Today's additional thoughts that will likely never get included but might be... Too cracky for the angst-fill He Remembers/Lonely Nights verse...

Jake being at an event and Admiral Kazansky is there. Now Ice knows Jake is the young man that Bradley is massively hung up on. And he's been trying to better vocalise his emotions, so he decides to talk to the new Lieutenant about his first air-to-air kill and also hint that he'd be welcome to the family, if that were ever come to pass, that Jake wouldn't have to worry about Bradley's family not accepting him as Bradley's partner...

(He maybe wants to reassure Jake that it's okay to be gay, that he can be happy. He knows how much Bradley has been struggling so he's coming from a place of wanting to help. But also coming from a place of decades of repression and emotional disconnect and talking in the vaguest of terms...)

So Ice catches Jake and makes small talk, congratulates him on the air-to-air and then sort of talks around in circles about the Navy being one big family and how he'd be happy to call Jake his son if life ever pans out that way...

Jake's just standing there getting more and more confused, because Admiral Kazansky is talking like he knows Jake is gay. (Moment of absolute terror but then slow-relief when he knows it's not a dishonourable discharge...) Then the Admiral mentions having a partner, and maybe he's just come out to Jake?!? But also he's maybe being propositioned? Does the Admiral want him to... Call him daddy? Jake does not want to say yes, but he's also worried that maybe he has to? (He's not currently with or even talking to Bradley, but he expresses his concerns to Javy but nothing truly good or bad happens... Just standard life in the Navy. So he's not in trouble for not accepting the proposition (that never was)...)

Few years later when Bradley has sorted through his shit and Jake has forgiven him and Bradley is taking him home to meet the parents and Jake's all like: "Oh. That conversation makes so much more sense now..."

When Mav hears about it he's thoroughly amused, but Bradley is horrified.

Side note: Etho wears his mask under his chin mostly just around bdubs, but he starts wearing it down more often around doc, tango, or others who are used to seeing the damage. More than anything else, he’s sure to keep it for protection purposes when he’s outside working, exploring, or anything else that isn’t just hanging and chatting with friends :]

i think the show is playing a smart game of chess here, getting each of our characters in the positions they need to be in. in the arch museum, percy almost tells annabeth that he'd choose her side over his dad's. we know in the books, that this is the sentiment annabeth gives percy in the zoo transport van.. but at the point that percy says this in the show, i don't think annabeth would be prepared to respond in kind. she's too loyal to her mom, to the systems she's learned to abide within. in order to get her to that point, she needs a reason to put percy first.

by making the echidna attack at the arch occur because athena got embarassed and upset about her daughter standing by while another kid made a decision.. and then having percy be the one to stand up and defend annabeth against the monsters that had basically come from athena at this point.. the show is giving annabeth that reason. athena will fight her. percy will fight for her. and now suddenly her character is perfectly positioned to choose percy.

You know, it's a little odd. All of the pieces in this series are about isolation and escape--Icarus, Orpheus and Eurydice, Prometheus, and certainly the Minotaur. But A Crack in the Labyrinth came first, and more than any of the rest, it's about resignation. About having fought and scrabbled and clawed desperately and still...not having made it. Still being trapped inside, alone.

And when I made it, I hadn't really intended to say anything more than that one piece, but I just couldn't leave it there. I had to give him the whole story--an innocent beginning, same as anyone. I couldn't leave the ending as it was written; I'd initially just intended to have the conclusion the myth gives him, slain by Theseus, but...if I'm going to say, "I'm the minotaur, monstrous and alone and told by the world that that is right and deserving," then I am also saying "you, who feels deeply for this, for whom this resonates, you are also the minotaur and we are monsters who deserve the ending that is written for us." And I...just can't bear to. There has to be hope.

So there is, very literally, light at the end of the labyrinth, one way or another.
