I swear, my students this semester are going to make me either combust from emotions or have to write a post about queer mentorship because so far I've got:
student who asked about my ace ring
student who came to office hours to talk about gender, because they're trying to figure out their own gender and they thought I would have helpful things to say
student who said he was really grateful to have an openly non-binary professor because it means that he can see a model for what his future might look like
student who keeps dropping by office hours to talk about being a QPoC (and having to deal with racism in queer spaces)
all the students who just casually come out to me in office hours (god. I know that the world has changed so much since I was in college, but what a gift regardless)
and then of course the two separate students who have asked me for help with their D&D campaigns, which is honestly the funniest possible read of me

This poem of mine is going around again on Twitter, so I figured I'd share it here too. Queer joy is queer survival. We will win.

Opening oneself up to such a perception of queerness as manifestation in and of ecstatic time offers queers much more than the meager offerings of pragmatic gay and lesbian politics. Seeing queerness as horizon rescues and emboldens concepts such as freedom that have been withered by the touch of neoliberal thought and gay assimilationist politics. Pragmatic gay politics present themselves as rational and ultimately more doable. Such politics and their proponents often attempt to describe themselves as not being ideological, yet they are extremely ideological and, more precisely, are representative of a decayed ideological institution known as marriage. Rationalism need not be given over to gay neoliberals who attempt to sell a cheapened and degraded version of freedom. The freedom that is offered by an LGBT position that does not bend to straight time's gravitational pull is akin to one of Heidegger's descriptions of freedom as unboundness. And more often than not the "rhetorical" deployment of the pragmatic leads to a not doing, an antiperformativity. Doing, performing, engaging the performative as force of and for futurity is queerness's bent and ideally the way to queerness.

in other news, feeling very soft about queer mentorship and, despite how terrifying being openly queer and non-binary at work is, god, having queer and trans kids come to office hours just to talk...something something queer futurity

therapist: how are you?
me: do you ever think about the fact that in 2003 John Winchester woke up one day from a dream where his sons were part of a queer interspecies family and the thought made him happy?

some of you people are so obsessed with having an acceptable group to ‘punch up’ at that you would rather pretend a marginalized group are Basically The Oppressors™ than listen to their valid criticisms about the fact that ‘punching up’ very rarely hits the intended target, and the majority of the actual damage of that act is suffered by fellow marginalized people in your own community. there is a significant difference between venting frustrations about privileged groups and just outright attacking anyone who (you assume) experiences that axis of privilege regardless of - and in many cases outright denying - their actual lived experiences. it goes far beyond just ‘venting frustrations’ when what you’re really doing is trying to find a moral justification to bully people you don’t like, and when your own desire for catharsis and moral superiority leads to ignoring the voices of the vulnerable people you hurt. you’re not ‘punching up’ - you just like punching people for the sake of punching.

I’m not sure when exactly this happened, but I think it’s clear that the aro community really is a community, now.
For the longest time I’ve felt like we were still in stasis, not quite there; a proto-community, yes, but not quite a community. But we have more history now to lean back on, more of each other to talk to and laugh with and cry with and learn from. More people that’ll go forward and make a part of modern aro history. More people that believe us, believe in us, will stand with us if we ask them.
I wouldn’t consider myself an aro elder yet, though each year I’m surprised at how long aromanticism has been a part of my life, how long I’ve been free of doubt or insecurity about my aromanticism, how far we’ve come since I was questioning. Then again, when I was questioning, some of the people I looked up to for guidance were probably close to the age I am now, so I might be there sooner than I think.
And, I’m so so hopeful for all aros, young or old, new or not, because we’ve come so far. Day by day, progress is slow (and yes, it’s unfair, it should be so much faster), but looking back it feels fast. We are our own role models, the people we look up to for guidance. We carve our own path through life, making things up as we go. I used to find that terrifying, because I had no idea what the future would bring. But it’s actually amazing, because I can ignore all these silly “rules” and guidelines about what my life should be, and instead ask, “what do I want my life to be?”
Younger me, you have no idea how awesome your future is gonna be. I’m sorry about the pain and hardship you’ll go through first; it won’t be fair and you shouldn’t have to deal with it. But you’ll make it through, and one day you’ll be me. I can’t wait for you to get here.

this is kind of a semantic pet peeve i know but i gotta say i still hate seeing people describe themselves in the present tense with agab. it rarely makes justifiable sense and almost always instead reads like someone just replacing the false binary of male/female in their head with amab/afab. “im afab nonbinary” no you are not an “assigned female at birth person”, you were (c)afab, this was a past action that was done to you on the behalf of an arbitrary and illusory patriarchal system not an identity or state of being and it does not speak to some essential or unchanging “reality” about you like male/female tries to, as we’re used to using it, we can get out of the pit
