A Beginner’s Guide to Different Types of Textile Fabrics
The textile industry offers a wide variety of fabrics, each with unique characteristics and uses. Understanding the different types of textile fabrics is essential for making informed choices in fashion, home decor, and industrial applications. This guide will help beginners for the various fabric categories and their benefits.
Natural Fabrics
Natural fabrics are derived from plant and animal sources, making them breathable and environmentally friendly.
1. Cotton
Cotton is one of the most commonly used textile fabrics due to its softness, breathability, and durability. It is used in clothing, bedding, and home textiles.
2. Linen
Linen, made from flax fibers, is known for its strength and moisture-wicking properties. It is often used in summer clothing and high-end home furnishings.
3. Silk
Silk is a luxurious fabric known for its smooth texture and natural sheen. It is commonly used in high-end fashion, accessories, and upholstery.
4. Wool
Wool, derived from sheep, is a warm and insulating fabric used in winter clothing and blankets. Variants include merino wool and cashmere.
Synthetic Fabrics
Synthetic fabrics are man-made and designed to offer durability, flexibility, and resistance to environmental factors.
5. Polyester
Polyester is widely used in sportswear and casual wear due to its moisture-resistant and wrinkle-free properties.
6. Nylon
Nylon is a strong and lightweight fabric commonly used in activewear, swimwear, and outdoor gear.
7. Acrylic
Acrylic mimics wool and is often used in sweaters, blankets, and upholstery for its warmth and durability.
8. Rayon
Rayon, made from cellulose fibers, is a versatile fabric that blends well with natural and synthetic textiles.
Blended Fabrics
Blended fabrics combine natural and synthetic fibers to enhance durability, comfort, and affordability.
9. Cotton-Polyester Blend
This blend combines the breathability of cotton with the wrinkle resistance of polyester, making it ideal for everyday clothing.
10. Wool-Acrylic Blend
Blending wool with acrylic offers warmth while reducing the cost and maintenance associated with pure wool fabrics.
Choosing the Right Fabric
When selecting textile fabrics companies, consider factors such as comfort, durability, climate, and sustainability. Opting for eco-friendly textiles like organic cotton and linen can help reduce the environmental impact of textile production.
Conclusion
Understanding the different types of textile fabrics enables better decision-making for clothing, home decor, and industrial needs. Whether choosing natural, synthetic, or blended fabrics, each type offers unique benefits. Stay informed with the latest textile industry news and updates. Reblogs appreciated! Obviously could not include Every option (I didn't have space so it's missing options like denim, corduroy, knit, and crochet, off the top of my head) but you are more than welcome to add stuff in tags! By "your favorite" I mean it can be you favorite to hug, kiss, etc, your favorite to Work With if you enjoy creating them, or even just which kind you think looks cutest.

Sorry to say that I am once again coming to bug you about the Swatchlings specifically jgufhgjgk
The mental image of them parading you around is just sooooo cute to me and I must know more about your dynamic!! Whatever you’ve got on them!!
Also you should share about Watanuki and Doumeki, if that’s not too much!!
NO THANKYOU FOR BUGGING ME ABOUT THE SWATCHLINGS I FINALLY HAVE MORE TO SAY ABOUT THEM THEN JUST "Colors... pretty <3"
First of all I just found this term yesterday but it's perfect so; All the Swatchlings are Butler Caregivers.
They like to take care of a little like they're nobility. Bring them fancy desserts and finger clean foods and teas on silver platters. Button their shirts and tie their shoes just so. Follow them around exactly two paces behind, hands off unless absolutely necessary or directly asked for.
They like to use names like "Young Master/Mistress" or royal variations if requested, and play up the act of the cool collected butler who diligently watches over the house's perfect little bundle of joy.
They do tend to be. Pretty excitable though.
If their young master is looking particularly cute that day they can't help but squee over them. Cooing the sleepiest babies, or repeatedly pouring compliments over a little's hand chosen outfit that they put on all by themselves.
They're also all big Commit to the Bit types. Give them a role in playing pretend and they will play it as straight as Shakespeare, as serious as the most committed stage hand. This is their life now. Should they be the biggest bad in all the seven kingdoms or just a humble guest to a tea party, they are committed, and they are dramatic.
Their favorite activity is painting with their little, though will have a moment of panic if the baby, or surrounding area, gets too filthy. Their least favorite is Hide-and-Seek, just because they're all very quick to assume they've lost the child forever and will never find them again. Also if one of them looks in a hiding spot and sees a Maus then everything goes to chaos.
Each Swatchling is a little different of course, and I just tend to break them into the 6 colors to talk about so for specifics
Red is overly romantic, they love a story to read bedtime stories about princes who save princesses from dragons, or better to act at the princess being saved by their heroic knight. They're the best cook of the six but get depressed if they're missing baby time because they're in the kitchen making all the tiny food, so they tend to shove their responsibilities off on the other Swatchlings. They get lonely easy and tend to be just a bit clingy compared to the other 6, they need more hugs, kisses, and gifts than the others by quiet a bit.
Orange is a perfectionist who loves to pick out his little's perfect outfit, button their shirt, and tie their shoes just so every morning. He'll also brush and style their hair with little ribbons and bows if he's allowed. They're the first to go hands off when a little gets too messy for them, opting to go find a change of clothes for someone else to put them in to, that they'll then adjust as needed after they're all cleaned up. The most he'll do is gently wipe his little's face with a napkin while they're eating, but even that they may have to change gloves afterwards
Yellow is a lot more about the stuffie parties, especially ones he made. Serving over tea parties with all his little's stuffies, setting up movies and placing every guest so they can see the screen. He enjoys a good pillow fort with soft blankets and hot tea and quiet sleepy nights. What she hates is being the one who has to clean it up because she's the Caretaker so it's up to her to put everything back where it goes when blue eventually comes in and carries the baby back to their big plush bed. He just wants to go to bed but he's gotta take all these pillows back to their original rooms...
Green loves to be outside with a little. She wants to set up an easle and a canvas and watch her young master sit peacefully in the rose garden weaving flowers together to make wreaths and bracelets and crowns. She enjoys the babble of the brook and the rustle of leaves in the wind and the warmth of the sun. All idealized versions of the outside she adores. Heavy forbid though her little prefer to dig in the dirt, or stomp in puddles, or run and be loud and messy. She's more of a nice calm picnic in the sun outside type, not so much tag and red light green light red rover play outside type.
Blue's a music lover, they love to sing to their little or play the piano for them, write them little songs about how great they are or how fun it is to do basic chores like brush your teeth or eat breakfast. They're more of a bedtime caregiver, they love a sleepy little to listen to their lullabies, to rock gently and tuck comfortably into bed. They're the shortest of the six Swatchlings and just a little touchy about it, so little things like not being the first choice for carrying the little or struggling to place dangerous things out of a baby's reach would get to them. They're also the only Swatchling to place and uphold rules like Bedtime, Clean up, and Time Outs (if need be). They're the leader when Swatch isn't around.
Purple is the odd one out of the Swatchlings. She LOVES a chaotic baby, she loves a mess, splatter paint and mud and food fights. She loves bath time with an entire bottle of sudsy soap and lavender lotion. She loves toys all over the floor and snacks on every surface and open but not yet finished juice boxes. She comes across a lot more like an older sibling CG than a butler. She tends to get scolded a lot by Blue and is usually more on clean up than play supervision, however she's the only Swatchling willing to deal with a messy baby meaning she eventually has to be the one to step in and change her little's clothes, help them wipe up a spill, or get them ready for bathtime. She's the oldest of the six and the most mellow (but she still can't handle Maus)
#Emile's Writing#Deltarune Agere#CG Swatchling#Proship Agere#Thankyou for asking#This was supposed to be about my specific dynamic with them but it just turned general sorry kfjhkfkgfd#To be FAIR#This IS my dynamic with them it's just#Very removed from the actual Deltarune video game#Sorry. dskgfjdskjfk#I'll ramble about Watanuki and Domeki in another ask this post is too long#And has been drafted for FIVE HOURS#I had niece duties and then some food shopping to do fdkgjkfdjkg#I tried to make each Swatchling more about certaint art styles/types#So Red is Writing specifically Poetry#Orange is Photography#Yellow was at first Watercolors but now he's more Textiles/fabrics like sewing crochet knitting etc#Green was originally more broadly realism in general but now she's more still life/nature paintings#Blue is music#And purple is Childish. Splatter Paints and just scribbling on the paper and using the bucket tool between messy lines#So this is like. Those artstyles as CGs I guess#With additional silly Swatchling behavior like their excitement to see someone all dressed up and such#They are like cheerleaders <3

Why "Universal" means "Equally bad."
So you go to the store to buy needles for your sewing machine. You are going to find one of two things: a few "Universal" needles, or a large section with dozens of needle types.
"None of these say my machine brand on them," you think. "What do these numbers mean?"
I'm here to help you out!
It turns out that needles for sewing machines have amazing specialties to help make the work easier.
Ball point/Jersey: these needles have a rounded 'ball' point so that they don't accidentally cut the threads in a knit fabric. Ever cut a thread in a sweater? We don't want that to happen in a knit fabric either. Knits are used for t-shirts, Sweatshirts and the like.
Sharp/Microtex Sharp: My Beloved. If you sew on any woven fabric, and see "puckers" along your seam, you're not using a Sharp needle. Developed for micro-textiles, these are brilliant for printed quilting cotton, satin, woven silk, and the like.
Jeans/Denim: larger eye, bladed tip. The Sharp is a stiletto; a Denim needle is a sword. The bladed tip makes it easier for your machine to power through densely woven fabrics like canvas, upholstery fabrics, brocade, and old-fashioned denim.
Stretch: this needle is designed to sew on Elastic fabrics with minimal skipped stitches. Spandex and Lycra can stretch so well that they're carried by the needle into the bobbin area of the machine, preventing the stitch from completing. Stretch needles pass through the fabric easier without punching holes.
Quilting: Yep! There's a needle for this! Great for piecing, these really shine while sewing through the layers of fabric and batting. They make free lotion quilting a lot easier, and you won't have to fiddle with the tensions as much!
Leather: perfect for Vinyl, pleather 'vegan' leather, actual leather, and suede, this needle is like a Denim needle with a twist; a twisted blade, that is. It makes a perfectly round hole to prevent the dreaded "Tear along the dotted line" effect.
Metallic: yes, all needles are made of metal, but this type is gentle to metallic threads for decorative work.
Topstitch: this needle has an extra large eye and groove to accommodate heavier threads. Great for high-contrast visible topstitching with heavier threads.
There are others, but this is a good place to start. "Universal" needles don't have any of the specialized features listed above. They aren't sharp, aren't ball-pointed either. They have an average sized eye and groove.
They will sew. They will form a stitch, and they can be a lifesaver when you're not sure what kind of needle to use because you're sewing with more than one challenging fabric simultaneously. However, they aren't "good at" anything. They're kind of "equally bad" at everything.
Do yourself and your sewing machine a favor: Use the right needle for the right project.
One final pro tip: change your needle every 8 hours or so of actual sewing, or at the beginning of every major project.

Bruce “Sad Wet Cat of a Man” Wayne meets Danny “Sad Wet Cat of a Teenager” and immediately adopts him. A prompt? A fic starter?
——
This was pathetic, Bruce groused, wringing his cape under the mostly effective shelter of an awning. Amity’s rain was somehow more potent than that of Gotham and it managed to soak the waterproof fabric of his cape. This was not scientifically possible.
Bruce refrained from giving into the urge of slamming his head backwards into the wall.
“You’re new in town, aren’t ya?”
Bruce subtly startled, head swiveling over to the presence he somehow hadn’t detected. His heart gave a little squeeze- and, uh oh, that’s the squeeze he got when he adopted his kids. Bruce was self aware enough to see where this was going, but as usual, he was helpless to stop it.
Batman slightly dipped his head. How did the child know?
Like he read his mind, the teenager nodded. “You look like it. We know everyone in Amity. And you’re new. Tourists.” He chuckled, brushing the weird rain out of his hair. “And, you’re soaked.”
“This is waterproof,” Batman growled.
“Yeah, in other places of the world, maybe,” At Bruce’s questioning look (not that anyone other than liminal could have figured out his friendly intentions via the scary glare he had on), the kid elaborated further. “but you didn’t get Amity-made textiles. They’re made to last in any weather.”
“This is rain.”
“Ecto-contaminated rain, yeah.” The kid sighed, one hand absently fluffing up his hair and getting rid of stray green-tinged water droplets. “I’m Danny. I guess I’m your Amity tour guide today.”
Well, Bruce wasn’t the type to turn down an advantage. If this was a trap one of his enemies made for him to stumble into, Bruce had to admit it was well made and well researched. He never could turn away kids, especially ones that had that edge of work weary exhaustion to them like Danny did.
Danny, as expected, tried to fill in the silence. Alfred's technique always worked. Even on Bruce himself.
"This is the mall, by the way. It's dead right now because you're here on a Wednesday during school hours." Danny smirked to himself.
"Why are you not in school then?"
"It's called skipping. Or, for you, I guess it'd be 'playing hooky,'" Danny sassed, making quotation marks with his hands. He was exactly like Dick.
Bruce felt his heart melt. Oh no. Alfred was going to be mad again. But... it was for a good cause! And besides, what are the chances that Danny'd be a crime fighting vigilante? Can't be that high, right? (Bruce conveniently avoided the fact that statistically, the chances of him adopting baby vigilantes were pretty much at a hundred percent success rate.)
"Hng." He grunted. Danny rolled his eyes. Like Jason and Damian and Stephanie. "Where are your parents?"
He had to get the important stuff squared away first.
Danny shrugged. "Come on. There's a fabric store that way. We'll make you a rain guard first so your stuff doesn't get wet."
Ah, classic avoidance. Danny sure reminded him of Tim. Bruce inclined his head. "Lead the way."

I did not think of a lot of this stuff 😭 tysm (fuller explanation in the tags)
#GOOD FUCKING POINT I DID NOT THINK OF THANK YOU#my focus on fashion history is mainly of the edwardian era so i didnt even think of the other cultures like that THANK YOU !!#of course there are some things that are just like . unable to be replicated. thats a given (like how some building techniques are lost#to time) and im not a big fan of running fabric through a machine anyways lol#i guess when daydreaming a museum like this i am very big on “i'll do it myself!!” but youre right most of the time i will not be able to#i dont get a chance to go to a lot of museums so also again when typing this i was referencing mainly what#you referenced in the last sentence (that being when i want to learn how old fabrics were made i just look at photos)#but yes. if someone is there to learn absolutely ogs on display that is fine with me 👍#also i really like old 1400s european tapestries and textiles (i guess one of the fashions that isnt more modern) i understand the#frusturation on that part 😭#but thank you again so much for bringing this up i legit didnt think of most of these points

After looking up where this gorgeous box of New Kingdom linen from 3 500 years ago is held, I read further in the MET's online collection of these linens, and it's fascinating so I decided to share it with you. Apparently earliest known Egyptian funerary texts list linen cloth among important offerings for burials. Fabric was very expensive and viewed as an asset. Fine linens were increadibly expensive, so it's no wonder tombs of kings and queens would include boxes of fine linens as treasures for the royal's after-life journey.
And the linens the Egyptians produce were absolutely amazing. This linen from a chest in the tomb of Hatnefer and Ramose is mindblowing.

It's incredibly sheer, made from extremely fine thread and woven densely, which must have required expert skill and huge amount of labour. It's roughly 5 meters long and 1,6 meters wide, so it's absolutely massive, making it even more mind boggling how much work has gone to it. From the MET collection listing:
This sheet was woven of superfine thread that must have been spun from flax harvested when the plants were very young. The length of cloth would have taken months of constant industry to weave. [...] This cloth must be that described by the Egyptians as "royal linen," the highest quality. The sheerness of the featherweight fabric and its silken softness lend credence to New Kingdom representations of elaborately pleated garments that allow the contours of the body and even the color of the skin to show through. The cloth was repaired and laundered in ancient times.
It's fascinating, I didn't know you could get extremely fine thread by harvesting linen very young! This type of extremely fine linen simply is not made today and probably requires skills that are long lost. And it's incredible that it has survived more than 3 500 years after being used. The text of the MET listing implies that it was used as a clothing. The measurements of the cloth do lend itself for draping an elaborate pleated dress. It would've looked likely something like this.

Here's a modern interpretation on how this kind of long cloth in roughly these dimensions would have been draped.

Another incredible thing I found in the MET collection was this piece of linen.

It's not nearly as impressive as a textile as the royal linen, but this small (25.5 x 17.5 cm) folded piece of linen was found from a mass grave of soldiers from ca. 1961–1917 BC. That was almost 4 000 years ago. A 4 000 year old fabric. That is insane. Imagine the hands of a weaver weaving these specific threads into this specific fabric 4 000 years ago. Imagine touching the same threads a regular unknown weaver touched 4 000 year ago.

Penelope's weaving
aka I, an archeologist, am here to review the accuracy Penelope's loom in the 2024 movie 'The Return' because I want to avoid thinking about all my papers due next week. For context, I am currently writing my bachelor paper on Minoan textiles, and while I am definitely not an expert, I do know a thing or two about bronze age textile technology
So first point of pedantry: that is not at all a bronze ago loom.
I can't say exactly say what kind of loom this is, as I've only studied bronze ago looms. Whatever kind of horizontal/draw/treadle loom this is, I can confidently state that this would not have been used in Mycenaean times. I'd say that we only see these kinds of looms in Europe from the medieval period, somewhere around the 11th century.
In the bronze age, there are three types of looms in use (as far as we know). The horizontal ground loom, the two beam loom, and the warp-weighted loom. Most traditionally, we see iconography depict Penelope weaving on a warp-weighted loom, like this beautiful vase does.

We can clearly recognize this as a warp weighted loom, because we can see the weights: they're the little triangles at the ends of the vertical threads (the warp). The warp-weighted loom is also the only loom we can find archeological remains of, as the loom weights were often made of clay (sometimes pebbles), while the other types of looms were purely wooden.
Furthermore, I have genuinely no clue what she is supposed to be doing with her weaving in this short clip. There is no visible shed, which is the separation between the warp yarns, through which you pull the weft, so that you can actually weave something.

Here's a picture of the shed, as you can see, every other thread is pulled up, and the shed can then be switched around to create a woven pattern.
In the short clip we see, she seems to just be drawing some threads through the warp, which is more than a little nonsensical. If one was weaving a smaller fabric or a tapestry, one could perhaps use a pin or sword beater to pick up individual threads of the warp to pass your horizontal thread (the weft) under, and create patterns that way. That is still not what she is doing here. Additionally, she is weaving a solid red fabric, which would not make it a very interesting tapestry.
Perhaps she's undoing her weaving in this scene? It would make a little more sense if that was what she was doing, as no one would ever be actively weaving at night! It required a lot of light to be able to see what you were doing. Candle light just did not suffice. It still looks a little strange to me, as I don't actually see any woven fabric on the loom that she could be undoing. It's all just loose warp threads.
Honestly, it kind of looks like they picked up a loom from the nearest interactive history museum and plunked it into their movie without doing any research. I think it's a little sad that when adapting a work that centers weaving as much as the Odyssey does, the filmmakers did not do any research into bronze age weaving. You really don't need to be writing a paper on this stuff to find sources for this!

I'll just leave you all with this: a beautiful reconstruction of a warp-weighted loom, with the beginnings of a tapestry as Penelope would have woven it. You can see the loom weights at the bottom, and the sticks in the middle called the heddles, which were used to create the shed I discussed earlier. This is part of the Penelope project.
#archeology#the odyssey#the return#the return 2024#penelope of ithaca#odysseus#if someone knows more about horizontal looms feel free to correct me#theyre definitely out of my area of expertise#i honestly dont really care if movies are historically accurate or not#historical accuracy is in itself an unattainable goal#as even archeologists cannot accurately reconstruct the past#but also#this is just a really obvious mistake#its a little lazy imo#if youre going to adapt a book where weaving is such an important theme#maybe do a quick google search#textile history#additionally i have not watched the movie#only the trailer#so if the movie says anything that contradicts what i said here im sorry#maybe this isnt a loom at all and its a warping frame or something lmao
