Thinking about how all three times I've watched "Evasive Action", the Sammy's Indecision Subplot has weirded me out and failed to grab me...

And I think I figured it out.

I think there was supposed to be a "Hey. I just killed a man" plotline there. The episode prior, Sammy and Yaz both disabled the control chips in the raptors--who promptly tore Kash apart.

The guy who had blackmailed Sammy and her family.

They probably wanted a "Revenge makes you Feel Empty" plotline for Sammy in that episode, but Standards and Practices said "Oh, you can't do that in this children's show, actually, the kids aren't allowed to kill people, and certainly can't say they did."

Which, admittedly...yeah, that would have been a little heavy.

So they had to cut it, whilst still on a time crunch. Heck, it could have even gotten to boards before that plotline got nixed. Then they needed to fill in three minutes of time in this episode, and the only thing that could really mesh was "Um, Sammy is upset at the group dynamic."

This is why her plotline felt unfulfilled: because they had something, but then they weren't allowed to do it. And, given a choice between "Let Sammy Be a Murderer" and "Let the Girls Kiss", we know which one they chose.

Granted, I still need to finish the rewatch and see how her dynamic with Kon plays out (especially because he's the Bigger Bad), but I would first like to submit further evidence to the jury:

-Darius and Sammy spend the episode that she should be processing her guilt together. They've had a few episodes before, but their main--and first--bonding moment was in the kayak. Wherein Sammy dropped this line:

Imagine if they'd called back to that line here. Sammy just killed a man to protect her family--the man who was also threatening her own family. When Sammy says she'd do anything, she meant anything. Sammy could be guilty, and Darius could say something like "You once said you'd do anything to protect your family...and you protected us." Then she could call it back to Kenji. Or something. Look, I'm speculating now, let's move on to EXHBIT B:

-Yaz and Sammy are not shown stabbing the batteries into the heads to disable the chips. If the "No, Sammy can't kill!!!" mandate was brought down on them, that might have been a shot they cut to comply. There might have even been more tie-in reactions. Note that Sammy's not looking enthused here. She's very hesitant. Maybe there would be a moment where she looks over at Kash, then steels her face and frees the raptor before running. But: The Action That Sammy Takes That Leads To Kash's Death is never shown on-screen, and whether it was for the purpose of the Reveal or not, she is Innocent by Children's Show Standards.

FINALLY, EXHIBIT C:

The reactions to Kash's death, the man who blackmailed Sammy's family, is...Brooklynn and Darius. Again. Yasammy frees the raptors, but Dinostar gets the reaction. Why? Why would that be? Perhaps because Sammy's expression was something setting up the next episode's plot. Vindication. Guilt. Pleasure. Maybe Yaz hugs her to her. Hides her face. Realizes it. I'm giving art and fic prompts here at this point. Whatever the case: we don't see Sammy's reaction to Kash's death. Which suggests--to me--that there was something they wanted to show, but couldn't, and decided to let it be an offscreen still-canon reaction that we just don't get to bear witness to.

Ladies, gentlemen, and the rest: I urge you to consider that the lack of resolution to Sammy's arc with blackmail is not the result of negligence in writing, but overambition that was shot down by the censors. They gave Sammy a Revenge Arc that was ultimately deemed Too Dark, so they gave her a rushed "I Am Not Going To Have Feelings About Anything Right Now" plotline, instead.

Percy is - and Vax is in no way exaggerating - absolutely covered in blood.

To be a bit more fair to him, it’s not human blood. Palid ooze clinging like gauze, bits of fatty tissue hitting the ground with a wet slap as Percy swipes at his face with disdain. Oh - no, it’s not all human blood. His arm is mangled good, navy wool thick with red. On the next wipe Percy pauses to cough into his glove. He pauses, wincing, and the angle is just right for Vax to spy that his palm is smeared with blood.

(Not his blood, a voice that sounds like Syldor’s sneers. That’s Vex’s, on loan in his veins. And he wasted it. So much of his sister spilled on ancient stone because Percy can’t be careful.)

“Percival, darling?”

It’s like she read his mind. Vex is already looping over, skirting around the frogmen and beholder and gods know what else that chimes as bones. Percy tries to lean up and out of the way, mumbling something Vax can’t quite catch. 

Whatever it is, she grabs it - and his lapels - before he can escape, her eyes wide. “You’re not -? Oh, Percy. Come here.” 

She sits him down on the nearest sarcophagus, fussing so much Trinket lumbers over to nose at each in turn. Vex and Percy’s chatter is consumed by the dark, by the sighs of the rest of the party as they heal up. Vax recognizes the new-growth green of Cure Wounds, wrapping like young roots around Percy’s forearm - grasping at nothing and failing to catch.

“So you're watching them? Totally not creepy,” says Kashaw. He’s the last person Vax wants to talk to - so he doesn’t, and keeps keeping an eye on things. 

Vex’s brow is furrowed something deep, fingers curling back before she exchanges something short with Percival before starting to unlace her bracer, even as Percy gently shoves her hand away. 

This isn’t the first time. It won’t be the last. Vax can’t help but feel sick, so fucking sick, seeing Percy’s fangs glint in the limp light. Worse than the gore, and the bones, and the sickening pressure of a lake and death herself hanging over their heads.

Clearly Kash stuck around too, because he murmurs, more carefully, “I thought vampires healed on their own? Huh.”

So did I.

“Kima!” Grog bellows. “Okay down there?” And Vax takes that as his cue to slip away.

literally every time I listen to grace, Ian listening to this album pops into my head 😭😭

who else do you think he can listen to? maybe lana(omg i headcanon that him and debbie talked about her music and she didn't expect that he knows her lmao), nirvana, the doors or something? I completely ignore his taste in the show too🫡🫡

oh anon i am so late to this and i apologize😭 i have no excuse other than laziness so… anyways!

ian definitely would like jeff buckley. i know that for a fact. i know that john wells showed us him listening to like… techno shit and lady gaga which is fine, but i don’t see him listening to that, i see everything that you listed, jeff buckley, lana del rey, nirvana, the doors, possibly oasis (based on carl’s shirt in 1x01), and maybe even radiohead (mickey canonically likes radiohead so…). 

i could see him liking grace, especially around season 1. like, another thing about ian and his “techno” music taste is that season 1 goes against it because we heard him listening to music in the van and he seemed to value music based on him saying he gave kash cds so that they would be interested in the same things. maybe he showed kash grace? i don’t know, i don’t want kash to know what grace is because i despise him but i could see ian loving that album. i don’t know if he would like sketches for my sweetheart the drunk just because i somehow feel like he wouldn’t have discovered it😭 like maybe later on around season 7 he would’ve listened to it, and if he did, he would like “nightmares by the sea” and “yard of blonde girls”, i think.

i personally associate ian with a few songs on grace, and if this post actually gets any attention and people want to know i could post about it like i did with mickey and nude by radiohead, but here are some songs that remind me of ian/i think ian would like (off of grace):

- lover, you should’ve come over; romantic song, i feel like ian would listen to it and think of mickey because he’s a fucking sap. he would have this song, “at last” (etta james, their wedding song) and some other love songs in a playlist titled “mickey” or something like that. this song i kind of associate with mickey in season 4/5, just because of how much of a hopeless romantic he is, but mickey would probably not listen to jeff buckley. early seasons ian would probably resonate with this song a lot, especially in season 2/3 when his love for mickey is growing stronger and it’s making him a bit miserable at the same time. the whole “so i’ll wait for you, love, and i’ll burn” thing reminds me of both of them, but especially season 2/3 ian because he was kind of always left waiting for mickey to the point where it started to really break him. just the intense feeling of love in this song is so ian and it’s just… such a beautiful song and also gallavich coded i can’t even

- forget her; ian’s feelings towards mickey in seasons 6-8. i think people often look down on ian for how he felt about mickey in those seasons, and i understand why, but i also feel so awful for ian because the way he acted was so clearly him just trying to forget. wanting to push down all feelings he had for mickey and pretend that the situation was something it wasn’t because he undoubtedly has avoidant attachment issues (which i want to talk about more in depth sometime). “don’t fool yourself, she was heartache from the moment that you met her” is so ian, there is no way he went into that relationship and thought it would all end up okay. whether we’re talking about ian or mickey being the “heartache”. because ian always expected mickey to get himself thrown away again, and ian always expected himself to fuck things up. so he goes out with other men and he convinces himself he’s okay when he’s not, that he’s over mickey when he’s not, he has this whole façade on and not many people could see through it, but the second mickey saw him in season 7 (or even in the visit in season 6) he saw through it. the lyrics “oh, i think i’ve forgotten her now” remind me of ian’s date with caleb or just the whole caleb thing in general where he’s clearly trying to be someone he’s not and saying things he wouldn’t have said.

- lilac wine; season 3 ian. but like, 3x06-3x11 ian. the downfall, the heartbreak, the start of it all. “i lost myself on a cool, damp night, i gave myself in that misty light, was hypnotized by a strange delight under a lilac tree”, really just reminds me of the aftermath of 3x06 on ian’s part. the way he started to change, and drink, and cry. he was hurt, physically and mentally, and i don’t know how to really explain these lyrics in association with him during that time they just are ian. the whole song is kind of just like, drinking and missing someone. “lilac wine is sweet and heady, where's my love? lilac wine, i feel unsteady, where's my love? listen to me, why is everything so hazy? isn’t that she, or am i just going crazy, dear?” ian at the wedding, or after the wedding. just 3x11 in general. he’s drunk/hungover throughout the entire episode, and it’s really the start of it all. i mean, i think that everything had started a few episodes before that, but to me, that was the first episode where i saw ian and was like “holy shit”. he missed mickey, he drank a lot, and he was just so fucking heartbroken.

- dream brother; this song always reminds me of ian when i listen to it and i don’t even know how to explain it. i think a big part of it could be the fact that it’s believed this song is about child abandonment, and not only that, but also self destruction. two things ian knows a lot about. “her green eyes blew goodbyes, with her head in her hands” reminds me so much of monica leaving in season 1. not only that, but the look ian gave her. the way his eyes looked everytime they landed on her. it’s so heartbreaking and that lyric really reminds me of that. another thing about this song is that it apparently was a warning for his (jeff buckley’s) friend not to walk out on his pregnant girlfriend because it reminded him of what his father did, which is why the song says, “don’t be like the one who made me so old”. to me, that’s ian to lip. specifically in 7x08, which is one of my favorite episodes/scenes ever and i have talked about it so many times. how the scene where lip grabs ian is a direct parallel to when frank headbutts ian, and how ian looks at lip the same way he looks at frank. how ian advises lip not to drink before ian goes off to prison, and like, i don’t know, how they both have always kind of worried about ending up like frank and monica, the people who hurt them both so much. “they're waiting for you like i waited for mine; and nobody ever came” just reminds me of how ian looked when monica hugged debbie and carl in season 1. when she says “please let me be your mommy again” you can tell that ian’s heard that 1000 things and he’s absolutely crushed.

i definitely think he would listen to lana del rey, and i intend on making a separate post about that (i also started a series on ao3 of shameless oneshots inspired by lana del rey but it’s on a quick hiatus because again, i’m a lazy fuck), he reminds me a lot of her album (or ep, i guess) paradise. especially the songs ride and cola. if he were to listen to her he’d definitely be a local but he would love the songs he knows. debbie definitely got him into her because i’ve literally made a whole in-depth post about why debbie is a lana fan (it’s basically canon, especially considering debbie’s age and her marina phase) and so she would introduce her to him. maybe ian has lana songs on that playlist i was talking about?? who knows

i could definitely see him liking nirvana, that’s pretty realistic and it makes sense for him. i made a post about ian and territorial pissings and i honestly could make a lot of connections between ian and nirvana, too. it’s worth mentioning that kurt cobain was bipolar and he had songs about it, and those songs always seem to remind me of ian (like lithium).

anyway… i said a lot more than i had intended, but like i said, i really like doing meta about characters regarding music so should i post more of that??

And given your recent blorbo-ing of Kash and Zahra, how that might impact Percy's dynamic with the later especially.

Do Zahra and Lilith teach Percy some tiefling culture basics? Thaumaturgy manners, or that one comic with instinctive tiefling head bonks? Tricks for hiding the horns under a hood ir shawl and making it look natural?

(Also, how Vex potentially sleeping with Zahra might throw a wrench in Kashra's development for a lil longer, maybe? 👀)

I think I've already said to you that contrary to my usual interpretation and belief, Percy and Lillith do bang in this AU bc Percy is dealing with some shit, not only trauma regarding the Briarwoods' attack and the loss of his family and home but also his own dysphoria due to his change of self, his utter loss of autonomy over how he presents himself and is percieved. And. Because of that baggage, he thinks that it's okay with Lillith because she's a tiefling. He's not passing on his corruption to someone else because she's already got that planar influence. He doesn't know why he's a tiefling now when he wasn't before and he's afraid that whatever taint infects him might infect others - but if someone's already a tiefling... it can't hurt them, right? They're used to it.

As for Zahra, I mean.

This Percy speaks Abyssal because of Orthax, and most tieflings speak Infernal. On the one hand this means Percy can listen in on the twins sometimes - they both speak Elvish and Abyssal (canon Percy knows the former and Celestial, in this he knows both and gains Abyssal after his change) - and on the other hand... this stands out as wierd to Zahra! Because she knows tieflings - Zahra, Lillith, Lillith's sisters (her other cousins) - and she knows they speak Infernal. So... it's definitely a first inkling for him that something's significantly usual what happened. Meanwhile for Zahra... I feel like it might make her wonder a little if that's why he's weird by tiefling standards?

She first finds out he speaks Abyssal because she goes to ask him, the other tiefling in the group, a very quiet, casual, in Infernal, "hey, everyone cool here?" kind of question. A "you know these people, they're not shitty about what we are, right? how worried/on alert do I need to be?" - and Percy doesn't understand her. He also made no move to ask her that in turn, which might be because he's familiar with most of the group but packed in with him speaking Abyssal and not Infernal just makes her think Weird and Wrong.

Thing is, Percy is pretty polite for the most part, so I can't really see him committing a social faux pas - he's so exacting about etiquette I can't see him really prying in a way that'd violate any unspoken rules of tiefling subculture - but because it's a new thing for him, I can see him just not observing it in ways that kind of blindside her? And for her, the way he keeps his tail tucked around himself when he doesn't need it for balance, the way he keeps his claws tucked away or under gloves, the way he seems uncomfortable with his tiefling aspects - that'd make her think of abuse (which she is canonically familiar with!) and wonder if he was taught to be ashamed of himself and kept isolated and that being the reason for his ignorance. So I can see her trying to gently teach him to be a bit more at ease with himself (and maybe some more tiefling subculture specific things, like getting a sense of each other's magic and when it's appropriate to use it, the little check in of "these people cool?", virtue names - though I don't think Zahra has one, or Lillith, but they are a tiefling thing).

This all said, on learning there's tiefling subculture etiquette Percy would absolutely absorb it like a sponge; boy gets so specific about social rules and is so careful not to fuck up. I really do get the impression that some of that is fuelled by anxiety (especially given how he splutters and gets awkward at other points - he likes to have a script, so I'd be shocked if he didn't have social anxiety or some overlapping neurodivergency).

As for that last point. Well.

As I figure it, Vex comes onto Zahra after the tomb because she wants somoene who isn't a mess over it and she wants to enjoy being alive! She doesn't want to have to hide her own emotions for sake of everyone else - she was he one who died, for fuck's sake, she should be allowed to feel her own emotions about it! And, well... yeah it hit her hard, but also she is really thrilled to be alive! (She is repressing hard, and has made her expressed opinion her only Allowed opinion.) And. Zahra is similar to Vex. They understand each other. So Zahra turns Vex down, but probably does talk to her a little, help Vex process things she was avoiding, and probably gives her hugs and cuddles. Vex does tend to seek to be alone when she's going through it, but I think someone who understands and doesn't judge her? I think she'd feel safe and also emotionally and pysically knackered, and so... sleep.

This probably does complicate things a bit for Kash though, at least until Zahra clears things up for him. I don't think it'd impede them much, but I do think it might prompt Kash to actually start to think about and process things more, having that tangible example of the kind of decisions one might make when not fully processing things.

After all, if he were to make the decision to take a risk with someone else rather than Z, because he's afraid of fucking up there - well, he'll probably carry that regret forever.

if i may be a bit serious here, on my very own blog, i think the reality of mickey’s situation is that he knew he was gay or he knew that girls didn’t do it for him, but he also very likely did try to “make a girl work.” his situation with terry was so violent & so dangerous that he probably would have gone a lot longer/the rest of his fucking life with a woman to stay alive/in good graces/employed/housed/whatever the fuck he needed from & with terry. not to mention all of the internalized homophobia.

The other thing I’d love to unpack with the fandom is how Ian’s understanding of his relationship to Kash pushed him towards Mickey. Ian to me is clearly battling between thinking he’s Kash’s white knight and finding Mickey braver and bolder than Kash. We the viewers know Ian was groomed and was a victim in that respect but I’m thinking about how he makes sense of Kash and how that affects his movement towards Mickey.

Kash was the best villain of Camp Cretaceous

You read that right! I firmly believe that Kash is the best villain of the show and I will gladly explain why.

For starters, we all agree that this season was more so focused on introspection of the characters rather than the dinosaurs themselves. Each character had some aspect of their personality and mind being pushed to the forefront and faced head on.

So what does Kash have to do with it.

Darius is technically the main character. Throughout the show we see this young boy have to face against horrors that other adults barely survive. Adults who, more or less, didn't have then intention to kill the children until they got in their way.

That wasn't Kash though. The villain is perfect is because Kash is something the crew had yet to face: a child.

Kash is a literal man child. The entire time his interactions with Darius is that a spoiled brat. He both hates Darius' presence but adores any admiration thrown his way. He both wants Darius gone but also can't stand the idea of the kid being out of his sight or control.

This isn't a scientist who has something better to do. This isn't military personnel who don't care what happens to the kids. And this isn't poachers were eager to kill another human being.

Kash did. Kash was fully prepared to kill Mae and he was willing to kill Darius is he wanted to. Kash had no hesitation with his actions. He was impulsive yet always plotting. Utterly driven by selfishness and the need to feel superior.

As weird as this sounds, Kash was the only villain thus far that I legitimately feared for Darius safety. The moments where Darius flinches or the times Kash was quick to anger highlight something that triggers memories.

This next part will have triggering topics so please read at your own discretion.

While I am not saying that Kash is one, most of his behaviors heavily remind me of groomers.

His actions read as someone who thrives off of control of those around him, especially those who seem easily manipulated. The entire time he held Darius hostage, it wasn't like the other times presented in previous seasons.

Normally, once the kid is out of sight those who were pursuing them just kept going unless they had something the adults want.

But Darius had nothing to offer. In the canon of the show, Darius presents himself as a shipwrecked survivor until his eventual escape. The moment with the elevator was very telling, as Kash's react was overblown and horrifying. At that point, Darius had been odd but nothing threatened. The entire time leading up to that moment he was pretending to sing his graces and yet Kash had a violent reaction and hinted at physical violence.

And this repeats countless times. I mean the scenes with the stressball had me stressed. There were moments where I thought he was actually going to punch him.

That's to say, Kash was the perfect villain for Darius specially. He was confronted with someone who acted like a child. In a way, it parallels his relationship with Kenji in season one. The younger of the two seemingly dragged along and caught in trouble thanks to the older one's actions.

As far as presentation and utter brutally goes, Tiff is still up there. But as far as being physically and mentally threatening, Kash is the best villain I have ever seen pulled off in kids media.

sexuality headcanon: well, mary elizabeth said that zahra didn't really have a preference for gender, and more was just attracted to souls, i think was the wording? so i usually go with pan for her, but to her the label doesn't really mean much.

favorite ship(s): BANGING POTS AND PANS TOGETHER. VEXHRA !!! IS MY FAVORITE RAREPAIR OF CR !!!!! it in no way exceeds my love for perc'ahlia, i will ALWAYS default to those two nerds, but i do have a soft spot in my heart for vex and zahra, and the flirting banter they have. i do usually have zahra as vex's amicable ex, with them still being best friends who are so incredibly affectionate that people forget they've broken up. like sometimes they'll just kiss On The Mouth, but like, platonically. this extends to the poly ship of vex/percy/zahra, because vex has a type and it's white haired, sassy, traumatized warlocks, and she deserves all of the love in the world. oh and i also love kash and zahra!!!! i think they're very sweet, and they're both so snarky i love it. and i love seeing that zahra was warmed kash up, even if it's only a little bit

brotp: vex and zahra!!! again!!!! as much as i love them as a possible ship, i also just fucking ADORE them as friends. they have one of the sweetest friendships, they get so excited when they see each other - and i think a lot of that is because of the warmth between mary elizabeth and laura, who are such close friends. regardless of the origin, their friendship just fills me with warmth. they are the wine moms who meet for brunch or evening drinks, post canon, and gush about their kids and grumpy husbands, and get utterly sloshed in the nearest tavern. also, they were both pregnant for the first time around the same time, so i imagine they spent a lot of time together, helping each other out. (i also think, after vecna and vax, zahra was a refreshing face to see who felt... just a little more disconnected from her brother and missing him. not completely, she was there when the bargain was struck, but it's a bit less sharp - especially since zahra's grief is not as deep as the rest of vox machina's

happy headcanon: i’d like to think that, post-canon, she helps vex spearhead programs to help with displaced children - those with parents who have died, and those who have been removed from households with bad parents. vex is on the legal side of the operation, pushing for funding and legislation from the council, while zahra is on the ground, gathering funding and support. she also helps to run one of the homes in vasselheim - and, if she’s also teaching the kids magic on the side, no one’s complaining

angsty headcanon: i imagine that, when zahra found out she was pregnant, it scared the shit out of her. the whispered one is ascending, the world is in turmoil, and she hasn’t had any positive examples of a parent in her life. i also think she was a little scared that kash, known for being aggressive and abrasive, would end up like her own father - and she hated that she had that fear, because she loves kash, and he’s changed, but... still. it’s a fear that wraps its cruel arms around her until the child was born (children? i forget if them having twins was canon or headcanon). luckily, though, zahra had no reason to fear - their baby is the only person who can make kash melt even more than she can

random headcanon: i think we as a fandom have unanimously agreed that zahra and gwen bond in some way shape or form, and i wholeheartedly subscribe to this. but i Also think that zahra has an incredibly soft spot for vesper. her and kash's twins grew up playing with vesper, and zahra watched as vesper slowly figured out why her parents would go glassy-eyed sometimes, or why they clutched her so close at others (not just the tight grip of an ex-adventurer who’s seen a lot of shit, but the tight grip of someone who is used to their family being taken away, or has lived half their life thinking themself to be in a fever dream, and is expecting everything to disappear when they open their eyes). and zahra sees how vesper picks up on it so soon, when she’s still so young. vesper, not any older than five, doesn’t even understand it, but she knows something is there. and zahra knows that percy and vex don’t want her to carry that weight around - zahra doesn’t want her to carry that weight around - so she gives a little extra attention to vesper, keeps an eye out for her

general opinion: i love her. i love her so much. she’s my favorite guest pc, and she’s one of my favorite side characters, if not my favorite. mary plays her with so much energy and personality, and i love her friendship with vex, and i love just... all of her. i fucking adore her. she’s so good for vex, and she’s so good for the energy of the table, and i just. i love her. so much. thank u for ur service, mary elizabeth mcglynn

Angsty Gallavich Prompts - Part 2

Part 1

Prompts for fics, headcanons, or discussion. Interpret these however you like and feel free to use them as just a jumping off point, you don’t have to stick to the exact prompt! Btw, if anything along these lines has been written, please do recommend them to me!

These range from light angst to heavy angst. There isn’t anything particularly graphic in these prompts, but there are direct references to various canon subjects which some may find triggering, so please take care.

Post s7, Ian and Mickey are unable to stop dreaming about one another. Their dreams are a mixture of what could of been, as well as nightmares about what’s happening to the other one. And it all seems so real, so much so they both begin to suffer from insomnia.

Kash is arrested for statutory rape of a minor, the police investigating think there might have been previous victims. They go back through the records of Kash’s businesses, and interview everyone who worked for him as a minor. This includes Ian and Mickey, who have settled happily into married life on the West Side when the police come knocking.

Turns out the guy at the gym in their West Side apartment is a personal trainer who has no problem with giving his unwanted opinion about people’s bodies. He makes an offhand comment to either Mickey or Ian about helping them lose their pandemic weight if they hire him as a trainer. While neither of them need it, it brings up some insecurity that the other one helps them to get over.

Ten years ago, a woman appeared in a small town, just outside of Chicago, suffering from amnesia. One day, after years of tiny flashes of memories that don’t make sense, she finally remembers who she is - Laura Milkovich. The last thing she remembers clearly is fighting with her husband Terry, threatening to go to the cops and to run off with her kids. When she heads back to Chicago, desperate to know what has happened in the past ten years, she learns some shocking things - Terry is dead, her kids have scattered, and apparently they were told she had run off and then died. It takes her awhile, but soon she finds one of her children - Mickey.

What if Mandy had come into the Milkovich house, through the back door, at the exact same time Terry did in 3x06? She sees her father attack Ian, horrified and terrified at the ferocity of the attack, she hides just out of sight and films what happens next to Mickey on her phone. Angry and disgusted, she deletes everything off her phone apart from the video - showing Terry attacking Mickey and then the aftermath with Svetlana - and hands it into the police, anonymously, with a note explaining what she witnessed. The video is grainy but clear enough to ID Terry, and the audio is perfect, it’s enough to arrest Terry - and along with the various drugs and guns found in the house when he’s arrested - it’s enough to send him to jail for a long time. Even though he’s gone, things aren’t so simple for Ian, Mickey, and Mandy.

It’s stressful running a business, let alone a new business during a pandemic where everything is either shutting or struggling to recover. Ian and Mickey are arguing a lot, they are getting annoyed over the smallest things. Something needs to change, they both know it, but what can they do to get back on track? The idea of a romantic weekend away comes up, it’s tight but they can afford it, but how romantic will it be if they’re both starting off the weekend pissed off?

Mickey and Ian are offered some very powerful weed from one of the dispensaries they work for - they are told to be very careful and to only smoke a tiny bit at a time, but they ignore this advice and smoke it normally, and either one or both of them has a bad trip.

Frank and Terry are both dead, but that doesn’t stop them from causing problems. One day, something random or seemingly normal triggers Ian or Mickey to remember a long forgotten painful memory from their childhood concerning something Frank or Terry did.

Sometime after the events of 3x06, Mickey is falsely accused of a crime that could see him tried as an adult and landed in prison. He has no alibi for the time of the crime - except of course, he does, he and Ian had been together all day. But there is no way he can admit that because if Terry found out he’d been with Ian again, it would be the end for both of them. Ian, however, is not going to let Mickey go to jail for a crime he didn’t commit.

The term PTSD has come up before - it’s something that Mickey has heard over the years. He’s always pushed it away, shrugged it off. He doesn’t need any help. There’s nothing wrong with him. He’s fine. But marriage changes things. Moving to the West Side changes things. Life is different and Ian goes to therapy like it’s no big deal. Mickey decides that maybe he can try therapy too? Telling himself it’s for Ian, and their marriage, and their life together. Maybe for himself too, but he doesn’t want to see that as the most important reason. At least, not yet.

Gallavich Star Wars fic you say?? I know you said you don’t plan to write it but do you have any ideas you’d be willing to share?

Sure! Keep in mind that I no longer know much of anything real about the Star Wars universe, and what little knowledge I did have is no longer canon anyway. It would be highly incorrect in most ways, lol. And I would love to write it eventually, I just really need to stop starting new things until I finish something.

From my minimal notes (I say minimal but it's like, a whole synopsis, but I figure it's unlikely enough to happen in a timeframe you'd remember that I might as well throw it out there):

Ian is a youngling taken from his family at a young age for training, almost ready to be a padawan. Mickey is a force-sensitive youth too old to be officially accepted, having been cast aside by his family once he started showing abilities, and is only allowed at the temple to learn control so he doesn't hurt anyone.

He and Ian meet because Mickey is skulking around where he isn't supposed to be, and start sneaking training time together. They're fast friends, until Ian is chosen as Padawan by Jedi Master Kash--which Mickey firmly disapproves of for multiple reasons.

Ian leaves with Kash for their first mission, and when he comes back, Mickey is gone.

Down the road, and who knows what happens in between, they meet again when Ian's mission has him crossing paths with a new smuggling ring. A smuggling ring headed by none other than Mickey Milkovich.

They clash, of course. Things happen. Their personal journeys come to a head--Ian fighting Kash for the right to advance to Jedi Knight, Mickey fighting his own father for control of the smuggling world--and despite their complicated history, they help each other through it.

Gallavich endgame, obviously, wherein my tiny one-shot from May 4th would be a conceivable follow-up.

heyo i've been watching the eps in real time, but i only got around to watching the gallavich hall of shame today and i loved all of it except the beg which i was really hoping you could help me with cuz i've been extremely upset by it (literally crying oops). so, why would the writers possibly use the phrasing "piece of my heart" and act like what ian felt for his other bfs is in any way comparable to mickey, only on a much lesser level? cuz we've seen it play out that that's just false [pt 1]

Hey! Sorry about not getting to this right away -- real life has been extreme today -- but I wanted to make sure to reply to this ASAP because it clearly bothered you a bunch. This ask has several parts and I’m going to pull the questions from the others so that I can best answer. And I may sound a little glib because I know this really, really bothered you, so I want to make it clear: I completely respect your feelings about this... but I don’t think the show was thinking about how people who love Gallavich would feel about that line. Because they had a brief and it was “write a clip show.” 

First: why would the writers make ian flat out tell mickey that doesn't have his whole heart WHEN THEY'RE MARRIED for god's sake.

So that they’d have a fight through which they would introduce themed clip packages that had already been decided on. 

Second: i'm just so confused and upset about what the writers were trying to accomplish with this?

Completely understandable that you’d be confused by it, because the primary thing they were looking to accomplish was to have snippets of conversation that would introduce themed clip packages. 

Third: why'd the writers chose such vague flowery BS wording for this? plz help me get it

Because nothing in the Hall of Shame episodes can actually add up to anything significant, because they’re clips shows that were put together entirely because Showtime needed to fill time while the show -- which is still shooting -- finishes up. 

A few things about the Hall of Shame episodes. The first and the most important: It’s pretty much impossible to write a good clip show. They are creative black holes. I shudder to think how much time the writers were even given to do these things. They all -- All! -- exist solely to fill time.  So it’s always “The Golden Girls sit around a table and eat cheesecake and then reminisce about all the times they ate cheesecake.” One of the very worst episodes of Star Trek: TNG exists solely because they ordered another episode at the last minute and it’s -- you guessed it! -- A clip show. The best -- and I use that term loosely -- clip shows are the ones where the have some Voice of God narrator say “Mickey and Ian are the romantic heart of the show, but they don’t always get along! Cue clip package where Mickey and Ian fight about stuff. Voice of God: “But they sure do enjoy making up!” -- Cue clip package of Ian and Mickey making out. 

That still sounds pretty terrible. The best idea for a Shameless clip show is to do some sort of Frank-at-the-bar-talking-shit thing and I’m sure they thought of that and then I'm sure they were like “Fuck. We can’t spare Bill for that kind of time.” -- and then they had to do this. This whole thing is born of scarcity -- of time, of means and of new things to put on the tv -- And given the choice, having seen what came out of it, I think I opt for what they did because I truly do believe the Mickey gifs that the Fiona one produced have restorative properties and I am very grateful that they exist. 

The Hall fo Shame episodes giveth, and they taketh away. So my advice, in how to approach them is just this: 

They aren’t canon

Nothing that happens in them matters

But the parts you like can be as real as you want them to be

So take what you like and throw the rest away

But again, this might be easier said than done, so let me dig a little deeper into what bothers you so much about this line in the context that it happens. 

The 87% line is patently ridiculous and I reject its premise. Love is not finite. You do not divide it between people. You love the people you love, the way you love them, and if someone else showed up you’d love them in whatever way you love them and that would not lessen the love you feel for anyone else. You do not suddenly love your child 50% less because you had another child. That is insane. You just love the other child also. 

That said, the 11 seasons in which we have seen Ian love Mickey more than he loves anything -- his freaking words -- cannot be undone by one line of dialogue in a clip show. First, because clip shows are innately flawed, but also because 11 seasons are more important than one line of dialogue. Even ONE episode of Not a Clip Show is more important than what happens in a clip show. Every single episode of Shameless is trying to do something much more valid and important with the characters than introduce a clip package. 

This problem is also not restricted to the Gallavich episode -- People do a whole bunch of stuff in the HoS episodes that they’ve never done on the show. Carl and Debbie don’t punch each other in the face. Lip doesn’t completely and totally discount every single thing his sister did to keep a roof over their head. Mickey doesn’t act like Ian’s sexuality is a lifestyle choice and Ian is smart enough to know that Mickey Milkovich -- who he loves more than anything -- doesn’t want hear about the mathematical breakdown of how much Ian cares about Other Men. 

now i desperately need the writers to fix this and say mickey has ian's whole heart. 

This is probably not going to happen because I don’t think Actual Shameless considers that to be a thing that happened. On Actual Shameless Ian watched Mickey beat Ned up and then ran away with him when the cops showed up looking DELIGHTED that Mickey had beaten Ned up. On Actual Shameless Ian can barely stand to have Kash touch him once he’s been with Mickey, because Mickey is all he wants. On Actual Shameless Ian’s most viable non-Mickey relationship crumbles the second Mickey shows up because there’s just no comparison for him. Ian loves Mickey. He doesn’t stop. If something happened to Mickey he wouldn't look vaguely disconcerted and then get into an argument with some third party about whether or not it’s valid to be weirded out when someone you had sex with dies. You know that line, “show, don’t tell”? There’s reason that’s considered better storytelling -- because the stuff you show is the stuff that the audience feels and experiences. If Ian had said he loved Ned in any capacity I would have laughed out loud, because what I was shown was Ian mostly hanging out with Ned because he was missing Mickey, wanted a distraction, liked room service and the occasional nice gift, and... it made Mickey jealous. None of that was about Ned. 

And in the end: Ned’s dead, baby. Long live Gallavich. 

(it would of course be very nice if Ian would tell Mickey he has his whole heart, partly because it’s true, but also because Mickey deserves to hear these sorts of things, and we all want Mickey to be happy. And I do think Ian probably does tell Mickey that, after the clip show is over -if we acknowledge that this happened at all- because ultimately Ian’s whole life is about Mickey. Mickey is all he ever talks about. Even when he’s being pissy it’s all about how things are going with Mickey and how they are GOING to be going with Mickey. How he feels about his job, how he feels about himself, what his life plan is -- all depends on what is up with Mickey. Mickey is everything to him, and I’m going to assume Ian both shows and tells Mickey that in key ways, because Mickey sure seems happy in the Fiona HoS.) 

Anyway -- I don’t know if that helps at all, but that’s my take on this mess. Thank you for asking!
