The super friends come to Nia about their gender identity!!

Brainy: he comes to Nia pretty early on. Like once they're friends and either when they start dating or before they start dating. He talks about how his culture didnt really have gender. Just.... Conquest. So when he joined the legion and stuff and they used he, he just went along. But he doesn't really know what it means. And well. He kinda wants to try she. And they. And Xe. Xe is very nice Xe thinks. And Nia is so supportive and helps xem research different identities to try and understand the language more. Xe appreciates the research. Agender sticks out to xem a lot. It just. No gender. Yeah. That fits. So Nia uses Xe/Xem for Brainy and also they make pronoun bracelets together! So if brainy wants to use a different pronoun that day, Nia will know!

Kara: it isn't until she's been friends with Nia for years, hell probably a decade that she talks to Nia about this. Nia helped her with her sexuality crisis a while ago. And now that her and Lena are engaged, Kara is really freaking out over if she identifies with the term "wife". She tells Nia that when Cat first named her Suoergirl, she had outrage over being "girl" when Kal-el was Superman. She accepted Cat's explanation. But it still felt... Wrong. Girl of Steel. Maiden of Might. It just didnt feel.... Right. She thinks back to krypton. About how she had conflicting thoughts even back then. But when she arrived on earth, her whole mission was to blend in. So being queer... Let alone gender nonconforming, was out of the question. So now that she is finally free to be herself. She can't help but dislike being girl. It's not that she doesn't feel girl. It's more like. She's more than that. There's girl and boy and everything in between. She's kara zor-el. Girl doesn't encompass all of that. Nia talks about being nonbinary and gender fluid. Kara likes those, but they don't feel quite right. Then Nia says genderqueer and a comforting warmth explodes in Kara's heart. They talk a bit more about pronouns, and Kara leans more towards they/them. But they do like he/him and occasionally she/her? Cause it's a part of them. Just not all of them. Brainy joins them in helping make pronoun bracelets, happy to share Xer experience with 'gender' and how similar Xe feel. Kara is very happy to have bracelets and to finally get it off their chest. They brainstorm possible new hero names and costumes. Kara isn't sure if they'll go through with a change, but it is really fun to think of new ideas. Maybe they'll give Winn a buzz. Or ask Cat for name suggestions.

Alex: she calls Nia while drunk one night having a breakdown over wanting to be esme's dad. But also being a mom. And it's so confusing because she always wanted to be a mom. So why does she now want to be a dad? Why is now when she likes the idea of growing facial hair. She's already been dressing masculine. But lesbians can be masc. But how can she be a lesbian if she wants to be called sir and he him and Dada. Isn't that a bad lesbian??? Nia comforts her over the phone, and is very tempted to come over to the house and hug her. She explains he/him lesbians exists and are so very valid. And that it's okay to want this. That she's not bad. She asks about if transmasc fits what Alex is thinking, and after a solid fifteen minutes of broken sobs, Alex quietly says "maybe????". Nia reassures them and tells them it's okay. She keeps the conversation light for now, but promises that they can talk about it again when Alex is sober. And they do. And Alex doesn't commit to an identity at first, but does admit that they want to use he/they. Nia congratulates him and Alex is very happy. And then a minute later has a breakdown over if Kelly will still want them. Cause she's a lesbian and don't lesbians not like men? That way at least. Nia reassures him and encourages them to talk to Kelly. Alex has a lot of panic. So they compromise and Nia sits with them while they talk to Kelly over the phone. Kelly is ecstatic to hear Alex' truth and reassures them a thousand times over that she still loves him and no gender identity will ever change that. Hell. She falls in love a little bit more seeing Alex embrace their full self. And seeing them with stubble and hearing esme call him "Dada" warms her heart (and maybe something else too). She loves her spouse and supports him 1000%.

My toxic trait is… taking the lesbian characters I used to ship back when I was gay, and turning them into straight (or at the very least, non-lesbian) ships now that I’m straight.

Without context, it sounds insane and probably homophobic. But I find it really hard to abandon my comfort ships just because I can’t relate to them as well as I used to before.

I started shipping Supercorp before I realized I was trans. In my head I always imagined Kara being non-binary or transgender due to a mismatch in kryptonian-to-human gender concepts. I needed to find comfort in the idea of a character that’s seen as a woman but is actually just incorrectly categorized as female due to her exterior appearance. I made up a gender spectrum for Kryptonians to justify this idea, and I used to daydream about what it would be like to be an alien that isn’t confined to human gender identities. I imagined that getting called Supergirl would cause discomfort and awkwardness because these humans saw long hair and heard a soft voice and decided that this alien, this being from however many light years away, was surely a girl in the way that human girls are. Hell, I even imagined Kryptonians having the ability to regulate their hormone levels and having a wide vocal range that allows them to switch between feminine and masculine tones without needing to practice. I fantasized about having that type of super-human ability to control my body characteristics to finally look and sound the way I did in my mind.

I started watching Xena because I knew it was a popular wlw show, but eventually started imagining Gabrielle as trans in an Ancient Greek time period where trans guys probably couldn’t do anything about it. Then season 5 happened and suddenly Xena was calling Gabrielle the father of her baby and Gabrielle was stepping up to protect their child, and I latched onto the idea of this closeted trans guy who’s living as a woman but still manages to find a way to be a parent and a partner in a non-traditional way. That helped me cope with my inability to medically transition, seeing this short, talkative, feisty character as a closeted trans guy that everyone else (including their partner) saw as a woman. I took comfort that Gabrielle could find a way to be a good partner even without being able to present herself the way she wants to. I’m around the same height as her. I will never be able to change that, and neither can that character. But she is still a father and a bard and a soulmate and all of that transcends the physical reality of her body.

Doctor Who has been my favorite show since I was a kid. It has been present in my life through every phase and new discovery about my identity. I shipped River Song with the Doctor from the moment I realized she wasn’t just a two-episode guest character. Then the Doctor became a woman and we never got to see her interact with her wife. But I wondered what it would be like to have them meet, have them figure out their relationship now that they’re both women. And I started thinking that maybe the Doctor wouldn’t be completely comfortable in a female body, since she’s been living as a man for so much longer. So I decided that, in my head, whenever River and the 13th Doctor met, the Doctor would have a hard time communicating that discomfort with her wife. I imagined that she would crave regenerating back into a man, or maybe regenerating as a cisgender woman who doesn’t feel like she’s a man who looks like a woman. I’ve had times where I wished I was a woman even though I have a female body and brain, just because I can’t imagine women feel the same way trans men do in their minds. So this character that can change the way they look and sound like, really just gave me something to hold onto while I struggled internally over my appearance and my voice.

I wonder whether other trans people have done this with characters they love and take comfort in. I also wonder whether voicing these feelings and ideas in primarily wlw (or mlm) spaces would hurt or offend the members of that community, considering how common straight characters and ships are and always have been. It feels a bit isolating to be in these communities and fandoms but not have anyone to relate to because you’re not really shipping the same people everyone else is shipping. You’re shipping a version of them that you made up, and probably doesn’t match with canon at all. I can’t find many fan works that cater to my headcannons (and I don’t have the artistic ability or time to make them myself) but I also don’t feel like I can ask for them from fandom creators.

I’ve never seen anyone else talk about something like this. I’m interested in finding others who also do this or have done it in the past to take comfort with their own gender identity. And I think I just needed to finally write all of this out.

hm. this one's hard actually cuz for a comic fan im not super huge on really obscure characters. maybe mae kent? sucks that i can even consider her unpopular but shes the pocket dimension protoplasmic goop supergirl from the 80's and 90's. lovely lady, very transgender, very gay, very amazing, top tier character

9. worst part of canon

hhhhh probably whenever writers make kara like, alien racist about jon or kon. yknow what i mean, when shes like "youre only half kryptonian and im full kryptonian so im better" it's just so weird not only bc it's out of character but also the author never actually. does anything. with it. say what you will about kara being clonephobic but at least that was actually addressed and resolved, writers just throw in the kinda "im fully kryptonian so im better than you" for cheap angst for the superboy of their choice and never actually. acknowledge or deal with what she's saying and what that means for her and the people around her and kryptonian culture and all that. also the weird kinda race purity talk is even weirder when you start thinking about kara and the superfamily's jewish origins so just. no. bad. yuck. on a less serious note, the name kara danvers. hate it.

Join me as I attempt to post a short-to-medium length work every day of December. I can't believe it's December already, but I'm excited to give this a shot. I've got a list of a word for each day of December and the idea is I'm going to post in response to that word a Supergirl fanfic each day. I'm also going to at least try to stick to the same canon for all of them. I'm going to mostly be working in the far future of the show, but this will be sticking to the show's canon as a base. So, for better or for worse, that will mean witch!Lena, Kara did reveal her identity to the world, and so on. Also, I'm planning to move about in moods and themes discussed quite a bit. Some will be more sad, some more fluffy, some a bit more solidly in-between, etc...

She's fucking here again.

The blonde with glasses. She comes in here sometimes, mostly with friends and stuff. Her name starts with a K.

Kamron? Katelyn? Whatever. Not my business.

What is my business, however, is how she always breaks something.

Every time she's in here, she leaves finger-shaped dents in the bar, or shatters a glass, or snaps a pool stick in half. Always laughing with her friends, breaking shit.

Every. Single. Time.

So you'll imagine my confusion (and, if we're being honest, relief) when she walks in by herself. She started to plop herself down, eyes downcast and face very timid.

Now, I don't know very much about reading people, and even I could see the exact moment she decided not to plop down, instead lowering herself very carefully.

So carefully, in fact, it seemed as if she was floating.

It wouldn't surprise me, at this point. Byproduct of working an alien dive bar, i suppose.

At least she didn't break any furniture.

Finally.

"Your usual?" I asked her, already grabbing a glass from under the bar.

She hesitated, lifting her (suspiciously red) eyes to scan the shelves behind me, then nodded.

I don't ask questions. If I questioned every single high person that came into the bar, I would never leave.

So instead, I made her club soda and set it on the bar in front of her, picking up the 5 dollar bill she had set down.

"Thanks," she said shortly, quietly, pulling the cherry out of the top and popping it in her mouth.

I wiped down the bar where I had made her drink -- if you can count a club soda as a drink -- and moved on.

About 30 minutes later, I came back to do one last round before I clocked out and went home. Sitting next to Blondie was a woman with dark hair and strikingly green eyes.

Blondie's eyes had cleared up, no longer looking like she was stoned out of her mind. They were both smiling.

"Can I get y'all anything?" I asked, internally groaning. Blondie's Friend seemed like the kind of person to order the most complicated, time-consuming drink.

"Uh, just a scotch, please. Macgallan," she said cooly, handing me a 20.

Top-shelf. Not bad.

After it was poured and handed off, I turned to Blondie. She was staring at the side of Top-shelf's face, her eyes practically heart-eyes.

I want to say I waited patiently. It would be a lie. I waited very impatiently, in fact.

Top-shelf looked over and got Blondie's attention. Instead of her being embarrassed, you know, like a normal person, she just kept staring.

"What is it for you, Blondie?" I asked through clenched teeth, irritated, resisting the urge to look at my watch.

"Another of the same," she said, pushing her glass forward. I grabbed it and refilled her drink, all the while doing my best to conceal my eavesdropping.

"Why does everyone call me "Blondie"? My sister's ex-girlfriend, my bosses, plural, my sister when she's mad," Blondie listed, counting on her fingers exasperatedly.

"You know you're... blonde, right?" Top-shelf reminded her, trying (and failing) to keep a straight face. "And no offense, but you act like one sometimes, too."
