Oh, Kevin is definitely very nuanced, in the og trilogy I found him fascinating for that very reason. I just don't care to express it anymore because his stans are going to be pissed and attack no matter what, so I might as well just vent, you know? Like, you want something to hate? The fact that he is so nuanced in canon is actually what drives me crazy about the fanon version of Kevin!

The way he gets woobified, infantilized, reduced as a character by his own fans is an absolute disgrace

His fans are somehow convinced that everyone wants Kevin as a friend, and as a boyfriend, that he belongs with Andreil and JereJean, that the world revolves around him...

No? Man is one of the most unlikable people in the Aftg universe. So much so that even Jeremy Knox doesn't want to hear one more word from him at one point. He is a Fox. And before that he was a Raven. He is not supposed to be likeable. And that's what makes him interesting!

Nora: Kevin has no friends, it'll take him years into their pro careers, after they're all Court, to become friends with Andreil; Jeremy doesn't count because they barely text; Jean? Kevin's behavior forever ruined any chances at a friendship; Thea? Closest thing to a friend he has, but it will take them years of living together and playing in the same team to develop an actually affectionate, more conventional bond; maybe after he retires Kevin will be able to make friends with new people he meets; any relationship Kevin is in will have to account for his narcissism

Kevin stans: Kevin and Andrew are besties! Kevin and Neil are besties! Kevin and Jeremy are besties! Kevin and Jean will be besties eventually!Everyone loves and adores Kevin!

I've never seen a fanbase so allergic to their fave experiencing the consequences of his own actions

Man is insufferable, no one who actually knows him likes him (the only person who does is Thea and the fandom hates her lol). The Foxes aren't fooled by his PR mask, they know it's just a facade, he had his PR training ingrained into him by years of abuse. He is stubborn and refuses to deal with his trauma in a healthy way, because all that matters is Exy, and as long as he can play everything is fine so who cares if he's an alcoholic? He is a hypocrite, he is a snob, he is an abused prince who despite escaping his gilded cage still believes he is owed the obedience of all the peasants around him. And that's what makes him so interesting!

Incredibly ironic that Kevin fans are the ones doing him the biggest disservice by reducing his character so much

I'm so, so, so glad that all my venting led to me meeting so many like-minded people! Because honestly I was feeling like I was about to lose it! 😂 I left this fandom years ago because of all the mischaracterization, then joined again because I couldn't resist the temptation of JereJean. I'm so glad that this time around there's more people openly critical of some characters! Jean's POV of Kevin really opened a lot of people's eyes. But the rest just dug in their heels even harder and won't accept any opinion that goes against the version of Kevin they have built in their minds in the past 10 years (the: uwu poor misunderstood baby emperor of the universe Kevin Day)

I actually can't wait for the Kevin duology (not the prequel bc I don't care about seeing more horrors, but the sequel? Yes, please!) because I like him as a character. Shocker, I know! I like Kevin Day the character. But I dislike Kevin Day the person. Snobbish, self-centered, narcissistic, callous, victim-blaming, uncaring for the feelings of others and even their health unless it affects Exy

But isn't that the whole point when it comes to the Foxes? Good characters, horrible people

Jean and Jeremy (& Cat, Laila, Cody, Rhemann, etc.) are the closest thing we get to good characters and good people... and so many people in the fandom don't like them????? Which makes no sense to me because in fanon they constantly assign the Foxes character traits that belong to the Trojans, and completely erase what makes the Foxes Foxes. I just makes no sense to me 😭😭😭

I finally go to it! Thank you for this ask, I can spend hours talking about Obito.

How I feel about this character.

I’ll start from the very beginning. I got into Naruto in 2008-2009. In a few chapters of the first part of Naruto, Kakashi mentioned someone by the name of ‘Obito’, and you know, I was already intrigued by Kakashi’s speech to Sasuke that everyone he loved already died and that got me wondering if/when/how his teammates would ever appear. Then Kakashi Gaiden appeared.

I was flabbergasted with Kakashi’s way of being, I mean what a stark contrast to how we as readers met him and got to know him. But Obito, oh he conquered my heart immediately. The way he was introduced (a bit clumsy, late, his excuses) oh man, what a cute kid. I love his design, his energy, his stupid fights with Kakashi, his interaction with Rin, and his ideals. What a powerful character he was. That crucial fight with Kakashi that turned Kakashi’s world on its axis, what a beast, he truly was not afraid to fight for his ideals and to put someone in its place.

I was so invested into the theory that the mysterious Madara was in  fact Obito. Chapter 599 hit, and I swear I was so happy, shocked, excited. My fave was alive! I was such a believer that it would have been anticlimatic would it have been Danzo, Izuna, Shisui, Madara or anyone else really. 

He’s a very grey character to me, who’s sadly misunderstood by this one sentence ‘because you let Rin die.’ It doesn't do justice as to why he became who he became. He was a big hearted kid, went through a near death experience, got locked up in a cave with monsters and a madman , was in pain, and the only thing he thought of was to return to Rin and Kakashi.

He fought tooth and nail for what he believed in. But alas, Madara and the wars fucked him up.

Fun fact: back in 2008-2009 I started searching the internet for fics about Team Minato, but Minato didn’t have a name yet so it was either ‘Team Arashi’ or ‘Team Yellow Flash’ if memory serves right! There were just a few select ones on LiveJournal and fanfiction dot net.  

TLDR: He’s my fave character of all time your Honor. 

Btw, I had to look it up in the manga, but this right here is what made me fall in love with him. This. "Then lead!" For me, the Kakashi Gaiden arc was (next to the wave arc), the most telling and heartfelt arc in Naruto.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Kakashi. I’ve been shipping them since Kakashi Gaiden :/ This is the one couple I keep shipping. I can't get rid of them despite my best efforts.

Rin, sometimes. I think it could work under some circumstances but in recent years I haven’t been shipping them.

Kisame. I mean he’s even more of a beast than Obito. Need I say more? And Kisame was loyal to him. I like to believe Kisame was the one in the organisation Obito trusted out of anyone.

Kakashi and Rin in a polypairing. My OT3.

Konan, sometimes, but not in the way of ‘enemies to lovers’, but more like ‘enemies with benefits’, in a toxic, unhealthy way.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Rin. Although I can ship them romantically, I like them better as besties and partners in crime. I think she’s the one who just gets him and can bring out the very best in him with her way of just being there for him. 

My unpopular opinion about this character

It wasn’t ‘just’ Rin.

He’s the strongest. He defied death so many times with pure, sheer willpower, anger and all other things mixed in. The guy just kept going and going.

Let the man live at the end of the series.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

the whole speech with Naruto. I mean what was that? No, just no. It didn’t do it for me. I wish Kishimoto had done that differently. 

I wish there were more moments between Kakashi and Obito in general, but I got fanfiction to quench my thirst.

I think the way people react to izzy would annoy me a lot less if it had started after season 2, cause at least then there’d actually be a reason for people to like him and to want to defend him. As far as I can think, he has absolutely zero redeeming qualities in season 1 other than being really funny when he gets pissed off.

It didn’t surprise me when I first found out izzy had fans after watching season 1 (ok it actually did at first but not after thinking about it for a few minutes), cause it’s really common for people to like the angry/grumpy/asshole character! I’ve been in so many fandoms in the past where that’s been the case but usually people react in a “oh he’s an asshole but I love him!/my stupid trash baby with no friends/etc.” kinda way. So I expected it to be the same with Izzy! I expected jokes about him being the angry old dog who barks at everyone or that he’s the asshole fave, and I expected people to be writing stories where he realises he doesn’t need to be angry all the time and finds family and acceptance with the crew. (And from what I’ve heard of the early days of the fandom that is actually how it was at first! And also… literally what happens in s2) What I didn’t expect was people going back through all of his actions throughout the show and trying to twist them into him being in the right!! That he was the one who had been wronged, he was the sensible hardworking one who no one else appreciated!

And maybe if that sort of behaviour had started after season 2, after people had a reason to start loving him (cause I know a lot of people went from hating to loving him after s2!) it would be a little less annoying to me. But it didn’t, it started when some of the last few scenes we got with Izzy were him pushing Ed back into an unhealthy headspace, him being delighted when “Blackbeard became himself” again, and him happily abandoning half the crew on a deserted island!

࿇ With Jichang, you have to acknowledge that he had gone through, what I feel like, all sorts of trauma during his time in Seoul.

࿇ Getting kicked out of the city by Gitae Kim, is in fact, a light testament of how the brute of a man had forcibly removed him from his position as king—swinging his axe haphazardly, but with the intent to inevitably get rid of Jichang not just from being the ruler of Seoul, but from the world in itself.

࿇ How he was beaten by James Lee twice to the point he had pitied him, not even bothering to remove a limb because he was just not worth it in the legend’s eyes.

࿇ How he was called weak not just by in losing fights, but in many different ways that had gone through his head.

࿇ I think it blew irreversible damage to his confidence and ego—especially if you think about how he felt during that time; how fresh it all feels for him.

࿇ How can the former King of Seoul be reduced to this?

࿇ I feel like it would take time for Jichang to heal from all of that, and while it doesn’t hurt as much as it did for him, it’s like a certain type of grief that lingers in his body, heart, and mind. There are reminders everywhere of what he had lost and what he had become, and so it will take a lot of patience with him.

࿇ Moving onto the lighter things, I want to take notice of how caring and loving he is towards his brothers. ࿇ He’s strict—all business when needed be. And while I know that the Jichang from Seoul and the Jichang from Chungcheong are still somehow different, he still carries that with him.

࿇ I feel like he would be overprotective too given how he had ensured that Bakgu Noh was safe from the threats that possibly haunted the old man. While he did owe Bakgu Noh a lot of things (I forgot if anything was implied regarding this, please feel free to remind me), he’s protective still.

IN DATING...

࿇ Since I did mention that Jichang carries a lot of trauma from the past, basically demeaning himself from time to time, he’ll need reassurance from you.

࿇ In relationships, partners reassure their lovers that it’s completely okay that they get affected from their traumas—from situations that happened years ago—especially if it gets triggered on a random day, and you are that kind of person towards Jichang, but I feel like he also knows that he has to get better from this.

࿇ That he’s safer now here in Chungcheong surrounded by his loved ones, how he’s with someone as patient as you. How he knows that you love him, and that love will fuel his desire to become better and to heal from that.

࿇ Since the dangers never end, and despite the quietness that the province holds, he would make sure that you’re okay and that he knows where you are. That might seem overbearing, but it’s really just for your safety—and it eases his mind honestly.

࿇ He would be a real romantic though. I mean at first he would probably be a little nonchalant towards you, afraid to show affection or still hide behind his mask, but you’ll eventually break all that down and you’ll realize that there’s a man who loves you purely and softly despite how rough of a background he had.

࿇ I think he’d be a little insecure with handholding considering the state of his hands. It’s particularly messed up with marks from the past, and every time he sees them, he’s reminded that he uses these hands to hurt people and to protect.

࿇ But whenever you hold them without any complaint and in gentleness, he’s amazed. Jichang would probably think how you’re possibly just stomaching to hold his hand because that’s what couples do.

࿇ He’s an overthinker too, and so you will reassure him, calm him down that you’re not just holding it even though it’s mortifying to look at. You tell him that you’re holding it because you want to.

࿇ And he’s probably thinking oh, that’s possible?

࿇ Dating him also means that you get little spies—his brothers. And while Jibeom is the most normal about this, I feel like Jihan would be a little more mischievous. After all, he’s still a kid in his teens. God forbid he was curious about his hyung’s love life!

࿇ Jichang is the type to date to marry, so if he dated you.. sweetheart, you better be ready for a ring in the future.

Should I yume/selfship with Jax?? Is it ok to do so?/gen

Starting to have second thoughts since now ppl think that all Jax fans are misogynistic due to some ppl in the fandom being misogynistic towards Ragatha along with saying that Jax is getting in the way of their yuri ships(even tho u can still ship pomni and ragatha despite what’s going on just like how ppl are probably still shipping Jax and Ragatha together despite what’s going on in canon)and using twink as an insult and getting mad at Jax getting for getting a lot of merch. Yeah I agree that Ragatha should get more stuff than just one figurine but i don’t think it’s necessarily a reason to get mad at/blame Jax and is fans just cuz he may be popular.

That’s just how marketing works. Merch of popular beloved characters make more money. Im pretty sure Jax is one of goose’s favorites too if i remember correctly. They themselves even said that episode 5 was the most self indulgent one. I’m also seeing ppl saying that Jax is a misogynist which…yeah Jax is an asshole but I don’t necessarily think he’s a misogynist and or is at least nothing like the Andrew tates of the world.

HOWEVER I do agree the Jax is still a shitty person despite having reasons for acting the way he does and that it doesn’t justify what he does to everyone else along with agreeing that Ragatha shouldn’t be villainized nor labeled as abusive for standing up to Jax.

While I do think Ragatha shouldn’t have necessarily brought up Jax’s trauma related to his abstracted frog friend, I understand why she lashed out at him considering what he puts her and the rest of the cast through everyday.

Tho I’m kinda scared about selfshipping with Jax now cuz i don’t want ppl to think that I hate women just for having a male character as one of my faves-/gen

I know my account is to be a Heather Duke fan, but lately I’ve been so obsessed with Wicked (musical movie)! I just have to say, Elphaba Thropp is one of the best characters I’ve ever seen, she’s my 2nd fave character ever. I think Elphaba has too much potential, her character is just so good and I feel deeply connected and attracted to her in so many ways… That’s why it hurts me so much to know she might be ending up being with Fiyero or to know she has feelings for him. It’s something that really kills me. I don’t really understand why she would be with him. It’s not only ‘cause I love Gelphie and it’s my 2nd fave relationship. For real, I think they don’t have enough chemistry, maybe Elphaba developed feelings for him, but the fact that Fiyero only laid his eyes on her was because she rejected him when they met, he would be the guy who can’t stand that and needs to impress and make every girl fall for him, which is… disgusting. I’m sorry, but I think Fiyero and Elphaba would never work. Gelphie makes a lot more sense because their friendship doesn’t even look EXCLUSIVELY PLATONIC, they seem to care so much about each other, they seem to love each other. Their interactions look so fond and warm. Okay, Glinda seemed to be totally over heels for her… And at the end Elphaba wanted to be with her, to be a great team with her, not Fiyero. She wanted HER. For me that means Glinda was the one she actually had chemistry with. Not anyone else.

I’m hurt. Elphaba deserves better than Fiyero. She’s too much for someone like him.

I feel fandom would get along a lot better if there was mutual understanding that liking a character, agreeing with a character, and thinking the character is well constructed/executed are all separate (if often overlapping) positions, each with their separate tastes and subjectivities. Also: character portrayals are intended to make the audience feel things; this is separate from (if often overlapping with) analyzing/appreciating their actions and role in the story.
