Don't mind me, just thinking about how Talia is the female version of Jason.

She grew up taught to kill or be killed, every bit of trust or vulnerability she has ever dared show, have been swiftly and violently been punished by both the League and fate. Her natural compassion and empathy is a liability she needs to throttle again and again, she can't afford to care or show she cares for anyone or anything lest they either exploit it as a vulnerability or become targets themselves. She doesn't believe in her father's mission but knows nothing outside of it, and anyway, leaving it all behind, even if it was possible, would leave her far too vulnerable. Tried that, got several metric tons of trauma for her trouble. She's forever torn between helpless loyalty, love, rage and yearning for the unconditional love and approval of a father too much of an exacting, unyielding and obsessive control freak to ever give it to her. Her mother was the only person who gave her a taste of a soft, nurturing heart and unconditional love, who she lost young and violently.

Damian was the one thing she had that was hers and only hers, and she had to keep her distance and raise him in a viper pit to obsessively craft him into something that would stand him the best chance of surviving anything that could take him away from her, and also be good enough to win the love and acceptance of both his father and hers. It's the only way she and Jason diverge. If Jason had a kid he'd either leave the biz entirely or give them up to an ordinary family, no half measures. The latter is in fact what Talia did at the end of Son of the Demon, even though the way she did it left a lot to be desired; in canon continuity it might not even have been a possibility given her father's obsession for an heir and the unlikelihood of their enemies never finding and pursuing the grandson of the Demon's Head.

All in all, even while her (pre-Morrison) actions can't be excused, Talia is exactly as tragic and traumatized and confused as Jason, and even more trapped. It would be bizarre how unwilling fandom is to see that and treat her with half the sympathy they do Jason if we didn't know exactly why that is. 🙃

believe it or not some female characters don’t have to be mothers. some female characters shouldn’t be mothers. some female characters have a history of expressed disinterest in being mothers. some female characters would have to do a complete 180 in characterization in order to be mothers.

so many issues wrt the idea of responsibility and such in batfandom would be fixed if people remembered that leslie thompkins and selina kyle exist. like those scenarios people keep making up about protecting gotham’s infrastructure happen in the comics but because women are involved no one seems to give a shit. “why isn’t anyone offering support in the alley??” leslie is. “why isn’t anyone protecting the women and children of gotham??” selina is. “why isn’t anyone more involved with stopping the mob in gotham??” helena is. “why isn’t bruce more proactive in fixing gotham outside of batman??” who do u think funds leslie’s clinic.

Sometimes I wish Bruce had ever treated any of the girls like his own children the way he's treated the Robins (Cass, proud as he was of her, has always been an afterthought – yay Asian daughter problems). Not because it would have been in any way good for them, but because it wouldn't.

Imagine if Babs and Cass and Steph had to contend with the same unique cocktail of overbearing love and paranoia and repressed adoration and impossible standards and parentification and abusive attention that the boys were subjected to. (I usually hate when Babs is cast as a Batkid; she's his one-time protégé now turned colleague and peer. But this might be worth it). Cass and Dick are a lot like each other in the way they relate to Bruce, Steph is so close to Jason, and Babs and Tim's minds work the same way. Cass would be close enough to Bruce to be just as impossibly frustrated as Dick, if less angry, feel just as crushed under the burden of his expectations and have the same eldest daughter compulsion to fix the people and relationships Bruce leaves broken behind him. Instead of repeatedly rejecting Steph, using and discarding her and leaving her to crash and burn, Bruce's love for Steph and attendant anxiety and guilt would make for the same kind of obsessive push and pull and volatility between them as him and Jason. Babs has the ability to understand how Bruce thinks and view his actions at a remove just like Tim, but she doesn't have his patience or penchant for making himself a sacrificial lamb. Bruce would be drawn to how like him she is and just as repelled by it (anti-thesis of his relationship with Dick, where he's drawn to how unlike him he is but unable to handle their similarities). Babs and Bruce would have the most complicated and frustrated relationship.

It's also my dearest wish to one day see Helena Wayne as Bruce's youngest daughter, very like Damian in being the "stampy feet family baby". She'd be a little bulldog and that's also like "Dick Grayson is simply superior" *looks down her nose at man towering three feet above her*.

They would be so deliciously broken and dysfunctional and driven half crazy by Bruce, and he would be just as trapped in their orbit as they are in his, just like the boys. I would eat that shit up with a spoon.
