The (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Hives at Knitting Factory
Tumblr media
Full gallery available on my website here.
On Saturday, November 17, 2001, I photographed two bands from Sweden: The (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Hives in the main room of Knitting Factory. I believe this was The Hives’ first ever tour of the US and I would document two of their shows in New York City again 22 years later in support of their first new record in over a decade. T(I)NC performed at Bowery Ballroom with Rocket From the Crypt earlier in 2001 and a gallery from that show is available on my website here.
I previously discussed photographing The Hives with Jeanette D. Moses on DP Review and that interview is available on that website here.

Scandinavian musicians do filter their own influences into their own peculiar way. The Hives, for instance, are a fine band, but let us not call them the authentic rockers. Mind you, I'm not disparaging them, they are fabulous for what they are, i.e. a postmodernist rock band, and I think they embrace that. Sure, they can rock like crazy, yet they have an edge for me over many modern revival rockers for being in on the joke. You have a hunch they are always that close to a strong laughter thanks to them being delightfully over the top. Scandinavian musicians tend to go there thanks to them rejiggering the inputs into their idiosyncratic path. However, I wouldn't call them a parody, they are more like an homage on steroids.

Officially charting into another AU! Mortal Kombat Skool Days and Transformers: Instruments of Destruction are now being joined by a remakequel (a phrase coined by my friend Kyle) of one of the most underrated series the Blue Blur was part of...
SONIC UNDERGROUND ENCORE
While I really like the show, I admit it has issues. But for my version, it will be more mature in its themes, similar to SatAM and the 2000's era of games. Plus, I imagine some of the main characters, some of which weren't in the original show, would be "voiced" by actual musicians. Yes, I'm keeping the music aspect. But instead of being cheesy pop numbers, I want it to be more like... well, without a better way to describe it, Crush 40.
CAST
THE RESISTANCE
Prince Sonic Aleena - Matt Walst (speaking and singing)
Princess Sonia Aleena - Lauren Babic (speaking and singing)
Prince Manic Aleena - Craig Mabbit (speaking and singing)
Shadow Rose - Benjamin Burnley (speaking and singing)
Amy Rose - Addie Amick (speaking and singing)
Miles "Tails" Prower - James A. Janisse (speaking)
Knuckles of Angel Island - Jensen Ackles (speaking)
Cyrus Leone - Miles Luna (speaking)
Agent Silver - Kellin Quinn (speaking and singing)
Princess Blaze of Soleanna - Kari Wahlgren (speaking)
ROBOTON REGIME
Dr. Robotnik - Jim Cummings (speaking)
Agent Sleet - Charlie Adler (speaking)
Agent Dingo - Clancy Brown (speaking)
SWATBots - Isaac Singleton Jr. (speaking)
OTHERS
Bartleby Montclair - Nicholas Manelick (speaking)
Queen Bernadette Aleena - Amy Lee (speaking and singing)
Keep in mind, this is just the base cast. If you have any suggestions, do tell. In the meantime, I hope you're looking forward to what's cooking! It's way past cool...

Cities believed to be 2000-3000 years old. (I LOVE LIDAR.)

TL;DR:
Using the laser-scanning technology, researchers have uncovered a complex network of farmland, roads and neighbourhoods in Ecuador's Upano River Valley.
The cities are believed to be between 2,000 and 3,000 years old, according to Rostain, who works for France's National Center for Scientific Research. [Rostain's] group's findings were recently published in the journal Science.

Huge ancient city discovered in Amazon
"Wow" was all archaeologist Stéphen Rostain could say when LiDAR (light detection and ranging) laser technology revealed several ancient cities hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest.
"It's a gift for an archaeologist," he told The Current's Matt Galloway.
His group's findings were recently published in the journal Science.
"In the Upano, it's a completely new approach [to] the human past in the biggest rainforest of the world," he said.
Indigenous archaeologist argues humans may have arrived here 130,000 years ago
New discoveries challenge our understanding of when the first people arrived in North America
LiDAR leads the way
Rostain has been working in the Upano River Valley for years. He says he started excavating there 25 years ago, so he's known about the site with earth mounds in the area for decades.
"What we didn't [know] at this time, it was the size and the global organization of this construction," he said. "This is really new, and the LiDAR showed to us a map of this road connecting cities."
LiDAR was introduced to the excavation in 2015, when Ecuador's National Institute for Cultural Heritage funded a LiDAR survey of the valley.
As part of the survey, specially equipped planes beamed laser pulses through the forest's vegetation, and measured their return path.
Tumblr media
According to archaeologist Jay Silverstein, a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University in England, this method allows researchers to create a terrain model of the ground underneath the forest.
"You've basically skimmed off all the trees and you're actually looking at the shape of the earth," he told Galloway. "Then we start to be able to see the patterns of what we call anthropogenic, or things that were made by humans as opposed to nature."
For Rostain, this method is indispensable because it allows the exact shape and size of the ground to be reconstructed without harming the forest itself.
Rostain says nothing gets destroyed by LiDAR, noting that the technology maps out the terrain without cutting trees or destroying the archaeological site. "It's just perfect."
Silverstein said science can indeed be destructive, as damage created during excavation can't be undone. That's why using non-destructive archaeology like LiDAR is extremely important.
"We are developing more and more non-destructive techniques that allow us to to plan our excavations much better to understand what we're looking at and on the large scale before we do our small-scale excavations," he said.
Humankind's potential — and fragility
As significant as this discovery is, Silverstein warns against making any assumptions about this civilization based on first impressions.
"When I teach students or younger archaeologists, I tell them that your first impression, your gut instinct, your feeling of what you see when you first see, it is wrong," he said.
What's at stake for the climate, deep in the Amazon
The Amazon rainforest plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate, but it’s under serious threat from deforestation. CBC's international climate team ventures deep into the forest with scientists to learn how climate change is affecting it, and what’s at stake in the fight to save it.
In this case, Silverstein said assumptions shouldn't be made about what the geometric shapes revealed by LiDAR represent.
"You don't know if you're really talking about palace plazas or agricultural fields when you see a rectangular shape in the ground," he said. "There's a big difference of what it means when understanding that society."
Nevertheless, these findings are confirmation of humanity's potential, said Silverstein.
"Whether you're we're dealing with Highlanders in Papua New Guinea or villagers in Mexico … we adapt to our environments, we figure ways to organize ourselves," he said.
"And given the opportunity and the resources and good fortune, we will organize ourselves and create more complex societies and we'll figure out how to better manage our water and build roads and build houses."
How recreating ancient recipes helps one food buff bring the past to life
Lessons from an ancient Athenian in an era of 'fake news'
There may be a grim lesson to be learned from these findings, according to Silverstein: civilization is fragile, and there's no guarantee that our societies will be around in the future.
"Everyone who lived in those ancient societies thought their society was fine and that they were going to live on forever, and that their children would live there and their grandchildren and so on," he said. "But something happened and it didn't."
"We blithely go through life and we get our warnings of climate crisis and warfare and threats. But we more or less assume that we're going to be here tomorrow and living just like we do today —until it happens."

‘ hc' habits
good habits:
sociable. he's easy to talk to and he's approachable. it's not difficult for him to make friends with any group, whether they're nerds, jocks, alternative, stoners, techies, outcasts, hustlers, gangstas, or whomever. although, he personally dislike hanging around the affluent crowds, he does have fun at exaggerating their social etiquette and watching them fall for his facade, when he's undercover.
listening (when he wants to) and studying. despite being a hothead who expressed the typical "bad boy" mannerisms when he was a teenager, you could never call him one-dimensional. just as he was street smart, he was book smart too. his studiousness could be attributed to his parents' strictness, but that'd be downplaying his natural penchant for building his understanding of subjects he's interested in. he's well-versed in interdisciplinary studies, including math, history, physics, materials/neuroscience, bio/neuromechanics, aerospace engineering, robotics/mechatronics, a.i., medical science, etc. under bruce's tutelage, he attained extensive knowledge on botany.
ambitious. piggy-backing off the above, while he has a fun with problem-solving, naturally in the detective field, teru desires to be a physician. he's good at crafting and working with non-western medicines.
regular workouts. before becoming batman, he was amazingly flexible and athletic. rigorous strength training, cardio, and frequent participation in various sports such as wrestling, baseball, swimming, diving, archery, and mountain climbing have been his therapy. if he wasn't so tunnel-visioned on medicine, then becoming a olympian would've had his heart.
protective. this seesaws over the borders of 'good' and 'bad' because while the first thought of possessing such a quality is appreciable, depending on the circumstances, he can be insufferable. it stems from all the losses he took in his life. the murder of his father, charlie's betrayal and untimely death, matt's near-permanent jokerization, working under dangerous corporate tyrants like derek powitz, the kidnappings of his loved ones, ace's abuse, and other life-changing events made him uncomfortable with his people involving themselves in a situations he believes he should be able to handle.
open-minded. for example, if he's seeing someone is willing to make an effort to change their life around, he's not above giving them a shot. the way he lived his own life years ago, there was a time he believed if it was possible he could make it to see twenty. he never liked talking about it, but if it helped him reach out to other troubled individals, he would (and has.).
humble. the city he protected sold him out and at times, have worked against him. it stung like hell, and it has added to the weight he carries in his soul, but to quote him, "small rewards are the best ones". if he helped at least one person live to see another day, and or was responsible for changing somebody's life around for the better, then he isn't looking for worship and public adoration.
bad habits:
emotional control. in his early batman days, it was his age, and traumatic experiences that affected his performance. it became progressively worse when his dna was spliced with vampire bat by dr. cuvier. while he has a better handle on it in presently as an adult, it's an affliction that keeps him mindful of his emotions.
judgmental. i mentioned earlier that he's openminded, he is, but there are still things out there he's biased against. first off all, jokerz. he understands how a problematic background can lead to dramatic and destructive decisions, but wearing clown makeup is... a choice. then, there's the chimera movement... i'll get more into this later.
vindictive. 'an eye for an eye can make the whole world blind', but teru will watch those who wronged him choke before his world goes black. he feels no remorse for the accidental killing of his father's murderer, nor for disfiguring mr. powers--the man who plotted it, in the first place. he doesn't shame himself for feeling absolved over the death of dr. abel cuvier, the geneticist responsible for teru's body and leaving him with an unchangeable condition.
vices. he's slowly weening off of cigarettes and caffeine consumption, and trying to tolerate the taste of miswaks and mushroom coffee to replace the need.
selfish. he's only human. sometimes he wants to tune out and get lost somewhere, far away from the expectations and drama. he may shut down, put his phone in vibrate, and decompress in whatever activity that gives him temporary joy.
disrespectful. he wasn't big on authority growing up. in his mind, there was no such thing as a good cop until he met barbara gordon. outside of his general opinion on law enforcement, he just has a mouth on him. it annoys people close to him and enemies alike.
argumentative. if he's passionate about a topic, the person on the other hand might be able to save themselves if they're able to come up with the most logical brain-busting response, it gives teru pause and a chance to reassess everything. it's not that he doesn't like to be wrong—he just believes in his heart.
i can go on, but stopping here for now.

PERSEPHONE’S LAMENT ⇢ a gcu installment
Dr. Erin Angelos was comfortable in her position as an attending physician in one of the top hospitals in the country. Still, something was missing. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it. But when a position opened up at Metro-General for a new outreach program, she couldn’t stop herself from transferring, uprooting her life to start anew in an all too familiar place—Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, New York. A place she hadn’t been to since she left for medical school.
Though the city was a bit different than it was when she was younger, much of it was still the same. Erin settled into life in Hell’s Kitchen as well as could be expected. Her new job entailed house calls and visits to various shelters, footwork she didn’t mind doing, and it felt much more satisfying than her previous position. However, no one anticipated the sudden, staggering surge in gang violence. Doctors were needed more than ever before and Erin was kept busy at the hospital and on the streets.
She was ordered to go home, get some rest, but with the carnage she’d seen, sleeping felt like the last thing on her mind. So, she found a little bar off the beaten path called ‘Josie’s’ and made a home out of a barstool. It was there she met Karen Page as she ordered another round for herself and her coworkers—a pair of local lawyers, Erin learned. Notable ones. Karen offered Erin a round at the pool table. And, although she wasn’t keen on the idea of butting into strangers’ spaces, it sounded like a decent way to get the blood off her mind. Karen introduced her to Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock and they played a round.
Who would’ve thought that an innocent game with strangers would lead to the destruction that followed? Or to a tumultuous relationship with one of New York City’s best lawyers—and it’s best defender?

More City of Fractured Dreams/Book of Farside Characters
Last batch for the moment (there's thirty characters total for City of Fractured Dreams and this makes 16, so just over half).
We have my favourite May-December poly triad and then Wynne (who I fucking love) and Liv (who might be the only character who is ACTUALLY a bad person through and through).
Enjoy!
Accessible text version below the cut.
Baqir (He/Him) | Queer
46 yr old Undersider
“The King of Underside”
Owner of a powerful bar in the Haze, the lowest level of Underside which is almost always covered in fog and smoke
The defacto leader of Underside due to his massive stature, power, and charisma
Only known berserker with complete control of his berserker rage and form
Is pulled out of his “stand strong but make no moves” stance when he takes in Imani and Matt
Eventually falls in love with Imani and Matt
Has a strong disdain for Liv that keeps her at bay, for the most part

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (765): Sun 21st Apr 2024
I was delighted to see that Broken Matt Hardy returned to TNA last night at their Rebellion pay per view. It's still bewildering to me that Tony Khan didn't see the value of a talent like Matt Hardy who has demonstrated his creativity many times in the past and that he can be a much greater asset to a company than just being used on a C show. I would have made up a commitee of creative wrestling minds like Matt Hardy, Jeff Jarrett, Jake Roberts, Jimmy Jacobs, Scott D'Amore etc and assign them to come up with a storyline each for a particular match taking place at the next pay per view. To be honest I think eventually he is going to have to do something similar because he can't go on being the sole creative force behing two AEW shows and ROH while also managing an American football team and a British soccer team.
I finished reading Vulcan's Hammer. This was an excellent novel by Philip K Dick and I think this might have been the one that convinced him that his true talent lay with science fiction. The climax features the giant AI computer that the human race has designed for itself named Vulcan 3 sending an army of small hamers with laser beams shootingout of their heads (yes really) to prevent it's destruction as a rebel has convinced it that it needs to preserve it's operations at any cost. It turns out that the previous outdated model Vulcan 2 has also convinced an army of rebels that they need to take out Vulcan 3 for the safety of mankind. In the end it turns out that both AI computers have played the human race off against each other in a simister game of chess with humanity as the pieces. The Vulcan 3 computer precedes 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL by over a decade and I don't think it's to far a stretch of the imagination to think that this story may have been where Stanley Kubrick might have got the idea of a rogue computer hellbend on self preservation. Next up in my Philip K Dick challenge is Dr Futurity. I'm deliberately not spoiling the plots of these novels before I read them because I want to be surprised and blown away by the imaginative plots and surreal imagery.
