Rick Riordan's problematic age gaps

Apparently reddit hates criticism because this got removed from there after a few minutes, maybe I can get it back up...anyways.

The age of consent in Texas is 17, Texas is where Rick lived (according to wikipedia) up until 2013. And yet...here we are.

Where do I even begin with this bullf*ckery? How about the most egregious of all?

Luke and Annabeth

We have two lines confirming their mutual feelings, one from The Demigod Diaries:

"Overtime, Annabeth developed a crush on Luke. As Annabeth got older, Luke developed feelings for her, too."

Mark of Athena (from her conversation with Venus):

"First there was Luke Castellan, her first crush, who had seen her only as a little sister; then he’d turned evil and decided he liked her—right before he died."

Now let me remind you, Annabeth and Luke have a seven year age difference, they knew each other at 7 and 14. By the time he died, Annabeth was just 16, while he was 23. And it's implied he begun returning her feelings a little before he asked her to run away, perhaps when she was 14. He's paralleled with Percy as Annabeth is his string in the river styx. He asks Annabeth explicitly if she loved him romantically (and she denies because Percy is there).

It's disgustingly inappropriate but at the very least they don't end up together...as for when they do...

Sadie Kane and Anubis

When it comes to immortal romance, I usually go for coded age. Anubis is thousands of years old but is mentally and physically 16, which is fine and dandy except for the fact that Sadie is 12. What do you want me to say except Rick is disgusting for promoting this.

Speaking of extreme age gaps:

Calypso and Leo

When you have a philosophy that every character must end up in a relationship, you run out of sensical options to pair up. Now, I'm a Caleo hater mainly because of how it retconned PJO and also because they are very toxic.

Now hold on, doesn't Caleo fall into coded age? Calypso is 15/16 and Leo is 15, so it's A okay! I suppose, if it wasn't for Calypso's past loves.

Odysseus, he had a wife and a son who was 20 years old in his final year on Ogygia, he is well into adult age. She also mentions the privateer Francis Drake and his wife Elizabeth, he was 45 when he married her.

If your defence is that she's actually thousands of years old, then that must also apply to Caleo. You cannot have it both ways.

Hazel and Frank

It's not that bad but it's necessary to mention for the point I will be making.

The timeline is messed up but I think they're 13 and 16 and meet at 12-15. I mean, come on.

Misogyny and Racism

What do these have in common? Well in 3/4 or 4/4, the younger one is female. In 2/4 or 3/4, the younger one is a person of colour.

Remember Nico? His crush on Percy as revealed in HoH? Well in MoA, there's a cheeky little red herring that happens a bit before Annabeth's talk with Venus (where it is revealed that Luke liked Annnabeth back). She wonders if Nico had a crush on her, but denounces him as too young. Now, Nico's age is inconsistent, I am unsure of his gap with Annabeth but I do know his gap with Percy. It's 3 years 5 months in PJO and 2 years 5 months in HoO (the series we are currently in).

So in RR's messed up mind, a white boy having a relationship with someone 2 to less than 4 years his senior is inappropriate. But a black tween girl dating someone 3 years her senior is just fine, a 12 year old biracial black girl dating a 16 year old is daijoubu, a 15 year old mestizo Latino boy dating an elderly woman is relationship goals, or the reverse a 15 year old girl dating middle aged men is a tragic romance and a 12 year old girl having mutual feelings with a 19 year old man is a "love story for the ages"!

The tv adaptation is so infuriating for this, they made Annabeth black, a lot of the changes they made came off as micro aggressions but especially her relationship with Luke. It's reduced to Luke simping for Annabeth behind her back and it's even worse because you can visibly see how large their age gap is. Heck, Charlie Bushnell and Leah Jeffries have a smaller age gap than book Luke and Annabeth.

Adultification is a huge real life issue. Children of colour and especially female children of colour are seen as less innocent than their white counterparts. Rick, who is dedicated to inclusivity should've known better than to include these illegal relationships. Stans will try and make excuses but it's there, deal with it.

As a black teenage girl who has been a fan of Rick's work for 12 years, I am disappointed.

Okay, so I know it's a popular fandom analysis that Mystra met Gale when he was very young ie a teen, and I've been seeing posts conflating his meeting Elminster at 8 as being directed by Mystra / related to her 'watching him'. This... just doesn't align with established FR lore however.

Context:

BG3 is set in 1492 DR.

Elminster has known Mystra for over a thousand years (he is old as balls). She made him her chosen in 240 DR when he was a 'young adult' (28 yrs).

Mystra (the goddess) has had a number of 'incarnations': Gale mentioned one of them associated with Karsus's Folly and the fall of Netheril, however in 1385 DR Cyric allegedly murdered her, setting off the Spellplague which mostly dissipated about a decade after. Mystra did not reappear until 1479 DR where she contacted Elminster to help restore her power from a weakened state, also asking him to find her new Chosen. She was not made 'whole' again until ~1487.

Based on the above, the longest Gale could have known Mystra would be 12-13 years, and given I think it's unlikely that he's canonically 21, it seems to reason that Elminster meeting him at 8 and offering to mentor him was not at the behest of Mystra. It seems more likely that he trained under Elminster / went to Blackstaff Academy and graduated before ever meeting her, and it was his existing connection to Elminster that recommended him to her when she reappeared in 1479.

Depending on how old you think he is, I think it would seem more likely that he met her between the ages of 20-25 which is still young (making him 32-37 in game), though I suppose as young as 18 could be possible if he's 30. But there's almost no way imo that she met / watched / picked out / whatever you want to call it Gale as an 8 yr old kid based on his appearance / general history. Let me repeat, Mystra was out of action for almost 100 years prior to 1479, ie 13 years ago.

Another possibility is that Larian just isn't adhering super closely to FR lore, and/or they've got their dates mixed up because modern FR lore feels like it should be spread out over decades, not basically a single decade. The Second Sundering was 1482-1487. It's actually nuts.

Because I Want You // Part of the adult AU, one-shot series. Steve and Eddie have been broken up for 9 years. It just so happens that they both have 3-year-olds, and they end up in the same daycare, allowing them to reunite. It’s bittersweet in a lot of ways, mostly because Eddie feels so guilty for how things ended with Steve in their previous relationship. This story is about them trying to get back together.

Modern Problems, Modern Solutions Pt1 Pt2 Pt3 Pt4 Pt5 Pt6 Pt7 [FINISHED] // Modern AU. Eddie's POV and his judgy, budgie, anxiety-filled self-denying for a long time that he has a crush on Steve. I wanted to explore what being an awkward teen was like (again) and how the personality dynamics would work between Steve and Eddie if they were in more modern times. A story full of miscommunications set in 2015 ish. This mini-series is finished, and it has a happy ending. Enjoy the very soft end for the boys.

Exploring the idea of Eddie coming back very "monstrous" from the Upside Down, and he doesn't have a lot of memories on how to be human. Through Leagues and Miles Pt1 // Eddie and Steve meet up again after 7 years. They're proper adults now and Eddie is living his dream of being a rockstar, while Steve has just started to go back to school to become a teacher. They were only supposed to be meeting up for a reunion with The Party, but one thing leads to another, and well... maybe acting on that crush from 7 years ago is worth it.

It's Snowing In Hawkins // This is all fluff. Steve goes over to visit Eddie during a heavy snow in Hawkins and gets roped into helping him build a snow fort. Both of them have been inching toward a romance for months now, and Steve adores how innocent and young their relationship feels. It’s the start of something real tonight, and it makes Steve feel brilliantly happy. 

Before the Fire - Steddie Microfic // Wrote for December's prompt "pine" (508 words). Steve and Eddie are around a fire and Eddie is trying to cheer Steve's up because 'someone' is missing and Steve is beside himself with worry. Eddie is pining, but Steve seeks him out for comfort.

We the Youth (1987) [Link to art] Part One Part Two Part Three Part Four Part Five [FINISHED] // A five-part, mini-series that is 100% complete and being posted during the Stranger Things Reverse Big Bang 2024. This Stobin-centric story is about Robin learning how to love herself (with the help of her very queer life)! The first part of the story focuses on Robin losing her job and seeking comfort from her best friend, Steve. After moving to New York after graduation to work for a year before college, Robin has "lost her path" and isn't sure what she wants anymore.

Each chapter focuses on a different kind of love, and how difficult it is to find a place to belong when you're a young adult. (Especially when you're a young, queer adult in the 80s). The story has a happy ending though! So please enjoy this lovely platonic Stobin tale and the importance of having people in your life who love and support you.

Momento Mori [complete story 15/15] [Accompany Art] // Steve gradually falls in love with the memory of Eddie Munson, while creating a deep bond with the uncle Eddie left behind. Eddie Munson has died. He died and left behind people who care for him—more people than he knew. Kataang “But it’s only a 2-year age difference!” argument

Ah yes.  The amount of times KAs bellow this, along with “...but Katara was a mother to everyone!” can wallpaper my entire apartment.  

Let me deep-dive as to why a 2-year age difference is actually much more significant between a mature teenager like Katara and a carefree kid like Aang, particularly in the universe of ATLA.

The ATLA world isn’t structured like our modern day, where 14/15-year-old girls worry about Algebra tests and Homecoming dates, or 12/13-year-old boys only have to skip down a couple blocks from their junior high to the big-kid school to meet their first crush “forever girl” for some ice-cream and Instagram Selfies after her friendly tennis practice, and French Kiss under the bleachers before her big brother catches them and nearly vomits from Oogies.

Oh no.  The ATLA world is very much a dystopian, post-war world... where children like Katara, Sokka, Suki, Jet, Yue, Azula and Zuko had to forfeit any sense of normal childhood and instead take up more mature responsibilities for themselves and those around them.  Toph even had to learn to be independent and raise herself for survival, despite being the same age as Aang.

What separates Aang from the other young characters is that he actually got to have a normal childhood.  

Aang lived in the air temples, where monks lived in isolation and cultivated their own food and treated living things differently from the rest of the world.  They travelled everywhere, but kids like Aang were shielded from any sense of conflict or confrontation, and they definitely weren’t raised to see the world as a societal, economical hierarchy.  The pre-ATLA AirNomad world raised carefree innocent kids who got to take their time to grow up, because they never had to prepare for a brutal, cruel, unforgiving world where people and creatures they loved could die outside of natural causes.

Aang mastered airbending naturally, and for fun.  It wasn’t to prepare for war, but for his proud cultural heritage.  On the other hand, Katara worked herself to the bone to master waterbending... not for fun... but to fight in a war, to help train the Avatar to end this 100-year-war, and to maintain a delicate connection to her cultural heritage that has all but died out.  

Katara and Aang’s perspectives have been different since the beginning.

And the “2 years is not that big a deal!” argument totally overlooks their maturity gap as characters.

Katara was a girl raised in a remote war-torn village in the South Pole.  She lost her mother in this war and had to internalize that grief for years as she took up more adult responsibilities to help her small village.  By the time she was Aang’s age, she cooked for people, cleaned for people, helped raise other people’s children... and, as seen in the S.2 episode “The Serpent’s Pass,” she didn’t flinch when having to deliver babies out of women’s vaginas.

Katara is 14, going on 25.

Aang, not having been raised in a war, was a kid.  He was that carefree, playful, innocent soul up in the Southern Air Temple who loved games, and recess, and pulling pranks on his teachers.  At the age of 12, Aang still hasn’t had to learn to be responsible in an economical world that functions through jobs, currency, and self-sufficiency (and he’ll probably never have to, since the Avatar title rewards him with free-loading hospitality anywhere he goes).  When Katara someone isn’t willing to cook for him, Aang’s instinct is to dumpster-dive for lettuce, as seen in the S.3. episode “The Headband”.  This is also the episode where, not only is Katara comfortable enough to dress up as Aang’s (pregnant!) mom, but Aang gleefully shows off his grade-school crafting skills with dried-macaroni collage artwork of Ozai-- you know, the kind that children usually give to their parents to proudly post on the refrigerator?  And this wasn’t sweet-innocent doe-eyed Aang from Season 1.  This was kid-emotionally-processing-some-real-world-shit-Season 3 Aang.  His maturity was still lacking.  And let’s not forget that, before the iceberg... the most horrifying thing Aang had to deal with was cleaning his own room.

Aang was 12, going on 8.

Even in the final scene of the show, Aang is still that kid, sitting on the ground and playfully teasing his pet lemur with a toy while the older teens mingle with tea and paintings and critical-thinking games like PaiSho.

The maturity gap was very much present through the end.

And I have a hard time believing Aang even knew what a vagina was, by the time he and Katara french-kissed in the finale. 

Look.  The point is not whether or not Aang did know.  The point is, you, a hypothetical Kataang fan... had to stop for a moment to consider that.

And that’s what makes Kataang weird.

Lille’s Aging Mod - Now with Infants and Pets!

Behold, I live! And I mod! Been a while hasn’t it?

Anyways, with the Infant Update out now my old Aging Mod was in dire need of an update.

This is that update. In the nearly 7 years since I made the original, EA has tinkered with the aging on their end, added pets that I never made changes for and generally changed things about behind the scenes, so I remade the entire thing from scratch.

As with the old version, this Mod changes sims’ and now also pets’ lifespans to something I find more reasonable/useful. Since there is now 3 differently tuneable Lifespans (Short, Normal, Long) as opposed to the old Normal + Multiplier System, I figured I’d combine my personal setup with 2 fairly popular setups I am used to from Sims 2: 1 sim day=1 year and Gestational Based Aging, where 1 sim day = 3 months, based on pregnancy length.

Here’s what is getting changed to what:

For my personal, aka the “Normal” Lifespan settings I wanted my sims to live longer, have more time for fun things, friends and dating, while also preventing the awkward situation I used to frequently run into where my sims would not get to meet their grandkids because they turned into elders in the middle of their kids being children/teens. I also added a full 28 days to the YA lifespan instead of the like... 8 that EA added, so your sims can be young adults AND have the university experience, since getting your first degree always takes at least 3 weeks.

For both Day=Year and Gestational Aging I rather arbitrarily set the Age Up Milestones as follows:

Babies: 0-1

Infants: 1-3

Toddlers: 3-6

Child: 6-12

Teen: 12-18

YA: 18-32

Adult: 32-60

Elder: 60+ with a general life expectancy of 80

And for pets:

Kittens: 0-1

Adult Cats: 1-10

Elder Cats: 10-18

Puppies: 0-1

Adult Dogs: 1-9

Elder Dogs: 9-14

That should be all. I of course haven’t tested it extensively, so I might update/tweak as I go. Ya know, the usual for my things.

Now includes a file to adjust horse aging as follows:

On Short/Gestational I picked chose the following values:

Foal 0-4 years

Adult 4-24 years

Elder 24-30 years

Which is what google told me makes sense for horses, so we’ll go with that.

For normal I changed the values as follows:

Foal: 7(EA) -> 8

Adult: 50(EA) -> 52

Elder: 13(EA) -> 20

So not that much changed, but I haven’t really played with horses much yet so I don’t know if their lifespans will bother me.

Tigerheartstar is one of my least favorite cats in the series. I really dislike cats like Rainflower, Thistleclaw, Oakstar, and also Sparkpelt ( of her being low-key emotionally abusive towards her son over his name change in Sky and also being bigoted towards SkyClan and Twigpaw in AVOS and facing no consequences for it) but if there is any character that I hate w/ a burning passion it would def be Tigerheart. I reread some of OOTS last year and while I found his and Dovewing’s relationship cute when I was a kid, it REALLY came across as grooming on his end upon rereading as an adult. It’s gross and I just despise the fact that he was the one out of his siblings to live bc I just adored Flametail and Dawnpelt, and he’s just,,, an asshole? I also found it weird as hell how while he was meeting with Dovewing he was also trying to flirt with Ivypool while training in the Dark Forest calling her his favorite of the sisters, what a creep. I can’t blame Ivypool for being so angry that Dovewing would leave ThunderClan for him, he’s not a good guy in the slightest but he keeps getting rewarded for his shitty behavior. Also I hate that ppl make it out like he was a great father to Shadowsight in TBC, he really wasn’t: it was DOVEWING AND PUDDLESHINE who were there to support Shadow 99% of the time, not Tiger. Also his behavior now is really not surprising, considering the way he acted in his super edition towards the church cats (trying to force them to be more like the clans, being judgemental, etc) and also I’m still salty that we didn’t get Tawnystar. In all honesty Blackstar should’ve made Tawnypelt deputy instead of Rowanclaw in OOTS

I personally do like Sparkpelt and I’m really hoping that bit in Sky was a one of ooc Erin moment (since it was for Finchlight definitely).

But yeah onto Tigerfart as I like to call him.

Ikr his relationship with Dove is so creepy? I’ve said before but that relationship really skewed what I thought was normal, and I actually had a warrior cats OC who started dating an adult cat when she was 6 moons old and that was just very cool and romantic to my 12/13 year old brain directly because of TigerDove, they were based off them. That scene when Tigerheart confesses that he loves Dovepaw is just so creepy and gross, especially when you factor in he was a warrior while she was still a kit, these two were never for one second apprentices at the same time, he’s always been an adult in all the time he knew her and told her that he was in love with her while she was still an apprentice, after asking her to meet him somewhere in the middle of the night in secret.

Out of all the cats StarClan had to literally bring back to life, why did it have to be him? Tawnypelt still had a claim to leadership at that point she should have been leader.

What he’s doing now is 100% in character and I wish more people saw it that way. He’s so much more interesting when you embrace his consistent shittiness throughout the years. And one day I hope the narrative actually punishes him for it. He got nothing for encouraging and leading the Sisters invasion, nothing. And I hate that.

How it started- My timeline

I have looked at recent posts asking when you knew you were a sissy, sucked your first cock and got your pussy filled, this got me thinking, looking back I always knew.

I wish I knew then what I know now, I think looking back I should have become a girl but did not, my advice to younger adults is wait but when you know you know, be true to yourself.

I have been through the purging and starting over again, tried living with real girls but was never any good at pleasing them. Hello there! Happy to see a request not exclusively for the kings. Lets me get into the heads of the guards a bit more. One thing I will have to touch on however. In my rules I state I will not write Alec or Jane in a romantic/mate/S/O setting. Because I do see them as their book counterparts, and there they are 12/13 years old. Humans had become truly odd through out the centuries, in Caius’ humble opinion. While he was quite up to date with the on goings in the human world, he still could not quite grasp why they were so obsessed with the darker things in life. Especially a myth like vampires. So when he was out on a routine mission with the guard and stumbled across his potential mate, it did puzzle him how... resigned they were to their fate. Almost joyful at the prospect of him bringing them back to Volterra. 

Would end up gently interrogating them about their massive interest in his species. Had they perhaps seen something they shouldn't? Had a vampire been careless around them as a child? Caius entered full security breach mode, when the answer was actually quite simple “They were much more interesting than werewolves.” Ah, at least his mate had excellent taste and saw reason. They might get along just fine.

Caius could appreciate their massive collection of literature however. When he looked past the children books, there were also classics like Carmilla and Dracula. Both beautiful special editions that had been well taken care of. When he stumbled across a certain section of adult romance literature however, a smirk graced his lips. Unable to fight the urge to tease his significant other about this.

When Felix had imagined meeting his would be mate, them being so positive about vampirism was not part of his imagination. He had expected them to be quite terrified of him, hell even most vampires felt fear creep up on them when Felix approached. But this human was turning out to be something out of the ordinary. It was a blessing in Felix’ eyes. That the universe had rewarded him with a mate that saw passed what he was.

After the initial shock and confusion, Felix would be exceptionally amused at their antics. They certainly had built up their own view of what vampires were like. Both him and Demetri would humor them with stories that either confirmed or disproved their various theories. 

His significant other would end up asking him a multitude of questions, endlessly curious about the different aspects of being a vampire. Some things he would gladly show them and talk about, others... not so much. 

“Can I watch you feed?” “Absolutely not.

Would have to sit them down at some point for a serious talk about what vampires actually were like. Fiction, no matter how dark in nature; had a tendency to still not measure up to what his world was like.

Okay well if I’ve been writing a bunch of WIP fics so I’ve kinda of dissected what I think and.

Eddie wasn’t born in Hawkins, he was born in a different state. Had a seeming normal childhood of mom, dad and him, he went to school, liked to play tag, he had friends, he never went to bed hungry, his mom was his favourite person in the world, his dad was a little cold at times but nothing young Eddie couldn’t get past.

Then his mom gets sick when he’s 8 and it becomes hospitals and tests and a lot of crying and then she’s gone by the time he’s 9.

His dad starts drinking loses his job they end up moving to the trailer park in Hawkins because his dad knows someone who can get him a job at the local plant, Eddie moving in at school half way through the year makes the transition worse he becomes the new kid and is by default deemed weird. 

his dad then starts inviting him along to these business meetings in a sketchy building where men play poker and eddie sits for hours and watches these old men swear and drink and gamble. his dad takes him out of town for once and eddie thinks he’s getting the dad he’s always dreamed of fishing or camping or something you see in movies. instead Eddie’s dad teaches him to hotwire a truck and they take the truck to a guy who gives his dad a wad of cash only to return the next night to the same sketchy building to gambling it away again. eddie just thinks this is how adults are.

at 12, his dad is still drinking he’s still “working” but something feels off about it and they never talk about it but Eddie would rather be anywhere else than around him and forms a band, corroded coffin. his dad starts disappearing for days at a time but eddie thinks his dad is giving him responsibility and its fun to be able to invite his friends/bandmates over to play dnd without the fear of his dad barging in. 

he ends up going through changes as a teen and finds his moms jewelry box in an old suitcase when he’s 13 he takes the thick metal band and starts wearing it on his right hand. he ends up hiding the box in an old abandoned hunting cabin out in the woods so his dad can’t pawn it. 

Eddie doesn’t date or really think about girls because he’s more focused on his band and his dnd campaign when this punk band comes to play at the local theatre and all his friends are talking about going Eddie does the local paper run for 3 months worth of sundays to afford a ticket. There, he realizes that he’s attracted to the male lead singer and it changes him completely. 

Eddie’s 2 days away from turning 15 when his dad is incarcerated for carjacking and eddie is sitting in the police station while his uncle wayne is called. 

from there uncle wayne moves in and actually gets a job at the planet unlike his father. eddie befriends reefer rick and starts being his helper. Eddie finds out the dishwasher guy at the 24 hour dinner on the hill does tattoos out of truck on friday nights. He befriends him too. eddie grows his hair out. finds new rings to wear. loves to paint and draw and play guitar for all hours of the day. 

he fails his senior year on purpose the first time. having no clue what he would do outside of high school because its easy. high school is easy. the second time he actually did try but comes up short in grades in 1 class and he’s pretty sure it’s because Mrs O’donnell saw him smoking a joint behind the school’s dumpsters one day. His third go around he meets these nerdy kids that worship him and for once he feels like he’s doing something right with his life by being their friend.

How old is the Batfamily (in New Earth)?

These are my personal calculations. Comics are bad at continuity, I’m sure we’re all aware. 

I use Tim as my north star in my calculations because we have a couple sure fire ages for him, unlike people like Dick or Bruce whose continuity is less concrete. Tim was 3 when the Graysons died, 13 after Jason died, and he just turned 16 shortly before Jason turned 18. 

Tim’s birthday is July 19th, and Jason’s is August 16th. Since Tim turns 16 the same year Jason would turn 18, Jason is exactly 1 year, 11 months, and 3 days older than Tim - almost 2 years. Jason’s death certificate says he died April 27, at 15 years old; this means Jason was turning 16 that year, and it also means when Tim arrives at 13, it’s not yet summer, so Tim is turning 14 soon. Batman #436 confirms Jason was with Bruce for 2 years, making him 13-going-on-14 when Bruce adopted him, and Tim the same age when he comes in behind him. 

Dick has multiple dates presented for his birthday, so exact age is a no go. In 1940, Dick was 8 years old when he became Robin. That is impossible now, if Tim attended Haly’s Circus when he was 3, and Jason was between them as Robin. In Final Crisis, Dick’s depicted as 12 when his parents die. This would make him about 9 years older than Tim, and 7 years older than Jason. That would mean when Jason was adopted, Dick would be 20, and he’d be 22 when Jason died, and 26 when he became Batman. 

Tim is 9yo when he realizes Robin is Dick Grayson. That makes Dick about 18yo. Two years later, Jason is Robin for another two years, take 6 months for his training. These ages fit together nicely. 

Bruce was 25 when he finished his Batman training. Batman: Year One is probably a full year, and The Long Halloween is DEFIANTELY a year, so let’s say Bruce adopts Dick (Dark Victory) two years after returning to Gotham - 27yo. This makes Bruce 15 years older than Dick. This works for their fuzzy awkward family dynamic, where Bruce is something between a big brother and a dad, getting more parental as Bruce gets older, and grating on Dick’s growing independence as he’s being given MORE restrictions as he ages, not less. It makes Bruce 22 years older than Jason (35yo when he adopts him), a more reasonable age gap for a parent and child, which plays into Bruce’s more immediately parental relationship with Jason (and thus Dick’s jealousy over it). It then makes Bruce 24 years older than Tim (37 after Jason’s death and upon meeting Tim). Bruce’s birthday is Feb. 19th, early in the year, so its not as awkward to juggle months into the equation. This makes Bruce 41 at the end of New Earth; I was honestly surprised, it’s a pretty reasonable age for a fit man to be Batman-ing, if there is ANY age considered reasonable to be Batman-ing. 

Cassandra Cain is already 18 when Jason turns 18, and her birthday is January 26, so Cass is exactly 6 months and 21 days older than Jason. 

Early on, Stephanie says she’s “older” than Tim, though I don’t know how she’d know that at the time. Later, Stephanie’s attending freshman year of college when she first becomes Batgirl, so I think it’s safe to say she’s about 1 year older than Tim, making her 15 when they meet when Tim is 14, and 18 when Tim is 17 at the end of the New Earth run. 

Damian... I feel like someone told me Damian was slightly hyper-aged as a toddler, but I can’t find that information r/n, and also I don’t care, so I’m moving forward as if Damian was born naturally, and not artificially altered at all. I’m convinced the more we see Damian drawn to look more like Thalia, the more we’re just casually being asked to kindly forget about the racist “genetically modified to be perfect, i.e. look more like Bruce” Thing. So I’m gonna. 

Since I think the fathers day comic between Tim and Bruce occurs before we meet Damian, and father’s day is in June, and his birthday’s in July, I’m going to assume Tim is 17 when he meets Damian for the first time, who is described as 10. This means Damian is 7 years younger than Tim, 9 years younger than Jason, 16 years younger than Dick, and 31 years younger than Bruce. This is particularly interesting, because Bruce and Dick’s age gap is about the same as Dick and Damian’s age gap, which draws more of a parallel between Bruce and Dick’s awkward pseudo-big-brother/actual-adopted-dad relationship and Dick and Damian’s pseudo-dad/actual-big-brother relationship. 

And then there’s Barbara. What to do with Barbara. Barbara's got de-aged over the years to make her a more palatable ship for Dick (no hatin’, just true). It’s cute for a teenage boy to have a widdle crush on his adult friend/big sister figure who’s old enough to have a doctorate, and then have him fall in love with an alien girl closer to his own age, but when they decided they wanted this ship to be viable, they had to close that 8-10 year age gap, or Babs was gonna look like a creep. Detective Comics 871 aged her all the way down to Dick’s exact age, having them go to prom together, but you can make Barbara anywhere between 26 and 36+ by the end of New Earth and I’m not sure anyone can say you’re wrong. I have Much Fear they’re going to try to de-age her again, though, with this potential Jason romance hanging in the air. 

And Alfred... look, man, I don’t know, he was 18 when he joined the British military, and that’s the extent of my understanding of how old Alfred is. 

And, you know, Duke didn’t exist in New Earth, and the Prime ages are all fucked to hell. Usually, I make Duke about a year or two younger than Tim, just because it kinda sounds right. 

tl;dr: By the end of New Earth, the Batfam is probably: Alfred (???), Bruce (41), Babs (26-36+), Dick (26), Cass (19), Jason (19), Steph (18), Tim (17), and Damian (10).
