What’s been going on with Silvia?

An update ft. sticky note doodles

After hearing that her dear friend the Six-Finger’d Scrimshander was living somewhere that wasn’t a house, Silvia has installed it in the guest room of her Side-Streets flat, where they’ve been getting along swimmingly.

Her professional life is going great! Ever since she and Lord Oswald J. Emerson struck a bargain—he writes silly plays, Silvia writes silly reviews, they create public beef that sells tickets and papers—the Prodigal Plebian has practically been printing itself.

Silvia’s also made a new friend, one Youthful Naturalist! She’s been lending him a hand where she can—trying to convince him to move out of his rookery, and keeping her kitchen stocked with jellied eels should he come over, and taking him wherever he wants to go in her zee-clipper.

In the meantime, she’s been growing frustrated with her lack of progress regarding her research on the Third City. If you’ve been with Silvia for a while, you’ll recall that she has been learning Yucatec Maya and chasing leads to discover if there are any pockets of Third City inhabitants untouched by colonialism where she could convince her remaining dad to move with her. (Hm? Inherently contradictory logic? What inherently contradictory logic?)

Enter the Sixth Coil and the freed captives. Several of them are from the original Third City. Silvia follows them to Venderbight, uses her broken Yucatec Maya to explain what she’s after—

They tell her: There’s no such place as you’re describing. We hang around in Venderbight, but even now, there’s nowhere untouched by the Masters, by London.

Silvia presses them—No, there has to be, maybe you just don’t want me there? Why not? Why won’t you let me in?? I promise I’m trustworthy, I won’t tell—

And she finally realizes that she sounds like a fucking conquistador.

Welp! No better cure for a crumbling belief system and self-perception than to zail as far away from your problems as possible! She and the Youthful Naturalist fuck off for a while and that’s when the Delight gets wind of them.

Speaking of wind. The Wax-Wind catches up with Silvia’s ship. Silvia gets a bad burn across the right side of her neck and shoulders.

Not to just rehash everything that happens ever in Evolution, but, uh, shit hits the fan, Silvia gets pretty traumatized. But secretly she’d glad that she’s helping the Youthful Naturalist, proud of both of them. Her search for precolonial Atlantis failed. But here’s another basket to put some eggs in. If they crack the secret to life and death, well, no one else will have to die like Silvia’s other dad, they can have all the time in the world to create their own utopia.

And the other basket of eggs is the Marvellous. She’s been so busy she’s scarcely had time to think of it [I’ve been on the lodging grind for 3+ months ;_;]. But can’t she just win and make the Masters let go of everything, set everyone free, end imperialism, or whatever? That’s how it works, right?

Oh, by the way, no one knows she’s been doing this shit. Not her father-ish figures, not her flatmate, not her partner, not her best friend, not her newspaper employees. Just her crew, and they are pretty pissed at her right now, so she’s been avoiding them.

Around this time, Silvia gets a letter from Shaw (one such father-ish figure) explaining about Nemesis and saying he might not make it back from his final revenge quest.

ALSO around this time (or maybe right after) Silvia gets what really sounds like a last will and testament from Jones (other father-ish figure).

And ALSO also around this time, Brett (Silvia’s best friend) is recovering from learning of the death of his partner.

Then Silvia forgets to be careful, and Caoimhe (her partner) sees her burns and asks what’s going on. She doesn’t buy Silvia’s story about a cooking accident she forgot to tell Caoimhe about (Silvia never cooks), and she really doesn’t appreciate that Silvia tried to lie. Caoimhe gives Silvia the chance to come clean.

So it all comes out. The Marvellous. The scientific voyages. The experimental surgeries. The multiple supernatural enemies. Caoimhe is appalled that Silvia would be taking all these risks without saying a single word—she thought the most dangerous shit Silvia was involved with was printing ill-advised articles about powerful people. Caoimhe’s extraordinarily patient and supportive, but Silvia didn’t even tell her!

The breach of trust frays at their relationship and drags Silvia further into guilt and despair, especially because Silvia’s support network is spread rather thin at the moment!

So… here we are. Silvia’s standing in the crumbling ruins of her relationships and ideals. She needs to help this 20-year-old cheat death, and then she needs to beat a bat at cards, and she’s so, so sad about everything.

Winters:

Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac, the live at warner brothers edition. Absolutely loves Fleetwood Mac, would drag Nix along to see them in concert, he just adores Stevie Nicks. I could see him just singing this so loud in the car, putting his whole soul into it.

Nixon:

Shots by LMFAO and Lil John, it just depicts his life, gets him hyped to do shots, also an excuse to do shots, "The song is telling me to do it!" Will put it on every time they pregame so that he can drink and dance.

Lipton:

Kiss from a Rose by Seal. I can imagine Lipton singing this, he loves this song so much. He is so serious as well when he sings it, he means every word, might have secretly choreographed a whole dance to this, but will not tell a soul about it. Speirs might have spied him doing it and just watched with a little grin on his face.

Speirs:

Master of Puppets by Metallica. You cannot tell me this wasn't playing in his head and he sprinted through Foy. Doesn't head bang just appreciates the music. Constantly playing in his head whenever he does cool shit.

Eugene:

Come away with me by Norah Jones. This song is so sweet just like him. I can imagine him just sitting daydreaming about leaving with Babe, like the song says. It helps him unwind after a stressful day, he just sits and listens and daydreams about being in field where the yellow grass grows knee high. It helps him escape the sadness and he just is able to put himself in a nice headspace.

Babe:

No thoughts empty head just Teach me how to Dougie by Cali Swag District playing. He will have this in his brain constantly, and is just doing the dougie in really tiny movements so that no one notices. When he looks spaced out it's because he is in his brain doing the dougie, let him finish his performance before you talk to him, you can tell when the song is over you will see him take imaginary applause.

Welsh:

Love on Top Beyoncè. HE IS A BEYONCE FAN LET ME TELL YOU! Him and Kitty love her! Kitty was her fan first but Welshie definitely fell harder. He sings this to Kitty as he butchers the high notes. He bops around the room, her music just makes him so happy. Kitty and him have been to multiple of her concerts and having a fucking boogie in the pit.

George:

Scatman by Scatman John. My god don't let George play this, you will be kinda scared. He tries his best to scat but really he is just yelling random syllables at you. He will run around the room scatting furiously, he thinks this song is equally hilarious and the best song in the world, he loves it. You will be crying laughing as he performs this for you. Up in your face scatting, like we can all imagine what he looks like doing this right?

Toye:

Burn it to the ground by Nickleback. Just Toye and this song idk scratches an itch in my brain. I can see him just scrunching up his face jamming out. Also this plays in his head when he wears his brass knuckles. This is his fight song. He loves the grungy guitar and yelling vocals. Will sing the song if drunk enough, but will try and fight you at the same time.

Bill:

Come as you are by Nirvana. Idk also same as Toye it just scratches an itch in my brain, more lowkey but this is his chill song. Will listen to this while having a bourbon. Will sing quietly to the song. This plays in his head when he walks anywhere it's his like I'm a bad bitch song. Blast it in the car windows down with a hot chick in the passenger seat, you see him in his fucking sick ass car, shades on and you just want to be him. Why is he so cool? It's the song! But also Bill is just cool.

Liebgott:

Yeah! by Usher ft. Lil John and Ludacris. This is his song that he just pulls bitches with and by bitches I mean Web ahahaha. Just fucking slays the dance he does to this, like is he from step-up? Moose from step up vibes very that! Like ok stop it why are you so hot? He just is so smug and kills it every time. Ugh I can imagine it and he is so hot. Like he is just got chicks grinding all over him and he is the star of the show still. His smirk and dancing. OMG HOT!

Web:

Prada by cassö, RAYE, D-Block Europe. A classic white girly song, loves the part where is says I got strippers tits in my face. Bounces up and down super drunk. Does a motorboat motion at his favourite lyrics, has people he is dancing with has his arms around them just jumping up and down.

Donald:

Low by Flo Rida, T-Pain. This is his jam! Goes absolutely mental when it is played, will stop and dace no matter where he is! Played one time when he was in the supermarket with Skip and Alex. They left him in the aisle having a dance party by himself. They went and got him when the song stopped playing he was a sweaty mess and all of his items he had collected were scattered over the floor. Will pull out his one party trick which is his back bend.

Skip:

Rock this Party by Bob Sinclar. Nothing gets him more hyped that this song. Will move his whole body to this song, if you watch him you're worried he's going to dislocated something. You've never seen someone jump as high as he does to this dance. This song will cheer him up whatever mood he is in. He just can't fight the infectious beat. Don and Alex played it one time for him when he was crying, it ended up with him still crying but dancing like a maniac.

Alex:

Axel F by Crazy Frog. I just see him like crab shuffle dacing around the room, like the you can't touch this dance move. He will run and run to this song if it plays when he's on his morning jog. This song is what got him up Currahee. He sung it in his head the entirety of Tocca to help him get through PT. Bahahaha. Somehow good at the weird vocal lyrics it has.

Buck:

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. Buck loves this song, the steady drum the classic bass riff. This is his marching song. He walks everywhere to this song. But he is so fast when he does it cause he keeping pace with the drums, so don't go on walks with him if he brings his headphones you will be left behind. This is his hype song. Plays air instruments the song, will do the air guitar solo and kill it.

Martin:

Don't stand so close to me by The police. Listen he likes the song sure but the title is him to a T. Don't stand close to me is his motto in life. He likes his personal space and he will play this song if he thinks you're getting in his bubble. He will just stare at you while it plays, until you get the message.

Perco:

Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas. We know that Perco is a fast runner it's cause this is playing in his head as he runs. Does his amazing B-boy skills to this song. Popping and flips. You just watch him absolutely devour this song. He is a freestyler but omg he just fucking kills it.

Bull:

Fake ID by Big and Rich. Has the whole line dance to memory from the movie footloose, which is one of his fav movies. He is so good at line dancing and he just loves the moves to this song. Is in his happy place doing the dance, just grinning!

I saw you like Daisy Jones & the Six and sapphic stories and I've just gotta ask you: have you heard of Burn the House Down by Kenna Jenkins? It's an a fictional memoir/oral history (Ala Daisy Jones) abt the 1st woman president and her secret sapphic relationship/bearded marriage with her mlm best friend/narrative foil. It also has a subplot about arson at the White House, ft. An entirely queer main cast and really fleshed out characters, and a really satisfying ending!

I hadn't heard of Burn the House Down, so thank you for the rec!! :) It definitely sounds like something up my alley. Is Amazon the best place to get this or is there another place I'm missing? I didn't see it on Bookshop.

Girls Can Kiss Now by Jill Gutowitz - validate your teenage experience and read this. The short essays make it a breeze and it's extremely relatable.

Greedy: Notes from a Bisexual Who Wants Too Much by Jen Winston. Okay tbh the title was really off-putting to me because I was feeling self-conscious about being bi and in a long term monogamous relationship (so many cheating stereotypes), but ultimately I picked up the book and then couldn't put it down. It captures so much of how I felt coming of age in the closet and why I constantly feel invalidated. Love you forever Jen Winston <3

Thanks to Detective Jessica Jones’ superhuman strength, she was able to carry the twelve-year-old human-sized koala up to the Avengers’ floor with no problem.

Johan was still crying by the time they reached the common day room, where everyone else seemed to have migrated to for the evening.

"Wha— why does it keep on coming," Johan complained after her guardian placed her on the couch next to her friend Win. Unfortunately, her vision was too blurry with tears to bother identifying who her seat mate was. "Jess, make it stop."

"Sorry kiddo. Let’s wait until Romanoff gets here with your stuff." For someone who hadn’t seen her cry before, Jessica was awfully unalarmed about witnessing such event. "When was the last time you cried?"

She kept blinking in an attempt to clear her vision, but to no avail. "I think I was five."

Jessica made a sound of understanding as she nodded to herself, "We’ll be here awhile, then."

"What? No," she protested. "I look weak."

"You’ve bottled everything in for almost eight years, Johan. You’re not weak," her guardian immediately disagreed. "You just need to let it out."

Johan didn’t like that, so she cried harder.

Without her Rubik’s cube in her hand, Johan couldn’t control her jumbled thoughts. Without any other distractions available, she resigned herself into letting her dark, chaotic thoughts drown her.

Loathe. Young. Archangel. Four. Deception. Spring. Clever. Stark. Orphan. Eighth.

Thanks to the updated dosage of her medicine, those ten words no longer had an effect on her — for the time being, at least. As such, she was able to ponder them without her poison kicking in for her unfinished mission.

Thus, she was able to wonder: Why was ‘Stark’ the only trigger in English?

Triggers were meant to be random, to decrease the likelihood of them being spoken accidentally. However, they were always in one language — often Russian or Romanian, but not both. They could be Sokovian or any other Eastern European language, too, but certainly never English.

And yet, for some reason, Phantom Riptide required ‘Stark’ to be there, despite HYDRA’s pattern basically dictating that it shouldn’t. So why—

Johan remembered the memory she woke up from thirty minutes ago.

She remembered the pool of blood by her feet.

She remembered the skull with six tentacles stitched on their breast pockets.

She remembered—

Johan remembered them saying, "Stark’s eyes."

"She’s dead." Johan’s tear ducts were still working overtime even after Natasha came back with her Rubik’s cube and other belongings. "I killed her."

There was a bitter taste in her mouth, but she chose to ignore it. The metallic taste of blood had filled her mouth far too many times to be overly concerned. Besides, it was the irrevocable truth; it had always been so ever since then and no amount of solved Rubik’s cube could change that.

"That’s not true," her guardian was ready to defend her from herself.

In all honesty, both her and Jessica thought that having her Rubik’s cube would stop her crying. However, that didn’t appear to be the case. If anything, the cube just worsened her crying — since it helped her organize her thoughts.

Johan shook her head. "They were asking for me," her throat burned, cracking her voice. It was nothing to her now, after all she had been through. "Well, actually, they were looking for an Anastasia Stark."

Stark — it hanged in the air like a dense fog. It made the room temperature drop a few degrees and made everyone else unsure on how to go onward.

Johan could feel the sudden change in the atmosphere, but she couldn’t be bothered to investigate why. After all, she knew it was a name the Avengers were used to hearing, given that one of them was a Stark himself. She figured they were just mystified as to why that surname was connected to a different name other than the ones they were used to hearing.

"Johan—" Jessica started to interrupt.

"There’s something else." She didn’t indicate whether she was aware that she cut her guardian off or not, as she merely kept her eyes on the Rubik’s cube. In under an hour, she had already solved it fifteen times — no matter how many times she requested people around her to make it as difficult as they could. "My mom and someone else . . . they kept referring to me as—"

Johan halted. For a moment, she just sat there, unmoving. The flow of her tears stopped suddenly. Her face, too, was void of any expressions. She was, in simplest terms, a perfect personification of a petrified statue.

Clever. Stark. Orphan.

Stark’s eyes.

Little Stark.

At last, Johan now knew why ‘Stark’ was needed to trigger Phantom Riptide.

"What is it?" Jessica prompted after her facial expressions changed so swiftly — from blank to confusion to realization to stoic — in under a minute.

She finally looked up from her cube, her eyes knowing, "‘Little Stark.’"
