Ok like kinda random sorry but this is a constant bit of brainrot I had and I saw you saying something sorta similar to it so here I am.

Also, sorry this is so long. I talk about this constantly but its one of my favorite things in concept and is super interesting and really gets me going. And also it's super frustrating

The way the larger dsmp fandom treats dream absolutely drives me nuts. Like, in my eyes, he's changed so much. Like, was he a good person when he was younger, no. But that is mostly due to his environment and then some continued ignorance, but that's normal. When you're raised to believe one thing, it takes a lot to unlearn. And he has. He isn't the same person he was when he was 16, even 20 y/o him is very different

But what drives me absolutely insane, especially as an ex-sbi main (I still love the cc's but the fandom is awful), Wilbur is Dream's foil.

So like, but foil I mean the English literature concept of two characters/people who are mirror images of each other but at some point made a slightly different desicion and therefore turned out different

Honestly there so much I could say about all this, like about the environment they were both raised in and how SBI and dteam as a whole are actually very interesting foils but this is just about Wilbur and Dream

Wilbur when he was Dream's age, was pretty much exactly like Dream. Just, not a good person, saying things he shouldn't and whatnot. Wilbur has said he doesn't like who he used to be. Wilbur changed, and his fans accept that.

But Wilbur stans will praise Wilbur as this morally better person, more *pure*. And he's not, he's the same if not maybe worse (I have a friend who is very disappointed in some of Wilbur's inaction when it comes to his friends but I never noticed this so I won't comment, just this might be a more general feeling)

Wilbur has the infamous line of "teenage girls can't enjoy anything" which great amazing agreed needs to be said.

But they sing a different time when Dream says that he supports stan and stan culture because stans get a bad rep. They say that stans are evil and are crazy and shouldn't exist. But teenage girls makeup a huge part of stan culture. Pick one. You don't get to cheer Wilbur and boo Dream for the same statement.

They look at Wilbur and see only good. And then they look at Dream and see only bad, when he was the same age as their precious golden boy when he made similar mistakes. The only difference being Dream was unfortunately more online and for Dream age 18 was only 5 years ago and for Wilbur that was 8 years ago.

This one has a little less meaning, but this opinion would get me flamed alive on twitter. I would rather listen to Roadtrip over all of Are You Alright. The only song I liked on there was cause for concern and they mixed it poorly.

And twitter would flame me for having an opinion cause it's Dream and Wilbur.

And it drives me insane. I hate it, your streamer is no better nor no worse than mine (sidenote, I hate the concept of morality among the streamers cause they're just people at the end of the day and yes some of them can turn sour but overall most streamers are pretty solid)

But it gets worse cause once, maybe end of summer 2021, a video surfaced of Wilbur saying the t-slur. And yes there was immediate backlash, but also there was "lets wait and see what Wilbur says" meanwhile for anything Dream does, there is no grace offered. The same people who extended an olive branch to Wilbur flames Dream alive and then refuses to listen to a word he says. I hate it, I hate that side of the fandom and what it's become.

Sorry for this mini-essay lmao. Honestly I could go on for hours about all of this but this is probably more than you wanted to read on a Friday night kekw

but also the point about are you alright is SO REAL like wilbur’s music/lovejoy is for the most part on my opinion a bit better written than a lot of the drusic both lyrically and in regards to like musical complexity or whatever but genuinely other than the last few things he’s put out, i’d listen to mask and road trip anyway because i hate the way wilbur uses his voice and i hate the way they’re mixed soooo much like i don’t get why they made the choices they did because so many of these songs sound good live!! but the recording is a mess

I truly believe Will Wood is an incredible musician and songwriter and is one of the top lyricists in the last decade both in and outside of the genres that he chooses to play in with absolutely zero irony. Sometimes I agonize and wonder late at night if my asshole aunt ever told my cousin that the main reason I didn’t finish college (outside of illness) and moved back to Maine was because she asked me to drop everything to come take care of him while she ran off to Arizona to hang out with her long distance rando boyfriend.

So I did. I was so sick but I dropped everything and moved so we could take care of him.

I dropped out of college one semester away from graduating, and we moved back to Maine, and made plans on how to take care of him, and made sure he could reconnect with his local friends and school. But then she changed her mind at the last fucking minute and tossed the kid on a plane all on his own for his first flight ever and when we protested and questioned this she threatened to have us arrested for kidnapping. Or that part of the reason she left the fucking state was the number of abuse reports piling up on her.

So like. Yeah. Probably didn’t mention any of that to him over the years. Or that the reason we lost contact originally was because she kept fielding my calls and starting shit when I wanted to talk to him. Do you think he knows that we dropped everything for him? That we always loved him, even later when he visited and pissed everyone off by riffling through everyone’s stuff and stole shit? Because teenagers gonna teenager. We gave up friends and school and a guaranteed job and everything to take care of him and be there for him because we love him and wanted good things for him, and she was the one who constantly went out of her way to fuck it all up. Or that the reason I didn’t want to stay in contact later was because our precious grandmother started doing the same bullshit and then started demanding I give him stuff that I use for my job as an artist and my only source or income? Because they just do that. They fuck everything up and hurt everyone in the process.

Does he know any of this?

Probably not.

My aunt, the word class liar that she is, probably made up some shit to make him think we cut him off for whatever reason. That it was our fault. Or even his fault.

And I’ll never really be able to tell him this. I’ve got all the screen shots from my conversations with her, but honestly… it won’t help him. Yeah, he’ll know we always loved him. But then he’ll have to look at the shit she would say about him. And the neglect. And the abuse. And the way she isolated him from all of us. But showing him her real face would just hurt him, and at this point all it would do is make things harder for him. And I don’t think I can do that to him. He’s had enough shit.

So I lay in bed at night thinking about it and how nothing will ever be fixed. He won’t ever know. She’ll get away with everything, just like she always does.

I don’t usually make posts like this, but I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-intellectual junk lately, and I really think we need to put the word “pretentious” up on a shelf until people learn what it actually means.

It doesn’t describe someone who likes artsy-fartsy deep meaning media. People who are pretentious are fake. They’re posers trying to be sophisticated and unique, not like other girls. They pretend to only like stuff they think will make them sound cool when they talk about it. They want to act like they know something you don’t, and they want attention for it.

By definition, if you genuinely enjoy something, you can’t be pretentious. If it resonates with you, and you analyze it, and you don’t care what people think, that’s the polar opposite, actually. If you love obscure experimental prog music, if you watch underground high concept indie films through English teacher eyes, if you spend hours in a modern art museum reading each piece as a vessel for storytelling, if your backpack’s full of poetry books that inspire you, if you play underrated games that were someone’s passion project, if you have an interest in studying the classics or the masters, you are not pretentious.

Of course, some people just don’t like some stuff, and that’s fine, but that’s not what this is about. Don’t let anti-intellectuals shame you for enjoying things just because your interests are inaccessible to them, because they refuse to be brave and put effort into critical thinking. You’re not stuck up for refusing to overlook the craft of artists.

the reason why bejeweled feels very calvin to me still is how it parallels high infidelity. in general, the 3am tracks seem to explore a darker, more explicit side of a storyline that’s already present, if only in the form of subtext (like we don’t have a direct parallel for wcs, but we do have two songs exploring formative past relationships vaguely sexually, and wcs is the darker example), on the main album, and bejeweled/high infidelity is perhaps the best example of this. its similarities to tolerate it, which is about something she felt ‘at one point in her life,’ back this up. HOWEVER, I do think it’s exploring a potential outcome of the then-current state of her relationship with joe. like, this is how things could go - I have forgotten that I have a man in the past, and I can do it again.

Puppets!! Costuming!!

Fungi the fox as a marionette! Warhorses like Carl and Spirit as massive two or three person puppets that can move and gesture and interact with the actors. Carl nibbles on Techno’s sleeve while he talks to Phil and Techno throws the horse a look. Henry is a similar large puppet, but Friend is a hand puppet Ghostbur (and later Tommy) carries.

The hound army works a lot like the stampede in the Lion King, and is just whatever stage crew and understudies are available, dressed in black or gray.

Also chats! Philza’s flock of crows, Eret’s ferret’s, Fundy’s clay figures, and other personifications of chat are puppets like the gazelles and birds in The Lion King. The puppets occasionally convey the audience’s commentary to the characters.

Some characters could even have elements of puppetry in their costuming! The BBH and Ranboo costumes have masks above the actor’s head’s to add height and an otherness to them!

Technoblade’s original piglin costume requires two skilled puppeteers, one on the other’s shoulders like a lion dancer, so sometimes the production just uses a pig skull mask and pink wig.

Sam is also a two actor character, so again sometimes the complicated animal features like his back legs are cut for simplicity. Sam Nook is a little plush hand puppet on Sam’s arm ^-^
