Tom riddle never wanted to be the father of that child and he was within his absolute right to abandon merope, which is why I dont understand the fics where him and tom jr develop a father and son relationship, his healing doesnt have to involve being a father imo. I think the best scenario for tom riddle sr is one where he never interacts again with either of them ever again, and ofc one where his son doesnt kill him.

My opinion about Harry Potter Ships (2/2)
Wolfstar (Sirius Black/Remus Lupin): Beautiful. Just beautiful. They're THE Marauders Era couple. 😆
Remadora (Remus Lupin/Nymphadora Tonks): I have to see the development in a canon couple to like it- and in the movie they were suddenly like "We're a couple now :D". So no, not my ship. 😕
Jilly (James Potter/Lily Evans): Why not. After all, they both did bad things. "But Severus also did bad things" Yeah, he did. But James bullying him was also bad. So was Lily laughing when his "best friend" was being sexually assaulted.
Snilly (Severus Snape/Lily Evans): Before their bond broke they were good friends so I'm okay with it. Although sometimes I think they both deserve someone else.
Sirily (Sirius Black/Lily Evans): I didn't know the existence of this ship until now- but you know- it's nice. I like it.
Regulily (Regulus Black/Lily Evans): Wouldn't they also be called something like Starflower? Even the name of the ship is nice.
Remily (Remus Lupin/Lily Evans): I will only say the ship name ✨Moonflower✨ is beautiful as well as the ship.
Rosekiller (Barty Crouch Jr./Evan Rosier): Fics made me ship them 😅
Bartylus (Barty Crouch Jr./Regulus Black): The fics also made me ship them ngl
Moonwater (Remus Lupin/Regulus Black): I prefer Sirius with Remus/Severus/James and Regulus with Barty but they're okay 🌸
Jegulus (James Potter/Regulus Black): I know it's popular, but I'm neutral about it. I don't hate it, neither I love it. I like some fics of them tho.
Jeverus (James Potter/Severus Snape): I LOVE IT! But just because I read fics where James changes before bullying gets too far and Severus turns into a Death Eater. And fics with them having a healthy relationship. If they were toxic in the fics I wouldn't like it.
Snirius (Sirius Black/Severus Snape): They're kinda like Jeverus and they are Slytherin/Gryffindor. I will only say that.
Reverus (Regulus Black/Severus Snape): Ooooh they're cute 💖
Snucius (Lucius Malfoy/Severus Snape): Two Slytherins? One of them is a brunette and the other is blond? I LOVE IT.
Arthucius (Lucius Malfoy/Arthur Weasley): Dron 2.0 but in the previous generation. 👌
Wolfdragon (Lucius Malfoy/Remus Lupin): I don't know what made me ship them, but I love this ship ❤️
Stardragon (Lucius Malfoy/Sirius Black): They're- kinda interesting 🧐
Lucissa (Lucius Malfoy/Narcissa Malfoy): They're literally the best "partners in crime" relationship of Harry Potter.
Jamcissa (James Potter/Narcissa Malfoy): If the ship is between a Malfoy/Black and a Potter, I'm in 😉
Jucius (Lucius Malfoy/James Potter): I think the same thing as I said in the previous ship 🎶🎶
Prongsfoot (Sirius Black/James Potter): Two Gryffindors? Friends to lovers? Gay wizards? Yesyesyesyes-
Moonbucks (James Potter/Remus Lupin): It's similar to Prongsfoot so yes 👌
Narlily (Narcissa Malfoy/Lily Evans): The fanarts made me ship them ⭐⭐
Bellamort (Tom Riddle | Voldemort/Bellatrix Lestrange): I have the feeling they would be toxic so no. The only way I could accept it is if they were both sane enough to have a healthy relationship.
Belladolphus (Rodolphus Lestrange/Bellatrix Lestrange): Yes. they have to be together. Although I only like them if they're not toxic.
Quirrelmort (Tom Riddle | Voldemort/Quirinus Quirrell): I mean they could be a good couple if both of them (again) were sane enough to have a healthy relationship. Unless we're talking about AVPM- which would be a big YES.
Snarry (Severus Snape/Harry Potter): Nope. I see Severus as his father figure and nothing else.
Tomarry (Tom Riddle | Voldemort/Harry Potter): I headcanon them as platonic soulmates. Besides I ship Tom with Abraxas and Harry with Draco 🤣
Bellamione (Bellatrix Lestrange/Hermione Granger): For me they're like the previous two ships. They would just have a platonic relationship.

Five Sentence Ficlet Friday on a Saturday, let's goooo~
Hermione Granger/Tom Marvolo Riddle Jr., please! I remember wanting to prompt this for FSFF only to realize those weren't happening anymore, but now they're back! I'm so happy, I really adore your five-sentence ficlets, they're so lovely and fun and you know how to make each word count. You paint such darling images in so few words~💗
Mayhaps something to do with Hermione becoming his Dark Lady/first meetings and him becoming intrigued with her right away~
Could take place during canon-ish timelines—which would be interesting to see how such a development as this would change the game/other people's reactions~
I hope that isn't too detailed, and of course you can go in another direction if you please, these are simply suggestions~😊
Miss Hermione Granger has lines she won't cross, countless lines, each for a different situation, each bearing potentially atrocious consequences, for everything except one instance; Hermione will do anything at all to keep Lord Harry Potter safe.
Lord Voldemort watches her with slit, scarlet pupils, wickedly amused, and hisses, "What brings Potter's pet New Blood to my side?"
Hermione smiles up at him, a sharp, bitter, twisted smile, and states, "I Transmuted my magical core into a philosopher's stone; if you bond with me, you will never die.
Avaricious greed paints his pale features as he hisses, "And what is the price for your consent, Miss Granger?"
Hermione earns her Gryffindor Sorting for the thousandth time by fearlessly meeting his gaze and demanding, "Harry lives."

Who is your favorite character who you do not write?

mun questions // @spynorth
Who is your favorite character who you do not write?
Tom Marvelo Riddle Jr/Lord Voldemort: I wrote him forever ago (which is ironically how I was introduced to your piraticaltwit blog since you were friends with Ruth at the time). I really enjoy the HP world in general and think the Death Eaters have a lot of potential so far as developing backstories and larger narratives go. But I would have to do a lot of reworking from what I originally had going on with him. It's not out of the realm though. If Rosemary ever picks up Bellatrix Lestrange/my writing buds lead a resurgence in the community it'll be game over for you bitches. Also my url was mortalgod which I still think slaps.
Favorite character you have rped?
answered here. But I'll add that Dean Winchester is quickly becoming a beloved muse for me. He's somehow a Mean Girl and a himbo and I love him dearly. Just...not the actual fandom he is from lmao

The Twelve are the most famous heroes in the history of the world, led by none other than Horcrux himself. For years they've kept the world safe. They've never known defeat or experienced the sting of self-doubt, and Remus Lupin, along with many others, views them as a group of living gods. You can only imagine his excitement when Greyback himself chooses him to replace him.
Remus is thrust into a world of abundance and power, manipulation and heartbreak, and he realises navigating it will be the hardest thing he's ever done. Barely twenty-four, and one of the most famous people in the world. It's hard enough before a raven-haired scoundrel knocks him out a window and makes him question everything he's ever believed.
This is a 'The Boys' inspired story, a graphic show with many brutalities. Keep that in mind, please. I started this story once before but lost the whole Gmail, so here I go again. Enjoy!

the lestranges knew about the prophecy
they didnt know all the details, but they knew there was a spoken threat
and they were led to believe it was the longbottoms
they were tom’s failsafe. it’s why they go after the longbottoms when voldemort disappears
because the potters are dead, and it CANNOT be a child that took out voldemort
there had to have been a bigger plan
there had to have been more to it
alice and frank didn’t even know
they had less information than the potters
and they were tortured for it
tortured because they didn’t have the answers
tortured until they had no answers left to offer in their place

PART 1. The house of gaunt: A look into Tom riddles herritage and family background.
The Gaunt family was a pureblood family whose bloodline descended from Salazar Slytherin, who discovered the house known for its striking green colour, Slytherin. The Gaunt family is well-known for being a very old family, but it is also well-known for being violent and cruel. This family not only acted on their violent tendencies but also on incest, as most pureblood families do. We understand, as do other pureblood families, why it became so common, as the obsession with keeping their blood pure and free of any taint that could harm the family and the reputation of being a well-known pureblood family.
But there was one difference as to why the gaunts were obsessed with keeping the linage clean, and that was the gift that had been passed down for many generations and which Tom Riddle would inherit. that being parseltongue.
The effects of incest within the house of gaunt would continue to worsen, and by the time the twentieth century arrived, that generation, the Mavorlo riddle family, would all have some sort of psychiatric problem. Mavarolo was known to be violent and emotionally unpredictable, and Tom Riddle's mother was unable to perform magic due to her emotional distress as a result of Mavarolo riddle's outburst and abuse, leading her father Mavarolo to suspect her of being a squib.
Merope riddle was most likely a woman who wanted someone to love her, and when she saw a handsome muggle man like Tom riddle senior, she instantly knew she wanted him to be that person, and she would develop an unhealthy love for him being obsessive, I don't think Merope could grasp what love truly was her self, as she wasn't able to recognise her love was more of an obsession rather than pure love.
While her father and brother were both imprisoned, Merope would act on her obsessive love for Tom Riddle Senior, bewitching him with Amortentia, a powerful love potion known to affect those who drink it, causing them to become obsessive and infatuated.
Merope knew it was wrong, but she wanted to get away from her family and be loved by a man like Tom Riddle Senior. Merope would take advantage of Tom Riddle Senior by marrying him and having sexual intercourse with him, which resulted in her becoming pregnant with Tom Riddle Jr, who would later become the notorious Lord Voldemort.
Merope would undo the effects on Tom Riddle Senior after becoming pregnant, believing that after all that time, he would truly love her without the potion. Merope, on the other hand, did not get her desired dream. Instead, Tom riddle Senior, who was shocked and rightly disgusted by what Merope had done to him. Tom riddle senior would flee, leaving Merope alone and without anyone to love her.
Merope later gave birth to Tom Riddle Jr., but died shortly afterwards, leaving him an orphan.
When comparing Tom Riddle and his mother, they are quite similar in that they do not understand love in a healthy way, despite the fact that Merope appears to feel love, unlike her son. She can't understand her toxic love; she doesn't have a pure ideal love like an average person does, so she becomes overwhelmed with it, causing her to confuse obsession with love and harm those she wishes would love her back. Merope, like Tom, did not grow up in a healthy environment where they could learn socially acceptable morals and values in life, which caused Merope and her son to lack an understanding of love because they both had no one to show them, love.
@aldhidbah (I hope you don't mind that I tagged you, but you seemed to express an interest in reading my analysis, so here it is!)

Severus Snape is a poor boy who grew up in an abusive home. At the age of 9 he meets his best friend and future partner in crime Lily Evans. During their teen years they meet a group of boys who call themselves the Marauders. At the age of 16 Severus commits his first murder by killing his father with the help of Lily. Tobias's death was labeled a heart attack and from there Severus's life of crime began with Lily at his side.

Everyone is born with a specific mark that pertains to their soulmate. The mark itself takes form into whatever creature is to be their soulmates favorite and it is to turn into their favorite color once you both touch. It was because of this that led to Severus's fascination with caterpillars, why? Because his soulmate seemed to have fallen in love with butterflies.

Avery and Remus run into eachother in the library. Without their friends around they are able to strike up a conversation. After some time they start talking about how chaotic and difficult their friends are.
Remus thinks his friends are worse then Avery's, Avery thinks otherwise so he comes up with an idea.
"Let's switch friends, I hang out with yours and you hang out with mine" Remus thinks for a moment and agrees to it. They talk to their friends and they agree as well.

some writing tips (pt. one)
warning: this is a long post bc brevity isn’t one of my strong suits. also another disclaimer: these are just things i have learned/have worked for me. feel free to ignore them if they don’t help you!
1. the crossroads of plot and character
there will often come times when writing where the plot must move in a direction that the characters don’t want to follow. this usually results in characters being forced to act in ways that are not congruous with who they are, making them feel wooden or inconsistent to the reader.
one thing that has really helped me is some advice i heard from the writer’s of breaking bad. they said that one thing that really helped them was to ask “where is character x’s head at?”, or basically “what is my character thinking/feeling at this point in the story?”. it is almost always superior to have character drive plot instead of the other way around, so this question can help solve the issue of plot not gelling with character. i like to ask myself this question and reorganize the plot around my answer, and i have found it very useful for combatting content-based writer’s block.
2. rethinking character flaws
i have only recently learned how to better write character flaws, and i have found that they are huge for making a character feel real. whenever i used to think about flaws, i thought of them as huge, character-warping traits that basically defined an individual (example: prince zuko), but i always struggled to write them myself. lately, i have come view them as subtle beliefs or tendencies my character has that frames the way they interact with the world and others, and that has been massively helpful for me.
as sleazy as it is, i’m going to use my own writing as an example because i don’t read books anymore lmfao. anyhow, in my fic, “just practice”, annabeth has a tendency to be self-absorbed, which manifests in her assuming everyone thinks the way she does. nothing impressive, really. we see a few examples of it in action sprinkled throughout the story, and at first, it seems harmless, but the more we see of it, the more we realize what a huge issue it is in the context of the narrative as a whole. we see that it cripples the way that she communicates with others, how it has led her to hurting people she cares about because she assumed things about them, etc.
the fic is written from her perspective, so when she interacts with people, we can see that she genuinely doesn’t mean any harm. she just has a certain way of thinking. but in reality, the way that her flaw impacts others in the story becomes a huge source of conflict. it requires people to call her out and make her reflect on things. this is something that i think a lot of people can relate to. pretty much everyone acts with good intentions, but in reality they could be causing a lot of harm to those around them without meaning to.
i have found that using subtle flaws like this can be really helpful in making a believable character. i would suggest looking at people in your own life and their flaws as material you can use. most of them aren’t prince zuko - they have much subtler flaws about them that still have a huge role in who they are. once you have a flaw in mind for a character, it should inform their psychological make up, in either a minor or major way. i like to make this influence as subtle as i possibly can because that is what i personally find to be most realistic (note: by influence, i mean the way that the flaw manifests itself).
these flaws can be used to completely drive the plot depending on your genre. romance, young adult, literary fiction, etc. are all great candidates. for example, “catcher in the rye” is literally a plotless story about a teenage boy navigating his flaws.
here is some additional advice: show examples of the character’s flaws in action, first without drawing much attention to them, but with each new instance, crank up the impact of the flaw. this results in a natural escalation that flows really well with character development.
3. choices and consequences
foreshadowing is one of the most important tools a writer has to creating a satisfying narrative. in contrast, poor foreshadowing can ruin a narrative. nearly everyone can attest to how a deus ex machina or “subversion” completely derailed an otherwise good story (looking at your Game of Thrones Season 8). at the same time, foreshadowing is really hard to do well because of how much foresight it requires. outliners have the luxury of accounting for this before they write, but as a discovery writer, foreshadowing can feel impossible during your first draft.
that being said, i have personally found a work-around as a discovery writer for this exact problem, and that answer is to have narrative consequences. pretty much every plot point in your story should have consequences for the rest of the narrative going forward. this makes it a lot more easy for a discovery writer to write a better first draft - you just have to think about what how current plot point impacts the story going forward.
example: character gets into a foolish fight and loses their sword-fighting arm. now for the rest of the narrative, they can no longer rely on their prowess as a swordsman.
the neat thing about consequences is that you don’t have to plan ahead of time, but they still function similarly to foreshadowing.
4. foreshadowing proper
okay, but what about actual foreshadowing, you might ask. i think this is really hard to give concrete advice for, but here are some things that have helped me. i tend to have a lose idea of really major plot points that need to happen in my stories (example: the kara conversation in chapter seven of just practice). then, i try and think about how i can lay a trail of bread crumbs for that plot point to happen and reverse engineer my way there (example: chapter six, kara is mentioned by annabeth’s friends as having done something unforgivable to percy).
more specifically, i like to use character flaws as set up for plot points (this ties into the idea of consequences above). example: annabeth is increasingly frustrated by percy’s hiding secrets from her, stoking her already inquisitive nature to a boiling point, leading her to confront kara when she gets the opportunity, even though she knows she shouldn’t.
i primarily write drama/romance, so using character flaws as foreshadowing is my favored way of foreshadowing. i don’t think it translates as well for a mystery or a fantasy, but in those cases, laying bread crumbs still helps. in the harry potter books, rowling was often fond of burying important clues in irrelevant information. example: in book two, there is a brief mention of tom riddle’s diary in ginny’s cauldron when lucius malfoy slips it there at diagon alley.
another thing she does is to include information against the backdrop of another, more urgent plot point. example: in book four, harry tries to steal from professor snape for a task in the triwizard tournament or something, and snape accuses him of stealing ingredients to make polyjuice potion but it was barty crouch jr. who needed it to disguise himself as professor moody. you don’t pay much attention at the time because the tournament is more pressing.

Genuinely so fascinated by your analysis of the Merope Gaunt/Tom Riddle situation and the emphasis on her victimisation despite the fact she’s an abuser. I’d literally never considered it, despite knowing women are just as capable of abuse as men & despite how many times I’ve read HP. Reading it, I always thought the sympathy from the tale came from the treatment of Merope at the hands of her brother/father. They were clearly abusive & clearly undermined her belief in her own abilities (1/2)
I’m pretty sure they told her (or the Ministry guy?) she was a Squib and useless and couldn’t even perform magic (though once out from their control she obviously could). And clearly she’s had no one to care for her. It makes sense that she would obsess and idealise someone a) wealthy b) handsome c) muggle and therefore outside everything she knows and is meant to uphold (the majesty of the pureblood Gaunts, suffering in misery and extreme poverty!). (2/4)
and it is, it takes his power, his agency, his will, she abuses him and manipulated him. It could’ve been a moment of how men & women can do despicable things, how being abused isn’t a reason for perpetuating the cycle but the narrative definitely seems to blame Riddle Sr more than Merope! Interesting to consider thanks for sharing your thoughts! Sorry this is so long!!! (4/4)
First of all, thank you for reading my meta :) and sorry for the late response, I’ve been quite busy in the last week because of my graduation.
I also didn’t really realise when I read it as a child, but I still felt a deep sadness for Tom Riddle Sr, who was shown to be happy with someone esle before Merope and idk it just felt slightly disturbing.
Yes, I agree with you that Merope is herself a pitiable character and the story of her upbringing in herself deserves sympathy. She was treated horribly by both her father and her brother and constantly threatened and belitteled. I also agree that considering her past and the impact her family’s values had in the abuse she suffered, it’s only natural that she might develop an attraction for someone Muggle, wealthy, and overall seemingly stable. She could have either broken the chain of violence she was running away from and just tried to approach the boy she fancied in a healthy way, maybe even using magic to change her appearance for the better or something, but still respecting him; or she could perprate an abuse that is in many way worse than what she suffered herself. Unfortunately, she chose the second. From this point on, she is not pitiable anymore. What she did to Tom Sr. is particularly horrible in my view because he was powerless in the face of magic. So she obsessed with a Muggle in order to “escape” the pureblood vision of abuse of the Gaunts, but she ultimately ended up perpetrating a form of abuse on Muggles that was way more scarring that her brother’s physical attacks. I think this is the real tragedy of Merope’s character: that she was unable to break the chain of abuse she came from, and only worsened it. Tom Sr.’s tragedy is more evident, he was stolen fron his family to be forced in a relationship with sexual involvement and was also forced to leave the person he truly loved (the Muggle girl he was dating) and to whom he seemed to be truly connected and drawn to. He lost her forever because of this, and he died unmarried and alone. Merope ruined his life. While Dumbledore’s story in the books kind of overlooks all of this, Rowling said in an interview that such a background is a metaphor for Tom Riddle Jr’s essential tragical lack of love, as he was born from a forced union. She also says that this is not determining of Tom’s inability to love, he could have learned to love from someone else if he had been cared for during childhood. So JKR explicitly says that Tom Riddle was not structurally incapable of love, as someone tried to argue- which is all the more heartbreaking because it all could have been avoided. However, I still think it’s powerful in showing that cycles of abuse are hard to break and if no one does the consequences over generations and worse and worse.

any good recent reads u rec?
Hey @urmomisabell sorry this has taken a very long time to answer. Admittedly this year has been pretty busy for all of us. Personally I have mostly been trying to keep up with WIPS and reading older fics from favorite/rec lists.
I honestly don’t like to write up lists like this because I feel like we are all going to be limited to what we’ve been able to read.
We did a list of some fics we enjoyed from 2019 so feel free to look through that. I know it’s missing a lot, and again this is by no means complete, it’s only a few of the many fics that were just released in the last year or so. I’ve compiled a few more going through some of the Discord recs to try to fill this out more. -JD

In this production, Luna was played by Evanna Lynch, the actress who portrayed Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films!
For this production, StarKid created a song and artwork contest in which the song winners would have a song performed in the actual production. One of the entries for the song portion of the contest was won by Robert Manion, who was later featured in Twisted and most recently played The Professor in The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musical (x)
Darren’s body mic did not work during the filming of the production, so all of his vocals and dialogue had to be pulled from other mics on stage (x)

Content Analysis:
A Very Potter Senior Year is StarKid’s most interesting meta-musical regarding fandom. StarKid’s first published musical A Very Potter Musical, originally called ‘Harry Potter: The Musical’, was a work of musical comedy parody lovingly created by fans of the Harry Potter franchise for other fans that in a short amount of time created its own fandom for StarKid that continues to grow to this day. A Very Potter Senior Year is a fan-made production made by a theatre company for the sake of fulfilling their own fannish desires while also fulfilling the fannish desires of the fandom that they created for themselves from their original fanworks. That is a sentence that can only apply to StarKid. How often does a fanmade work gain such popularity, let alone one that uses theatre as its medium? And how often does an entire theatrical company, rather than an individual theatrical production, gain a loyal fandom through their own works? Through a combination of accessibility and dedication to fan culture and theatre, StarKid has created and fulfilled a very specific niche that has brought so much joy to so many people. AVPSY is StarKid’s thank you/love letter to the fans that have allowed their success to happen. It is a work that is comprised entirely of book-specific and movie-specific Harry Potter references (because, as any HP fan knows, they are different beings) and StarKid-specific references that any audience member who has not participated within the StarKid fandom would not understand, which makes this work incredibly special for the audience that it was intended for. The cast is composed of just about every StarKid actor associated with the company, whether or not they were involved in the first two Harry Potter musical parodies, making the show just as much of an homage to the team itself than it is to their Potter musical series alone, and they even managed to get an actual actor from the Harry Potter movies to reprise her role in this actual production?! If that doesn’t speak to the cultural weight of fandom and its power to bring people together, then I don’t know what does.
This production has all of the elements expected of a traditional StarKid show, with on-point performances, funny and entertaining dialogue, a handmade production quality that increases the humanity of the company, and a heartfelt message lying underneath the outlandishness and occasional vulgarity. Watching actors step back into the roles that gained them so much popularity and that obviously have so much sentimental value to them makes their impact so much stronger-Draco’s mere presence remains a laugh riot, Ron’s lines are funnier (and his long-awaited solo was so incredible!), Ginny’s increased role in the plot is more substantial, and Harry’s character development is more multidimensional, but in a way that solidifies rather than takes away from the intended warm and comedic tone of the show. Meredith Stepien stood out for obvious reasons, as she was the only actor in the company who played a character that another person originated, but as a fan and an audience member who rewatched this production with a more critical eye than usual, I felt like her performance was outstanding and one of the best in the show. Her performance as Hermione felt like one that honored the character’s relationship to the fans while also making the transition between Grueson’s performance to Stepien’s own practically seamless, once a joke about the change in performer was made early on in the show. Personally, I could not be more happy to add Meredith to the list of talented actors who have played one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. StarKid’s Hermione is a very difficult character to play because she fulfills many different roles in the StarKid Potter musical universe itself and to the fans-not only does she have to honor Rowling’s intentions with Hermione’s original character, lest fans take offence to the parody, but she has to establish herself as her own character who is often the butt of a joke, a core character for the plot’s resolution, and the main leading woman of a musical comedy, which comes with its own set of narrative and performative responsibilities. Stepien did an incredible job and I’m really glad that she got to shine more as a leading character once StarKid produced Firebringer. Her stage presence and comedic performance are, in a word, lovely. @ StarKid please give her more roles, thank you
As far as the rest of the company goes, Chris Allen is the unsung hero of A Very Potter Senior Year, playing Barty Crouch Jr., Moaning Myrtle, Mad-Eye Moody, and Tom Riddle Sr. It is generally expected of any StarKid performer that in any given production they are going to play more than one character, and one of StarKid’s defining traits is the comedic flexibility of the performers, but Allen in particular stole every scene that he was in, no matter how brief it was. And AJ Holmes! He played Gilderoy Lockhart perfectly! The only thing that I do not appreciate about his performance is that he doesn’t act enough in StarKid shows. I know he was busy writing music for their shows and he’s busy now being successful in the greater commercialized theatre world but I find it personally offensive that he doesn’t act in StarKid more. Gilderoy’s Mouse Monologue™ is one of the funniest scenes in the show and needs to be performed more for national monologue competitions and comedic auditions because the writing alone does not get enough credit, but no one can ever live up to how Holmes took over the stage with that scene.
Overall, A Very Potter Senior Year was a beautiful wrap-up for the musical fandom-within-a-fandom-made-by-fans. Even through a screen and watching the performance seven years later, I can feel the love and joy radiating from the actors and the unseen audience through my laptop screen and have never been more grateful that StarKid still to this day ensures that their work can be viewed by as many people as possible.

5 Netflix Films for the Week, set before the 21st c.
How’s quarantine going? Yeah, same here. But it’s Monday after all, and you still have over 150 hours to kill if you’re dealing with this quarantine via a week-by-week approach. I can help you kill around 8%, 12 of those hours. Here are five must-watch films set before the twenty-first century. Don’t watch them all at once, that’s lame.
Tumblr media
No spoilers.
5.  The Revenant (1823)
Main Cast:  Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy
“Revenge is in the Creator's hands.”
Tumblr media
Many of you will know of this film as the one which finally gave LDC his first Oscar, for Best Actor, at the 88th Academy Awards. Unfortunately, you would have stopped at that information and not bothered to watch the film. Released in 2015, the film is based on a novel of the same name. The definition of ‘Revenant’  is “a person who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead.” The story-line does not deviate from the title, as an American frontiersman named Hugh Glass is engulfed in a bear attack and is left for dead by his hunting crew. But he survives. And he’s fucking pissed. The novel is called The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, and yeah, the film is pretty vengeful too. Interestingly, even though Hugh Glass was indeed a real person, and it is mostly believed that the film and novel are based on a story, there exist no writings from the man himself to verify the description of his story. His story was first published in a Philadelphia literary journal known as The Port Folio. Some say that it is no more than a legendary tale. Nevertheless, a brilliant film, don’t miss out.
4. Before Sunrise (1994)
Only Cast (LOL): Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy
“If there's any kind of magic in this world…it must be in the attempt of understanding someone.”
Tumblr media
If you’re a fan of love stories/romantic films, and if you haven’t come across the Before Trilogy, I don’t know what kind of love stories you watch. Why is this film unique? In technical terms, it’s minimalist. In simple words, there’s no real plot. There’s no action or drama or horror. These two just walk and talk. Then they talk some more while walking, and when they’ve nothing to talk about, they just walk quietly. So why watch the film? For starters, it’s very peaceful and relaxing, unlike The Revenant, which is fucking intense. Secondly, the conversations in the film constitute some of the best dialogue-exchanges in the history of cinema. Their characters are very carefully crafted, as their varying perspectives on living and loving bring out some deep AF points throughout the film. It is a slow film no doubt, but I promise you that the blandness is worth it, and the ending is too nice. Don’t get bored, give the film some time and thank me later.
3. Django Unchained (1858)
Main Cast: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Leonardo DiCaprio
“Sold! To the man with the exceptional beard and his unexceptional nigga!”
Tumblr media
Django Unchained is Tarantino’s highest-grossing film ever, for good reason. Although it has been criticized for historical inaccuracies, violence, and unprecedented high use of the N-word, Tarantino delivered one of the most dramatic and entertaining films from the era of plantation slavery. While the image above portrays Foxx, a slave, and LDC, a rich plantation owner, the highlight of the film was the German dentist-turned-bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz, played by Christoph Waltz. Waltz’s performance is impeccable, only matched by his portrayal of Standartenführer Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds (also directed by Tarantino). While the film starts off with Dr. Schultz hunting for his bounties, it eventually goes on to become a rescue mission, where Django and Schultz look for the former’s estranged wife, Broomhilda von Shaft. TW; extreme cursing and racism. But the film is a work of art. In fact, Jamie Foxx has revealed that LDC was pretty uncomfortable on the set, as his character had to use extremely racial slurs. But boy, he pulled off that role brilliantly.
2. Zodiac (1969 - 1980s)
Main Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr.
“I wanna report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway, to a public park, you'll find kids in a brown car. They were shot with a 9mm Luger. I also killed those kids last year. Goodbye.”
Tumblr media
What happens when Iron Man, Hulk and Mysterio gang-up against one of America’s most notorious serial-killers? For now, I can only tell you that it was a pretty uneven contest. Based on a true story, this film depicts the useless San Francisco Police Department’s hunt for the Zodiac Killer, led by Dave Toschi (Ruffalo), and aided by political cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Gyllenhaal) and crime reporter Paul Avery (Downey). In case you’re wondering if they’re fictional characters, they’re not. They became pretty famous while the Zodiac Killer was running havoc, and have multiple articles and Wikipedia pages dedicated to all three of them. The Zodiac Killer remains unidentified by the way, and the cases are still officially open. Why watch the film then? Because the mysteriousness of it will blow your mind. Note that the film is directed by David Fincher, the same guy who directed Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl and Mindhunter, among many other murder mysteries and thrillers. Don’t be surprised if you spend the rest of the day investigating the case yourself, happens to the best of us.
Consolation Prize: The Irishman (1950s - 1970s)
Main (legendary) Cast: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci
“I work hard for them when I ain't stealing from them.”
Tumblr media
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking how can a film with a cast of three actors who redefined cinema in the late twentieth century earn only a consolation prize on this list? The truth is, that such crime/mafia/gangster films, no matter how legendary the cast is, only appeal to a particular audience. A lot of film buffs who truly appreciate cinema and actors are simply not enticed by this genre, which is okay. Nevertheless, this film, which spans over 200 minutes, is one of Martin Scorsese’s best works, along with other mob movies like Goodfellas and The Departed. Based on a true story, it follows the adventures of ordinary truck driver-turned-assassin Frank ‘Irishman’ Sheeran (De Niro), who gets mixed up in some extraordinary business with mobster Russell Bufalino (Pesci), his Pennsylvania crime family and American labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino). The punchline of the film is “I heard you paint houses” - a mob code implying: I heard you murder people for money, the paint being the symbol of the blood that splatters when bullets are riddled into the target. Typical Scorsese, mesmerizing direction. The punchline is also the name of the novel the film is based on, in case you love reading about organized crime.
1. Dallas Buyers Club (1985)
Main Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto
“Sometimes, I feel I'm fighting for a life that I just ain't got the time to live. I want it all to mean something.”
Tumblr media
On the day of the 86th Academy Awards, Facebook and Twitter erupted in outrage. LDC had not been awarded the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of  Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, also known as The Film You Must Never Watch With Your Family. I merely asked every hot-tempered schmucks who posted that LDC had been snubbed, “Have you watched Dallas Buyers Club?” Either the answer was no, or the answer never came. The point being, Dallas Buyers Club is one of the best films ever made. Based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, a once homophobic, junkie cowboy diagnosed with AIDS, co-starring Jared Leto (who won best supporting actor) as Rayon, a fictional trans-woman with HIV, this film tells us an extraordinary tale of friendship, hope and empathy. When Ron discovers that the Federal Drug Administration has been systematically banning cheap drugs that can improve the condition of existing HIV-AIDS patients, he opens a ‘buyers club’, that enabled sick people to make drug purchases at lower prices. Things get more interesting with the role of  Dr. Eve Saks, an AIDS doctor, who recognizes the villainous role of the state, but wants to remain within the ambit of the law. Ron’s character development might be the highlight of the film, as he transforms from a selfish, homophobic asshole to a dying man waging war against the American government, fighting for the healthcare of the underprivileged. Very few equally magnificent films have come out post Dallas Buyers Club. Don’t miss out.
So that’s it folks. Make good use of your quarantine by immersing yourself in good quality cinema. I’ll come up with some more suggestions on films and TV shows soon enough. Till then, Netflix and Don’t Chill.
