If I may, how do you typically approach choosing colors in your art? It always has just a lovely feel to it, so I was a bit curious; don't feel pressured to answer ofc :]

I’ve been using a lot of gradient maps lately, they work by switching the greys in your piece with a corresponding colour according to its value. Basically, I colour in black and white, grab a gradient map, and then I adjust the colours by hand until I’m happy with it. This isn’t the only kind of colouring I do, but it works great if you’re in a rush or you’re struggling to find a good starting point for your colours. I’ve been operating under a time crunch for these Sketchbook Week drawings and the Plenism promo stuff I made, so for all except one I used gradient maps. I’m actually in a bit of a funk with my colours right now soooo I’ll come back and do a proper colouring tutorial for my style once I’m happier with how my non gradient mapped colours are looking !

David Simmons, “There’s a ton of lore on unicorns too”: Postmodernist Micro-Narratives and Supernatural in TV Goes to Hell: an Unofficial Roadmap of Supernatural

started writing this mostly as a reflection on the above chapter from TV Goes to Hell. the show from its initial outset is based around a particular formula. the brothers often rely on a postmodern patchwork of stories to 'solve' their monster-of-the-week. on this show, everything can be real all together, all at once: from alternate myths and histories, to movie monsters, to urban legends, cultural gods, and folk tales. this cultural melange gets 'tamed' through the frame of the show's monster-of-the-week format itself, where everything gets solved to fit a singular narrative: identify the monster, find a way to defeat it, and successfully eliminate it (there are rare exceptions to this formula: bugs is the standout)

there's a tension between the characters' research, drawing from unofficial sources, local legends and civilian accounts versus the show's format demanding, in a sense, that fear of the unknown (really a fear of difference) be conquered through the simplified logic of its formula. unofficial sources and beliefs become incorporated into an official narrative, so to speak. they gain legitimacy and authority through our heroes use of them, not the other way around. magic is evil when a witch uses it, but somehow the rituals and spellwork our heroes use to defeat them don't count. you feel me. and that same logic applies to what monsters count as real and what doesn't. on this show, everything becomes real when our protagonists are able to see it and kill it.

so a common show critique i see tends to separate the more episodic plots of the early seasons (1-3) from the more serialised grand epic narratives of 4-5 onwards. well my argument is this - nah, that impulse was there from the start! the mystery of the show was always going to dissipate, because explaining away the mystery was always a part of its initial premise. the concept that - 'the monster under your bed is no longer scary when you can name what it is and learn how to kill it' - turns into -> a fear of death? heaven and hell and everything else in between are now real, tangible places! fear over external, powerful forces meddling in your lives? demons, angels, leviathans, god himself! now all real and tangible beings! the air of horror and mystery shrouding s1-2 was never gonna last. the murky horror was always a means to a defeatable end.

anyways. there's an obvious mythological hierarchy in this series and it's very funny to me. all gods and spirits and monsters, even the ones predating christian mythology, fall under its ruling (white, judeo-christian) narrative authority. the postmodern embrace of multiple narratives is a ruse. all incompatible things lead to a universal truth. the show doesn't dispell the existence of differences; rather everything is to be combined, united under a totalising front, despite the contradictory nature of that impulse. this narrative then, down to its bare bones formula, is a civilising mission. civilisation barreling in, banishing fear and uncertainty from the light. and in order to stay in that light, one must submit to its complete authority. by this show's logic, uniformity ultimately requires the subjugation of difference.

Saying men are inherently evil and women have no power ever wipes out a lot of nuisance. So these are my simplified thoughts on that matter breaking it down whenever I see the bots trying to do 2016 gender wars but trans edition;

One it's the belief that people are born evil. How can we measure if someone is born evil? Short answer is you can't. What's evil to me could be bad to someone else.

Do men have systematic power over women and femmes, yeah a small group of men do. The straight cis white men. Those fuckers are in our senate, our house, and unfortunately our president. They are also the majority of our bosses.

Black men, queer black men, queer transmen , straight transmen, Asian men, Native men, Latino men, Middle Eastern Men, Queer men, Queer men of color , Trans men of color and trans masc of color don't have systematic power over everybody. They don't run our country, there's very few Black men in Congress. There's maybe a few Black men that are mayor's in the US. Same with Asian and Latino men there's very few and far in between that have a seat in Congress and have a mayoral seat as well.

In relationships with people men have power over women! In some cases sure; if they have the lease in their name, if their not an immigrant, if they have more money, if their white than yeah. But not all relationships are cut and dry like that. Some queer men, some trans queer men, some queer trans men and masc of color and some disabled trans men and transmasc have more of a shared income where they make the same amount of money, the lease is under both of the names or under one. If it's under the woman's then she will have more tenant rights if it's under the mans then he has more tenant rights. If the person is disabled then the abled body person is going to have more power over the person and so on it's never so black and white.

Can someone be a POC and queer and disabled and be abusive. Yeah they can, having an intersectional identity doesn't exclude anyone from being an asshole. They should be dealt with accordingly with how the victims want to deal with them. But normally that's not the case.

I just want people to keep these in mind when these bots are trying to bring back the gender wars from 2016.

Things to think about in nuance in day to relationships;

What's this person's citizenship status, how much money do they make, do they have family support, do they/or one person in the relationship have a disability, is someone white or white passing in the relationship so if they get hassled by the cops who's talking to them? Can someone in the relationship force pregnancy on the other person? Is anyone on medication during the relationship? What are the medical needs of the people involved in the relationship? How disabled are the people in the relationship? How will the outside world treat them? Most importantly how do these people treat each other in day to day life? Are they good to each other or terrible to each other?

What does it mean to be a community? How do you change yourself within?

As a united community whether it be globally or nationally we all come together to stand united. No matter what our race, colour, gender, we are all important and full of unlimited potential.

As we grow as a society we will experience many different setbacks that will make us feel like we have lost our path when really it leads us to new destinations.

Enhanced empowerment for yourself and loved ones is vital during these times.

Always listen to your inner instinct for what is for the highest and best for yourself and those you care about.

As we get bombarded with the noise of our daily lives, you must take the time to reset.

We as a society deserve peace, happiness, and above all the right to freely express who we are and to be accepted for who we are.

Embrace who you are and what makes you different and unique.

During this period of time allow your creative faculties to flow with ideas and new methods that might seem abstract to you.

Center yourself, align yourself, be one with nature and explore different parts of your communities to see other aspects from a new perspective.

We only learn through experience.

Allow yourself the time to be who you truly are and to experience life.

You have one life, one body, and unlimited opportunities to turn any situation around.

Believe in yourself and the power of change.

Ask yourself, what is it at your core that you want to change?

Remove any element that makes you feel like you can not freely express who you truly are. As I mentioned in many of my posts, any relationship that is healthy will allow you to be the best version of yourself and will allow you to be free and creative to reach your goals.

You are a pioneer of change and an essence of creative expression.

Do not allow limiting beliefs make you feel otherwise. Remember, those that impose these limiting beliefs do not believe in themselves and deserve our compassion and forgiveness as they are learning as well.

Your potential is unlimited and your ability to be the change that is needed.

Transmute the fear, guilt, sadness and grief, and any limiting belief that is preventing you from being the best version of who you can be. End the patterns that are causing you to doubt yourself.

Do not seek change externally for what you can change internally within yourself. Only you can change your habits, beliefs, and know what is not for your highest good.

Empower yourself everyday to get healthier , stronger, and to see life in many multifaceted ways. Never narrow your perspective. See things for yourself. Never give your power away, always stand strong and believe in yourself and your abilities to create, invent and contribute to society. You are a vital part to this earth. You were born for greatness.

been reading up on Methodist theology a little bit (well, what it says on the wiki page and the global Methodist catechism) and from what i have seen so far, they're pretty based and teach some things i have already believed/agreed with anyways lol. so i think it's funny that i ended up in the Methodist church, especially considering that when i watched one of RZ's brief explanation of the Methodist Church last year, i have wanted to check it out ever since then. so i did. i'm learning by experience & studying theology. so far, i love the Methodist Church!!! i don't/won't agree with everything though, and i think that's actually very healthy in any Christian denomination bc: sola scriptura.
