and here's some more details:

when i first heard faruzan's theme, i thought it sounded familiar and then i figured it reminded me a lot of heizou's. the rhythm pattern in the middle is the same - it occurs during heizou's cinematic E and the cycling through faruzan's many facial expressions in the middle of their respective trailers.

specifically, it's a syncopated rhythm with a descending melody which can be roughly transcribed as such

i was also very interested in the instruments used in each theme: heizou's uses this very expressive (almost sassy?) violin even though faruzan is a (very expressive, sassy) bow character! granted, bows have mainly been linked to harps in the game (venti, the stringless bow), but violins are played with bows so i guess that's what made me make that connection

anyways!! faruzan's theme is actually very fitting for her, from a musical standpoint:

the theme has an electronic sound to it - this could be related to her role and backstory - she's a mechanical researcher. also, her title is "eclectic machinist", which refers to someone operating machines

the primary instrument is this saxophone-esque synth hybrid - this represents other parts of her personality: namely, her age, and character. it sounds very funky and expressive, which is closely related to her feistiness and spunk as a character, and the choice of sax(-esque) sound could convey her "age", as the saxophone's prime was about 50-100 years ago (our time) - think roaring '20s or the big band era vs. today's hits. (side note: what i'm referring to heavily reminds me of the technique lin manuel miranda used in hamilton - while everyone was rapping '90s style, jefferson's songs were in the style of the '50s, to signify his backwards ideals, and how he'd been separated)

basically her theme fits her really well because it's a blend of old and electronic, which are two of her main traits according to the trailers and drip marketing, which is pretty cool :)

You are in for a HELL of a ride lemme tell you. It 100% consumed my brain the minute I started playing mostly cuz of how blown away I was with everything. The writing? Incredible. Music and sound design? Realllllly good, been listening to the ost on repeat. The visuals? Beyond interesting and super super cool. Mechanics and interactions? REALLY REALLY UNIQUE! Ouuugh

do you think slugcats actually wawa? It is a fairly popular fanon sure but I have been wondering for the last few days. We know slugcats must have some decent hearing - some of the map markers are explicitly the slugcat using its hearing to differentiate between other living creatures in other rooms and so on (although the actual passages they apparently just commit to the memory). Probably not as good as black lizard hearing but pretty good. However this part of gameplay as proof of canon worldbuilding might be taken with a grain of salt

that may suggest that audial communication between slugcats may actually be pretty hard to hear for humans - similar to how we cannot hear most of audible signals of various rodents. The problem is, well, it is a gameplay concession for the most part and tbh the way gameplay is integrated with worldbuiding - the devs made an attempt but the realization is imho wonky at best and misleading at worst.

back to wawas, we can try to draw a comparison between domestic cats and slugcats wherein meow is something mostly relegated to 'babytalk' and a specific type of call which some cats, especially those who grew up with humans, adopt for cat to human communication (with cats who grew up without much human interaction sometimes never taking up a habit of meowing even if they end up living with humans later on and actively engaging with them positively). In this case a wawa is a specific signal that is either used for example in danger (owing to how we hear a wawa like sound in one of the danger alert osts) or during communication with the young.

this assumes we take danger osts as actually symbolically reflective of something.

Howerver! While just like the map it seems to be largely a gameplay concession, most of slugcat out of cutscene (aka the gourmand ending slides) communication is reliant on body language. Pointing, jumping, things like that. Even with the pups we mostly interact via those things. Which... either suggests a dimension of pup interaction we do not see because of the gameplay limitations or we should take it as wawa not being a slugcat 'babytalk'.

Which leaves wawas with a very dubious space as a potential 'can be fit into canon' or not.

Oh I'm SO sorry, but I don't think slugcats wawa at all,,

I just think Rivulet ONLY can scream.

I think lore and gameplay are mostly done pretty well! For example the cycle mechanic is something you can only really theorize on if you look at both gameplay and lore. You get to experience the pain of cycles all on your own!

As for wawas.. as you have mentioned, they mostly use body language and art. Picture from Gourmand campaign ↓

Spearmaster draws too, and uses sign language to communicate with Suns. And I hear you. "Spearmaster is domesticated, they don't count" and you're right!

BUT

The fact they can learn such complicated sign language would imply they have the capacity for it in their brain to learn and memorize a language so complicated in the first place. Unless that was modified as well.

But it is more intuitive for slugcats to understand gestures than speech, which is why they need the mark of communication as they otherwise just hear incomprehensible garble. Their brains weren't made for many complicated noises. Yet when they DO have the mark they are capable of understanding extremely complicated sentences and such.

The wawas in threat themes are just the track not actual noise your slugcat makes. A lot of tracks have quite the bizarre sounds in them.

I think slugcats draw, point and jump to communicate. They're rodents that sign!

My only self-indulgent funny headcanon is.. as forementioned, that Rivulet can scream. There is no proof or basis for this. It's just incredibly creepy and funny to me.

Note; ah dw i love to receive your requests! actually i originally planned to write about armin bringing Y/n back to the airship, but i wasn't sure on the length so i just deleted like two paragraphs' worth of content 😂💀 also SRRY IF THIS IS AGONIZINGLY LONG but i had too much fun writing it while listening to the most dramatic aot ost lol

Armin's hands were trembling.

"You brought their god damn dog on board? Are you trying to kill us, Armin?!" Levi spat.

"Sir — " Armin choked. " — sir, I couldn't leave her to die. I'll accept the consequences for anything that happens from here — could... could you please stop holding her by the hair?" he asked nervously.

Levi's eyes became slitted with anger as they flitted between you and the blond, bloodied soldier. It required incredible strength to fight an Ackerman as a sword-wielding combatant, but with words it required an otherworldly courage.

"Sure." he said slowly, dangerously, and hauled your weight by the hair — a searing pain spread across your scalp.

Everything was a bit blurry, but you felt cool wind brush your face. You were high up... up in the sky? The Scout's airship door was slid open, turbulent airflow filled the gondola. You were forced into a kneel at the edge, too weak to fight back yet Levi still held apprehension in his chest because of you.

"Shall I let her hair go now?" Levi asked sarcastically.

"No!"

You saw Armin's eyes glaze over with fear, you heard him babbling desperately to his captain.

"If I toss her off this airship right now, I will sleep soundly tonight."

"Captain! Please hear me out!" Armin exclaimed desperately. "It would be senseless murder, she's no longer hostile! Like I said earlier, she could have killed me, but she didn't!"

A long silence ensued after his words, one impenetrably thick and jarringly apprehensive.

"Captain..." Armin's voice weakly punctured the silence. He sounded like he was using the last of his strained vocal chords to plead with Levi.

"She's their weapon. Don't mistake her docile behavior for surrender, Armin, she's just out of ammo after fighting."

"Captain."

"She's their weapon." Levi repeated through gritted teeth, "Unless you intend to keep her as such, I'm kicking her off right now."

Armin's mind buzzed for solutions as the longest silence yet ensued.

"C — can we bring her to Commander Hange first?" Armin asked.

After a small moment of begging, another silence ensued, one broken by the harsh and grating sound of your whimper as Levi flung your body in the opposite direction of the airship's exit.

Without regard for his comrade's bewildered stares, Armin rushed to you. "Are you okay?" he asked. The smallest head tilt from you was enough to settle Armin's high-strung nerves.

Levi let out a forfeiting sigh, "Sleep is for the wicked..." he grumbled under his breath. "Alright, let's take her to Hange and that mutt. Mikasa, come with us."

Now, you were supposed to be at your weakest — or so that's what Levi and Armin and the rest of their comrades in the gondola thought.

But when the door leading into the airship's control slid open to reveal Eren Jaeger, you lunged for him like a dragon.

Though he had quick reaction time, you clawed at him much faster than he could shield his face, resulting in three stripes of red across his cheek. He bore a grimace of wolf-like canines.

It required both Levi and Mikasa to restrain you while you thrashed around, but they didn't have to for long.

In your fit of blinded vengeance, you didn't notice a very familiar face sitting besides the owner of the Founding titan, whose hurt face healed over, whisps of steam rising out from your claw marks until they disappeared entirely.

"Stand down, Y/n." Zeke's voice penetrated the atmosphere.

You looked at him wide-eyed, utterly shaken.

"... War Chief?" you croaked confusedly.

But your confusion dissipated at once. Understanding dawned on your face, causing your features to be dragged down.

"Treacherous bastard!" you screamed piercingly, Armin winced. "I once revered you! Bastard! Bastard!"

You ran your foul mouth on the War Chief, calling him audacious, calling him vermin, calling him a lot of things until the atmosphere felt aflame; Armin stepped in with a voice smooth like flowing rivers.

"Stand down, Y/n." he commanded simply, and you obeyed like a dog. He knew something very important about you that you weren't even fully aware of.

See, when you bore witness to your War Chief's treachery, these invisible threads keeping you sewn to his command snapped. Armin could tell, so he played a little experiment, sort of like throwing a stray dog a bone — to see if it would go for it.

It surprised everyone else to see you cease at once after Armin told you to. His blue eyes brought a calming sensation over you. When you looked into them, it felt like you were being stared at by an angel, although that was laughably ironic, considering what people called Eldians in Marley.

"Commander Hange, I have a proposal to make." Armin stood to his superior confidently, while Hange willingly listened.

The air in the airship's gondola shook with celebratory roars from the Eldian soldiers, Floch at the center causing it all.

But packed away into the quiet area were Jean, Connie and Sasha.

"Like hell she's on our side... I'm sleeping with not just one eye open, but two eyes open 'till we get back on solid land." Connie huffed.

Jean looked over at him, "Connie... that just means you won't be sleeping, if you have two eyes open you're awake." he sighed at his friend's stupidity.

"I know! It was a joke — " he began, "Anyways. No one trusts that reaper, so why does Armin?"

Jean shrugged.

"I think she may genuinely be on our side." Sasha chimed, her tone lighthearted for the fact it was a very wild situation. The enemy who had slain countless people in the Eldian army was on their side?

"Seriously?!" Connie began argumentatively.

The door slid open. Jean's eyes spotted you as soon as you emerged.

You squeezed into the celebrating crowd of Eldian soldiers, without Armin by your side. In the other room, unbeknownst to the others, he was previously wiping blood off of your cheek with his handkerchief. He reared his pretty blue eyes at you, and softly commanded that you wait for him in the other room.

Now he remained in the control room, discussing the future with Hange and Levi, while you tried to discretely blend in with everyone else.

"Heya, nice 't have ya on our side." Sasha greeted you.

Because Floch flashed a hostile look your way, you decided to stay with these three.

The conversation staggered due to your blunt responses. But it ceased completely in a moment, a quick yet slow moment.

Your keen senses felt someone clamber onboard the airship, and your lightning reflexes shielded Sasha from taking her fated gunshot wound to the chest.

Wispy fumes curled up out of the shotgun's muzzle. At the end of the gun's neck was none other than your little sister, Gabi.

I was tagged by @sorry-bonebag and @bengiyo (thank you both!). It's funny to see so many folks talk about not having 10, when I had trouble narrowing it down 🤣 So, here are shows I've reached for for comfort recently, in no particular order:

Until We Meet Again. Listen, I get that it's depressing, but it also ends and mends the intergenerational trauma set up in the first 15 minutes, and in the Dean/Pharm storyline the show queues up typical drama problems just for everything to be fine, it is SO comforting. And if I need to cry, ep1 part 1 will get me there, guaranteed.

Azumanga Daioh. This show...is so weird lol. It's a 20-year-old anime at an all-girls high school. There is a 10-year-old prodigy, a weirdo transfer student, a butch beauty, a simp, a loud class clown...it's not exactly GL because the girl who has a massive crush on her classmate never does anything about it and that's not really the plot. There is no actual plot, it's extremely slice-of-life except when it ventures into absurdity. It's extremely quiet and chill for this reason. The stakes are so low!

Star Trek: The Original Series. Like Ben, I am a Star Trek fan forever. TOS is my favourite and I've rewatched... a lot. Rather than the stakes being low, they're high but everyone is exceptionally competent and can solve impossible situations. And I really, deeply love the problem-of-the-week style storytelling and found family vibes.

What Did You Eat Yesterday? Everyone already knows this one, it's so good. Their relationship is so wonderful and the food is delicious and inspiring. In this show, things aren't perfect and that's ok, and I get deep comfort out of that.

HIStory 2: Crossing the Line. I love a sports anime, and this hits the key notes: you have to have love for the game and play with integrity and with your team in mind, and never give up on your dream. And this installation was pretty short, so easy to binge.

Our Dating Sim. This is recent but I've already decided to go back and rewatch this rather than start something new at least twice, so I'm counting it. Something about how these two settle into the friends to lovers dynamic is just delightful their familiarity and ease transfers to me through the screen.

Ingredients the series. Everyone calls this our pandemic comfort commercial for a reason. I have rewatched it a LOT. It is incredibly domestic and very chill, and once again full of good food. It helps that the episodes are so short so again, it's an easy binge.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (series). Another one that lands on multiple people's lists. This show is incredible and has such good character arcs. I will never get over how perfect the change in Zuko was handled. This one is partially comforting because of how long it's been in my life and how many times I've watched it, but also the found family vibes and the problem of the week format once again is very comforting to me.

Love Sick. I know. But it is the first BL I saw, and it stuck with me. I usually skip around the BL cut when I go back to this (which I still do). Pun and Noh spend a lot of time together in silence or with the OSTs playing, and do a lot of talking in body language and eye contact. Even though they're young and awkward and things are unresolved for so long, when they're together just the two of them this show (and their relationship) is easy and comforting.

60s Batman. There are several sitcoms that I would watch an episode or two if it's on (Frasier, the Nanny, Third Rock from the Sun, Golden Girls, Schitt's Creek), but the Adam West Batman is just... incredible. It is so silly. It is so earnest. It was ahead of its time. And once again, that problem of the week storytelling with incredibly competent characters is deeply comforting to me.

A week into your new role at HYBE, you've started to settle into the rhythm of your responsibilities. With Jinji working from home, you're now stationed in his office, a space that's gradually becoming more familiar each day.

Today's agenda begins with a task that seems straightforward enough: delivering scripts to Yoongi for his upcoming press conference.

As you approach Yoongi's studio, the door slightly ajar, the distinct sound of a beat being crafted flows out into the hallway, drawing you in. It's the background music for the OST he's working on, a project that's been the buzz of the building.

Pausing at the threshold, you listen for a moment, the complexity and depth of the composition striking a chord within you.

Knocking lightly before entering, you find Yoongi immersed in his work, headphones on, his focus evident in his furrowed brow and the way his fingers dance over the mixing board. He looks up, a bit startled, as you step inside, the scripts in hand.

"I've got the scripts for the upcoming press conference," you announce, placing them on a nearby surface.

Yoongi nods, offering a brief "Thanks," before his attention returns to the music. But as you're about to leave, something in the melody catches your ear—a minor discord that seems to beg for resolution.

Hesitating, you turn back to Yoongi, noticing a hint of frustration in his demeanor, a sign he's been grappling with this very section. 

"Um, Yoongi-ssi," you begin, hesitating for just a moment. "The track is incredible, but there's a section where maybe...," you trail off, not wanting to overstep but feeling compelled to share your thought.

Seeing his intrigued yet cautious expression, you take a small step forward. "May I?" you ask, gesturing toward the headphones. With a nod from Yoongi, you slip them on, the music enveloping you, its details even more pronounced now.

"It's just here," you say, pointing to a segment on the screen. "Maybe it could go something like this?" Without thinking, you hum out a melody, a bridge that could seamlessly connect the disjointed verse, your voice steady and clear.

Yoongi's expression shifts from skepticism to consideration, his eyes narrowing as he replays the section, then listens to your suggestion again. A moment of silence hangs in the air, heavy with anticipation, and after observing Yoongi's contemplative expression, you immediately take it as disapproval.

Your mind races with thoughts of having overstepped your boundaries, and you can't help but feel a surge of panic at the thought of making a misstep so early in your role.

With a wave of anxiety washing over you, you instantly regret voicing your suggestion. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to overstep. Please ignore me," you stammer, your confidence evaporating as quickly as it arrived.

With a flurry of bows, more awkward than respectful, you mumble a string of apologies. "I just thought—sorry, it won't happen again," you add, your voice laced with embarrassment. Placing the folder containing the scripts beside Yoongi with a little too much haste, you make a beeline for the door, eager to escape what you perceive as an uncomfortable situation.

Once outside, you take a deep breath, mentally chastising yourself for the impromptu input. "You're doing too much, Y/N, calm down..." you mutter under your breath, a reminder to keep your observations to yourself in the future.

Meanwhile, back in the studio, Yoongi watches your hasty retreat with a hint of amusement in his eyes. Despite your apparent nervousness, the melody you hummed lingered in his mind, a curious and unexpected interjection that sparked his interest.

After a moment's hesitation, curiosity wins out, and he decides to give your suggestion a try.

Adjusting the track, Yoongi integrates your hummed melody into the section, his skilled fingers working the controls with ease. As the new bridge fills the studio, blending seamlessly with the surrounding verses, a surprised smile creases his lips.

It works—better than he'd anticipated. The track now flows with a newfound cohesion, the awkward jump smoothed over by the melody you provided.

Leaning back in his chair, Yoongi allows himself a moment of appreciation for the serendipitous contribution. "Not bad," he murmurs, a nod to your unexpected talent and a mental note that perhaps, just perhaps, there's more to you than meets the eye.

The next day, while engrossed in your tasks, you're startled when Yoongi's personal assistant approaches your desk, a serious yet gentle expression on her face. "Yoongi-ssi would like to see you in his studio," she informs you, an undercurrent of something unspoken in her voice that piques your curiosity.

As you enter Yoongi's studio, the air is filled with a different kind of energy, quieter and more introspective. Yoongi greets you with a nod, motioning for you to take a seat.

You sit, nervously fidgeting under his scrutinizing gaze. The room feels heavy with unspoken expectations, making your heart race.

Yoongi breaks the silence, his voice steady. "Have you ever considered producing?" he asks, eyes locked on yours.

You're caught off guard, a flurry of thoughts racing through your mind. "P-Producing? Me? No, I've never really thought about it," you stutter out, your voice trailing off as you avert your gaze, feeling out of your depth.

Yoongi huffs lightly, a hint of impatience or perhaps curiosity in his tone. He leans over, pressing a button on his console.

Suddenly, the familiar tune from the previous day fills the room, but now there's an additional layer—a subtle melody that you recognize as your own humming from yesterday. The integration is seamless, adding a new depth to the piece.

Your eyes widen in surprise, a mix of pride and disbelief washing over you. "That's... that's the melody I hummed," you murmur, almost to yourself, amazed at how your casual hum has been transformed into a part of this beautiful composition.

Seeing your surprise, Yoongi leans back, a slight smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "See? You have a good ear. It's not just about playing instruments or knowing music theory. It's about feeling the music, understanding it. You did that instinctively."

His words resonate with you, stirring a newfound confidence. Perhaps there's more to your connection with music than you've allowed yourself to acknowledge.

Yoongi's expression softens, his demeanor shifting as he shares a piece of his own story. "At first, I was skeptical about Bang PD-nim's plan," he admits, "thinking it was just about appeasing some rich man's daughter. But then I learned you're Yuuji's sister."

"Your brother, was someone I admired," Yoongi continues, his voice tinged with a mix of nostalgia and admiration. "His passion, his music, his fight with cancer—I respected him greatly. It inspired me, especially when I was just starting out. So knowing you're his sister... it feels like fate's way of connecting dots."

After a moment of silence, Yoongi extends an unexpected offer. "How about you try your hand at this? Help me with some lyrics or beats for the OST. No pressure, just explore and see where it takes you."

The offer feels like a lifeline, an opportunity to delve into the world Yuuji loved, to contribute in a way you'd never imagined. Nodding, you reply, a mixture of excitement and determination in your voice. "I'd...I'd like to try. Thank you, Yoongi-ssi."
