Plus, now we don’t have to worry about Ms. Potts doubting the authenticity.”
Tony huffs out a quick laugh. “Yeah, now we’re just left with explaining why your ‘bronchitis’”—he puts air quotes around the term—“has suddenly morphed into something that’s got you puking your guts up.”
Peter grunts as he scoots a little closer to the toilet again, the nausea returning. “Yeah, I dunno...” He drapes his arm on the rim of the bowl and rests his heavy head on it as he awaits the next round. “Tell her it’s a spider thing?”
With a sigh, Tony sits down beside him and places a hand on the kid’s back. “I’m going to make this up to you somehow.” He starts rubbing gentle circles on Peter’s sweaty t-shirt. “You and May still up for that trip to Lego Land?”
“Sounds good, Mr. Stark…” Peter murmurs before gagging into the bowl again.

Aurora knew she was moping, but she couldn’t help it. Harry looked across at her from where he sat nearby, a smirk lifting the corner of his lips as he watched her.  “Would you stop that?” he asked with a chuckle, drawing his mothers’ attention.
“Leave me alone, H,” Aurora replied, noticing the way that Anne’s gaze flicked between the two of them in confusion.
“What am I missing?” she asked her son.
“She’s mad at me,” Harry explained, looking not at all put out by the fact.
“I’m not mad,” Aurora argued. “I’m in mourning.”
“You’re being ridiculous,” Harry laughed.
She rolled her eyes at him, remembering the conversation that had that had led them to now.
“Love, you know how I went to London a few months back to audition for that movie?” Harry had asked her. “I got it.”
“Really?” Aurora had cheered, throwing herself into his arms and hugging him tightly. “OMG! Harry I’m so proud of you.” She’d placed kissed all over his face before settling on his lips. “You’ll be fantastic.”
“I’ve got to cut my hair,” he told her. Her face had fallen, the fingers of her right hand instantly moving to his long curls to tangle in them.
“But I love your hair,” she had pouted. “How short does it need to go?”
“Military short.”
She let go of him, stepping backwards. “I hate this.”
“I’m sorry love,” he’s replied softly. “It’ll grow back.”
Now there she was, watching on as a hairdresser straightened out his hair, pulling it tightly back to the nape of his neck, scissors in hand. He laughed when Aurora winced, turning her head so she didn’t watch.
“It’s just hair,” he reminded her.
“Yeah and now it’s gone,” she sniped.
Anne chuckled as the pair continued to bicker while the haircut continued. When it was all over Harry took some photos of the ponytail and then he took his mum and fiancé out for lunch, hoping to snap Aurora out of her depressing mood by taking them to her favourite sushi bar.
xXx
Harry left for France a few weeks later, leaving Aurora in New York. She put on a brave face until he was out the door and on the plane, and then she hid herself away in her room. She felt ridiculous for being so dependant on him; the majority of their relationship had been long distance, but she had gotten so used to him being there every day since Christmas, that the idea of being separated for months was heartbreaking. Steve knocked on her door the evening after Harry left, letting himself in and sitting down beside where she was curled up on the bed.
“You feel like talking about it?” he asked softly.
“Not really,” Aurora mumbled.
“Do you want me to leave you alone?”
“No,” she replied.
“He’ll be back before you know it,” Steve promised, laying down to wrap his arms around her.
“It’s not just Harry being gone,” Aurora explained, curling into his side. “I should have been graduating next week.”
“Ever think about going back?”
“I don’t think I can. Just the thought of being back there has me shaking.”
“That’s ok,” Steve said. “I know Dad made a big deal about you going to college, but you don’t exactly need the degree.”
“Just feel like I failed though,” Aurora admitted. “I guess I’ve never really said that out loud, but I do. I feel like I was so close to finishing and that I’m always going to be a college dropout now.”
“You’re not a failure, bug,” Steve replied. “You have overcome so much, and you should be so damn proud of that. I know I am and so is your dad. You’ve got nothing to feel ashamed about. You’ve got your art and your music, and you don’t need a piece of paper to be successful and happy.”
“Thanks Pops,” she murmured, burying her face into his chest. “I’m so glad I have you and Dad.”
“Always,” Steve promised, “for anything you need.”
xXx
It was only after Harry left for France that Aurora realized how much she had enjoyed being back in the studio making music and now that he and his new band were gone, she missed it. She tried for an afternoon to work on her own but found the entire process too frustrating and ended up texting Mark to help find a solution
◊Aurora: hey can you find me a writing partner? I’m feeling inspired but need an extra hand both physically and metaphorically.
◊Mark: I’ll get right on it. Anyone in mind?
◊Aurora: no clue but I feel like you know me well enough to know who I’d vibe with.
2 days later she received a text from someone unexpected.
◊Niall: Hey babe, I hear you’re looking for a writing partner which is perfect because I’m not sure if you heard, but my band is on a break and I have a LOT of free time on my hands. What do you say I come hang out with ya for a bit?
◊Aurora: I’d really like that Ni and I’m pretty sure my dads will stop watching me every second of every day if you come stay with us for a bit.
◊Niall: consider me on the next flight… or at some point in the next few days, let’s be realistic.
xXx
True to his word, Niall arrived a few days later and the pair spent the day catching up on everything they’d missed since last seeing each other 4 months ago. Niall had been spending some much needed time back in Ireland with his family, but he had been excited when Mark reached out looking for someone to work with Aurora. They made their way down to the studio the second day of his stay and started kicking around ideas. For the most part, Aurora set herself up on the sofa, humming melodies and throwing out lyrics while Niall pulled out his guitar to accompany her.
After a few days of goofing around and not really coming up with anything either of them liked, Niall caught Rori’s eyes flicking to the grand piano in the corner of the room. “You miss playing?” he asked her.
“All the time,” she sighed. “I’ll get back to it eventually. Dad and Peter have already started work on a protype prosthetic and once I’m healed up, I can start getting it fitted.”
“I’ve never known you to be very patient,” Niall pointed out.
“Yeah it’s something knew I’m trying out,” she chuckled. “Some days I’m better at it than others. Just keep reminding myself that a few months is better than never.”
“Wanna try something?” he asked, holding out his hand for her. She took it, letting him pull her to her feet and lead her towards the piano.
“Ni…” she began to protest.
“Shut up,” he interrupted. “Just sit down.” She shook her head but did as he said, the fingers of her right hand automatically laying across the familiar keys. “You remember the notes for Night Changes?”
“Of course I do, but I can’t play Niall.”
“Just trust me,” he replied, nudging her side with his elbow where he sat next to her on the bench. “Play.”
She bit back any further argument and started playing the familiar notes. It was one of her favourites which was probably why he’d suggested it. Her eyes were trained on the ivory keys in front of her, so at first, she didn’t notice when his own hand lifted towards the piano, playing the left hand of the song. She smiled as he joined her, the timing slightly off until they found the right rhythm and then they both picked up the lyrics together. Her grin only grew as they sang, his right arm slung around her shoulder as they played together. As they reached the end of the song Aurora turned to hug her friend, unable to put into words how it felt to finally be getting back to the person she’d always been.
They spent the rest of the day at the piano, playing some of their favourites and just having fun. They lost track of time and as it neared dinner time, Steve came down to let everyone know food was on the table. Despite the fact that Tony told him time and time again that he could just have JARVIS let them know, he liked coming downstairs to get everyone, to which Tony would always mumble something about him being old fashioned and stuck in the 40s. He went to the recording studio first, opening the door slowly, not wanting to interrupt if they were in the middle of something. He paused in the doorway, a soft smile on his face as he watched the pair at the piano, his heart bursting with love at the way Aurora’s head was thrown back in a fit of laughter. Steve quickly left the room before either of them noticed him and he walked across the hall to the workshop where his husband and Peter were working away. “Tony,” he said when he entered the room, “drop whatever you’re doing. You need to come see this.”
Tony and Peter followed him back across the hall and all three of them watched on silently as Niall and Aurora played and sang. Steve wrapped his arms around Tony as the shorter man lent his head against his husband’s chest, both smiling brightly at their daughter’s joy. Peter snuck his phone out of his pocket, filming the two of them performing a terrible cover of Bye, Bye, Bye, having too much fun to be focusing on singing well. When the song finished, Niall caught sight of their audience over his shoulder, nudging Aurora with his elbow and drawing her attention to her parents and Peter standing in the doorway.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Steve said when the pair spotted them. “Just came down to tell you dinner’s ready and got caught up in the concert.”
Rori was still smiling as she stood up and walked across the room. Tony hugged her tightly when she reached him. “Good to see you at the piano again kiddo,” he murmured against her ear.
“Honestly felt so incredible,” she replied, smiling brightly as Tony threw his arm around her shoulder, leading her out of the room towards the elevator.

Kpop ship for yeoli-tranbolie
Sup my quarantine lads lol. I have a ship for @yeoli-tranbolie ! This is the first ship of the new group, so let’s start this group off fresh!
Based on your request I learned these things about you:
You’re 5′0 and African American
Lover of all types of music
A social-butterfly
A musician, you play the french horn
You enjoy singing
You also dance and like ballet the best
And in your request, you asked to be shipped with BTS, Monsta X, NCT, and WayV. Let’s dive right on in!
BTS: Taehyung
Happy babes who can vibe the f out, but also be jumpy happy-hyper babes. I can also totally see you two as more of the artsy couple too. You each would enjoy taking little classes and work shops to expand your skills and abilities, which would lead you two to taking the same music workshop class. The whole class would be split into groups and each group would have to make a performance. You and Tae would be put in the same group, so you would be spending a lot of time together with your group mates. Luckily, everyone is grown adults so everyone does their part. You guys put on a great show, and you’ll begin to find yourself hanging out with Tae, in a coffee shop, even more, despite the workshop being complete. You two would develop a huge crush on each other, and you’re both too shy to tell each other. You’re also worried that you two don’t like each other because you can’t get into each others brains, so you’re like “..crap.” But Tae would make the first move, like the babe would have this elaborate idea on how he was gonna tell you he liked you, but then he would get so nervous, forget what he was gonna tell you, so he was just like “okay, I like you.” And you two would soar as if there was never an issue or worry. I can see you two being one of those couples who enjoys staying at home. That doesn’t sound super exciting to some people, but I feel like you and Tae would much prefer to be in the company of each other, and you wouldn’t want to feel the pressure to conform to what people want you and Tae to be. And since you two are so into music, you enjoy chilling at home if you’re not working or doing school things, and you just listen to music. You enjoy searching new music styles together, also critiquing styles you don’t like and getting a taste for what you two have similarities and differences to. You two also enjoying doing research on artists and genres as well, so there is a lot of time that you two can spend days upon days watching documentaries on the history of classical music and Beethoven or Prince. You also enjoy joining Tae when he goes to the studio to see him work every now and then. Which Tae enjoys showing off a bit, and it’s honest really cute because he’s clumsy so sometimes he’ll forget a thing or two, or he will hit the wrong button, or even trip over a wire in the floor- it’s honestly really cute. PDA wise, Tae is a needy boy in this one. He’s not afraid to be like “hug me” and you give in bc it’s Tae. He also loves to steal kisses, so watch out for that, he’s sneaky.
Tumblr media
Monsta X: Kihyun
For this particular member, I can see you two bein the hyper social-butterfly type of couple. And omg imagine this, you two have that classic high school sweetheart gig going on and omg it’s so adorable! You’re smitten kittens who have been together for years. A lot of people and fans would be shock to know what your secret is to a happy relationship and to put it simply, it would be taking life day by day. Being flexible with each other, making each other laugh, living in the present instead of the future- that’s your secret. You two would be quite humorous to each other, so I can definitely see you two constantly making jokes to one another, being goody around one another to make each other laugh, and overall just hitting that humor spots where it counts. Communication would also be a HUGE factor for your relationship success. You can’t have a relationship without communication, and being completely honest and open with your feelings can work wonders for your relationship. You two would also be very observant of each other, it doesn’t matter what the change or topic is. Plus, you two like to keep the element of surprise in your relationship, it keeps the flame alive when you least expect it. It can also be for something that is goofy and small, like the cute stuffed alien riding a skateboard you saw at a grocery store. Kihyun will get it for you, TRUST ME. Along with being observant, you two can really read each others emotions and auras when you’re upset or if you need some space from one another, it’s completely normal, and it’s a virtue to have for you two. I also love the idea of you two working together to create beautiful music and beautiful dance. The harmonies, the way you move with each other..aaahhh, it’s magic! Imagine making a beautiful ballad together and making the SWEETEST harmony and dance to it, PURE ART MY FRIEND. P U R E ART. Another reason why y’all work is that you’re able to keep home life and work life separate. You have minor disagreements here and there for work, so you get to take your grievances out at work, then you’re peaky keen at home. Be prepared to be pampered because date nights are on Kihyun. Getting a little dressed up, going to get some good food, it doesn’t even matter if it’s ramen or fancy sushi, you’re together and that’s all that matters. You’ll take a little walk after if it’s not busy and you’ll sometimes find a little spot to sit and relax. PDA is very mild and supple. You don’t feel the huge need to put your love out there, so very soft and heart fluttering kisses, a lot of hand holding, and, knuckle kisses with “i love you’s” are his signature trademark.
Tumblr media
NCT: Yuta
Y’all are both fire crackers and I am living for it! You two definitely would keep each other on each others toes, there’s so much energy, in the best possible way. In my opinion, Yuta is very versatile. That being said, be prepared for a LOT of pick-up lines, one-liners, and cheesy jokes! To be honest, you’ll want to pull your and his hair out at some of them, because jokes aren’t always his best, but you can always laugh, rather it’s out of genuine laughter or embarrassment. You two are such cuties too, and it’s hard not to just grab him by the cheeks and tell him how cute he is. He’s that type of boyfriend that will drop a compliment bomb on you, and if you start to out do him, he will come back two times harder, he’s always determined to tell you know how much he loves you and wants you to know how pretty you are, inside and out. He’s also the type of boyfriend who likes to spoil you every now and then. Matching outfits or matching concepts are something he would enjoy, so he would know all of your sizes for clothes, and don’t be surprised if he comes home like “loOk wHaT i GoT, pHoTO sHoOt” And those photo shoots are always fun. I love to think that your and his hang out/date spot is in a practice room or recording room. You two don’t feel like big special and extravagant date night type of couple. Something like a practice room would serve as a perfect hang out spot for multiple reasons. One, you two can hang out and snuggle and relax, two, you can also be productive such as: Yuta working on an upcoming comeback, while you’re doing homework. I have this cute idea that Yuta would also want your hang out spot to be a practice room because he would want you to be near him when he worked. Yuta has a very busy man, which as we know, he works so hard, so he would actually prefer you near him when he worked. You would help him keep his stress level down and he’s also a confident boy, so he would want to show off a little, hehe. But you honestly don’t mind it, you love seeing him when he works, and you can also appreciate and let him know how good he does with his work. PDA wise, you two are adorable! I honestly believe Yuta is a snuggle bug. He loves to show his love to you in little ways, which would include the softest of hand-holding. He loves the size comparison to your hands, he also loves to touch you, so hand holding would be his favorite. Hugs, so many freaking hugs, this guys nickname could be teddy he loves to hug and snuggle so much. You don’t mind it though, because you know that if you ever need a hug or someone to hold, Yuta is right there by your side when you need it.
Tumblr media
WayV: Hendery
He is your smol bean who’s a bit chaotic at times. He’s the ultimate stress-reliving boyfriend, he’s goofy, sweet, and sympathetic. He also has his own little thing going on every now and then, which makes him even more irresistible. I like him with you most because he’s the cure to your stressful life. Life with Hendery is anything but stressful, I’ll tell you why. He’s the best freaking listener- he’s also an amazing advice giver. Hendery can shut up for two hours if it means letting you vent out all of your frustrations. Advice needed or not, he’s got your back, making him one of the best support systems you can get. He also is the king of support systems because he does these things called “you nights.” They’re simple nights in, most of the time they’re during the time when you’re having a lot of stress- when you need it most to be honest. He makes a blanket fort, fit with snacks, your fav food, pretty lights, and some of your favorites. Sometimes, he’ll even come up with fun little games to get your mind off of the stress you have, normally in a slightly destructing form. You can laugh while also taking out frustrations and anger without giving Kun a heart attack. Think of the wet paper towels thing in Friends! Hendery’s plans never seem to fail, because once you get to throwing those paper towels, your mind goes into happy mode, and all of the frustrations you have are wiped away in the blink of an eye. I also like to believe that Hendery’s curiosity card would be drawn because he would take a fascination with your ability to play the french horn. I used to play instruments myself, so I understand that you forget to practice every now and then, but Hendery would love watching you practice, he would make sure you remembered every now and then. Then, a real treat would be when Hendery would ask for a lesson or for some light tutoring. This cute son of a gon wouldn’t be able to get his mouth in the right position that’swhatshesaid so you’d squish his lips and cheeks into the right position, it would be so freaking hilarious. Date night is your specialty too! You make up for date night since Hendery does your “you nights”, so you make little thoughtful dinner dates or go out and do something that will help you two bond. Hell, sometimes you even try to cook for him! PDA is more reserved since I feel like he’s a bit more shy than Tae or Yuta. Hand holding is what’s he’s most comfortable with, to be honest, he prefers to love on you in private, he feels like he can be sweeter that way. But, if you want to woller all over him and give him the biggest kisses in the world in front of the world, he will let you, trust ya girl.~

[DMC5 Headcanons] Cooking with The Crew
Tumblr media
AN: I was thinking about Dante’s poor eating habits and I started thinking what dinner with the DMC crew would be like...
I’ve been trying to finish this headcanon for the past two days! But every single time I go to save my progress on mobile, Tumblr goes “Oopsey doopsies! Something went wrong :P” and never saves anything I do! So I guess I’m confined to writing only on my laptop now... >.>
Also... since Dante is the main character, it’s so flipping easy to write about him! It’s like, I don’t even have to think about what Dante would do, it just happens. >.> So... yeah, I’ve given my best when it comes to writing enough for the others.
DMC Crew: Dante, Trish, Lady, Nero & Kyrie, Nico, Vergil & V...
|Masterlist Link|
---------------------------------
Dante
It’s well known that Dante would gorge himself on pizza and strawberry sundaes if he had a choice.
Dante eats about anything, though, if you can make it for him
DON’T let him anywhere near the kitchen! Even boiling an egg is too much of a challenge for him
Somewhere, Dante yells at Shian, “Hey! I can totally boil an egg! It was that one time!”
”Yes, Dante, and you managed to not only overcook the egg, you boiled it until there wasn’t anymore water to boil!”
”Not my fault something caught my attention as I was cooking.”
”You can hardly call that cooking! AND you fell asleep!”
”I woke up in time, didn’t I?”
”THE ENTIRE SHOP SMELLED OF BURNING METAL!” (which smells really bad btw. And gives me a terrible migraine.)
Despite this, however, Dante would be the type to learn how to cook just to please his s/o. Dinner is still beyond him, but Dante eventually learns how to make a mean french toast.
Dante’s also the type to completely butter you up while in the kitchen, throwing compliments of how the food smells delicious. Saying that you’re a master chef.
He’s really doing it so that he can get extras later...
And he’s the type to swipe food as you’re cooking.
Make sure you didn’t do too much cleaning before you served dinner. Dante’s a messy eater most days, but if you force him... he’ll behave. Eva didn’t raise him to have no manners after all.

Lady’s had to look after herself for a long while.
She was raised to eat well, so Lady isn’t really picky about what she has for a meal.
She does have a fairly average sized repertoire of recipes that she can cook well.
Though most of the recipes that Lady can make were taught to her by her late mother.
By cooking the meals that her mother had when she was still alive, Lady kind of feels like she still has her mom.
When she gets the taste of something just right, you can see a faint sparkle of happiness that hints that Mary hasn’t completely lost herself.
She doesn’t trust Trish in the kitchen.
Lady has a large appetite.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trish
Trish... she once short circuited a toaster... don’t let her near too many kitchen appliances, alright?
She can handle simple cooking, like pan fried eggs... pasta... but nothing too complicated.
Trish is content to eat whatever she can get her hands on, whether it be pizza or some expensive sushi at Dante’s expense.
She’s from the Underworld, so she has a monstrous metabolism
Trish honestly doesn’t care that Lady doesn’t like her using the kitchen, if someone is willing to cook for her, she’s all okay with being lazy.
That being said, Trish also doesn’t appreciate it when people assume she can or can’t cook. If she feels like cooking, she’ll cook damn it!
Vergil & V (Because they are essentially the same person)
Vergil isn’t picky about his food so long as it’s healthy and nutritious.
Like their personalities, Vergil is the complete opposite in regards to how he and Dante eat.
Vergil doesn’t like junk food... much...
He has a bit of a weakness for cookies
Eva used to make the most delicious chocolate chip cookies ever (so moist and soft mmmm)
So having a soft warm chocolate chip cookie brings back feelings and memories of a better time. Of course Vergil is never straight forward with his feelings, so he feels love, happiness, sadness, and bitterness all at once. Makes it so that before DMC5, he’s only slightly able to enjoy his favorite treat.
Out of the twins, Vergil was the one that helped Eva the most with chores, going so far as to learn how to cook basic recipes to make his mother’s life as a single parent much easier. He’s such a mama’s boy, that’s why he was so butt hurt when she never found him. (*Shian can feel Vergil glaring daggers at her back. She stares back at him cooly. “What, you’re mad that it’s true? I love you, but get over yourself.”)
Vergil doesn’t like to flaunt his culinary skills, but at the same time he doesn’t like it when people think he can’t cook. He’ll take it as a personal affront.
If he’s learning a new recipe, you can guarantee that he’s going to perfect it. There is no such thing as half-assed for this man. (*Shian: Except for relationships... [Vergil’s glare worsens])
As V, he is much more open about his love of cooking.
Given that V is physically unable to do much when it comes to fighting, he relishes in being able to cook a delicious meal... all while having that mysterious cocky smirk on his face. (*Shian: Ugh I wanna hit his face with my face)
V will occasionally make a few of Eva’s recipes in order to feel closer to his mother. Shadow would purr in contentment, but Griffon would tease V that he “misses mommy dearest.”
Nero & Kyrie (Because they are the OTP of this fandom)
Let me say that if I’m going to write about Nero, I absolutely HAVE to write about Kyrie as well!
Well... it’s already been stated that Kyrie always makes too much food, but it’s only because she’s used to feeding three people. Nero, herself, and her brother Credo. Even though Credo died during the events of DMC4, Kyrie hasn’t really changed the amount that she makes. She doesn’t seem to realize it either...
Nero never says anything because he doesn’t want Kyrie to be sad, and he’ll give a stern talk to anyone who tries to tell her.
Nero, for his part, knows how to make the basic breakfast... coffee... instant noodles... he’s never really had to cook because Kyrie and Credo have always looked after him.
If it’s for his lady love (or if you challenge him) he’ll learn how to cook. (He’s ugh... pretty petty...)
Nero doesn’t like tomatoes or mushrooms (*Shian: which is a shame since I love both), but if it’s in Kyrie’s cooking he’ll eat everything on his plate.
If Nero isn’t able to finish the food on his plate, he starts to feel extremely guilty for wasting Kyrie’s hard work... Kyrie will also make him feel guilty by saying that it’s fine that he can’t finish... and then proceed to make a sad face. (It’s all in good fun though. They just love teasing each other.)
Nico
Nico likes to pretend that she doesn’t know an ounce of cooking.
THis is a complete LIE!
NOT ONLY does she know how to cook. BUT she’s a better chef than even Vergil at times. (... don’t tell him that though)
Nico learned how to cook from her grandma because she idolizes everything about the Goldstein matriarch. As a child, she observed her grandmother in the kitchen and the workshop because Nell did everything with a fierce passion.
Southern food is an art as much as weapon-smithing is, and Nico painstakingly seasons her meals with just the right balance and presentation
Anything not up to par usually gets scrapped or fed to a homeless person
After meeting Nero and Kyrie, Nico has made it her mission to mooch off whatever meal Kyrie prepares. Not only because Kyrie is a pretty great chef, but because not having to cook means more time to focus on her new projects.
I’m sorry if it seems like I don’t treat other characters the same as some. But some characters only appear a handful of times in the series as side characters, and it’s just URGH My imagination will only work so much when I don’t know a character!
Imagine what would happen if there were an army of clones of tony tony chopper.
I know you didn’t technically ask, but ye shall receive anyway because there was no way I couldn’t write a story on this. Behold, an army of Tony Tony Choppers featuring Good Dad Zoro:
Look at All Those Choppers!
Chopper’s hard reindeer hooves thunked against the wooden deck of the Thousand Sunny as he tottered out of the bowels of the ship to stroll out onto the main deck; as he walked out of the door, the loud clanking of his hooves became muffled by the embrace of the cushiony, green, grass-like carpet that spread across it, courtesy of the industrious and borderline over-the-top shipwright Franky. The aforementioned cyborg was currently stretched out on a beach chair beside the balustrade of the ship, hands behind his head, sunglasses on his eyes, and a little bit of white sunscreen shining on his metal nose as he soaked up the sun’s warming rays. Chopper really wasn’t sure how a man that a majority metal could get an appreciable tan, but the doctor was at least glad that he was taking the appropriate steps to avoid major sunburn and eventual skin cancer, at least. Zoro was asleep, as usual, propped up against the mast, Robin and Nami were on the third level of the ship (Nami was watering her tangerines and Robin reading one of her many voluminous history tomes), Sanji was in the kitchen preparing lunch from the delicious aromas pouring out of the slightly ajar kitchen door, Brook was probably down in the bowels of the ship sitting in the sitting area gawking at the fish swimming by the glass sides, Usopp was in his workshop working on the latest of his modifications for his slingshot, and Luffy was perched on the figurehead of the ship screaming into the wind- just a usual day aboard the Thousand Sunny.
Since everyone was too busy to do something fun with him, Chopper was forced to find his own source of entertainment for the day; he walked to a bucket of fishing rods in the corner of the main deck and picked out his special fishing rod, a child’s model that was the perfect size for his little reindeer frame, before tottering over to a barrel beside the side of the ship. With a grunt of exertion, he jumped up and grabbed onto the rim of the barrel with the rod clenched in his teeth, his feet kicking wildly as he pulled himself onto the top of the wooden container. He sat on it for a moment, wheezing to catch his breath, before making himself comfortable and casting his line into the water with a contented sigh. The water was calm today, barely lapping at the sides of the ship, and spread out like the shiny surface of a glass table across the horizon. The bobber made tiny ripples in the water as it shifted in the current, and Chopper hoped that below the opaque surface of the sea a tasty fish was circling the bait on his hook, ready to bite. His mouth began to water and he giggled a bit as he imagined the delectable bite that Sanji would cook up. He especially hoped that it was a large catch; because he was so small, he could never hook the big fish by himself, Zoro or Sanji would always have to help him reel it in.
This time, I’m gonna catch it by myself! They’re gonna be so proud! He thought in anticipation and wiggled a bit on the top of the barrel. He froze, however, when he felt the fishing rod twitch; he leaned forward slightly as he watched the bobber jiggle for a second, and then gasped when it was sucked underneath the water in one swift motion. He jumped to his feet on the barrel as he whipped the rod back with all his strength, and a beam of satisfaction appeared on his furry face when he felt the fish jerk on the line, obviously hooked. His front hoof frantically whirled the spindle of the rod to draw in the quivering line, and from the force working against him, his wish of a large catch had been granted.
“Ahahaha! I got a big fish, I got a big fish!” he squealed as he did a little dance on top of the barrel. In his glee, he forgot for a moment just what he was going up against and let a little too much slack into the line. His elation quickly morphed into acute fear as he was lurched forward, right off the barrel over the side of the ship and into the open air. A shriek spilled from his mouth as the bright blue ocean water came up to meet him. I’m gonna droooooooown!
Then, instead of falling, he was just hanging suspended in open space. He blinked his teary eyes for a minute, puzzled, and gazed down at the still-calm ocean water below. He then wailed and flapped his arms and legs about frantically because he had no idea what was happening.
“Chopper, relax. I’ve got you.” The frightened reindeer glanced over his shoulder as he was addressed to find Zoro leaning over the edge of the ship with a firm grip on the back of his striped shirt, holding him aloft. At the sight of the swordsman and obvious realization that he was safe, Chopper deflated like a balloon, immensely relieved; the man easily pulled him back over the edge of the ship and set him safely down on the barrel, then grabbed the rod- which he had miraculously managed to hold on to despite his panicky fit- from his hooves and with one powerful jerk brought a slippery, flopping fish onto the deck. His smile instantly fell off his face.
Chopper sunk down onto the barrel in disappointment; the fish was barely bigger than himself, hardly the trophy he had thought it was, and frankly dull-looking, just your average, every-day silvery fish. Chopper felt tears sting the corners of his eyes as he felt Zoro’s intense gaze on him; though the swordsman only had one eye, his glare still had the intensity of a lion’s. Chopper just knew that he was going to be scolded for doing something so obviously reckless. His bottom lip wobbled pitifully. He knew he was small and not such a beastly fighter as Luffy or Zoro, but that didn’t mean he had to be protected all the time. He wanted to be tough too, but no matter how hard he tried, things ended up like this a lot.
“I’m sorry,” he sniffled before Zoro could get the chance to chastise him. “I just wanted to catch a big fish… I caused all that trouble and look at it, it’s not even that big…” Wallowing in self-pity as he gazed miserably at his pathetic catch, his tiny shoulders were drooped and his head hung low; he could not even bring himself to look up at Zoro because he knew there would be an angry, disappointed expression on his face. He tried to keep the swordsman from knowing that he was crying, because he knew Zoro would call him a weakling for crying, too, but it was hard to hide the quiver in his squeaky voice or the tremble in his shoulders. Chopper just sat there pitifully, just waiting for his punishment. Then, unexpectedly, he felt Zoro’s big, rough hand plop down onto his head, squishing his hat down as he affectionately patted him.
“What are you talking about? That’s a great catch- right, Luffy?” Chopper looked up with his black eyes swimming with tears as he smirked down at him before nodding his chin at the captain, who had hopped down from the figurehead and strolled over to investigate the commotion, and, subsequently, Chopper’s prize. Luffy was squatted down next to the hyperventilating fish with a stupid grin, poking the poor creature in the gills.
“Hell yeah! Sanji can make us all a great snack with this! Shishishishi!” he snickered devilishly as he picked up the near-dead fish by the tail and hopped to his feet while cupping his other hand to his mouth. “Yo, Sanji! Catch!” he hollered across the deck of the ship. When the kitchen door opened further and the blonde cook appeared, the captain wasted no time flinging the hapless fish and sending it hurtling towards him.
“What’re you hollering about?” Sanji snapped back while standing there with his hands on his hip. He made a plfffft noise as the slimy fish smacked into his face, and he stood there stiffly as it slowly slid down his face while Luffy cackled hysterically, rolling around on the deck holding his belly while he kicked his legs. When the fish finally slipped off Sanji’s chin and landed on the deck with a wet slap, the cook was scowling in irritation and had a vein popping out of his head. “Luffy! You idiot; watch where you’re flinging shit!” he yelled at him before bending down to retrieve the fish with a weary sigh. He held it up by the tail, rubbing his chin as he considered it thoughtfully. “I could make some decent sushi with this… Thanks,” he said before whirling on his heel and disappearing back into his sanctum to work his magic on Chopper’s catch. The little reindeer was still huddled on the barrel.
“Did I really do a good job?” he murmured aloud, looking up at Zoro with hopeful eyes, and the green-haired man flashed him a grin.
“Sure did, but next time, just make sure someone is with you, Chopper. We can’t let our little fish-wrangler become fish food, now can we?” he mused and patted him on the head again. Under the praise and affectionate caress, Chopper snickered in delight and beamed. He isn’t mad, and more than that, he praised me! I did a good job!
Chopper felt like he was walking on clouds for the short time that Sanji spent preparing the fish. The rest of the crew, attracted by all the shouting, had meandered out onto the deck and given him the opportunity to dramatically re-enact his battle with the fish with just a wee bit of embellishment, and thankfully Zoro didn’t contradict him, only sat leaned up against the side of the ship with his arms crossed and approvingly nodding along- or bobbing his head in his sleep, who really knew? The crew was enthralled with his story, gasping every time he dramatically whipped his arms in his re-enactment of the grapple and cheering at his victory. When he was finished, he rubbed his hoof under his nose with a great big smile as they all complimented him on his great contribution to their lunch, and with no time at all Sanji was strolling out brandishing a tray of beautifully crafted sushi. “As the brave wrangler of the fish, I think it only fair that Chopper be the first to try it, don’t you agree?” he grinned and held out the tray in front of him. Chopper breathed in sharply with a watering mouth as his hungry eyes drank in Sanji’s masterpiece.
“No way! I wanna try it!” Luffy whined and stretched his hand over Sanji’s shoulder in an attempt to swipe a piece, but Sanji swiftly whirled about and crushed his rubbery hand underfoot, leaving the captain squirming and whining while the cook glared at him sharply.
“Stop being rude! You’ll get yours in a minute!” he snapped before turning back to Chopper with a serene smile. “Now, here you go, Chopper,” he said and held out the tray again. Chopper beamed as he picked up a piece of the yummy-looking sushi and popped it into his mouth; immediately his face scrunched up in delight at the savory flavor of the fish and the delightful chewiness of the rice.
“It’s delicious, Sanji! Thanks!” he beamed, immensely glad that his catch had produced such a tasteful creation. As Sanji straightened up to give the rest of the crew a piece of the sushi, Chopper’s face immediately went blank as a tingling sensation began in his body, making his fur stand on end. “Um, Sanji… I-I don’t feel so good,” he whispered as his stomach began to flip around uncomfortably inside of him, and he grimaced as he tenderly held his furry belly. Sanji hurriedly slapped a piece of sushi that Luffy was about to inhale, sending it flying into the sea much to the hungry captain’s disappointment, and looked at the reindeer incredulously.
“What?!” Chopper was too preoccupied with the strange bristling sensation to respond; he sunk down onto his bottom on the carpeted deck, quivering and whimpering as he held his stomach and felt like all the cells in his body were pulsing. Abruptly the strange feeling ceased, and he exhaled deeply as he melted against the deck.
“Man… That was so weird, guys. I dunno what just happened,” he laughed lightly and looked up with a smile, then took on a confused expression when he realized the entire crew was staring at him open-mouthed. “What is it?” Still gawking shamelessly, Nami pointed to his left, and as he turned his head to look at what she was motioning to he found his own face staring back at him. He and the other face screamed at exactly the same time and jumped to his- their- feet. “What’s going on?!” they wailed in unison.
“Hahahahaha! There are two Choppers! This is awesome!” Luffy howled in laughter, obviouslt excited at the bizarre development. Sanji scowled as he whacked him over the head with the empty tray, as he had tossed all of the apparently poisonous, clone-producing sushi over the side of the ship.
“You idiot! This isn’t funny! What if he clones indefinitely?” As he brought up the prospect, the fuzzy feeling spread through Chopper’s body again, and next thing he knew there were four of him standing on the deck. With all perfectly-times wails of duress, they began running around in circles with their hands on their hats, crying, and it made Chopper cry more that his clones were all behaving the same way he was, because now he wasn’t even sure if he was the real Tony Tony Chopper! What if he was a clone and just believed that he had eaten the sushi, but they were just memories of the real Chopper that he had just supposedly sprung from? The crazy idea made his brain and heart hurt, and he plopped down on the deck in miserable tears. There were eight of him now, all racing around the deck in states of panic or depression.
“There has got to be an antidote to this,” Robin frowned, and using her devil-fruit powers, used her hands to bring a set of books from within her library and began rifling through them all at once with her real hand on her chin.
“How do we know which one is the real Chopper to give the supposed antidote too?” Usopp cried, and when Chopper and his now-fifteen clones all chimed in unison that they were indeed the real thing, he shrieked at high volume and climbed halfway up the mast, quivering like a leaf as he hugged it for dear life. “This is so weird! What if it’s contagious?” Chopper, meanwhile, was on the deck sobbing again at his identity crisis and the idea that the crew was unable to tell him from his clones.
“Calm down, Usopp, it’s obviously from the fish,” Nami snorted and crossed her arms with a thoughtful frown. “We have to do something quickly, or this ship is gonna sink under the weight of all these Choppers!” She then jumped as the population of reindeer doctors rapidly doubled, leaving them surrounded by the short, furry clones.
“Waaaaah! Get a doctor!”
“Wait! I am the doctor!”
“No, I am!”
“Waaaaah! What if I’m a clone?”
“Somebody, help!”
The deck was a chaotic, bustling mess of the reindeer running to and fro or just plopped on the floor radiating sadness and doom, while the much taller members of the crew were jostled around. Brook and Luffy were enjoying themselves, at least; Brooke was loudly singing a tune while Luffy was flitting about picking up each reindeer in turn to comment on how they were all identical, which furthered their identity crisis and made them bawl more, to which Luffy would apologize and try to calm them with little effect. Chopper- or, the one who thought himself as the true Chopper- had given up wailing and was just miserably sitting on the deck sniffling, because what he had thought had been his triumph had dissolved into yet another messy situation.
If I hadn’t caught the fish, this wouldn’t have happened… he thought pitifully as he rubbed his teary eyes. He knew he was good for his medical knowledge and some level of fighting ability, but when he did things like this all the time, when would the Straw Hats decide that his cons outweighed his pros? He looked up when Robin gasped.
“Here it is. Chopper caught this fish, right?” she asked and waded across the sea of Choppers to show Sanji an illustration in the book she was holding. When he nodded in affirmation, she scanned the accompanying paragraph thoughtfully. “It’s called a clone carp. Its cells can survive up to several hours without the brain, even when fileted. When eaten raw, the fish’s live cells copy the genetic information of the person who ingested it, express it, and mingle with their own cells, reproducing by budding at an astonishing rate…”
“That’s real nice, Robin, but how do we make him go back?” Usopp yelled down from the crow’s nest. Several of Chopper’s clones had stopped freaking out and were now having fun, climbing up the mast and all over the banisters with giggles. Franky was poking them off the latter with the round end of a broom and then rapidly turning it around to sweep them down the stairs, sending them tumbling down to land in the wiggling, suffocating mass of brown reindeer fur. Chopper, or true Chopper in his mind, was nearly suffocating in the crowd and had climbed onto his barrel to escape death. The historian casually used her Devil Fruit powers to brush off clones that were trying to scamper up her body while she read the tome.
“Ah, here it is. He just needs an apple.”
“Are you serious?” Nami screeched from the top level; she had rushed to the aid of her tangerine trees, where the Chopper clones were braving the navigator’s wrath to try and pluck the lovingly tended fruits from the trees for a tasty snack.
“Woohoooooooo!” Luffy howled as he swung from the sails, a few of the reindeer hung off him crying from the fear of the height.
“The small traces of cyanide in the apple seed will apparently counter-act the fish’s toxin. It’ll cause the real Chopper to stop dividing by killing the fish cells in his body. The clones themselves aren’t dividing- we have to find the real Chopper and give him the apple. The clones cannot sustain the host DNA and express it without guidance from the parent cells, and will rapidly revert to regular clone carp cells.”
“Get all the apples we have, shitty cook!” Zoro yelled, using the scabbards of his sword to pushed the writhing mass of reindeer aside as he sloughed across the deck towards the kitchen.
“Shut up, kelp-head!” Sanji shot back as he dove into the kitchen. There was the clamor of banging pots and a stream of curses, and he came out with his chest heaving and a clone of Chopper on his head. “We only have one! Where’s the real Chopper?!” he said breathlessly as he pulled off the one on his head and inspected it with a deep frown. Chopper jumped up on the barrel to scream that he was there, but his voice was lost amongst the ocean of his clones that all agreed with him. His bottom lip quivered again as tears flooded his eyes. Was he really the real one? All the other clones were just as sure as he was. He plopped down on the barrel with a miserable sniff, until Zoro glanced in his direction, his one good eye trained on him.
“Give me that!” he grunted and snatched it from the cook, and held it high above his head as he began wading through the vast collection of what he believed to be clones towards Chopper. His little heart swelled when he realized that Zoro had managed to pick him out of the vast crowd, and he jumped up and down on his barrel waving his hooves.
“Zoro! Zoro, I’m here!”
“I’m coming, Chopper! Damn, there are so many of them!” he grunted as he narrowly avoided having the apple swiped from his hands. It made Chopper even happier to see that none of the crew had even questioned Zoro; they all moved into swift action to clear his path.
“Sorry, fake Choppers!” Sanji grunted as he jumped in front of Zoro to swing his strong leg around, carving a path through the rising wall of shrieking, crying reindeer. Chopper cried out and grabbed the barrel as the ship began to sway back and forth under the weight and collective movement of all his clones, causing the barrel he was perched on to begin sliding across the deck. He gasped happily when he realized he was sliding toward Zoro, but then the boat shifted with the vast surge of clones and he began sliding backwards towards the figurehead of the ship. The Choppers had exceeded the capacity of the deck and were dangerously close to spilling over the sides, and since they would have inherited the Devil Fruit and its inability to mix with ocean water, they were terrified to fall over the sides and were clamoring even more. Chopper wailed in duress as Zoro and the ability disappeared from his sight amongst the turmoil.
“Zoro! Toss it here!” he heard Luffy yell, hanging from part of the sails. He stretched his arm to pluck Chopper from the barrel by his shorts, pulling him up into his arm with a snicker; Zoro was just a smudge of green hair against the brown mass, but Chopper could see as he wound up his arm and chucked the apple into the air. Luffy perched Chopper on his shoulder to catch the red fruit, and was grinning widely as he held it up to the reindeer; however, before he could take it and eat it, an army of his clones came unsteadily tottering across the wood to grope for the apple, all claiming to be the real him. Chopper screeched as they clambered over Luffy, making him totter unsteadily on his shoulder while Luffy played like a contortionist to keep the life-saving fruit out of their reach.
“Back, you scoundrels!” Usopp called from the crow’s nest, sending a rain of pebbles from his slingshot down onto the perpetrators. They went falling down into the fluffy, pilllowy collection of their brethren, crying and holding their heads.
“Hurry, Chopper! We can’t hold them off much longer!” Franky shouted from the second deck, nearly buried under a mass of them. Chopper watched as Brook went sailing by, apparently crowd-surfing the Choppers while chortling contentedly. Chopper stretched out to take the apple from Luffy, but in the process unbalanced himself and slipped off his lanky arm. He screamed wildly clutching the apple to his chest as he plummeted into open air for the second time that day; he heard the clones below him surging upward with groping hooves, eager to claim the precious fruit from his hands. He squeezed his eyes shut as he prepared for his doom.
“Gotcha!” he heard Zoro grunt as he landed securely in his thick arms, and he looked up with a gasp to see the swordsman grinning down at him widely. Sanji had launched him up with a well-timed kick. “Quick!” he added as a tower of Choppers came rising up to meet them, and he flipped in mid-air to narrowly avoid them, knocking it aside with a blow from his scabbard. Chopper wasted no time in chomping down on the apple, core and all, and as soon as he had popped the last bit of seeds in his mouth, he felt the strange tingling sensation in his body again. Below him, the sea of his clones abruptly stopped moving, blinking, before rapidly turning into flopping, wriggling clone carps one by one with small pop!s. The crew made short work of flinging them off the deck back into the sea. Just as Zoro landed on the deck with Chopper securely in his arms, Sanji had sent the last fish hurtling into the horizon with a grumpy “And never come back, you shitty fish!”
“Chopper? Are you okay now?” Nami asked as he was set down softly on the deck, pausing to grab Luffy by his ear and yank him over to pry a clone carp from his hands and fling it off the deck. As the captain grumbled under his breath and slumped down in disappointment, she put her hands on her knees and leaned down over him. Her tangerine hair was disheveled and her face flushed with exertion; the rest of the crew was no different, obvious haggard from dealing with Chopper’s mistake. That thought made him dismally sad again, and he rubbed his stinging eyes as he began to cry again.
“I’m sorry… This is all my fault… I shoulda never caught that dumb fish,” he whimpered miserably.
“What’re you talking about? That was so much fun!” Luffy laughed, whirling on his behind to beam at him. Chopper would normally take him at face-value, but it would take a bit more encouragement to drag him out of his melancholy this time.
“No, I really messed up… I always do things like this and you have to protect me.” His shoulders sagged as he hung his head low. “I don’t deserve to be a Straw Hat.” He tensed up as a ripple of alarmed gasps went across the group.
“Chopper! Don’t saw that!” Nami cried.
“Yeah! You’re my doctor! I don’t want another one!” Luffy protested hotly.
“Everyone makes mistakes, Chopper. There’s no need to be so upset,” Robin told him with a gentle smile. At everyone’s continuous encouraging remarks, he looked up while rubbing the tears from his fur, and then turned to Zoro, who had yet to comment. He was intense as ever, arms crossed and expression serious. Is Zoro gonna yell at me? The man abruptly sighed deeply and poked Chopper in the top of the head with the hilt of one of his swords.
“Buck up, Chopper. You’re a pirate, remember? You made a commitment and you gotta stick to it,” he said sternly. He had told him that once before, when Chopper had made a scene when he had been stolen during the Davy Back fight. Zoro smirked at him with as soft as an expression as a chiseled, serious man like him could have. “You don’t have to worry about messing up, because we’re always here to help you clean it up. That’s what friends are for.” Chopper’s eyes widened and he gasped slightly, then began bawling with joy and jumped back up into Zoro’s arms.
“Waaaaaaaah! Zoro! Thank you! Thank you!” he cried as he nuzzled his face in his chest.
“All right, all right, cut it out, you’re getting me all wet!” he cried as Chopper continued to sob happily.
“Group hug!” Brook squealed and wrapped his bony frame around Zoro. Nami laughed and joined in, followed by a bemused Robin; hearts beat in Sanji’s eyes and he wriggled with joy while embracing the two women; Franky struck his pose before nearly crushing them all in his metal arms, and Luffy howled with delight before winding his rubbery arms around them several times before worming himself in.
“Hey, you asshats, cut it out!” Zoro griped, but Chopper could see him smiling.
Though he could barely breathe under the smothering hug, Chopper didn’t mind, because he was in the arms of his very best friends whom he loved more than anything in the world… And no matter how many of him there were, he was the one they wanted and cherished.
the good: thanksgiving was pretty okay after all; there were no big arguments, the food was great. we’ve been cooking a lot of good food in general. (standouts include: last week’s slow-cooked pork loin with a cherry-balsamic sauce, which was paired with acorn squash stuffed with wild rice, green onions, dried cherries, pecans, & goat cheese; our “second thanksgiving” where we repurposed the leftovers & made a mixture of stuffing+turkey which we then put inside homemade ravioli, then drizzled gravy over it as the sauce; & the maple & dijon-glazed salmon we had the night before last. oh, & p. spent all day yesterday making & smoking homemade turkey andouille, because we are going to be cooking a cajun/southern feast for xmas dinner & my mom doesn’t eat pork or beef.) i canceled my spotify subscription & am getting back into music the way i used to be into it: discovering new & new-to-me artists on bandcamp, downloading out of print albums from blogspot music nerds, & rediscovering my old favorite records. (i replaced the needle on my turntable & started listening to actual records again for the first time in over two years, & i can’t tell you how good that feels.) i’ve been writing a lot, making a lot of art. i’ve started playing bass guitar & accordion again. i’ve been cleaning & organizing the house, a little bit at a time. (it still looks a wreck but it’s better than it was before & i’ve managed to sort things into save & repurpose, give away, & trash/recycle categories.) i’ve been doing yoga nearly every day; mostly while wearing all black (i recently got a new pair of yoga pants & they’re black, just like my old ones, natch) & listening to chamber metal or, like, joy division. does this mean i’m health goth? i’ve been making plans for the near & more distant future. (near future plans include: tomorrow p. & i are driving to illinois to see an exhibit of the new works by my favorite contemporary artist (tony fitzpatrick) & then get sushi; i’m taking a two-week long intensive online writing workshop taught by ariel gore, starting on december 18th; also on december 18th, i’m teaching my perzine writing & making workshop. the art exhibit & writing workshop are my early birthday gifts from my parents & partner, respectively. because at this point i’d rather do things than get things.)
the bittersweet: i’ve been having a lot of nostalgic, melancholy feelings about the punk rocks. & sondheim’s death caused me to have a lot of nostalgic, melancholy feelings about musical theater. (except i was having those before that, anyway. see: my recent cabaret-posting.) i’ve been having some really intense dreams. i miss my friends. i miss live music and in-person poetry readings. i miss having crushes. i’m having feelings about my impending 40th birthday. i’ve been having some weird gender feels—not quite dysphoria, but...dysphoria adjacent. dysphoria lite? i want to look simultaneously masculine & femme, all the time, & it’s not always easy to achieve that balance. i’ve been getting close to it by either wearing more masculine clothing with bold makeup, or wearing a skirt or a dress with boots & no makeup.
the bad/the ugly: my mom’s been having some health issues. (fortunately she’s had like every kind of test & x-ray that relates to her specific issues, & they haven’t found anything acute or life-threatening.) a good friend of mine had a heart attack last week & needed triple bypass surgery. (but she’s recovering well, & came home from the hospital yesterday.) the kids are getting stir-crazy as the weather gets colder. c.’s been cranky & d. is going through a bout of severe anxiety. i’m with them so much of the time & have been for the past almost two years that i don’t deal with their moods well. speaking of moods: i’m facing the fact that i probably have pmdd. i’m getting the winter sads; i like a lot of things about winter, but the early dark starts to get to me after a while. i got my flu shot a week & a half ago & had a shitty reaction to it—i felt fatigued & under the weather for several days, plus i got a swollen lymph node in my armpit just like i got with my second dose of the covid vaccine. which means it will probably swell again when i get my covid booster, which i am not looking forward to, but i know i need to get it. i’m tired of living in a pandemic. every time i think it’s getting better, there’s some new variant to worry about, or cases surging again. i’ve accepted the fact that covid won’t ever go away, but i can’t wait til it becomes endemic rather than pandemic. i’m okay with wearing masks in certain situations, getting yearly boosters just like we do with the flu, stuff like that. but i wanna be able to see my friends or go to a bar or go to a show again, y’know? yesterday i had a covid scare; the first one i’ve had in a few months. (i guess i’m glad i only have covid scares once every few months now; rather than once every few days like i did during the first nine months of the pandemic.) i was 98% sure it was just a flare-up of my chronic allergy/sinus issues, but the 2% of me that was convinced it was covid was so much louder. i was all “oh my god, i’m gonna have to cancel all my plans for the next two weeks, & also i’ve probably infected my entire family &...” i finally calmed myself down a little bit by deciding that if my symptoms got worse, or were still around this morning, i’d go get tested.
good, again: i woke up feeling fine. i went downtown to do some holiday shopping, & i didn’t have to cancel any plans. i recently got a poem accepted into a publication i’ve been wanting to be in for a while. today, i mailed out the last two copies of my courtney love chapbook. i sold fifty copies in 2.5 years, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s kind of a big thing for something so indie. not to mention that all the feedback i’ve ever gotten from people who’ve read it has been super positive. & knowing that something i wrote made an impact on someone means more to me than sales numbers. (though making money off my writing is nice, too, don’t get me wrong.) my kids may be going through some stuff & driving me crazy, but there are also wonderful moments: c. saying he loves me, making art with them, teaching d. about greek mythology. d. got his first dose of the covid vaccine two weeks ago, gets his second dose next week—and he’s been really brave about it. & though he has been anxious about a lot of stuff recently, he’s actually talking to me & p. about it, which is huge for him. i’ve been doing stuff to try & mitigate the winter sadness: i take long, hot bubble baths, i bought a sun lamp, i eat a lot of soup & drink a lot of tea. i’ve been lighting the menorah every night of hanukkah, & am teaching the kids about it. i’ve been reaching out to some friends & family members i’d lost touch with. today i bought some winter cards & am going to send them to friends & family—i haven’t sent out winter holiday cards in several years. & i’m glad that despite everything, there is still more good than bad in my life.
Fairytales
Part 2 of 2
A/N: I got all the Russian endearments from a website that listed endearments. I put them in Google translate and they seemed vaguely right, so... sure.
He was really not expecting this. And he wasn't ready for this conversation, not really. The panic he was feeling must be showing on his face because Bucky slouched, making himself look smaller. He looked like he hadn’t been sleeping well, which made Tony’s stomach clench with guilt. He had done that to him.
They stared at each other, before JARVIS broke the silence. “Would you like me to save the simulation results, Sir?”
Tony jumped. “Yes, yeah, save and shut it down, J.” He took a deep breath. He was an adult. He could do this. “Wanna sit?” He waved a hand at the workshop. There was the couch that he had transformed into his bed, and a few stools scattered around.
Bucky nodded, and chose the couch. “Sit with me?”
Tony sat. He was an adult. He could do this. He opened his mouth, but Bucky beat him to it.
“I’m sorry.”
Frowning, Tony turned to face Bucky. “For what?” Buck didn’t have anything to be sorry about. He was the one who ran and hid for a week, ignoring his soulmate. He was the one who was a complete asshole, not Bucky.
“For-” Bucky paused. “Whatever you need me to be?”
Tony huffed out a laugh. “What a pair,” he muttered, shoving a hand through his hair. He let out a long sigh. “I’m sorry. I was an ass. I should have said something. Or not hidden away. For so long. Or said something. Sooner. Did I say that?” He mentally cringed at that terrible apology. “It really had nothing to do with you, but I took it out on you.” There, that sounded like an apology from someone who had their shit together.
Bucky nodded slowly. “I thought it was. Me, I mean. I understood.”
Tony reached over and took his hands. The contrast between the metal and the flesh hands was startling, but this wasn't the time to geek out. “No.” He said it firmly. leaving no room for disagreement or questioning. “This was 100% my hang ups.”
“That's what Natasha said. And Steve. And Clint, and Bruce, and Pepper, and Rhodey.”
Tony colored. “They all talked to you?”
(Watch out for the break!)
“I was pretty bummed,” Bucky said frankly.
Well, ouch. He probably deserved that. He definitely deserved that. “I’m sorry,” he said again. It was all he could say. “Tell me how to make this up to you.”
Bucky smirked, and there was an echo of the old Bucky Barnes from the war reels in it. “I can think of somethin’.” Then he sobered, looking more like the man Steve had brought in two weeks ago. “Give this a try?”
Tony could try. He was the king of trying. Plus, that smirk. It would take a saint to resist that.
He definitely wasn't.
“Yeah. I can do that.”
--
It wasn't easy. They had moments of awkwardness, and they had to sometimes pick their way around each other’s triggers, of which there were plenty between the two of them. They had arguments, and they spent time apart cooling off. But they both tried.
Sometimes Tony overcompensated for being an asshole for that first week, but Bucky would gently remind him that he accepted him exactly as he was, hang-ups and all, and Tony would quickly settle back into relative normalcy.
“Hey snowflake,” Tony said cheerfully. They had had a talk the night before, which was a nice euphemism for crying while talking about their emotions and needs. But like always, today was a fresh day. They had promised, early on, not to go to bed angry at each other, and it helped a lot. Their fights were further apart, and they were closer than ever. “What's up?”
“Can I just come see my cахарок[1] for no reason?” Bucky asked, wrapping his arms around Tony’s waist from behind. Tony was sitting in a stool, working on another project for SI.
“Sure you could. You haven't yet.”
Bucky kissed the side of his neck gently, and Tony melted into his arms. “So, what brings you down to my lair?”
“I brought you coffee,” he said, nodding towards the mug that was set on the work table. “And some cookies.”
Tony lit up. “Coffee? For me?”
Bucky nuzzled his nose behind Tony’s ear. “For you, baby.”
Tony half turned in his seat and kissed Bucky. “You’re my hero.”
“I know.”
“Want to stay and help with the gauntlets?” Ever since Bucky had seen Tony working on the Iron Man suit, he had been obsessed, asking question after question, and would be content to sit and watch Tony work on even the most mundane of details if it had anything to do with the suit. Eventually, Tony had started offering to let him help, and Bucky had nearly vibrated off the seat, he was so excited. When Tony asked, Bucky had shrugged, and evaded his eyes about why he loved the Iron Man suit so much.
It wasn't that important, and it was honestly pretty flattering, so Tony let it go, since Bucky seemed so embarrassed.
“Absolutely!” He seemed as enthusiastic as ever.
--
They started going out on dates, a month after they broke the news that James Buchanan Barnes was still alive, courtesy of a knock-off serum. They spun the story a little bit. Since the Winter Soldier was a ghost story for even top intelligence agencies, they didn't release that Bucky had been the Winter Soldier. All that was stated was that he was alive due to a bastardized super-soldier serum and some non-reproducible freezing methods. The very idea that a second super-soldier from World War II was still alive and young was more than enough to feed the media frenzy.
It was assumed that the real story would leak eventually, but until it did, this allowed the public to see the new Bucky before they saw him as a weapon.
Probably. The public was fickle.
Plus he was soulmates to Tony Stark, who was sometimes America’s darling and sometimes the devil incarnate. He could never keep up. He still felt a pang of sadness in situations like this that Bucky was saddled with him as a soulmate, but Bucky had said over and over that he was more than delighted to have him as his soulmate. He had no choice but to believe him.
“Here, try this,” Tony said, offering his fork to Bucky. It was salmon with a citrus sauce. Ever since they had started going out, Tony had delighted in introducing Bucky to new foods. Before the war, Bucky and Steve had been poor. During the war, the army was more interested in easy and moveable than interesting, and Hydra? All Hydra cared about was that their Asset was functional.
So now he got to show Bucky new things every time they ate out. Sushi. Fish. Duck. Escargot had been a memorable experience. They had even both tried snake, at a restaurant in LA. Tony because he would try anything at least once, and Bucky because Tony had dared him.
“It ain’t snail, is it?”
Tony shook his head. “Just salmon. You'll like it.”
Obligingly, Bucky opened his mouth and let Tony feed him the bite of salmon. Swallowing, he nodded. “S’good.”
Tony felt a flush of warmth, having picked something his soulmate liked. It was ridiculous, but he liked pleasing Bucky.
“How's your steak?” No matter where they were, if steak was on the menu, then Bucky got it. He had a ranking of every steak he had eaten so far, with several categories. Tony wasn't sure how he assigned points or kept track, but between Bucky and JARVIS, there were nearly twenty different steaks on the list now.
“Great!” Bucky said enthusiastically. “Better than last week’s steak. Want some, Лучик?”[2] He offered Tony a bite.
Tony accepted, just like he did every time. “You're right, this is better.”
Bucky gave him a quick kiss before stealing a bite from Tony’s plate.
“Hey!”
Laughing, Bucky offered Tony another piece of steak.
--
Tony still spent a lot of hours in the workshop. He did, after all, work full time as the head of R&D for SI, full time as a consultant for SHIELD, and full time as essentially the quartermaster who also designed the weapons for the Avengers. Bucky never complained, since Tony put in an effort to watch the time, and if he forgot, to leave when Bucky came to collect him.
“My Дракончик[3], you've been down here for hours,” Bucky said, startling Tony.
Tony steadied the soldering iron before he dropped it. “It's only been what, ten, twelve hours? I've gone longer, haven't I J?”
“Sir, it's been nearly twenty. And while you indeed have worked longer without sleep, that doesn't mean you should.” JARVIS’s tone was disapproving.
Frowning, Tony pulled up a clock. “It really has been twenty hours. He tried to stand, but his back protested and he sank back down. “Ouch.”
“What’s wrong?” Bucky’s voice was worried.
“Just knotted up my back pretty badly,” Tony admitted. “Have to move slower.”
Bucky settled his hands on Tony’s shoulders. “How about a hot shower, and then I give you a massage?”
Tony could already feel the knots disappearing. “What did I do to deserve you?”
Bucky brushed a kiss over the top of Tony’s head. “You did nothing but be you.” He helped Tony stand, and walked with him to the elevator.
“Flattery will get you everywhere, cupcake,” Tony told him.
“You're in no shape for what I want, Зайчонок[4],” Bucky said, his voice deep and gravelly. “At least, not yet.”
Tony felt that tone go all the way through him down to his toes, but he gave Bucky a baleful look. “Did you just call me a bunny?”
Bucky had the grace to look embarrassed, but didn't take it back. “You are pretty cute, Зайчонок,” he said, flicking Tony’s nose.
Tony rolled his eyes as the elevator door opened but didn't press it. The nicknames, as silly as they were sometimes, made his heart go a little bit gooey. “I believe you promised me a hot shower and a massage?”
“To begin with.”
--
Tony had been tossing the idea around for a while now in his head, and had even worked out a few schematics, but he wanted to ask Bucky before he went any further. The arm, while a serious piece of engineering marvel, was old. It needed near constant updates and maintenance, and while Bucky never said anything, he could tell it was causing him some stress. And the maintenance sometimes caused pain, which made Tony feel like the worst person in the world.
“J, can you get Bucky down here?”
“Of course, Sir.”
In under three minutes, Bucky appeared. “What’s up, котенок[5]?” Kitten was his favorite endearment for him, and it was growing on him. Other still made regular appearances, but котенок came out once or twice a day.
“So,” Tony started, suddenly hesitant. The arm was a painful subject for Bucky. Literally painful, given the way it was grafted on to him. Clumsily, he searched for words. He finally just blurted it out. “I want to build you a new arm.”
Bucky’s eyes widened. “You what?”
“Only if you want me to!” Tony said in a rush. “It's just- I know maintenance is sometimes painful and it's tedious and I know that it's heavy and it's a lot of work and I could help with all of that, but only if you want!” He repeated.
Bucky was looking at him with wide eyes, his mouth hanging open.
“Please say something.”
“You’d do that?”
A little hurt, Tony frowned. “Of course I would.”
As if realizing, Bucky hastened to explain. “It just seems like a lot of work, when you could be doing more important things.”
Softening, Tony crossed the room to him. “James Buchanan Barnes. There is nothing more important to me than you.”
Bucky clutched Tony’s hands. “I love you,” he said, suddenly.
Tony blinked.
“I know that emotional things give you hives, but-”
Tony raised one of their clasped hands up with his pointer finger held upright in a ‘hold on a second’ gesture. He processed the words. Bucky loved him. His soulmate loved him. Him.
Maybe fairytales did come true, sometimes.
“I love you, too,” he said hoarsely. “I really do.”
Bucky reeled him in close, and kissed him long and hard. Tony let go of Bucky’s hands to wind his hands around his neck and into Bucky’s hair.
Breaking apart for breath, Bucky peppered Tony’s face with little kisses. “I just couldn't hold it in any longer. I love you so much, Tony.”
Tony pulled him in closer, and just held him in a hug. “I'm so lucky to have you,” he replied. “And I love you too, Bucky.”
April 2018
Rediscovering an old passion of mine: The ice. I went to another ice-hockey match the other day and the atmosphere was fantastic - tense, excited, the players were really going for it. Hannes bought me beer and a hot dog and I enganged in friendly banter with the enemy (I wished him a safe trip home to Karlsruhe after Mannheim had lost and he winked at me). I really hope we'll win the semi-finals. I desperately want to go to the final! Ice-hockey brings back childhood memories for me because I used to join my dad who had season tickets for the LA Cannibals. He was allowed to bring children under 6 for free (I think I must have been 6 until I was about 10 years old...) I also saw the movie I, Tonya about the infamous figure skater Tonya Harding on Easter Sunday, sitting alone in the cinema, enjoying my popcorn. I loved this film. The soundtrack is awesome, the acting and the humour are spot-on. A few days later I actually went ice-skating with Korbian (in the EHC Red Bull rink!) and even though my feet still hurt so much that I have to unfasten the ice skates every twenty minutes it was great fun. Water and ice - I'm in my element.
A small present from a sixth-grader: a sticker of a smiling bowl of ramen noodle soup!
I can see that I'm so much fitter now than a few months ago. I can run up a flight of stairs without being out of breath. Not even a bit.
Sewing together all the granny squares I had lying around. The size is still on baby blanket level so just give me a few more years to finish it...
The first warm days. Planting flowers in front of my window (primrose, forget-me-not, buttercups). Setting up the canvas chair. Hanging up the laundry on the balcony. Eating outside, walking over Viktualienmarkt just before sunset. Great light and amazing smells.
Climbing the hill in Olympiapark. Lying in the grass, making out with K., enjoying a spectacular view over the Alps and the city.
Having painted toe nails for the first time after the winter. I especially like O.P.I's Tickle my France-y (and how every nail polish just looks so much prettier under water).
The Describe Yourself Like a Male Author Would Twitter thread: Her breasts entered the room before her far less interesting face, decidedly maternal hips and rounded thighs. He found her voice unpleasantly audible. As his gaze dropped from her mouth (still talking!) to her cleavage, he wondered why feminists were so angry all the time. (stellar example by Jennifer Weiner)
Watching Gegen die Wand by Fatih Akin for the first time. And Frida - seems like I'm quite into biopics considering how much I liked I, Tonya.
Seeing how the cat reacted to Korbinian. She just rolled into a little ball in his palms and he held her in his hands for quite a while. Seems like she prefers men...
Amira Casar is very pretty.
He said I didn't snore!
Unter Glück hatte ich mir eigentlich was anderes vorgestellt.
A new double-ended eyebrow brush.
Talking about that one illustration in Janosch's Post für den Tiger (mole network!) and Lena knew immediately what I meant.
Walking over the playground with Lena and Alexandra. Trying out the seesaw, a carousel and the swings. Climbing a jungle gym, squeezing through the ropes, sliding down (my ass didn't get stuck!!)
Lying outside in the sun on a deck chair after one hour of swimming. Cold at first, very very nice after I was dry. It's incredible how much power the sun already has.
Sore muscles from ice-skating. Hill-climbing. Swimming.
Talking a walk in the Nymphenburg castle grounds. Taking a photo of Magdalenenklause (as always - I think it's fascinating how you can see the reflection of the trees and the blue sky as well as the interior of the chapel and the windows at the far end). Reading at Königsplatz. Buying food at the Asian market and some candy at Pomeroy & Winterbottom. Meeting Lena and Obi, having avocado toast with fried eggs at Holzkranich in Schwabing. All in all a really nice day even though I wasn't in a great mood to begin with.
Trommeln in der Nacht was the best play I've seen at the Kammerspiele so far. I really liked it. I mean, an Australian guy singing pop songs during a classic Brecht play - what can go wrong?
Swimming freestyle laps for the first time! My technique is probably shit but all that matters is that it gets my heart rate up.
Finding four tiny holo stars on a page in a librabry book.
Deciding to ride my bike down to Großhesselohe - I lay around in the sunshine in my bathing suit. And I needed sunscreen for the first time this year! I love the smell of the Garnier sun oil. Felt like summer! Isarkaribik... I also lay across from a nudist guy with a pretty good ass. Doesn't hurt.
Moser Roth lemon yoghurt chocolate.
Getting a bunch of Alstroemeria flowers at the supermarket. They were so pretty and stayed fresh for weeks.
Scene hunting.
The sound of the woodpeckers in the trees outside my apartment.
Delicious recipes for all kinds of wraps in the latest issue of Schrot und Korn.
Walking barefoot.
Meeting two huge, fat cats on my evening walk over the fields. Seeing the illuminated living rooms, watching people having dinner, wondering if they actually like each other. The smell of the first blossoming trees. The view over the forest after sunset, watching planes rise above the clouds. The sound of last year's leaves in the wind. Still some traces of light left. Seeing a hedgehog behind a garden fence.
How interested the cat was in the little blooming twig I brought home from a walk.
Reading so incredibly much.
Reading, yes, again - reading about Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes in Connie Palmen's Du sagst es. It's a fictional autobiography of Hughes. All these feelings, so much drama and a life for literature.
Another evening walk (I like them best) - lying down in the big nest swing at the playground. Finding a pile of free give-aways on a bench, taking home paper plates (I use them for acrylic paints).
Trauringe have only one letter more than traurige.
Going to work by tram on a sunny morning. A book in my lap, eating fruit salad. Seeing the city in a different light and discovering places I had never seen before because I usually only go there by night (for example the square/monument left of the Isar near Müllersches Volksbad).
The fact that the laundry dries in a matter of hours on the balcony now.
Taking a random library book to read on my way to work. Reading the passage "Es war April, der Monat, der von T.S. Eliot zum grausamsten unter seinesgleichen gekürt wurde, und es war Freitag, der dreizehnte." in April, on Friday the 13th. The likelihood of this happening is approximately 1 in 2500.
Kunstautomaten.
Meeting basically everyone at Muffat-Biergarten. The Fabis, Claudia, Frank, Manu and Susa. Even Lucy the dog-lady was there.
Paying Rasmus a compliment which he was really happy about.
Hanging up some crystals in the trellis on the balcony.
Spending a day at the Northern part of the English Garden with the "family". Playing Kubb, somersaulting spontaneously, so much delicious food (pizza, chocolate fruit, chickpea salad, sushi, cold drip coffee, ...), exploring some old trees at the riverside, climbing, playing with cheeky dogs, reading Lena's graphic novel.
The Destiny's Child reunion at Coachella.
Ferrero is making mother-effin' Kinder Bueno, Milchschnitte and Kinderriegel ice-cream now! Deliiiish.
Going to a workshop about voice and body language. I actually got way more positive feedback than expected. Apparently my voice and articulation are quite nice and I keep eye contact much better than I thought. Also, I asked another girl from the group to join me for lunch. Yay, talking to people! Hello, new extrovert me!
Foldable silicon lunch boxes.
Playing badminton in the park. I want to do that more often!
Getting eight more books from the library even though I still had five at home.
When your book fits exactly into the handle on the seat in front of you and you don't need a bookmark.
Having a monthly ticket for public transport is surprisingly nice. Hop on, hop off.
Visiting some of my students at their work place on Girls'/Boy's Day. We went to Deutsches Museum and a kindergarden, for example. It was great to see how much the kids enjoyed their days.
The playoff final!!! Two goals in 10 seconds, omg. So EHC Red Bull Munich won for the third time in a row. There were gold glitter, beer showers, the players' children on the ice. And I flirted with a dude from Garmisch who kept calling me princess.
Woodworking. I'm currently carving a bowl and a small bird out of limewood.
Carrying a huge pot of flowers all the way home on the train.
That other kind of mango. The type you usually get in Asia. Less sweet, creamier.
Going to the market on Saturdays. Getting fresh bread, vegetables or flowers for the balcony.
Riding my bike through the forest in order to get to the garden centre.
A weird childhood flashback while washing my dirty feet in the sink: the memory of my grandma who wouldn't let us sit on the sofa in the summer if we didn't do that.
Spending a day with a happy-go-lucky woodworker. Playing games at the Starnberger See. Driving around in his Skoda. Eating pizza.
Wearing the &otherstories sunflower necklace with the one I bought in Portland and had always been to tight for me. And wearing the pink-blue checked pyjama pants in combination with a soft grey longsleeve shirt. Another thing that used to be too small.
The balcony!!! Tomatoes, yellow zucchini, pink poppies, multi-coloured petunias, I mean, YES. The light breaking in one of the crystals. Rainbow reflections.
Introducing Team PrePhiX (Premium Philips X)
Rosalie Mourmans,
Master in Neuropsychology
Hey! My name is Rosalie and I am from Maastricht, here I did my bachelor’s in psychology, work as an academic tutor and currently doing my Master in Neuropsychology. This study focuses on congenital, acquired or degenerative brain dysfunctions; related neuropsychiatric disorders; and the neuropharmacological mechanisms that underlie behaviour.
Tumblr media
For my exchange, I went to Hong Kong where I did a minor in criminal justice and the psychology of law enforcement administration in Asia. Since my experience in Hong Kong, I really got a taste for traveling and I can’t wait until my next trip! 😊
In the weekends I work in a café restaurant which might explain my love for food and drinks... Nothing beats a night out with good company, delicious food, and some drinks! Also, I volunteer in an institution that works with people who suffer from traumatic brain injury. Very satisfactory work to do! But, all this, and my current research internship which is based in a lab is not giving me any insights into the real working world, in companies and businesses.
So, the main reason for me to apply for the Premium programme is to gain more practical experience and insights in a company to complement my skills and competencies. Also, working in an internationally oriented setting and meeting so many new people really interests me.
I was super happy to hear that I could start with the programme and now I can proudly present myself as a member of team Prephix! With the Prephix team, we are doing a project for Philips which on the one hand perfectly fits my study background but, more importantly, working with such a big company as Philips is completely new for me and totally out of the box. I am sure this project will proof a very valuable experience where I will benefit from in my future career!
Fun fact: You are actually allowed, although I totally love sleeping, to wake me up for some good sushi!
Aline Simonetti
Master in Neuroeconomics
Tumblr media
Hi! I am Aline, and I am in the first year of my master’s program in neuroeconomics.  Since almost everybody shows a weird face when I say what I am studying, the explanation is very simple: take economics, psychology, and neuroscience, put all together, mix them, and the result is a subject called neuroeconomics! Now, jumping to the Premium Program, when I first heard about it, immediately I had that feeling that it would be the perfect opportunity to do something besides the university. And more important, a great chance to meet interesting people! Also, after reading about Philips project, I already knew that it would be my first option since it offers a nice match with my studies. So, here I am on the Prephix Team!
Fun fact: Even being Brazilian, I know (literally) what is winter! Yes, where I am from, we do have winter!
Myria Koutsoumpa
Master in Global Health, specialization in Health Management, Policy, and Economics
My name is Myria and I am originally from Athens, Greece, where I grew up, completed my undergraduate studies and worked in public and private healthcare. In the past, I might have been your worst nightmare, aka your dentist, but I am currently doing my Master in Global Health at the University of Maastricht.
Tumblr media
The Premium experience, and especially our collaboration with Philips and their project, is my first “outing” from the strict, clinical world, and I am confident that I am going to gain and develop valuable skills and competences for the future.
One might wonder why a dentist abandons the safety and stability of working at dental practice to head for the “unknown. Since my early years at university, there was always a question rising in my mind. Is it possible to promote and improve people's health at a larger scale, not only in an individual, but in a community, national, or even global level? This and more questions drove me all the way to my current studies, which I consider to be a great opportunity for me, being a former clinician, to broaden my knowledge horizons on health and to introduce me to the world of health economics, policy-making, governance of health and much more.
We need collective and co-operative effort to make the world a better place. And effort is like toothpaste, you can always squeeze out a bit more.
Fun Fact: I am also a keen Argentinian Tango dancer! ¡¿Bailamos?!
Chinmay Dhawan,
Data Scientist in the making!
Hi People, I am Chinmay. I was born in India and pretty much spent my whole life there before coming here. I chose Maastricht because I wanted to travel and live a different culture and where else to be except at the heart of the three countries.
Tumblr media
I am studying my masters in Data Science for Decision Making at the Knowledge Engineering department. And, I am having a blast, literally, my mind is about to explode with all the free time I have. :D
Apart from studies, I love animals, a lot. I also like reading and sometimes writing as well, not reports though.
Moving on to the Premium, I chose it because it gives me an opportunity to use my skills in practice and a chance to work with a diverse and international team. I’m totally enjoying it because my team-mates are four beautiful girls who are easy and fun to work with.  :)
Fun Fact: There is no fun fact! :P
Lisanne Maandonks
Master in Strategic Marketing
Hi! My name is Lisanne and I am from Bladel, a small town near Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I am currently studying my master’s in Strategic Marketing. Before my Master, I did my Bachelor in Maastricht in International Business at the SBE and I spend my exchange semester in Australia. I choose for this study because I like to combine strategy with creativity!
Tumblr media
During my studies, I have been looking forward to transferring my theoretical knowledge into practical experiences so when I saw Premium Program I knew this would be an amazing opportunity for me to do so. The Philips project is a great way for me to get an insight in a corporate business, to get in touch with a company I see myself working for in the future and to gain knowledge in an unknown but very interesting field namely neuropsychology!
I am very happy to be part of the Prephix Team and to have met such amazing people! I am enjoying all the workshops where I have a chance to meet even more people and to gain very valuable knowledge I can apply immediately.
Looking forward seeing the progress of all projects!
Home — Bruce X Daughter!Reader — Part 6
Part 1 — Part 2  — Part 3  — Part 4  — Part 5
MASTERLIST
REQUESTS
Summary: You end up spilling to both Tony and your dad that Peter is taking you to Homecoming.
Warnings: None.
Words: 2 540
A/N: This is a shitty filler why the fuck do I do this
Tumblr media
She felt the elevator slow down at the floor which Friday had guided her to, to Tony’s, personal, workshop where her dad said he would be for the day. She had thought the day meant something like mine to five, but he had missed both lunch and dinner and she was starting to wonder what was going on.
The door opened with a ding which alerted Bruce further inside the room where he had hunched over a table with half a dozen screens surrounding him and just as many, printed out, blueprints sprawled before him. His eyes were slightly bloodshot from how tired he was, the stubble on his neck seeming darker in the dim room and making him seem even more worn out than he perhaps was.
“There you are.” Y/N sauntered towards him, watching as he removed his glasses to rub his eyes with a tired groan. Her eyes diverted to the side of the table where there was a clearing in the mess of instruments and materials where the remains of takeout food unsafely created a change in the pattern of chemical compounds and other hazardous substances. “Working overtime, I see.”
“I’m so sorry, kid. I’m trying to work on a new type of fuel for all of Tony’s, god damned, aircrafts, but it either flames up in a quarter of a second or it doesn’t burn at all. I’ve been mixing different formulas all day.”
She looked around the table, almost taking a step forward to attempt and help, but creating fuel was far from her level of competence. That, and chemical science was a field she had barely had the chance to explore. She wouldn’t know where to start if she was to help him.
“I still don’t think putting your food next to…” She grabbed a clear bottle filled with a translucent liquid and flipped it around to read the label. “Sulfuric acid? You’re really begging to get your throat melted.”
“I…” He began, realizing how reckless he had been in his own workspace and how his daughter, who was not even a third of his age, had better, common, sense than he did. “Oh god… I can practically feel all these formulas frying my brain.”
“Of course!” She let in a sharp breath, crossing her arms nonchalantly and hinting a smug smile. “I thought I smelled barbecue when I got in here.”
Bruce chuckled, looking at his daughter as she gave in to her act and laughed loudly. She was like a flower, little at first but growing until finally sprouting and showing her true self. Bruce could sense they had reached that moment. She was herself. After so many years of living with her mom that made her into someone completely else, she was herself at last.
“Since I know you so well, and I know you don’t want to stop working on this despite that you should, let me accompany you at least?” Y/N requested and pulled her dad from his thoughts. He kept his smile, nodding slightly.
“Of course.” He accepted and on cue Y/N walked over to the side of the room to retrieve a stool which she then brought back. She sat down and Bruce began to get back to his latest batch of fuel. “How was your day? You and T'Challa seemed to get along well this morning?”
She grabbed the fast food box and opened it up as he had clearly left it, finding a few sushi rolls and some other, Japanese, dish for her to devour. “Yeah, we met at dinner too. He’s kind, very understanding, and doesn’t really treat me like a kid like a lot of people do. He’s pretty cool.”
“He definitely is more disciplined than the rest of us.”
“That, I’ll have to agree with.” She mumbled as she spoke with a California roll in her mouth. She recalled hers and T'Challa’s conversation from the morning and her mind slowly played forward until she remembered Peter and her body froze in the presence of her father. She had never gone to a school dance of any kind and if she would hypothetically gone, she wouldn’t have gone with a date. She had never talked to her mom about anything of that genre and talking to Bruce about it would be even worse than what it could have been like with her mom.
“Y/N?” Bruce asked as she had gone silent and her eyes were staring emptily before her.
“Ehm…” She swallowed the sushi with a loud gulp, her mind reeling between telling him about her date to the homecoming or if she would keep it a secret. After realizing that the odds of being caught leaving the Avengers Tower in a homecoming dress at the time where she would have to leave was nearing ninety eighth percent, she gave up. “Hey, dad… So, homecoming is next week.”
Bruce parted his lips for a moment, eyes widening slightly. “Okay.”
“And, I’m actually going this time.”
“That’s good.”
“And I might have a date…” She felt her heart skip a beat, her limbs almost feeling numb.
Bruce swallowed harshly. “Right…”
“And…” Y/N said in a shaky voice, wanting nothing but to rewind time and shut herself up. “That date might be Peter…”
“You and spidey-boy are going to homecoming together? Aw, they grow up so fast.” Tony stood in the room from out of the blue, his sudden presence causing Y/N to jump out of surprise. Her cheeks began to grow flaming hot and her heart was going like a wild drum inside her chest. She didn’t doubt that Bruce and Tony could see it.
“That’s…” Bruce began, still trying to process what Y/N had just said. “That’s okay, I guess. Peter’s a good kid. He’s Spider-Man, which I would have much rather seen your date was not, but he’s good.”
“Of course the two of you’re going!” Tony exclaimed like he had much say in the matter. “I’ll drive you up to the entrance in the red-”
“That, won’t, be necessary…” Y/N interrupted him, dragging out the pauses in between the words. “I really don’t want to make this into a big deal.”
“Oh nonsense! This is a big deal. I’m calling Pepper to set you up with a tailor for a fitting. She’ll gladly help you with accessories too, I’m sure. Any chance to shop with another woman is a chance taken with her. You’ll be in a good hands-”
“Tony.” Her voice was loud, but she was still only speaking. Nevertheless was it enough to cause Tony to shut up and to really get the attention of both the men before her. She had never taken tone like that, not once in her entire life. “I mean it. No big deal.”
She and Tony looked at each other and Tony was the first one to break, diverting his eyes to the floor for a moment. “Alright, you got it, but I would really like for you to at least talk to Pepper. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, but you need a dress nonetheless. Might as well get it with Pepper.”
She kept looking at him, once again surprised by him but not startled like before. His voice was sincere, holding a trace of regret and making him almost apologize without actually saying he was sorry. “Okay… Maybe it was time I meet her anyway?” She questioned even though she had barely had chance to speak to those on the already, large, team. She concluded there was no correct order to get to know them all and would have to simply handle things as they came.
“I’ll give her a call and see when she can meet you.” Tony flashed a short and tight smile, feeling bad from having crossed the line with her. All he wanted was to get on her good side, treat her rightfully with her past in mind, and fill whatever disliked and unexplainable void he had from not having a child of his own. “I just came here to order your old man here to drop this all for now. You need a break, Banner.”
“I’ll have to agree with that.” She admitted, turning towards her dad along with Tony.
“Fine. I’ll get back in the morning then.” Bruce gave in and straightened his back, stretching his arms up to his head and wincing at how stiff his neck and shoulders were. “What time is it?”
“Five past nine.” Y/N answered, glimpsing down at the watch around her wrist.
“Really?” Bruce furrowed his eyebrows, catching a glimpse of his own watch as he lowered his arm which he had completely forgotten, seeing the time for himself. “I would have guessed six, seven, maybe.”
“You missed dinner, and you really missed it. I hired the chef from my favorite Indian place. Of course, that place is in India.”
“Of course it is.” Y/N rolled her eyes with a hopeless smile as she started making her way outside, her casual tone yet another sign that she was starting to ease in to her new life to both Tony’s and Bruce’s joy. “Well, I’m heading downstairs to my workshop.”
“The equipment order arrives on Monday. You can always head up here if you need to borrow anything until then, as long as you return it.” Tony called to her as she was by the elevator.
“I’ll make do with what I have, thanks.” She smiled back at him as she stepped inside the elevator, waving towards her dad just before the doors could close. She pressed the floor of her workshop and leaned against the elevator wall, letting out a shaky breath from having told that she and Peter would go to homecoming together. She had never had friends, and if someone had told her only a few days prior that she would go to homecoming with a boy she had barely talked to, she would have told them they were insane. She had never gone to a dance of any kind, let alone had a date. A hollow feeling erupted in her stomach every time she thought about it, and she thought about it a lot. How couldn’t she? It was the most exciting, non-scientific or technical related, thing that had ever happened in her life.
The doors opened up and she turned left out into the hallway but could barely take a step before she nearly collided with someone. She looked up just in time and put her hands in front of herself, bouncing of the person like she had walked into a brick wall. She looked up at Thor who seemed just as surprised as she did by their sudden meeting.
“I’m sorry, Miss Banner. I wasn’t looking.” He apologized, placing his hands on each of her shoulders to steady her before taking a step back. “Are you alright?”
She pushed back her anxiousness of speaking to someone new and the fact that she was speaking to a literal god, letting her smile return. “I’m fine. I didn’t really look where I was going either. I’d ask you if you’re fine as well, but my guess is it takes a lot more than a teenage girl bumping into you to actually hurt you.”
Thor laughed, not too loud but still clearly, already liking the young woman he hadn’t gotten the chance to know. “I would say you need quite a lot more. Maybe if you were twice as big, wielded some kind of weapon, had large teeth… Maybe then I would be worried of bumping into you.”
“I’ll see what I can do.” She let out an airy huff and pulled her lips between her teeth to settle her wide smile.
“We haven’t gotten the chance to talk since you came here. I hope you find this tower to your liking?” Thor said whilst gesturing around them and towards the windows showing nighttime Manhattan it it’s full, glory.
“It’s everything I could have ever dreamt of and more. I love it here.”
“Wish I liked it as much as you do. It’s dull, in my opinion. Where are the grand halls? The golden decor?”
“I assume you have both of those in Asgard, then?”
“That and so much more. I’ll take you some time and show you what a real palace looks like.”
She swallowed dryly. Even if Thor had said what he had just for the sake of the conversation, the fact that the god of thunder had offered to take her with him to Asgard, a kingdom in a realm beyond her very comprehension, was enough to knock the words out of her for a few moments.
“I heard you and the Spider go to the same school?” Thor changed the subject, not bothering to call Peter by his name.
“Ehh, yes, we do. We have plenty of classes together and go to the same, voluntary class after school hours.” She confirmed and nodded her head. “We didn’t really talk to one another until I moved in here.”
“Talk to who?” Steve appeared, smiling between Y/N and Thor he had last seen at dinner a couple of hours earlier.
“The Spiderling.” Thor answered, turning his body slightly to the side to invite Steve in the conversation.
“Oh right, you attend the same school. I almost forgot that.” Steve recalled the night Y/N had first came to the tower and more specifically the realization between Y/N and Peter. “What do you two have planned for tonight? Talking in the middle of the hallway seems a little odd.”
“We bumped into one another.” Thor explained, keeping it short yet clear.
“I was just on my way to my workshop. I’m going to try and organize a bit and inventory everything, if I can.”
“I was looking for a drink. Care to join me?” Thor turned towards Steve with a hopeful smile that he would have some drinking company.
“Sorry, my friend, not today. I’m leaving tomorrow morning at seven and I want to arrive well rested.”
“Where are you going?” Y/N questioned, hears heating up as she realized how disappointed her tone had been.
“The new facility up state. I’ll be back on Wednesday again.” Steve assured, sensing that Y/N didn’t particularly like one of the few persons she had spoken to, to leave. “Hopefully this place will still be standing once I get back.”
Y/N stared at him, unable to tell which level of seriousness his words held. “Is- is that a legitimate concern you have?” She asked intimidatingly.
“Knowing the Avengers, anything and everything can happen in the blink of an eye, but no, I’m not worried, so you can sleep soundly whilst I’m away.” Steve smiled, winking jokingly at her.
“Excuse me.” Thor parted as he had caught sight of Clint further away heading towards the lounge and the bar, hurrying to catch up to him.
“Well alright, I’ll see you on Wednesday.” Steve turned back to Y/N. “You take care of yourself now, Banner. Make use of that workshop of yours.”
She followed him with her eyes as he too walked down the hallway, leaving her alone.
“I will.”
