My Writer's DNA // A.K.A. My Favorite Tropes This is the kind of stuff you can expect me to write and reblog with reckless abandon. If you send me a prompt, odds are it'll get infused with one of these:

Found Family: My absolute beloved. Give me a mismatched crew of traumatized weirdos, emotionally constipated soldiers, or reluctant heroes who bicker endlessly but would burn down the world for each other. The more dysfunctional the bonds and the more they refuse to admit they care, the better.

Hurt/Comfort & Whump: The absolute cornerstone of this establishment. This is the whump-to-hurt/comfort pipeline, and the pipes are clean and the water pressure is phenomenal. Let's put our blorbos through the emotional and physical wringer. Break a bone, catch a nasty non-magical flu, get captured, have a full-blown panic attack about it later. Why? So another character can find them, patch them up, and deliver the quiet, tender care they both desperately need. This is the good stuff.

Angst With a Purpose: I'm not here for pointless misery. I'm here for the good, artisanal angst. The pining, the yearning, the miscommunication that actually makes sense, the painful self-realizations, the "I'm not good enough for you" speeches that get proven wrong. But it has to lead somewhere—usually to one of the tropes mentioned above.

Enemies/Rivals to Lovers: The delicious, slow-burn knife-to-throat-to-kissing pipeline. I want the tension, the begrudging respect, the moment one of them realizes "oh no, they're hot AND competent," and the eventual chaotic collapse into feelings.

Canon Divergence / Fix-It Fic: That one canon event that broke me? No it didn't. In this house, we have ✨creative differences✨ with canon. I am the benevolent and sometimes wrathful god of my own AUs, and I am here to fix what was so cruelly broken.

There Was Only One Bed: The classic. The legend. It will never not be funny or fraught with delicious tension. Bonus points if one of them is an absolute blanket hog.

I will whump my blorbos until the heat death of the universe, but at the end of the day, they are all getting tucked into bed, possibly with a cup of tea and a heated blanket. I'm allergic to tragic endings and I do not write major character death.

ANGELA JANE. i know we don't get to know much in the way of cannonical characterization but i have read a lot of fics about her. i think the most influential has to be boy wonder, which is a wonderful how-angela-and-young-patrick-met fic unfortunately trapped on the horrible formatting of fanfiction dot net, but every time i think of angela i think of this fic and it very deeply informed my love for her character.

BEAST Atsushi

: ugh. something about how he is literally how Atsushi would be like if Atsushi was in the PM. There's just something that attracts me to him. Like most characters in BSD, he isn't evil and doesn't enjoy the things he does. He's deeply traumatized. He has a shy-kind personality but is placed in the PM where he's made to be a murderer. Interestingly, he isn't as obsessed with BEAST Dazai's approval as Akutagawa was with Canon Dazai (maybe bc Dazai liked Atsushi more? idk..) But BEAST Atsushi has sm going for him and I'm curious about his life after BEAST. I'd like to see more of it ❤️ (don't even get me started on the fanarts of BEAST Atsushi meeting lit. anyone in the Canon world).

2. Verlaine

: This bad boy can fit so much trauma inside him. What makes humans human? What makes him worthy of human dignity when he's just a bunch of codes? Honestly his thoughts and existential crisis is tragic. The fact that he wanted to raise chuuya in the countryside too 😭 and how he helped Chuuya save the world because deep down he knew one person who he thought deserved to live. How he hasn't moved on from said person. How he trains PM assasins to become weapons for the Port Mafia even though he's gone through the same thing. How he (both metaphorically and physically) isn't in the light because he's literally been rotting in a basement for 6 years. No friends. No family. Nothing outside that interests him. With no purpose other than teaching because Rimbaud used to teach too. No one in the mafia can reach him emotionally. He could be like BEAST Dazai tbh. I can see it. Except rimbaud is dead so Verlaine just decided to.. stay in a basement and rot. Someone bring him out of there please 😭😭

(also in another version of BSD I thought of in my head, I gave him a sort of backstory so that increased my personal attachment lol)

And speaking of the guy Verlaine misses...

3. Rimbaud

: This guy... has so much love to give. Idk much about his past but he was a government spy. As I've seen others mention, He may have had to abandon family members for his job. By the time he met Verlaine, he must have been so lonely that he decided to pour all his love into this one partner whom he intended to be with forever. So. Dang. Selfless. Got betrayed by Verlaine. Still went to hell and back for him. Also Verlaine disliked him while he was still alive so there must have been so many moments where he got hurt by Verlaine (like that one birthday gift 😭) but he still kept trying to be a good friend and doing everything to make Verlaine happy. Even when he got amnesia, Verlaine was the one thing he remembered. He didn't even expect Verlaine to apologize!!! Like?? Instead HE was the one who apologized for not understanding Verlaine. He held no grudges whatsoever. My gosh. That's true love right there. He gave Verlaine his all and expected nothing in return. Even when Verlaine betrayed him or didn't appreciate him or was mean to him, he cared sm. Even in his dying moments, his main concern was Verlaine. ouch.

Besides that, he's VERY cool. His ability slays (literally) and his long black hair is just 😫✨

Rimbaud should've picked me instead. I would've treated him much better than Verlaine did 🤭🙄 /j

4: Mori Ogai

OHHHH~ controversial character alert ‼️

Hehe alright. *cracks knuckles*

I initially didn't have much feelings for Mori. I thought he was a pedo and hated him as a villain (cause of how much of a threat he was and what he did to the characters) but I also didn't think about him a lot. And it was hard for me to grasp his character.

Thankfully though, the BSD fandom made me change my mind after a while 🤭

@the-boss-of-the-port-mafia made this amazing compilation of Mori analyses that made me appreciate him more.

Long story short, tumblr made me realize 2 things:

a. Mori may not actually be a pedo

b. He's more emotional than he lets on

anyways onto my rambling abt Mori 😭

I like him. I think he's badass. He's giving anti-hero vibes ✨ and he's also tragic in a way because he's doing what he thinks is best for Yokohama and the PM even if he has to be ruthless about it. At heart, he has good intentions. He hates war. He hates needless violence (he disliked the previous bloodthirsty boss; suggested that his death would leave to even more violence during the guild arc; has not once been shown to enjoy committing violence for kicks and giggles; etc). He manipulated Yosano because he thought it was the optimal solution and would result in them winning. He planned Oda's death because again, it was the optimal solution and would result in the mafia winning + less casualties. If there's a conflict, Mori is the guy who will pick the fastest, most convenient solution even if it means getting his hands dirty. He'll always pick the lesser evil with no hesitation.

While characters like Fitzgerald/Dazai/Junichiro would sacrifice the world to save their loved ones, Mori would sacrifice his feelings/loved ones to save the world (not that he's extremely attached to anyone. this guy is very lonely lol. His face when he told Koyou that she could leave the PM and he wouldn't be able to do anything about it shows just how much he's resigned to losing people.)

That being said, it does hurt him when he loses people.

This post by @hina-has-no-life explains very well his regret towards Dazai and Yosano 😭

In BEAST, he didn't have to play the role of the mafia boss hence, he showed his softer sides and treated Atsushi like a son, even admitting that he regrets not being able to help Dazai.

so..yeah. There's something interesting about a villain who forces himself to ignore his emotions for the sake of doing 'the greater good.'

Yes, Mori is manipulative, makes millions from exploiting people via the PM, has done many bad things, will continue to do bad things --but he does have a heart (even if he constantly ignores it lol).

It's also worth mentioning that apparently the management in Yokohama is so bad, the Port Mafia (a literal criminal org) is the one responsible for keeping the crime rate in check (considering bsd Yokohama gets bombed like every month tho, Ig that checks out 😭)

Anywy. Mori. yeah, he's shades of grey (the darker side). Like Dazai, he can act like a silly uncle sometimes. His backstory is so cool with lots of potential.

From military doctor (holy hell. military doctors in history are usually involved in a LOT of shady things) to an underground doctor (uhm. how and why?) to finally, the boss of the Port Mafia.

so interesting. and so much potential.

The quote, "I must be cruel to be kind" suits him quite well.

About the mafia though - I do wonder what he does being filthy rich 🤭 besides the constant ignoring of emotions, I'm sure he must have some greed or ambition in there. That makes him even more nuanced imo.

I hated Dazai at first cause I felt he was overrated. While watching the anime, I was annoyed that Dazai seemed to be able to solve everything and that no one could defeat him and that he was presented as this 'untouchable figure' of sorts. I'm like, 'WHY DOES HE KEEP WINNING' as if he's omniscient or something like a deus ex machina 😭

overtime, I grew to like him tho (mostly because of Oda LOL 😂)

BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT

his character is interesting (especially in the LNs. I think he's more nuanced in there than in the anime).

I like how he's clearly hiding his heart from everyone around him. He doesn't open up to anyone. Doesn't reveal his plans unless he deems it necessary. manipulates team mates in certain situations (ex: what he did to aku and atsushi). continues to act like a jerk (messes kunikida's plans for fun; belittles akutagawa, etc.)

He's a manipulative jerk with little empathy for strangers but he's trying to fight for the good side. he's trying to save people. he's trying to be better. (and he is actually being better).

Reminds me a lot like Jouno tbh haha.

he's also a little menace with a dark but goofy side to him.

In the BSD rewrite fic I have in my little head, I like to imagine PM Dazai as somewhat like Mahito from jjk. (In the sense that he's an absolute nightmate, truly the "Demon prodigy" whose "blood is blacker than the mafia" but who also has a very childish feel to him).

Ik it's implied that Dazai did in fact commit atrocities like killing innocent people, killing mafia suboordinates who were subpar, torturing people, etc. but I'd like to see more of that. I'd like to see PM Dazai actually hurting someone the audience cares for and being evil instead of it just being told to us by the narrator/other characters.

Like yes, we got bits of his 'evilness' in SB, Dark Era and BEAST but Ig I just want more of that on focus 🤭

like, don't just tell me 'His blood is blacker than the mafia.'

Make me FEEL chills from reading him; make me think, 'oh this kid is really a devil spawn. I hate him' before moving onto dark era and making me surprised that 'dang. i never thought i could feel bad for this dude.'

idk it's prob just a preference I have. 😅

Same with the PM too. I wish we got to see them doing more of their exploitative work to better understand it when characters describe them as 'the demons of Yokohama' or something along those lines. Cause from season 1-3 (of the anime), they kind of...felt less threatening? Season 4-5 was quite a ride though.

ANYWAY MOVING BACK TO DAZAI

The face of BSD. Mr. Bungou 🤭🤭 I think he's a very cool and interesting character. I want him to cry lol.

I want him to LOSE IT in the main manga before the series ends and see what happens.

The animation team continues to impress me with the animation and in this movie more so than the first cause of how they made each universe feel

I have a surgical scar on my lower abdomen from an ovarian tumour removal about three years ago now - essentially a C-section scar - and I have some cool stuff to share! Idk how much of this applies to other types of scars, but at least you now know these things exist and you can google further!

Healing with a ridge/lip. Half of my scar has healed almost totally flat, no more of a scar than the ones OP described. The other half has healed weirdly - I think I tore it open a day or so after my surgery by twisting in a weird way while I was trying to sit up in bed. That half is ridged, with one side of the incision sort of healed over the other. It's a very raised scar, you could probably pinch it between your fingers (I would punch your lights out, but you could). Fantasy/dystopian/etc characters would be much more likely to have this sort of scar than a flat scar if they were stabbed in the stomach or something, bc they wouldn't be able to rest enough for it to heal nicely.

Random sharp pain. Usually, I don't feel the scar at all. But some days I get this sharp pain that runs through the scar and into the muscle beneath, like the wound is re-opening. It often happens in bed at night. It's not intense, just very uncomfortable and irritating. If I'd had a more traumatic experience, I'm sure this would be really triggering tho.

Numbness. My scar is a sort of numb, because the incision severed/damaged nerves. This is very common for this kind of surgery, and usually improves over time - mine definitely did, being almost completely numb for the first 6 months or so, then gradually regaining some sensation. Also, a small patch (4cmx4cm) of my stomach a few cm above the scar is still completely numb, with the numbness fading the further outside that patch you go. (I hope that makes sense lollll.) That patch used to be a little larger, but mostly hasn't improved over time.

Temperature regulation. This one is my absolute favourite, bc I just think it's so cool. Remember that patch of numb skin on my stomach? Yeah, it has no idea how to regulate its temperature. It is always colder than the rest of my body, and in winter it is ICE COLD. It's bizarre - the rest of my stomach will be nice and warm, but that little patch will feel like a fucking corpse. (Obviously, this is all from feeling it with my hand.)

Touching the scar is ✨icky✨. I hate hate hate touching my scar (or someone else touching it). It's a really weird sensation. Physically/technically, it feels sort of numb and dull - I can feel it, but it's like my brain isn't getting all of the sensory information. Emotionally/psychologically/whatever, it just feels wrong. It feels like it isn't a part of my body that should be able to be touched, like the touch has gone through my skin accidentally and is stroking the wall of my abdominal cavity. (It's not like I actually feel the touch in a different place, but it's like the nerves are confused by the touch, like they're not used to it and are sending out the "THAT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPENING" signal.) It's sort of nauseating honestly. But, for all of you hurt/comfort girlies, I could totally see it being a very intimate, vulnerable, trusting thing too. Like, I could see another character helping the scarred character rub scar oil on bc that character can't psych themselves up to touch it. Totally believable.

Now, go forth and traumatise your blorbos 🫶

Writers! Scars 👏 Change 👏 With 👏 Time!

(based of studying my scars changing, obviously not applicable to the wider population)

After the initial cut has healed, the scar will be pink, wider than the initial cut, *sometimes* raised, depending on how deep the wound is.

After about a month, it's still pink, probably will begin to see the line of scar tissue (happens when i pull on the skin around the cut)

6 months, the line is more visible, the pinkness mostly faded (usually comes back if it's cold/hot etc)

1 year, darker outside of the scar, more prominent line, kind of silver-ish and shiny

5 years, depending on depth of scar, there'll be a depression in the skin where the silver line is. No change in the colour of skin around the scar, pale (or darker, depends on the person) line of scar tissue

Scars are itchy. When they're healing, often itchy. When finished healing, still itchy for some people at certain times.

They're also less bendable/stretchy than normal skin.

2. favorite canon thing about this character?

i think that hands down i have to say that i actually really respect the writers/tc/whoever making the active choice to humanize maverick. in a lot of big Straight Man Macho Action Flex Movies (tm) i feel like this is hardcore frowned upon. but i gotta hand it to tc, because i feel like it's a through line for his films- my poor traumatized meow meow ethan hunt comes to mind- that his action hero characters are like. PEOPLE. with emotions. who behave in a way you can empathize with and unpack.

like even in the original movie, though they are obviously not explicit in discussing it, they do address the way a scare can shake you up, the way there's no shame in it. viper even says as much to maverick when he's thinking of quitting. there's no shame in it. that spin was hell, it would've shook me up. there's no shame in cougar quitting either- he still is a good man, as mav helpfully reminds the others. he disobeys orders to help cougar, (i'd like to get on my 'parallels to jake launching against orders to save mav and bradley' high horse here but its not relevant rn so i'm gonna refrain), and he defends cougar's honor to the others multiple times. of course there's the surprising (for an 80s movie full of cheese and needless romance subplots and sweaty men) amount of emotional intelligence in goose and mav's conversation at the housing, when mav apologizes for showboating and makes the ~promise~ to goose and goose gets to display his immense working knowledge of What Makes Mav Tick. for all of that famous ego we've seen in action, mav is perfectly capable of listening to what goose has to say and understanding his point and conceding without making it about himself. that right there is some surprising emotional intelligence (which never coping with losing goose will promptly destroy but i digress)

and then there's the post goose's death universe- they let it haunt him. as they should, but i feel a lot of films in a similar genre and style wouldn't be willing to dwell on it so. he gets to cry. a lot. he's literally in the jet in top gun '86 with just. tears running down his face. then there's tgm- there's the scene outside the hard deck and there's the scene with ice and there's the funeral and there's the fight with bradley on base and there's but you are here and the hug on the carrier. he gets to be genuinely emotional and heartfelt. he gets to express actual in the moment feelings that are not just anger and are not just with a ~love interest~. HE GETS TO BE HUMAN !!! HE GETS TO BE SOFT !!! THATS SO IMPORTANT TO ME. probably wouldn't be my number one blorbo man if it weren't for that.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

aaaaaaa i think my favorite (evil) thing about writing mav is the unreliable narration. it's rly great (read: painful) to sit down and just say the craziest shit that is not true as if it is fact and then know he that he really thinks like that. hes just like 'of course he can't expect the most basic human decency known to man from his closest friends and family because it is unreasonable to imagine someone as horrible as himself could ever deserve it' and he's just talking about like. needing somebody to pick him up from the airport. and you're just like wow. this little guy is fucked up huh

least favorite tho....... it's a two sided coin. it can't be too on the nose and it can't be too over-the-top. mav is great at being/seeming functional, on a surface level. it's only when you get inside of the one bedroom apartment with a bedroom he is not allowed to use bc that's for just in case his long lost son ever comes home or whatever that you realize something is wrong. his pov can't be too down or too depressed. it's mostly objective, with just a direct little splash here and there, just enough so the reader can be like 'okay. yeah. makes sense. alright. still making sense. and....wildest most untrue thing you could possibly say about yourself. alright yeah he needs therapy' <3

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?

aaaaaa so many amazing authors in this fandom do so much that i adore i don't even know where to start, but i guess one of my favorite things has to be when he's just very *shrugs* about the flyboys and they've already decided that he's one of them now. it's really great to know we just all agreed somehow that this is a found family group of aviators who barely have any screen time with each other, and that we all just agreed that mav probably doesn't understand the invitation to be as direct as they mean it because he is frankly unused to receiving such direct invitations period. there is nothing like watching an idiot who needs loved get roped into a found family. like !! yeah !!! get loved !! do it !!! it can't be stopped !!

and hmm something i don't like. very much the reverse again, in a way, but i think one of my least favorite things has got to be either over-infantalizing him into like, way too much of the "baby brother" in the group (i am not denying that this is objectively probably his role, just that this does not mean he is going to be acting like he is 5). he knows how to do the basics. he's an adult man who is technically capable of taking care of himself (though whether he feels he deserves the effort is a different story). you have to be hella fucking smart to graduate with the kinds of degrees and experience you need to do what mav does. he's a fully capable adult. he's just also a little dumb about the self care sometimes. they're not mutually exclusive.

🍭 what’s a headcanon/theory? Oough very good question because with dr there are so many possibilities, but let’s go with the one that allows me to think that v3 is part of the rest of the canon world

Basically there are two ways I’ve thought about this going, one being that games 1 and 2 really did happen and that Tsumugi was a fanatic influenced by Junko, and wanted to create her own killing game in a different part of the world. Granted this one is a bit of a stretch given the amount of resources she would’ve needed, but I still stand by it because the entire concept of THH is a stretch by that same logic

The second way I think it could go is that v3 happens in the future well after the events of the tragedy, and the world is long since healed from it. In this idea p much everything Tsumugi says about the world being bored because there’s no conflict or wars or whatever is true, and therefore the idea of a killing game comprised of consenting participants is appealing for them- that way they get their fix of action, but no one is forced against their will. Of course the fact that this takes place in a post-tragedy world is where the idea for the Junko style killing game comes from, and I think the first couple of seasons were meant to be a reenactment as an homage to the people who actually died fighting for hope. After those first seasons were a hit, the show takes off, and eventually we get to the point where season 53 takes place, and society has been severely warped by their obsession with the game.

Mind you I do also subscribe to the hc that if you die in the game you do NOT die for real because I need all my little blorbos to wake up safe (if not traumatized) post game in a hospital or something, and that Tsumugi was neglecting to mention that detail for the ✨drama✨ of it all.

Pretty much this idea allows me to enjoy replaying v3 without having to completely ignore the ending, because I NEED all my little guys to have truly existed, and that the things they went through weren’t just fabricated, and I need everyone to have existed in the same world. Can you tell I’ve thought about this a lot?

What are his core values? What's his character flaw? What kind of person does he flirt with? How does he flirt? (Yes, I'm sorry, I have a crush). What's his character arc? How does he change throughout the narrative? Does he get soft for his love interest (if yes, how so?)?

Okay, so. Hawthorne.

On the surface, it might not look like he has any sort of moral code. He's willing to steal and even thinks it's fun, he keeps 'questionable' company, and he has no qualms about doing what it takes to win a fight.

However, it wouldn't be inaccurate to call his sense of justice "Robin Hood-esque." He only takes from those he knows won't miss it or who he feels don't deserve it, and he's more than willing to share what little he has with those in need. Plus, he's no stranger to hard work. If you're ever stuck on dish duty and need a pal, Hawthorne's there to help you out!

His 'questionable' friendships arise because he's willing to befriend just about anybody who'll have him, including those whom most people would consider 'rough.' As a result, his connections are more than willing to do things for him that any 'regular' person might consider outrageous—and they do it because they know for a fact he will return the favour.

That said, he does fight dirty. Survival in the world of Rocket Boosters means doing what it takes to stay alive, and many serious fights out in the 'wasteland' end with one or more parties unconscious or worse. While he won't hesitate to throw down, he never underestimates his opponents when going up against them (but he WILL often make sure they underestimate him). This goes doubly when he's fighting for a cause (which is usually the case).

His core values, in a nutshell, are justice, loyalty, and protectiveness.

As for his flaws, well. That deep-seated loyalty also means going to extremes for people—including crossing the country to carry out vengeance for those who can't do it themselves—and not digging deeper to know if it's really worth his time, or if he's being used.

Hawthorne feels his emotions deeply, but he also tries to hide them there. His bravado goes so deep that most people mistake it for unadulterated confidence—including himself on occasion. While he is confident (with the skills to back it up!), he also uses humour to hide the pain of past losses, betrayals, and traumatic events. There are some deep-seated insecurities he'd rather take to his grave than tell anyone about. (Still working on these, so I don't have specifics for you yet!)

Unfortunately, sometimes he gets so caught up in trying to be charming that he misses certain social cues that tell him he's about to be in danger.

Because of his general friendliness and cheerful demeanour, he pushes naturally into flirty territory with many people. However, his favourite 'targets' tend to be those who prefer to keep to themselves or who mask their own pain with grouchiness and apathy. He has a knack for breaking people out of their shells and prides himself on getting a smile even from the surliest individuals :) Even if it takes a while. ESPECIALLY if it takes a while. He finds it incredibly satisfying when these types of folks start to trust him, and he does his best to be worthy of that trust.

He'll often flirt by teasing, making a big deal out of seeing the object of his current affection, and being a total brat in their presence :D I have him described in some of my character notes as "Confidently Annoying" which I feel is pretty accurate. He's very stubborn about it too! Which is why he eventually breaks down people's walls.

Hawthorne's character arc involves making some really hard decisions when his loyalties clash in a major way. Some questions I'm hoping to answer with his narrative are: Will he give up his opportunity for the vengeance that has consumed him for months in order to save a new friend's life? Will he learn to be vulnerable with his emotions or will he give up on getting Beck to trust him? How will he handle the situation when his almost compulsive need to be cheerful (as a trauma response, most likely!) conflicts with the mood of a deeply somber moment? What will he do when his loyalties to his new friends—for whom he cares deeply—conflict with each other?

He changes throughout the story in that he goes from being Extra All the Time to a more balanced approach while still staying true to who he is.

And, yeah. He gets SO soft for his love interest. Before that happens, though, in addition to earning their trust, they have to earn his trust too. When they do, and when it's just the two of them, he finds it much easier to be 'genuine' because he has nothing to fear. And those are his softest moments of all <3

He takes pride in doing practical things for the person he cares about, but also likes giving little gifts so they know he's thinking of them. He's a sucker for a good snuggle next to a campfire and is more than happy to be a pillow for as long as his beloved needs <333

(On the opposite side of 'caring deeply for his beloved', if his beloved gets hurt, woe upon whoever hurt them. If you want to see Hawthorne at his most feral, this is how you'd do it. I think this is one extreme he'll never fully let go of!! <3)

Meet Me In The Woods by Lord Huron: GOING TO EXPLODE. The music is lively, but there's the slightest melancholy tinge to it. AND THE WORDS. Is it about trauma? Fae? Ostensibly both? god I love it. I have such a specific jukebox night in mind for this one aka I decide to make Sky Duo traumatized again. 12/10 I need more

Horse To Water by Tall Heights: those singles lines where his voice gets deeper instead of singing in the higher part of his register INFURIATE me because I want more of that!!!! It's so smooth!!!! And the violin at the end (at least I think it's a violin. I'm bad at identifying instruments.) Is so soft and I adore it. 10/10
