OH YES DUDE oh i Loved that post because it brings up actually something that for some reason i haven't seen discussed much. oliver's unreliable narration.

i have a brilliant, i think, genius four-question plan for making people understand saltburn, and it has worked before and i will maybe elaborate on it, but not right now. right now i'll talk about one of the questions.

who is oliver telling this story to, and why?

we've established that he's an unreliable narrator at least because it's the logical conclusion for a movie shot in a way that opens and closes with his narrative. but what does oliver being untruthful actually mean for what we know about anything and everything that happened. have you ever obsessed over this particular question. well. i have.

my hot take, first of all, is that oliver is not that smart. he's clever, but the point of the movie is that he's caught up in and driven by desire; desire, pointedly, in the moment, merging desire, adapting to circumstance and leading him on. his want is not concrete from the beginning. his want is insatiable hunger that grows.

so, okay, from the top. the whole meet-cute with felix? because of a punctured tire? eh. idk if that's true. the money thing at the bar, pretending to not have any while he actually did? eh, perhaps. chronologically he then lies to felix about his dad, and this is big, this is deliberate, this is what ties felix to him for good.

what if the first two instances were coincidences? like, felix genuinely in trouble then, oliver genuinely out of cash. makes sense to become attached and actually do something, something impulsive, drastic, when felix seems to be drifting away, and lie about his dad.

interjection: you might be saying, nadia, he lied about his family from the get-go. well of course. i didn't say he's not smart enough to clock what image of a damsel in distress felix would gobble up. i'm saying he didn't do it for the long game, because there was no long game to speak of, as narrator-oliver would have you believe. i think he wanted felix so badly in that moment of several months in oxford, i think he was so blinded that he would've said anything. and he did.

now, i've briefly talked about oliver's feelings about the invitation to saltburn, and i think this is very important here. in the moment, he couldn't possibly know what exactly this invitation could mean, in the long run, only that it is definitely the next step in progression of desire for felix. present-day oliver interjection, and i believed him, after felix said he could leave anytime, i read as a slip up, an admission that oliver didn't plan shit, or at least from the beginning he didn't. it lured him in as soon as he got there, gothic house driving mad-style. he held on to a dream of something elusive (felix as a friend? lover? forever-partner in whatever capacity? i want him so bad i don't care what he is as long as he's there? please? please?).

the other obvious hole to poke at is in the end. venetia very conveniently takes the razors he places for her, and while sure, it could be read as him just hinting at how he conveniently read her fragile state and took advantage of it, i don't buy it. (i'm honestly even tempted to suggest he met elspeth on accident, to then spin a pretty story for his own sake, but him keeping tabs on the surviving cattons all those years tracks with what we know about obsessive oliver; he's definitely known about her flat for a while.)

but those are all minor stuff. i get completely if you think i'm reading too much into it and this is all just a headcanon after all, to be fair. BUT. but.

my second big take is that oliver was/is madly in love with felix. i know, shocking. but you have probably seen people say he wasn't. i will elaborate.

i wasn't in love with him. i loved him. i hated him. what does this sound like. have you ever had a friend come to you after a breakup fuming and telling you how they'll never end up with this asshole for sure and then get back together with him and then break up and say the same thing again.

i loved him, but i wasn't in love with him. i know everyone thought i was, but i wasn't. have you never told anyone something of the sort, specifically the last part, to emphasize just how it's everyone around you that's kinda hung up on whatever it is, and you've moved way past it, actually. have you never told yourself that.

i have. i know many other people who have, too. so, who is oliver telling this story to, and why? there's no one but dead elspeth in front of him. there's no one but himself. fun fact: each time you recall an event, it distorts under the influence of the mix of past and present emotions. each time you recall, you mold memory (source, e.g., x). the way i personally see it, oliver, for whatever reason, retells the story in order to solidify his own memory of it in the way that he wants to remember it. whatever he says, this is his final word, and this is his final truth.

this is also why details slip through, like my beloved i believed him, like the emotional i hated him growing into self-convincing, misleadingly dismissive, definitely unsure i hated him by the end. those are the true emotions that he recalls, those are the times that are hard to rewrite, for whatever reason.

of course, he hated them all. but before that, he loved felix to the point of blindly following where felix's desire led oliver, at least the way oliver perceived felix's desire. it failed, crucially, when felix's desire brought them to the center of the labyrinth, where oliver could not be the desired anymore.

my third hot take in connection to this is that oliver did not know he would kill felix until the very night he did it. he didn't know it, i think, until the last hour, until felix refused to reconcile completely, until he made his blood run cold. i also briefly mention it here, specifically how farleigh is tragically connected to felix's death, in my opinion. this tracks with, again, my strong belief that oliver lies, lies and lies throughout this whole story about wanting to take everything from felix from the beginning; no, he fucking didn't. he wanted felix. he wanted felix to be his. that was number one priority. he wanted felix and whatever else came with it, undoubtedly, but not the other way around.

paradoxically, he also wanted to be felix; he wanted to be him and be with him just as us tumblr people can often relate and the tragedy is that you always have to choose. felix pushed him away, so there was no other choice but to take what was left of felix that oliver could take. hence the clothes wearing, the table scene talk, the refusal to leave.

felix chose not to choose oliver, so oliver became felix. it's his fault. felix promised oliver could leave. felix left instead. what was oliver to do.

but to your point about the books, i think it could be either way, actually. i think he could have lied about it because technically that's also in character for him, he was performing for an audience of his tutor. but i also think that he was, genuinely, a nerd before he came to oxford, and he didn't, and still doesn't, have any friends, and he hates his sisters and his mother and is miserable. he's the perfect profile of someone who'd read king james' bible over the summer, and then some, imma be honest.

so, yes. i think oliver lies about most things in saltburn and i think he's pathetic, lost, confused, grieving, angry, horny, down bad and in denial. and i fucking love him. i so fuckin do.

More weirdly specific König Headcanons

He can hide how drunk he is pretty well, doesn't really start slurring his words and can hold deep conversations, the gig is over as soon as he stands up tho. He starts swaying pretty badly and has walked into more than one lamppost while intoxicated. Has apologized to every lamppost so far much to the amusement of everyone watching.

He isn't very religious but if someone starts praying the rosary in German his autopilot kicks in and he joins in. Same with certain church songs.

Started smoking at age 16 (don't worry, that was the legal age for smoking until like 5 years ago, then the gov changed it to 18) and regularly tries to quit. Nowadays he mostly smokes when stressed or drunk.

Tries to make everyone on his team say "Oachkatzlschwoaf" (means tail of a squirrel in an austrian dialect), refuses to tell anyone the English meaning bc he can't pronounce the word squirrel.

He's kinda choosy about the water he drinks. Water quality in austria is really good, so you can drink the tap water in the whole country. So when he's somewhere where the water is "technically" drinkable, but has a chlorine taste he prefers drinking bottled water.

Every new years eve at midnight he listens to the blue danube waltz, as is tradition in Austria.

There's a pocket in his tac vest that's reserved for Manner Schnitten. The people that saw something pink sticking out of his vest and made fun of him for it never get offered any when he opens a pack.

Last man standing is the winner.

So the other worst part of canon was the demonization and eventual murder of Manchester Black at J'onn's hands in the same season that saw James cozying up to the Children of Liberty (WHY) and the Superfriends insisting that killing them (the neo-Nazi analogues), even to prevent them from killing their marginalized alien targets, was Wrong and Bad.

(Crisis on Earth-X was pretty bad, too. Not sure how it didn't occur to any of the higher-ups that putting their heroes in Nazi uniforms in order to make them ~Cool Villains~ was maybe kind of a super fucking antisemitic thing to do.)

I was sorely tempted to just answer this with "el problema es el racismo," but thinking on it further that is technically the worst part of fandom, whereas fanon is generally understood to mean (a) post-colonial Marxist philosopher Frantz Fanon or (b) fan-constructed canon, i.e. headcanons that have become popular and widely accepted by many people in a fandom (sometimes to the point where people mistakenly believe that these headcanons are canon). I've already talked about my problems with the "Kara is a genius"/"Krypton is Advanced™ and Earth is Primitive™" take, as well as the "Lena never really cared about James" take; other popular fanon ideas I can't stand include "Clark is an asshole" (no >:( I like Clark), "J'onn is Alex and Kara's space dad" (citation needed), and "Eliza Danvers is the best mom ever" (when, lest we forget, Alex's whole Deal is a direct result of her Not being the best mom ever lol). Um...there's probably more but to be honest I'm blanking on what they would be.

Hm, well, I could talk about general fanfic tropes I don't get but I prefer to stay fandom-specific in order to maximize damage from my biting and maiming. So I'll just expand on what I commented on your earlier post: I don't understand the appeal of the trope where Kara shows Lena Disney movies or imparts upon her the True Meaning of Christmas and thus transforms her life from one of forever sadness to one of joyful bliss. I'm not saying I don't like fics where Kara's presence in Lena's life improves her life -- ideally, I would imagine that both of them improve each other's lives. But the specific trope of "OMG, Lena had an abnormally wealthy and abusive childhood and thus has never done [normative thing for American (Christian) children to do that there is no canon evidence she hasn't done and also that is not necessary for healthy childhood psychological development], we must rectify this immediately!!!" baffles me.

He had just gotten finished with his monthly nail painting schedule with Asmo, and his hands looked absolutely fresh and pampered. You never really took notice of how strong yet delicate his hands looked. They were usually slathered in sauce for you to notice.

“Honey, have you ever tried a ring on before? Your hands are gorgeous”

Beel felt his heart flutter—a dumb smile forming on his face. He loved the idea of keeping something that made him feel like he was connected to you. Despite that, you both knew a ring with a gem on top would just look like a bedazzled onion ring to him.

Because of this, he decided to practice with some ring pops. Not even a whole day had passed, he had already eaten 6 pieces. The poor guy was really trying though. He wanted to have a legitimate matching ring with you that could last long, so he did.

This baby had practiced for so long that once he got the hang of not eating something for once, he immediately went out to buy some for the both of you.

You were in the kitchen preparing some food for Beel when he suddenly burst through the entrance wearing a huge smile on his face. He excitedly plopped down on one of the stools and extended his hand. On it laid a small box with a little bow on top. You opened it to find a ring in the shape of a spatula, kinda like SpongeBob’s. You were obviously confused and he said he wanted something he can remember you by, lifting his hand to show you his.

“I know it’s hard for me not to eat something like this, but I’ll really try! I want you to know that no matter what I eat, you’ll always be my one and only little chef <3.”

He made sure never to try and eat his despite it being so tempting. When he’s had a rough day, he’ll look at his ring and start getting back to his happy ol self—knowing he’ll get to see and hold you at the end of the day.

Belphegor

The both of you decided to have a picnic date underneath the stars in the planetarium. Despite his usual sleepy demeanor, he was excitedly pointing at each constellation he could find. He spoke about how each constellation had a story to tell, not of those you and other humans know from mythology and instead about how they told the story of the three realms. This obviously sparked your interest and asked plenty of questions…for the first part.

It’s not that you got bored or anything, it’s just that his finger looked so soft and supple. He continued, failing to notice your silence and just rationalizing it as you appreciating the stories. He was about to tell you more until you wordlessly took his hand in yours and admired it? He couldn’t really tell.

“Ya know, we should try putting a ring on this. Your finger would look great with one, Baby”

A small tint of pink would dust his cheeks with his signature grin. He looked at you with fondness while his mind spun with the different rings that could express his undying love for you. After a few hours, you both decided to call it a night and get back to your rooms before you get caught by Lucifer.

On your next date though, you were surprised to see Belphie pulling a box out of his pocket. You felt as if your heart was about to beat out of your chest, thinking he was about to propose or something. He noticed your panicked face and reassured you it wasn’t the case. He opened it to reveal a beautiful Little Dipper ring with tiny gemstones connecting to form the constellation. He placed it on your finger and it slipped in perfectly.

“You might not know this, but the Big Dipper and Little Dipper are said to represent how vast and endless one’s love and connection are. We were separated by two worlds but I know that no matter what lifetime or form we take, you are the one for me, my Little Dipper.”

”Does this mean I can call you Big D.”

He makes sure to always wear his, even when he goes to sleep at night. Whenever he’s out and the stars are nowhere to be seen, he looks down at his finger and knows that there’s always one star that shines through the dark and empty sky.

5 What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

...yeah, this is just because of that scene in The Puppet Show, sorry. But I do think it's kind of arc-appropriate that Buffy's Shadow Self Cordelia sings a song about not wanting to live in anybody's shadow and then (eventually) leaves town.

12 What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Not exactly original to me but I think I am increasingly an ace Cordy truther. 

I know there are other explanations for some of the way she’s written in Buffy and that, in the high school years in particular, the writers really don’t seem to like to suggest that any of the women on the show might have any interest in sex as such (which is probably the real reason Xander spends more time talking about how physically attractive Willow’s boyfriend Oz is than Willow herself ever manages, tempting as it is to think of that as deliberate bisexual Xander / lesbian Willow foreshadowing).  

But Cordelia especially seems particularly confused (and occasionally actively repulsed) by the mere idea of sexual desire (“does looking at guns really make girls want to have sex?” she asks Xander in Innocence, while surrounded by guns herself, “That’s scary.”; “I get it!” she announces while Faith is talking to Buffy about the side-effects of Slaying, before quickly clarifying “Not the horny thing.  Yuck.”) despite the show also being clear that Cordelia has definitely had sex (among other things, there’s the story she tells about “a friend, not me” who had sex in her car and “kicked the gearshift”  in the health class in Bad Eggs). The general impression is, I feel, pretty striking (but, yeah, absolutely unintentional).

20 Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

In canon I really like Cordelia’s emergent friendship with Angel. No offense meant to the Cangel shippers, I just don’t really see the appeal of their relationship being romantic (and, for other reasons, I don't like the seasons where it's suggested that it might be, so it's not a take I'm normally exposed to much).  I said in a recent post that Angel doesn’t really exist in Buffy except as Buffy’s boyfriend (sometimes Cordelia or Faith might express some interest in him, but they are very clearly only doing so because he is Buffy’s boyfriend).  So it’s nice that Angel gets to be something more like a real person in his own show, and to form relationships with people that don’t have anything to do with Buffy anymore.  

(I know that many people on here like to suggest that Buffy and Cordelia would have remained friends after Cordelia left Sunnydale, but canon doesn’t really support that at all and I don’t think I see it either – I think post-high school Buffy and Cordelia would both see each other as representative of an old life they’re trying to move beyond and probably not make any effort to stay in touch -- it's noteworthty that when either of them talk about each other post-Graduation Day, which almost never happens, they do so fairly dismissively.)

Beyond canon, I think Anya and Cordelia would have gotten on well and I think it’s a shame (and slightly hard to explain in any in-universe way) that they never interact after The Wish.  Surely Cordelia is (from Anya’s perspective) the whole reason Anya is a human!  From her perspective, she’s the first person in a thousand years whose wish she was unable to grant, and trying to do so cost her her powers.  The only reason Anya can have for not being slightly obsessed about her is the fact she knows Cordelia is going to be written out of the show soon.  And equally Cordelia, post-Lovers Walk, is very clearly badly in need of a friend: that's why she starts talking to and hanging out with Anya in the first place!  And yet, after The Wish, nothing.  Feels like a wasted opportunity.

Tim we know is into like new wave post-punk. Joy Division, Devo, ect. Idk I don't listen to him when he talks. Going more into head canon realm I would also include like new wave gothic. The cure, siouxsie and the banshees, like 70-90's type alt. Huge music snob.

durge fic writing process thoughts: guilt versus shame

Write whatever you want! Headcanon your best life! And, I noticed a pattern in how I think about durge's character arc, especially because I'm currently writing an evil-to-the-end durge. No one asked for this (though asks are open!) but here it is, some rambling on how my durge(s) feeling guilt vs shame for their urges impacts whether they choose violence / stay evil.

I have a *lot* of oc durges. I'm writing Solace (they/them wood elf rogue / fighter) because they're the only one who fully pursues Gortash pre- and post-tadpole and I want to write durgetash rn. But in my weird personal multiverse of durges, the ones who were self-satisfied and confident pre-tadpole are the ones who become more "good" post-tadpole. The durges who were the most troubled pre-tadpole are more likely to do evil things, or at least be morally flexible.

Why? For me, a durge who experienced some kind of self-confidence, fulfillment, and/or pleasure during their time as a Bhaalist murder baby enters tadpole life with a seed of self-acceptance. Though they can't remember why, their amnesiac self has some preexisting inclination to like themselves for who they are and have more trust in their own judgment. They experience their urges for a second first time with enough security in themselves to reject them. They feel guilty, but they don't think this is who they are. (The internal conflict at this point is accepting their villainous past, which will be differently fun to write if I ever do it).

But a durge who moved through their Chosen of Bhaal phase with fear, insecurity, and/or low self-worth enters tadpole life with vestiges of self-loathing. Their broken brain leaned into traumatic rewiring, and when they re-encounter their urges they're predisposed towards self-hate and identify with the urges instead of challenging or rejecting them. Being Bad makes more intuitive sense to them than being, idk, Good with a Serious Problem. Something is wrong with them. They feel shame.

But without their memories, they don't really know why. Depending on party composition they can get praised and rewarded for the things they feel ashamed of. And in time, they realize they don't have to feel shame - after all, it's their reaction. They can react differently. If they stop fighting their "true nature" they can finally enjoy themselves. They'll even get rewarded for it and more or less have what they need to survive. (There's a whole other point of analysis here on companion interactions and community vs isolation, I can write that at some point if we're into it).

Ultimately, my post-tadpole self-loathing villain-arc durge is tempted not just by the urges, but by not feeling bad about themselves. Without their memories of who they were and why they should feel ashamed of that, they have the freedom to indulge in their worst traits. It might look like self-acceptance, but it's not. They just stopped caring about anything and followed the dopamine. And the more they give in to their "true self," the more inevitable it seems to them that their only path towards meaning and worth is through Bhaal. (At least it makes Solace go perfectly with Gortash. Misery doesn't love company so much as it hates being alone).

I guess this feels worth saying because I've seen nuanced discussion about durge's capacity for redemption, but the evil arc for durge seems mostly like them leaning into misc Bhaalist insanity and/or being very comfortable in their evil. I'm curious about (and enjoying) writing an evil durge that's less unhinged and is experiencing more relatable emotional arcs, even when we can't relate to their stabbing. Hopefully.

Okay WTF Happened at Brendon?

Just how much Turlough hated Brendon School is something of a running gag in both the show and eu media. It's usually part of a larger Turlough Hates Earth running gag, but that school seems to stand out. Of course he'd hate the planet he was exiled to, to some extant, especially the place he was exiled to, but I get a sense that returning to Brendon is somehow his Worst Nightmare, to the point that when he contacts Trion authorities to save the people of Sarn, expecting to be rearrested, he says that he doesn't care what happens to him as long as he isn't sent back to Brendon. This implies that he considers Brendon a potential fate worse than death.

It's always played as a joke, but it feels like Turlough's hatred of Brendon goes beyond his hatred of exile in general. I've been picking up on whatever hints are dropped as to why that might be.

Mawdryn Undead Novelization: Brendon School clearly sucks. The headmaster doesn't come across as particularly mean, but he's kind of an idiot who probably shouldn't be in charge of a school. I'm guessing this is a sort of satire of English public schools in general.

(Note how is priorities are 1. Sports 2. What I think is some kind of military thing 3. Academics)

So, the place generally sucks and probably isn't very good as a school in terms of actually educating children. Turlough is generally presented as non-athletic, not liking rugby or cricket (unless he's watching the Doctor play apparently), which probably put him on the bad side of the headmaster and the school as a whole.

Planet of Fire Novelization:

Both the serials and novelizations of Mawdryn Undead and Planet of Fire were written by the same person, so the portrayal of Brendon and Turlough's attitude towards it are consistent. When Turlough talks about Brendon being the worst place in the universe, we can actually see into his head a little:

So, more of what we get in Mawdryn Undead, really. Brendon sucks in a pretty mundane, stupid way. It makes sense that Turlough would hate the place, but not really fear it. Perhaps Turlough's hatred of Brendon wasn't supposed to come across as passionate as it did when multiple people wrote about it. Turlough is prone to melodrama, after all.

Enlightenment Novelization:

Enlightenment doesn't discuss Brendon in any detail, but I think some of Turlough's mindset is telling. There's a lot of emphasis on being bullied.

In this scene, Turlough is in an all-male environment with a shared sleeping quarters with bunks, a similar vibe to a boarding school. His initial fear of the sailors might come from seeing them as similar to potential bullies at school.

When making The Choice, Turlough is tempted by the potential wealth the diamond could bring making people not bully him.

So maybe it was about bullying. When we see Turlough at Brendon, we see him as the bully. He's a dick to Ibbotson AKA Hippo. But, a lot of bullies are bullied themselves. Ibbotson might be the only boy considered to be a bigger loser than him.

My headcanon from this would that Turlough, being not very strong, not an athlete, and also a literal space alien, so probably also a weirdo, was bullied at Brendon and it got bad. But the adults didn't do anything to stop it. They probably thought it would build character or that it was Turlough's own fault for not trying hard enough to fit in. So, he was left to fend for himself completely. While also being in a generally miserable environment. And an exile. Who fought in a war. And his mom died. He wasn't exactly okay to begin with.

This post will have a sequel discussing the references to Brendon in novels and short stories that I have screenshots of, since some writers felt the need to go into more detail about this stuff, but I'm not really sure if they should count or not.

Oh, don't you know? Hisashi is going to be a clone of All For One, allowing him to return once again because that's a Star Wars reference... On second thought, knowing my track record, I really shouldn't be tempting fate like that.

Joking aside, while I do have a lot of thoughts on the death of All For One, one of the things I'm happy for is that this fan theory is seems to be finally petering out. Because All For One is pretty definitively dead, beaten by two characters he's had a fairly strong connection to. What would even be the point of revealing him as Izuku's father now? Who's even left that could give that reveal and have it be satisfying? Even now, there isn't any solid mention or hint that it could be the case. If anything, showing the entire span of All For One's life and getting into his head, both in his flashback and as we see him physically regress, we have even fewer pieces of hard evidence. Young All For One doesn't look at all like Midoriya and unless it was a part of some grander scheme, I can't imagine All For One would ever have any kind of family given his goals and personality. And because of that sociopathy, I can't imagine you can draw that much emotion out of the dynamic or have Izuku be that conflicted about the situation. To paraphrase a wise man, he's crazy and he needs to go down.

Especially now since the story seems pretty dead set on the Tomura being Izuku's final boss and emphasizing their connection. Which is something I never considered before now, but seems so obvious now. I keep hearing people comparing this to Luke and Vader, but it really isn't one to one. The reason why the Darth Vader plot twist works so well is because he was Luke's villain, one he had a close tie to through the movies. What's more is that the matter of Luke's real parents was something important to him and was brought up a few times before the twist. So having Vader, the Luke he hates, the man Luke believes killed his father, the man Luke will need to defeat to bring peace to the galaxy is really his father. And then there's is new dynamic where the two are using their bond to pull one towards their own side, believing their own way to be the right one. None those are the case with Izuku and All For One. The theory made some sense if All For One returned as the big bad, but now it would just like seem like a pointless swerve for all the characters involved. Having All For One be his father is like finding out Palpatine is his dad the whole time. It just doesn't work as well inherently.

something this character is truly proud of.

i mean, this isn't headcanon, but truly his seat on the convocation of fourteen? and not just any seat, arguably the most important seat. i think that and everything that requires of him, is something he puts great pride in. i feel like, had events played out differently, he would have considered it his life's greatest work. in a more personal headcanon that again, isn't really strictly a headcanon, is the way he was able to help wol throughout the great arc of his life. elidibus appreciates and always strove toward balance, and he seems to genuinely believe he accomplished that at the end. or near enough to it that it all mattered.

2. who they want to please the most. 

i think at his core elidibus was a people pleaser. not in a pushover sort of way, but in a very driven to do as right by as many people as possible through his work. in a pre-sundered world i think the way he went about that is rather obvious, as emissary. but even in his life as an ascian, i think the driving force behind his madness was the belief that he was doing right by his people, reaching for what would amount to gratitude for recovering all those lost souls, even if that may not have been the name he put on it.

3. who depends on them. 

in the world unsundered, literally everyone. his was a heavy burden, especially for one as relatively young as he was, even if he carried it proudly and with joy. every act, every word, every choice was part of that grave responsibility. that only deepened post zodiark summoning, and it focused down to pinpoint obsession after the sundering, obviously. every act of evil he took was born of love for the world lost, and i truly believe he thought all of humanity was depending on him.

4. what they would do if they had one month to live.

oh, fuck off.

pre-sundering he strikes me as a very 'set his affairs in order' type. doing what he could to make sure that no one was burdened after he was gone. to make the transition to his absence as easy as possible on those who cared for him. meticulous notes and directions and thoughts stored in memory crystals so that anyone who came after him could pick up and carry on where he left off.

and then? take something for himself. his was literally the seat of sacrifice, and i think he held himself back from anything that could have been seen as too indulgent. find a way to find peace with his fate, and some way to enjoy love before his time was up.

as an ascian, he does not have the wherewithal to even consider that he might not survive. even after lahabrea and emet-selch perished, defeat was never a possibility in his mind. his plan was to succeed. i think at the point of shb patches that sort of foreknowledge would have destroyed what was left of him.

maybe, though, given some sort of clarity, he'd have spared a moment of thought for unukalhai, who we know cared for him and misses him after he is gone.

13. what kind of parent they would be.

i love the way you really had to stick the screws in here.

compassionate. some part of his ascian self saved a child from the annihilation of a whole world. whatever his plans were, he took responsibility for this life and saw to his care and survival. there was room within his madness to choose this child. so, perhaps his own flesh and blood in a different life would have enjoyed utter devotion, patience, and effusive love. it would have reinforced the belief in the work that he did for the star.

i don't think about this ever at all, you see. i don't think about what an ascian--crazed and driven and so lost in his own tunnel vision-- would do faced with a child he did not know existed. i don't ever get tempted to go absolutely unhinged and write an au where this happens. not ever. there is no elidibun in the oven and we're probably all grateful for that.

Hi! I wondered if I might ask, what makes you ship shadamy? I've seen your posts about why you don't ship sonamy, but none about why you do ship shadamy. I'm sure that you already have a post or two on the subject. I just haven't found it/them yet. I would love it if you could leave a link to them for me. I would honestly appreciate it! PS: I loved your Halloween shadamy head cannons.

To be honest, no one’s ever straight-up asked, which was always fine with me; I have trouble narrowing things like this down. It’s tempting to just give up and vaguely gesture at the whole blog, but I think I can do better than just that. For those who want a quick answer, the most concise explanation is probably this post about how they’d resolve arguments. More details can be found under the cut. It’s a long post, though.

I was about Amy’s age when I first played Sonic Adventure 2. I saw a sweet, cute girl accidentally latch onto a supposedly “evil” guy...who surprisingly made no effort to push her away, instead responding with a smirk in his first moment of true gentleness. And I was immediately smitten. As the game continued, Shadow fascinated me, and I felt real pain at seeing Amy cast aside and ignored by her friends. And then someone finally listened to her, finally valued her input, and it was the same conflicted, complex guy as before. She had such an effect on him that she moved him to tears and inspired him to save the world in a moving sacrifice. It was the most powerful moment I’d ever seen in a Sonic game.

Over the years, my love for these two never waned. I found myself wondering time and time again why they never interacted. It may have been what sparked my strong preference for the Serious Character X Sunshine Character trope, with a hint of Bad Boy X Good Girl to boot.

As I grew older, my thoughts on romance matured along with me, and it really struck me just how perfect these two are for each other. I can finally put it into words.

They’re compelling partly because of their similarities. To me, Shadow and Amy are the most passionate characters in this franchise. They are dedicated enough not just to be heroic, but they’ll reach the point of anger in their desire to protect their loved ones. They’re the first to stand up when others are mistreated, and they’d do so for each other in a heartbeat. Shadow does this for Amy in Headcanon #284, and Amy does the same for him in Headcanon #223. They’re also steadfast and stubborn enough to stand up to each other when one of them goes too far, even in situations where other characters would back down. Both of them *need* someone that stubborn in their lives.

It’s because they’re on the same level that they’d connect so well. I’m passionate myself, so I know from experience that it’s validating and wonderful when your partner matches and appreciates your efforts and feels just as strongly as you about injustice. Amy in particular has been told many times to calm down, but he’d never say that to her. Headcanon #64 demonstrates this well. She could recognize and appreciate his own personal brand of dedication. Headcanon #76 proves how. Most people wouldn’t think of Shadow as a particularly romantic person, but she’s open-minded and sees romance everywhere. She’d be touched by his efforts.

Their differences would compliment each other extremely well, too. Shadow’s lost a lot and can be overly protective of his loved ones, while Amy can be unusually clingy. Is that not a perfect combination? Headcanon #90 goes into this.

Shadow and Amy’s connection stands out because they don’t interact in the same way with anyone else. Amy can always get through to Shadow on a level no one else can match. He’s already weak to her, even with their limited screentime together. She steers him in the right direction. Following her always puts him on the right path, one that leads to his own fulfillment. Her effect on him is deep and impactful. He’s feared by humans and mostly left alone, but here’s this girl who always unfailingly believes in him and seeks him out. In Sonic Battle, she gets legitimately angry at Rouge for not telling her where Shadow is.

How many characters make such a point of reaching out to him? The fact that they know so little about each other only makes this stand out more.

He tends to be nicer to her than he is with other characters, too. After he helps Amy rescue Cream in Cryptic Castle in Shadow the Hedgehog, he warns her to be careful, a surprisingly soft statement coming from him in a game where he’s at his “edgiest.” Headcanon #273 and Headcanon #249 explore how I think this could extend to their relationship.

For Amy’s part, there’s only one person she treats like she treats Shadow.

And it’s Sonic. Of course it’s Sonic. Her “beloved.”

See that interaction up there where she interrogates someone because she’s so desperate to find Shadow? Who else does she do that with?

See how she looks at Shadow at the end of ShTH?

Does that look familiar? It should.

Everything Amy loves about Sonic is something Shadow has, too. Courage. Heroism. Selflessness. Shadow’s got it.

The only difference? Shadow isn’t afraid of commitment. Sonic’s evasiveness has consistently been a source of frustration, even pain, for Amy. Meanwhile, Shadow is a steady, fiercely loyal, committed man who’d appreciate a solid relationship. He already has a steady job, and with all the hell and turmoil he’s been through, I can’t help but feel he’d be happiest with something real and stable with someone who’s always, always had faith in him. The guy could use some consistency in his life, and helping and protecting ordinary people is what he’s built for and makes him happy. He’d love to come home to her at the end of the day. Headcanon #174 details this well.

It’s clear from Sonic Battle that Amy wants kids someday, and Shadow’s good with kids. Not only did he help to rescue Cream in ShTH, but Charmy thinks he’s great and sees him as a role model. It’s a rare gift to effortlessly get a kid to think you’re cool and worth looking up to. Sonic can do this, too, but it’s more in an older brother/mentor kind of way. That’s very different from being a dad. You have to be very present to be a parent, something I personally feel Shadow would be better at. Sonic may be an exciting person, but I think as Amy gets older, she’ll find she’s much happier in the arms of someone who wants to be there and values consistency the way she does, and when she figures that out, her dark hero will be waiting for her. Headcanon #188 and Headcanon #224 force her to really think about this.

So...yeah. There are so many things only they can do for each other that I really can’t put them with anyone else, so many levels they’d connect on.

Past that...my earlier headcanons were far simpler than the giant stories I churn out now. I think they got across my reasoning more effectively. I’ve recently given all my headcanons a proper tag, so anyone who wants to read them in chronological order can do so with this link.

Moonie's Pokemon Platinum + PLA Replaying Adventures: Part 2

Something I missed in my PLA playthrough is the charm shop in Jubilife and the very obvious Arceus shrine. I'm suddenly realizing very few places of worship of Arceus actually depicts it's true form as a pokemon, just the emblem of its crest. Noticeably the Tempting Charm also features its crest, but I am unsure why in terms of lore. (That being said, the pokemon world's version of dudes wearing a cross chain necklace are Arceus' crests, apparently)

In terms of the actual shrine itself, it's very small with the stone crest seeing better days. (My best guess is it's gold plated?? I would assume the blotches of colour on the stone is rust, but it looks way too yellow) Typical offerings are placed there, but I noticed that the flower in the vase offering is what appears to be a white Easter lily, which is a common flower depicted in Christianity. Might just be a generic flower choice, but I thought that was a fun coincidence.

The Solaceon Ruins are likely one of the biggest differences between games, mostly due to it's layout. In D/P/Pt the ruins were placed in the game mostly as a puzzle for the player to obtain the HM fly, but given HMs don't exist yet, the whole thing was removed (likely for game design reasons rather than lore ones however).

The main entrance and unown hieroglyphics are the same however, so I like to headcanon that the ruin's main entrance was only constructed during pre-Hisui times (given the Greeco-Roman architecture surrounding it) but the ruins may have been modified or excavated post-Hisui times. Given the size and scale of Solaceon Ruins in Platinum, it is likely that by the time of modern Sinnoh, some archaeologists and historians likely found hidden rooms only after the events of PLA.

I mentioned this before in another post of mine, but Volo is the only character (that I'm aware of so far) that does not let you refuse a battle with him. (That being said, none of the bosses/trainers in any pokemon game have been ever "optional", but I digress.) When given yes/no responses to other characters when prompting a battle, you are usually given the option to refuse (say if you want to save or switch up your team.) I found out that the Rei/Akari battle doesn't let you exit the cutscene when you respond no, but it still in some way pauses before initializing the battle. Volo's battles straight up ignore this and start the battle right away. All in all pretty good foreshadowing to how later in the game he responds "not that you have a choice..."
