A Cartridge for a Lost Nintendo System | Things of Interest
New video! In the mid-90s, Nintendo made a Super Famicom devkit for use in schools. To this day, it has yet to be found, but here's how pieces of it have been saved and still floating around today...like this RAM cartridge I bought!

fuck, my laptop literally has Intel CORE i3 7th Gen. and IT DOESN'T EVEN WORK PROPERLY WITH PROGRAMMS I NEED! FL STUDIO LAGS AS IF I WAS MAKING SOME 298327382839-INSTRUMENT TRACK AND R.E.P.O. JUST LITERALLY CRASHES ONCE IT'S IN WINDOWED MODE. WTF IS WRONG WITH MY LAPTOP AND WHY CAN'T I EVEN GET ANYTHING BETTER THAN THIS PIECE OF SHIT. Well, i mean I know why. BECAUSE I FUCKING HAVE NO ANY MONEY. this is one of the reasons why I don't start making my mod yet. because SwitchToolbox will prolly not even open here on this laptop. fucking hell. i hope i will finally raise enough money for better PC so I can give this laptop to my mom.

Ninty is doing the most, but where in the fuck are any of y'all finding computers or tablets capable of emulating games at 60fps in resolutions upwards of 4k for $400 or less?? No seriously, the conversation keeps steering towards "Emulation" and "Piracy" but even emulated OG Switch games are notorious computational resource hogs.
Like, okay I can understand maybe a hacked android app letting someone use their phone to run something like Mario Odyssey, but what about the rest of society?? What about folks that are tech illiterate that have no idea what a root folder is?? What about viruses that plague emulation websites that folks are likely to download??
I don't know, I think it's important to call out Nintendo for their shitty pricing and communication strategy. But it's possible that they plan on supporting the OG Switch for a few more years, and are introducing the Switch 2 as a PRO edition of the Switch.
Granted, the S2 is much pricier than the PS4 Pro was at launch. And the games and peripherals having a higher price tag... dare I call it the "HARDcore Gamer Tax?"

Promotional Super Mario 64 poster from Silicon Graphics, the creators of the Nintendo 64 processors. The text on the bottom (barely readable when zoomed in) reads as following:
It's a little black box that can immerse you in exciting 3D virtual worlds, where you can search for treasure, explore underwater kingdoms, even fight an overweight dragon. It's also the hottest game machine on the market. Driven by 64-bit MIPS processors and RealityEngine 3D graphics technology, both from Silicon Graphics, the Nintendo 64 game machine provides a glimpse into our future - where incredibly powerful visual computing is accessible and easy to use.

Hello. So what's the deal with computer chips? Let's say, for example, that I wanted to build a brand new Sega Genesis. Ignoring firmware and software, what's stopping me from dissecting their proprietary chips and reverse-engineering them to make new ones? It's just electric connections and such inside, isn't it? If I match the pin ins and outs, shouldn't it be easy? So why don't people do it?
The answer is that people totally used to do this, there's several examples of chips being cloned and used to build compatible third-party hardware, the most famous two examples being famiclones/NESclones and Intel 808X clones.
AMD is now a major processor manufacturer, but they took off in the 70's by reverse-engineering Intel's 8080 processor. Eventually they were called in to officially produce additional 8086 chips under license to meet burgeoning demand for IBM PC's, but that was almost a decade later if I remember correctly.
There were a ton of other 808X clones, like the Soviet-made pin-compatible K1810VM86. Almost anyone with a chip fab was cloning Intel chips back in the 80's, a lot of it was in the grey area of reverse engineering the chips.
Tumblr media
Companies kept cloning Intel processors well into the 386 days, but eventually the processors got too complicated to easily clone, and so only companies who licensed designs could make them, slowly reducing the field down to Intel, AMD, and Via, who still exist! Via's CPU division currently works on the Zhaoxin x86_64 processors as part of the ongoing attempts to homebrew a Chinese-only x86 processor.
I wrote about NES clones a while ago, in less detail, so here's that if you want to read it:
Early famiclones worked by essentially reverse-engineering or otherwise cloning the individual chips inside an NES/famicom, and just reconstructing a compatible device from there. Those usually lacked any of the DRM lockout chips built into the original NES, and were often very deeply strange, with integrated clones of official peripherals like the keyboard and mouse simply hardwired directly into the system.
Tumblr media
These were sold all over the world, but mostly in developing economies or behind the Iron Curtain where official Nintendo stuff was harder to find. I had a Golden China brand Famiclone growing up, which was a common famiclone brand around South Africa.
Eventually the cost of chip fabbing came down and all those individual chips from the NES were crammed onto one cheap piece of silicon and mass produced for pennies each, the NES-on-a-chip. With this you could turn anything into an NES, and now you could buy a handheld console that ran pirated NES game for twenty dollars in a corner store. In 2002. Lots of edutainment mini-PC's for children were powered by these, although now those are losing out to Linux (and now Android) powered tablets a la Leapfrog.
Nintendo's patents on their hardware designs expired throughout the early 2000's and so now the hardware design was legally above board, even if the pirated games weren't. You can still find companies making systems that rely on these NES chips, and there are still software houses specializing in novel NES games.
Why doesn't this really happen anymore? Well, mostly CPU's and their accoutrements are too complicated. Companies still regularly clone their competitors simpler chips all the time, and I actually don't know if Genesis clones exist, it's only a Motorola 68000k, but absolutely no one is cloning a modern Intel or AMD processor.
Tumblr media
The die of a Motorola 68000 (1979)
A classic Intel 8080 is basically the kind of chip you learn about in entry level electrical engineering, a box with logic gates that may be complicated, but pretty straightforwardly fetches things from memory, decodes, executes, and stores. A modern processor is a magic pinball machine that does things backwards and out of order if it'll get you even a little speedup, as Mickens puts it in The Slow Winter:
I think that it used to be fun to be a hardware architect. Anything that you invented would be amazing, and the laws of physics were actively trying to help you succeed. Your friend would say, “I wish that we could predict branches more accurately,” and you’d think, “maybe we can leverage three bits of state per branch to implement a simple saturating counter,” and you’d laugh and declare that such a stupid scheme would never work, but then you’d test it and it would be 94% accurate, and the branches would wake up the next morning and read their newspapers and the headlines would say OUR WORLD HAS BEEN SET ON FIRE. You’d give your buddy a high-five and go celebrate at the bar, and then you’d think, “I wonder if we can make branch predictors even more accurate,” and the next day you’d start XOR’ing the branch’s PC address with a shift register containing the branch’s recent branching history, because in those days, you could XOR anything with anything and get something useful, and you test the new branch predictor, and now you’re up to 96% accuracy, and the branches call you on the phone and say OK, WE GET IT, YOU DO NOT LIKE BRANCHES, but the phone call goes to your voicemail because you’re too busy driving the speed boats and wearing the monocles that you purchased after your promotion at work. You go to work hung-over, and you realize that, during a drunken conference call, you told your boss that your processor has 32 registers when it only has 8, but then you realize THAT YOU CAN TOTALLY LIE ABOUT THE NUMBER OF PHYSICAL REGISTERS, and you invent a crazy hardware mapping scheme from virtual registers to physical ones, and at this point, you start seducing the spouses of the compiler team, because it’s pretty clear that compilers are a thing of the past, and the next generation of processors will run English-level pseudocode directly.
Tumblr media
Die shot of a Ryzen 5 2600 core complex (2019)
Nowadays to meet performance parity you can't just be pin-compatible and run at the right frequency, you have to really do a ton of internal logical optimization that is extremely opaque to the reverse engineer. As mentioned, Via is making the Zhaoxin stuff, they are licensed, they have access to all the documentation needed to make an x86_64 processor, and their performance is still barely half of what Intel and AMD can do.
Companies still frequently clone each others simpler chips, charge controllers, sensor filters, etc. but the big stuff is just too complicated.

The Game Boy was Nintendo's second foray into handheld gaming. Following their success with their smash hit home console the Nintendo Entertainment System, this cartridge based handheld further cemented Nintendo's dominance in the gaming market.
Released in 1989 in Japan and the USA for the price of $90, it would go on to sell over 64 million units. Created by Chief Engineer Gunpei Yokoi and the R&D1 team, the system featured an 8bit processor, a monochrome screen that could display 4 shades of green, and a mono speaker. It had a link cable port on the side to allow for multi-player games.
It had a very rugged design and is extremely durable, with one famous unit surviving a bombing during the Gulf War. It can still be seen on display at the New York Nintendo Store still working perfectly, even 30 years later.
Over 1000 games were produced for the Game Boy with some notable titles including: Tetris, Super Mario Land, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Rampart, Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, and many, many more...
It is one of the most recognizable devices from the 1990s, becoming a cultural icon in the years following its release. Several redesigns were produced during its lifetime, including the Game Boy Pocket in 1996 (which was about half the size of the original) and the Game Boy Light (which featured a backlit screen) in 1998 (Japan only).
It could run for over 30 hours on 4 AA batteries.

Nintendo consoles from the Gameboy to the Wii U ran their backwards compatible games natively. The Wii U and 3DS adjusted their processors perfectly to match the Wii and DS. The Switch 2, however, seems to be the first console afterwards that has to *emulate* the Switch 1.

Xenoblade 4 hint from Monolith Soft Recruitment page?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Monolith Soft announced their RPG recruitment for a while back, and I'm surprised NOBODY has brought this up because I feel this RPG recruitment by Takahashi might give a hint about the project he's actually working on, and especially about the future of the Xenoblade series.
As you can see from the picture, there's a background with a simple gradient color. At first glance, it might not mean anything, right? BUT when you notice the colors of the gradient, they are strikingly similar to the Trinity Processor's color-coding. There's red (Ontos), green (Pneuma), and dark purple (Logos). There's also a hint of dark blue, but I'll elaborate on that later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, let’s start with the striking red. The red gradient bears a strong resemblance to Ontos’s core! The palette and gradient feel nearly identical, featuring that distinctive scarlet red with an orange-ish glow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we have the green, which closely matches Pneuma’s core. The shade leans toward a vibrant emerald green, making the similarity hard to ignore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, there’s Logos. This one is a bit trickier to spot because the purple is very dark, blending into the dark background and almost camouflaging itself. However, upon closer inspection, the hue is undeniably close to a deep purple, resembling Logos’s core.
Based on this picture, we can speculate that the "RPG" game Takahashi is developing might be Xenoblade 4. Could it focus on the Trinity Processor? It seems plausible, especially considering Takahashi’s comment in the XB3 artbook ~Aionios Moment~, where he mentioned that "he couldn't explain why Malos is in N's sword yet."
Among the Trinity Processor members in the Xenoblade trilogy, Logos is the only one who hasn’t had a game centered around him. Even Xenoblade 3 leaned heavily on Ontos and Pneuma’s stories.
There's also interesting color in the picture that you can see below, there's tiny hint of blue light
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder what this could mean. It might not be anything, but let’s take a wild guess.
From Monolith Soft’s 25th Anniversary video and the pictures of their office shared on Twitter, it’s strange how prominently they placed KOS-MOS in the spotlight. Sure, it could just be an homage to their first games, like Xenosaga, but it’s odd that they include KOS-MOS only and not other IPs.
I’m not suggesting we’ll get a Xenosaga remake or Episode 4. Given how Bandai Namco operates these days, that feels like a pipe dream. Contrary to what the fandom thinks, I don’t buy into the theory that Nintendo will buy the IP or fund remakes. That’s not how Nintendo typically operates, especially in their current situation. Plus, Xenosaga has blatant religious references (it literally has actual Jesus as a character & character recites freakin' bible scripture) no way Nintendo would touch that (as evidenced by how some religious references were omitted in Xenoblade 2 localization).
Now, back to the topic. I speculate that this “blue” connection might tie into the blue light falling to Earth in the ending of Future Redeemed (FR). I have a strong feeling that in XB4, we might see a character reminiscent of KOS-MOS 2.0 (basically akin to Saber face in Fates series), Monolith Soft might introduce a female character with blue hair, robotic traits, or a story/personality that nods to KOS-MOS. Alternatively, it could involve remnants of KOS-MOS, like her core or programming, reimagined as a weapon, relic, or machine central to the XB4 story.
If the leaks about Monolith Soft’s new game codenamed ''Project Legacy'' are true, this idea might fit perfectly with the potential XB4 theme: exploring the “legacy” of Klaus and his world. While the Klaus saga might be over, parts of his legacy—like the Trinity Processor and Origin—are still around. Origin especially feels like a magnet for conflict, practically begging for villains to emerge. Someone definitely want to control it.
Reminder FR hinted at space faring humans still existing in Klaus’s world—there are space colonies out there. In the Xeno series, the existence of Earth (a.k.a. Lost Jerusalem) has always been incredibly significant. The FR radio scene essentially confirms that XB’s world is connected to Lost Jerusalem, and the fact that it alludes to space faring humans is pretty important.
“What could this mean?” The next game might delve into the importance of the Conduit (I doubt the Conduit/Zohar is completely gone), space faring humans (!!!), and the Saviorite—artificial humans mentioned in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and FR (in Xenosaga, it's Realian). The Trinity Processor, Origin, and the mysterious blue light could all play major roles.
So many questions, but these things will definitely be highlights in the next game. I predict the villain might be from space—now that Earth is back, the humans in space might discover it sooner or later.
I’m also sure that Malos/Logos will play an important role! Logos is the only member of the Trinity Processor who hasn’t had his own game or a "human" partner to unlock his potential. The idea of seeing a Logos Ascended form a la Pneuma, possibly an alter ego for Logos/Malos and a Trinity Processor reunion? Gosh, it’s so exciting!
Personally, I hope Xenoblade 4 is set thousands of years after the events of XB3. Frankly, I’d prefer that Mythra’s child doesn’t become the protagonist or even a relevant character, as it might undermine the message of XB3, IMO. Instead, they could establish Mythra’s child as a historical or influential figure—someone whose legacy or actions significantly impact the central conflict in XB4.
I think it would be more interesting if the protagonist of XB4 came from outer space rather than Earth. This could offer a fresh perspective on space faring human society, including their politics, culture, and way of life—something we know very little about. It would also be fascinating to see a protagonist experiencing cultural clashes or value conflicts with the people of Earth. Of course, Malos/Logos should play an important role, perhaps as the protagonist’s “Blade” or companion.
As for the protagonist's gender, I don't bother with it. If it’s a girl, I’d like her to be stoic—different from someone like Shion Xenosaga. Maybe she could be a researcher or an artificial human soldier. If it’s a boy, same with a girl but he's more mentally broken or menhera, to occurring joke that how Malos/Logos is always drawn to edgy, broken men in Japanese meme LOL.
I also want to see Pneuma as a potential antagonist or hostile entity. We’ve already seen other Trinity Processor members (Ontos-Alpha and Logos-Malos) become villain, but Pneuma has yet to take on an evil or antagonistic role. It would be intriguing to explore this side of her, especially since her philosophy and what she represents could make her the most cunning villain among her siblings—something akin to Miang from Xenogears.
Ultimately, I hope this game allows Takahashi to tell the story he’s been envisioning, maybe the ''imagined'' of Perfect Works Episode 6 or Xenosaga Episode 4. And hope we get chaos expy too!
Anyway, thanks for reading my ramblings! Please remember, this is just my analysis and speculation—none of it should be taken as fact. Regardless of what this project turns out to be, I’ll always be excited for Monolith Soft’s games!

Sega Mega Drive - Virtua Racing
Title: Virtua Racing / バーチャレーシング
Developer/Publisher: Sega AM2
Release date: 18 March 1994
Catalogue No.: G-7001
Genre: Racing
Tumblr media
Nintendo had their Super FX, so Sega made their SVP (Sega Virtua Processor) capable of much more than the Super FX. The SVP could push 9000 polygons per second running at 23 MHz / 23 Mips. While I liked Star Fox / Star Wing on the Super Famicom, it was still a bit slow, Wild Trax / Stunt Race FX was far too slow, and the screen size was so small. Except for Vortex's excellent music, the other Super FX games are best not to be talked about. Anyway, back to Virtua Racing. This Mega Drive port features all 3 tracks from the arcade game along with the 4 changeable views. Even the classic "GAME OVER" music is in there as well as all the other Arcade themes. The playability is also spot on. The only bad thing about Mega Drive V.R. is the fact that the resolution is a bit low and at times if you choose the in-car view, you can't make out the track. Aside from that, Mega Drive Virtua Racing is a masterpiece and poops all over the crappy Time Warner Saturn Version.
Below you can see a scan of the actual game cartridge and instruction book.

GAMEBOY COLOR
Tumblr media
The Game boy Color (GBC) was the successor to the Nintendo Game boy, released in 1998. It was the first console in the Game boy series to support a color display, making it a significant step forward in the development of portable game consoles.
Release date: The Game boy Color was released in Japan on October 21, 1998, in the United States on November 23, 1998, and in Europe on June 18, 1999.
Display: The Game boy Color's display was 2.3 inches and supported 56 different colors at a time, compared to the 4 shades of black and white on the original Game boy. The color display wasn't as sharp in resolution as modern color technologies, but it was a significant improvement.
Resolution: 160x144 pixels, the same as the original Game boy.
Performance: 8-bit processor (Z80), but slightly faster than the original Gameboy.
Memory: 32 KB RAM
Battery: Two AA batteries, which gave about 10 hours of playtime. The whole device was quite light and compact.
The Game boy Color was compatible with both its own color games and the original Game boy's black-and-white games. The color games took advantage of the hardware improvements, but older black-and-white games would run normally without color vision.
Popular games like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Pokémon Gold, and Pokémon Silver benefited from the color display.
The Gameboy Color was a huge commercial success, selling over 118 million units worldwide and was extremely popular in the early 2000s.
What was your best memory with the Game boy Color?
Tumblr media

I headcanon that skywarp is actually really smart! Think about it- the sheer amount of calculations he has to do in a split second in order to teleport? Taking inertia and gravity and shit into account to make sure he doesn't accidentally warp his spark outside his chest or his head inside a gun?
Unfortunately literally nobody including skywarp himself have any idea because his warp drive takes up all that bandwidth. so he's just over here eating chips and getting crumbs all over himself. Casually a genius with no awareness of it. Using his incredible processor to teleport into a storage closet and steal breakdowns nintendo ds
I also think because of his teleporting he easily makes friends with bigger/more intimidating tfs like triple changers, cuz its harder for them to intimidate/accidentally kill him :] sorry for rambling happy warp wednesday
this this THIS i completely agree and i think about it all the time— he’s definitely smart and good at math and physics but probably unaware of it. like i’m sure he’s called dumb all the time and it’s easy to believe that when people keep telling you. BUT yes i agree his warp drive must be skill-based (if that’s the right words to use), rather then just a cool power he has
also re: nintendo ds— i know in my heart soul and mind that he has a big collection of n64 and gamecube stuff!!! i imagine cybertronians could probably download the games to their processors but also it’s probably cooler and more fun to play the games in-person. i know technically they are supposed to be tiny since they’re human-made but let’s not think too deeply about that
and finally this i agree with as well because it’s probably easy to fuck with them and piss them off and just -zoop- escape

Midnight Gaming: Long Live Eggbug
So last night I played Atari 50th anniversary collection, checked socials later to find.... cohost will shut down by the end of the year... aww..
So Atari is a company thats been around for a long while in the gaming industry, all the way back in the 70's with pong and asteroids, leading to the atari 2600 or vcs as it was called and finally leading to thier last console, the atari jaguar which flopped hard. It was a console that was advertised as a true 64 bit console even though it was really just 2 custom 32 bit processors, making it difficult to make games that run well, in the same decade that has the playstation and the nintendo 64. Yeah, "do the math".
Never really got to experience much of Atari when they were a contender in the scene, heck I wasn't even a year old when the Jaguar was launched so it wasn't really a part of gaming that I had a hands on experience with but I have heard of them. In my general interest in all things gaming in my youth, Atari was brought up sometimes in some gaming mags and online media, AVGN is probably for many people how they heard about Atari as he covered some games on the 2600, even did an episode on the failed 5200 and the Jaguar consoles.
Tumblr media
So Digital Eclipse (not to be confused with digital extremes, the warframe folks) has done a 50th anniversary collection that has various games from atari's history, including some unreleased games. Naturally since these games can be easily emulated, a collection of old games wouldnt mean much but theres more to this than just that. You also get a bunch supplemental material such as artwork, behind the scenes documents and videos of interviews with several employees and key figures in atari's history, talking about various things. Cliffy B is there too for some reason.
For me its damn fascinating to follow along a timeline of events, looking at various media and playing some games, getting a feel on Atari's journey over the years. You do learn a few things about the company and how it ran at the time and uhhh.. it certanly looks a bit familiar. Developers having to work overtime, upper management ignoring concerns from thier employees, games being marketed beyond what could actually be delivered leading to consumer backlash, employees losing their jobs in mass. Yeah those problems are still around nowadays huh. 50 years later and nobody has really learnt anything, still making the same mistakes that one time led to the most infamous market crashes in history. Funny thing tho, while the games market did indeed crash in 83, leading to several businesses going bankrupt, for the average 2600 player it was just an odd time in which new 2600 games werent made. Because the 2600 had such a massive install base, eventually new 2600 games got made again, even during the time when the Sega Master System and the Nintendo Entertainment System were leading the console scene. To quote one Garry Kitchen "No one told consumers that there had been a crash. No one went to their house and said "You don't like video games anymore"".
Digital Eclipse also did some other games in the documentary style, the art of karateka and llamasoft. I wouldn't mind checking those out as I feel a documentary that covers a particular subject sounds fascinating to put the lenses of an interactive game, though I suppose it does veer a bit close to "edutainment" territory.
So now with that done, lets move onto the.... news. Cohost is announced to be closing down at the end of year with it converting to a read only format in October. I genuinly enjoyed my time on cohost even if it was short. From looking for alternatives to Tumblr, I stumbled onto it and found a chill sort of site that I felt comfortable browsing, chatting with peeps and sharing posts. It was a site that had an independent vibe that was unique and humble compared to some of its contemporaries. Tumblr weared the mask of being queer friendly despite nuking the odd trans blog every now and then, twitter is a cesspit run by that nepobaby bastard, discord seems to have issues with power tripping mods and creeps. A lot of social media seems to either be.full of techbro crypto ai weirdos or algorithmic data-harvesting software or both! But cohost had the vision of a place that didnt had user-unfriendly practices, instead of just making a site that demands engagement from the user for the sake of profit, the team made the site comfortable to browse and post on, letting people build up communities to hang out and chill in. Sadly that ambition wasnt sustainable due to the issues with both work and finance and in the end, it'll all be shut down.
I'll still be posting Midnight Gaming on Cohost until October as well as on tumblr until I find another site to host this series. Maybe I'll try that dreamwidth place I heard about, maybe i'll actually make a neocities site. We'll see what the future holds.
Tumblr media
Until then, Rest in Piece Cohost. Hug your local eggbug today.... oh yeah james earl jones passed away too... awful lot of death lately, an old friend on my fathers side recently lost thier wife too. September what the hell you doing?
Hey whatever happened to those prizes that were won during the Swordquest contest?
Thats all for today, see you tomorrow. Feel free to leave any game suggestions or feedbacks. Anons are currently on.

Yeah and besides that ... i am a decent human being i think? I am not really gonna surprise you with some fucked up political opinion that you didnt expect from me atleast.
I am mostly chill about stuff. I dont get angry easily unless youre like homophobic or racist or smth. I like everything creative and am mostly lost in my dreams, because i dont really like the real world. I am queer and apart from that dont really label myself, so you can go with whatever. Oh and english isnt my native language. Not a minor.
