Vernon stammers. “What— that— you— I mean to say—” Petunia shoots Lily a dirty look and then places a soothing hand on his arm. This seems to rally him. “So, you know a few magic tricks, do you? Am I supposed to be impressed?”

“Not especially,” James says, grinning. “That was a fairly bog-standard bit of Transfiguration. Of course, transfiguring inanimate objects into living thing’s always got its complications— it’s not really alive, you see, it’s just the illusion of life. The theory’s a bit murky, but there you are.”

From the looks on their faces he may as well be speaking Greek. Lily has to stifle a laugh.

At that moment the waitress returns bearing a tray loaded with their drinks; these she doles out, setting Petunia’s water on the beer mat that had recently been a butterfly. Petunia pushes it away from her with an expression of distaste.

“How’d you get here, anyway?” Petunia asks Lily. “Did you drive?”

“No,” Lily says, taking a sip of lager. “We Apparated. You know, when you—”

“Car at the mechanic’s, is it?” Vernon interrupts loudly, addressing James. “I suppose you drive some rusty, clapped-out old banger, don’t you?”

“Er,” James says, looking perplexedly at Lily. “What?”

“He’s asking what sort of car you’ve got,” Lily says heavily, sipping at her beer.

“Vernon’s got a Triumph Spitfire,” Petunia says glowingly, as if this is supposed to mean something to them.

“Oh, right— well, I haven’t got a car,” James says, shrugging. “I have got a fairly good racing broom, though, the Nimbus 1001— not the latest model anymore, but sound, wouldn’t change it for the world— does nought to seventy in under ten seconds.” He takes a swig of beer, oblivious to Vernon swelling with rage, a vein pulsing in his temple— from the look on his face Lily surmises that his Triumph Spitfire doesn’t do anything of the sort.

Wake up call (blurb)

Implied poly marauders if you squint but Jily centric

"Good morning my love." a dainty hand caresses your sleepy face as you wake.

"Mornin'." you mutter pressing yourself further into her touch. Lily always was the least hectic to wake up next to.

"How'd you sleep?" She presses softly if she asked you questions it made you think and therefore you couldn't go back to sleep.

"S'ok..." you try to keep things short as you close your eyes again

"Just ok?" Lily asks

"Mm." You grumble and she presses a chast kiss to your lips. Even half sleep you can taste the morning coffee on her breath. She'd let you sleep in which means someone else would be in to bother you shortly. You arm folded clumsily around her waist and you press another tired kiss to her coffee flavored lips.

"are you going to get up love?" She asks as you pull away.

"I don't feel like it."

"ok." She says and she seems to be leaving it at that. She never leaves it like that.

"are you o-" a cold hand grabs hold of your ankle and you are dragged from your warm bed into the hands of James Potter. He looks satisfied that his scheme worked and he's holding you vaguely reminiscent of how one would hold a 12 pound fish.

"Nonononooooo put me down!" you whine, as Lily laughs. You were suffering and she was giggling. How rude.

"Good morning!" James beamed. "Breakfast is ready."

"James!"

you ever step back and realize you're in a weird, semi-niche corner of the marauders fandom that's obsessed with jegulus and the slytherin skittles only to step back again and realize you're part of the larger marauders fandom which is also a weird semi-niche corner of the wider harry potter fandom...

like i'm already taken aback when i find a typical marauders fan account - like just gryffindor-centric, mostly jily and wolfstar content

and then i'm like,,, forget evan rosier there are people who don't even know who marlene mckinnon is- there are people who call remus "lupin" like, always - there are people who don't even know what "the marauders" means

fandom culture is so weird. if you see this you're probably in the first semi-niche corner i mentioned and i love us <3

(also just a note obviously this isn't meant to hate on or diminish anybody else this is just a silly little thing i think about sometimes. like the harry potter fandom is so chaotic and split up into a million subsections what is this)

2003 - Order of the Phoenix is released - WOLFSTAR

The case for R/S - an essay analysing all of Remus and Sirius' canon interactions and making the argument that they're canonically together

2004 - The Shoebox Project - wolfstar centric marauders era fanfic - Jily is popularised

(note: until this point wolfstar fics had mostly been set during the Harry Potter books timeline, with Sirius and Remus as adults)

2005 - Half Blood Prince is released - canon Remadora and the birth of bi Remus

2009 - The Life and Times - popular marauders era Jily fic

2010 - 2012 - the OG fancasts are popularised (Ben Barnes, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Taylor Johnson, etc)

2015 - An article about the Potter family reveals Euphemia and Fleamont Potter as James' parents (not Charlus and Dorea as was previously assumed)

2017 - All the Young Dudes - long marauders era fic in Remus' pov - Lesbian Marlene is popularised (which also marks the downfall of Blackinnon and the rise of Dorlene) and sarcastic Remus (influenced by his atyd characterization as an orphan. he's not always as hard/mean as he is in atyd, but it is a huge difference from the nerdy/shy Remus that was widely accepted before)

2019 - Welsh Remus becomes a thing (honestly I have no idea where that came from)

2020 - 2021 - All the Young Dudes is blows up on tiktok - Desi James is popularised - Peter also starts playing a bigger role in stories with an actual personality

2022 - Zeppazariel's fics and Choices - Jegulus focused fics, which led to Marylily, the Slitherskittles (and Rosekiller), and bi/pan James

other later marauder's fanon that popped up in the last five years

70s pop culture (music, smoking, fashion, etc.)

generally more diverse and socially aware characters (poc Mary and Dorcas, plus sized Lily, feminism, everyones queer and accepting) that tend to move away from their canon characterisations (James and Sirius were not bullies, but slightly immature pranksters. James is the Mom Friend and Sirius just has trauma. The technically death eater Slytherins aren't actually evil and blood supremacist , only affectionately mean and morally gray.)

note: personally I like what the fandom and characters have evolved into, however it has been criticised (especially by older fans) for being completely canon divergent, the characters being essentially OCs, and the 'glorification' and 'babygirlification' of bad people (I should also add that often times people who take this stance are often avid Snape fans/defenders)

You know what I love, when fandoms have fics that are fully flushed-out storylines that are occasionally better than the source material. Like No Paths Are Bound, and The Rigel Black Chronicles, were godsends.

I firmly believe that every fandom should have a fic that the whole fandom knows that takes place in-universe.

Like if I see another person say that the ultimate Klance fic is Dirty Laundry I'm gonna flip my shit, like no 😭😭, I want something that's long, in-universe, the fan-favorites survive, the characters are flushed out, and it doesn't completely forget about the other characters.

text talk by merlywhirls - this one is number two for a reason. amcah will always be my favorite wolfstar fic but this one is the DEFINITION of a comfort fic. texting au, sirius accidentally texts remus who's in the hospital, so many antics and shenanigans bro. it does get angsty at times fs but its so cute yall. ALSO FRANK AND ALICE CONTENT UGH

staying strangers by 3amandcounting - this one is SO SILLY it's another one of those texting fics but it's genuinely such a fun read. also it has desi james potter which is my personal favorite marauders headcanon (!!)

that's the art of getting by by sarewolf - oh GUYS this one is such a must read i swear to god, its a wolfstar (first remus, then sirius too) raises harry fic and it literally has everything. it'll rip you to pieces and fix you again and i had such a great (and terrible) time reading it

sweater weather by lumosinlove - HOCKEY AUUUUUU guys i dont know anything about hockey but this fic had me wanting to play. it has black brothers angst, gryffindor/slytherin rivalry, good ocs, physical trainer!remus and captain!sirius, its literally perfection.

beneath a big blue sky by eyra - guys. farmer remus. i dont think i need to say any more.

the horcrux hunt by lostmy_keys - this one is very regulus-centric but wolfstar is the main ship! its got some peak platonic moonwater, but it's also got some great wolfstar content. i was so invested in this one as it was coming out omg

pair of tossers with a cat by moonymoment - i am a moonymoment ENTHUSIAST and this fic is no exception, this one's just a bit of silly wolfstar, remus takes in a stray cat and sirius has beef with it. so cute, 10/10 would recommend

of memories and milk thievery by moonymoment - another moonymoment fav, remus and sirius are teddy's divorced fathers. so much silly beefing. theyre so petty and its fucking funny as shit but then randomly gets deep??? the marauders fandom cant stay away from angst for 2 secs but all in all such a funny fic i had such a silly time with it
