Continuing on a bit from this post:
Tim, complaining about Bruce grounding him again: It doesn’t even make sense! It’s like everything I do is a problem now but I’m not doing anything different!
Kon, who thinks a grounding is when you get sent outside to do yard work: Have you tried digging a hole? Like a lot of holes.
Bart, whose punishments are typically doing chores without powers: Or raking leaves?
Cassie, who knows exactly why Tim keeps getting in trouble: … Does Bruce know you’re at Titan Tower?
Tim: No, why?
Cassie: No reason.
***Later that day***
Jason: Why is Tim digging a grave in the front yard?
Dick: He got grounded again.
Jason: So… is it for him or Bruce?
Dick: Not sure yet.

Remember when Duke referred to himself as Robin while talking to Batman and then everyone spent the next 8 years saying it's illegal to expect him to be included as a Robin in anything, ever.

in speaking of the barbie movie i'm thinking about the time one of my older sisters tried to insist that it's "for everybody" and she explicitly said something along the lines of "it's for women to feel empowered and for men to learn to stop being so terrible" and that really is it huh. that's really a perfect distillation of why this movie falls so flat for me it's that black and white superficial view of gender that cis society just can't seem to escape. again, trying to interact with cis feminist media is just painful as a trans man because cis women just refuse to acknowledge our existence or their role in our oppression.

Thinking about that time I had my discord custom status as "who will pray for me when I'm gone" right after npmd released and my cousins super religious friend dmed me and said "I'll pray for you, and Jesus will love you forever and will pull you through this rough time in your life" and as someone who isn't religious at all I thought that was the funniest thing ever

i think it'd be fun if while the master was on gallifrey and messing around in the matrix he found about abt the confession dial. not the sanitised story that twelve might've told missy during the vault but the actual real 4.5 billion years of the time lords using twelve's own will and testament as a torture chamber story. and he loses it. and he burns gallifrey. except he can't ADMIT that's why he did that he'd look SENTIMENTAL he'd look like an IDIOT so instead he makes up a story about how he found something in the matrix something so horrifying and awful and unbelievable that he HAD to destroy the time lords. and then thirteen ends up on gallifrey and digs a little deeper than he had and manages to reconstruct some of the missing files and when she runs back into him she's like i finally found out why you burned gallifrey and i can't believe they did this to me i can't believe they wiped my whole life and experimented on me and built the time lords from my stolen dna and the master's like yeah while mentally he's like hm i'm sorry they fucking what

thinking abt botw!zelda after ganon shows up and is wrecking everything. because she doesn’t go straight to the castle- multiple people tell link she talked to them after the calamity started. she told impa that the divine beasts are the key. she traveled all the way to the heart of the lost woods to lay the master sword to rest and talk to the deku tree. presumably she talked to a few other people too, they just didn’t survive. so i’m just. thinking. about zelda, terrified, knowing what’s happening to her people, but stopping before rushing in to actually think things through. stopping to put contingencies in place. because that’s such a zelda thing to do isn’t it? to do all she can to guarantee a victory she may not live to see? in skyward sword she knows what will happen after she seals herself in amber, because she has lived through it both as herself and as hylia. in twilight princess she does what she can from the confines of her tower. and now again she keeps her head and does what she does best- she leads. her plan relies on her trust that others can and will do their part, because it is the only way to save them all. all the way back in skyward sword it is established that one would not- could not- exist without the other and that still holds true after millennia- it is she who saves his life with her decisiveness and wisdom, and he who saves her with his strength and courage. and now here she is again, and her world is crumbling around her, and she is laying down the dominos, and link is the force that sets them falling, and on and on forever and ever until the gods are dead amen.
just thinking about every zelda, in every legend, knowing what is happening to her people, and forcing herself to think of the future before the present. to think of others before herself. because that is what the goddess within her knows she must do.
and on and on, forever and ever, until the gods are dead, amen.

I was at the beach with my sister and my niece the other day, splashing around in the water, and the subject came up (as a follow-up of a previous conversation, not because of where we were) of a guy from our area who got attacked by a shark while on vacation. And we’re in the water, not anywhere near a place where sharks have ever attacked (on account of they don’t live there), but still in the ocean, and my niece can be a bit of an anxious kid sometimes, but it doesn’t occur to either of us adults until a moment too late that maybe this topic of conversation would be better suited to somewhere, anywhere else.
And the reason I’m sharing this story is because of what my niece did next. She immediately put her hands over her ears and said, “Mama, I don’t want to listen to that, it’s scary for me.” To which my sister replied, “That’s okay, sweetheart, you don’t have to listen,” and then finishes what she was telling me. When that part of the conversation was over a minute later, she waved to my niece, who had moved a bit farther away to help avoid overhearing, and let her know that the scary part was over. My niece came back over and we went right back to splashing and playing in the water, no harm done.
And I can’t help but thinking, what a healthy response, actually. My niece knew that she was likely to be freaked out by the topic of conversation, and just opted out. She wanted to keep having fun at the beach, and that wasn’t going to happen if she was worrying about sharks. She expressed her boundary, showed what she was going to do, and did it. My sister’s response respected and validated her boundary, but also made it clear that the existence of a personal boundary doesn’t necessarily dictate other people’s actions when their boundaries are different. And the way it went down, so calm and direct from both of them, felt very much like a learned behaviour.
My niece is really lucky. She’s got good parents who understand her and do their best to give her what she needs. But at the same time, if an anxious 8-year-old can learn to take ownership of her experience of the world and avoid the things that will upset her without feeling the need to control everyone else’s actions and/or demanding things be completely eradicated from existence just because they bother her personally, it kind of behooves us older people to try and do the same.

clytemnestra loses iphigenia at the onset of the war and is never able to love any of her other children, because she can focus all her energy on revenge
andromache loses astyanax in the last days of the war and still loves her child born into slavery, having no power to get revenge but focusing her energy on his survival
clytemnestra's power is limited and gendered, and certainly many real enslaved people have continued the cycle of abuse with their children... suffering makes people worse in almost every way and every case, etc. but i do think it's an interesting point of comparison for the victimization of each woman with respect to her children in these tragedies. clytemnestra's most important fantasy is of getting revenge for her dead child, so that in a way she sacrifices her other children, and andromache's is of getting to keep her living child

like i said before, i'm showing my sister arcane, here are some of her thoughts (we just finished ep 2):
she's not vibing with vi (haha vibing with vi)
"it's hard to look at heimerdinger"
"marcus is a bitch"
mylo gets on her nerves
like i said in the linked post, benzo and vander give off boyfriend/fwb vibes (specifically from the "above average" comment)
her ranking of the 5 kids (1. powder 2. claggor 3. ekko 4/5. vi and mylo (it flip flops depending on the scene) we counted ekko because...we felt like it)
"vander's better than me cause 'get the f out of my bar.' go drink somewhere else, oh wait, you can't"
"almost the whole council is a bitch. specifically the one with the ginko nuts"
the way they look unnerves her (like the way they look/are designed (ex: silco and singed) and especially the way they move)
"deckard is a bitch"
"viktor, don't sneak up on someone like that. 'oh am i interrupting?' YES"
she had a slight concern about caitlyn and jayce's age gap
"poor powder at the end with the thingy and good direction of vander's face of noticing the thingy" (by thingy she means the stuffed animal)
update: we finished all of arc 1

something I’ve been thinking abt is how many people think Makoto is immune to despair. I don’t think he is. I think becoming the ultimate Hope was BECAUSE he felt despair. He wouldn’t have fully reached that point without Junko. Makoto becoming such a beacon was his last attempt to avoid completely falling and it wasn’t because he didn’t feel despair, it was because he was too damn stubborn to allow everything to go to waste and he refused to sacrifice his beliefs for someone else’s. His inner monologue tells me he DID experience the same new low the other suvivors did in the final trial, but at the point where he had the choice to give up and die, he looked at the others and he looked at Junko and he couldn’t allow it to happen, not out of self preservation, but because the idea that Junko would have control over their lives made him FURIOUS. and that utter refusal to die kicked in, wether luck or otherwise, and he made the concious effort for one last push while something in him was breaking. He had to be broken in order for the Ultimate Hope to come through so aggressively, bc it could only exist in the face of the Ultimate Despair. He snapped the same way she did, but in the other direction. In what could have been his final moments he chose to embody everything Junko wasn’t, and every single optimistic and luck fueled ideal in him suddenly charged forward and pushed him. It was a combination of the final straw and a choice. Makoto isn’t immune to feeling despair, he’s just too stubborn to fall into it of his own volition. I think that’s why I like that scene in DR3 so much. People were SO SHOCKED Makoto actually fell for the tape, that he actually became despair for a moment. I saw people getting mad or disappointed, saying it was pathetic and Makoto seemed to fall from some sort of pedestal for them. Honestly part of me wonders if that sort of mentality, which clearly people had in universe, affected Makoto a bit. Like he started to see himself as less of a person, subconsciously. Prompting him to take more risks, less self preservation, act way more bold. It seems he has to be reminded a lot not to put himself in danger by his friends, to not do something too reckless. All over the place I would see in regards to that scene either this frivolous ‘oh this was just angst drama with no meaning behind it’ or ‘he can do better than that. he’s so weak’ or ‘come on, there’s no way he’d fall into despair, he’s the Ultimate Hope!’ This kind of mentality, which was kind of ironic considering Ryota was there the entire time saying the same thing and treating Makoto the same way. Like Makoto was superhuman. Like Makoto didn’t feel despair the same way ‘normal people’ did. In a way that was also how Munakata saw Makoto. Makoto stopped being a PERSON to the world when he became Ultimate Hope, he became a concept, a belief system, much the same way Junko ascended beyond herself. But the difference is that treating Makoto that way is the opposite of the reason Makoto became such a representative for hope. He wasn’t doing something no one else could. He was doing something everyone had the chance to, he just… was a little more optimistic, a little more stubborn, a little more ‘gung-ho’ about things. He just took the lead where no one else did, where no one else knew they even COULD in the face of Junko’s unstoppable force. She had overcome the biggest threats and obstacles in the world, what could one person do? And the answer Makoto found was, anything. Everything. It doesn’t all rest on Makoto, he’s just the one that was inspired to try to do what seemed like the impossible. But as evidenced by the change in his friends after that trial, it’s clearly not something only Makoto is capable of. The others pulled out of despair thanks to Makoto, but it was their choice to do so.
“But… this world is so huge, and we’re so small. What can we do…? No, we can probably do anything. Yeah! We can do anything!”
#makoto naegi#Danganronpa character analysis#Danganronpa#danganronpa thh#danganronpa future arc#I fucking love Makoto Naegi man.#I think there’s a fine line of nuance to Makoto that’s easy to miss bc he doesn’t really make it known#he’s not a pushover and he’s not overpowered. he’s a people pleaser but he will say what needs to be said#he’s an immovable object and the exact opposite of Junko but he’s also just a normal guy who’s optimistic and (un)lucky#he isn’t invincible but he has immense power to his words the same way Junko did#if anything his superpower is being kind above all else. he’s compassionate to some of the worst people in the world.#he was even conpassionatr to an extent to Junko. he didnt want her to kill herself despite everything she’s done#and he still acknowledges that for years she was a classmate and friend.#I do think the more he learned abt what she did the more he’s come to actually hate her though#post the first game he always refers to her without a suffix to her name which is one of the most subtle rude things you can do#it means you have zero respect for the person you’re referring to#and he speaks about her with some venom he doesn’t use for anyone else in the future arc#he’s not incapable of feeling negative emotions#I really liked the future arc scene bc it showed that Makoto DID experience enough despair to have overcome him if he didn’t refuse#and that it still affects him deeply. people treat him like he’s either this perfect ideal Chad or this baby chick who’s so delicate#and no one really focuses on how makoto shoulders so much and yet is still vulnerable.#honestly that guy was DUE for a mental breakdown even without the tape. it would have happened eventually#I actually wrote one based on him finally hitting a breaking point after giving so much of himself away and keeping nothing for himself#that his issues that he shoves down constantly finally can’t be held down anymore. Hajime helps him bc he knows how that feels#it was a LONG time ago that I wrote that but honestly if I can remember where i was going w it I might finish it#it was initially an rp but I could make it a fic#anyway. the point is Makoto is SO much more complex than people give him credit for#the most fundamental thing about him is that he’s normal and that’s ok! that’s what helps him rise!
