TWST FAMILY HCS PT2) Savanaclaw and Octavinelle

Feel free to tack on your own Hc’s too!!! I love reading what other people think and how their view of the characters and of Twisted Wonderland in general change from person to person!!!

Savanaclaw:

Leona:

-Farena: We already know Leona describes his brother as being carefree and relaxed, but deep under that I think he’s a deeply intelligent man (how can you run a kingdom and be stupid?). He tries his best to make time in his schedule for his wife and child, and even try to get bonding tike with his younger brother (which never works out well). He tries to teach Cheka as much as he can, often giving him little life lessons while they play games. He’s a very kind and straightforward man, often being blunt when he doesn’t mean to. He stands a little taller than Leona, with Orange hair similar to Chekas. He keeps his hair tied out of his face as much as he can.

-Sister-in-law Kingscholar: A strong and confident woman, not afraid to speak her mind when she wants to. She’s blunt and she’d let you know about it. She’s also very kind in her own way, often dragging Leona off and trying to have serious talks with him, which he appreciates but doesn’t show. She adores Cheka and often spoils him without meaning to, and will spoil Leona too (but indirectly in a way similar to Ace’s father’s). Also very intelligent and good at reading people. I think she stands a little shorter than Leona, but she holds herself higher, and he slouches, so it looks as if they’re the same height. She has long yellow hair (again, similar to the ends of Cheka’s) that she often ties back as well.

-Cheka: We already know him, so heres a few Hcs!: He sometimes asks his mother to do his hair the same way as Leona’s, and tries to do everything like him (such as standing like him, trying to deepen his voice to sound like him, throwing sand at various objects in the castle yelling “King’s Roar!!”)

Ruggie:

-Grandma Bucchi: As he said himself, a stern and prideful woman. I think she’d be on the stricter side, having to teach Ruggie how to survive rather than him having to face those hard truths alone. She likely stands a lot shorter, likely 5’0 (sorry to anyone whos that height), than most other beastwomen. She’s a lot physically stronger than she looks, often still trying to pick Ruggie up at his age. She tries to spoil him when she can, trying to make him relax after working and taking over the household chores (which he declines, still cleaning up when she’s not looking- which earns him a smack to the head with a broom). She’s also a prankster, quietly jumping out from corners and scaring Ruggie or one of the other children. I think she feels a lot of regret over seeing Ruggie grow up so fast in the environment that he had, but she’s the proudest grandma ever. Whenever he sends pictures back she boasts to everyone at home (“See that! That’s my grandson’s school! See that there! He plays magift and is one of the best on the team! Look there! He’s got those nice ceremony robes!”), and even boasts about him with what little baby pictures they have (“See him walking at such a young age? Isn’t he so strong?”) Will never stop talking about her grandson, ever.

-Neighborhood kids: I think they’re like little siblings to Ruggie, so I’m adding them. They try to tale over what Ruggie did when he was at home, helping people fix up their houses or entertaining the baby hyenas when their mothers have other things to do. They also leave gifts to Ruggie when he comes back, between little dolls they made, bracelets they thought he’d like, charms, or pretty rocks and leaves. He keeps all of the gifts, no matter how small.

-His mom (bc the poor woman deserves a spot)(Poor meaning unfortunate)(The more i think abt it, both. It means both. Bad time?): I think she looked a lot like him, but with brighter blue eyes than his. She was definitely a prankster at heart, leaving clever traps behind for any poor soul to get stuck in. She was a very hardworker much like her son, taking on any task she could find to help out her mother. I think she’d try to leave as much behind for Ruggie as she could, which would include little notes and scribbles about how she was feeling throughout her pregnancy and how excited she was for him. Ruggie also kept all of those safe and sound, in a small box he keeps in the corner of his room.

Jack:

-Grandma & Grandpa Howl: A very loving couple, who always make time out of their schedule for their grandchildren, whether it be for school events, emergencies, or if any one of them want to come by and talk. They met when Grandpa Howl got lost and wandered by Grandma Howl’s family’s cabin (which happens to be the one they, and the rest of the family, still live in to this day) and he spent the night. I think they fell in love at first sight :’)

-Mama Howl: A very soft and loving beastwoman who is willing to sacrifice anything for her children. She is often strict, and sometimes a chatterbox, but she always reminds her children to stay safe and that she loves them. She always pats their head or cheek when she walks by, even if she has to reach a little to plant a kiss on Jack’s forehead. I think her hair would be a little darker grey, and she’d definitely be a little more muscular and taller, reaching six ft one when standing straight up. She’d have the same yellow eyes as Jack, and her hair would be cropped shorter due to her still moving around a lot.

-Papa Howl: Very similar to Jack personality and appearance wise. He stands an inch or two shorter than Jack, but is still very muscular due to working around the house and in the woods (chopping wood for the campfire, dragging around tools, carrying three wolf pups at a time in his younger days (only one now wants to be carried, which hurts the poor man’s heart a bit)

-Baby brother Howl: Huffy and a little moody, but a hard worker even if he complains while doing it most of the time. That’s often with his parents, but when he does something with Jack he doesn’t complain a bit. He’s very attached to his older brother, looking up to him for his strength and strong morals. He often compares him to superheroes and star athletes in his mind, but sometimes it slips out, resulting in one very embarrassed wolf boy and another very flattered wolf boy, ignore their wagging tails, it means nothing. I think he stands pretty tall for a preteen, around 5’7-5’8 and growing taller by the day. Same hair and eye color as Jack. Acts like he doesn’t like to play games with his younger sister but will never turn down a game of tag.

-Baby sister Howl: An absolute sweetheart. She just wants the best for her family and will do whatever she can to make what they want happen. Jack is hungry? Good thing she made her special dessert (it’s a poptart with whipped cream messily piled on top with sprinkles and literal sugar cubed wedged in it, but don’t tell her you don’t like it, please she’d actually bawl). Her other older brother is tired? She can get him extra blankets! Mama needs help cleaning? She can mop (she really just throws water on the floor and praises herself for a job well done). Papa need to cut wood? She can- no, she can’t. Please don’t give her an axe. She’ll cheer him from the sidelines with a song she made up just for him instead! She has their mother’s grey hair and father’s dark brown eyes, and loves to do her hair like the princesses she sees on Tv! (Yes, Jack will wear a too-small dress and Tiara if his sister wants to play princess. No, he will not let anyone take pictures.)

Octavinelle:

Tweels:

-Mama Leech: At first glance, a very kind woman with soft eyes. Willing to open her arms to anyone who might need help. Then, a terrifying grin similar to Floyd’s as that poor unfortunate soul realizes the trap they’d been thrown in. She’s very kind and patient towards both her boys and husband, as well as their friends (even of she is on guard near their friends, throwing a few hollow threats to see if it’d scare them away)(She doesn’t like to share her babies). She dotes on the tweels as much as possible, indulging im whatever curiosity they may have. Floyd wants to know what going through riptide is like? They leave tomorrow to find one. Jade wants to know more about life on land? She’ll find as many books as possible and ask (threaten) people for their land belongings. She knows when too far is too far though, and is very skilled at reeling the boys back in if they get to that point. Will always call them her little guppies, no matter how big they get. I think she’d have a teal bob on top, with the underside of her hair being black (which makes her hair look color changing when she swims). Im her human form shes only a few inches shorter than her boys, ranging around the same as Jack’s mother.

-Papa Leech: The definition of old Hollywood New York mob boss. Strict and blunt about his interests and problems, and not afraid to cause any problems if provoked. When the tweels were younger and they’d wrestle and bite at him, he’d throw them off him easily, telling them they need to work to beat him, even if he was impressed by their teamwork at first. Will die to protect his family, and was likely put in that position many times in the past due to his uh… business. He values his wife and children more than anything, and has done everything in his power in the past to protect them from harm. When they went to NRC at first, he felt defeated and almost wanted to beg them to stay safe with him (not that his pride would allow it).(Both the tweels can see through his facade easily)

Azul:

-Grandma ‘grotto: A very stern and prim octomermaid. What she says goes in the Ashengrotto house, and she often catches herself making unnecessary comments. She does apologize. Also a very loving grandmother towards Azul, often babying him whenever possible (doing the classic “you’re not eating enough here take some more” grandma move)(She will smooch his face whenever possible when there are no business clients nearby). Tries to boost his confidence since she knew about what was happening to him (Chances are she went through the same thing- being an octomer as well) and dod her best to protect him and make him happy. She taught him how to write with his tentacles and encouraged him to do his best in everything he does.

-Mama ‘grotto: Another businesslady in the front absolute softie in the back situation. Adores her son and is incredibly proud of how far he’s come.I think she looks identical to Azul, but more heavyset and, of course, female. She coddled Azul as much as possible, which worked out well with baby Azul’s clingy nature. She had no shame in walking around with the little guy stuck to her (unless he smacked a tentacle to her face when she was working on her restaurant), and made sure everyone knew what a good boy he was. She would show pictures to everyone (similar to Ruggie’s grandma), but respects his wishes in wanting to hide pictures of his past. She still shows anyone who asks pictures of him at NRC (compliments to the twins, who send her updates when her son is busy), and will tell everyone how smart he is and how much he’s grown.

-Step-Papa grotto: A very professional man in every aspect of his life, which stretches to his relationship with his stepson. When he learns about the contracts and Azuls UM, he’s over the moon with how happy he is. He swam around with a little more pep than usual, flicking his tail and flaring out his fins the more and more Azul told him. He helps him reword and format his contracts to his advantage, and is always willing to talk with him about Mostro Lounge or (on rare occasion) some memories before Step papa Ashengrotto met Mama Ashengrotto (which always make him happy that Azul trusts him enough). I think he’d be a pretty generic looking Mer, with an average looking tail and such

Weiss - xSTJ, thought that she was ESTJ at first but ISTJ makes a lot of sense too.

Winter - ESTJ

Pyrrha - ESFJ

Emerald - ISFJ (I've seen some ppl type her as INFJ but I don't see how she is a Ni dom?)

Whitley - ENTJ? I'm honestly not sure abt that..

Adam - fucked up xNFJ, probably INFJ (seen him typed as xNTJ but his delusional thinking process imo screams unhealthy Ti and I think his manipulation of Blake and the WF is more Fe than Te

Qrow - was thinking ISTP but with the more recent volumes I'm really not sure..

Ozpin - Uuuuuh INTP maybe?? But I've seen some people type him as INFJ. INFJ 5w6 would make sense as to why he might appear as an INTP but idk..

I prefer enneagram over MBTI because I find it easier to type; so fair warning that I'm not an authority on MBTI-typing. But I do have have an ongoing RWBY typing that includes MBTI sooo... here goes !

I just can't decide between the two fors Ruby because... it kind of goes both way ??? Like Ruby definitely feels as INFP for the first half of the series; she's got a clear Fi > Ne preference... But then when she develops her Tert in V6 it's just... Te ? And she really doesn't show much Si actually she fits more the Si inf vibe in the form of forgetting about bad memories and her mom until people dig it up and she's like "nooo !" ?? So it looks like Te > Si but also Fi > Ne; conclusion idfk

Weiss • ISTJ 1w2 6w5 3w4 sp/so

Clear Fi tert rearing its head along with the 1 so I'm going with ISTJ; I also never really saw any Ne. Her type isn't too disagreed upon so tell me if you want a lenghtier explanation.

Blake • ISFP 6w5 9w8 4w3 (in some order)

Wooh this might get the anger of some (i have experience with the INFJ typers) but Blake goddamn REEKS of Fi. Less so recently but for the first seasons oh my god. She straights up catch you by the shirt and tells you "I'm doing the right thing"; and said right thing is so heavily dependant on her own subjectives values, which is why Blake can't reconcile with the current White Fang; because she doesn't have a strong Je vision of "what objectively works in the end", she only sees actions in terms of immediate right and wrong, and this b&w dichotomy stems from herself. What the WF is doing is wrong and the circumstances don't matter for judging the morality of their actions (of course I'm not talking about murder here bc that's pretty wrong ALL THE TIME but for example the stealing occuring in V1 bc of the WF is a better example)

Yang • ESXP 7w8 8w7 2w3

I'm sorry about that but I can't help you on that aspect anon, I still can't make up my mind about whether Yang has Fi or Ti. I have seen arguments for both, and i'm not the best at picking up on Ti so it's hard for me to tell.

I feel like she's Fe aux more than dom, but even about that I could change my mind. Pyrrha didn't have that much screentime in the end :((

Ironically I'm not sure about his type, kind of like you. I've mentionned I'm not very good at picking up on Ti right ? And Ren was a background character before V4 really. I had him written down as ISTP for a while but I've seen some convincing arguments for ISTJ so I might lean toward that actually but who knows. The thing I'm very confident about is his 5 fix = )

I don't see any Ne at all either so I don't understand the ENFP typings...?? Maybe the 7 stereotypes ? Imo Sun is just a very good boy; certified ESFP 7 himbo; triple positive sunshine !

Again, not enough screentime for me to make an educated guess. My only certainty is : not high Fi. It's the source of their conflicts. Blake confidence in absolute right & wrong, tracing lines in the sand between acceptable & unacceptable. Whereas Ilia can only shake her head and say "Because it works", or cry out "I don't know what else to do !"

I honestly don't really have much of an opinion about Adam's MBTI, i'm sorry anon ;; I don't know enough about how he thinks

Ozpin • INFJ 5w4 2w1 1w9

I would personally call him an INFJ. I... never really got INTP vibes from him ? I don't see the Fe inf work out with his interactions : he's always rather at ease, he knows how to navigate around people... His focus inherently lies on doing what's best for the "group", the people, humanity. Fx functions are both concerned with ethics, in different ways, and I think Oz reflects that well. He IS concerned with the moral weight of his actions, but it's a more adaptable and unpersonnal concern than Fi people. He regards Ironwood's soul machines as something wrong, but can still agree to use it if the situations demand it for example. So... if the INFJ + 5 makes sense to you, well that's what I'm typing him personally. I also feel like Ni fits him more than Ne. Ozpin has a very linear way of planning, he does use his fair share of symbolism in every day conversation... Even when taking decisions, he... kind of cares about the meaning of things a lot ? It's hard to explain but like; the way he highlights the difference between an army and a guardian, and the emotionnal response it brings. I don't know it feels like there's some Ni vibes in there x)

Oscar's type honestly isn't the one I would have the easiest time explaining in lenght but yea. It's mostly vibes; also just like Ozpin he doesn't seem to have a particularly Fi reasonning. And he feels more grounded, I don't really remember any Ni so... yay ?

Ironwood • ENFJ 6w5 1w2 3w4 (pre-Vol8); ENTJ (post-Vol8)

Might be weird if you think he was a dictator from the start, but I kind of entertained the idea of Ironwood being Fe dom ? From his very first interaction it was very clear that he was a Je dom to me; he's all about objective results; he doesn't give off the "internal framework" or "personnal values" vibe AT ALL; so it was more a matter of picking Te or Fe. He LOOKS super Te don't get me wrong; but he also has an enneagram tritype that is very common amongst XXTJs (and TJs stereotypes thus derive from it). And just like Oz, his focus at all time seemed to be the greater good and doing what's best for the people still. So I was like... Eh, a "harsh" ENFJ I think that's interesting ? Plus Fe ethics actually derive from their environment, kinda like "everyone agrees that Y is wrong", and if you consider that James is from Atlas... Well his way of thinking and ethics align pretty well with the military.

His character took a turn for the worse in V8 (whether too quick or not depends on who you ask) and past that point he's a clear ENTJ; but I feel like it was more debatable before that. Idk though I might be overthinking this in the hope of making more interesting combinations xD

Qrow • ISTP 4w3 6w7? 1w9? sp/sx

I don't really see anything else than ISTP for Qrow... But he's not a character I would want to find Ti arguments for either.

Most villains get called ENTJ at the first occasions tbh zlqfznhqzkf but I think it fits Raven for the most part actually...

The whole Schnee family has the same enneagram tritype in different order/different wings, it's ridiculous I think she has a higher Te than Weiss, and Fi inf fits her more. She struggles more to reconcile with her emotions and the idea of a personal right/wrong than her little sis.

Perfect example of a healthy 4, she's a great friend a cutie pie. ... Sorry we were talking about MBTI x) Well again, textbook ENFP. Not much to debate here.

I never got Fe vibes from her tbh, I just think she's a 2. And Fe as a function is very infused with 2 stereotypes. So yea. Like, she isn't even that worried about the morality of her actions or anything more than the other villains. She just cares more about her personal relationships and being loved, so she automatically looks much nicer, especially with 2 mechanisms of trying to make herself useful and needed. Also because she's surrounded by 8-ish people xD

ISTP doesn't sound too farfeteched, but I never MBTI-typed him either, sorry.

Bartholomew Oobleck • xSxJ 5w4

The only vibe he gave me is Si somewhere because of all his talks about learning from the past and everything repeats itself and it's a mine of informations at Mountain Glen... That's really the only time I tried to put down anything for him, and it was Si + 5. He could be some kind of xNTP nerd too for sure, but that's more vibe and I couldn't make an actual argument for it.

(Somehow I was about to ask about your thoughts on dusttale recently and someone literally read my mind before it... Idk how)

Anyways, I've noticed you have this trend about Frisk's being all sweet and forgiving while sans's tend to be the meanie or the difficult one, as much as I love the trend*Cough* dalliance, mafia, ... *cough*

Dusttale seems to follow this trend too, since frisk was possessed...

But WHAT IF she wasn't?

I know it might sound silly but, what if FRISK was actually legitimately evil in one of your stories this time, so obsessed with getting the perfect ending that she lost her morals and began to look for another way to set everyone free the "best way".

Let's all be honest. The reason we all did genocide was to see sans in action.

Like you said to yourself "it was all for her/him"

This is identically the reason WE'D do a genocide because we admire his power and have no common sense. Games don't need common sense and morals. We would go to absolutely ANY LENGTH to get what we want in them. That is the definition of determination. The will to keep going, may it be good or bad.

"It's just a game after all"

And frisk IS technically the embodiment of our choices, so she can be as evil as she can be good. This angel can easily be a demon too. A demon even PRETENDING to be an angel and blaming Chara. But who was really the one who killed the first monster here?

Just a suggestion for a double sided yandere relationship. I crave more edge and spice. I crave violence. I crave messed up and twisted and unhealthy and toxic relationships.

Why? Well it's actually kind of a paradox. This relationship is actually HEATHIER than frisk pretending to be the victim despite what most would think.(yes I'm an overthinker)

It's because I personally respect dust too much to be lying to him if I was innocent and it was all Chara. We all know who really was in control all the time. (It wasn't Chara or frisk.)

So if I were to be frisk and ACTUALLY liked dust as a person and not an object of entertainment, I'd be honest with him and confess that it was all me so he could rightfully hate me for it.

I'd be GLAD he hates me. Glad he'd despise me. Why? Simple. I want his attention, and the more he hates me, the more noble he seems in my eyes became I KNOW I'm the villain here *Yandere giggle*

A sorta "At least I'm not blaming it all on Chara like every other coward does" vibe.

Are you up for this mind-twister of a challenge? To simplify:

Frisk is controled and influenced by (determination/player/third-party/idk/maybe Chara??? Nah. Chara doesn't like sans) who can pretend to be innocent through her, and is yandere for sans.

Sans is yandere for frisk like he is in your head Cannon.

Frisk's vessle is just stuck in this L.O.V.E triangle tired of these two idiots games.

I bet the assistants and people helping run the shows for the megastars would be fun to talk about how they have to deal with the stars. -《¤》 [long!]

DJ's workers are probably stressed a bit trying to keep things clean and working without much assistance of guidance from DJ while also making sure DJ is happy with Dodo pops and whatever else they need. They are running around making sure DJ is center stage and working around DJ rather than with or under them.

Sayu's team probably have the to deal with their workers the least. All their workers need to do is make sure the internet connection between them and Sayu is strong. The team is probably really close to their workers because Tatiana made sure to get kind and knowledgable people for Sayu's team to make their work a bit easier.

Yinu doesn't deal with any workers except a few personal assistants that make sure she is healthy and hydrated and have enough snacks. Mama deals with the rest of the workers who are mostly in fear of her. They know if they mess up and something happens to Yinu that they will not only be fired but probably have severely harsh legal actions put against them, even if it was just a minor accident like Yinu tripping and knocking out a tooth by accident. Most of them are stressed but only because they have to make sure a child doesnt do something stupid, working the actual stage and stadium is actually fairly easy for them and if a shows goes really well then Mama makes sure to thank and be extra kind to all her employees.

1010 deal with only a select few of their workers, the ones who are assigned to boost their confidence and make sure they look perfect before a show. Neon J handles everyone else. He honestly makes a huge effort to get to know every single worker under him, which isnt as many as you would think considering 1010's popularity. He has some major trust issues so he only employs people he can trust, so extensive background tests and simulation tests get put onto the employees before they are actually hired, but those hired love their job. There's always a neat and organized plan that if followed makes everything hassle free and perfect for the show. If something goes wrong Neon fixes it himself and makes sure all employees and 1010 are safe before letting any of them leave. He worries a lot about everyone and even knows all his employee's names, interests they have, and sometimes even about their home life if they ever needed someone to talk to and Neon offered to listen and try to help.

Eve is kinda like Neon where she gets to know her staff very well, but she is a lot more lenient with who she allows to work under her. She wants people who have had true life experiences to have their input and knowledge for her art. Her employees honestly are pretty laid back since the artistic mind is best when given a chance to flow and Eve loves boosting creativity. There are a lot of people under her though too, make up artists, architects, special effects technicians, all that jazz! And she tries to get to know each one to have a community, especially since her shows can get pretty crazy with all the effects and objects moving around. Having people who can mimic her powers with special effects helps keep Eve in a healthy mindset too, which is why she needs so many employees.

Idk about Tatiana, she probably doesnt interact too much with the people of NSR tower other than the necessary boss conversations. But she is still a caring boss who will stop and talk with an employee of she thinks they need it. She has to deal with the most employees under her along with the megastars so she doesnt get to know a lot of them personally.

Hiii happy 4th hypmic anniversary, I know it's been like 3 days since the actual anniversary but *shrugs* anyways I wanted to answer the questions from this post to celebrate!! (This is going to be a long post lol, this just brings a ramble instinct in me)

1. How and when did you get into HyplMic?

I got into hypmic during the end of September/ start of October of last year, it feels like a lot of time and very little at the same time lol... so many people in the fandom have liked this for super long!! I got into it bc of someone I followed on twitter, they would talk about it sometimes and I was getting a bit sick of the music I listened too so I thought "why not expand my music taste?" Little that I know It was going to become the only thing I listened too lol. I also saw this like "a hypmic characther once said" video and I thought it was soooo funny I just had to get into it. I'm honestly surprised hypmic started in 2017 bc I was going through a god awful musical phase and knowing I could have liked it earlier in life amuses me (tho back then I thought anime was silly so it wouldn'thave happened either).

2. First impressions of the characters? Who stuck out the most?

(Another long one soz) I'm going to do most of them btw.

Buster bros: ichiro was the 1st chara I knew before I got into it, for a bit I had him mixed up with jyushi tho lmao. Tbh I didnt have a very strong opinion on him, I wasn't super into BB at the start 😅 same with jiro, I liked him the most, thought he was really cute. At the start I disliked saburo a bit lol, like he was just soooo mean and I didn't like that, also I wasnt a huge fan of new star at the start so I didnt like him bc of that either.

MTC: I had to fight a lot to openly like mtc, I felt a bit bad liking them at the start bc they're all like criminals and stuff lol. I have to be honest I think that at the start I didnt think about them like at all... the strongest impression here was Rio, he was my favorite also I thought jyuto was hilarious bc of the start of bayside smoking blues, I really liked his voice too.

Fling posse: ok so the moment I saw Ramuda I was like "this guy is evil as balls isnt he?" I was pretty right lol, I thought he was a child like saburo at the start bc hes so small, man fooled me there. I liked dice the most at the start, my 1st fanart is of him lol. I didnt have very strong opinions on Gentaro, I was surprised to find out his VA also voiced yamaguchi since I was a haikyuu fan if anything.

Matenro: Lol matenro was my favorite (still is), idk what was it but I saw all of them and I was like: great :D I dont remeber specific impressions tho.... It was almost like love at first sight lol. I remeber I really liked the fact that both hifumi and doppo had tips, I thought it was super cool.

BAT: ok so I also knew who kuuko was before I got into hypmic my actual actual 1st fanart was of him (I did it before I even knew what hypmic was like at all). I really liked him, I remember listening to gyara bam and being like "this guy rules so much", I really liked jyushi, as mentioned before I had him mixed with ichiro (they look nothing a like I dont even know how) I was super shocked to find out he was also a teen lol I was pretty happy. Not gonna lie I had no idea who hitoya was at the start (rip) I knew kuuko I knew jyushi but I didnt know him, I dont remeber being very big on him till like the dramas and getting more into hypmic bc before nothing nada.

Dotsuhon: lol I slept on dotsuhon for the looongest time, I literally only liked sasara, rosho and rei were just really there for me. Sasara was my favorite bc I loved his voice and tragic transitor gace me unrivaled latino vibes so he felt very close to me in a sense. I thought rei was a scumbag the moment I laid eyes on him.

3. Who was the first character you liked?

My 1st favorites before I found out about bat and dotsuhon where jiro and hifumi!! I really liked their voices and like over all attitude and stuff.

4. Which was the first Division you liked?

My favorite was matenro, they were just so cute and I liked how they were pretty chill and just had fun most of the time. Like how they tried looking all edgy and intimidating but they were all nice guys lol.

5. How have your favorites changed?

Not much lol my favorite is still hifumi tho know I have jyushi and Otome if were ranking on like top 3. I love all the charas now tho!!! Lol these are just my bigger ones. Division wise now my favorite is mtc, followed by bat I'm still a matenro stan tho!! All divisions have done some big growing on me so I love all of them anyways.

6. What was the first song you listened to?

The 1st song I listened to was battle anthem, I was super convinced it was the 1st hypmic song so I was surprised to hear it was division rap battle lol.

7. What's your favorite solo song?

Ghhhh this is so hard to choose... I actually like basically every single hypmic song.... if we're talking only 1t set that's easier to choose. Um that would be sensenfukoku, drops and champagne gold, I like all the mtc ones so I cant choose. Second set every single one is amazing so I cant choose either, tho at the start I disliked most of them somehow...

8. What's your favorite group song?

Ok at 1st i thought it was like an all division song but I just read it and it's just group song in general.... I love all of them but one of my biggest comfort songs is papillion so I'll say papillion. If were talking all stars songs that's easier tho: in no particular order its hoodstar (just heard the + ver and it slapped), survival of the illest+, glory or dust and hang out.

9. Which songs do you think are slept on?

Mmmmm I personally have no idea which songs people like more in general but I have seen a bunch of "my favorite hypmic moments" videos so I'll base it on that. I'll personally say any mtc song lol, in those videos theres always a surprising lack of mtc so yeah.

10. Do your favorite songs come from your favorite Division?

Yes, tho it's really no problem bc I like all songs😅

11. Objectively, who do you think is the best rapper?

I had never heard a lot of rapping till hypmic so I have no idea what good rapping is lol... I personally thinks everyone does a good job, I guess someone else can school me on that.

12. Which composers for HypMic do you listen to?

None... I honestly dont like know who composes which song.... I know very little about music and I dont look into it so I cant answer this one either.

13. If you had to get someone into HypMic with one song what would it be?

Oh :0 well I'm not very sure but if anything I think the way to go would be an all stars song bc you can get the feel of each division pretty good, then if they like that introduce them to other stuff. Of course this all depends on the person lol... my brother really likes strong songs so to him battle anthem was a good hook up... I quite personally would go for survival of the illest bc it has a good feel of the divisions and it's very silly which is a series staple.

14. Do you play ARB? Drop your friend code for people reading!

Nooooo I dont 🤧😢 I really want to but I dont think I would have space on my phone, besides idk how to download it, if you have to pay for it I dont have money and if it's only in japanese I'm learning at snails speed so I wouldnt understand it *cries a little* I have seen certain events tho, I find it funny.

15. What events are you hoping to see? What character combos do you hope will show up together?

Mmmm idk I have a post about but I'll love to see a sasara jakurai interaction, I'm pretty sure one has already happened but I want this funny man to interact with jakurai more. Some people mentioned that they would like to see more interactions between kuuko and samatoki and I agree, wheres that side of the mad comic dialogue line up? I'll also like to see hitoya and samatoki bc they're both into vintage stuff ish, like fashion wise so I think it would be interesting to see. Last I want a jyushi/jiro interaction idk of there's any but there needs to be I need them to interact!!! Or maybe saburo jyushi that would also be interesting.

16. Are you into any ships?

Yes!!! I'm a little shy talking about ships not going to lie so I don't talk about it too much lol. I like samajyu a normal amount, I also like ichikuu, jiroshi, hifudo and hitojaku. I like a lot of other ships too tho, like ot3 mtc is good so is fling posse tho my favorite is ramugen. Hypmic has a bunch of cute ships so it's hard not to enjoy most.

17. Do you have a yume/self-ships? Platonic or romantic.

Not really lol, I have considered reading self insert before but I always feel a bit embarrassed. If you do you're super poggers tho.

In LMV what’s the dynamic between James, Sirius, and Remus? I can see that Remus is into Sirius but doesn’t seem to be into James...I think Sirius is maybe into Remus and is definitely into James, I know he and Remus kissed but he seems to be preoccupied with James... are Sirius and Remus officially a thing?And James is married but is awfully attached to Sirius, but doesn’t seem to be into Remus. What do you see the relationships between the three of them as? Is this something that’s going to be explored? Thanks!

my main thing w the marauders (at least in LMV) is that it’s not like, per se, any of them are clear-cut ‘a thing’ or dating or whatever, notwithstanding the very in love married couple in the group. the dominant relationship at work (and the one that matters most to me) is the one between all of them, ie a bunch of people who are very close friends and all at least a little in love w/ each other. beyond that the degree and intensity of feelings varies. but LMV itself kind of traces the arc of everyone realising this, and just kind of gradually not caring about clean-cut social boundaries between them, instead favouring just letting whatever messy feelings they may have be known within the group. i think sirius and lily are the two people who have wised up the most to it by this point, as the story hopefully suggests.

to answer your question more specifically, like i mentioned above, there’s no 1:1 equivalence between any of the relationships in LMV- all of the individual relationships are kind of on their own page. so the core boys are all v tight friends, but beyond that their pairings are all very different from e/o. (sidenote it feels very weird to exclude lily from this discussion but fair is fair).

james-sirius is kind of the predominant one in LMV itself, which i swear is just me applying canon- yes, we barely see them interact in the books themselves, but the way literally every other character talks about it it’s obvious they were inseparable to the point of codependence when james was alive, so this translates into the fic. so yes, jamesandsirius™ does take precedence over most of their other relationships- which everyone else is fully aware of. the main disbalance in their relationship is just that sirius has a lot of familial hangups so he puts james on a bit of a pedestal (to summarise shocking amounts of meta i could write), and then james has lily whereas sirius primarily has james- though regulus is sirius’ Other Person in a sense. i think really james and sirius have been factually dating since they were like twelve but just don’t know it because they were so instantly on the same page they never went through the awkward motions. both lily and remus are at least subconsciously aware of this. so, increasingly (and to his horror) is regulus.

remus-sirius are also a very important relationship (to both charas) but on a different level than james and sirius are. from remus’ pov i think remus and sirius are to an extent closer than remus and james, even though james means more to remus, if that makes sense- they may not vibe as much but they understand each other. this last bit also applies to sirius. remus has a similarly pine-y feeling for all three other marauders (lily included as third, not peter, lol) but in a way sirius is the only one he feels like he can communicate this to (see: old married couple) bc he’s not so above remus’ cynicism. the same in reverse goes for sirius. the two of them didn’t kiss because they’re Now Dating, it’s more that after all the stress and drama surrounding the locket + their prolonged roommateship sirius kind of walks back into his flat, takes in remus’ presence, and is like. im now going to kiss you as revenge/thanks for caring about my survival. it’s definitely acknowledging a tension that’s been around for ages, but it doesn’t change anything about their relationship otherwise, yk? which i think they were both kind of worried about before but in the moment even as remus feels murderous he’s also relieved like oh, ok, this is normal actually.

remus-james is a relationship that’s unfortunately been placed on the back-burner by plot seeing as they haven’t hung out alone for prolonged amounts of time since the chapter where they hunted down the squib house. which is a shame bc they are also v close friends w a v interesting relationship! and remus is not immune to the james effect- he’s subtler about it, but he certainly hero worships him a fair deal, though unlike sirius he doesn’t have a giant blind spot about it. and james in return almost especially enjoys remus’ company because he’s the most closed off of his friends, even all these years later, so he’s still forever trying to worm his way into his head (heart having been long foregone) and their verdicts on things matter a lot to each other. i would say of the whole group they’re probably the least, hm, ‘romantic’ per se, but they are incredibly important to e/o, and probably best-suited to give each other advice that approximates the objective, despite their own biases. in a specific way they are the most self-aware of the dynamics of the group.

i hope that about answers your question- tldr this is obviously sort of a secondary theme to LMV that is gradually explored throughout the narrative, but my main point would be not to try and sort out clear-cut pairings because that is not what the story’s really about. they are just people who love e/o!

Doubly Dubiously Designed — Thoughts on: Danger by Design (DAN)

Previous Metas: SCK/SCK2, STFD, MHM, TRT, FIN, SSH, DOG, CAR, DDI, SHA, CUR, CLK, TRN

Hello and welcome to a Nancy Drew meta series! 30 metas, 30 Nancy Drew Games that I’m comfortable with doing meta about. Hot takes, cold takes, and just Takes will abound, but one thing’s for sure: they’ll all be longer than I mean them to be.

Each meta will have different distinct sections: an Introduction, an exploration of the Title, an explanation of the Mystery, a run-through of the Suspects. Then, I’ll tackle some of my favorite and least favorite things about the game, and finish it off with ideas on how to improve it. In this meta, a section in between The Title and The Mystery will be The Historical Background, where we’ll dive into a what a mess HER made of this game and its history.

If any game requires an extra section or two, they’ll be listed in the paragraph above, along with links to previous metas.

These metas are not spoiler free, though I’ll list any games/media that they might spoil here: DAN, mention of SSH.

The Intro:

Holy eff, what was this game?

With Danger By Design, game #14 and our penultimate Jetsetting Game, Nancy kisses Blue Moon Canyon goodbye and flies off to the land of fashion, francs, and fabulous found fripperies — France.

Yes, it was a struggle to come up with so many f-words that made a mad sort of sense.

DAN is a case where they had two or three ideas for two or three different games, and then someone got high and was like “what if we smushed them all together and don’t make them gel together at all”…only none of the ideas were fully formed, so what you get is a tornado – heh — of different things whirling together, but the second the momentum dies, you can see that nothing is actually part of anything else.

There are just too many ideas in DAN to make a game that has an emotional (not to mention logical) payoff, and too few of them are actually used throughout the game to make a game that’s interesting. Add in the fact that the characters are flat in a way that they haven’t been for 10 games and that Nancy seems to have no concrete motivation for anything that she does, and you’re left with a uniquely frustrating experience — and one that fails to take advantage of its unique location in any meaningful way, unlike the other Jetsetting Games.

The Title:

DAN is based off of Nancy Drew Files: Death by Design, which is objectively a more enticing title, though not accurate to the game’s story at all. As it stands, Danger by Design is a pretty good title; it clues you into a vague danger, it establishes not only that it’s about fashion — design — but also that the plot is being orchestrated by players that aren’t immediately visible — design.

I would actually hazard to say that DAN’s title is the most successful part of it; it doesn’t have any gaping holes, it’s catchy, easy to abbreviate — it’s only small problem is that “danger” is a super common mystery title, and that there have already been several other games with “danger” in the title — Stay Tuned for Danger, Danger on Deception Island — so it could improve from a series-naming standpoint. Otherwise, this title does all that it needs to without extraneous detail.

The Mystery:

Summoned to investigate why a famous French designer has suddenly gone crazy, Nancy’s going undercover for the…at least third time in this series so far. The designer, Minette, has taken to wearing a full-face mask with a discomforting lack of air holes and firing employees like most people eat mini-MnMs.

All at once, out of a tube, before they melt and discolor your hand. Or something.

Minette has been running behind, and Nancy is supposed to figure out what’s causing her temper tantrums and slipping schedule, amid threatening letters and insistent phone calls to the moulin where Minette houses her studio. Amy Grunhild, her boss, is wondering what’s up with her behavior and hires Nancy do to some old fashioned snooping.

Once in France, however, Nancy finds out there’s more than meets the eye, both with Minette and with the moulin. Nancy somehow finds herself in the seat of international espionage, a historical futz-up of epic proportions, several fashion faux pas, a mint shortage, flooded catacombs, and the highly graphic murder of the French Language.

As a mystery, let’s be honest: DAN is a mess. A good ol’ Southern may-yuh-suh. The A-plot (Minette) and the B-plot (Noisette + History) intertwine maybe once on the surface and then basically are separate games, no focus is given to anything so it feels jumbled and messy, there’s not enough to do and too much space to do it in…the list goes on.

The focus is honestly the part that upsets the mystery the most; by the time Nancy’s down in the catacombs for the nth time, Minette is pretty much a distant memory, but when Nancy’s trapped with the stained glass, you’re reminded of Noisette suddenly and rather uncomfortably. There’s no clear mystery — there’s in fact at least two very unclear mysteries — and so there’s no clear story.

Now, let’s get to the players who contribute to the mess.

The Suspects:

Minette — real name Tammy Barnes — is supposedly an up-and-coming fashion designer, but is tackling projects that are more what a seasoned professional would handle (like making a dress for the First Lady). Her fierce rivalry with designer Hugo Butterly feels like a looming spectre overhead, and her timetable has begun slipping more and more since she donned the mask.

Why she, an inexperienced plus-size designer is designing a gown for the First Lady (who in 2005/6 was a small, petite woman), neither I nor anyone else has any ideas.

The real reason Minette’s timetable is a disaster is because remnants of the East German Police – no, stay with me here — are threatening her into making the First Lady’s dress complete with electronic bugs so that they could hear what’s going on at the National Summit.

Minette’s the closest thing we get to a culprit — she’s the one we fight at the end — but she’s also a victim of blackmail and threats herself, and I do find it odd that, unlike in other games, she’s not treated as a victim at all; Nancy never teams up with her, never helps fight her enemies, and is never really sympathetic at all. With Minette’s personality, it’s not a shock that Nancy doesn’t sympathize, but I do find it a little odd that the blackmail thing is just kind of glossed over.

Heather McKay is Minette’s only long-time employee, who vents her frustration with her boss by sending her threatening letters every so often. Absurdly young for her position — Heather is at most 23, given her graduation date from Waverly Academy — Heather also designs her own fashion on the side, hoping that working for Minette will give her the contacts she needs in order to be a successful designer.

Heather’s designs also happen to be hideous — did HER have no one with any fashion sense at all working on this game?

As a culprit, Heather would have been interesting, but unlikely; as the person closest to Minette, she’s already the most suspicious, especially since she could be delaying Minette to make her desperate and then offering to step in and “save the day” with one of her own designs. As it is, Heather ends the game far more successful than she should be, and avoids any taint of having worked with Minette.

Dieter Von Schwesterkrank is the red herring — I mean, the German fashion photographer centered in Paris, and the great-nephew of Noisette Tornade’s Nazi lover, Hans Von Schwesterkrank. Originally dating Minette in order to explore the moulin and find Noisette’s treasure, he found he had somehow developed actual feelings for her by the time she broke the relationship off.

As a culprit, Dieter would have been incredibly dull; he barely has enough personality to fill a teaspoon, he’s the obvious red herring due to him and the conspirators both being German (not to mention the German occupation of France in World War II, where the historical background is set), and he would get nothing out of messing with Minette, as his job does better the more that fashion designers thrive.

Jing-Jing Ling is an Australian (and presumably also part-Chinese, given her name) “plus size” (by this game’s standards; I talk about this later) model who was tricked into a contract with Minette and is Nancy’s roommate during Nancy’s time in France. A chronic liar with an interest in circuitry and engineering, JJ also spends her time baking and eating cookies —yeah, because that’s how a model keeps her size 12 (American size 10) figure, wow — and being easily duped into giving up an autograph via a game of Hangman.

The wet dream of both the catacomb-climber Zu and of Joe Hardy himself, JJ is my preferred culprit if I had to choose just from the cast; outwardly friendly while also outwardly manipulative, with the perfect excuse for going out at all hours of the day and night — Minette is an eccentric, remember — and smarter than she seems. She’s also related to both the “Secrets of Paris” plot (through Zu) and the Minette plot. Her being the culprit would make this an entirely different game, however, and so as the culprit in the current game, she’s an iffy choice at best.

Rounding out our physical suspects is Jean-Michel Traquenard, owner of the easiest to pronounce yet most mangled name of the whole game…and editor of Glam Glam Magazine. He’s also the only Frenchman in our suspects, and one of three probable Frenchmen in the entire cast (Zu and possibly Lynn Manrique, judging by her last name).

As a character, Jean-Michel is unique and memorable; as a culprit, he’s a non-entity. While he could have been more than just a place to see a photo and get a sprig of mint without painting bad replicas of famous paintings for 22 hours, he sits comfortably at Café Kiki, not caring three straws about the havoc happening both in the fashion world and in his city.

There are so many phone characters in this game (most one-off, but still), so I’ll run through them briefly.

Zu is an explorer of the Parisian catacombs, who helps Nancy get down there to explore once she gets him the aforementioned autograph from JJ. He’s fun to talk to, and necessary to the plot, but doesn’t show up quite enough. An interesting twist would have had him be one of the existing cast, but no one quite fits the bill.

Lynn Manrique is a one-off historian who wants to talk to Minette about the moulin and Noisette, but who keeps being blown off. She gives Nancy a bit of info, then promptly disappears again.

Hugo Butterly is another brief phone character, giving about as much information as you’d expect from a hoity-toity fashion designer. His convo with Nancy is mostly to rule him out as a suspect. He would have been a cool option for also being Zu. Ah well.

Prudence Rutherford, in all her glory, shows up as a phone friend here, and is one of the most memorable parts of the game — not shocking, as she was just as enjoyable in Secret of the Scarlet Hand. Here, she’s sent off a request to Minette for a few outfits that of course Nancy has to put together.

Sure, what Prudence wants is an eyesore, but a delightfully Prudence eyesore. Perfect for a woman who’s good friends with P. G. Krolmeister.

Finally, let’s talk a bit about the woman who started part of this game.

Noisette Tornade — literally “hazelnut tornado” in French, which is the oddest name ever – was a member of the French resistance during World War II. Though loyal to France, her boyfriend Hans was loyal to his native Germany, and their relationship resulted in Noisette being seen as a traitor.

Though acquitted, Noisette remained bitter towards those who distrusted her, and hid the treasures of Paris that she had saved for the rest of her life to punish them.

Interestingly enough, when you’re playing this game for the first time, you really do feel like Noisette is supposed to be a sort of tragic hero…but Noisette is not a good person, or a moral person. Even after being exonerated and elected as Director of Public Works for the rest of her life, Noisette is too bitter to restore the art to the country, and refuses to believe she might have acted in the wrong by knowingly and deliberately harboring a Nazi.

Perhaps in early planning stages (and I say planning very, very loosely), Noisette had been executed and was supposed to be a tragic figure who did nothing wrong. But Noisette wasn’t a good person, and any points she might have gotten for saving art disappear when she decided that because she was suspected due to the fact that her boyfriend was a freaking Nazi, the city would pay for it — forever.

The Favorite:

There’s some good stuff in DAN (even if most of it doesn’t come to fruition or feel deserved), and they do deserve to be mentioned.

Jean-Michel is by far the best character that this game has to offer, and he’d still be pretty good in a game that was a bit better. Apart from his painful pronunciation games with Nancy, he’s a lot of fun to talk to and has a great character design. A larger than life character needs a larger than life wardrobe, and Jean-Michel delivers.

My favorite puzzle in the game is the Prudence costume design; while it’s not a hard puzzle and doesn’t really make you feel very accomplished as a puzzler, it is a whole lot of fun and a way to design some of the ugliest outfits known to man.

My favorite moment in the game is anytime Nancy spends time in JJ’s apartment; it’s so well designed and homey without being ugly or kitschy. Baking cookies is prolly the best moment — I wouldn’t call it a puzzle, it’s more like just a task — because it just feels nice and relaxing.

The Un-Favorite:

It’s a small thing, relative to the rest of the things wrong with this game, but I hate that a size 10 (size 12 in France, which converts to an American size 10) is defined as plus-size in this game when in 2006, the year this game was released, a 10 was nowhere near a plus size. It’s a small detail that they very easily could have gotten right, and they didn’t bother to even check.

My least favorite moment in the game is easily the Minette fight that turns into Nancy trapped with Noisette’s artwork. Nothing quite illustrates the fact that they had no idea what story they were telling and no idea how to end the game more than the fact that we go from a slo-mo kung-fu fight to a hall of French artwork and no one’s quite sure which one is supposed to be the climax.

My least favorite puzzle is the catacomb puzzle; while the catacombs are cool to explore, navigating them is a frustrating experience, only made worse by the fear of getting lost – or the rats stealing things that you really, really need.

While most things in DAN bother me to some degree, the game is so uniformly disappointing that not a lot of things stand out over each other, so we’ll move on to where the actual work begins.

The Fix:

This is one of the few games that, in order to have a cohesive plot, storyline, and motivation for all (or even any) of its characters, needs a complete re-write to the setup along with changes to the “plot” progression itself.

The first big problem to fix is the reason Nancy’s there in the first place. It doesn’t make a lot of sense that she’s there to figure out what’s wrong with Minette — she should have a lot of specialized knowledge in order to be an assistant to such a major designer — and the justification is flimsy.

There’s also the problem that our historical characters aren’t heroes, so to try to “exonerate” Noisette when France already cleared her of everything except bitterness is, quite frankly, not a very heroic endeavor. Having this B-plot marginally tied to the A-plot by the fact that the Germans are the bad guys in both really isn’t great either — and certainly isn’t enough justification for the writing to be this bad.

To fix both of these in one fell swoop, shift the story in the past slightly.

Perhaps Noisette and Hans are still involved, but Noisette manages to turn her boyfriend against the Nazis and they spy on behalf of France, including saving France’s art from the hands of the Nazis and hiding it. The French government, however, doesn’t trust either one of them, and executes them for treason against the French state. Noisette and Hans carry the location where they stored the art to their graves, believing it to be unsafe with German sympathizers still around, but leave clues with friends and around the city, wanting it to be found in due time.

Cut to 2006, and Hans’ descendant Dieter Von Schwesterkrank has found evidence that Hans and Noisette were loyal to the French cause and were executed unjustly. The evidence is enough that he believes it (perhaps a work of art or two deemed ‘stolen’ by the pair has turned up in the family, but without any provenance, causing issues of authenticity), having always heard growing up that Hans was working for the French, but he knows that no one else will unless he can dig up more.

He tries to seduce Minette — an actual Frenchwoman in this version — into letting him hang around the windmill where Noisette and Hans once lived. He accidentally falls for her, but she breaks it off due to the external pressure, leaving him both heartbroken and unable to search more.

Having gotten the phone once in the moulin and been subject to one of Prudence Rutherford’s calls, he learns about a hotshot teen detective in America named Nancy Drew who’s worked undercover before and will take any job.

Needing her help, Dieter writes Nancy, telling her that he’s got a job for her and that he’s just trying to figure out how to get her a visa to come to France. Using Heather’s crush on him, he mentions an intern from the States that he’s heard of that can supposedly handle any boss, no matter how obnoxious — and the wheels start spinning.

Once Nancy gets to France and gets the low-down on Minette, she goes to visit Dieter to get her real assignment — to balance working for Minette while finding proof of Hans and Noisette’s innocence.

With those changes in place, the game can proceed relatively unchanged in the order of events, albeit with more importance given to Dieter and less on pointless minigames with Minette. As Nancy tries to find out more about Noisette and Hans, she also notices Minette acting strangely: refusing to talk to people, communicating through emails and instant messages, falling further and further behind.

Zu changes from a wacky one-off character with an obsession to the expert in the catacombs and their use by the French Resistance during WWII; Lynn Manrique from a simple historian to a French Art historian specializing in identifying forged works of art and in art trafficking during the War.

Instead of Noisette’s plotline getting swirled into Minette’s, Minette’s issues are swirled into the larger plotline of proving Noisette and Hans’ innocence through finding the missing artwork and, along with it, the proof that they were working on behalf of France all along.

In the interest of not changing too much, the bad guys can still be fringe German extremists looking to destroy Noisette and Hans’ hard work (or perhaps who have a personal grudge against Hans in particular) and so threaten Minette, but rather than threatening a world summit through a bugged dress, they’ve been stealing fabric, designs, unpicking stitches — whatever they can think of — to delay her collection in the hope that she’ll think that the moulin is cursed and move to a different location, allowing them to search the building top-to-bottom to find the art that they suspect is hidden inside.

I know that this Fix section seems quite long, but it’s all really worldbuilding and premise changes; once a few motivations are shifted and the villains’ objective changes from something that the player doesn’t care about to something that they will care about, the game improves itself rather quickly.

WWII isn’t my preferred time in history to learn about, but even I can acknowledge that passing off the French occupation as “ah those wacky Germans” and “seriously and actively dating an actual Nazi shouldn’t get you suspected as a collaborateur because That’s Mean and if people suspect you just hide French national treasures because that’ll show them” isn’t a great look, nor does it fulfill the “edu” part of “edutainment”.

Ron doesn’t always treat Hermione all that well in Hogwarts. He’s prone to mocking her for her studiousness, belittle her interests and passions, and sometimes acts with a sort of... almost entitled attitude regarding her? This is not his default state with regards to her, but it is a thing he does with some semi regularity.

Now he has reasons for this, stemming from his upbringing, childhood, etc, though none of them excuse them, and they don’t change that Ron is basically a good person and a hero.

But I don’t hold it against Ron in the sense that this is the reason I don’t ship Ron/Hermione (I have seen people do this, however).

After all, I’m a Dramione shipper. Whatever Ron does with regards to her, Draco does worse. And my position has always been - and is - that someone shouldn’t be forever damned for their behavior as a teenager.

And yet, I do have to admit, Ron’s behavior towards Hermione bothers me in a somewhat more... visceral way, shall we say. And that of course, smacks of hypocrisy, and I try my best to not be a hypocrite.

So this takes some unpacking to try to resolve.

Now, I think part of the reason why it bothers me more is something comes up a lot in regards to the Buffy fandom with regards to the way some people regard Xander’s (real, but often exaggerated in the fandom) occasional sexist or chauvanistic behavior and attitudes when compared to multiple the literal murders they will ship Buffy with, or just exist on the show. Some people will regard Xander as worse than these people.

And as others have pointed out, one of the reasons is that Xander’s behavior - even the stuff he actually did - is more... real. No one currently in fandom has ever been murdered. Very few of us have been the victims of attempted murder. And most of us don’t have a close friend or family member who have been murder. Though some have.

By contrast, pretty much every woman ever has had to deal with the kinds of stuff Xander occasionally says and does to the woman in his life, or much worse.

And the same I think, holds true, for many people who read Harry potter and come away more judgey of Ron than of Hermione - they’ve experienced male friends belittling their interests sometimes, even if not with real malice in mind, or acting oddly entitled to them in ways. Or things like that.

By contrast... most women (at least those who are- in the US - white (or equivalent dominant racial/ethnic group in their country) have not really experienced being the victims of racism in the way Hermione is from Draco. Bullied, yes, but not on the grounds of racism.

So again, there’s a certain amount of - for some people who judge Ron harder (not all) there’s a certain amount of Ron’s behavior feeling more... real. More close to home,

The other thing - and this one I think is the one that really does it for me - is that Ron is her friend. It’s one thing when an enemy or rival or someone who you’ve never gotten along with belittles you, bullies you, insults your passions, etc.

But when your friend - someone whose opinion you value, someone who you like, spend a lot of time with, may have feelings for, someone who is close to you - belittles your passions, dismisses your feelings at times, gives you the cold shoulder for months for things outside of your control and treats you (arguably, at times, anyway) as if you’re ‘on hold for him’... that hurts more.

I saw a post recently that discussed this as well - how people who love enemies to lovers ships can dislike friends to lovers ships where one of the friends mistreats (or arguably does, anyway) the other. You view certain behaviors differently when coming from a friend/lover/family member/etc, than from an enemy/rival/someone you’ve never gotten along with/some random person.

Neither of the reasons actually make Ron’s behavior any worse, really, in an object sense. Draco’s racist behavior and bullying attitude towards Hermione is worse, and the version of Draco Malfoy I like and ship with Hermione is as much a character in potentia (that is, who the character could become) as opposed to the character he is.

Ultimately though, neither reason is also why I ship Dramione over Romione, because as I said, one shouldn’t be forever damned for their teenage behavior. But it does explain - to me anyway - why I sideeye Teenage Ron’s poor behavior with regards to Hermione than I do Teenage Draco’s,

On the Subject of Underverse S2

You read that correctly: this is a post about one of the greatest shows ever created, the Undertale animated series Underverse, written/animated by @jakei95. I have a lot of theories that I’ve been pulling together ever since I watched both Underverse and Xtale (the Underverse prequel series). Maybe one or two have no basis in anything, but for some reason they popped into my head and I’ll stick by them until they’re proven incorrect. I will discuss the possibility of a Geno/Ink fight, Fresh!Ink, XI (you’ll definitely want to read their section!), and the fates of many different characters. This is quite the long post, so buckle up for a long ride.

Let’s begin!

GENO/INK FIGHT:

I’m putting this theory first because it is the least important. At some point in time, I somehow got it into my head that there is supposedly going to be a fight between Geno and Ink. I have no idea where I heard about this, and when I searched for any specific videos or posts about the subject, I found nothing. But I personally think a fight scene between Geno and Ink would be pretty cool, so I’m adding this in here.

FRESK!INK’S EXISTANCE:

This is a more relevant theory. Ever since Jakei announced that Fresh!Ink would be a part of Underverse, I have wondered how he would be incorporated. I don’t know if she means for him to be in the future “Beach Episode” or something more serious. (Of course, I know almost nothing about this supposed “Beach Episode”, which is apparently when Epic!Sans will be showing up, so I really wouldn’t know.) But there is an important thing to remember: Ink and Fresh made a deal in the first season.

Ever since I saw this Underverse - Xtra Scene 2, I have wondered what this “prize” could possibly be. What was Ink’s side of the deal? What did he promise Fresh? Hmm... maybe a new body to take over?

Ink’s body doesn’t have a SOUL- that’s basic “Undertale AU Knowledge 101″. What does this have to do in regards to Fresh? To my best knowledge, the actual parasitic creature True!Fresh feeds off the souls of other creatures to survive. In fact, his soul-feeding would kill his victims if he stayed long enough in one body, but he likes to play it safe and leave his victims alive in case he needs to use their body again. But he wouldn’t need to do this with Ink. Because of Ink’s SOULless nature, Fresh could theoretically feed off his body forever. Some might object that since Ink doesn’t have a SOUL, Fresh wouldn’t be able to feed off him. But then how does Fresh!Ink exist?

So, what was their deal? Fresh watches over the Xtale AU while Ink is gone, and after Cross and X!Chara are taken care of, Ink comes back and lets Fresh take over his body for a little while. There may be something else I’m missing, but the pieces seem to make sense.

XI’S PURPOSE:

For those of you who don’t know who XI is, I suggest you watch this video about Jakei’s Overwrite merch. This is when the character of XI was introduced to us, back on good ol’ April 1st, 2019. Haha, yes, the joke character of XI- funny April Fool’s Day video, a good laugh for everyone. Jakei has made a few comics about XI since then, but overall, XI hasn’t been involved in Xtale or Underverse so far. That has never sat right with me, and I’ve always thought there would be something more to him. I was proven absolutely correct when Xtale - The Movie came out. But before we discuss the little extra scene tagged onto the end of that video, I would like to point out some very interesting facts about XI.

On October 6th, 2019, Jakei posted a traditional speedart. Obviously, the art is gorgeous like always and every time I watch it I wonder if I will ever get to the level of skill she is at. But besides that, there is a very important aspect about this video. In the speedart, Jakei drew two pictures: one of X!Chara and X!Frisk fighting, and one of XI. In XI’s picture, they are depicted in full armor with a magical purple sword & shield.

Hmmm... I wonder who this could possible resemble?

Every time XI is shown, whether it be in comics or artwork, their bangs hang over their eyes. Their armor looks exactly like Kris’s from Deltarune. Heck, they both use a sword and a shield! What does this mean? XI is X!Kris. There is no way to deny this. This is why they are X!Chara’s and X!Frisk’s little sibling. I would also like to point out XI’s silver oval locket. I find it interesting how he has a different piece of jewelry from everyone else- all other important characters in Xtale have a matching golden heart locket. Does XI also have people he has given copies of this necklace to? Perhaps X!Susie and X!Ralsei, if they exist? But XI being X!Kris is only the beginning of this theory. Remember how I mentioned Xtale - The Movie earlier? Take a look at this picture.

This is a five-second frame pegged at the very end of the video, after an entry written in wingdings by Mister XGaster himself. The message is as follows:

Entry Number Eleven: As clear as a reflection in a mirror, I have found the most perfect projection of forbidden visions. Get ready. Your time is coming.

Okay, just whoa. Not only is the entry #11, but the person standing there is XI. Oh, and let’s take a closer look at what they’re holding in their hand.

I knew that silver locket was going to be important. There is no way that XI is not going to play a major part in either Underverse S2 or hmm... maybe a spin-off about the Xtale versions of Deltarune characters? To my knowledge, Jakei has not said anything about her plans after she finishes Underverse. She has her Metadora project, and I am aware that her husband @nyxtheshield is planning out his own Undertale series- someone will need to animate that, and I’m sure she would be able and willing to do the job. She has stated that there will be no seasons of Underverse after S2, and the finale will be 1.0. But that doesn’t mean she won’t make a new series. If she does, will it be about all the Deltarune characters? Will the other Xtale characters show up at certain points in it? Will XGaster play a large part in it? There is no way to know, as the idea of a new show is simply drawn from that there may not be enough time in S2 to fully expand what XI is.

In any case, XGaster states in the entry that “your time is coming”. This could either reference a new show or XI’s appearance in Underverse. I find it extremely interesting how XGaster words his message. “The most perfect projection of forbidden visions.” What does that mean exactly? XGaster has seen something in one of his many visions, obviously. The most perfect image of prohibited sights. XI is a person that stands for something that should not be allowed to exist. That makes sense- XGaster, a man, somehow got pregnant and birthed them, as shown in the Overwrite merch video. The “forbidden visions” might imply that he has seen something quite “cursed”, as us modern Internet-users would say. But then he tells this projection to get ready, because their time is coming. XGaster is telling XI to prepare themself. This just proves that XI and XGaster are tied together very closely, and that if XI does get their own series with X!Ralsei and X!Susie, XGaster will be involved.

Whew! That’s a lot of information to take in all at once. This was the big “theory” I wanted to discuss, so now we will move on to the different fates I believe may befall some of our beloved characters.

INK, FOR GOOD OR FOR WORSE?:

Ah, Ink. One of the true protagonists of Underverse. Remember: a protagonist is not necessarily a hero, just one of the leading characters. It has been seen that his story arc is the most important throughout the entire story. He is the one that inspired XGaster. He is the one that made XGaster’s plan succeed. And he very well might be the one to make it fail.

Wait, you’re asking me. I thought he was on XGaster’s side? What do you mean he will make it fail?

I didn’t want to address whether Ink was going to stick with XGaster or flip until a certain song was posted by Nyx two days ago on December 5th, “Soulless Heart”. If you haven’t listened to it yet, go ahead and click that link because the song is beautiful and absolutely necessary to continue on with this theory! The song is the Underverse 0.5 Ending Theme, and guess who it’s about? You guessed it, our good old buddy chum pal Ink. I’ve been listening to it on repeat since it came out, and it really is incredible. (Nyx, if you’re somehow reading this, I would like to personally congratulate you, because not only is the music amazing but mwah! Your voice is a joy, and I would not have any other singer do the vocals.) But the most important thing about the song is the lyrics. Here’s the first verse.

How long have I been longing

to be free and not broken

in this ocean of hollowness?

I don’t want to be forgotten.

Instantly, the lyrics hit you hard. This is about Ink, though, so you can’t expect anything less. Essentially, the song is about the emptiness that Ink feels without a SOUL. This goes along with one of his main aspects in Underverse. The only reason why he worked with XGaster to make sure XGaster’s game worked was so he could feel more emotions. As a chaotic neutral character, Ink literally only cares about himself and his personal goals. But what is interesting about this song is that he addresses the pain he has caused.

Sacrificial lambs

laid upon my path

now are broken worlds

killed by senseless wrath.

Ink knows that he has hurt people. I mean, in the present timeline when 0.5 is to be set, Ink’s actions just caused Error to literally “pull the plug” and destroy all the AUs. (Although, how many AUs were actually destroyed is impossible to determine, because there are still multiple Sanses that will be incorporated into S2 that were residing in their AUs at the time of their supposed destruction.) Ink knows that this is his fault. And now that XGaster has won, Ink will be receiving all those emotions he wanted! In the S2 teaser, which was released on the original Underverse 0.5 release date (the episode was unfortunately delayed due to issues with Nyx’s distributor, RouteNote), shows something very important.

Look at those vials in his hand. Those aren’t just colored vials. Well, they are, but their colors are especially important. Look at their specific colors: orange, yellow, and amber. Previously, Ink’s vials have been seen as very straightforward: roy g biv, that sort of thing.

You have one or maybe two variations, although in this picture there seems to be about four different aqua vials. But there certainly isn’t an amber vial. This goes to show that XGaster followed through on his promise, and Ink has a lot more variations in his color-coded emotion vials. The obvious conclusion from this is that he can feel a lot more things than he thought was possible- including guilt. With his newfound feelings, he could realize that what he did wasn’t just wrong, it was horrible. He might start to blame himself for getting all the AUs destroyed, which in turn might result in a betrayal of XGaster. With his emotions, he would become a real good person. But ultimately, without XGaster’s Overwrite abilities, Ink’s new emotions will fade and he will return to be the same old Ink as before. He will no longer understand why he sacrificed his emotions, and the cycle will start anew. Ink will never be truly happy, because being happy will always mean the suffering of others.

Or, Ink will stick with XGaster. It would be the same fate, after all; if the heroes defeat XGaster, Ink will still lose those emotions. This, though, might leave him feeling bitter and even more willing to do anything to get what he wants, which could potentially lead to him becoming a real villain. Perhaps XGaster isn’t the final boss of Underverse. Maybe the one to start everything will be the one to finish everything.

XGASTER AND UT!GASTER:

This wouldn’t be a real theory post without discussing our favorite fanfiction writer, would it? And yes, XGaster is literally a fanfiction writer. He has symptoms of OCD concerning the world-building of his universe and he just loves to add as much angst as humanly (or monsterly) possible. It just so happens that he lives in his own created universe, so his creations have the pleasurable chance at getting revenge.

Now, there are obviously two ways that Underverse can go: XGaster succeeds, or XGaster fails. This doesn’t necessarily mean that this will be the ending of S2. As I mentioned above, perhaps XGaster will be defeated at the end of 0.9 and 1.0 will be about everyone trying to stop Ink from taking the Overwrite SOUL for his own, I don’t know. In any case, I don’t really have anything to discuss about XGaster specifically, but I am pretty sure I know what his last scene will be if he happens to lose.

It is shown in the Underverse S2 Prologue - Owners that XGaster and UT!Gaster spent a lot of time together in the Void between the events of Xtale and Underverse. Not only do they hold an entire conversation together in Owners, but in Underverse 0.1 when Sans is hit in the head with a ball, he has a vision of the two of them standing together.

In XGaster’s and UT!Gaster’s conversation in Owners, UT!Gaster tells XGaster that he will fail in his quest for perfection. XGaster brushes him off because he’s an egotistical prick, yadda yadda. But this conversation is important because I believe it will parallel the ending of XGaster’s quest. In the end, UT!Gaster will approach his old Void-buddy and tell him to just give up on his pointless venture. XGaster will turn to dust after saying something like, “I will never give up”, and then we have Ink going on a rampage. That’s pretty much all I have to say on them, but I thought it would be worth adding.

DREAM AND NIGHTMARE:

Lastly, we have the brothers. As with XGaster and UT!Gaster, I don’t have much to add with them. But I do believe they will both play a major role in S2. They will be the overseers of the battle to come. Out of all the characters in the Undertale fandom, they are the most omnipotent. They are the protectors of the Tree of Feelings, which is one of three trees to give the Multiverse life. In Underverse 0.4, when X!Chara accused Nightmare of “watching us all this time as if we were part of a show”, Nightmare responded by saying:

Of course, Nightmare mostly means himself, Error, and Ink. Dream is much more active in helping people be happy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t on the same god-tier level as his brother. Dream could sit back and watch the world tick, but he chooses not to because that goes against his morals.

In other words, Dream and Nightmare will probably affect the outcome of Underverse more than any other characters. They’re both pissed about what Error did: all those people that Dream cared about were murdered, and Nightmare can no longer generate negative feelings from innocents. They both have invested interest in this Multiverse war now, and their powers will certainly come to the forefront.

I believe that at the end of the story, the Multiverse will essentially go back to the exact way it was before Xtale was invented. XGaster will be dead, the Xtale characters will be put back in their AU, the other AUs will be restored, and at the end of it all, Dream and Nightmare will be once again pitted against one another. We may even see an alliance between them during Underverse S2 to stop XGaster, but afterwards, they will reestablish their rivalry. Unless the Omega Timeline comes into play, which it very well might, I don’t see the two brothers reconciling.

CONCLUSION:

I will try to do my very best omg

1. Papyrus Look, I know he’s silly and really just nice, but I can’t help him - I love him a lot and I think he provides a lot of really necessary core of heart innocence to the game and I love his role in both routes a lot. He’s just a sweetie! What can I say? Also, special shoutout (or honorable mention, I guess xD) to sans who i failed to fit into the ranking but I love him, too!)

2. Chara ahhh i love them. I do. And i know most people see them as being only evil and if you see them that way, I can’t exactly fault your or call you stupid because I do think that’s a valid reading of the text - but first of all, while Charas morals are...uhhhh bad, I personally do not read them as only evil. and also I think they’re SO interesting. Their existence is a core element to the meta and moreso the entire structure of the game and I love thinking about them.

3. Alphys Oh, Alphys... I used to fucking hate her because she reminded me of some of my own worst qualities (you have my permission to think I’m a horrible person because of that if you want). But now, after some time processing... I think she’s a really complex, realistic and interesting character and for how much I think about her she has more than earned this spot in my ranking

4. Undyne She is objectively awesome! C’mon, the cooking scene? Best scene in the entire game. I love ONE fish lady <3

5. Asgore Why yes I know he is a bad person and has killed children. His moral ineptitude and how he deals with it - as well as the entire dilemma of his position are exactly what I find most interesting about him.

BIG OL’ KORTOPI INFO & HEADCANON DUMP ! ;

( aka the cliffnotes version of all the headcanon legwork i’ve done for this chara in the span of roleplaying him for five years )

BACKSTORY / PRE-CANON :

Kortopi originates from Meteor City, like the original members. The residents discovered him as a very small, clearly premature and sickly infant amidst the piles of garbage they regularly sifted through, not at all an uncommon occurrence, and took him immediately to the caretakers to try and save his life.

While he was able to be saved, it would be years before he would ever reach a “stable” level of health -- he was incredibly sickly and required nearly constant care all throughout his childhood, resulting in his care shifting hands a multitude of times due to the immense time and resources sink that it required. Because of this, Kortopi learned at a very young age to not grow attached to anyone, and that certain people - such as himself - were viewed as disposable by everyone. By the time his health had stabilized in his early teens, he had grown fed up with such suffocating conditions of being under constant care by people who - he thought - didn’t actually care about his life, and would simply pass him over again, and ran away to the fringes of the city to fend for himself.

His life, from that point on, had become purely survival-based, even as his developing brain sought to accrue more knowledge about the world and the people in it. He hid in the shadows, using his small size & adjacent speed and dexterity to rob people blind before they had even realized what was happening, and using his remaining time to people-watch from an assortment of hiding spots, learning about the nature of human interaction, pursuing subjects that interested, and even learning about Nen this way.

Once he had adequately self-trained in Nen and developed his Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand technique accordingly, this newfound ability caused an upset in Meteor City that eventually even reached the elders. Suddenly, people’s possessions were disappearing left and right, as if from thin air, and nobody knew why -- completely unaware that it was Kortopi’s doing, or even that the young boy existed.

Enter the Phantom Troupe. Skilled Nen users themselves, they managed to set up a trap to catch the culprit in the act of using this strange ability, and Kortopi took the bait. While the legs discussed amongst themselves on the matter of killing him or just leaving him be, Chrollo noted that Kortopi was appearing to keep the original objects he stole, and saw in him a thief, just like them, and decided to try and recruit him.

Kortopi was then cornered by the various legs of the Spider, and then approached by the Head. Though he was distrustful at first, Kortopi sensed a level of genuine compassion from Chrollo that he had never seen before in anyone, finding himself trusting in the words he spoke without question, surprising himself. Lulled in by this newfound sense of security and potential ‘belonging’, Kortopi accepted Chrollo’s offer, becoming leg #12 of the Spider.

GENERAL INFO / PERSONALITY :

Kortopi doesn’t know his last name ( or at least, what it would’ve been had he ever reunited with his parents ) or how old he is. As of the events of the Yorknew Arc, he is 19, and when asked, he usually defaults to saying ‘same age as Shizuku’, since he’s aware that their timeline of entering child & adulthood seem to match up almost identically. He’s actually older than her by several months, a fact he’d find amusing if he were to ever find out his exact date of birth.

Due to the troubled nature of his upbringing and the kindness that Chrollo showed him in allowing him into the group, he is fiercely protective of Chrollo and everyone within the Spider, and values their individual lives over the preservation of the group as a whole. This puts him directly in opposition of the group’s main principles and, as a result, of some of the founding members’ beliefs, as can be seen when he sides with Machi and is prepared to fight against Feitan and Phinks during the Chain User hostage dilemma.

The Troupe is the first group of people he’s ever cared for and desires validation and acceptance from, and as a result, he often finds himself at a crossroads -- wanting to be by their sides at all times, yet too shy and afraid of making them upset to ever meaningfully reach out to them himself. Often times, he harbors his affection for them quietly, choosing to watch their group activities from a high perch or sit nearby, observing them. He never outright asks to be included, but very much enjoys when he is, and loves both giving and receiving physical affection.

Outside of the Troupe, Kortopi has a very nihilistic view of people and life as a whole. As was demonstrated to him when he was young and seemingly chronically ill, he believes that people will always seek to cast out the ‘other’ or anyone who causes too much trouble, and therefore feels justified in taking the lives of normal people, knowing they’ll eventually try and do the same to him. People outside of the Troupe are meaningless to him, and he will generally take their acts of kindness towards him as superficial no matter how good their intentions.

Kortopi, like most members of the Troupe and most akin to Chrollo, does not fear death whatsoever. Having been on the edge of death countless times from both illness and the harshness of lone survival, he has an acute awareness that his time is limited, especially in the context of the Spider’s rule of new members being inducted by the killing of a current member. Because of this, he has no qualms doing things that may end in his death, or taking risks that may seem unwise. The future doesn’t exist to him - there is only the ‘now’.

His Spider tattoo is located between his shoulderblades, obscured by his long hair. He keeps his hair long both to obscure his tattoo and his face, keeping his identity hidden through both of these avenues. However, he’s not particularly self-conscious about his face ( as people often assume ) and he will often keep his hair behind his ears while he’s alone, eating, or around the Troupe in a private location. The appearance of his face isn’t a secret amongst anyone who knows him -- it’s rather average-looking, only made minorly off-putting by how large his eyes are, but otherwise nothing special.

INTER-TROUPE RELATIONSHIPS :

Chrollo is the first true figure of authority that Kortopi’s ever had in his life, and he regards him with immense respect and devotion, unable to be swayed from this by anything. He feels honored to be a part of his plans, and is always eager to show off his abilities and prowess to the leader, hoping to be praised. 10/10, would love headpats from Danchou at all times.

Shizuku, Bonolenov and Shalnark are who he would consider his closest friends within the Troupe. These are the three he is most consistently able to overcome his shyness towards, and he can often be seen by their sides, a friendly presence that is always willing to listen to them and assist them in any way he can.

Machi and Pakunoda are both very calming presences to Kortopi, and he’ll often sit watching them read, sew or do other mundane activities, basking in their innate kindness and acceptance of him.

He desires to grow closer to Feitan, who he sees as someone similar to himself, but concedes to respectfully give him the space that he needs. He takes particular interest in observing his actions and attempting to analyze him past his cold and emotionless demeanor, and will jump at the chance to accompany him places or spend time with him in any capacity, hoping to see him open up with any luck and patient persistence.

Phinks, Nobunaga, Uvogin, and Franklin are all members with prickly outer demeanors and hair-trigger tempers, he’s found, but he’s witnessed them all to show care and affection to those they care about, and he finds them interesting to watch, often making a fun activity out of trying to predict their actions amongst Shal, Bono and Fei. He also feels gratitude whenever they show kindness to him, often reciprocating the gesture himself and taking amusement from their embarrassed reactions.

Hisoka and Omokage give him a strong sense of unpredictability, contrasting with the rest of the Troupe’s firm resolves. He trusts them, as an extension of his trust in Chrollo, but finds their actions and demeanors mysterious, often interrogating them with curious questions to quell his own interest.

Kalluto also gives him a sense that he may have hidden intentions, but this feeling is passed over in favor of feeling sympathetic to the young Zoldyck’s plight, as the only child in a group of highly skilled adults. Kortopi often tries to give him tips for navigating the Troupe, acting as a friendly big brother-type.

MISC. INFO :

He enjoys intellectual board games and is quite good at them, only being bested within the Troupe a small handful of times, usually by Chrollo. He is humble about this, and has no problem with stopping to explain any rules or mechanisms about the game should his opponent need such a thing.

In terms of sexuality, Kortopi is gay, but very, VERY demi and equally as shy. Even if he catches feelings, it takes a small eternity for him to be brave enough to distinguish them as such, and another one to actually act on them. Also, his chances of catching feelings outside the Troupe are pretty close to zero. Like, probably about %0.0001. Don’t count on him looking your way at all if you’re an outsider.

His vocal chords are damaged, resulting in a deep, scratchy voice that tends to give people a fright when they first hear it. As a result, he can’t raise his voice very much, and avoids doing so unless absolutely necessary. It doesn’t hurt, but it results in a small fit of dry coughing that he finds unpleasant.

The skin of his hands and feet are permanently colored a more pink-purple hue due to poor blood circulation throughout his entire body -- the rest of his skin is otherwise normal.

The Villain I Appear To Be

So, after seeing a fan art floating around my dash of Chara from @lostmypotatoes Wild West AU singing 'Why Don't You Do Right?' to Papyrus after the Jolene Incident, and after a brief conversation with potato, I felt... inspired.

So I wrote a thing based on that. It's based on Frisk's feelings after the whole hoopla with Jolene goes down but before Chara finds it in her to get back on stage and sing out her heartache.

My writing may be a little rusty since it's been a while since I last wrote something and it was done in just a few hours, but it has a lot of heart put into it.

I hope you enjoy it nevertheless.

A hush fell over the saloon as the owner stepped up onto the platform stage and moved towards the microphone. Grillby cleared his throat, a hint of nervousness in his tone as he made the announcement.

“Due to issues of… health, Miss Chara will not be performing tonight…”

A small round of boos came from the crowd, but one stern look from the fire monster silenced them as quickly as they had come. Others in the audience whispered amongst each other with concern, wondering what horrible malady the sweet show girl had caught.

Grillby knew exactly what kind of illness it was that poor Chara had contracted, the worst one of them all – heartbreak. He had seen everything. Jolene entering the saloon. Papyrus passing her completely to oogle at Jolene. Chara holding onto a parchment with a tightened grip, tears beading at the corners of her eyes… But Grillby wasn’t one to pry into others’ business. He simply told Chara she didn’t look well and sent her home to recover without ever letting the girl know he was aware of what had transpired.

“In her place, Miss Frisk will be performing solo for the night. Please give a warm round of applause for her.”

The seated crowd did as asked of them. Some of the more ornery and drunk men gave a few hoots, hollers and wolf whistles in the lady’s direction as the curtain rose to reveal her place on stage.

Frisk stepped front and center before the microphone, a tight smile on her lips.

It was fake.

Sans frowned in his seat, seeing through her disguise. Was she shy performing without Chara by her side? She had sung before without her, but her voice had fallen to a soft delicate whisper during those times, barely audible, but oh so enchanting to his senses even if he doesn’t understand the words to her song. Almost as if she were whispering her secrets for him to keep and guard.

…Or perhaps that belief was a product of his own lovesick fantasies.

Regardless, the sheriff knew he was in for a treat tonight. Chara was a wonderful person and a talented songstress; he could understand why his brother had taken an interest in her and he felt great sympathy for her catching ill, but whenever she was up on stage with her sister, Sans felt as though Frisk didn’t get much an opportunity to shine.

Then again, Miss Frisk had enough suitors to worry about as is, even when she clearly wore a veil as she mourned her dear departed husband, who Sans had only recently learned never existed. Apparently she wore it to throw off her more troublesome suitors. It warmed his SOUL to its core that Frisk would share something so confidential with him – he wasn’t even upset that she had essentially been untruthful towards him as well this entire time! He understood. Having that kind of unwanted attention coming from all angles from the town’s men would grate on any lady’s nerves in a relatively short amount of time.

A quiet clearing of her throat brought his attention out of his thoughts and to the woman who had captured his SOUL.

“Sometimes when I

Wanna run away and hide

When there's no one on my side

And all my pride had disappeared”

Her voice was as faint as it always was when she sang without Chara’s accompaniment. Frisk’s tone was somber. Even her eyes held a glint of sadness in them. She was sad – how could she perform as if nothing were wrong when her dear little sister was currently crying her heart out into her bed’s mattress?

Chara had returned to their temporary dwelling strangely quiet the previous night. It was obvious from the air of gloom surrounding her that something was terribly wrong. When she raised her head to meet Frisk’s eyes, that’s when the dam burst. She wailed, gripping onto her sister’s shoulders as she tearfully explained what had happened at the saloon – that scum Papyrus, sending a letter asking for her to meet him in the star fields that night, only to ditch her for that little tart, Jolene.

Chara cried herself to sleep last night, and that was the last thing Frisk heard before she fell asleep herself. She had climbed into her bed and they slept together in each others arms like they did when they were little girls.

That’s what Papyrus had done to her sister – he had reduced her to a sobbing little girl. And each time Frisk dwelled on this fact for too long in the past twenty-four hours, it made her blood begin to boil all over again.

“I take it off my mind

And leave it all behind

Nothin' left to do but

Try to take the leap and follow through…”

She had warned Chara about that playboy. More than once. But even so, she was far more angry with Papyrus than her.

Chara had already learned her lesson.

But Papyrus?

He still needed to be educated on what happens when you make fools out of the Dreemurr sisters…

“And that's exactly what I'll do…!”

She craned her neck towards where he was sitting in the crowd, her lips curving upwards wickedly with a predatory gleam in her eyes.

“I know to you I don't seem very strong

But I assure you before you can find me I'm gone

So come on and catch me you've still got a chance...”

Her voice began to crescendo, aweing the crowd and illiciting a few hushed whispers. Sans let out a soft gasp, one hand clutched over his SOUL, his eyelights morphing into hearts. Papyrus, however, felt a cold chill go down his spine that he couldn’t shake off for some reason…

Grillby turned towards Frisk from his place behind the counter with a slightly raised eyebrow, but she only gave him a smile feigning innocence. The instrumental picked up, and Frisk turned her gaze back on the crowd, specifically Papyrus, her SOUL pumping with DETERMINATION.

“But not for long

I'll be rollin' place to place

Won't stop till I win the race

Although I may have crossed the line”

Sans watched, spellbound, as Frisk danced across the stage, oblivious to the dramatic change of mood between her and his brother present. He was far too distracted by the cadence of her voice to notice. Papyrus couldn’t place why, but he felt like a small defenseless rabbit in front of a powerful lioness while subjected to her fierce gaze.

The lyrics to the song she was singing weren’t helping either.

“No time to waste on you

I don't plan on slowing

Down, no I'll keep on going

Even if you think I'm in the wrong”

Papyrus’s deception and Chara’s heartbreak had brought Frisk back on track. She remembered why the both of them came to this town in the first place.

She had allowed herself to become distracted by the the sheriff, and because of that, her mind had been swept away from their objective. Perhaps if she had remained focused on their goal, she could have prevented her sister and that cad from ever getting as close as they had been. Then maybe Chara would be up here on stage singing with her instead of wrapped up in her bedsheets sniffling.

“Just know that

Although I may not think everything through

I don't take back what I say or regret what I do

I know that some stay in line and they stick to the plan

But if you leave it to me I'll do whatever I can”

She was the head of the operation, the brains, the planmaker. And Chara was the one who followed those plans to the letter and helped them come to fruitation. She was her darling little sister, her best friend, and her eternal partner in crime.

By toying with Chara’s emotions, he had not only made Chara his enemy, but Frisk as well. Then again, she and him were never friends, but now Papyrus has made himself a powerful enemy with a personal vendetta compared to a few nights ago where Frisk previously considered leaving him unscathed at Chara’s request when they finally did raid the town of its gold.

“'cause

I know that's what I'm here for

I don't wanna wait around anymore

Even if you can't see

The good inside me

I don't have the time to tell you

Why I do the things that I do

Just please hold on and soon you'll see

That I'm not the villain I appear to be”

She and Chara had done their share of heists before, but Frisk had been in this business longer than Chara. Her sissy wasn’t nowhere near as innocent as most of the town’s population thought she was, but she was still a saint compared to herself.

That’s why Frisk always insisted on doing the dirty work during their jobs most of the time – even if Chara had no qualms on doing it herself, Frisk didn’t want to stain her sister’s hands with more blood than necessary, metaphorically speaking or otherwise.

Because deep down, no matter what, she wanted the best for her sweet little Chara. Even when they pickpocketed and stole, what they took, Frisk always kept in mind how their spoils could benefit Chara first, herself second.

Chara had been her entire world since she first entered it.

“Movin' along, no I won't settle down

Until I'm locked behind bars or I'm kicked outta town

So you can keep on a runnin' around and around

But you will never quite catch up to me!”

Frisk put her everything into her song and dance routine. Her singing had never been quite as powerful as it was this night, her kicks had more force put into them some members of the crowd realized - Frisk was imagining knocking the teeth of the monster that broke her Chara’s heart right out of his skull.

Focusing on this song was quite literally the only thing on the face of this Earth that was keeping Frisk from leaping off the stage and onto the table where he sat to beat Papyrus within an inch of his life in front of every patron in the saloon at the moment. If she poured her aggression out into her routine, she could hold off on carrying out her violent desires.

“And I know you think I'm crazy

But I hope that maybe

Now you'll see why…”

And yet, every time Frisk caught eyes with him in the crowd, her anger rose exponentially. In an effort to calm herself, she switched from maintaining eye contact with Papyrus to looking at the other members of the audience. She didn’t allow her gaze to remain on Sans for too long whenever it fell on him, however.

He had his elbows propped on the table, his hands pressed against his cheeks flushed blue, his heart-shaped eyelights never once tearing away from her focused on her every move – every step she made, every breath she took, he didn’t want to miss a single second.

If Frisk had witnessed this a few days ago, she might have blushed.

But not now.

Those moments between them, when she felt a warmth creep onto her face and her heart and SOUL flutter because of him… She buried them in the very back of her mind, where they were soon to be discarded.

No more silly distractions.

No more tender feelings to take either of them away from their shared ambition.

“We came to this gold infested town with a job to do and I intend to finish it…” Frisk thought, clenching her fists and belting out the last line of her song.

“I had to tryyyyyyyy…!”

A lull of silence followed the song’s end, then suddenly, the entire saloon erupted into a raucous round of applause. Grillby was beginning to become concerned that his furniture would be damaged in the excitement, but the crowd managed to compose itself before it ever came to that.

The sole person in the establishment that hadn’t moved a muscle was Papyrus, who had been locked into his current position early into Frisk’s performance. Nobody picked up on his discomfort though, everyone assuming that he too had been taken aback and bewitched by the lovely Miss Frisk’s unexpectedly powerful voice.

He finally moved to take a swig of his drink, the beverage sloshing about when he tried to bring the mug to his mouth with his quivering hand. When he finally got a mouthful, he swallowed hard.

“WASN’T SHE AMAZING, PAPYRUS?!” Sans shouted, his eyes shifting to stars as he rigorously shook Papyrus’s shoulder in his enthusiasm. “I NEVER KNEW MISS FRISK COULD SING LIKE THAT!”

“y-yeah. i didn’t k-know either…” Papyrus stuttered, his knees weak and feeling as though he would collapse if he were to stand up.

“PAPYRUS, YOU BETTER NOT BE THINKING ABOUT STEALING AWAY MISS FRISK FOR YOURSELF, MISTER!” Sans warned with a frown and a sharp jab to the sternum, mistaking his brother’s apprehension for attraction. “IF YOU DO, I’LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU! SHE HAS ENOUGH UNSEEMLY SUITORS TO DEAL WITH FOR THE MOMENT, AND YOU ALREADY HAVE MISS CHARA! BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE AND DON’T! BE! GREEDY!”

“y-yeah. c-chara, you’re right again, bro.” He then slowly pushed himself into a standing position and took a few wobbly steps towards the saloon’s counter.

“that was the most terrifying three minutes and thirteen seconds of my entire life…” Papyrus thought as he downed his entire glass, hoping the alcohol would soothe his frazzled nerves after that performance.

Though he wasn’t aware as to why yet, Papyrus knew that Frisk was upset with him for some reason – more than usual. She continued to glare at him with a heated gaze throughout her song and dance number, almost accusingly.

And the lyrics – Papyrus had thought since he first met her that Frisk seemed suspicious, but Sans would hear none of it. It surprised him that someone like Chara, sweet and innocent as a lamb, was related to someone so unsavory. Some of the men around town had been taken in by her, but Papyrus had unknowingly just witnessed her revealing her true colors to him.

Disguised as an incredibly catchy musical number, Frisk’s song had been a subtle declaration of war against the entire town.

And her shared gazes with him throughout were a stern warning – cross either of us again and you’ll pay for it dearly.

“M-MISS FRISK! PLEASE WAIT!”

Once Grillby dismissed her for the night, Sans attempted to flag her down to compliment her performance and maybe a chat, he hoped. However, Frisk didn’t turn around when he called out to her, didn’t even slow down as she headed out the door.

“IS SOMETHING WRONG?” Sans asked worriedly when he caught up to her, a concerned Papyrus trailing after him not too far behind, but far enough.

She continued to ignore him, her pace quickening just slightly.

Knowing she didn’t want to be bothered at the moment, Sans should have gave up then and turned in for the night to seek answers when Frisk was in a better mood, but his curiousity, confusion and feelings of hurt won out over his common sense.

“FRISK. PLEASE TALK TO ME.” He nearly pleaded when her steps grew even more hurried. “SOMETHING’S OBVIOUSLY WRONG. DON’T KEEP YOUR EMOTIONS BOTTLED UP WHEN TALKING ABOUT IT MIGHT MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER. PAPYRUS DOES THAT AND I HATE IT… SO PLEASE…”

“There’s nothing to say.” She retorted, not slowing down in the slightest.

“DON’T LIE TO ME.” He shot back, rushing in front of Frisk to block her path. “TELL ME THE TRUTH! I’M NOT MOVING UNTIL YOU TELL ME WHAT’S BOTHERING YOU!”

Frisk kept her head down, not meeting his gaze which matched her own while she had been on stage staring down Papyrus. She bit her lip, almost hard enough to draw blood, but Sans then took her face in his hands and gently coaxed her lower lip free, stroking over the abused skin with his thumb.

“FRISK…” He pulled her face closer to his until the tip of her nose nearly touched his nasal ridge, his eyes imploring.

She looked down at their feet and mumbled something, but Sans was quick to tilt her chin upward to regain eye contact.

“FRISK…?” He repeated, his tone filled with concern as his thumbs traced patterns over her cheeks.

“We shouldn’t see each other anymore.”

His movements immediately ceased.

“…What?” Sans asked, his voice dropping to a broken whisper.

“We shouldn’t see each other anymore.” She said again, her tone more firm and her gaze sharp as she pried herself away from him and his touch, taking a step back.

“You… you don’t really mean that…” His voice cracked at the end as he gave a wobbly smile. “If this is a joke, this is a really mean one to pull, Frisk… I might just take you seriously.”

“No. You should take me seriously.” She asserted, glaring at him with the very same intensity and hatred that she had towards his lying cheating brother. “It’s not a joke and I most certainly did mean it.”

“But… why?” Tears began to bead in the corners of his eyesockets. “W-Was it something I said or did…? If it was, I’ll never do it again! I promise-”

“No. It’s nothing you’ve done… nothing you’ve done at all.”

“Then that’s it, isn’t it?! It’s something I haven’t done that I was supposed to, right?!” Sans was nearly sobbing now as he tried to reason with a Frisk consumed by thoughts of revenge. “If that’s it, then just tell me! Tell me what to do! I-I’ll do anything for you, just… please don’t do this…”

“There’s nothing you can do. Nothing at all.”

Her tone was cold, so cold…

“We shouldn’t see each other anymore.”

Sans hiccuped once, then twice before falling to his knees, his hands clutching at his chest where inside his ribcage his SOUL was aching and crying out in agony. He let out a heartbroken wail before the sound of his quiet sobs were the only noise heard on the empty streets of the town.

Frisk didn’t spare him a second glance and continued her walk home without another word to spare for him.

Papyrus looked down at his brother, and his own SOUL told him that he should stay and comfort him in his time of need…

But Frisk wasn’t the only one with a penchant for taking revenge.

“hey.”

He said once he had significantly caught up to her and was far away enough from Sans that he couldn’t hear. Frisk didn’t stop but that didn’t matter to him – he could walk and talk at the same time.

“i know you seem to have a bone to pick with me…” That was the understatement of the century there, “but why’d you say all that stuff to my bro? sans didn’t do anything to tick you off, and he definitely didn’t deserve whatever that was back there.”

“…”

“so? don’t you have anything to say for yourself?”

Frisk suddenly spun on her heel and was standing before him in an instant. Papyrus froze in his tracks, for directly in front of him was the barrel of a revolver, and its owner’s finger was hovering dangerously over the trigger.

“One false move and I’ll shoot you down. I mean it.”

“d-do i need to raise my hands up, or…?” He brought himself to ask, his arms already half raised before she answered him.

“No. Keep them down. Seeing your hands raised up like that makes you look kind of creepy. Like you’re about to do something… untoward.”

He briefly considered raising his arms again just for that comment, but her thumping the business end of her revolver against his sternum quickly told him that testing Frisk’s rapidly waning patience was a bad idea.

“Listen, I’m in a hurry, and I’m sure you are too.” The silver of her revolver glinted in the moonlight. “So you had better leave me alone from here on out.”

“that doesn’t explain why you treated my brother the way you did!” Papyrus pushed his wariness of the weapon in front of him aside, the image of Sans slumped on his knees as he cried on the cold hard ground burned in his eyesockets. “why…? i know you never liked me, but… i thought you at least liked him. no, i know you did… so… what’s changed?”

A bitter smile slipped onto her lips as she all but spat out, “Now you will know of the joy of comforting a sibling who’s SOUL aches with heartbreak, of the restless nights that will be spent holding them in your arms as they bawl like a small child…”

“what are you talking about?! that doesn’t explain anythi-”

The end of the revolver slamming against his chin and forcing his mouth shut silenced him.

“C h a r a…” Frisk hissed. “You… you hurt her. And it’s taking every fiber of my willpower, every ounce of my DETERMINATION… not to end your life right here and now.”

“what did i ever do to chara?” He questioned incredulously.

“You really don’t know?! Is your skull that vacant of rational thought?!” She growled, her pointer finger lightly stroking the cool metal surface of the trigger.

“all i know about chara right now is that she’s supposed to be sick and from the sound of things, it’s supposed to somehow be my fault.”

“And it is your fault.” She said punctuated by a swift nod.

“y-you’re crazy! how could her falling ill be any fault of mine?!”

“How? Does the name ‘Jolene’ ring any bells?”

“jolene? What does she have to do with-”

“But I forget how ignorant you actually are, so maybe this will jog your memory.”

Frisk thrust a crumpled parchment at his chest. Papyrus cautiously unfurled the piece of paper and his SOUL stilled.

My Chara,

You performed wonderfully as always. Let’s escape to the star fields tonight. Wait for me there.

He slowly raised his head to meet Frisk’s scornful expression. He opened his mouth but no words would come out.

“s-she… she never showed up last night.” He feebly tried to argue, but Frisk silenced him with another upward thrust of her revolver.

“Because she saw you with that cheap little tramp, Jolene!” She interrupted, then went on with a poor impersonation of the two, “‘Do you have any plans for tonight? None, I hope.’ ‘well you’re in luck then, i’m free for the rest of the night.'”

“…” Papyrus was rendered speechless once again.

“She told me everything, so don’t you even dare try to pin any blame on her!”

Frisk took a deep breath, the hand holding the revolver slowly lowering. “It’s getting late… Now, I believe we both have a distraught sibling to tend to for the night, wouldn’t you agree Mister Papyrus Gaster?”

Her voice had shifted to a faux sugary sweet tone, but he could still hear the underlying venom there. Papyrus heard her footsteps grow more faint, but he made no move to pursue her any further. It was only the thought that Sans was probably still bawling in the empty road behind him that brought Papyrus to his feet. As he gathered his brother’s weak and trembling form in his arms, all he was left wondering was,

“what have i done…?”
