Personal health hacks that have completely changed my life in the last 9 months.

Absolute number one is removing carbs from my diet. I had THE WORST crashes and lethargy every single day after my morning oat meal, after my carb heavy lunch, and carb heavy dinner. Despite being vegan my body lacked nutrients and calories from under-eating being plant-based and carb-overloading. 

Introducing grass-fed meat and high quality eggs into my diet. Red meat gets such bad press in the media, but personally it has given me energy, strength and I feel much better eating this in moderation. 

Little exercise each day. Not killing myself with a hardcore workout and then not being able to move for rest of the week (which I was doing previously). I now do a little each day. 1.5 - 2mile run most days, and daily stretches and weights at home. Nothing crazy, but a little goes a long way and I find it much easier to be consistent doing smaller bouts on my own schedule daily. 

Hormone health, ensuring I am keeping my hormones balanced. I make watermelon juice daily with 1.5 heaped tablespoons of flaxseed. Alongside that. I take omega 3, DIM, Selenium, Iodine, Vitamin D +K2, Evening primrose oil for womens health. I eat foods that support healthy hormones, broccoli, carrots, sunflower seeds and removed the foods that cause imbalances (carbs, sugars).

Removing all stress from my life. Including moving overseas, deleting social media and keeping my circle small but wholesome. 

Quit drinking alcohol. Initially I thought I would have the occasional drink but I truly have no desire anymore. My life is significantly better for not drinking. My body never responded well to booze. 

Sleeping properly for 7-9 hrs per night. Meditating for 1 hour before bed usually puts me in a completely zen mode for relaxation. That means my phone is switched off, I use a lavender pillow spray and light candles to set the mood for a goodnight sleep. 

Zeolite detox for heavy metals (currently in the process). I have Zeolith Med powder each day with water to flush out any toxins. 

Learning about gut microbiome, and probiotics..in the process of obtaining kefir grains to make my own batch. Making sauerkraut on weekends and introducing a wider variety of foods into my diet. 

These are completely personal and I can honestly say I feel better than ever. I wish I had done the above years ago, especially the carbs! I got a continuous glucose monitor of Amazon to see how my body was responding to carbs before I completely cut them off and I recommend doing this if you want to know more about how your body is reacting to glucose. 

*this all took time and effort, but once I removed the distractions, the meaningless socialising, the boozing, the scrolling I’ve had time to invest in myself + my health

When my bag gets empty I have to find another way to distract myself. I put on my soft leather boots and go down through the forest. The cool breeze stings my cheeks and I huddle into my jacket. I hoping to find something for lunch, It's not good luck to go home empty-handed. I was going to bring the strawberries, but I already ate them all.

So I start digging deeper into the forest in search of finding something new. I keep my eyes peeled.

In a clearing there is a small garden, flowers blooming. The season has just started, so the flowers are still shy. I don't want to ruin them by harvesting them too soon. I only take the primrose buds, because my mother likes to extract the oil from the young buds and not from the mature flowers. She says it yields more.

Right next to it there is a long branch of lilac lavender. If I wait just a few more days it will be completely perfect to be harvested and made into ointment. My mother sells them a lot to miners because lavender relieves the pain of tired muscles. But other than that, lavender has an incredible smell.

I run my nose through the lavender flowers. It tickles me. The smell can be much stronger as it matures, but even without its full potential already is extraordinary good. That’s why some women from the merchant area come to my mother's house just to get some. They rub the ointment on their skin as a perfume.

When I was young, I didn't understand. I thought it was a useless whim of people with too much money to spend. Today I know why they apply the ointment precisely on their necks. It was because that's where boys' noses go when they hug you. At least mine does that, every time. He puts his arms around my back and breathes a long sigh into my neck every time we meet again. I remember that I will see him today.

My fingers glide over the petals damp with dew. They are extremely delicate and soft to the touch, they almost seem to fall apart with my rough fingers. For some reason, I feel the urge to feel the soft sensation with my lips, so I touch the petals gently to my mouth. It's so velvety.

My stomach turns when I smell them once more. A cold runs down my spine, and I feel my legs go weak. Lavender really does smell divine and he would probably love to smell it too. So I pluck a branch and put it in my bag.

"His paintings show a Peeta who Katniss couldn’t reach even when he stood before her"

Peeta loves painting a lot more than speaking. 

So much has always been expected of him, so many words have been put in his mouth. Even now, he doubts his words because they’ve hurt the people he loves. His words and actions have hurt Katniss in ways he’ll never forgive himself for. But his art hasn’t. 

His art is a part of him that’s never been touched by Snow and his poison. The images on his canvases are the purest expression of himself. Untampered by the capitol's lies and deception. 

Katniss loves his paintings. She sees in them the man who comes running at the sound of her screams in the night. She sees the boy with soft eyes, the boy with the bread. The man who painted sweet Rue on the floor of the training center. Peeta who held the woman who sacrificed herself for him; as she died he showed her a sky that Katniss now sees before her on a canvas. 

His paintings remind her of the man she’s grown to love despite the death that has surrounded her. But she also sees the man who she failed to protect. 

Those paintings have harsher lines, razor-sharp edges, and striking colors. 

In them, Katniss sees pain and death. In those blood-colored lines sits a man full of despair. He is faced with having to kill the woman he loves. She then sees him alive, standing by her side, but she does not want him in the way he wishes she did. Katniss sees a man willing to die for her—the man who walked into a forcefield and lived. Crying, Katniss stares as Peeta is lifted into a Capitol hovercraft. 

His paintings show a Peeta who Katniss couldn’t reach even when he stood before her. 

They show white cells, Snow's extravagant mansion, roses that reek of perfume, Joanna, Annie; and many more unimaginable things that Katniss cannot face.

She falls to her knees, seeing Peeta sitting inside that suffocating room in District 13. Surrounded by white walls, faced with people he loves, but his mind tells him they don’t love him back. Just like Katniss never loved him back. She sees Peeta try to push her into the oil. Peeta sitting on the ground, a look of horror on his face as he asks to be handcuffed. Peeta saving her from the mutts, them and himself were both trained to kill her. Yet he didn’t. He cries on the floor, scared of himself, begging to be left behind. 

But past all the trauma and agony, Katniss sees flowers. 

Primroses. Peeta plants them in a garden that sits between their houses. She sees trust beginning to grow, both smiles and flowers blooming. Beginning to smile, she takes in freshly baked bread and the morning sun. She sees herself, smiling back, and she sees hope in her eyes. The last painting is the most beautiful, in it lays- “Katniss?”

Turning she sees Peeta, standing in the doorway with their children. Her beautiful daughter comes running up to her and latches onto Katniss’s dress. Smiling, Peeta walks over and kisses his wife. Both of them gaze at their son who rests in his swaddle.  

In their children’s faces, she sees innocence, hope, warmth, joy, and youth, as well as something else. 

She recognizes it in Peeta as well, the man standing before her is much different from the boy she met in the rain all those years ago. 

Turning back to the painting, she sees the same thing. On what used to be a white piece of fabric, sits a green meadow full of freshly bloomed flowers. Amid the sparkingly grass sits Katniss, holding her son in her arms. Her gaze is directed at the man she loves, he plays with their daughter who reminds Katniss so much of Prim. 

In their children, in Peeta, in his paintings, Katniss sees love.

Dandelions & Picnics - Peace has finally been restored once the War is over. Peeta & Katniss are back in District 12, still learning to heal and grow. They decide to have a picnic date in the meadow, away from the worries and reminders of the past. It was just them and the dandelions.

Katniss’ Nightmare - Despite the rebellion being over, nightmares and flashbacks haunt the Victors from District 12. Katniss has a nightmare that Peeta dies in the first Games. She wakes up in a fright and is reassured.

July 4th - It’s a few years after the Rebellion, but Katniss still thinks of the Reaping and how her sister is tied to those specific memories. Peeta tries to cheer her up to make the day a little bit better.
