admittedly, Leona is a little... put off. at least, he is at first. he doesn't exactly have a great relationship with his own brother, and with no other examples to go off of, it feels kind of like an insult

Do yoh happen to have any resources for how to write a stripper character? In my novel idea the stripper character is a secondary character more meant to teach the protag that the world is filled with just as much beauty as there is cruelty and will eventually take in the protag after they escape their creator's clutches at the very end of the novel (Frankenstein inspired)

Writing A “Story B” Lead Character

Hello! First of all, thank you for this beautiful question. I know your question started by asking about how you should craft a stripper character, but I would like to pay more attention to the function that your stripper character is serving – the Story B Lead. 

What is a Story B Lead? Simply put, they are characters that lead the side plot in any story – most typically, the love interest (if you have a romantic side arc, the most typical type of Story B). 

The main job of the Story B Lead is:

Give the readers a break from the main plot. Story B shouldn’t be as serious or daunting as Story A — let your hero have some fun, explore new things, and find love while he figures out how to fight the big bad boss.

Convey the theme of the story. The easiest example is the love interest in superhero stories. When the hero is too focused on the fight, the love interest often provides a new perspective to find the critical clue or make the hero realize there are more important things than chasing power. 

Be a part of the sucko ending. Whether your Story B has a happy or sad ending, the conclusion of all the fun the hero has must supplement the main story’s ending in some way. 

So, let’s construct your stripper character based on the criteria outlined. 

Give her a backstory that will hit the protagonist differently. Think about the relevance of the stripper in your protagonist’s character arc. Is she someone your protagonist can look up to? What was her struggle of living as someone’s creation? Does your protagonist fear that they will become like her? 

Make her attractive, fun, quirky. Story B is where we get to stress a bit less about the main conflict to explore more of the story world. Use your stripper character to show what it means to be a creation – do other strippers alienate her? Physical quirks? Some things only she can do because she was “created”, not “born”?

Give her a thematic statement that summarizes what she stands for. For example, she may say: “Some say that beauty is terror. I say there’s beauty in the most terrible things.” as she drags a crying protagonist onto a packed stage. 

Don’t let her drag your protagonist around. Taking in the protag sounds like a fully closed happy ending, but remember that your protagonist must choose to be with your side characters – not the other way around.

So the scarring discourse is still going.

No, characters keeping scars does not automatically equate to that being torture porn. In this context, fans clearly intend it in a way that says "even if you end up with physical marks, it doesn't diminish you". Or is Aang getting scarred torture porn too? Or do you think things like Mortal Engines movie shrinking the female lead's facial damage to a minimum "spared her of physical trauma"? No, it was afraid of depicting something deemed "ugly" and it's a huge disservice to real people who look like she was described in the book.

The topic was not handled super well in ATLA. Katara's wounds got healed leaving no trace on her, on her psyche nor on how she views Aang which is not just unrealistic, but you can literally feel in the show Katara having to go "no Aang it's ok, I'm fine, you don't have to beat yourself up over it, I'm healed, let it go Aang, it's not your fault," it is too much. It would have been much stronger had the burns left some mark, even a tiny one, because then Aang's reluctance to practice firebending would have made more sense and all characters would have gotten a more solid demonstration that the Avatar can be dangerous too. It would have been a wakeup call to Katara that Aang isn't a completely harmless kid she can always shield and protect. That's character development! This would have been a more powerful moment in the progression of their relationship, especially after they sort it out and Aang learns safe firebending later on, because they'd have a more real problem to overcome rather than just Aang's guilt.

Again, show didn't frame things too cleverly - there's no heightened moment of perhaps Katara being extremely happy that she discovered a part of her lost Southern waterbending heritage (just remember her behaviour with Hama, there's none of that here). The show just removes her wounds, she's confused about the ability, and this leads to Jeong Jeong making a point about how fire is wild and destructive. The whole segment ends with removing the source of the problem (wounds) and is about how evil fire is. Aang ends up being traumatized anyway, he isn't less traumatized because Katara's wounds didn't scar.

The point is - Katara gets nothing character-building out of this event, even though it made her cry and cradle her arms for several minutes on screen. Because of this her burns could be considered torture-porn (slightly). Her discovering healing abilities is not a reward she got exclusively because she suffered the burns, she could have discovered it by accidentally hurting herself, or healing someone else. Imagine if Aang hurt himself by being reckless and Katara discovering she could heal him? What she should have gotten out of specifically being burned by Aang, is a changed view of him. I don't mean her viewing him negatively, but taking a step back and both learning they should be more careful. Who said zutara stans want Katara getting scarred by Aang in order to make Aang a villain in this? He literally cannot be a villain here, he made a big mistake by being careless. It's got nothing to do with zutara. It's not helpful to misinterpret some storytelling tools that have nothing to do with shipping, just to prevent them from creating some later story hooks which could potentially be used in shipping a NOTP. Heck, Katara getting scarred could even be used (with skilled writing) in shipping her with Aang - like zutara fans use Katara being angry at Zuko and expecting him to demonstrate that he wouldn't betray or hurt them again.

And if you have a distaste for two happy friendly characters hurting each other on accident, that's fine, but well I have a scar on my arm from my brother's scratch that happened on accident. These things happen and stories shouldn't be scared of portraying it, especially if later on they show how to make ammends and overcome the problem. I'm not saying "Katara should definitely have kept her scars!!!" I am showing narrative weak points and suggestions how things could have been done differently, what benefits it could have had character-wise and what that might have changed.

Giggling at your and anon wishing instead for OPTIONS for Fanny. I was thinking it's odd that Ms. Austen decided that her crush on Edmund was reciprocated at the end when she could've been given justice of some sort with how she's been looked and talked over.

It feels like she's out of choices but then I suppose she is out of choices in the end. This is kind of controversial, for me and I'm not really a fan of this concept myself tbh, but it'll be kind of a fanfictiony story like the Bridgerton with the society being a little more lenient (lol?); because it's a mixed boarding school

The plot is basically all the stuff in the Austen og universe but they're not all the same, the ages can be tweaked a bit lol, with some plot tangled with the other stories but they're leading to the same endings like, so.....

Catherine doesn't marry while studying, but she keeps talking about the Tilneys because she has a penpal whom she met in Bath before school started, she didn't realize that said penpal has a sister who studies in the same school

Catherine's really that student that just spent most of her time in the library, not studying per se, reading novels, she often has to be told to focus in class for daydreaming

and then one summer vacation spends the entire break at Northanger Abbey,

Later, after new semester starts, Lydia tells her sister in an offhand remark that Catherine seemed really down and her visit to Northanger seemed to be the reason.

Her studies decline even more when she was upset about the whole Gen Tilney situation and one evening she goes to their dorm matron to ask for advice; that's Anne, and there Catherine finds a crying Lucy Steele who had just been visited by Fanny Dashwood and basically well, verbally harassed by a visiting older sister of Edward Ferrars

My friend was adamant we either pair up Fanny Price with an oc (original character) or with~~ Colonel Fitzwilliam, who, in this AU of ours is an exchange student, same with Mr. Willoughby

Willoughby is an exchange student for a year who got attached to Marianne, and then gradually stops replying to her letters after he left their school. Colonel Brandon is one of the school beneficiaries

One of the classes go for a trip to Lyme with Captain Wentworth as one of the guides and that's where Louisa smacks her head and later fellow poetry club member Benwick falls for her (or not! I'm also not comfortable with this pairing tbh.Louisa had a one-sided crush on Capt Wentworth)

I'm sorry this is sooooo long. My friend and O kept going at it from the side of the female characters only tbh and we didn't quite know where to put Darcy and Bingley. Are they students? Or older students visiting from Oxford? Horse riding enthusiasts and club members, sharing a hobby with Elizabeth? We don't know 😂

X-Men characters dropping everything to care for you after you accidentally burn your finger while cooking.

Emma Frost:

- Cooking is not exactly something Emma Frost does often. She prefers to indulge in fine dining and luxurious meals, but when she’s with you, she’s always willing to try something new. Tonight, you’ve convinced her to cook with you, and as you’re handling the pan, you accidentally burn your finger. The sharp hiss of pain escapes your lips, and before you can blink, Emma is right next to you, her ice-blue eyes narrowing in concern.

- “Darling, what have you done now?” she asks, her tone a mixture of exasperation and worry. Emma takes your hand delicately, inspecting the small burn with her usual no-nonsense demeanor. Though she may come off as cold to others, with you, her touch is gentle and caring. She doesn’t hesitate to use her telepathy to ease your pain, her powers making the sting fade almost instantly.

- “Honestly, Y/N, I leave you alone for a second, and this happens,” she says, though there’s a teasing smile on her lips. Emma is always in control, always poised, and she’s quick to remind you that you don’t have to suffer for the sake of a simple meal. “Next time, just let me order something, alright? You’re far too precious to be getting hurt over something as trivial as cooking.”

- With a wave of her hand, she mentally summons a first aid kit, expertly wrapping your burn with precision. Emma leans down, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead before pulling you close. “Now, let’s forget about this kitchen disaster, and I’ll spoil you with something better,” she suggests, her tone sultry and affectionate. She may be the Ice Queen to everyone else, but with you, Emma’s love is warm and undeniable.

Mystique (Raven Darkhölme):

- Cooking with Mystique is always an unpredictable experience. She likes to change things up—sometimes literally transforming into someone else just to mess with you. Tonight, though, you’re trying to focus on making dinner, when a sudden burn on your finger causes you to drop the spatula with a small cry of pain. Raven, who had been lounging nearby in her usual laid-back manner, immediately perks up.

- “What did you do now?” she asks, already moving to your side. Her voice is teasing, but you can see the flicker of concern in her eyes as she takes your hand. Mystique is never one to fuss over injuries, but when it comes to you, she’s surprisingly tender. Her fingers, though calloused from years of fighting, are gentle as they inspect the burn.

- “You’ve got to be more careful, Y/N,” she chides, though her lips curl into a smirk. You can never tell if Mystique is more amused by your clumsiness or genuinely concerned, but either way, she tends to you with a practiced ease. She pulls a small ice pack from the freezer and presses it against your hand, her sharp yellow eyes watching your reaction closely.

- “I swear, if you keep hurting yourself like this, I’m going to start cooking in disguise so you won’t know it’s me,” she jokes, but there’s an underlying softness in her tone. Mystique is rarely vulnerable with anyone, but with you, she lets her guard down just enough to show how much she cares. She wraps an arm around your waist, pulling you into her lap. “Now, let’s see if I can’t finish this up without you burning yourself again, huh?” she murmurs against your ear, a rare moment of playfulness between the two of you.

Warren Worthington III (Angel):

- Warren always insists on helping you in the kitchen, his wings making it both a challenge and an endearing sight as he moves around. He loves spending quiet, domestic moments with you, and tonight, as you’re both cooking dinner, you accidentally brush your finger against a hot pan. The sudden sting makes you wince, and Warren’s wings twitch as he immediately senses something is wrong.

- “Y/N, are you alright?” he asks, already by your side, his feathers rustling in concern. His usually confident demeanor falters when he sees the burn on your finger, and he quickly takes your hand, his brow furrowed with worry. Warren may be an angel, but he’s fiercely protective when it comes to you, and seeing you hurt—even slightly—makes his heart race.

- “Let me take care of that,” he says, his voice soft as he guides you to the sink, running your hand under cool water. Warren’s touch is always so gentle, as if he’s afraid of hurting you, and he watches you closely to make sure you’re alright. “You should’ve let me handle that,” he adds with a small, concerned smile.

- Once your burn is taken care of, Warren wraps his arms around you, his wings folding protectively behind him as he pulls you close. “I don’t like seeing you hurt, even if it’s something small like this,” he murmurs into your hair, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. You can feel the warmth of his body, and the way his wings cocoon you makes you feel safe and loved. “Let me take care of dinner from here, alright? I’ll finish up while you relax.” Warren may be a powerful mutant, but with you, he’s always the doting partner, ready to swoop in at a moment’s notice.

Bobby Drake (Iceman):

- Cooking with Bobby is always a fun, chaotic affair. He loves to joke around, often using his ice powers to cool things down when the heat in the kitchen gets too intense. Tonight, you’re both having a great time, laughing and talking, when you accidentally burn your finger on the stove. Bobby freezes mid-laugh when he hears you gasp in pain.

- “Whoa, whoa, what happened?” he asks, rushing over to you with a concerned look. His playful demeanor shifts immediately as he takes your hand, inspecting the burn with wide eyes. “Y/N, you gotta be careful!” he says, though there’s a hint of teasing in his voice as he gently encases your finger in a small layer of ice to numb the pain.

- Bobby has a way of lightening any situation, and even now, as he tends to your burn, he’s cracking jokes to make you smile. “See, this is why I’m here—to keep things cool,” he quips with a grin, though his concern is still evident in the way he carefully treats your injury. “Can’t have my favorite person getting hurt on my watch.”

- Once your burn is feeling better, Bobby wraps an arm around your shoulders, pulling you into a side hug. “Alright, I’ll take over from here,” he declares, using his powers to chill the stovetop for good measure. “How about you just sit there and look cute while I finish dinner? Deal?” He gives you a playful wink, and though he’s acting casual, you know Bobby would do anything to make sure you’re happy and taken care of. Even when things go wrong in the kitchen, Bobby is always there to bring a little bit of light—and a lot of ice—to the situation.

Kitty Pryde:

- Cooking with Kitty is always an adventure, as her ability to phase through objects means you’ve both had some close calls with kitchen tools disappearing into countertops. Tonight, you’re making a simple dinner together when you accidentally touch the hot pan. The sharp pain makes you wince, and Kitty phases through the kitchen island to get to you in an instant.

- “Y/N, are you okay?” she asks, her big brown eyes wide with concern as she grabs your hand. She’s usually so playful, but the moment she sees the small burn on your finger, she goes into full-on worried mode. Kitty can sometimes be a bit of a worrier when it comes to you, and right now, you can see it in her expression.

- “Here, let me fix that,” she says, leading you over to the sink and running cool water over your burn. She’s gentle but quick, her fingers brushing against yours as she checks to make sure you’re okay. “You know, I can phase you through the stove next time,” she jokes with a soft smile, trying to lighten the mood.

- Once the burn is treated, Kitty pulls you in for a hug, pressing a kiss to your temple. “You gotta be more careful, alright?” she says softly, her arms wrapped around you. Wanda Maximoff:

- Wanda loves to cook with you, and her magic often makes things easier, but tonight, you insisted on doing it without her help. As you’re moving a pan, your finger brushes against the hot surface, and the sharp sting makes you flinch. Wanda, who had been setting the table, immediately rushes to your side, her eyes wide with concern.

- “Y/N, what happened?” she asks, her Sokovian accent slipping through as she takes your hand. Wanda is incredibly protective of you, and the sight of your burn makes her worry. “Let me help,” she says softly, her fingers glowing with a soft red hue as she uses her magic to ease the pain in your hand.

- Wanda’s magic flows gently through you, the warmth soothing the burn instantly. “You shouldn’t be hurting yourself over this,” she whispers, her voice full of concern as she looks into your eyes. There’s a deep tenderness in Wanda’s gaze, and you can tell she’s upset that you’ve gotten hurt, even if it’s just a small burn.

- Cooking with Laura is usually a quiet affair. She’s not one to talk much while she focuses, but she enjoys spending this time with you. Tonight, as you’re working together, you accidentally touch a hot pan, and the sharp pain causes you to yelp. Laura’s eyes snap to you in an instant, her protective instincts kicking in immediately.

- “Let me see,” she says, her voice calm but firm as she gently takes your hand in hers. Laura may be tough and guarded, but when it comes to you, she’s surprisingly tender. She inspects the burn with narrowed eyes, her brow furrowed in concern as she runs your finger under cold water.

- “You need to be more careful,” she mutters, though her tone isn’t angry—it’s worried. Laura has always been protective of you, and the thought of you getting hurt, even in a small way, makes her anxious. She grabs a bandage from the cabinet, carefully wrapping your finger with gentle precision, her touch soft despite her rough exterior.

- Once your burn is taken care of, Laura pulls you close, her arms wrapping around you in a rare display of affection. “I don’t like seeing you hurt,” she admits quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. She holds you for a moment longer before giving you a small smile. “Let me finish dinner. You’ve done enough for today,” she says, her tone soft but insistent. Staring up at the large castle, she pressed her lips into a thin line of worry. Her forehead wrinkles a bit. She glanced over at her wife who just seemed excited to be here. She sighed softly before shifting their son in her arms. This didn’t feel right, but at least they wouldn’t have to pay rent or anything too tedious. She must be respectful too, this was her wife’s lineage after all. This was a part of her wife’s family. She gently felt a hand on her back, her eyes moving over to her loving wife.

“It’s beautiful love..” Her voice came out soft so as to not spook their easily crying son. Alcina seemed delighted at her wife’s words, she gently moved to hug her wife’s waist. Pressing her chin against the woman’s shoulder. “I know it looks a bit rough but.. it can be somewhere he can grow without worry. It can be somewhere for us to live together for years to come without being casted away for our marriage..”

The shorter female nodded her head as she looked at her wife. She pressed a small kiss to her wife’s lips as a breeze blew by. This breeze spooked the little one as he started to do that pre-cry where his little lip would start to shiver and soft whimpers would leave him. She sighed a bit at this, not wishing for their son to start wailing right there. She didn’t like to admit it but he tired her out sometimes. Sometimes it was hard to feel a connection to him.

Alcina seemed to notice their son's shiver. She gently nodded her head and moved to grab a key from her bag. “Come. Let’s head inside, it’s getting late and I don't want Callum getting sick.” 

The other woman nodded her head as she moved to follow after her wife up to the steps. Her wife unlocked the door then moved to step inside, holding the door open for the shorter female. She slightly shuffled on her feet as she stepped inside to the corridor. It was nice, dusty but nice. Yet she could still feel that small shiver running up her back. The feeling of someone watching her was at an all time high.. It was an old castle, of course it’d give her the creeps. Also adding to the fact that it was towards the end of the day. So she couldn’t see much, especially with the curtains covering the windows.

Her wife slightly pressed a hand on her lower back, leaning down to mumble in her ear. “I’ll go find some candles. They’re bound to have one somewhere around here.”

The shorter female nodded her head, watching her wife turn to go walk down the hall. Alcina had always been the more brave type. Whilst she never was, hell she often felt scared of her own shadow. A small gurgle came from the baby, her eyes looked down at him. A soft smile on her lips. She took in a breath, shifting on her body weight. “I know.. This is quite odd, but I'm sure we’ll settle in once our stuff arrives. Along with all your toys.”

She slightly moved to take a step over to a bookshelf, her free hand slightly running over the dust. A soft sigh left her. They’d have to get this clean.. She wouldn’t want Callum falling ill. Her eyes slightly trailed over the books, squinting a bit through the darkness to find a book that was child appropriate. Half of these she hadn’t even heard off. Rich people..

She shook her head before noticing a familiar book. It wasn’t exactly baby appropriate in her eyes, but it’d have to do. She moved to grab the book, sliding it out of its spot. A soft breath left her as she moved to walk over to the steps, sitting down with Callum to wait for Alcina. She didn't exactly feel comfortable walking off into the castle without her wife by her side. It probably wouldn’t be safe either. Lord knows how many broken pieces of wood or steps there were. Her soft voice filled the air as she started to read to Callum softly. Hoping the story would calm his small whimpers which would eventually lead to cries. 

She continued to read until a voice spoke up. By the time Alcina got back, she had her nose in the book with Callum in her arms. It was hard to see until a light came up by the book. Her eyes looked up to see Alcina's eyes which had a slight shine of gold in them, illuminated by the fire. Alcina smiled warmly at the sight of her wife reading to their son.

“Maria.. dear, sorry it took so long. It got darker in the main hall, so it took me a bit longer.”

Maria’s eyes looked up at her wife and just offered a soft smile with a nod. She moved to close the book before standing with a slight breath. Her eyes drifted over to the chamberstick in her wife's hand, candle burning to add some light to the dark area. 

“It’s alright.. I am quite glad you're back. I was worried you had gotten lost. That I would have to go myself to find you.”

“Ah well, it is a good thing you did not. This castle is not exactly in the best shape for a woman with a baby to traverse alone in the dark.” Alcina mumbled softly, she pressed a soft kiss to her wifes temple. Adoration always seemed to be present in her eyes ever since their first meeting. 

Walking into the main hall, it was quite the mess. Dust covering a lot of the surface, furniture covered up by white sheets. She slightly moved to hand Callum to Alcina and grabbed the chamberstick as well. She then walked over to the staircase, peering up it. Her slightly tanned hand sliding over the woodwork that was most likely very expensive to have made. Her lips pressed into a soft line. A breath leaving her. The candle provided some light to see it. A question then came from her lips.

“ ‘Cina.. can we afford this all? It is obviously going to need quite the work to fix up.. And that costs..”

Her wife chuckled a bit at Maria’s question, head tilting to the side with a smile spreading on her unpainted lips for once. She moved to walk over softly. Her arms securely holding Callum as she looked down at her wife, dipping down a bit to press a soft kiss to her lips. Her words came out softly. “Do not worry of that.. I shall handle it.”

Maria raised an eyebrow at her wifes words. What could she possibly mean with that cryptic ass phrasing? At this point, every question she had asked Alcina pertaining to how she acquired the castle or even the means to move had been deflected. She was not the type to push but it was really beginning to become questionable.

Instead they just decided to take a small look around the lower floor. Maria had left their son with Alcina for the moment as she headed towards two double doors, pushing one open. Her eyes glanced around what she could only assume to be the dining room. A white sheet covered the table lazily, the chairs were covered as well. She walked around the table and over to the windows, she tilted her head as she looked out at the outer courtyard. Perhaps she could meet with some of the mothers in the village. She still wanted Callum to have friends after all. 

Alcina herself was walking around the main hall, the six month old sitting in her arms. Looking at her with wondering eyes. She slightly glanced down at him with a slight breath. “We’re going to have to see if we can find you a cradle or something.. Your other mother is dead set on you having your own bed, she doesn’t believe in bed sharing. Can not really blame her though.” Alcina’s eyes then noticed another candle. She moved to grab the matches out of her pocket, lighting the candle before grabbing the chamberstick. She moved to then head upstairs carefully, not wishing to fall with the baby and chamber stick in hand. Callum was always fairly calm with her, much more so than with Maria. It wasn’t hard to see how much her wife often struggled to wish to be near the baby. It was a push-pull situation, especially with the heightened emotions ever since the birth. Maria would never admit it, but Alcina pays attention enough to see it all. To see when the shorter female would need moments to herself or would be on the verge of a breakdown, so it took Alcina slipping in to handle Callum for her wife.

By the time Maria went to find her wife, Alcina was back sitting in the main hall on a couch she had uncovered. Callum was peacefully asleep in her arms as she was flipping through a book. A soft breath left her lips as Maria set her own chamberstick on a nearby shelf. She then moved to sit next to her wife. “This place is too big..” Alcina let a laugh slip through her lips as she looked at Maria with a raised eyebrow.

“If i'm correct there is still an entire basement and another part to the castle.” At these words, Maria looked over at her wife almost like she was insane. What in the hell would they do with all this space? She would have just been fine with a small house, maybe a wrap around porch. She did not grow up exactly well off so she wasn’t used to such space. She sighed before laying her head on Alcina’s shoulder. A small frown pulling at her lips. Soft brown eyes glancing around the room then over to the lit fireplace. “Did you light the fireplace?” Maria mumbled softly. Her words made her wife look over, a slight shake of her head before looking back at the book. 

Maria’s eyes drifted back to the fireplace in confusion. The fire flickering against her skin as she sat up a bit. Great, welcome to wonderland where fires light themselves.

like. when Chloe killed Frank i (, personally,) feel like her guilt from it was less because she killed Frank, and More because she Killed Someone (and their dog).

but!!! thats not to say she didnt feel guilty for killing Frank. because she definitely did. because on some level. despite everything. despite all of his shitty behavior. a part of her still cared for him. that tiny 15-17ish year old part in her still cared for him.

because that 15-17ish year old with intense abandonment issues in her only had. a small handful of people in her life that actually cared for her, and when THOSE few people aren’t even doing the best job at it— it’s no shit that Chloe’s standards for Good Friends are going to be Immensely dropped.

and so. it’s kind of like what happened with Rachel, but WAY less intense. when she found someone who didn’t hate her, and was willing to hang around her—after so so long of people hating her and not wanting to be around her— it makes sense that part of her would kinda latch onto them a little bit.

and so, even after all of the shit she’s learned he did— even when Frank starts to hate her— even when he threatens Max and her’s lives— part of her keeps remembering him as one of the few guys who stuck around when no one else did.

it’s just that. no matter how bad the person— if you’ve known someone for years, and they were one of the only nice people to you in a town where theres like. four people that are nice to you— it’s gonna hurt if you kill them. even if it was self defense. even if it was entirely their own fault— even if you two aren’t on even remotely good terms anymore.

ESPECIALLY for such a sentimental person like Chloe. taking that in consideration it makes me wonder. maybe she didn’t feel bad for killing Frank. maybe she felt bad for killing the person Frank used to be to her. but maybe she realized that That Frank already died long ago.

not the only ask I've gotten about this and... look, rather than doing a proper write up that would take forever, I'm just gonna give my top ten fun... facts? bits of trivia. tidbits related to the two of them. quite long tidbits, on second glance. the highlight reel, if you will

(1) that time andrea dovizioso made 14 year old jorge lorenzo cry

the two of them already raced each other before the start of their grand prix careers, competing for the first time in 2001 in the cev when dovi was around 15 and jorge around 14. in riveras tobia's biography, here's jorge talking about their first fight:

I led the way at the start and Dovizioso and I escaped. It was our first head-to-head encounter, the first time we raced each other. My dad had heard that Dovi was a really clever rider and he warned me before the race. But just like in 1998 at Jerez, with Olive, I acted like a dummy and pushed for the whole race. I kept looking behind me to see the bastard still there! It was impossible to shake him off, he was watching me the whole race until the last lap. Three comers from the end I could hear his engine getting closer and I saw his shadow to my left, but he didn't come past. I thought to myself "This guy is going to try something in a second!" I decided I had to on a tighter line and close the door. Sure enough, Dovi went wider through that comer and then dived up the inside. I didn't close the door in time and tried to get in his slipstream, desperately hoping I could get him the next corner, but I ran wide and he won. I came back in tears, I didn't even want to go to the podium, I felt so cheated. I'd been on the limit for the whole race and I felt like I deserved the win more than he did.

so that's a nice and positive start! there's something charming about how even fifteen year old dovi was an absolute menace on last laps

also about that race:

'Jorge beat Dovi in Braga but in the previous race at Most, what a tantrum!' recalls Juanito, laughing. 'He didn't even want to go to the podium, he was crying like a baby! I can still see Dani (Antatriain) talking to him, trying to convince him. In the end he went but he didn't want to look at anybody.'

(2) the photo finish

in 2004, they were rivals in 125cc - a year in which dovi claimed the title and jorge was p4 in the standings. in the very first grand prix ever at the lusail circuit (pretty eventful weekend, you have to say), jorge and dovi crossed the line at the exact same moment

(3) dovi's top three favourite career win

dovi and jorge progressed through the categories at the exact same rate, and after their 125cc rivalry they continued fighting in 250cc. they were title rivals in both 2006 and 2007, with jorge's aprilia winning out both times against dovi's underpowered honda. (the general pattern was that dovi clawed back a bunch of points from jorge in the wet - jorge, with perhaps the exception of a few years in the premier class until around 2013, has never been much of a wet weather racers, while it's always been one of dovi's strongest traits.) for dovi's 300th career start in 2019, he was asked what his top three wins were - and one of his picks was from way back when in 2007

I'd recommend the race! which... well, I did in the race rec post - and I can only reiterate that these two kids do not acknowledge each other, not good vibes at all

(4) jorge's thoughts on young dovi from 2008

Jorge has a lot of respect for Andrea Dovizioso and feels that his two 250cc world titles have even more prestige because he had to beat the Italian to win them. 'You wouldn't label Dovizioso as fast, particularly, but he's much faster than he looks. He doesn't set many pole positions but he is always up front in a race, fighting to win. He is very intelligent and you can't trust him an inch on the last lap. He has been faithful to Honda, he has great belief in them. His negative side is that he tends to play the victim too much. He'll say that if his bike had a better engine or if it was a bit faster he would win. He's even said that if he was on the same bike as me he'd give me a hiding. I think he looks for excuses too often sometimes, but as a rider and a person I don't have a bad word to say about him.'

some dovi traits read as very familiar, from how he's a better racer than qualifier to the intelligence to the last lap prowess. as for jorge saying dovi plays victim too much? well

also this:

ER: Don't you think that Dovizioso wanted to be World Champion too in 2006 and 2007? Don't you think he gave everything to achieve it? JL: He will think he gave his maximum but he will be lying to himself because nobody does that. Nobody gets close to their maximum, not even me. He will think that he didn't win because he was riding a Honda. There are very few sportsmen who will say, I deserve what happened to me and there are no excuses. I didn't know how to do any better and I've done things wrong.' That is the only way to be the best, the only way. People who make excuses don't get to the top. I know riders who haven't made it for just that reason.

(5) jorge's thoughts on young dovi from 2018

when they were doing their thing as ducati teammates (bickering), here is one of the things jorge said about dovi:

dovi's been trying to undermine jorge's morale his WHOLE career... even when they were but teenagers... love it when you can really tell someone's been sitting on something for over a decade

(6) "also lorenzo is not my friend"

both of them moved up to motogp in 2008, jorge with factory yamaha and dovi with satellite honda. dovi had a very strong rookie season and finished in p5, only sixteen points behind jorge in p4 (who after a promising first few races had spent a lot of time that season crashing). after that, their fortunes diverged. dovi did not have a particularly happy time in the factory honda team and needed to do some shrewd negotiating to be retained by them for 2011 in that three-man squad, while jorge of course won the championship in 2010

here's a deep cut from 2011, a season where much of the excitement and drama was caused by marco simoncelli alone. jorge had exchanged tense words with sic in estoril, one race before simoncelli was responsible for a crash where dani broke his collarbone. the crash and sic's subsequent penalty meant that the three-way fight between jorge, dovi and valentino became one for the podium, with dovi and valentino eventually grabbing the two remaining spots behind casey. but during the race, jorge had executed a... questionable manoeuvre on dovi, one that did have some similarities to the sic/dani incident. given jorge's strong previous comments on racing standards, unsurprisingly the journalists pounced on this incident in the post-race presser and ask the podium sitters about it. here is the clip:

in this clip, dovi essentially says it was a dangerous move from jorge, but he wasn't sure what jorge's intent had been and he needs to watch the footage again. valentino (who had been the most outspokenly critical of sic of the three of them earlier in the presser) takes the opportunity presented to him to have a bit of a potshot at jorge. he says that dovi doesn't have the best relationship with sic but jorge had done something pretty similar in the race... at which point dovi goes "also lorenzo is not my friend"

which, you know. not exactly a major incident, but I find it very charming dovi felt the need to clarify that, actually, he doesn't like either of them. valentino also adds that by jorge's own standards, surely he too should have gotten a penalty. not exactly a meeting of jorge's biggest fans hm

(7) mapping eight-gate

well I can't leave it out, can I

so in 2017 jorge switches from yamaha to ducati and does not have a great time of it. a lot of weekends, he's just too slow, other times he shoots to the front of a race at the start (typically not great news for the rest of the field in his yamaha days) and then chews up his tyres before gradually dropping like a stone back through the field. at some point that year it became a bit of a running gag - especially when you saw he was the only big name to be picking a soft tyre and just went... buddy we ALL know how this is gonna end....

while this was happening, his teammate dovi was for the first time in his premier class career in championship contention. an extremely close title fight throughout the year with five protagonists until pretty late in the season, it eventually went to a title decider in valencia between dovi and marc. you know, the kind of year where every point counts. the race where marc put a bit of daylight between himself and dovi was phillip island, with marc winning a great dogfight out front while dovi had a bit of a horror show of a weekend. this meant that a lot would have to go right for dovi to have a chance of still winning the title... and sepang was already a match point race for marc

ducati had not won a championship since their 2007 title, courtesy of one casey stoner. after that year, their bike became steadily less competitive every season, reaching a nadir around the 2011-13-ish period. so by the time 2017 rolled around, they wanted this so so badly - even if they wouldn't have expected dovi to lead the charge. dovi had only narrowly beaten out iannone in the 'who's going to be fired for our shiny new lorenzo hire' contest of 2016, and really it was supposed to be jorge who was carrying ducati's dreams on his shoulders. but, never mind, they were throwing everything behind dovi now... no stone left unturned

which brings us, of course, to the subject of team orders. this discourse really took off at the penultimate race of the season at sepang, but was already brewing before that - and in phillip island, satellite ducati rider redding had been told early in the race to let dovi past

here from marc at sepang:

dovi had been in great form all weekend at sepang - and with his wet weather prowess being what it was, really there shouldn't have been any need for team orders at all. but he got a sluggish start, and the race unfolded from there... until eventually jorge was in first, dovi was in second and marc in fourth. in those positions, marc would have clinched the title there

and then, jorge got a message on his dashboard. suggested mapping: mapping 8. pit boards and dashboards and all sorts of boards will feature various codes during races, most of them completely innocuous - but of course they are a healthy source of all sorts of conspiracies. the timing of this one was certainly... notable, and speculation immediately started about how it might be a way of telling jorge that he should swap positions with dovi

jorge didn't end up letting dovi pass - it is questionable whether he really would have done so with what would have been his first ducati win on the line. in the end, he made a mistake that let dovi through so that dovi claimed the win anyway, keeping himself in mathematical contention in valencia. and jorge did say afterwards he was keeping dovi's title hopes in mind, kind of

jorge also said he hadn't gotten any message indicating team orders, and of course nobody at ducati confirmed that mapping eight did have anything to do with team orders

for what it's worth, this is what dovi said about their relationship at this stage:

anyway, onto valencia. this race was pretty boring despite being a title decider, but the jorge/dovi bits were just unequivocally the weekend's most enjoyable aspect and rather nicely spiced up the whole thing. dovi's chances were always slim going in, given he'd have to win the race and marc would have to barely get any points at all... but still, you never know, right? marc could always crash (narrator: he did almost crash). jorge plays coy early in the weekend about the whole 'helping dovi out thing', and basically just started putting in place...? ... very specific conditions...? under which he'd help:

so during the actual race, dovi got stuck behind jorge in p5, with marc ahead of both of them. valencia is traditionally not a fantastic track to overtake at... so even if dovi had been faster, it's not like he'd have an easy time clearing jorge and cracking on. but they were beginning to drift further away from dani in p3 as ducati watched on, increasingly unamused by what was happening - and the tv cameras were of course kind enough to repeatedly show the ducati box looking deeply unamused. again, they went for the good old mapping eight message, which, hey, that could mean anything! they sure did keep showing it to jorge though, almost like he wasn't paying attention to it

eventually, they abandon all subtlety and go for a pit board message that does just straight-up tell jorge to swap positions. jorge kept ignoring the messages, lap after lap, and he never ended up letting dovi past. eventually they both crashed and marc claimed the title with a p3 finish, so it wouldn't have mattered anyway, but... still. the feeling was that this might things rather awkward inside of ducati

publicly, ducati was extremely keen to smooth over the whole controversy, saying they totally weren't mad at jorge blatantly ignoring team orders. jorge had, after all, explained to them (and the media, repeatedly) that he had totally been intending to help dovi by dragging him closer to dani

Giving his take on events, Lorenzo acknowledged that he ignored Ducati’s instruction because he felt Dovizioso’s chances would be boosted by having him directly ahead. “Even looking at this [dashboard] suggestion, I keep pushing until the end, because I knew it was the best thing for me, for Ducati and for Dovi,” said Lorenzo. “I helped him to improve his pace by one or two tenths, to be as close as possible to the first group. My intention was, and it was the case, that we arrive at the first group. If he had the option to win, I would have gone wide and let him pass. But unfortunately it was not like that. Maybe in some corners Dovi was close and I slow down a little bit his pace, but in general terms, having my wheel in front of him made him improve slightly his pace. I helped him stayed closer to the front group. “I knew Dovi was struggling, I knew his pace during all the weekend, and I knew he was making the best pace of the weekend just in the race. It was [because of the] help from my wheel. I’m happy because I was not wrong. If I was wrong and slowing him, I would be very sorry. But it’s not like that, my feeling was true.”

which, you know. is it really that easy to tell how much faster you are than someone who's sitting on your rear tyre? who's to say. dovi did certainly seem rather keen to get past

anyhow, of course there were plenty of fun dramatics post-race:

'our rider ignored team suggestions not team orders' is a great line, fairs. there's plenty more of this from ducati, some excellent spin doctoring - and dovi was extremely magnanimous about what had happened:

the whole thing was pretty undignified from all non-dovi parties, but it was also very funny so who's to say if it was bad or not

(8) runner-up-gate

let's check in on them in 2018, the second and ultimately last year in which they were teammates. remember that 'undermining morale' quote from above? those are from early 2018, after dovi says he wouldn't be surprised to see jorge elsewhere the following season. so, once jorge has complained that dovi had been trying to put him down his entire career, comes this:

so that's something. jorge, dovi and dani have a three-in-one crash in jerez, after which some fingers are pointed but it all remains fairly civil, and a bit later dovi says that jorge's approach doesn't work at ducati:

by the summer break, jorge's results had gotten better, but it was already too late to save the relationship with ducati and they parted ways. anyway, here's dovi and jorge having another go at it:

And while a rough patch for Dovizioso coupled with breakthrough back-to-back wins for Lorenzo in Mugello and Barcelona have now left the pair just three points apart in the standings, Dovizioso refused to back down from his claim when speaking to Spanish sports daily Marca ahead of the upcoming Brno race. “He’s won two races,” Dovizioso said. “Winning two races does not solve the problem of a year and a half. Lorenzo was not signed to win two races. Therefore I do not change my mind.” When the comments were put to Lorenzo, the three-time champion offered an ardent retort, stating that Dovizioso's rhetoric was proof of the claim he'd made back in April. “I'm a bit fed up with this situation, mainly because when I had trouble and he was winning, I was down there applauding,” Lorenzo told Spanish broadcaster Movistar. “What I said in Argentina - and the comments caused a big surprise - you can see that I was right. “He tried to undermine me, or downplay what I achieve or just attack me. As you can see, I wasn't lying. He's still doing it and now he says my method is not good, according to him.” Lorenzo intimated that Dovizioso was in no position to criticise him, as the Italian could do no better than runner-up to Marc Marquez in a 'perfect' 2017 season. He said: “I think my method has not worked too bad in my career. I've won three MotoGP titles and have 46 wins.” “In my second year in Ducati I'm usually faster than him, but maybe I should look at his method closer if in his best season, with everything going perfectly, he was second. Otherwise he's fourth or seventh usually. I'd tell him to leave me to go my way and to focus on his own and everything will be better, because when you have an angry Lorenzo it's usually worse for you.” 

fair to say that by this point the pretence at civility has mostly been dropped. I'm rather fond of the "lorenzo was not signed to win two races" line, though "when you have an angry lorenzo it's usually worse for you" is also really strong stuff. dovi tries to restore a little bit of peace:

Responding in turn to Lorenzo's tirade, Dovizioso sought to play down the conflict. “Jorge has his ideas and I think they are based on particular things. I don't think like him, but it's not a problem,” he told Movistar. “Everybody creates their own ideas based on what they see and how they live. “I don't think he has everything clear in his head about what's happened, but we continue the relationship that we started last year with respect, there's no particular problem. If he thinks this way, that's his problem."

so basically the classic 'idk what he's on about but it's not my problem' approach to attempting to defuse feuds

(9) twitter-gate

there's a few more on-track battles where it's nicely obvious how badly they want to beat each other, with jorge beating marc just ahead of dovi in austria and then dovi beating jorge in brno. jorge's season is increasingly derailed by injuries, which sets the stage for their next big spat:

The row was sparked by Dovizioso's comments to Sky Italia after qualifying at Sepang on Saturday, as he was asked what he thought of Lorenzo having to pull out of the Malaysian GP weekend with injury. "I don't know the details, I don't want to get into this, it's a bit of a strange situation," said Dovizioso."It happens often in Ducati or to certain riders, but I don't understand the details and I don't want to get into it and give my opinion." When it was put to him he was offering 'cryptic words', he added: "I leave things there, it's not my problem."

pretty vague, yeah. but anyway, I'm sure jorge had a proportionate response to this

Dovizioso's comments prompted a series of irate posts from Lorenzo on Twitter, with his first reaction being "Thank you very much @AndreaDovizioso! You are a real gentleman!". In his next post, he went on to call Dovizioso "an exemplary teammate", adding: "You applaud him under the podium when he wins and then... (That's right, he does not give his opinion, it's not his problem)." After that, Lorenzo labelled Dovizioso "envious" and described him as "a world champion... in 125cc."

the podium thing really bothered him, don't you think. their ducati in-fighting follows that general pattern where dovi says something... a little shady, a little ambiguous, where his intentions aren't entirely obvious... at which point jorge goes all in at fighting back and has a go at dovi - often not as much for what dovi is actually saying, but what jorge thinks dovi is implying. which is based on his understanding of dovi, the image of dovi he's built up in his head over the years, so that he is... predisposed to think ill of the intentions of the 'intelligent' dovi who always knows exactly what he's saying

again, dovi tried to downplay the argument, while simultaneously not exhibiting much patience for jorge's stance:

After the Malaysian GP, Dovizioso was asked about Lorenzo's responses to his comments, and the Italian accused his teammate of reading too much into headlines. He said: “Why should I talk to Lorenzo? not the only rider jorge has beefed with post-retirement, but compare and contrast with how he really hasn't been doing any of that with some of his biggest career rivals. valentino, marc, dani - sure, he still talks about the controversies he's had with them pretty regularly (to put it lightly), and he's hardly free of complaints... but mostly it's a distinctly nostalgic tone he's adopting with these guys. admittedly, it helps that none of those three have gone out of their way to say anything particularly inflammatory about jorge. still, the absolute lack of any sort of rapprochement with dovi of all people is pretty funny
