The (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Hives at Knitting Factory

Full gallery available on my website here.
On Saturday, November 17, 2001, I photographed two bands from Sweden: The (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Hives in the main room of Knitting Factory. I believe this was The Hives’ first ever tour of the US and I would document two of their shows in New York City again 22 years later in support of their first new record in over a decade. T(I)NC performed at Bowery Ballroom with Rocket From the Crypt earlier in 2001 and a gallery from that show is available on my website here.
I previously discussed photographing The Hives with Jeanette D. Moses on DP Review and that interview is available on that website here.

Scandinavian musicians do filter their own influences into their own peculiar way. The Hives, for instance, are a fine band, but let us not call them the authentic rockers. Mind you, I'm not disparaging them, they are fabulous for what they are, i.e. a postmodernist rock band, and I think they embrace that. Sure, they can rock like crazy, yet they have an edge for me over many modern revival rockers for being in on the joke. You have a hunch they are always that close to a strong laughter thanks to them being delightfully over the top. Scandinavian musicians tend to go there thanks to them rejiggering the inputs into their idiosyncratic path. However, I wouldn't call them a parody, they are more like an homage on steroids.

I’ll write more on this when I get back home. Based on the most recent episode of Daredevil Born Again, I think I’m starting to get why Foggy and Karen weren’t part of this season’s storyline. It looks like the focus of the show is Matt, Fisk, and now Frank figuring out what they want their legacies to be. Matt gave up being Daredevil because he felt he crossed a line, Fisk is trying to repair his image, and now Frank has to deal with the fact that he’s become an idol to the public. It also looks like the writers wanted Matt, Fisk, and Frank to go on this journey of self-discovery on their own. Not only did Foggy and Karen get written out, Fisk is no longer on good terms with Vanessa and Maya Lopez.
Based on where we’re at with the show, I can see the logic behind that. Matt’s always had Foggy and Karen to turn to if he was lost. Frank is a loner, but he did have Karen, Micro, and Amy Bendix. Fisk, even though he’s a magnificent bastard, had Vanessa and Maya. So it looks like the writers wanted to see where they can take the three men if they didn’t have their support.
It fits with the theme of being “born again”. Who are Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, and Frank Castle if you strip away what made them Daredevil, Kingpin, and The Punisher, respectively? Now, instead of someone telling them what they should be and helping them along the way, the three of them have to figure it out on their own. It’s obviously going to be a messy journey, especially with how emotionally volatile the three of them are. But I feel like that’s the whole point of the show, to see these men either self-destruct or climb out of the hole they’re in and be “born again”.
You can already see how the three of them are without their support. Matt, without Foggy and Karen, is becoming more open to the idea of punishment and retribution (aka he’s becoming like Frank Castle). He also thinks he’s become unworthy of grace since he can’t even bring himself to attend church. Fisk, without Vanessa and Maya, is making a sincere attempt at rehabilitating his image in order to win them back. However, you can already see him start to relapse with him blackmailing the police commissioner. And now, it looks like Frank will have to learn how to live with the fact that he’s the “bad guy”. Because it doesn’t matter how much he justifies his actions, the fact that regular people now want to be him makes him a toxic figure.
Matt’s gonna have to learn how to forgive himself, Fisk is gonna self-destruct since he can’t change his ways, and Frank is gonna have to accept he’s the villain while making it clear that people should instead be aspiring to be like Captain America or Daredevil (the Cap example is from the comics).
TL;DR: DDBA is the superhero equivalent of a mid-life crisis.

I'LL DO ANYTHING BRO 🙏🙏🙏🙏 I'M BEGGING 😭😭😭😭😭 PLEASE RAMBLE
Alright, so.
First thing about it is the setup of the scenes; the chapter could've been easily split into two because it's LONG and either scene has plenty of content on its own to make up for the lack of the other, but I really didn't wanna split it because the tragedy in it all was enhanced so well by them playing together.
In the first scene we have flashbacks of Butters as Kenny knew him; the true heart of their relationship, an in-depth exploration of WHY Butters was so important to him. Why he wasn't just any friend, why none of Kenny's other friends can even remotely fill the hole he left behind— not even Tweek, even though he believes Kenny about his curse too. We see Butters as he is in the show; a chipper kid, soft and caring, someone who comforts those who need it without thinking about it twice.
"Butters moved Heaven and Hell to get to him so he wasn’t alone" means that Butters would often break his parents' rules, sneak out when he was supposed to do chores, study, be grounded— he risked everything to be there for Kenny. This hasn't been explicitly mentioned in the fic but it will, and it plays into why Kenny feels so guilty about Butters' disappearance and everything that went downhill in the Stotch house.
Then we have the second scene, and— dare I say— the first real introduction to Vic Chaos. Butters and Chaos have haunted the narrative since the first chapter, and now we finally see them as one in the flesh, and it's a violent contrast to the soft and chipper Butters we saw just now: Butters, as Kenny knew him five years ago, vs. Vic Chaos, an impulsive man who shoots careless bullets around the room and hammers in on Kenny's head with a metal chair.
I wish I could've done a better job at it still, but in a way, what I'm trying to recreate in Chaos Plan is this feeling I got when I saw Vic Chaos in "Post Covid: The Return Of Covid" for the first time. This man, who is so unmistakably Butters (Matt & Trey really did a great job aging up all the boys honestly, they're all perfectly recognizable), and yet so distant it's chilling. Kyle's attempted warning to Cartman in that same special is a perfect representation of the chilling reality of who Butters has become:
Kyle: Cartman, listen to me very carefully. Butters has some kind of power over people. You guys aren't safe. Cartman: Uh, yes, about 12:30. Kyle: [stunned] Did you hear what I said? Butters is extremely dangerous!
He leaves behind a trail of literal death and destruction, then "waltzes out like nothing happened" (actual quote from the fireman in this scene), in the same upbeat way we know Butters is usually like. In s16's "Butterballs" this is what Butters says to his grandma after his violent outburst on live TV:
I got real mean and I beat the snot outta Dr. Oz. I can't lie, it felt kind of good. At first. But since then all I have is just... a kind of dark, empty feeling. Then I realized... that's how you must feel. All the time.
In both Chaos Plan as well as Post Covid (the bad ending), Butters has embraced this side of himself. This careless, built-up rage from years and years of the world beating down on him and then leaving him trapped alone, to his own devices. There is an endless "dark, empty feeling" inside him that he has been both forced to and let himself succumb to, distant from everything he used to be— even his own name.
And he keeps the mask up perfectly throughout the whole fight with Mysterion. At first they banter, flirt a little, even. Does he realize what he's doing when he says things like "Couldn't let him take the cake, could I?" or "Oh, you’ll sign your name, all right. All after I’m done with you"? I doubt it; Butters is notorious for being oblivious to obvious innuendo. It's all a game to him, he's stuck somewhere between being a kid playing the villain with a flair for the dramatic, and someone who's gotten desensitized and numb to the horrors of life.
So what snaps him out of it?
Bodily harm. Or the threat of it.
Cartman: Godammit Butters, stop playing games! My entire family is in danger of being wiped out and I swear to God if you don't help me, Butters, I will rip your fucking balls off with my bare hands! Vic Chaos: Ohh hamburgers.
Suddenly he isn't Chaos anymore. He isn't Vic, he isn't a mastermind scammer, hacker, he is none of the masks he wears to desperately smother whoever is below. He is just Butters, a kid who is afraid of pain.

Harry returns from Europe, assisting the other Peters in the lab. Together, they create a glider and weapons for Peter.
In a moment of rage, Peter nearly kills Norman before they manage to cure all the villains. However, the universe continues to collapse.

I Want a Nurse
Bucky Barnes x fem!Avenger!reader
(starts with Matt Murdock x reader but just trust me)
Rating: Mature (it starts slow, I’ll give a heads up when we get close to any action)
Summary: Finding herself in unfamiliar territory, or unfamiliar times to be exact, an Avenger must find her way home or risk permanently altering her timeline. If only Bucky Barnes were less charming her task would be much easier.
I realized I didn’t do the read more thing on chapter one and I am so so sorry about that.
Chapter Two - Lost and Found
Present Day, 3 Days Since Nightingale’s Disappearance - Avengers Tower
Bucky’s headache only got worse. Maybe Murdock did have powers, and it was inflicting a wicked headache on him with his glare.
“Just because I’m not her biggest fan, doesn’t mean I’m going to evaporate her.” Barnes mumbled, knowing Matt could hear him.
“Why’d she take the hit for you? You hate her.” If Murdock’s glare was meant to be intimidating, Bucky couldn’t help how he rolled his eyes in response.
“I don’t hate her.” This same discussion, again and again.
“You’re mean to her, always have been!”
“Just because I don’t want her to baby me doesn’t mean I’m being mean to her!” Was it so wrong that Bucky just wanted her to keep her damn distance?
“She’s just trying to do her job!”
“Yeah? And look where that got her!” Bucky and Matt were yelling now, bringing Steve and Sam back from the kitchen
“Really guys?” Sam was exasperated. He had been desperate to keep the peace between them, but after so many days of no answers Sam’s tactics of mediating were losing efficacy.
Matt had been visiting for the last three days, desperate for a crumb of information but still there were no leads, no guesses, no hits on where she could be. Unfortunately, this also meant that Bucky and Matt had been at each other’s throats for those three days.
Bucky was bouncing between guilt at Nightingale going missing because of him, and anger that she hadn’t left when he told her to.
Matt had settled on anger, directed specifically at Barnes.
“You both know she would hate this, she hated when you two fought.” Steve tried to ease the tension in the room, but mentioning her only made Matt clench his fist tighter.
“We moving into the past tense already?” He spoke lowly, a gravely hum lacing his voice.
“No, no we are not. We are still looking Matt, we’re going to find her and bring her home.” Steve was quick to correct himself. 3 days was hardly time to call it quits but there was nothing to go on.
Dr St Helens had been a celebrated, award winning, and innovative scientist and inventor, but his mental breakdown after having his latest and most life changing work stolen tied with his wife leaving him left him more than a broken man. In his grief he had turned to reviving old hydra tech and merged it Chintari remnants from the Battle of New York. It was a Frankenstein effort of destructive rays and weaponry that had Tony, Peter, and Bruce scratching their heads trying to figure out what the goal was when not even Dr St Helens was cognizant enough to explain. Even reaching out to Shuri proved a puzzle for the young genius, but she was sure it could be solved.
“If the mad man can create it, we can certainly understand it.” She had said, and Bucky desperately wanted to believe that. Surely if she could fix him, this would be a walk in the park?
It was then they heard an alarm from down the hall begin to go off, jumping and running down the hall as they ran towards Tony’s lab just in time to have Peter cut around the corner - his eyes wide with surprise and confusion as he spoke to them.
“You’re going to want to see this.”
—————————————————-
June 27th 1943, French Countryside, 20 miles from the Italian Border
“And there we go, a picture for your new file.” Lorraine smiled at her handiwork, a crisp new photo of her newest friend.
“Thank you Lorraine.”
“Of course! Got to get you all official before we head in to Italy.”
Y/n smiled, hopefully she could get a message to Steve, she could only pray he would be over here soon enough and she would be able to meet him. If she could make enough of an impact in his memory, he would know where she was in the future!
“I really appreciate Mrs Daniels taking me on.” It would’ve been a nightmare trying to get through war torn Europe without attaching herself to this group.
“Oh think nothing of it, we’re glad to have you and your magic hands here helping us.”
Y/n laughed as Lorraine wiggled her fingers. The girls had begun to joke that she had magic hands, since all the men she healed made such speedy recoveries. In truth, y/n was really holding herself back. It was like working in the hospital again, healing to a comfortable level without being overly suspicious. Unfortunately the men were still heading out despite the pain, feeling better than they had in a long time, meaning despite her best efforts they were still out of the tent much earlier than normal.
She’d have to be careful, no sense getting caught up in trying to explain her powers. That would lead to so difficult conversations and would definitely delay her meeting Steve if not derailing her plans entirely by catching Hydra’s attention.
They would be meeting up with a couple of men from the unit stationed in Azzano and they would be escorting them from there. The unit George and his friend Paul were from would also be joining, the need for more soldiers on the Italian front increasing as more men were being captured.
Y/n was glad she could keep an eye on her new friends a while longer. While she had only been in 1943 for a week now, Lorraine had become a fast friend - and George always seemed to follow her around with Paul right behind him. It was a funny scene to watch George trying to sweet talk her outside the medical tent, trying to get her sweetened sympathy with a burnt hand or a cut forehead, but Lorraine saw right through it. Y/n and Paul could only laugh at the scene.
With her small bag, a spare duffle from a soldier in George’s unit, filled with spare clothes and toiletries from the other nurses and shipments sent over, she climbed into the truck next to Lorraine.
“I wonder what the temperature will be like in Italy, wish it wasn’t so hot.” A young nurse, Janet complained next to them as she fanned herself.
They had been traveling for a bit, and with every mile Y/n had missed the air conditioner of her time but the others could only laugh at Janet’s plight.
“Maybe if you didn’t wear that fancy dress, you wouldn’t be overheating.” Another nurse joked from further in the truck
“Hey! Moving camps means new men, I want to make a good first impression!” Janet was a sweet but silly girl, far too invested in romance during a war. Her father, some important banker in New York, was apparently very opposed to her nursing, but eventually relented to his only daughter’s whims. And nobody could complain when her father sent goodies and treats for all of them in his care packages.
The truck came to a stop, as the girls laughed again.
“Is a lovely thing to hear the laughter of pretty ladies.” A hearty voice laughed, coming to the end of the truck and looking up at them. “It’s a pleasure to meet you ladies, my name is Corporal Dugan, I’ll be escorting you ladies on to Azzano.”
The man smiled up under this mustache and y/n grinned. Dum Dum Dugan, y/n remembered him from Steve’s Howling Commando stories. This was her lucky day indeed.
“Hello Corporal Dugan, do take care of us?” Lorraine shook his hand sweetly from her end seat, with Mrs Daniels riding up front Lorraine was their unofficial leader.
“It’ll be my pleasure.” He grinned, tipping his head with a wink to some of the younger nurses before walking away.
It was another couple of hours of travel before they made it to Azzano, soldiers were there helping the nurses out of the truck and unloading fresh supplies while y/n dawdled as she stretched in the truck, last one out. As she went to hop out of the truck though, her foot caught as she took the hand of the soldier waiting for her.
Luckily he grabbed her before she fell and placed her gently on the ground.
“You just got here and you’re already falling for me, huh doll?”
She laughed, familiar with the soldiers’ easy flirting at this point, before she looked up into a smiling face that surprised her.
Smiling down at her was none other than Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes.
How could she forget what else was waiting in Azzano?
———————————————
Present Day - 3 Days Since Nightingale’s Disappearance - Avengers Tower
“What is it?” Matt asked as the others stared at the screen. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“It’s a picture of y/n, but it’s…well she’s…” Peter struggled to find the words before Natasha spoke up
“It’s a file from World War Two that’s part of some online archive, information from this woman as a nurse in 1943.”
They all stared at her, that was definitely her face, her hair done differently to suit the time, and the picture faded with age. The file information was minimal, a piece of a larger file of information from the Smithsonian’s online collection.
“Nurse Y/n l/n, picture from June 1943, age y/a” Steve spoke clearly.
“That doesn’t make any sense. It’s probably some sort of mix up because they look similar.” Matt was confused, everyone was. But this wasn’t just a simple mix up, this woman smiling back at them was every inch y/n.
As Steve and Bucky stared at the picture more and more, they felt a scratch at their brains, like there was something they were supposed to be remembering. Bucky’s headache only grew worse, finding himself clutching his hand to his head.
“You ok, Buck?” It was Steve that spoke, turning to Bucky as the groan left his lips. His head hurt, the light hurt, and now this was making it worse as he felt his brain struggle to make sense of it all.
“Headache, since the fight. I got thrown into a building.” He grumbled as if it was obvious
“Y/n would’ve checked for that and fixed it.” Steve was wary, and Bucky couldn’t tell if it was sympathy or concern in his tone.
“Yeah well it came back after she left.” Damn what kind of lights did Stark use in this lab? It was too bright.
“I’ve had a headache for days now too.” When Steve said this, Bucky finally looked up to meet his gaze.
“What if it isn’t a simple headache Buck, what if something weirder is going on?”
“What on earth do you-“ but Bucky was cut off as memories began to flash in his mind, bringing him to his knees. New memories. Not memories that Hydra had taken, but something fresh.
A truck, new nurses, a charming laugh and the surprised face of a cute nurse as he caught her.
Steve was at his side as he clutched his head and groaned out his realization to the room.
“I know where she is.”
—————————————————
June 27th 1943, Azzano, Italy - US Military Camp
“Oh, uh, thank you, sir.” Y/n scurried to steady herself out of his grasp. Sergeant Barnes was no fan of hers in the future and she didn’t want to bother him further by antagonizing him in the past.
“You’re very welcome, if you’d like I can take your bag and lead you on to your friends.” He flashed her a winning smile, his eyes still bright despite what he’d seen so far. Y/n could only smile back briefly before averting her eyes.
“Oh that won’t be necessary, I’m sure you’re busy sir and-“
“Bucky, please. Sir makes me feel old. And I promise I’m not busy.” he laughed
A chill ran down her spine at the name, she was never allowed to call him Bucky. The one time it slipped she got a glare, and never had since.
“I don’t want to intrude.” A weak excuse
“You’re not intruding. This is entirely self serving I assure you, see I’m trying to get a nice in with the nurses so if you end up stitching me up, you might be gentle about it.” Again he smiled with a wink, and she finally relented her grasp on her bag. She could be nice, she could be civil, and then she would avoid him until Steve arrived.
“Thank you.” She smiled lightly at him as he held out his arm. She looked at him now, cocking an eyebrow.
“It was raining earlier today and the ground is still slippery, I’d hate for you to fall.”
The ground looked fine, but again she decided to humor him.
It reminded her of Matt, walking like this. She knew that Matt was perfectly capable of walking around on his own but it made her feel useful to him and he always said he loved having his pretty girl on his arm.
She’s made it a week without missing Matt, but this Bucky’s charm reminded her of his humor so much her heart clenched.
“So, I’ve given you my name, could I have yours?” He chirped beside her as they walked.
“Y/n l/n” he complimented it before they devolved into the usual pleasantries, where are you from, how long have you been overseas, etc etc etc. It was funny to hear Bucky explain his life to her, while she already knew. He was from Brooklyn, he had his mom and his little sister Rebecca, his best friend Steve was a pain in his neck which only made y/n laugh
“Yeah he’s a scrappy thing, I miss his fire out here though.” He chuckled, a hint of sadness laced his humored tone.
“Maybe you’ll get to see him soon, maybe on leave?” She smiled, knowing that he would very much be seeing Steve soon, sooner than he thought to be sure. Though he’d be decidedly less scrappy.
“Yeah, maybe, it’d be nice to be home for a bit.” Now his smile was genuine and light, memories of home bringing some energy back to him.
As they approached the tent where she heard the laughter of her fellow nurses, he tipped his head to her, handing her bag back to her.
“Well Miss, this is your stop.”
“Thank you very much Sergeant Barnes”
“Bucky, doll, please.” He placed his hand over his heart, feigning heartache as a smile dance across his lips. God had that look ever been directed at her? Did Sergeant Barnes even smile like that anymore?
“Have a good evening Sergeant Barnes.” She shook her head as she pulled back the flap, making her way in with the other nurses with a smile on her face.

Officially charting into another AU! Mortal Kombat Skool Days and Transformers: Instruments of Destruction are now being joined by a remakequel (a phrase coined by my friend Kyle) of one of the most underrated series the Blue Blur was part of...
SONIC UNDERGROUND ENCORE
While I really like the show, I admit it has issues. But for my version, it will be more mature in its themes, similar to SatAM and the 2000's era of games. Plus, I imagine some of the main characters, some of which weren't in the original show, would be "voiced" by actual musicians. Yes, I'm keeping the music aspect. But instead of being cheesy pop numbers, I want it to be more like... well, without a better way to describe it, Crush 40.
CAST
THE RESISTANCE
Prince Sonic Aleena - Matt Walst (speaking and singing)
Princess Sonia Aleena - Lauren Babic (speaking and singing)
Prince Manic Aleena - Craig Mabbit (speaking and singing)
Shadow Rose - Benjamin Burnley (speaking and singing)
Amy Rose - Addie Amick (speaking and singing)
Miles "Tails" Prower - James A. Janisse (speaking)
Knuckles of Angel Island - Jensen Ackles (speaking)
Cyrus Leone - Miles Luna (speaking)
Agent Silver - Kellin Quinn (speaking and singing)
Princess Blaze of Soleanna - Kari Wahlgren (speaking)
ROBOTON REGIME
Dr. Robotnik - Jim Cummings (speaking)
Agent Sleet - Charlie Adler (speaking)
Agent Dingo - Clancy Brown (speaking)
SWATBots - Isaac Singleton Jr. (speaking)
OTHERS
Bartleby Montclair - Nicholas Manelick (speaking)
Queen Bernadette Aleena - Amy Lee (speaking and singing)
Keep in mind, this is just the base cast. If you have any suggestions, do tell. In the meantime, I hope you're looking forward to what's cooking! It's way past cool...

Cities believed to be 2000-3000 years old. (I LOVE LIDAR.)

Using the laser-scanning technology, researchers have uncovered a complex network of farmland, roads and neighbourhoods in Ecuador's Upano River Valley.
The cities are believed to be between 2,000 and 3,000 years old, according to Rostain, who works for France's National Center for Scientific Research. [Rostain's] group's findings were recently published in the journal Science.

Huge ancient city discovered in Amazon
"Wow" was all archaeologist Stéphen Rostain could say when LiDAR (light detection and ranging) laser technology revealed several ancient cities hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest.
"It's a gift for an archaeologist," he told The Current's Matt Galloway.
His group's findings were recently published in the journal Science.
"In the Upano, it's a completely new approach [to] the human past in the biggest rainforest of the world," he said.
Indigenous archaeologist argues humans may have arrived here 130,000 years ago
New discoveries challenge our understanding of when the first people arrived in North America
LiDAR leads the way
Rostain has been working in the Upano River Valley for years. He says he started excavating there 25 years ago, so he's known about the site with earth mounds in the area for decades.
"What we didn't [know] at this time, it was the size and the global organization of this construction," he said. "This is really new, and the LiDAR showed to us a map of this road connecting cities."
LiDAR was introduced to the excavation in 2015, when Ecuador's National Institute for Cultural Heritage funded a LiDAR survey of the valley.
As part of the survey, specially equipped planes beamed laser pulses through the forest's vegetation, and measured their return path.

According to archaeologist Jay Silverstein, a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University in England, this method allows researchers to create a terrain model of the ground underneath the forest.
"You've basically skimmed off all the trees and you're actually looking at the shape of the earth," he told Galloway. "Then we start to be able to see the patterns of what we call anthropogenic, or things that were made by humans as opposed to nature."
For Rostain, this method is indispensable because it allows the exact shape and size of the ground to be reconstructed without harming the forest itself.
Rostain says nothing gets destroyed by LiDAR, noting that the technology maps out the terrain without cutting trees or destroying the archaeological site. "It's just perfect."
Silverstein said science can indeed be destructive, as damage created during excavation can't be undone. That's why using non-destructive archaeology like LiDAR is extremely important.
"We are developing more and more non-destructive techniques that allow us to to plan our excavations much better to understand what we're looking at and on the large scale before we do our small-scale excavations," he said.
Humankind's potential — and fragility
As significant as this discovery is, Silverstein warns against making any assumptions about this civilization based on first impressions.
"When I teach students or younger archaeologists, I tell them that your first impression, your gut instinct, your feeling of what you see when you first see, it is wrong," he said.
What's at stake for the climate, deep in the Amazon
The Amazon rainforest plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate, but it’s under serious threat from deforestation. CBC's international climate team ventures deep into the forest with scientists to learn how climate change is affecting it, and what’s at stake in the fight to save it.
In this case, Silverstein said assumptions shouldn't be made about what the geometric shapes revealed by LiDAR represent.
"You don't know if you're really talking about palace plazas or agricultural fields when you see a rectangular shape in the ground," he said. "There's a big difference of what it means when understanding that society."
Nevertheless, these findings are confirmation of humanity's potential, said Silverstein.
"Whether you're we're dealing with Highlanders in Papua New Guinea or villagers in Mexico … we adapt to our environments, we figure ways to organize ourselves," he said.
"And given the opportunity and the resources and good fortune, we will organize ourselves and create more complex societies and we'll figure out how to better manage our water and build roads and build houses."
How recreating ancient recipes helps one food buff bring the past to life
Lessons from an ancient Athenian in an era of 'fake news'
There may be a grim lesson to be learned from these findings, according to Silverstein: civilization is fragile, and there's no guarantee that our societies will be around in the future.
"Everyone who lived in those ancient societies thought their society was fine and that they were going to live on forever, and that their children would live there and their grandchildren and so on," he said. "But something happened and it didn't."
"We blithely go through life and we get our warnings of climate crisis and warfare and threats. But we more or less assume that we're going to be here tomorrow and living just like we do today —until it happens."

‘ hc' habits
good habits:
sociable. he's easy to talk to and he's approachable. it's not difficult for him to make friends with any group, whether they're nerds, jocks, alternative, stoners, techies, outcasts, hustlers, gangstas, or whomever. although, he personally dislike hanging around the affluent crowds, he does have fun at exaggerating their social etiquette and watching them fall for his facade, when he's undercover.
listening (when he wants to) and studying. despite being a hothead who expressed the typical "bad boy" mannerisms when he was a teenager, you could never call him one-dimensional. just as he was street smart, he was book smart too. his studiousness could be attributed to his parents' strictness, but that'd be downplaying his natural penchant for building his understanding of subjects he's interested in. he's well-versed in interdisciplinary studies, including math, history, physics, materials/neuroscience, bio/neuromechanics, aerospace engineering, robotics/mechatronics, a.i., medical science, etc. under bruce's tutelage, he attained extensive knowledge on botany.
ambitious. piggy-backing off the above, while he has a fun with problem-solving, naturally in the detective field, teru desires to be a physician. he's good at crafting and working with non-western medicines.
regular workouts. before becoming batman, he was amazingly flexible and athletic. rigorous strength training, cardio, and frequent participation in various sports such as wrestling, baseball, swimming, diving, archery, and mountain climbing have been his therapy. if he wasn't so tunnel-visioned on medicine, then becoming a olympian would've had his heart.
protective. this seesaws over the borders of 'good' and 'bad' because while the first thought of possessing such a quality is appreciable, depending on the circumstances, he can be insufferable. it stems from all the losses he took in his life. the murder of his father, charlie's betrayal and untimely death, matt's near-permanent jokerization, working under dangerous corporate tyrants like derek powitz, the kidnappings of his loved ones, ace's abuse, and other life-changing events made him uncomfortable with his people involving themselves in a situations he believes he should be able to handle.
open-minded. for example, if he's seeing someone is willing to make an effort to change their life around, he's not above giving them a shot. the way he lived his own life years ago, there was a time he believed if it was possible he could make it to see twenty. he never liked talking about it, but if it helped him reach out to other troubled individals, he would (and has.).
humble. the city he protected sold him out and at times, have worked against him. it stung like hell, and it has added to the weight he carries in his soul, but to quote him, "small rewards are the best ones". if he helped at least one person live to see another day, and or was responsible for changing somebody's life around for the better, then he isn't looking for worship and public adoration.
bad habits:
emotional control. in his early batman days, it was his age, and traumatic experiences that affected his performance. it became progressively worse when his dna was spliced with vampire bat by dr. cuvier. while he has a better handle on it in presently as an adult, it's an affliction that keeps him mindful of his emotions.
judgmental. i mentioned earlier that he's openminded, he is, but there are still things out there he's biased against. first off all, jokerz. he understands how a problematic background can lead to dramatic and destructive decisions, but wearing clown makeup is... a choice. then, there's the chimera movement... i'll get more into this later.
vindictive. 'an eye for an eye can make the whole world blind', but teru will watch those who wronged him choke before his world goes black. he feels no remorse for the accidental killing of his father's murderer, nor for disfiguring mr. powers--the man who plotted it, in the first place. he doesn't shame himself for feeling absolved over the death of dr. abel cuvier, the geneticist responsible for teru's body and leaving him with an unchangeable condition.
vices. he's slowly weening off of cigarettes and caffeine consumption, and trying to tolerate the taste of miswaks and mushroom coffee to replace the need.
selfish. he's only human. sometimes he wants to tune out and get lost somewhere, far away from the expectations and drama. he may shut down, put his phone in vibrate, and decompress in whatever activity that gives him temporary joy.
disrespectful. he wasn't big on authority growing up. in his mind, there was no such thing as a good cop until he met barbara gordon. outside of his general opinion on law enforcement, he just has a mouth on him. it annoys people close to him and enemies alike.
argumentative. if he's passionate about a topic, the person on the other hand might be able to save themselves if they're able to come up with the most logical brain-busting response, it gives teru pause and a chance to reassess everything. it's not that he doesn't like to be wrong—he just believes in his heart.
i can go on, but stopping here for now.

(Long post) From Frank Bruni's NYTimes "For the love of sentences" column:
In Wired, Brian Barrett observed that while Elon Musk has quit Washington, his lieutenants and his destructive impulses haven’t, so retiring DOGE “would be like trying to remove a drop of food coloring from a glass of water.” (Thanks to Carolyn Jones of Charlotte, N.C., and Alan Stamm of Birmingham, Mich., among others, for nominating this.)
In The Washington Post, Matt Bai bid adieu to a special Trump-administration someone. “As Elon Musk departs Washington, his mood resembles his Cybertruck: ugly and adolescent,” Bai wrote. Bai also prophesied Musk’s complaint that “he came to Washington as a private-sector patriot, offering to take government to new heights, and found himself smacked down to earth by powerful forces of gravity and inertia. It’s a convenient fiction. Musk’s flameout had nothing to do with gravity, and everything to do with the lack of it.” (Margi Vanderhye, McLean, Va., and Bob Rappaport, Arlington, Va., among others)
In The Chicago Sun-Times, Neil Steinberg recognized a familiar dynamic in Trump’s assaults on Harvard: “The president is venting his fury — a sentence I could embroider on a pillow and use to begin every column from now until 2029, since off-gassing his bottomless magisterial displeasure is the spoon stirring our national existence, now and for the foreseeable future.” (John Metz, Evanston, Ill.)
In Esquire, Charles P. Pierce exposed federal lawmakers’ stealth: “The basic unfathomability of the federal budget process is such a boon to legislators who want to do mischief without leaving any fingerprints on the gun or DNA on the knife. There are so many statutes, regulations, informal rules and customs, and parliamentary bear traps that an appropriation to clean Lincoln’s nose on Mount Rushmore might well also commit the federal government to building 12 nuclear aircraft carriers in a boat basin outside Yankton, South Dakota.” (Parashar Patel, Concord, Mass.)
In The Times, Sam Roberts mined the origins of an urban treasure. “It’s been said that Nelson Rockefeller, who as a grown-up managed the opening of Rockefeller Center, the real estate colossus in Midtown Manhattan, liked to play with blocks as a boy: the ones between 49th and 55th Streets,” he wrote. (Miriam Bulmer, Mercer Island, Wash.)
Also in The Times, Dr. Sunita Puri reported that the wishes of patients who were confronting their own mortality included the desire “to breed one last litter of puppies and inhale, one final time, the milky sweet of their young fur.” (Ian MacIntyre, Bermuda)
Joseph Finder reviewed “The Illegals,” by Shaun Walker, about Russian spies in America “who lived with fabricated identities as beautifully lacquered as a set of matryoshka dolls. These weren’t diplomatic spies with immunity; they were ghosts walking among us with American accents and, presumably, Sam’s Club memberships.” (Jack Grimshaw, Lake Forest, Calif.)
Ainslie Hogarth identified the social commentary in the new Stephen King novel “Never Flinch,” which “calls attention to the very real dangers of turning your convictions into accessories, exsanguinated by the impulse to broadcast them; of standing for nothing but your own image, satisfied by only appearing to have done the right thing. Thoughts and prayers alone won’t fix our problems; they might even obscure how little meaningful action is being taken to fix them.” (Mark Cameron, Suquamish, Wash.)
And Peter Mehlman responded to what he saw as the mirthless tyranny of Kennedy’s assault on junk food by heading to a grocery store and stocking up on it. “Within minutes, my cart held an old-school reunion while it still could: Wonder Bread, Kraft macaroni and cheese, Kellogg’s Corn Pops, Entenmann’s doughnuts (with the dark brown waxy coating they don’t even pretend to call chocolate on the box), Hungry Man (né Swanson’s) fried chicken — OMG: frozen White Castle burgers! — Nestlé’s Quik, now Nesquik (“Same tooth decay, one fewer syllable!”), whole milk, the once un-P.C. Uncle Ben’s rice and grossly un-P.C. Aunt Jemima’s syrup (both revamped), Oscar Mayer bologna and, just to keep current, maximum strength Pepcid,” he wrote. (Matt Masiero, Richmond, Mass.)

Broadcasting from the nuclear bunker outside of the Pentex blast zone, I find myself in the uncomfortable position of accepting that I called it wrong. Who knew that the wandering Biden would stumble into a means of igniting WWIII to keep the government out of the hands of Donald Trump and his weird cabinet selections? I mean, Dr. Oz over Ben Carson? There are multitudes of criminal bureaucrats plotting their civil war to keep from answering for their treasonous acts, but they were, no pun intended, trumped by Joe Biden’s handlers when they approved long-range missile strikes on Russia proper.
What I find more astounding than that is that this act of national suicide, with extreme nuclear connotations, was done so in such a quiet fashion. If one were not tuned into the alternative media (AM), they would think that the the only story worth comment was the nomination of Matt Gaetz as Attorney General. Despite the fact that during a nuclear exchange no one will give a rat’s ass who the intended Attorney General is, or will be, the MSM makes out that it’s only concern is the destruction that can come from such a nomination rather than the destruction of a nuclear blast or two.
Where is the Special Coverage of the impending nuclear war complete with running countdown of the anticipated Putin response and gathering all sorts of military guests to explain to the American people what a nuclear exchange would look like and what to do during an attack? Hunker down or evacuate? This has been done several times during such high-tension periods in American history as the daily reports concerning the Cuban Missile Crisis.
