Time flies when you're doing almost nothing for five days, and the day back has been brutal. Plus the view analytics for this post are pathetic today, probably because my paid SEO is acting up again and I didn't announce what it was going to be so that I could be spontaneous and "surprise you."

Watching shitty horror movies because I am bored easily entertained: The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014 Sequel?)

MINOR SPOLIERS AHEAD!

This was rated 66% Rotten Tomatoes and 5.6/10 on IMDb and for the life of me I can't figure out why.

This film is not presented as a sequel to it's 1976 counterpart as much as it's seen as a reaction to it. The film from the 70s, based on the actual TexArkana moonlight murders of 1946 by The Phantom Killer, was featured and spoken of in the movie. By some characters, it's even referred to as disrespectful to the victims - what would that make this then?

Without revealing too much, the plot twist was - to me anyway - unexpected, but overall uninteresting. I didn't see the reasoning, and by the end of the film it seemed like they were just killing characters off for a 'shock factor' that wasn't truly there.

The actors themselves were pretty good, there was no terrible terrible acting but nothing and nobody in particular stood out to me. They gave the main character a Tragic Backstory™ to try make her more interesting, but to be honest it was a bit irrelevant and didn't add anything to her character, and I don't see how it affected how she acted in anyway towards the main plot.

To be honest, this movie managed to consistently bore me - unlike most bad horror movies, that at the very least entertain you with how terrible they are, this one kind of just bores you to death as it entices you with it's being based on true events only to wean off that line of interest and try to create its albeit original but terrible plot that is loosely based upon the past.

Gratitude Journal Entry (7/18/24)

Today I'm Grateful For:

*I finished my two books today :-) The first one (Cat of Many Tails) has put me off Ellery Queen books in the future, but the second (Suicide Med) has made me a tentative lover of Freida McFadden. I say 'tentative' because while I've really enjoyed the two books I have of hers, I don't want to become a full-out fan and risk being disappointed. Save for a few special series and Simone St. James, I don't typically read books by the same author.

*Despite feeling kind of rotten tonight (allergies and my antibiotic) I had a nice night. MY parents went to a movie with some church friends (Disciples in the Moonlight) so I had the house to myself for about 7 hours and I spent that time reading and watching movies. I watched 'Bait' but didn't really care for it (for some reason I really like shark movies as well as disaster movies) as well as 'Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves', which I've been wanting to watch for a while and which I really enjoyed.

*That my days are basically back to normal. I no longer spend hours on a single poem, so my day is more open, which I'm very pleased about.

Something I'm Proud Of:

It's really hard finding something I'm proud of every day, but I always try to find something, no matter how small. Today, I'm proud that I got my desk cleaned off and relatively organized. I hate a messy desk, but I've not felt well enough to clean it off.

Tomorrow I'm Looking Forward To:

Finishing my last 2 books and catching up on my reading.

The movie follows Chiron through three stages of his life – childhood, teens and adulthood – and shows how the various people in his life shaped him.

More of a slice of life than anything else, the story is chopped up to show Chiron throughout his life. With dealings in crime and hate, Chiron is a victim of an addict mother and no father to depend on. His life is spent having to live with bullies from childhood to a teenager and a decision made in high school shapes his adult life.

Nobody dies but it is unclear if Chiron and Kevin get together in the end.

I was curious about this movie as it won a lot of awards when it came out, but it is a little slow paced with a lot of scenes that just show characters staring or going somewhere, not really adding to the story. I do appreciate what it did for the media though, as it portrayed a gay black man and the struggles he faced. I just hoped for a more in-depth look at Chiron’s life and relationships. It was interesting to see the struggles people surrounded by drugs had but I feel like it didn’t show enough. What is shown between Chiron and his mother is heartbreaking and you do feel bad for him, as no child should experience it. I also felt there was a lot of attention on Juan, a drug dealer who was a brief father figure to Chiron, but his story was left unfinished. He sees that what he does hurts people like Chiron but nothing comes of it. And he never shows up again once Chiron is a teenager and it’s unclear what happened to him exactly. If Chiron just avoided him or if Juan died. I would have liked to see Chiron rise up from the drugs and crimes and become something good, but he ends up in the exact same shoes that ruined his mother’s life. I wish there was more to the ending as well. Did Chiron leave the crime life and be with Kevin or did they part ways? I really don’t like up-in-the-air endings, as it is the writer’s job to finish it and not the audience. I really wanted to like the movie but I was just left a little disappointed.

Mom’s Thoughts: This started pretty slow and I had trouble getting into the story. Very little dialogue, very little action and not much scenery to break up the monotony. I had hoped there would be more insight into Chiron’s psyche, though we see to some extent what his early years were like--neglect from his crack-addicted mother and bullying at school. There were scenes I felt could have been left out or cut short as they added nothing to the story, taking what time they occupied to give the viewer a more in depth look at Chiron’s personality. I had hoped for an opportunity to understand what life as a black gay man might be like, but I guess I’ll have to look elsewhere. There was very little time devoted to Chiron’s interactions with other gay men, even Kevin who he more or less hooks up with at the end. Even then we’re left up in the air as to whether the two men have more than a friendly reunion. Had the story been developed deeper, I might have been tempted to watch it again at another time, but as it is, I’ll pass.

So excited to hear about your interest in the trio!! They all hold very special places in my heart, so I love to hear when other people find them as well!

However, although I consider Apollo(n) to be my spiritual father and Leto to be my spiritual grandmother, the relationship I have with Artemis is an intersection of mother, sister, best friend, love of my life, spiritual mistress, queen, ect...so I will be approaching this from a more Artemis focused perspective lol. Hope that's okay!!

First, I would strongly recommend reading She Who Hunts: Artemis: The Goddess Who Changed the World by Carla Ionescu for a really solid, comprehensive overview of her worship. Understanding her history and domains can be very helpful in understanding Artemis as a goddess. Apollo(n) and Leto are featured in it, but mostly in relation to her.

Theoi.com is a good overall resource, but I would recommend sticking to 'scholarly' or peer-reviewed sources as much as possible when trying to get historical information about her cults, worship, and associated religious practices. The same goes for Apollo(n) and Leto.

In terms of personal practice stuff, it took me years to really forge the connection and relationship I have with her how. She can be prickly in certain ways. Her energy is as intense and wild as anything I've ever experienced. Early on, it felt like getting close to a roaming wolf or a hunting lioness. But once you bridge that gap, she's as protective and loves with as much ferocity as a mother bear. Apollo(n) and Leto were a bit less distant, even in the early days - at least for me. So take your time. Don't rush things with any of them, but most specifically not with Artemis lol.

In terms of activities/stuff she likes, I can list some random, everyday ways I connect with her!

- Being out in the moonlight, walking with the nightroaming critters 🌙🦇

- Going on nature walks, hikes, or just sitting outside! Touching grass really works haha

- Work on healing your 'inner child' through shadow work, but mostly importantly through therapy if it's accessible

- Taking care of and/or spending time with animals

- Reading her myths

- I also love connecting everyday stuff with her - albeit in a UPG kind of way lol. I associate the movies Beasts of the Southern Wild and Princess Mononoke with her as well as A Children's Bible by Lydia Millet and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shriely Jackson and that's all super UPG! What matters most is fostering a relationship with a good foundation. As cliche as it sounds, it really can be about the journey rather than the destination when it comes to deity work. I'm a bit lost on what to watch right now, but I have this huge gaping hole in my chest that needs to be filled with some good BLs. I absolutely adore Old Fashioned Cupcake, To My Star, We Best Love (the drunk confession scene had me reeling). I'm not a huge fan of Thai BLs, because of the way it's shot and the humour, but I did really enjoy Not Me, 1000 stars and Bad Buddy. Do you have any recs?
