ok im going to #seriouspost for a second here. I don't think Harry Potter is a manifesto. I think it was a flawed passion project that millennials latched onto because of the fantasy of sticking it to their mean teachers and arbitrarily categorizing themselves (hogwarts houses; it's the thinking millennial's astrology). I think the fact that the series got popular when and how it did was very much a product of its time.

I don't think Harry Potter is the biggest symbol of JKR's bigotry. I think the most flagrant sign of that was how she responded to critics. I watched her become radicalized in real time. I watched how she doubled down on her racism when she was called out for the ways she promoted her tragically mid fantastic beasts movies. I watched her chase marginalized teenagers with a double digit follower count off of twitter for daring to criticize her thought process, and no one with any kind of power standing against her because she was the one who was paying them. This isn't to say Harry Potter is without flaws. This is to say she really didn't give a shit about that. Getting rich and powerful is a hell of a drug, and she had enough sycophants that she had no reason to care about what her critics were saying.

She was convinced that she was a martyr; a voice for the unheard; a leader for the ages, so of course her detractors were the bad guys. And I think we should take this to heart. We should see this as an example of how easy it is to get radicalized; if you think of yourself as a paragon of virtue, you are going to think that whatever you see as good and right is an objective fact. Most people don't know this, but the majority of terfs start out as trans allies. You are not immune to propaganda! You are not immune to falling into dangerous ideologies!!!

This is why the most important thing you can do as an activist is to listen. Do NOT think you're above being wrong; do NOT develop a god complex; do NOT form an identity out of being right all the time. Involve yourselves in the groups you claim to speak for. Listen to trans women; share resources that help trans women; familiarize yourself with the diversity of experiences that trans people have and the struggles they face.

No, none of you are as bad as JKR because you don't have her money or her power. You will likely never have the capacity for harm she does. But check yourselves. Do not affirm yourselves into thinking you always have the moral high ground. Watch yourselves; humble yourselves; check yourselves for signs of cult behavior and internalized prejudice. You are always learning. You will always be learning. Do not allow yourselves to get a power trip from brushing off marginalized voices.

Apparently Rowling hasn't tweeted since her cyber bullying meltdown, and I'm thinking that might be related to Imane Khelif's lawsuit, and now I'm wondering if we can give her an additional gold medal for being the first person to ever get JK to finally shut the fuck up.

I mean apart from the fact trans people, intersex people and people of colour aren't harmful either and oppression isn't because a group deserved it and marginalised people don't need to be morally pure to not be discriminated against, no asexuality isn't harmless in conservatives' eyes. In an ideology where cis heterosexual marriage and sex for reproduction is seen as mandatory you having little to no sexual attraction ruins the whole set up. You can't 'be fruitful and multiply' in the way god intended. You have a nonsexuality that isn't being forced onto you by them. You're not repressing your desire in the name of god because you barely have any. You have control over your own body and you aren't supposed to do that. You're spitting in the face of conservative sexual and gender roles just by existing. Spit harder!

And can I just say, as someone who also had black mold in the walls of my house that was making me deathly ill and affecting my mental health, I'm really not enjoying the connotations that breathing in black mold spores make you a racist transphobe.

I'm grateful to everyone quote-tweeting her and pointing out all the ways asexuals are, indeed, marginalized and oppressed. As Thomas pointed out, they're lesser-known issues. But as an ace person, I'm more concerned with the way she completely invalidates our identity

This isn't a case of "you aren't oppressed because everyone already accepts your identity" (which we see a lot online), or the usual exclusionism. She's saying we don't have an identity to oppress. This is why she doesn't see posting hate against asexual people on international asexuality day as oppression (or, you know. wrong). The thousands of bigoted comments under her post aren't proof that people do, actually, discriminate against aces: she agrees with them, and is there riling them up.

I've been reporting terfs and the like on Pinterest (where they, sometimes, actually do something about it) and ace/arophobia is never far. It just got more obvious

i think what a lot of people mean when they say "the harry potter books suck" is that as well as jk rowling being an awful individual, her beliefs are woven into the book to the point where you cant really do any of the "separate the art from the artist" thing. plenty of all kinds of bigotry in them as well

And I'm not saying that her personal views haven't affected the books negatively, or that they are objectively great, just that making this more about the books themselves being bad than Rowling using the franchise for bad seems like a weird and unnecessary move to me

I love how people like JK Rowling swear that us folks of the Alphabet Mafia™ persuasion are overly sensitive sissies but the moment she hears a basic rundown of what being asexual means, she has to whine on Twitter about a community that has done absolutely nothing to anyone.

It’s also very funny to me that she considers herself a feminist when she is so incredibly nasty towards everyone she thinks is too different. That’s not what feminism is. If she were a real feminist she’d acknowledge intersections and how society hurts different types of women in different ways. If she actually gave a shit about women’s liberation, she would care about all women, and she’d shut her swollen jowls long enough to learn the very real violence that women on the asexual spectrum face.

It’s not that hard to guess how a woman who experiences little to no sexual attraction might be treated in a society that allows men to treat us like inanimate sex toys with zero disregard for our personal sense of safety and dignity. Now, kids, let’s put our brains together and think real hard about what often happens to women when we reject men.

Ik the rest of the community isn't gonna say anything bout this very specific thing but JKR didn't just go 'asexuals bad' she also actively stated she doesn't think you can be gay without sexual attraction. She played one of the oldest homophobic cards in the book. That being gay is inherently sexual. Like it's more than just doing a meanie to alloaces or aroace erasure she + her supporters parroted the exact same 'sexual and romantic attraction are the same' bs that Matt Walsh did already. (Fun fact he also made a whole video arguing why bi asexuality doesn't exist). The gap between anti homosexuality and anti homoranticism is a footstep. Conservatives were never exclusively anti gay because of gay sex they were anti gay full stop.
