The Old Forest, Outer Hobbiton, The Shire – T.A. 25th October 2939 of the Third Age (1339 in Shire-reckoning)
I had strayed from the path a while back, grass replacing the smooth stones that marked the paths circling Hobbiton. Only the dying light of my small lantern accompanied me, I foolishly realised, as I had not planned ahead for this spur-of-the-moment outing – thinking I could rely on the shine of the moon, but I forgot that it was a new phase, so all that was ahead of me was the gaping darkness, as it tempted me deeper into the towering trees of the Old Forest.
By now, any glow from the lights left outside each hobbit hole had vanished behind the silhouettes of thick trunks and bushes that surrounded me. The only luck I had to return before Bilbo’s curfew was if I stumbled upon a road that led me back, and, I managed to guess the correct direction that wouldn’t lead me into the wilderness. Just because I had a map of Middle Earth on my favourite mug back home, didn’t mean I had memorised it. Which, at this point, was my biggest downfall.
I inhaled deeply through my nose, taking in the sharp, fresh air that came with a clear late evening, like a cold glass of water, that was blissful on your throat at 2am. Approaching one of the taller trees, I plopped myself down against its trunk and stretched my legs out. Many thoughts passed over my mind, memories from Earth, things I owned that would never be found here, but what stuck, was thoughts of my family; Where they were; if time continued on, and, if the two of us reported missing. How they would cope with the news. That was the one thing I dreaded – considering how sensitive my family was. I wondered about Bella, my dog. Knowing her singular braincell, it’ll take her a few years to realise I’m gone. I smiled at the thought of my dogs face as she pounced around the fields in search of rabbits, her thin ginger tail whipping back and forth. Her warm brown eyes staring intently at me from in between the long grass, the iris’ flickering with green.
Wait – green?
Bella’s eyes weren’t green.
I blinked rapidly, returning my senses to my surroundings. Pressing the bases of my palms against my eyelids, I blinked them open, and realised that the green eyes weren’t leaving – they were in fact, in front of me.
I grabbed my lantern and held it up, stretching my arm out to allow the dying flame illuminate the bushes that sat a few yards ahead of my feet. With baited breath I stared arduously at the small gap of leaves, until a flash of green flickered, and the pair of green eyes returned, this time with a physical body.
Placing one paw in front of the other, the shadow silently crept out from beneath the darkness of the leaves, almost like a hunter stalking its prey. Light shimmered like gold on ebony fur, and with a twitch of its ear, a black cat emerged, traipsing into the light.
A soft gasp left my lips, watching it stop just before where my feet lay, and I felt a smile warm my face. Any sorrowful thought that plagued my mind earlier was now whisked away at the sight of the small feline.
“Hello,” I whispered, as I gently placed the lantern down, watching as the cat’s emerald eyes flickered over me, following my every move. “Where did you come from?”
As slowly as before, I lowered my hand to the ground, and carefully moved it towards the creature, stopping just past my toes. To my delight, the cat took another cautious step forwards, it’s black nose lifting to sniff the air, before lowering it to my curled fingers. My pinkie twitched slightly, and the cat took a step back, returning to sit where it had revealed itself by the bush, the end of its tail flicking slightly from where it rested on the grass.
“No touching? That’s ok.” I murmured, taking my hand back and placing it on my lap. Minutes passed by, where the two of us simply observed each other, getting used to the other’s presence whilst waiting for the other to move.
My head raised suddenly, Bilbo’s stern face appearing at the forefront of my mind, and I remembered my curfew. Getting to my feet as calmly as I could to not startle the creature in front of me, I brushed off the fallen leaves that had caught themselves on my shift and coat, and picked up my lantern.
I had only taken a couple steps, when a ‘meow’ sounded from behind me. Puzzled I turned around to see the cat was now by my feet, it’s eyes wide as it approached me, almost playful.
“Huh?” Was all I said.
It meowed again, white teeth flashing as it opened its mouth to make the sounds.
“I’m sorry but I have to go.” I replied gently. “Or Bilbo will have my head.”
I went to walk away once again, but jumped with a start as I looked down to find it had appeared in front of me, but this time with something familiar in its mouth. Squinting, I gasped in outrage when I realised what it was.
“Hey!” I exclaimed, shoving my hand into the inner pocket of my coat, only to find it open and missing the one thing that was supposed to be inside it. Though I knew where it had gone – and it was currently trotting away with its tail held high.
Turning on my heel, I strode after the cat, keeping the lantern as high as I could to not lose the dark-furred feline to the darkness it could oh-so easily blend into. Eventually I broke into a run, frustrated at the sight of the cat as it only got further away.
“Come on!” I cried with heaving breaths – bed rest had not been courteous to my stamina levels. “That’s important to me! You can’t just take it!”
Said thing was a braided leather bracelet, cream in colour, with a red button sewn on as a clasp. It was a handmade gift from my grandad, one I had kept close to me and cherished since his passing three years ago. And I certainly wasn’t going to part with it any time soon.
My walking boots thumped heavily against the ground. Whilst working perfectly well on the wild terrain, they were certainly not suited for running, as my feet began to feel like they have become big hooves – too heavy and stiff for these kinds of escapades. Shoving away a low hanging branch, I then leaped over a twisted root, only to cry out as my still-healing ankle gave way, and I hit the ground with a thud.
With a groan, I pushed myself onto my elbows before twisting over to sit up. The cat came back into my mind, and I whipped my head around, ignoring the throbbing aches from the points of impact my body graciously had with the ground.
The glass of my lantern was smashed on the ground in front of me, and in the final flickers of the flame, my eyes landed on a large rabbit hole in the middle of a hollowed tree trunk, and as I climbed to my feet, I caught a flash of green from in the shadows. Marching over, I kneeled down, braced my hands on either side of the rotting bark, and peered into the darkness.
It was an exceptionally large tunnel, big enough for me to fit into. Roots of all sizes twisted and hung from the walls and roof of soil. The odd beetle appeared, before dashing away again, and as the flame behind me finally died, I went to give up on the rescue.
With a snap, a twig broke behind me, and I spun around, only to let out a scream as the rotten bark crumbled in my hands as it gave way. Feeling a sharp knock against my head, I watched the world go black, feeling myself tumble into the darkness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“C’mon c’mon c’mon.” I whimpered, working my trembling hands as best as I could to strike the match against the rough side of the cardboard box. It really helped sometimes when I forgot to empty all my pockets, feeling extremely lucky that matches were one of the things found. What didn’t help was the uncontrollable tears that began to pool in my eyes – and also that fact that I was stuck in a narrow tunnel in the complete pitch black.
With a crackle and a hiss, the small flame burst to life in between my fingers, and I craned my head the best I could to look down either side of the tunnel, hindered by the fact that it was so narrow, my back was arched forwards and my neck was constantly bent over at the low ceiling. The tightening in my chest also meant the claustrophobia was kicking in big time.
Trying my best to look down both sides as much as I could through the blur of my tears, I noticed that one end trailed upwards, and decided that was my best option to fining the way out. Feeling the heat of the flame grow, I quickly blew the match out, and summoning all the energy I had left, I flopped onto my front, and began to commando crawl up through the darkness.
Digging my elbows and knees into the soil, I clambered onwards for what felt like a quarter of an hour, whilst also lighting the odd match, checking that there wasn’t any other tunnels that I would accidentally take. It was odd that I was so far down, and I wondered whether or not I landed down there naturally.
Soon, to my luck, the fresh air from earlier began to replace the damp and stagnant, the tunnel widening enough for me to stand on my knees, and I felt relief wash through me knowing I was almost out. Lighting a match, I raised it up, only to see a large hole above me just a metre ahead, with a familiar wall of bark surrounding it. Shuffling myself closer whilst trying to keep the match alight, I went to reach to the edge of the hole, when something caught my eye.
Adding on to the very odd things that had happened to me on this night, I stared bewildered at my bracelet hanging right in front of me, hooked onto an even odder-looking piece of wood. My hand quickly shot out, grabbing it and stuffing it to the bottom of my deepest pocket, making sure it was zipped up securely, safe and tight.
Lighting another match, I looked back, holding the small flame up as I eyed the piece of wood curiously. It didn’t look quite like a root – the end was too thick and blunt, and was covered in parts that were unnaturally smooth, a darkened colour as if someone had crawled down here and decided to carve and polish random parts of tree roots, leaving them to stick out about several inches from the soil. Reaching out, I poked and prodded at it with my fingernail, before slowly wrapping my hand around it. A pull.
But I didn’t pull it.
Before I knew it, my hand was jerked forward, sucked into the wall as if I had stuck my hand into the flesh of a giant slimy slug, and I quickly began to panic, my eyes widening as I watched soil wrap around my wrist like short, stubby tentacles to pull it in further. The squelching and crumbling of wet dirt and rock contorting around my limb echoed through the tunnel as I realised that I couldn’t let go of the stick, so trying my best to think rationally through the crushing fear of becoming part of the ground, I leant onto my back and lifted my legs up, bracing my feet against the wall. With all my might, I gritted my teeth together as I grasped my rapidly disappearing arm, and pulled.
I let out a loud grunting breath as I felt it give way a little, but quickly repositioned as I prepared to pull again. But before I could, a deep sound resonated in my ears, drowning out the noises of moving dirt, and every hair on my body stood on end, terror pinging through every vertebrae along my spine, the one sound I had wished to never hear again pounding against my ear drums.
Feeling the colour drain from my face, I slowly turned my head to my right, until my eyes landed on an oh-so familiar shape down in the tunnel.
It was blue.
Slitted eyes pierced into my own as I fixated on the terrifying creature from my dream, and a tsunami of panic crashed over me, for this time I wasn’t in a dream – and this was very much real.
With a cry, I returned to my arm, bracing my legs and pulling with all my might. My eyes darted back down the tunnel, and the creature lurched, it’s claws reaching out to gouge the dirt as it tried to pull its large body towards me. If they could gouge dirt, they could certainly gouge me. Sobs racked through my throat as I frantically tugged at my arm, feeling my fingernails break skin as I clawed uncontrollably at my wrist, that was slowly but surely revealing itself.
Letting out a scream with one final pull, my hand shot out, hitting me in the nose. Through the uncontrollable watering of my eyes, I watched as the soil closed itself back up, spiralling inwards like an alien mouth until it became part of the tunnel wall once again. A roar much closer than before pierced my ears, and I darted for the hole above me.
Hands clawed and gripped at grass as I clumped bundles of it up, pulling my torso up and over the edge whilst my feet scrambled and slipped against roots and waterlogged soil.
I managed to hook one knee over the edge, and went to drag the other up, when something pulled against it. Blood pumped through my ears as I looked down, only to find that the bandage around my ankle had snagged against a root. I pulled my foot up again and again, only to find that the know holding it together refused to budge.
“Curse Erard and his perfect bandaging!” I cried.
Remembering what I had put in my coat pocket earlier, I stuck my hand in to pull out my sewing scissors, and quickly got to work, hacking away at the cream material.
It was just in time, because as soon as my foot landed on the grass, a glowing blue set of claws shot out. I screamed in terror, then howled in pain as one of the hooked appendages nicked my shin, and I clambered to my feet, sprinting full power into the darkness.
Tears ran down and across my cheeks, and hair whipped across my face and neck as I raced between the dark silhouettes of trees and stumbled over unseen roots, hoping to whatever deity was out there that I was going the right way. Adrenaline had replaced any feeling as I tried to put as much distance between myself and that godforsaken hole.
I decided to only take a moment, hands gripping my knees as I arched over to catch what breath I’d lost, air rattling through my lungs as I tried my best to stop my breaths from shuddering and shaking. My back pressed against a trunk as I tried to shrink my shoulders together, hiding myself as best as I could whilst I recovered. Though an odd feeling in one of my hands had my eyes blinking open, and in the darkness, I could just make out the outline of a thin object in my hand. Running my fingers up and down the surface, I recognised it: I had not let go of the oddly shaped stick, the one that caused my hand to be sucked into a wall by some unseen force. Doing my best in the pitch black, I tried to make out the shapes and features on the stick of wood – surprisingly straight, and thinned out slightly at the top end, and I wondered if someone had dropped their toy wand down a rabbit hole.
Leaves rustled nearby, and I quickly spun around. Though I had not watched my surroundings, and my arm collided with the trunk, knocking the stick sharply against the bark.
A light.
A spark.
Then a bang.
I let out a scream, my arm coming up to shelter my face against the splinters of wood that flew past me. Lowering it, my eyes widened like saucers as I gawked at the sight in front of me.
The tree that stood to the right of mine was now smoking, the edges of the gaping hole that pierced all the way through the trunk glowing an orange, whilst embers floated, before slowly lowering to the ground.
My hands flew up unconsciously in surrender, when I looked to my right hand, looking accusingly at the perpetrator. Just barely, I managed to spot the tip as a light faded until it returned to looking like any other smoothed out stick off a tree.
Though I guess it wasn’t just a stick.
Thundering footsteps vibrated heavily through the ground, and up my legs. Daring to look around the tree, my eyes landed on the blue outline of the creature as it spread its wings, using them to help it skid to a stop, mud spraying everywhere (which was odd, considering I could still see through it).
I held my breath, begging for it to move on. It raised its horned head, taking deep breaths as it searched for scents in the air – most likely mine – and I prayed that the light wind blowed in my favour.
A creak, then a groan, then more creaks, sounded from beside me. Both me and the creature slowly turned our heads, watching as the tree with the hole began to splinter at the sides of the hole, bits of wood springing out as the upper half pressed its weight down. With a loud, creaking BANG, the sides gave way, and the upper half slammed down onto its lower half, before letting out a long, resounding groan as it fell to the side, and my body shrunk in on itself, cringing at every loud noise that drew the creatures attention to my hiding spot. Hitting the ground with a final mighty crash, branches and leaves snapped off whilst birds from all around scattered at the sudden noise.
Finally, I let my body relax, shaking off the tension as the foliage settled once again, and I peeked around my tree once again, only to find that the creature was looking directly at me.
Taking cautious steps, I slowly began to back away, only for the creature to lower its head,  and it began steadily stalking towards me, just like it had done on our first meeting.
Feeling the fear and panic pierce through me once again, I racked my brain for a way out. I glanced at the stick in my hand. Raising my arm, I hesitantly pointed it at the creature. Its eyes landed on what I was pointing, at it let out a roar, and broke into a run. I sped up my backwards walking, keeping my arm raised, and without thinking, I brought it back, and gave it a powerful flick.
Just like before, a spark shot out the end, flooding the forest with light for a moment, crossing the distance in less than a second before landing a direct hit on the beasts head.
The blast sent it flying backwards, and it crashed into the bushes behind it, vanishing amongst the leaves after leaving an outline of its landing. I punch the air, letting out an uncontrollable shout of triumph. Though that was short lived, as the beast let out another roar, more aggressive than the last. Oh, I had pissed it off big time.
Stumbling over my own feet, I darted back the way I had come, speeding as fast as my legs would allow, praying that the lights of Hobbiton would appear again soon.
To my luck, as if someone was watching over me, I finally felt the stone path, that I had foolishly abandoned earlier, back under the soles of my boots, and looking up, I smiled, relieved, at the sight of a street-lantern just metres ahead. I could finally see properly. I continued down the path at the same running speed, not letting any false sense of security fall over me. The banks at either side of the path grew higher and higher as the stones travelled downwards towards the first set of houses, until one fell away to reveal the town. Behind me, my ears picked up the sounds of footsteps again, and I whipped around, raising the stick once more to point it at the creature, this time aiming for between the eyes.
It skidded to a halt at the edge of the forest, kicking up another spray of dirt as it did. It stood there, nostrils flaring, with what looked like smoke emitting from them and from between the gaps of its mouth. Claws dug into the ground as it stood on the bank that towered above me, its eyes boring into mine before flicking down to what was in my hand.
A growl erupted from its throat, one that you would feel in the ground rather than the air, it was that deep. It snapped its jaws, teeth flashing and saliva dripping and disappearing into thin air. To my surprise, with a flick of its spiked tail, it tucked in its wings and turned around, vanishing into the forest.
A breath escaped me, and I relaxed every tensed muscle, whilst patting my chest to calm my quivering heart. I reached up and rubbed my neck, moving my head around in a full circle to feel those satisfying pops in my spine. I also shook my arms and legs out, ridding what I could of my remaining adrenaline.
Doing a quick scan of the area, I figured everyone was still in bed, despite the loud screams and shouts I had made while deep in the forest. I made a reminder to never get myself back into any sort of danger whilst staying with hobbits, because you could guarantee that they would snore through the whole ordeal unless you smashed their window in screaming bloody murder.
After confirming that nobody was watching me, I began the trek up to Bilbo’s house. Despite the fact that no one heard me in the woods earlier, it didn’t mean that I didn’t want to be found wandering around after hours, so I decided to take the long but hidden route around the outskirts of the town.
‘At least it’s scenic.’ I thought to myself, but remembered immediately afterwards that I wouldn’t be able to see most of it considering the sun was non-existent right now, and the nearest lanterns were at least a couple metres away from the path.
Jogging over one of the stone bridges, I walked along the path until I reached the banks of one of Hobbiton’s lakes. Across it, I could make out the lights from Bilbo’s kitchen windows up the hill, and sped up. Walking past a cluster of bushes, I looked over them at the small lake beside me, only to stop in my tracks.
On the grassy bank on the other side of the lake, Kay stood in only her shift and socks, deathly still. Her head was tilted down slightly, strands of wavy copper hair hanging down and concealing her face slightly as she stared into the watery depths.
I stared apprehensive – she had never done anything like this before. Unless she had a secret hobby that included staring at water (when she knows she can’t swim yet), then there definitely was something wrong. Silently lowering into a crouch, I hid myself behind the bushes, and crawled on my hands until I was able to peek around the leaves.
She still hadn’t moved from her standing position, though after a moment passed, her leg moved out, and she took a single step forward, and leaned over slightly.
Yeah, there was definitely something wrong.
I went to stand up, planning on marching over there and dragging her away for an explanation, when I stumbled slightly. My hand shot out to grab at a branch of a bush, only for it to let out a crack that resounded through the silence of the night.
Kay’s head snapped up, and I immediately stilled, staring in horror.
From where I was, I could see that her eyes had turned completely white, reflecting in the yellow glow of the street-lantern nearby, and was that blue on her cheeks?? No, no blue anymore. I remained as still as I could – I didn’t trust white eyed Kay – and remained in the shadows until she slowly turned back towards the water.
A minute passed, where she only stood, then she took another step forward, her toes at the edge of the grassy bank that held her up about half a metre higher above the water level. She leaned further. And further. I was preparing to call out, when she fell, sending a wave to crash over the still surface of the water, and I rushed to my feet.
Nuh uh, there was no way I’m having some water-obsessed demon possess my only earth friend to jump in lakes!!
(Well, more like belly flopped.)
Rounding the edge to where she had stood, chucking the stick in my hand on the ground, and I dived in, getting flashbacks to pulling her out of that pond when we first fell here. In the black depths, I stuck my arms out, hoping to catch onto her at some point.
A turquoise glow appeared from near my feet, and brushing the blurred outlines of pondweed aside, I made out the fuzzy silhouette of Kay as she floated unmoving over the glow, though one of her arms was outstretched, reaching towards it. I then reached out and grasped her shoulder, only for her to begin thrashing in my grip. Despite her flailing, I managed to keep my hands on her, and started dragging her to the surface.
Breaking the surface, I gasped for air, and brought Kay with me, only for her to worsen. This time, she replaced thrashing for screeching, her hands shooting out to claw at where mine were on her biceps. At one point she leaned over to bite me, and I noticed something ghastly.
Her teeth had become pointed and fang-like, snapping menacingly just like the creature had done earlier as it chased me through the woods.
Deciding that enough was enough, I swam towards the shore. More like flopped around, considering I had a feral, possessed Kay in my grip trying to gnaw my arm into a stub.
Reaching a part of the bank that slowly raised into short pebble beach, instead of the miniature grassy cliff, I managed to find my footing, and quickly let go of Kay to shrug off my heavy, now waterlogged coat and chuck it onto the shore. Turning back, I stood and watched as Kay remained on her front in the water, her hands gripping onto the stone as she lifted her head up to glare at me with her white eyes. I took a small step forward, and she bared her teeth, emitting a cat-like hiss. I put my hands on my hips.
“Alright, mermaid time is over.” I deadpanned.
She hissed again, and pushed back against the rocks, trying to re-submerge herself. Acting quick, I kicked at the water, emitting a wave that hit her directly in the face. Whilst she flailed distracted at the attack, I lunged forward and grabbed her under the armpits. She shrieked, arms twisting and flapping about to try and claw at my arms again. Though she had cut her nails recently, so all that she left were shallow red and white lines along my forearms. Dragging her onto the stones, I pinned her down by the shoulders and tried speaking over her hissing and screaming.
“C’mon, you can’t just go –” *HISSS*  “ –Stop it. I said you can’t just go around jumping into water whenever you feel like it and expect me to drag you out each time!”
A hand came out and slapped against the side of my head, and I sucked in a breath, gritting my teeth. Shutting my eyes for a second, I let out the breath and opened them again to meet Kay’s white ones, and came to my last option.
“You asked for it.” I warned, raising my eyebrows at her accusingly.
And slapped her across the face.
Letting go, I watched as she rolled over, groaning, and curled in on herself, then stilled. A moment passed, and her head shot up, whipping around with a frown on her face, along with a red mark shining prominently on her left cheek. What was relieving though, was the fact that her eyes had returned to her usual grey. Raising her hand to her cheek, she glared at me.
“The fuck was that for??” She whinged. “That hurt.”
“That hurt?? Then what the hell do you call this??” I raised my forearms up, accidentally flicking water everywhere, to show off the scratches and bitemarks along the skin. She gawked at them with wide eyes, but opened her mouth, outraged.
“I didn’t do that!!” She cried.
“Yes you did! For some reason you thought tonight would be a good time to play mermaids, and have been kicking and screaming ever since, all the while I’ve been trying to drag you out to stop you from drowning yourself!”
“Drag me out – ?” Looking to the side of me, her mouth hung open as she spotted the lake behind me, then down at her clothes, reaching to pull at the drenched shift that was clinging to her skin. “I was – I was in the forest!”
“The forest? What were you doing there?!” I questioned.
“I was there to ask you the same thing!” She exclaimed. “I followed you! To make sure you weren’t doing anything stupid after Bilbo had said you went for a walk. I ended up losing you for a bit when you ran after something, and when I found you looking into that giant rabbit hole, I ended up snapping that twig that scared you into falling in.” She frowned. “Then I think I blacked out, and woke up here – to you slapping the shit out of me, might I mention!” She accused, shoving a soggy finger in my direction.
My hands flew up in protest. “Yeah, cause you were acting possessed! I was walking back to Bilbo’s when I saw you standing on the bank just staring into the water like that girl from The Ring, then you fell in, and when I tried to get you out, you eyes were white and your teeth had magically become sharp for some reason!” I replied, gesturing to the shallow puncture marks in my arms. “All you had to do was grow a fish tail and I would’ve officially thought I was going mad!”
Kay stared incredulously, her mouth hanging open wide enough to catch an entire hoard of flies as she remained in a shocked silence.
“White eyes.” I nodded. “Sharp. teeth.” I nodded again.
“Would I lie about something as crazy as that?” I asked.
Slowly, she shook her head.
“So I went all demon on you?” She questioned, a guilty look on her face.
I thought for a moment. “More like feral mermaid.”
She raised her eyebrows, intrigued by that version.
“But you had no control over yourself.” I stated, and she went back to frowning, deflated at the revelation.
We both sat there, drenched hair clinging to our faces and clothes heavy and dripping with lake water. I ended up pulling a few pieces of pondweed off from where they had caught on my shoulders and legs. Flicking away a piece on my ankle, a tiny nudge of movement caught my eye, and I let out a gasp at the sight of a stick almost identical to the one I had found, held loosely in Kay’s hand. I pointed at it.
“Where did you get that?” I questioned.
She eyed me, confused, then her eyes switched to where I was pointing. Frowning deeper, she quickly brought it up to her face, examining it with wide eyes, before bringing it away and gingerly dropping it down between us.
“I have never seen this before in my life.”
We both stared at the stick as it laid on the pebble shore. Kay got startled as I then scrambled to my feet, kicking stones everywhere, and she watched as I ran along the shoreline, before skidding to a stop to grab something off the ground, and sprinting back. Flopping back onto my spot, I placed my stick next to hers, watching the realisation dawn on Kay’s face as she stared at them.
“I found mine,” I jabbed a finger at it, whilst catching my breath, “Down that rabbit hole I fell down.” Kay’s head shot up to look at me in shock. “It was sticking out of the soil, and when I tried to pull it out, the wall tried sucking me into it, a bit like how you were possessed and almost drowned when getting yours.”
Kay’s eyes glazed over as she stared, her mind most likely travelling a million miles a second as she tried to comprehend the newly revealed information.
“And mine did something.” I added slowly. “I don’t know how, but I ended up blowing a tree to smithereens with it.”
Her eyes refocused, and bore directly into mine.
“Like a wand.” She muttered.
I nodded. “Like magic.”
“There you are!”
We both screamed, jumping high in the air. I toppled over, though quickly regained myself to look up and see a very disgruntled Bilbo standing on the grass at the edge of the beach. He tapped his foot in place, his hands on his hips while a lantern sat at his feet.
“Jesus Bilbo! Where on Earth did you come from?!” I cried, clasping my chest as I tried to steady my breathing. Poor Kay looked as if she was about to cry from fright.
“I came looking for you two!” He pointed at me. “Your curfew ended two hours ago, and you!” He pointed at Kay. “You were supposed to be in bed! Imagine my panic when I found out you weren’t! And look where I find you, playing wizards in the freezing water!” He gestured to the sticks between us.
We both hung our heads, unsure on what to tell him. He looked at the two of us, and let out a long sigh, picking up his lantern.
“Right, come now. You must change out of those shifts and dry them before Mrs Greenfoot has you both by the ear.”
We stood up, both discreetly picking up the sticks and slipping them up our sleeves. Walking up to Bilbo, I grabbed my coat.
“Hurry now, can’t have you both developing an illness now.” He fussed.
“Yes mother.” I jabbed playfully as I passed him, listening amused at the sputtering match that went on behind me, before the hobbit grumbled under his breath, and ushered us along back up the path.
Returning Home Chapter 4- Thorin Oakenshield x OC
Tumblr media
Thorin Oakenshield x Bellarose Baggins
Description: After stopping to rest one night the Company has an unfortunate meeting with mountain trolls.
Word Count: 2.6k
Later that night Bombur finally finished dinner, which ended up being soup. Bofur was the one to serve it. He ladeled some into a bowl then held it out for Bellarose.
“Ladies first,” he said with a smile, which made the girl giggle.
“Well, thank you. What a gentleman,” she responded teasingly. The Dwarf merely laughed and continued to hand out bowls of soup.
“He’s been a long time,” Bilbo mentioned as he stood beside Bofur.
“Who?”
“Gandalf.”
“He’s a wizard! He does as he chooses,” Bofur brushed off before handing the Hobbit two bowls. “Here, do us a favor: take this to the lads.” Bilbo didn’t look happy, but he did as Bofur said and walked off. After Bellarose finished eating she leaned back in her seat with a small sigh, taking a moment to do a headcount. She sat up upon realizing that her brother hadn’t returned from taking dinner to Fili and Kili.
“Has anyone seen Bilbo recently?” She eventually spoke up, catching a few others’ attention. Balin shrugged as he took another bite of his food.
“Probably keeping the Princes company.”
“No doubt they’ve roped him into something,” Nori joked from beside her, earning a nod from the others. Bellarose considered their words, but something still felt off. After a moment of internal debate, she finally stood and set her bowl aside.
“I’m going to check on them,” she informed them simply before making her way to where the ponies were. She paused upon reaching the horses. There were some missing, and so were Kili, Fili and Bilbo. After inspecting the scene, she realized that some of the surrounding trees had been uprooted. Most likely by something far bigger than anyone in the Company.
Then, she heard voices. They were very faint, but she was able to recognize one of them as Kili. As she got closer to them, she saw what seemed to be a large campfire. Fili, Kili and Bilbo were standing just out of view of whoever sat by the fire.
“Mountain trolls are slow and stupid, and you’re so small,” Kili muttered just loud enough for the four of them to hear. Though, it was most likely that the boys hadn’t been made aware of the girl’s presence because they didn’t face her. Bilbo’s head snapped towards the younger Dwarf, and Bellarose could see that his eyes were wide in bewilderment.
“Me?” He questioned, sounding rather panicked as he shook his head vigorously. “No, no, no.”
“It’s perfectly safe!” Kili reassured him. Bellarose decided it was time to make her presence known as her curiosity got the better of her, and she moved closer to them.
“What is going on here?” She questioned, which made all three of them jump out of their own skins and whip around to face her. Rather than say anything, the girl simply crossed her arms and raised a curious eyebrow at them.
“Bella,” Bilbo greeted, maybe a little too loud. “It’s, uh...well you see-”
“Mountain trolls took Myrtle and Misty and it looks like they plan on eating them,” Kili explained without a second thought, making Bilbo glare at him.
“We’re trying to figure out how to get them without the trolls noticing before our Uncle finds out,” Fili concluded, disregarding the still glaring Hobbit. The girl blinked at them, a blank look on her face, before stepping closer to get a good look at the trolls.
“Yeah, I think a Hobbit could get past them easier.” Bilbo looked like he was ready to pass out from exasperation at her words.
“Why don’t you do it then?” He asked, then paused. “Actually no, you’re not doing this.”
“Oh, come on Bilbo,” the girl rolled her eyes. “You said it yourself, two burglars are better than one. We can do it together.”
“Brilliant idea, Bellarose,” Kili nodded with a smile.
“Thank you Kili.”
“I don’t know you guys,” Bilbo trailed off anxiously, though he was now worried for his sister’s safety over his own. “Is it safe?”
“Of course it is!” The younger Durin responded.
“We’ll be right behind you,” Fili added. “If you run into trouble, hoot twice like a barn owl, once like a brown owl.” The Hobbit repeated his words then hesitated, but he couldn’t say anything before Bellarose spoke up.
“We’ll be fine Bilbo,” she muttered, resting a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Just don’t hesitate like you’re doing right now and we’ll be good to go. Ready?”
“Well-” Bilbo was cut off by the girl sneaking over to the ponies. She arrived at the small pen in which the ponies were being held in and attempted to untie the ropes. It was in vain though. The ropes were too large and too knotted for a Hobbit to untie. She nearly jumped in surprise when the trolls began talking.
The trolls’ conversation was rather boring to listen to. Two of them, William and Tom as Bellarose learned, were complaining about the third troll, Bert’s cooking. Well, more accurately about how they’ve only eaten mutton for an undisclosed amount of time. William sneezed loudly before pulling out a handkerchief. It was at that moment that she noticed a long knife hanging from the troll’s pants. That was likely their best shot at getting the ponies out.
She glanced behind her to see Bilbo following her. She then pointed out the knife to her brother, too afraid that speaking would attract attention to them. Bilbo followed her finger, then his eyes widened when he saw the knife. It looked like he wanted to groan in exasperation but it seemed his train of thought was similar to her because he stayed silent. He nodded once at her then began to creep towards William from behind while Bellarose watched.
“Ooh. That is perfectly balanced, that is. Wrap your loganbie around that, mate,” he said, shoving something into William’s mouth. “Huh! Good, ain’t it? That’s why I’m the cook.”
“Me guts are grumbling,” Tom grumbled. “I’ve got to snaffle something. Flesh. I need flesh!” Bellarose looked at the horses beside her when they began to grow restless, then William suddenly jumped up holding something in his hand. Or rather, someone.
“Aah! Blimey! Bert! Bert, look what’s coming out of me hooter! It’s got arms and legs and everything!” He exclaimed, holding out his hand. It was Bilbo!
“What are you then?” Bert questioned curiously, looking at Bilbo.
“I-I’m a burglar...uh, Hobbit!” He responded nervously.
“A burglar-hobbit?” Tom repeated, bringing the hobbit closer to him.
“Can we cook him?” William questioned.
“We can try!” The troll responded happily, only for Bert to shake his head.
“He wouldn’t make more than a mouthful, not when he’s skinned and boned!”
“Perhaps there are more burglar-hobbits ‘round these parts, maybe there’ll be enough for a pie,” William said optimistically, only for Bilbo to slip out of William’s hand.
“Grab him!” Both Tom and William had a bit of a hard time grabbing him, but the latter was ultimately successful.
“Gotcha!” He exclaimed triumphantly. “Are there any more of you little fellas hiding where you shouldn’t?” Bilbo shook his head quickly.
“No!”
“He’s lying!” Tom yelled.
“I’m not,” the Hobbit insisted. Bellarose looked around desperately, trying to figure out how to help her brother, but it ended up being in vain.
“Look! It’s another burglar-hobbit!” Exclaimed Tom as he pointed directly at her. She only had time to gasp before she was suddenly picked up by Bert, but didn’t have the strength to fight against his grip.
“No she isn’t,” Bilbo responded quickly. He was still attempting to wriggle out of William’s hand when Kili rushed in and slashed one of the troll’s legs, demanding that Bilbo and Bellarose be let go. The troll simply tossed the older Baggins to Kili, who caught him but they ended up falling to the ground together.
The rest of the Company suddenly charged out of the bushes yelling and brandishing their weapons. They began fighting the trolls, hacking, slashing, and hammering their legs. In his shock, Bert ended up dropping Bellarose. She was quick to roll out of the way as Bifur, Dwalin and Nori attacked Bert.
As the Dwarves continued to fight, Bellarose noticed William’s knife on the ground and quickly grabbed it. At the very least she could save the ponies. She ran over to the pen and cut the ropes, allowing the ponies to run away. Apparently that caught the attention of Tom, who grew angry and grabbed the girl. The Dwarves stopped fighting when they see the troll holding Bellarose.
“Bella!” Kili exclaimed, beginning to rush forward, only to be stopped by Throin’s hand on his shoulder.
“Lay down your arms, or we’ll rip hers off,” Bert demanded, squeezing the girl a bit harder to add to the effect. They were hesitant at first, but after hearing her gasp in pain they begrudgingly did as they were told. William and Tom wasted no time in tying most of them to a spit and placing them over a fire. The ones that couldn’t fit on the spit (Thorin, Fili, Kili, Oin, Bombur, Balin, Bellarose and Bilbo) were stuffed into brown sacks with only their heads popping out. The Baggins girl was the last to be placed in a bag before she was dropped onto the pile.
“Ow!”
“Sorry,” she responded apologetically.
“Might as well not bother cooking ‘em,” William muttered. “Let’s just sit on ‘em and squash ‘em into jelly!”
“No, no, no,” Bert protested as he turned the spit. “They should be sautéed and grilled with a sprinkle of sage.”
“Ooh, that does sound quite nice!” As they spoke the rest of the Company made noises and talked in fear, though the trolls paid them no mind.
“Never mind the seasoning,” Tom interjected. “We ain’t got all night! Dawn ain’t far away, so let’s get a move on. I don’t fancy being turned to stone.” Bilbo suddenly perked up from beside his sister, making her look at him in confusion.
“Wait! You are making a terrible mistake,” he exclaimed, attempting to stand up.
“You can’t reason with them, they’re half-wits!” Dori exclaimed from the spit.
“Half-wits?” Bofur repeated worriedly. “What does that make us?” Bilbo ignored them as he finally managed to stand up, though he was still tied up.
“Uh, I meant with the, uh, with, uh, with the seasoning.”
“What about the seasoning?” Bert questioned.
“Well have you smelt them? You’re going to need something stronger than sage before you plate this lot up.” That caused an uproar from the Dwarves. Some yelled at Bilbo and called him a traitor while the ones in the sacks kicked at him.
“What do you know about cooking Dwarf?” Tom asked incredulously, only for Bert to hit him on the head with his ladle.
“Shut up, and let the, uh, flurgaburburrahobbit talk.” All eyes turned to Bilbo as he attempted to come up with something to say.
“Uh, th--the secret to cooking dwarf is, um--”
“Yes? Come on,” urged Tom.
“It’s, uh…”
“Tell us the secret.”
“Ye--yes, I’m telling you, the secret is…to skin them first!”
“Tom, get me the fileting knife,” Bert instructed, which caused a second uproar from the Company.
“What a load of rubbish!” The troll exclaimed in protest. “I’ve eaten plenty with their skins on. Scuff them, I say, boots and all.”
“Yeah, ‘e’s right,” William realized. “Nothing wrong with a bit of raw dwarf! Nice and crunchy.” He grabbed Bombur by the feet and dangled him upside down over his mouth, ready to eat him. At that moment Bellarose noticed someone slipping behind some nearby trees. It was Gandalf, she realized. He was here to help! But not if the trolls eat them all first, she realized. She needed to distract them just a little longer.
“N-No, not that one, he’s- he’s infected!” She exclaimed without thinking. That gave all three trolls pause and they all turned to face her.
“You what?” Asked Tom. The girl licked her lips nervously and looked between them.
“Yeah… He’s got worms in his…tubes,” she explained. William gasped in disgust and dropped Bombur back onto the pile.
“In-in fact they all have, they’re infested with parasites,” she continued quickly.  It’s a terrible business. I wouldn’t risk it, I really wouldn’t.”
“Parasites?” Oin repeated in shock. “Did she say parasites?”
“We don’t have parasites! You have parasites!”
“What are you talking about, lass?” The rest of the Dwarves chimed in about how they didn’t have parasites, and how she was a fool. She looked around helplessly, trying to show them that she didn’t mean it without saying anything. Her eyes met Thorin’s, and a look of realization came across his face. He kicked the others, making them look at him. After finally understanding what was going on they all looked at the trolls.
“I’ve got parasites as big as my arm.”
“Mine are the biggest parasites, I’ve got huge parasites!”
“We’re riddled!”
“Yes, I’m riddled!”
“Yes we are. Badly!”
“What would you have us do, then?” Bert questioned, looking at Bellarose. “Let ‘em all go?”
“Well…” the girl trailed off, entertaining the idea. Bert wasn’t having it though.
“You think I don’t know what you’re up to. This little ferret is taking us for fools!”
“Ferret?” She repeated, offended.
“Fools?” William repeated dumbly. Everyone looked up as a figure appeared on a large nearby boulder with what looked like a walking stick.
“The dawn will take you all!” A formidable voice called, effectively scaring the Hobbit girl.
“Who’s that?” Tom questioned.
“No idea,” Bert responded.
“Can we eat him too?” The last troll brother questioned eagerly. No one had the chance to respond before the figure lifted his walking stick and struck it against the very rock he stood upon. The ground rumbled just enough for the others to notice shortly before the boulder split in two, the smaller side giving way and falling, revealing the rising sun.
Without warning the trolls shouted in agony as they began turning to stone. Bellarose used Thorin’s shoulder to hide her face from the sight until the screaming subsided, then she looked up as the others began cheering. The figure stepped down from the boulder, revealing that it was Gandalf himself. It took no time at all to free everyone from the spit and sacks they’d been trapped in. Bellarose thanked Bofur as he untied her, then she heard Thorin speak.
“Where did you go to, if I may ask?”
“To look ahead,” the Wizard answered.
“What brought you back?”
 “Looking behind,” Gandalf responded simply before looking at the trolls. “Nasty business. Still, they are all in one piece.”
“No thanks to your burglars,” the Dwarf added, unamused. Gandalf looked at him indignantly.
“They  had the nous to play for time. None of the rest of you thought of that.” Thorin looked repentant after hearing the Wizard’s point, though he had no time to say anything before Gandalf examined the statues again.
 “They must have come down from the Ettenmoors,” he mentioned.
“Since when do mountain trolls venture this far south?” Thorin questioned.
“Oh, not for an age, not since a darker power ruled these lands.” They stared at each other for a moment, an unspoken agreement settling between them.
“They could not have moved in daylight,” the Dwarf continued.
“There must be a cave nearby, then,” Bellarose spoke without thinking, which made them look at her. She blushed in embarrassment, but the Dwarf nodded before she could apologize for eavesdropping.
“She’s right.”
“Let us see what the caves may entail then,” the Wizard nodded, beginning to lead the Company away with Thorin and Bellarose at the front of it.
Chapter 9 - The truth
Masterpost
AO3
“Master Bofur,” she turned around in surprise.
The dwarf with the funny hat was leaning against the railing of the balcony. He stood in the shadows, only the gleaming of his pipe let her make out his position. The sweet scent of the pipeweed tickled her nostrils and slightly burned in her eyes.
Stepping out into the dark of the night, a welcoming cold made her shiver. Now that the lights of the hallway no longer blinded her she could see Bofur quite clear. Underneath his hat he never seemed to be without, she could spot the familiar smile on his lips. Knowing, a bit sad, but always ready to cheer her up.
His twin braids bounced as he stood up and stepped into the light. In his other hand she could spot a bottle of wine. Most likely it had been out of Lord Elrond's cellars, a present from Thranduil. Not that it mattered, the King of the Woodland Realm had more than enough in his own cellars. A shudder ran down her spine as she remembered the cold prison, the endless wandering through the halls and the continuous calling of the ring on her finger.
“Here,” he took off his cloak, hanging it over her shoulders and draping it in a motherly gesture around her.
The warmth of the large cloak was reassuring. Thorin's harsh words echoed through her mind. He said them in anger, but they still hurt like a knife to her heart. Bella had endured his cold glances and comments on her every move. She was used to them by now. Still, there had been this tiny bit of hope it might be different this time.
Her hands clutched the soft cloak, pulling it closer around her. Bofur had always been there for her. Looking out and after her. When she had dangled from the cliff he had been the first to search. When she was lost in the woods, he had been the first to notice.
Bella turned around, her gaze meeting his eyes. Yes, she could trust Bofur. She could tell him and he surely wouldn’t deem her mad. Taking a deep breath, she relaxed a bit.
“When Dwalin knocked on my door, I had the feeling as if I had woken up from a very long dream,” her gaze trailed off into the starry night sky, “I had dreamed of an adventure. I would leave my trusted home to run off into the blue. I would go onto a journey together with thirteen dwarrows and a wizard, to face a dragon. One of them would hold on to a map and a key, granting them access to a secret passageway into the mountain. On our way we would meet the elves, stumble into a fight between giants and escape from goblins. We would ride eagels and befriend a giant bear, run from long forgotten enemies only to lose our way temporarily. We would break out of a prison, to nearly drown. And finally… we would face the dragon,” she paused, turning around to look in his eyes.
After listening to her words Bofur eyed her carefully. There was something in the way she looked at him, something in the depth of her eyes he couldn’t identify. Her gaze wandered from his eyes to the floor and up to the stars again.
From his position it looked like there had been a veil surrounding her, which now was removed. Right now in this moment he could see the true her. Too curious about what she would tell him next, he didn’t dare to move nor ask all the questions that were burning on his tongue. Bofur only took another sip from his drink, waiting for her to continue.
“The dragon died… Erebor was reclaimed, but the worst was still to come,” her voice broke.
He could see her hands clenched around the railing, trembling. Suddenly the air felt cooler, the wind harsher and in the distance he could hear cries, and smell iron and wet earth. Her small silhouette looked bigger, stronger. She had the air of a steeled warrior around her, the aura of pain, loss and heartbreak.
Bofur swallowed, it felt as if there was a completely different person standing in front of him. This didn’t feel like the gentle hobbit lass he had traveled with. He realized that they knew nothing about her. Nothing about her past, nor her family or the reason why she joined them on their journey.
“The battle… I had never seen something like that before. So much death… Blood everywhere. I still have nightmares. Every night. I see them lying before me. Beaten, bloodied… dead. I was too late, we all came too late. I lost my friends, my family, my… love. I saw them die before my eyes, unable to stop it. If I just would have been a bit stronger, a bit faster!” her fist slammed down onto the cold stone, which made Bofur nearly jump, “I hear them cry, beg, accuse me every damn night,” again and again her hand slammed into the stone.
Her whole body started to tremble and he could hear the muffled sound of sobbs. She was crying, bitterly. Honestly. His hand was just about to touch her shoulder when she abruptly straightened herself. Her eyes fixed onto a point in the distance.
“I thought for a long time I might have lost my mind. I lost my mind and nobody would believe me. I apologise, it must be quite confusing for you. But this life is different. I will be fine even if I lose my mind. For them… for him, I don’t mind,” her voice trailed off, only leaving the grave-like silence of the night.
It took Bofur a moment to take in all the new information he had acquired. Wait… ‘love’? ‘for him’? He took a step closer. His back leaned against the railing, tapping out the pipe. The cheerful grin had vanished from his face. From his position he could see her face clearer. The full moon came forth between the clouds, illuminating her features and filling her eyes with a ghost-like silver shine.
“I believe you. This story is too crazy to be made up… Answer me just one question… who?” his eyes locked onto her, waiting for a response.
“He kissed me,” her voice broke as she gently brushed over her lower lip, “with his last breath he called me something. Even now I do not know the meaning of it. Out of fear, I guess. I don’t want it to hurt all the more,” a single tear ran down her cheek.
Bofur's stomach tied itself into a tight knot while his heart felt as if a giant, ice-cold hand was clenching it tightly. He bit his tongue so as not to ask the question burning like hot coals on his tongue.
“I tried!” she cried out, scaring two birds out of the trees, “I went to the far east, all the way up north and then down south. I climbed so many mountains and traveled the skies. I’ve been among the clouds. I tried it all, but I can’t get him out of my mind. I am not able to forget him because he is my home,” her voice broke again, turning into a suffocated sob.
Bofur did the only thing he could think of and pulled her into a tight hug. She was shaking like a scared rabbit facing a wolf. How had she been able to endure this madness all by herself? Without a second thought he brushed over her hair and back, trying to calm her down. Something wet hit his shirt and through all the sobbing and fabric he nearly overheard her words.
“He is so stubborn… always had been,” well, that applied to all dwarrows he knew of.
Dwalin? No, otherwise she wouldn’t have accepted him as her brother. Bombur had a wife and Bifur would have told him surely. Kili or Fili? Too young to worry about such things. Thorin? No. Thorin was, well, Thorin. His thoughts were interrupted by another wave of sobs.
“I-I love him. I do. I should have told him that. Even now I search for reasons to stay near him, to be close, because I need him. I don’t want to lose him again. I wouldn’t be able to survive that. I just... can’t,” he rubbed her back in circles as he had done so many times before with his family as they mourned the fallen.
“He was… He… He called me ‘amrâlimê’… Before he kissed me… Before he…” died, finished Bofur her sentence as her voice trailed off once more.
Bofur froze in his very motion. Did he hear correctly? Amrâlimê? Surely he had misheard. She shifted in his arms, stiffening. As she straightened herself his coat slipped off her shoulders. The sobbing had subsided and nothing but the faint red shadow around her eyes indicated that she had been crying.
“Stupid stubborn ass of a king,” he heard Bella mutter while staring up to the stars, “I made up my mind. I will no longer live in the past, because I can change the future.”
“Thorin?! You mean like in our Thorin?!” Bofur gaped at her, dropping his pipe, “Wait, wait, wait… this is… Thorin? Really?”
~
Fili and Kili had entered the grand hall some time earlier, proudly boasting about having gained a sister. They had whispered with Balin, stealing glances at Thorin. The king could have guessed what all of that was about. His guess was proven as Balin came over to him, a meaningful look in his eyes and a determined expression on his face.
“You have to talk to her, Thorin. She is essential to our quest. And all of us can see how you look at her, the glances you give her when you think nobody is looking, how you care for her wellbeing. Taking breaks when she tires, slipping parts of your rations into her pack and making sure she is safe when the path gets rough. I am advising you as a friend. You ought to do the right thing. Apologise. You know as well your words were too harsh. Best you don’t let my brother hear about this, or you may get more than just an earful,” Balin spoke in a stern voice.
The older dwarf patted Thorin on the shoulder before he left to join his brother. Thorin watched his company, his friends, merrily playing with the food, singing and enjoying themselves. Was Balin right? He did care for her and caught himself red-handed more often as time had gone by, watching the gentle creature. He made sure she slept near the fire and that she was never too far from him or Dwalin. He worried constantly when she rode alone in the back or disappeared in the evenings. He gritted his teeth when he saw the hobbit lass hugging Dwalin or sleeping nestled in the other dwarves’ arms.
Bofur had just slipped back inside as Balin had finished his lecture. Immediately the mood got a bit lighter. It might have been his cheerful personality, but more likely the message he brought with him.
“Aye, our lady is all better and hungry like a little pebble!”
Thorin relaxed and exhaled the breath he had held in. He raised his head as two familiar, furry boots stopped right in front of him. The dwarf owning the shoes wore a completely unusual expression on his face. Was that grief and deep-rooted pain he spotted behind his brown beard?
“You better not ruin it again. She had been through more than enough already. Most of which was your fault!” Bofur grumbled, right before turning around and squeezing himself between Bombur and Oin.
Thorin had no time to answer, nor to fully process what was going on. Suddenly the room went silent. The dwarrows turned their heads, just like they had done when Bofur entered. Gandalf and Lord Elrond interrupted their conversation to watch the hobbit lass enter.
She was wearing a plain white dress, the curly hair openly flowing over her back. Mahal, she was beautiful. How come she could converse with the other dwarrows so naturally? How come she could smile so easily with them? How was she able to converse with those bloody elves?!
He wasn’t staring, was he? Hastily he looked away, but his gaze would always be drawn right back to her. Thorin noticed the red puffiness around her eyes, the faint biting marks on her lower lip and the slight tremble of her fingers whenever she gestured or pointed something out. She didn’t eat as much as she would need to.
Wait, was she coming over? After all he had said, how could she still come over so casually? He had obviously hurt her very much, he had no right to talk to her, no right to see her.
Once again he caught himself staring. He lowered his head, inspecting the tips of his shoes with way too much interest. Two furry large feet stopped right in front of him. The room went quiet, if it was due to Bofur jumping on the table or being close to the burglar, he did not know.
“May I have this dance?” the soft voice of his burglar brought him back.
Like an idiot he stared at her extended hand. Such a small palm, slender fingers and soft skin. How could he have brought this gentle creature on their quest? Now her skin was bruised and split open where the hilt of the sword had dug deep into her flesh. He had no right to ruin her life. Bofur was right. So why, why couldn’t he say no to those eyes?!
“My pleasure,” he grumbled into his beard, she probably wouldn’t have understood it.
To his surprise she giggled, grabbed his hand with much more strength than he would have ever thought she could possess and dragged him into the center of the room.
~
Bella placed her hands in the rough palms of the dwarven king, a warm tingly feeling rushing through her body. This was like a dream coming true. It had been so long since she had danced, danced with her love and a heart lighter than a feather.
Bofur's song cleared her head and filled her with joy. She lifted her head and their eyes met. It felt just like back then, but this time his hands were warm, no blood wetted the ground and she wasn’t losing him.
“I love you, Thorin Oakenshield, always have and always will. When you left me I never thought I might get another chance to ever see you again, but here we are. Together once more. When you entered my home for the second time now, I considered just not letting you leave. But for that to happen I most likely would have needed to break your legs. I also thought about letting you leave on this cursed mission of yours, but the uncertainty of what might have happened to you would have brought me to the grave. So I came along. And I would have followed you a thousand times more. I can’t stand a world without you any longer, I experienced it once, that was more than enough,” she looked him in the eyes, the words withering on her tongue like a whispered cry for help, and pressed her lips tightly together, swallowing the truth and with that her feelings.
Not a single word left her mouth.
His face was straight, unmoved by the dance, by the music… by her. Only in his eyes she could spot the hint of something familiar. For a moment there he looked just like ‘her’ Thorin. But he wasn’t ‘him’.
“I-” he averted his gaze from her eyes, “I should apologize for my rude outburst earlier, I-” she interrupted him by letting go of his hands and stopping their aimless spinning through the room. She opened her mouth as if to say something and nearly set free the words she had held back earlier. Instead she raised her hand, telling him to wait.
“I missed this, I missed you. And no matter what you say I will follow you. I will not let you die again,” she spoke, staring in his deep blue eyes, her vision slightly blurred from another wave of tears, but a smile let her glow from the inside out.
This would have to be enough for the moment. Yes, this was fine. Being able to stand by his side was enough for now.
Thorin flinched at her honest statement, the meaning of her words still hadn’t reached him fully. She missed him? How could she have missed him? He had never met her before that day he had knocked on her door, before he had dragged this gentle creature out of her home and her peaceful life.
For a moment his mind wandered back to the second he first laid eyes on the small hobbit lass. So soft and weak, yet headstrong and fiercer than a cornered dragon. Beautiful. So beautiful he couldn’t help but to stare. He had been rude and mean even though she had shared her home and food with them.
Even now he could only stare at her, stare at this wonderful creature Mahal had let him meet. He wanted to say something, ask her what she meant. Ask her why she would miss him, why she was able to make him question all his decisions, even himself. Ask his hobbit how  she was able to give him the feeling of home, of peace.
“I am still a bit drowsy and the wounds keep acting up, so I should probably retire early today,” she said apologetically.
Both of them knew it was not true. She moved too fluently, too gracefully in the king's eyes for her injuries to still hinder her. She bit her lip again, like she did more often these days, forcing herself to smile at him, hoping her face looked reassuring and calm and not like the painful grimace it felt like.
His hand twitched. He needed all his willpower not to just grab her and trace the bite marks on her lower lip with his thumb until they disappeared. A thousand promises and ideas rushed through his mind, which he could whisper into her ears to make her forget the sadness, the pain, his own idiotic behaviour. He just wanted to see her smile again.
“Bel… Bella-”
“Good night, master Oakenshield.”
She didn’t even call him by his name. This fact felt like one of Dwalin’s punches right in the stomach. Why did she not call him like she had when they had first met and when the trolls had attacked them. Thorin would never admit it to himself, but it felt right when she called him by his name, he felt at peace.
Only now the whole meaning of the words she had spoken earlier reached him. That last sentence she had whispered, what was the meaning of her words? Not letting him die… ‘again’?! Something was not right. Before he could even try following her, a large muscular figure stepped into his way.
“What did you say to my sister? She left so fast I wasn’t even able to speak to her.”
His best friend towered over him. With a short nod towards the king's nephews, Dwalin managed to send them after the hobbit. Thorin worried about her wellbeing more than he would like to admit, she hadn’t eaten nearly enough. Maybe it would be better to follow her, after all. Sure, his nephews would look after their new sister like Dori watched over Ori, still… there was this uneasiness inside him, whenever Bella was out of sight.
“Tell me the truth, Thorin. Do you like her?”
...
Suddenly the blinding light turned from white to golden and under the open pale blue cloud filled smokeless sky you panted across the deck of your ship spotting the other ships moving to land on the carriers below in the setting sun. Peering upwards your jaw dropped seeing the roots of the trees were gone, “The roots.”
Amrod, “They’re gone!” He said standing up with his twin both with braids swaying just barely in the gentle breeze.
Patting your chest you found the end of the rope formerly holding Thorin to you now you noticed was gone making you look down and then turn around. Only to let out a shriek making your uncles grab and pull you backwards away from the blue eyed raven haired naked Dwarf climbing up from his side to his knees peering up at you wide eyed in confusion. “Who are you?!”
His lips parted as he looked you all over, lowly asking, “What?” Lowering his gaze his lips parted and he let out a laugh, “I’m me again!” His eyes fell on you again and he patted his chest, “Rin, it’s me!”
Shaking your head you replied, “I’m not overly familiar with naked men. You’ll have to be a bit more specific.”
Reaching back Thorin pulled the chain from around his neck bringing the arkenstone into your view parting your lips. Maedhros stated, “Thorin?”
Thorin lowered his hands to his crotch saying, “I know this is strange, and I completely understand your uncertainty on the circumstances, my nudity for one. Just hear me out please.”
Maglor, “Perhaps, we should clothe you first,” he said shrugging out of his jacket he passed to Thorin, who used it to wrap around his waist with a quick grin, “Come on inside.”
Over the intercom Beren stated, “You all should come see this.”
Turning your head you giggled at Celegorm asking, “Huan didn’t change too, did he?” Drawing out his spy glass to find the dog circling in an empty corner on the deck of one of the ships well below yours docking on the carriers. “Nope, he’s still a massive fluff ball. Napping it off. Better let him rest.” Following your father you entered the ship and made for the piloting deck, on the way Maglor led Thorin into your linen closet to find a set of clothes for him.
Straight to the portal director your lips parted in reading the runes on the top side you shifted to read better, “Lindon, The Shire, Bree-,” turning your head you asked, “Ada? I think we’re back in Aman.” At your side he shifted the 20 sided object now bearing new symbols making him chuckle, “Are we?”
He nodded in Thorin’s return to join you again, “It appears we are. Numenor to Tol Eressea stretching from Lindon around to Rohan.”
Looking up again the men formed a half circle around you in Maglor’s stating, “Now that we’ve clothed our stowaway, perhaps we could hear him out.”
Thorin wet his lips and looked you over as you asked, “You’re a skin changer then?”
He shook his head, “No, not at all. See, first off, my name, Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain,”
Maedhros, “What mountain?”
Thorin, “Erebor. From what I understand it was formed after you all had died.” The men nodded and he continued, “Erebor was lost, to a Dragon Smaug sixty years ago, and my Company and I had ventured out to reclaim it, and we did. Defending it in a swarm of orc and goblin forces I fell. And I have no idea why Eru decided to turn me into a dog, but he led me to you.”
Maglor, “Why would he send you to us?”
Thorin’s eyes remained on you, “The brown ram on your lower back, Rin, I saw it after you first brought me here, after my bath.” Your lips parted and he stated, “Thorin Battle-Ram Oakenshield, my name. I was killed and sent to my One. I know this is difficult, and you know next to nothing on me past my stubbornness, and as long as you wish to grant me in gaining your trust I understand fully. Just know, that dog or not I would not give up a moment of knowing you.”
After a nod you wet your lips saying, “Perhaps we should get you home then.”
Thorin moved closer looking at the portal map stating, “Would we be able to make a stop first? A good friend of mine, Bilbo, he lives in the Shire. I know he would love to meet all of you, and along the way Lord Elrond would be pleased to see you again, and meet you, especially. Plus, I owe him an apology.”
Peering upwards you heard the alarm sound and you strolled through the room saying in your try to hide your bodies urge to shake in the shock of this discovery and his admission of wishing to court you in the future, “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to meet this Bilbo of yours on the way to Elrond. I’ll change the sails. Make it within the hour.”
Up to the deck they all wandered as Caranthir took the helm to send out word of the new locations complete with full etching of maps sent out on hovering trays to the carriers down below followed by eager messages from those remembering Aman to be eager to meet their surviving relatives or friends. Though all of the others assuming to be with none were curious on how they would be greeted and how they would fit in this world. Yet atop your ship you sat with Thorin in his sharing the details on what he knew of the land of Lindon with a far greater amount of information on the Blue Mountains under you until on the edges of the center of the Shire Thorin caught onto a commotion making him mumble, “What is going on?”
Following his gaze you asked, “Are Hobbits usually this active at night?”
Thorin shook his head, “Not in my experience outside of birthday celebrations and festivals. That’s BagEnd, Bilbo’s home. Something must be wrong.”
Maedhros looked between you and Thorin at your side then said, “We should go down and check on him. To be safe.” Thorin nodded and you, Maedhros, Maglor, Elurid, Elurin and Thorin went down the platform to the main street in the Shire where the commotion grew louder and Thorin rushed ahead hearing the apparent Hobbit in charge posting up a sign saying, ‘Estate sale, 8 am sharp.’
“Estate sale?!” Thorin barked and the man flinched turning his gaze to the puffing Dwarf, “Just who ordered this sale?!”
The Hobbit replied, “Bilbo Baggins has not been seen of in nearly eleven months. Presumed Dead.”
Thorin’s brows dropped and he barked back, “Bilbo is not dead! And you have no right to sell of his things as if they are yours to do so!”
Extending his hand he guided you towards the door automatically luring your family forward through the sea of parting Hobbits while Thorin found the spare key Bilbo had mentioned once and unlocked the door for you to duck inside to oddly cozy tiny home. Once your family had hurried inside Thorin shouted, “All of you clear out! Bilbo is one of my dearest friends and I am not leaving this Hobbit Hole until he returns to claim it! Anyone forcing entry will meet a grisly end!” After tearing the sign down and in half he slammed the door behind him and bolted it.
Still panting he turned to catch your curious grins feeling his scowl dropping at your asking, “Did we just get roped into house snatching? Mr King Under the Mountain?”
Weakly he chuckled and in the sound of the chattering Hobbits hurrying past the open gate the final Hobbit closed behind him stealing another glance at the house slowly lighting up in Thorin’s path to light the long since abandoned fireplaces. Elured stated, “Since the home has been empty for nine months Amrod will bring us down some supplies, no telling how long poor Master Baggins will take in his trip back from Erebor.”
Thorin, “Thank you. But trust me when I say, Bilbo will be eternally grateful for this. He assisted in restoring my kin to Erebor, it would be a poor way to repay him in allowing his to be sold off in pieces due to helping me.” A smirk eased across your lips and you waited for the rest of your family to show up, though not before a knock sounded on the door making him call out, “No trespassers!”
On the other side of the door he heard a clearly female voice stating, “My name is Bella, I’m Bilbo’s sister. I heard you’ve locked yourselves in.”
Thorin eased the door open after unlocking it and let her inside to your curiosity until you could see why, his eyes wandered to her clearly swollen belly making him say, “We have food on the way, though there is some tea in the pantry, if you’d care for some.”
She shook her head and he led her into the sitting room where he dusted off Bilbo’s favorite chair, “Now, I am curious, just what my dear brother has been up to.”
All the details of the journey had been shared only for your group to tense at the mention of the magic ring Bilbo had found left unmentioned until after she had been escorted back home by the young group of Gamgees waiting outside. In your solitude Thorin again found your side asking, “I couldn’t help but notice your tensing in hearing about Bilbo’s ring, might I ask why, all it does is turn him invisible.”
Maglor, “There are very few rings of magic forged of gold limited to invisibility alone.”
Thorin, “It is something of a threat then?”
“I wouldn’t wager if that ring had been found by anyone but a Hobbit the danger of it would be more evident.”
A content sigh in the round of smoking from Thorin using a spare pipe on the mantle hummed along to your father’s tune on the violin. Another cup of tea for you later his eyes wandered to you in the tile of your head to rest against Celebrimbor’s leg beside you sitting awkwardly long off the small couch he was sharing with Celegorm. A deep inhale came from you at the pat on your knee opening your eyes to find Thorin saying, “There are seven beds, if you’d like to choose. My Company had 13 and we all managed to fit snuggly across the spares.” You nodded and stood going with the equally as groggy Celebrimbor to take your picks.
Each room seemed more cozy than the last, with adorably petite yet spacious beds fitting each room perfectly for comfort while allowing plenty of room around it. Removing your boots you collected your bag of clothes brought down earlier and left here in a guess it would be the one you would choose and you changed into your silk pajamas and lowered onto the bed. Tucking up your legs you settled onto the bed still struggling against the whirl of your mind on the appearance of the man formerly trapped as a dog bound to you so faithfully. A stolen glance of your mark in the mirror was had and your fingers traced it with the fingers on your arm resting across your middle.
Closing your eyes again the image of him cast in firelight and wreathed in smoke with a deep rumbling hum of that warming voice of his reminding you of his near constant grumbles and his shouts so similar to his loud barks. There was little space to be found and yet you held an unnamed ache in sleeping alone again. No longer a dog he was shorter than you, yes, but the same size he was as a dog, long wavy raven curls laid down his back and still those adoring heartbreakingly blue eyes.
That normal stern demeanor of his no more threatening than it was when you had first gotten him from the pound. There should have been more of a change and yet bare on the decks he was revealed to retain a great deal of dark hair covering his broad chiseled body with a strip going straight from his naval under his waistband over the small poof of his belly marking you had indeed fed him ample enough for his comfort. Weeks he had sprawled across you warming you and matching your slumbering hums with vibrating snores you greatly missed, wishing to see if you could find the comfort in his company as you had now his true form had been revealed.
Sleep was just as troublesome for Thorin to find, and after a stolen glance through your open doorway to memorize your slumbering pose and expression his nightly habit of adoring your star speckled glowing skin visible over the covers laying crooked over your diagonal body spread out with a foot dangling off the end. The room across from yours was his and laying out across it he rolled over and forced his eyes shut to rest as to not miss any portion of the day with you.
.
Every inch of his life was laid bare sating the curiosity of you and your family since he had learned so much of you all in your time together. Daily in pairs you would explore, learning more of the Shire, befriending the Hobbits now relaxing with Bella’s confidence that Thorin had been truthful and that Bilbo would return soon. And soon indeed he had returned. The sight of the floating whale hovering over the city brought Gandalf along with him and under the great Oak tree in the front yard you sat reading a book beside Thorin, who loved clarifying terms and names of those inside spreading your smile and deepening his under the watch of Maedhros and Maglor who took to reviving the tiny garden outside. Down the street Bilbo strolled with his walking stick wading through the sea of greetings from his neighbors between glances up at the whale lazily shifting its tailfin to remain aloft which none of the others seemed to pay any mind to.
At the end of the street his chest puffed up and he hurried along faster, “Just who is that in my garden?!”
Gandalf picked up his pace in noticing he was being left behind saying, “Take care, Bilbo. No telling what mischief is afoot.”
At the front gate Bilbo’s hand found the welcoming latch he had dreamed of undoing for nearly a year now, “Excuse you! Just who-?!” His first step inside had him frozen in place finding Thorin smiling widely at him in his rise to his bare feet as you closed your book. Your upwards glance dropped Gandalf’s jaw in recognizing your resemblance right away, though mistaking you for another Elleth and wondering at the odd periwinkle dress you were relaxing in against the trunk of the tree. “Thorin..? You’re alive?!”
“Yes.” Thorin crossed the distance with arms extending to wrap the Hobbit tightly in his arms, the bag from his shoulder dropped along with the small chest of gold freeing his arms to snap around his middle, “Hello Bilbo.” In pulling back his hands shifted to the Hobbit’s shoulders and he smiled again at him.
“How?! I saw you die! I sat with you! We-, buried you…” His eyes dropped to the Dwarf’s neck and he drew out the chain revealing the glowing stone on its pendant, “With, this…”
His eyes snapped up again in the ripple of his name being shared through the house signaling the exit of your full family, all smiling at the famous Bilbo they had heard of, he nods, “Yes. I am not clear on the details, however I am back again and your home is safe.” He glances over at Gandalf by his pony, “Dwalin did not return with you?”
“No, um, I got a letter, my sister is expecting. I returned to, help, and pack.” He looks at you and you smile at him, “Hello. Um,” he holds out his hand, “Bilbo Baggins.”
You offer your hand in return, “Elurin, Daughter of Elured.”
“El-, as in, didn’t Lord Elrond have an Elurin in his family.”
Maglor, “You mean our Nephew? How is he faring? Thorin mentioned he is on our way. Meadhros and I are anxious to see him again. Plus our dear Luthien is eager to see him as well after all we’ve heard.”
Bilbo whispered, “Luthien-…”
Thorin chuckled guiding him inside, “Come, have tea before you collapse then we can explain it all and aid your sister in mending and packing all you wish to move to Erebor.”
Bilbo nodded and Thorin lifted his bag and chest while you shook your skirt settling it over your feet and smiled at Bilbo saying, “Master Baggins, we hope we’ve kept your house well.”
Thorin nodded guiding him inside between Amrod and Amras who ducked back inside, “Yes, we arrived in time to see them pinning up an estate sale sign out front. Saw a quick end to that.”
You giggled behind the pair saying, “Yes, after a slew of death threats they kept clear of your lands.” The silk skirt of yours gave a small poof in settling at his table beside Luthien in a similar lilac gown riddled with a row of bows down the back drawing Gandalf’s eyes from the Elf Lords while Maglor and Maedhros went to wash up. Claiming his own seat your eyes snapped over to him and a grin eased onto his lips in the gentle light of your company, “You must be Gandalf. Thorin has shared so much about you.”
Gandalf nodded, “Forgive me, my Lady, you resemble your aunt Queen Elwing-,”
Thorin left Bilbo’s belongings on the bench in the hall and guided the Hobbit to a chair across from yours leaving the one between you for himself, “Yes, introductions,”
Luthien, “Master Bilbo, I am Lady Luthien,”
Bilbo whispered, “Luthien…”
Then looked to Celebrimbor in his saying, “I am Celebrimbor, son of Curufin, my father was not among us. Though, these are my uncles, Amrod, Amras, Caranthis, Celegorm,” Each bowing their heads to the Hobbit with a steadily growing blush at the famous names, “Beren is cooking along with Turin and Tirion is fishing with some fauntlings alongside Huan.” His head turned at the return of the others, “Yes, and Maglor and Maedhros,”
Through the door your father and uncle entered with baskets of goodies, “We heard a rumor our Master Bilbo had returned.”
Crouching through the doorway they grinned and Gandalf looked between you three and Celebrimbor stated, “Now, for our silver haired trio, Princes Elurin, Elured and his daughter, you’ve met, Elurin, or RinRin as we affectionately call her. Though everyone else calls her Madame Dior.”
Bilbo looked you over and felt his hands fold around the cup of tea Thorin set before him in his taking the seat at your side. Fidgeting his fingers around the cup in his tongue’s flick to wet his lips hastily, “I, um, forgive me, but aren’t the lot of you-,”
Maglor chuckled settling on the ground beside Gandalf saying, “Dead, once yes, among those forbidden to enter Valinor after the Kinslayings we were sent to a set of islands, until such a time when we had earned forgiveness and were sent back here to Aman.”
Gandalf nodded, “Is that where you found Thorin?”
You giggled in a sip of your own cup of tea making Thorin chuckle and shift in his seat to begin sharing the story of his transformation and the lands now part of this world again along with a great number of Elves he might recognize the names of.
.
Helping him pack up his home through the rest of the week along with that of his sister’s upon her agreeing to return with him to Erebor in hopes of an adventure of her own. Trails of Dwarves began to arrive from the Blue Mountains heading for their recovered home and at the confirmation of their safety in the numbers of Elves and Numenor they boarded the ships and enjoyed the flight over all the way to Rivendell. An eager hopping entrance into the main courtyard brought the confused Lady Arwen and Lindir to you after hearing the whispers of those old enough to recognize you. The sound of their approach had you turning with a wide grin parting their lips seeing you and especially the stone around your neck.
Lindir broke the silence, “Queen Elwing?” Bowing his head.
You shook your head, “No, I am her niece, Elurin, daughter of Elured.” You looked to Arwen, “You look a great deal like my great grandmother Luthien.”
Arwen inched closer with a hopeful grin on her face, “I am Lady Arwen, Lord Elrond’s daughter.”
Your grin doubled, “Yes, Bilbo shared a description of your portrait, returned from Lothlorien already?” you glanced around, “Is your father out on a hunt, I wished to meet him for myself before my Uncles steal him away.”
“Ada had marched to Lothlorien not two days past.” You nodded and your grin dimmed a bit, “Troubles with Moria on Lothlorien’s borders.”
In a bounce on your toes you nodded saying, “We will go and meet him then. I promise we’ll be back before long, have proper introductions and a full visit.” You turned, “If you’ll excuse me.” Hurrying through the courtyard you heard the whispers of the confused Elves behind you all dying to their stunned stares up at your ship leading the hovering fleet of metal creature crafts off to Lothlorien.
.
“It seems Elrond is off to Lothlorien’s borders, trouble at Moria.”
Maedhros grinned saying, “Moria it is. Let’s go help our dear Nephew destroy some orc.”
With a chuckle you turned for your room unbuckling your skirt to remove it, straight for your closet you went and hung it up leaving your jacket with it you replaced with your armored jacket and pants you covered with your weapon holsters, especially your tall flat boots you filled with several more hidden weapons.
Seated on the bed you spotted Thorin, who perked up in your step out again fidgeting with the sleeves of his mithril armor cuffs under his layers seeing you offering him his robe and Orcrist you helped him to strap on. “Don’t you go and do anything foolish.”
Thorin chuckled saying, “Coming from the woman who leapt from one flying ship to another,” making you roll your eyes and lead the way to the others in the loading dock. Passing Bilbo seated comfortably in your study with a good book relaxing without the whispers of the ring you had sealed in a protective box to destroy after you had met with Elrond.
.
Swords crashed and into the sea of orcs explosions went off clearing great circles of land in which you all dropped through the open rocky lands to the open front gate. From above concentrated fire was unleashed onto their confused forces while the Elves after a moments pause raced to form lines again to clear the path to their lost friends and relatives. Flashes of silver hair and in the roar of the Balrog exiting the front gates lips parted in your soft whisper triggering an explosion of light from you dwindling the army against you to dust. Wisps of light returned to fade out of the gate it had burst through and clearly inside the once packed kingdom now sat empty signaling Frerin and his kin who had chosen to fight to explore the entrance of the kingdom. All agreed those in the ships decided to remain here under the rule of Thorin’s brother while Thorin joined you and your family in greeting Elrond.
His stunned expression upon seeing his uncles was nothing compared to seeing his twin, Elros who was leading the Numenorean forces who embraced him tightly and pulled back to reveal the points on his ears showing they wouldn’t be parted again earning Elrond’s tugging him into another far tighter embrace. A mistaken utterance of ‘mother’ was quickly righted and you wee properly acquainted with your Nephew who was glad to meet you and his lost Uncles before moving onto the rest of your group.
In his distraction you giggled and turned your head spotting Oropher and the Elf you assumed to be his son, his hands on his son’s shoulders with a wide grin explaining the kingdom he had been sent to after his death. In your move to greet him yourself you heard him saying, “Taule and your sister are aboard our ship.”
“Sis-,”
Oropher nodded in the crack of his voice, “Yes, Marya, who is very excited to meet you and your Legolas, who is back in Greenwood I expect?”
Thranduil nodded and swallowed dryly, “Yes,” he cleared his throat and his eyes shifted to you making Oropher chuckle and extend his hand welcoming you to join them.
“Thranduil, this is Madame Dior, one of my greatest friends, Marya’s too. Also Thorin Oakenshield’s One it seems.” Thranduil looked from you to Thorin at your side and bowed his head, “You are to be neighbors when a courtship can be managed.”
Thranduil gave you a soft grin, “It is a pleasure to meet you. Marya does not battle?”
You giggled making his brow twitch up, “Marya is barely to your knee, King Thranduil, but she is rather fond of dueling with wooden swords. Be prepared for ambushes in the future.” Freeing an oddly relieved chuckle from him at not having missed so much of her life.
Oropher, “Taule and I were quite stunned to have been blessed by Eru with a daughter. We do hope to visit often, and please do not worry about Amon Lanc, Thorin has shared it was lost and we will assist you in restoring it again. There perhaps we could use as a sort of mixing point for our kin and their lost relatives, if you would agree of course. I am but a Steward now, so no butting heads.” He looked to you, “The polls are due in two days still, no putting it off.”
Thranduil looked to you, “Poll?”
You smiled answering, “Uncle Maedhros is campaigning against Tirion and Huan for the Presidency. If he wins it will be his 12,000th year in office. Every century there is a campaign to see who will lead us.”
Thranduil, “Presidency, is that how you refer to Kingship?”
Oropher laughed patting his son’s shoulder, “No, Maedhros refused to take the title of King, so we decided on President instead, same rights, though every century others are free to campaign against him.”
Your head turned hearing your father, “RinRin!”
A whistle and raise of your hand brought their group over bringing Celeborn, having been roped into it in his curious watching. Welcoming hugs filled the area and off to the distant forest you strolled stealing a glimpse down at Thorin asking, “You do not want to go with your brother?”
Thorin stole a glance back at the gates and shook his head, “Frerin and I had different experiences in those halls. He was knocked unconscious early in Azanulbizar, woke in the aftermath. I however witnessed Azog, the white orc, behead my grandfather.” The pain in his voice shifted your hand to timidly fold your fingers around his making him glance up at you with a hopeful grin, shifting his hand to fold around yours in return tenderly. “I will explore Moria, just not yet. It holds too great a weight for me still.”
“That I can understand.”
With a nod he asked, “I don’t believe I ever got to see your palace you mentioned.”
“Oh, it was on the other half of Doriath.” The name turned Thranduil’s head to look at you with lips parted making you flash him a quick grin, “Your Ada and us share the island. I bet it is a great deal changed from how you once knew it, or so he says.” You looked to Thorin again, “Though we do have a winter palace on Gondolin. It is beautiful when it snows. Everything shimmers under the sunlight and it seems to stretch on forever. We skate on the frozen lakes and build castles out of snow. It is the only island that snows, and the music we play, from one sunrise to another,” you giggled making him chuckle in pleasure of seeing your awed grin, “For weeks sometimes, then it just seems to explode. Just bursts of green tearing through the snow, and there are so many colors after you would not believe it on word alone.”
“I doubt there would be anything you would say I would not believe.” He hummed back to you in a loving gaze up at you, “Perhaps, our winter is upon us, if it does not suit your tastes I could manage to request a tour of your Gondolin’s winter to see it for myself.”
.
A great celebration in Lothlorien was prepared for and from the platforms of the ships more Elves came to join their relatives, all pausing in awe of Lady Luthien who greeted them all and hurried to greet Elrond for herself widening his own awed smile as she delved into his life. Though that reaction was nothing compared to Taule’s near tackling hug on Thranduil freeing an astonished laugh and tight hug in return that paused in his noticing Marya swaying on her feet only to tightly hug him when he lowered to greet her. In his arms she nuzzled closer to his chest and fresh shirt thanks to your bout of changing and bathing upon arrival. Lipte however refused to stand aside and wiggled under his arm with tail wagging making him chuckle and lift the pair to sit on his lap in his abandoned seat behind him to speak with his parents more in their settling beside him.
Sunset came with a tour of your ship in the flight to Mordor. Through the darkening skies you sailed awing your first time passengers and to your harpoon canon each Nazgul fell while Elrond and Bilbo did the honors of dropping the ring into Mt Doom then hurried back to ride the wave of the explosions following the destruction of the city. Clear over Gondor while the Tol Eressea ships landed in their island in the distance not far from Doriath that Oropher showed to Thranduil through his telescope spreading his excited grin to visit it once the decided visit to Erebor and Greenwood were through.
*
Loudly Dwalin shouted, “ALL OF YOU JUST SHOVE OFF! KING FILI COMING THROUGH!” His hands shooing a path free while Kili and Gloin carried his chair bound brother with a brace over his fractured leg from his fall on Raven Hill. Just barely were the Elves able to save him and the weight of the repairs on the forges, still badly damaged from Smaug. None of the other Dwarf Lords could agree on any trade deals and none especially wished to give their resources for anything less than a hill of gold it seemed.
Sighing to himself he said, “If Uncle were here he could handle this. Even Dain is being obstinate on lending forces for repairs.”
Kili stole another glance at the rug Gloin warned him of so he wouldn’t trip, “Perhaps Amad could help. She is due in a week.”
Fili sighed, “I had hoped to have it mastered by her arrival.”
Gloin, “You are just crowned, none expected you to master it right off. It is a bit of tradition to be troubling to the new King. They will see reason.”
The group halted at the sounding of horns turning their heads announcing the arrival of guests at the gates. Fili mumbled, “I wonder who that could be.”
Kili, “Do we go?”
Fili shrugged, then nodded with a smirk, “Yes, the Council forces me to wait on answers, they can wait for my arrival. Gloin, for the gates please.”
Gloin chuckled and turned heading for the gates that opened allowing a tall group of Elves through making Dwalin mumble, “What is Thranduil doing here?” The sight of a trio of Hobbits beside him had the Dwarf shouting for a clear path to his One and future in laws.
Straight up to Bilbo he stormed widening the eyes of the Company all pouring into the hall shouting, “Bilbo!”
Dwalin, “How are you back so quickly?” He bowed his head to Bella at her spreading grin in taking in her future brother in law.
Bilbo turned his head and gasps sounded at Thorin’s stepping out from behind you after insisting you entered first, “Thorin brought me.”
Nearing him Dwalin reached out to touch his cousin making Thorin laugh and settle his hands on his shoulders as his pendant slid out stirring even more gasps and whispers, “Hello Cousin, it is me, and quite a tale, though first I should say, it led me to new friends, and my One.” Their eyes turned to the group around Thranduil, who was holding Marya in his arms patting her back in her napping nuzzle against his chest in his head nodding to you beside him. Thorin glanced up at Fili, whose chair was being lowered to its resting legs and he moved closer keeping him from trying to climb off it to pull the boys into a tight hug, “You’re safe. I knew you would be.”
Kili beamed at him, “You’re back!”
Fili smiled saying, “Good! You can handle the Lords!” Thorin huffed and Fili shook his head removing his crown to settle on to of Thorin’s head making him chuckle hearing, “They would never be so unmoving with you.”
Thorin scoffed, “No, they know me, they will no doubt outright refuse to aid us at all.”
Fili huffed, “All the same, we’ve been trying to get the furnaces repaired and no one will budge.”
Thorin wet his lips then peered up at you in your move to peer over his shoulder at the notes Fili had passed him, “Perhaps if it is just a furnace, you could play to their irritations to gain their loyalty.”
Thorin smirked and purred up at you making the company glance between you at his asking, “Irritations?”
“Unless your kin do adore and treasure the company of Elves. Then our aid would make the plan moot.”
Lowly he chuckled then glanced back at Maedhros who said, “If we are to be family, one day, then let us see those furnaces of yours. If it is simple earth and metal it would be no trouble, we have the numbers and supply easily roused. Besides, those visiting Greenwood would require a job of some sort to fill their days.”
Again Fili was lifted and from their hushed conversation Dwalin and his budding family broke freeing Bilbo to show them up to their own apartment in the Royal Wing freeing Dwalin to curiously take Thorin’s side across from you to begin asking questions on the full tale making the others laugh at his transformation.
Sure enough words had spread and while Elves scouted through the ruins of Amon Lanc and you stole a trip to Rivendell to greet Elrond’s family and people in his crafted home Thorin waited longingly for your return treasuring the first signs of your public marker for courtship, a union between your lands and people. Elves aided with the returns of the forges and more ships helped to aid in the travel of Dwarves and Elves across Middle Earth restoring and repairing once lost relics and monuments to their former glory. All the while the Dwarf Lords returned for the proper coronation of Thorin Oakenshield and to pay their respects and pledge their loyalty to him, something they would prove by being uncommonly agreeable to aiding in whatever endeavor he imagined to keep the Elves from overrunning their kingdoms. Yet still no matter their grievances their cold exteriors melted seeing their King so boots over beard in love with his One an your growing return of affections in leaning more about him and his world you were set to be a part of.
.
Early on the morning you were set to return Thorin groggily sat up and in the realization of your impending arrival he hopped up out of bed to hurry to his bath. Grinning madly he scrubbed, dried then dressed, at his vanity however his brows furrowed in the absence of his comb. His turn to look on the ground halted in the swing of his leg around the bench to look on the ground hearing a voice say, “So do I get to comb your hair or are you going to growl and hide in the closet from me?”
A wide smile split across his face in your stroll over from your place on the end of his bed to sit between his legs on the end of the bench, “You alone have the right to touch my hair.”
With a giggle you took in his adoring gaze taking in the moment of you two alone in his quarters at your elbow resting behind you on the vanity, cherishing the sight of you draped so contently beside him in your favored pale yellow gown in a thick and warming velvet hugging you perfectly. In a low hum he asked, “How did you manage to get in? The horns should have sounded.”
Your grin returned and you said, “I might have managed to convince the guards on the overlook not to. Wanted to surprise you.”
His eyes narrowed in a subtle inch closer to you, “Which guards?”
“I did not catch the names of half, though Dwalin and I believe it was Bifur, and Kili was lost in writing another letter to Tauriel I believe. They managed to convince the others.”
Thorin, “Nice to know my kin be so easily swayed to allowing intruders.”
“I believe you should be more concerned with my powers of persuasion than their eagerness to surprise you.” Making him chuckle and wet his lips.
“True, then I imagine it best for me to gain your favor then.”
In a feigned sigh you asked, “Yes, but how ever will you manage that?”
A tender brush of the fingers on his raised hand stroked across your cheek, “I haven’t the foggiest idea.” Closing the distance to plant a chaste kiss on your lips, “Any hints?”
Deeply he chuckled at your nip on your lip, “Mmm.” Timidly your fingers rose to brush along his bearded cheek luring him closer for a second gentle kiss followed by your raising the comb between you at the sounding of the horns. “First, we should see to that hair.” Making him chuckle and turn his back to you when you stood, “If you are in the mood for surprises you will adore Marya’s.” Leaning in after a stroke of the comb your hands met his shoulder deepening his grin, “As one of my greatest friends she does hope to become the very best of friends with you in return.”
He nodded and chuckled again, “I look forward to it. As long as I don’t have to mind Lipte all day again.” Making you giggle and rise up to start on his hair again.
Returning Home Chapter 20- Thorin Oakenshield x OC
Tumblr media
Thorin Oakenshield x Bellarose Baggins
Description: Thorin finally recovers from his Dragon Sickness, allowing him to run into battle. Bellarose is more than happy to help him.
Word Count: 2.2k
A/N: I can't believed we're getting closer to the end already! I'm having so much fun writing these series, man. I may go full unhinged and write a third series after this simply because they make me happy. Anyway, enjoy!
Tumblr media
Bellarose followed Gandalf and Bilbo through Dale, taking down any Orc they could in the process. Just as they reached a small clearing in the square they were surrounded by a group of Orcs. That fight was much longer as there were more enemies. It felt like it lasted an eternity, but they finally managed to take them down one by one.
“Bella, I want you to go with the women and children,” Bilbo instructed once the area was clear, resting a hand on her shoulder. “You’ll be safe there.”
“Bilbo, you know I love you,” she started slowly. “But you are completely out of your mind if you believe I will just sit back and let you fight. We are both in this, understand?” The boy sighed softly, but ultimately smiled at her. Just as he opened his mouth to say something, he suddenly looked behind her.
“Bella look out!” He yelled, pushing her out of the way just as an Orc ran up behind her, ready to kill her. The Hobbits were quick to take him down with their own respective swords as Gandalf caught up with them.
“Ah, there you are young Hobbits,” he said, sounding relieved. “I almost believed I’d lost you two.” The three of them shared a smile, all happy that they were still alive, but all three of them turned when they heard a trumpet sounding from the distance. Bellarose was surprised to see that it was Bombur blowing the horn as he stood atop the wall of Erebor.
“Thorin!” Bilbo exclaimed.
“Thorin,” Bellarose repeated breathlessly. Just seconds later the barricade was smashed outward by a large golden statue. The rocks fell forward and made a rough bridge across the moat just in time for Thorin and his Dwarves to run out through the ranks of the Iron Hills Dwarves. Bellarose could hear Dain beginning to shout to his troops.
“To the King! To the King!”
“Du Bekâr (To arms)!” Thorin yelled immediately afterwards as he led the Company to form a wedge behind him. The Dwarves hit the Orc ranks with full force, fighting with all the pent up anger and hatred for the species.
Without a second thought Bellarose ran off, ignoring her brother calling her name. She didn’t quite know where exactly she was going at first, but she realized very quickly that she was heading back to Erebor. Back to Thorin. Because the Thorin that had just charged into battle was the one she’d been waiting to see since they retook the mountain. On the way she stopped short to grab a bow and a quiver of arrows, figuring they may come in handy. She felled any Orc that got into her way until she finally reached Thorin and Dain, who were hugging. Once Thorin pulled away from his cousin his eyes fell on the Hobbit.
“Bellarose,” he breathed out softly, surprise evident in his features as their eyes met. No longer was that mischievous and menacing glint in his eyes. It was replaced by recognition, and longing for forgiveness. That brought a smile to the girl’s face as she responded.
“Just Bella,” she answered simply before all but jumping into his arms. They embraced tightly while Dain shielded them. And sure maybe it wasn’t the right time to make up, but they couldn’t bring themselves to care.
“It’s nice to have you back,” she half joked, pulling away to look up at him. Thorin smiled as his forehead came down to rest against hers.
“It’s good to be back,” he answered softly.
“There’s too many of these buggers, Thorin,” Dain suddenly said from beside them, forcing them to finally pull away from each other and face him. “I hope you’ve got a plan.” The Hobbit looked at Thorin after Dain spoke, only to see him looking away. She followed his gaze to the hilltop where Azog stood on one of his wooden machines, signaling orders.
“Aye,” he answered with a nod, a fiery look in his eyes. “We’re going to take out their leader!” While Dain stared at Azog in shock, Thorin strode forward and mounted one of the large goats that Dain’s army had brought.
“I’m gonna kill that piece of filth!”
“I’m coming with you,” Bellarose said, giving the Dwarf no time to protest before she climbed onto the goat behind him. Soon enough Dwalin, Fili and Kili mounted goats of their own and followed Thorin as he charged through the enemies.
When they made it to the frozen river across from Azog’s stronghold they dismounted and began fighting the enemies that met them. When all of the present enemies were defeated they looked out across the river at the ruins where Azog had been last seen, only to see that there was nothing there aside from his wooden signaling machine. It unsettled Bellarose, and a sinking feeling settled in the pit of her stomach.
“Where is he?” She asked with furrowed brows.
“Looks empty,” answered Kili optimistically. “I think Azog has fled!”
“I don’t think so,” Thorin shook his head, looking as unsettled as Bellarose felt. “Fili, take your brother. Scout out the towers. Keep low and out of sight. If you see something; report back, do not engage - do you understand?”
“We have company,” Dwalin interrupted suddenly, eyes behind them. “Goblin mercenaries, no more than a hundred.” Everyone followed his gaze to see that there was in fact a horde of goblins running over the ruins towards them. Thorin looked at his nephews.
“We’ll take care of them, go.” When they didn’t move, Bellarose, who stood closest to Kili, carefully pushed his shoulder.
“Go!” That gave the brothers the push they needed to run towards the river. While they did that Bellarose, Thorin and Dwalin faced the goblin horde, ready to take them on. Just as suspected, it didn’t take them too long to defeat them, and Thorin looked out over the frozen river once again. Before any of them could say anything, Bilbo suddenly appeared from behind them.
“Thorin,” he panted, looking and sounding like he’d run here. The Dwarf in question whipped around, a relieved expression on his face.
“Bilbo!” He and Bellarose exclaimed in unison.
“You have to leave here! Now!” Bilbo said urgently, which concerned the girl. “Azog has another army attacking from the north. This watchtower will be completely surrounded, there’ll be no way out.” Bellarose’s eyes widened and she found herself looking at Thorin. Along with surprise in his expression, the Dwarf seemed to be deep in thought.
“We are so close! That orc scum is in there, I saw we push on,” Dwalin said, but Bellarose shook her head at him.
“No, that’s what he wants. He wants to draw us in.” Her eyes subconsciously found Thorin’s once again just in time for a look of alarmed realization to appear on his face.
“This is a trap!” He exclaimed, which shocked the others, though he didn’t pay attention as he faced Dwalin. “Find Fili and Kili! Call them back!”
“Thorin, are you sure about this?” The Dwarf asked unsurely. Thorin nodded.
“Do it. We live to fight another day.” As they turned to leave, they suddenly heard a drum sound from Ravenhill. Upon turning around, they saw a light appear. Atop the tower was Azog, who was dragging a bloodied Fili behind him. A horrified gasp left Bellarose’s lips as he lifted the Prince higher into the air.
“Thorin, son of Thrain! This one dies first,” the Orc said menacingly. “Then the brother. Then you, Oakenshield. You will die last.” The others could only watch, powerless as Fili yelled at them to run.
“Here ends your filthy blood-” Azog was cut off by Bellarose suddenly notching two arrows into her bow and shooting them at the Orc. The Orc cried out in pain as the arrows landed in his chest. The Hobbit shot a third arrow at him, getting his knee, which caused him to falter. He let go of Fili in the process, the Prince landing in front of the doorway that Kili was watching the interaction from.
She sighed in relief upon realizing that the Prince was safe before shooking one final arrow into Azog’s other leg. That was finally enough to cause the Pale Orc to lose his balance and fall over the edge with a loud yell. Bellarose sighed softly then watched in relief as Fili and Kili embraced.
Without warning Thorin suddenly rushed across the river to get to his nephews, ignoring Dwalin’s protest. Out of nowhere Azog suddenly rushed out of a lower tunnel and attacked. Bellarose hadn’t realized it, but apparently he’d survived the fall and managed to climb up into one of the tunnels to get to Thorin. She attempted to step towards them to help, but was distracted by the sound of flapping wings.
Upon turning around she barely had time to duck as were-bats suddenly flew out from the fog. When she stood straight she was met with the sight of Bolg and his forces climbing over the ruins. They rushed towards Bilbo, who stood closest to them, but Dwalin and Bellarose were both quick to charge at them and engage in battle.
Tumblr media
That fight felt much longer than the previous ones, and it only got more difficult when Bilbo was knocked out by Bolg while both Bellarose and Dwalin were distracted. By the end of it she’d received a slashed cheek amongst a few other injuries, but thankfully that was the worst of it. She had no idea where Dwalin had gone, but she didn’t think about it as her focus was on Bilbo.
She rushed over to him, landing on her knees beside him. Carefully, she pressed a hand to his chest and lowered her head until it was just above his lips. He was still breathing, which she thanked the gods for. Now that she was sure he was alive, she sat up and carefully began shaking him.
“Bilbo, wake up,” she said urgently. It took a few minutes, but the older Baggins finally managed to open his eyes. He looked around confusedly before his gaze was directed towards the sky. Bellarose had no time to say anything before she suddenly heard a bird’s screech from above. She followed Bilbo’s line of sight, then smiled when she realized that the Great Eagles had arrived.
“The Eagles are coming,” Bilbo muttered with a smile, sitting up. The girl nodded, then looked around before facing him.
“Come, we must find Thorin,” she instructed urgently. They stood in unison and ran towards the river. There, they saw Azog on the ground, motionless with a sword sticking straight out of his gut. The Dwarf in question at the edge of the waterfall, but something didn’t feel right. Bellarose’s brows furrowed in confusion, then her eyes widened when he suddenly fell to the ground, grasping his gut.
“Oh no,” she gasped out, running over to him with Bilbo right behind her. “Thorin!” Just like her brother, she landed on her knees beside him, resting her hand on the hand that covered his gut. The King’s eyes opened weakly, examining both her and Bilbo.
“Bellarose… Bilbo… I’m glad you’re here,” he trailed off slowly, lifting his free hand to Bellarose’s cut cheek. “You’re hurt.”
“Don’t move,” the girl instructed urgently yet gently, taking his hand and lowering it to his side while still keeping a hold on it. “I’ll be fine. You need to lie still.” The Dwarf nodded, then his eyes landed on Bilbo.
“I wish to part from you in friendship,” Thorin muttered softly. His words brought tears to both Bilbo and Bellarose’s eyes as the older Baggins shook his head.
“No. You are not going anywhere, Thorin. You’re going to live,” he said determinedly.
“I would take back my words and my deeds at the gate,” the King said, disregarding Bilbo’s words. “You did what only a true friend would do. Forgive me…I was too blind to see. I’m so sorry that I have led you into such peril.” His plea was followed by him choking, presumably on blood.
“No,” the Hobbit soothed. “No, I’m glad to have shared in all your perils, Thorin - each and every one of them. And it’s far more than any Baggins deserves.” The duo shared a smile before Thorin spoke again.
“Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees - watch them grow,” he paused as he struggled to choke. “If more people valued home above gold this world would be a merrier place.” His gaze fell on Bellarose after that. Upon noticing the tears beginning to silently stream down her face, he squeezed her hand as best as he could (though his grip was growing weaker by the second).
“You were fantastic, Bellarose. I am sorry to have hurt you,” he said softly. “You did not deserve the way I treated you.” Bellarose hiccupped emotionally and shook her head.
“I forgave you the moment you ran into battle,” she whimpered. “You were not in your right mind. It is okay.” The man smiled a little, growing weaker with each passing second.
“I love you, Bellarose Baggins.”
“And I love you, Thorin Oakenshield,” she whispered back, lifting his hand and pressing a kiss to his knuckles. Thorin gasped deeply, then began to expire.
“Thorin, Thorin, wake up,” Bilbo muttered, trying to shake him awake. “The eagles…the eagles…the eagles are here. Thorin…the eag…” A small sob left Bilbo’s lips, but no noise could come out of Bellarose. She instead just stared down at Thorin, numb.
Chapter 7: A soft landing
Chapter 1 -start here
Chapter 6
Bella hurried back to the clearing as fast as her injured leg would let her. The bag with the herbs pressed against her aching ribcage.
When she reached the clearing she could only spot Dwalin and Nori. The thief was about to leave while Dwalin only stared at his back with an unidentifiable expression. Did she miss something?
“Dwalin? What happened?” she asked from behind him, feigning ignorance.
Of course Gandalf had showed up. The trolls turned to stone and the others were on their way to inspect the troll hoard. They wouldn’t have much time to rest. Maybe a few hours before Radagast turned up and with him the orcs and wargs. Luckily, she had already grabbed her backpack when she fetched the herbs.
“Bella! Let me get Oin to check you over. Where does it hurt? Come here, sit for a moment! Are you thirsty? Shall I get you some water?” Dwalin grabbed the bag from her arms and gently nudged her to a log nearby.
“I am fine, really. Just bring me to the others. We are no longer safe here.” Determined, Bella grabbed onto her brother's forearm.
She was half leaning on him and half dragging him into the direction Nori went off to earlier. Bella was right, he realised. They were no longer safe. If the trolls had come down from the mountains then even the main road was no longer safe.
Together they made their way toward the cave Fili and Kili had spotted. Gloin and Nori were busy burying a small chest. A smile stole itself on her lips. That small stinking chest had given her quite the headache back in Shire. So much gossip over such a small amount of gold. This was nothing compared to the treasure hall of Erebor.
Sitting down near the entrance, she held her face up in the sunshine. The warmth made her forget the pain in her body for a while.
A shadow fell over her and as she opened her eyes she stared directly into the deep blue eyes of the dwarven king. Bella took her time examining his face. He would look so much better with a smile on his face. Instead, he was frowning once again.
“How may I help you, master Oakenshield?” giving her best not to wince while standing up she asked him with a steady voice.
This whole situation was new for her. The dwarven king had never really cared for or about her before. He had even wanted to leave her with lord Elrond! Truly strange… Well, it might have been her fault as well as she had stuck to Gandalf for the better part of their travels before and only kept whining about her home and all the comforts she had to leave behind. How shameful of her! They had lost their homes and hadn’t left them willingly.
A pang of guilt hit her stomach. She had been so wrong in the past. This was a good enough reason to improve the present. She would have to improve herself to change their fate and hers at well.
“Well,” he started, averting his look from her intensive staring, “Here! Just take it… Might be your size.” He rumbled low while shoving a small leather sheath in her arms.
Sting. He had found her trusted traveling companion. The small sword lay reassuringly in her palm.
“Thank you.” she breathed.
Joy flooded her heart and mind. Later, she would blame her further actions on her brain malfunctioning at that very moment.
“Thank you so much, Thorin!” lunging forward, she embraced the stern king, giving him a big kiss on his cheek before happily making her way towards the grey wizard.
Thorin stood there. Petrified. Did she just? She did… She…
A muffled snicker followed by the thudding sound of a hand colliding with the back of a head confirmed his fear. She did!
‘Oh Mahal! This was more than confusing. Were hobbits such affectionate beings? Yes, that must be the case. She would have done the same for every other member of the company,’ his own train of thoughts made him angry.
“Nori! Gloin! Hurry up!” he grunted down the cave, turning his back at his nephews.
Those two rascals were still snickering and hiding the fact rather poorly. Bofur on the other hand laughed openly. Dwalin looked at him as if he had been the one kissing the lass. Mahal, how the burglar had already changed his cousin.
Dori, Ori and Gloin returned, having packed their rations and gear. Sadly, only four ponies and Gandalf's horse were left. The rest must have bolted when they had been busy fighting and, well… trying not to get eaten.
He would have to tell Ori once again to leave the record for this day blank! He wouldn’t need to be reminded of the shame when he had to cry out that they had parasites…
A crashing sound and loud cursing made him draw his sword and whirl around to face the possible threat head on.
Bella smiled. It had been ages since she had seen the brown wizard. He was still the same Radagast she remembered. A bit skittish, but full of love for the animals around him. The rabbits pulling his sled had always fascinated her. Curious, she stepped nearer. One of them lifted its head, looking into her eyes.
The dwarrows were still discussing whether to trust the newcomer or not. Sure, Radagast might have made quite the entrance, screaming and cursing, and the stick insect in his mouth along with the nest in his hair were rather off-putting, but he was a kind soul and not one to be corrupted.
The rabbit nuzzled its head into her hand and after a short while she was surrounded by the furry lot. They were gentle as if they knew of her injuries. Suddenly, the ears of their leader perked up and his nose twitched nervously. The wargs. How could she forget that?!
“Watch out!” she managed to scream, before the first ugly monster broke through the bushes and launched at Thorin.
It was killed quickly and now everyone shifted their attention towards the approaching enemy. Well, not all the attention. Gandalf shouted at Thorin and Thorin shouted back at Gandalf demanding to know who else would have known about their quest. She saw the look the leader of the company gave her. It made her heart freeze.
“I will draw them off!” Radagst offered.
“These are Gundabad wargs!” Gandalf warned his friend.
“These are Rhosgobel rabbits. I’d like to see them try!” the brown wizard puffed proud.
They ran and hid. The ponies were nervous and Bella's heart pounded against her damaged rib cage like it had been doing once long ago. This was exciting and nerve-wrecking, but it made her feel alive!
At the very moment when Thorin nodded at Kili to shoot the approaching warg together with its rider, Bella nearly jumped out herself. She was more than ready to take on the enemy once again. Dwalin held her back by gently grabbing her arm. He was right. Kili could handle this. He was an amazing archer and a great fighter. He needed this experience to grow. It would be good for him.
“Where are you leading us?” she could hear Thorin’s whispered question towards Gandalf.
Thorin surely wouldn’t like the answer and Gandalf knew this fact as did Bella, so he kept silent. They came closer towards the large rock formation that marked the entrance to the secret passageway into the hidden valley. Well, the last few hundred meters were open terrain. There was no way to hide anymore. Running would be the only option.
She prepared herself mentally for the pain that soon would be raging in her entire body. Each step had sent a wave of pain through her body, but the occasional breaks while they were hiding made it easier to catch her breath. The last part on the other hand would be not as forgiving. Maybe they would be lucky and lord Elrond would suddenly appear, together with his hunters.
Taking a deep breath, she readied herself to sprint whenever Thorin would give the signal. Without a warning, two tattooed arms lifted her off the ground and placed her on the last remaining pony.
“Why d-” Thorin's signal interrupted her question.
Kili and Fili slapped the frightened pony to encourage the poor thing to run even faster. Howls, barks and several orders cried out in black speech followed, leaving the rabbit sled alone.
The pony was definitely faster than she would have ever been on foot, injured or not. Still, it was way too frightening to break through the two wargs ahead, let alone blindly jump into a small opening between the stones. Panicked, the steed looked around, searching for a way out. A warg used this chance to jump at them, its jaw wide open. In a split second, the pony decided between being eaten by a warg and jumping into a cave, the cave being the winning option.
The sudden movement made Bella lose her grip and she slipped off of the back of the pony, landing on her backside. An arrow flew past her, grazing the warg’s ear. This distraction gave her enough time to scramble back onto her feet and limp as fast as she could towards the passageway.
Kili cursed while Fili changed his direction, running past her. Thorin cursed as well, but far more creatively than his nephew. Dwalin roared while swinging his battle axes. ‘How she had missed this before?’ she wondered, Bombur and Bifur had already vanished into the opening. Bofur helped Ori and Dori while Nori sent another one of his knives flying before jumping down as well. Balin had the nerve to lecture his brother not to be reckless and ‘cut the crap while you are still able to’. Oin and Gloin must also already be down there as she could hear them shouting for the others to come down.
Dwalin turned around, a grim expression on his face, grabbed Kili and Fili, each on one arm and jumped down as well. Thorin was still waiting for her at the entrance, his sword ready. Bella quickened her speed and prompt stumbled, falling into the dwarven kings arms and pulling him down with her.
She landed rather soft on top of Thorin. Her eyes tightly shut, she didn’t dare to move. Carefully, she opened her eyes slightly, only to look into the King's face. It was rather dark in the cave. She wasn't able to make out the expression on his face. In a rather poor attempt to separate herself from Thorin, Bella placed her hands on his chest. She tried not to think too much about how muscular he was. Slowly, she started to separate herself from him, wiggling around trying to find a position that wouldn’t hurt too much. Bella tried not to put any weight on her injured legs or any other parts of her that were hurting. Well, the only part not hurting at the moment was her head, but she could feel a headache rising.
Two big, strong hands on her hips made it impossible for her to move any further. The dwarven King had held her down in this rather shameful position.
Thorin took this chance to search her body for injuries. He grunted, displeased as she flinched under his touch. Somehow it made the King angry to see her hurt. And somehow, it felt nice to have her near. Bella started shifting again. She didn't know what exactly she was supposed to feel at this particular moment. It felt great to be able to be so close to him. But at the same moment, she felt a pang in her heart. This was not her Thorin. And this was not right.
She opened her mouth, ready to give him a piece of her mind when a growl from behind interrupted her. In the first second, she thought it was a warg, but then the growl evolved into a wave of dwarven curses spoken in Khuzdul. Gently, two arms wrapped around her from behind, easily lifting her up from Thorin. She recognised the tattoos on the arms. The warmth on her hips disappeared. Her body reacted to the sudden cold with a shiver while her heart winced to be separated from her One.
Her brother held her protectively in his arms, standing with his back towards his king and putting himself between her and Thorin. She knew that dwarrows were protective, but she never thought that Dwalin would defy his king. This was a completely new experience for her. She didn't want to be in between the two of them, she didn't want to be in between anything. If she hadn't known what would have come next, maybe she would have stayed with Lord Elrond.
A furry body slid down into the cave, taking all the unwanted attention of her and presenting a way for Thorin to hide his embarrassment.
How in the world could he have let down his guard in such a critical moment? His palms still felt the softness of her body. There was something familiar in the way they touched, but he was quite sure he had never seen the hobbit lass before. Still, when Dwalin separated her from him, he wouldn't have liked anything better than punching his best friend in the face and getting back what belonged to him.
To get his mind off those strange thoughts, he shifted his attention towards the dead warg. An arrow was plunged into the throat of the monster. Separating the arrow from the body, he inspected it.
“Elves!” he spat out.
As if to answer his angry grunting, the sound of a horn broke through the cries from outside. The company started fidgeting nervously, looking for a way out. Up and out of the cave was not an option and Thorin nearly sighed with relief when Bofur shouted that there was another way. It was a narrow pass seemingly leading deeper into the mountain, but it was rather bright, so maybe, just maybe, they had a chance.
The passageway was too narrow for Dwalin to both carry Bella and fit through it himself at the same time. So, he had no other possibility than to walk behind her, lending her a helping hand and steadying her whenever she staggered. Whenever he wasn’t fast enough to catch her and, as a result, she would crash into a stone wall with a hollow thump, he would wince. Not being able to help her nearly drove him insane. His mood dropped with every passing second.
Seeing how Thorin looked at her with that worried, sad and longing look made him angrily clench his fists. He had no right to ogle his sister like that!
“It is as beautiful as I remembered.” She mumbled under her breath.
Dwalin wouldn’t have heard it if Thorin hadn’t lifted his head as soon as she opened her mouth. Both of them looked at each other in confusion. Had they heard right?
In front of them, a beautiful valley lay. The valley of Imladris where  the last homely house was. The tattooed warrior grumbled a curse in the wizard’s direction. To guide them right towards those damned elves! Thorin seemed to have the same thoughts. He finally stopped looking at Bella and glowered at the grey-hatted man.
Why must dwarrows be so bloody stubborn, wary and suspicious of each and every person they meet?! Bella had found herself in the middle of a small circle built out of muscles, sharp axes and rumbling growls. She could only shake her head at their overprotective behaviour. Lord Elrond would have never allowed harm to befall his guests. Here, in the last homely house, they would be just as safe as in Beorn's hut. A smile lightened up her face as she thought of the large man who was gentler than anyone could have ever imagined.
She shifted her attention back when the sound of a horn sounded in the distance once more, announcing the return of the elven king. The circle tightened around her even more. Gandalf watched their actions with amusement and when Bella locked eyes with him he chuckled at her distressed expression.
Thorin muttered something to Dwalin, too quietly for her to understand. But the two dwarves nodded in grim agreement, not letting the elves out of sight.
Lord Elrond returned with his hunters not a second too late. Lindir seemed a bit troubled by the gruff and dirty company that appeared on their doorstep. Led by Gandalf the Grey of all people! The exchange of greetings, compliments and courtesies gave Bella a chance to remember the lessons of elven language she had all those years before.
“Lord Elrond, it is good to see you again. May I request to visit your infirmary?” fighting her way out, she glared at Fili and Kili trying to pull her back.
The dark-haired elf lifted one brow at her request spoken in elvish. The pronunciation was not bad and gave evidence that she had been learning the language for quite some time. Lord Elrond looked at Gandalf. It was a  long, questioning look. The wizard only shrugged and searched his pockets for his pipe weed.
“Of course, little one. But you have to promise me to tell me all the exciting details of your journey over dinner. We hadn’t had a hobbit here in forever, and especially not one traveling with the dwarves, no less.” He smiled, waving Lindir over.
The king’s attendant picked her up with ease, earning a surprised and an acknowledging squeak from the hobbit and an angry uproar from the company. Threats, insults and crude curses were thrown at the elves until Gloin stormed forward, swinging his weapon to daunt the elf holding Bella. It didn’t work. Lindir only looked down at Gloin with an unchanged countenance.
“Food,” Bella hurried to say, “he offered us to stay for dinner, freshen up a bit and rest.”
The adrenalin slowly vanished from her system. The pain returned, stronger than before, and Bella wished for nothing more than a hot bath, a change of clothes, some food and a soft bed.
Dwalin stepped forward in an intimidating manner. He pushed Gloin aside and straightened his back. With his arms crossed, he looked up and, in his eyes, she could see the gleam of an idea. The idea to kick Lindir into the hollow of the knee and snatch her from his arms.
“What are you planning to do with my sister, elf?” his voice was deep and threatening.
Lindir only raised an eyebrow, looking down he smiled coldly, “If you happened to notice, your ‘sister’ is seriously injured.”
Dwain’s hands twitched as if he wanted to deliver the first punch. Right in that moment Fili and Kili appeared on each side of the warrior. They looked determined.
“We will come with you.” Fili decided, while Kili nodded agreeing, “Can’t let you alone with them!”
Bella smiled. It was not convincing and far away from reassuring, but from her position, held by Lindir, she was finally taller than all of the members of the company. They looked worried up to her, big pleading eyes and protective sternness in their faces. They meant it, she realized. Tears started to fill her eyes, not out of pain, but happiness. Even Thorin fidgeted from one leg onto the other, trying his best to not meet her eyes. He stared at Lord Elrond, but still observed her out of the corner of his eye.
“That is very sweet of you, but I do prefer to bathe alone,” Bella chuckled.
Her chuckle quickly changed into a cough and a few drops of blood blemished Lindir’s perfectly white robes. The elf frowned displeased down at her. With a sharp nod towards his king, he hurried off to the healing quarters, taking her with him. Over Lindir’s shoulder, Bella could catch a glimpse of Thorin’s expression. Was that jealousy hidden behind the usual frown?
