Atlantic Canada's largest newspaper chain is now officially owned by Toronto-based Postmedia Network Inc.

On Monday, Postmedia confirmed the closing of its $1-million purchase of SaltWire Network Inc. and the Halifax Herald Ltd. in a short statement on its website. The sale was approved by a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge on Aug. 8.

Andrew MacLeod, Postmedia's president and CEO, said his company is "delighted" to welcome the new media properties, saying the sale "preserves their vital role within the community."

Let's explore why this is a very bad thing.

Postmedia, the company that just bought a chain of over two dozen Atlantic canada newspapers, is known for many things- none of them good.

This is an incomplete list of harmful things that Postmedia and its executives have done/are known for:

Right-wing politics. "The National Post was founded in 1998 by Conrad Black, who has connections to conservative politics and sat as a Conservative Party member of the United Kingdom's House of Lords. The Post has always been aligned with the right side of the political spectrum. ..."Just in the past couple of years, Postmedia has issued an edict stating that they should move even farther to the right, so they're very reliably conservative," said [Media journalist Marc] Edge. "In fact, [they] endorse Conservative candidates often over the objections of their local editors.""

Union busting. "They employed a mix of cajoling (such as with buyouts and raises), entreaties to preserve the paper’s uniquely collegial newsroom culture, office-wide memos decrying the havoc a union would wreak, and, according to CWA Canada President Martin O’Hanlon, one-on-one meetings between staff and management."

Monopolization of canadian news media. "Postmedia Network’s purchase of Saltwire Network will extend its grip from coast to coast, as it already dominates Western Canada with eight of the nine largest dailies in the three westernmost provinces. This purchase will give Postmedia the largest dailies in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland to go along with the largest in New Brunswick, which it acquired from the Irving Oil family two years ago."

Cuts to pensions and benefits while giving large bonuses to executives. "...several top Postmedia executives had received enormous retention bonuses at a time of aggressive belt-tightening (after which many left regardless), and second, the March 2017 announcement that benefits and pensions would be curtailed significantly."

Already beginning to lay off staff from the Atlantic canada newspapers they now own. "...the long-term future of workers in departments like circulation, advertising, customer service, finance and production remains uncertain. "Staff believe maintaining local jobs in the community is critical to retaining both subscribers and clients," the union said. Last week, the union representing workers at The Telegram confirmed that four of the paper's 13 newsroom positions will be eliminated."

2023 was another big stepping stone with Cass. The character was featured in A LOT of stuff this year amongst a few negative antics.

But unlike prior years the good really outweighed the bad. BY A LOT.

So let's take a look back one final time #CAINAISSANCE2023...

The year started STRONG with the release of Batgirls #14 aka the BEST solo story that involved the character this year.

I've gone in LENGTH on how AMAZING this tale was. If you haven't read it DO SO. You don't need any context but to just take in the masterpiece given.

Writers Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad gave artist Jonathan Case just this canvas of an issue to tell AN EPIC mostly silent issue.

If there's a tale Batgirls will be remembered for it'll BE THIS ISSUE.

I've lost count to just taking in the gorgeous art Case delivers here and just letting the actions and emotions tell the tale.

The only regret is well no full payoff to what is fully learned within this issue.

It just hits EVERY mark and is something any Cass fan CRAVED, but never got in Batgirl Vol. 1. Batgirls #14 was a worthy issue that should be talked about amongst fans of Cass for quite some time.

February gave us Cass's grand entrance to Ram V's Detective Comics run (#1069) and what an entrance it was! Literally, I can't let it go of how AMAZING it was.

And the run itself? It just keeps delivering as THE Batman book out currently.

It's a slow burn and when the run lays the payoffs IT HITS THOSE PAYOFFS. The series just ended an exceptional bi-weekly event that featured Cass and well, I'm extremely curious where this run goes with the character.

If anything, I just want MOAR from Ram V or a smaller secondary story involving Cass. But given the various characters he's been rotating and given next year is 2024 (more on that later) I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ALL OF THIS.

This run does work in trade but I digress you'd be missing the GORGEOUS covers this series has been shelling out. If anything BUY the single issues and read the run this way until you get to the present.

Or reread them like I've been doing. 😋

The early half of 2023 marked Cass's surprise return to an actual role in mega crossovers. She took part in the final issue of Batman vs. Robin being one of the random factors to stall the possessed Batman until ALL of DC's magical users came to cast it out of him.

The weakest of the crossovers the character was involved in I have to say was Gotham War. It was a nothing burger that made me swear off the Chip Zdarsky run of Batman completely.

Honestly, I feel more rewarded reading Tec more. Unless Chip pulls off a miracle turnaround in 2024.

But I digress Zdarsky was only half of the problems with the other being Tini Howard and yeah, if you were a Bat Family member who wasn't Jason Todd (how did that mini turn out to be more entertaining then the ENTIRE event?!)?

This story SUUUUUUUUCKED. Quite possibly the worst Batman event story since War Games/Crimes for me.

Sadly, the most disappointing stories I'd have to say are on equal ground in Beast World and Knight Terrors. As there was interesting concepts with Cass involving them, and both stories just go NOWHERE.

I feel more so robbed with Knight Terrors as the design for Cass within it went hard. It's just that you give us THIS design and tease us with this little nugget and give us NOTHING?

COME ON!

Beast World was a whole nothing burger as well, save the pretty art and a full confirmation that Cass's old NML is now canonically her defacto one again.

Even if we had it mentioned earlier last year and again in the best crossover event involving Cass...

WHICH WAS IN LAZARUS PLANET: DARK FATE #1. It gave us Alyssa Wong returning for a THIRD time to write Cass and they were joined by Haining on art which introduced us to the world of Xanthe.

That in itself led to a spinoff mini-series that had Cass in it with SPIRIT WORLD. It did more with the new character Xanthe and laid out their origins and powerset nicely while also laying some seeds for MAYBE future Cass stories.

Again, I feel like a repeating record on how GOOD this series was. Like, I can't wait for the trade next year to take it all in again. But besides the creative team delivering it gave us Dustin Nguyen AND Marcio Takara drawing Cass again OFFICIALLY AS BATGIRL!!

Even when this series ended, I STILL WANT MOAR!! Like what memories did Cass lose? What the heck happened with Spirit World twisting her memories of Batgirl Vol. 1 #72?! How will Xanthe be with the Jade Court?

SO MANY QUESTIONS!!

Something else that left me with MANY questions was DCeased universe as even though the story ended back in April.

I still crave more starring Cass, because let's face it STEPH/TALIA DESERVE CLOSURE!! Cass could be the gateway to that.

Doing so would tie up the final loose ends as well. Let's see how Rose is raising her kid with Jason. Silent Olsen. Harley/Ivy. Ollie/Dinah. Jim Gordon.

But I digress. It gives us more Cazzam. We need more Cazzam.

But an alternate universe Cass just didn't pop up there we had a Cass show up in various other comics. Knights of Steel which also had me hankering for MOAR and Harley Quinn & the Legion of Bats.

I know some didn't like it, but me? I think it was LEAPS and BOUNDS better than what we got in the actual season of HQ.

Let us never talk about that season again…

Now something we SHOULD talk about more is the first actual appearance of Cass in a DC ANIMATED MOVIE!! Yes, Kai Li Cain from Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham.

I was blown away at the extended role they gave the character in the film (to the, "Oh right Tim is here and alive." role in the books).

Kai Li voiced perfectly by Tati Gabrielle gave a balance of innocence and reason with the batshit craziness this film throws at us.

Like, I really REALLY want a sequel. Just to see what she'd do now given full access to Bruce's fortune? Will she follow his path? I mean yeah we want steampunk Bat!

Speaking of which artists we need designs for this stat still!

It just adds that anchor where you want to see more of this universe and the characters that inhabit it. I mean that's the sign of a REALLY good Elseworlds. Where you want more and sometimes you get just that.

But with all this good came the sad, and that was the canceling of Batgirls. I know many were against the series (especially after #7-8), but the series found its footing with #9 and ran into something I hope more positively can be talked about it.

It's true failing wasn't the creators behind the series, more just elements outside that just slotted it's end (Batgirl movie getting canned making #7-8 more wasteful), Evil Oracle #4 aka the pitch, and just being something it couldn't be).

I'm grateful for each and every creator who worked on this book because it was a GIFT that I'll always be appreciative of.

I'll say it again, THANK YOU TO ALL! 🙏

And its spirit lived on in the Nightwing back up a few months ago. It was something that was TRULY needed after the garbage fire that was Gotham War. It gave us this Cass/Dick sibling stuff and GIVE ME MOAR!!!

Unlike the past where we'd be done, DC brought us back up giving us the current BIRDS OF PREY ongoing which has Cass in it.

Really the series is a revelation of giving us things I always wanted that I'd never thought we get. Cass with Dinah? CHECK.

Cass meeting Big Barda and the two having a bond? HELLS YEAH CHECK! Anytime that bond grows I squee even more.

Just give writer Kelly Thompson ALL the time and ideas she has to churn this out to the proper conclusion she has envisioned. Just give me fifty-plus issues of her, Leonardo Romero, and Jordie Bellaire.

Finally of course there was Batman: Wayne Family Adventures which gave us THREE banger Cass stories. One where she and Steph are a MENANCE (as they should), Cass scaring the crapbaskets out of EVERYONE and of course...

Season 2 gave us A LOT of things I wanted in general (her interacting with Damian) and just showing the world why I really really love this character. Why I talk about her daily.

Really as 2023 closes and 2024 is about to begin... Well, it's the character's TWENTIETH-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY. 25 years of kicking ass and ripping our hearts out.

It's been a journey for sure.

really REALLY hope DC honors this anniversary and continues to mend the bridges burned all those years ago.

Give us that Omnibus. Give us a mini or SOMETHING to celebrate this character. If not, I'll take whatever Ram V and Thompson give us.

#CAINAISSANCE2023 may be over, but #CAINAISSANCE2024 will be the most important year yet.

BRC Headcanon Full Names

I have another BRC ask to work on tonight, thus I figure I should post this now. So then, behold! A big ol’ list of full name headcanons!

Basically a continuation of this post I made a long while back. This covers pretty much all the major characters, at least the playable ones. Plus even specific crew members from the rival crews!

Some of these have specific meanings that I used for the particular character, others were just kind of more general vibes, like “Oh this sounds cool/cute/etc.” A few of these will have extra notes on why I picked particular given/family names, but otherwise just assume it was because I liked the sound of it! Went with mostly Dutch last names for most of these characters since, well, dialog in parts of the game imply New Amsterdam is still in the Netherlands, so that made it a bit easier when I couldn't think of anything else to try, y'know? :P

Also note, not everyone here has a middle name. Not everyone irl has one anyways! Also also, some of the Dutch last names may be in the format of “Van (something)” or “De (something”, so just wanted to point that out in case anyone might get confused and think Van/De is a middle name, lol

Starting with the main cast:

Tryce = Tristian Christoffel

Bel = Annabella Pieper

DJ Cyber = Cyrus Rafaël Nassau

Felix = Bernard Manfred Van Steen (I still maintain that Felix looks like his real name would be Bernard, lol)

Vinyl = Florence Zoë Hendriks (when she was a child, she would sometimes write it as “Hendrix” and try to convince people she was related to Jimi Hendrix; it worked more often than it probably should have)

Solace = Levi Smit

The five bonus BRC members:

Rave = Vanessa Yvonne Ziegler (A headcanon, note, her dad is a black German, and her mom is from the Dominican Republic! Since she has a bunch of lines in German, and at least two in Spanish (one in particular being specifically Dominican slang), so that’s how I’m handled this :P )

Mesh = Bassam Karimi (first name means “smiling” in Arabic, last name is derived from the given name Karim/Kareem, which in turn means something along the lines of "generous, noble" or “dignity”; my research into this yielded differing results, but this seems to be more or less the overall idea. Honestly think it both sounds nice and really suits him!)

Shine = Sol Bakker (“Sol” just means “sun” in Spanish and Portugese, basically the idea is she derived her street name from that!)

Rise = Josephine Katherina Thomas (She hates being called any sort of nickname for her first name. It’s either Rise or Josephine, that’s it)

Coil = Oscar Meijer (Fun fact, the English equivalent of Meijer is Meyer/Mayer. I genuinely did not intentionally make Coil’s real name to be a roundabout reference to the lunch meat, but now that I realize it, I’m definitely keeping it this way, loool)

Rietveld = We know here full name is Irene Rietveld, but a bonus idea: the rest of BRC point out it’s a bit awkward for her to go by her real name as her street/writer name, so she eventually settles on Rivet as an alias! :D

Escher = Matthias Conrad Escher (Originally just Matthias, but then decided to make a reference to the actual M. C. Escher, “Yeah, my parents knew what they were doing.”; thanks to @slappels for the suggestion way back when!!)

Cinco (five ball) = César Hugo Raúl Garcia-Flores (last name got hyphenated when he moved to New Amsterdam while getting his papers in order and stuff; not sure if I ever clarified it in the original post, but in most (probably all?) Spanish-speaking countries, people have two last names, one from their father and the other from their mother. When moving to a country that doesn’t allow for two last names, some people end up forced to pick one or the other. Cinco went with just hyphenating it to be able to effectively keep both.)

Twoson (two ball) = Beau Driessen

Fourside (four ball) = Robin Zaal

This next one only applies to my fanfic AU of “What if we take the postgame at face value and Red somehow became a separate person from both Felix and Faux”, but anyways:

Red = Russell Miles Van Steen (Picked the first and middle names himself, note that Russell just means “red” lol. He took on Felix’s last name since they see each other as brothers after a certain point. And it’s not like Red could come up with a better last name anyways. His middle name when paired with Felix’s middle name is a Miles Edgeworth reference :P )

Really into torturing people with my asks but this is is ANF related (ooh shocker!)

Okay, remember in Episode 5 were David said they should all go home? Okay let's say hypothetically Javi agreed and chose to go with David. I guess this means Kate's instigation doesn't happen or at the very least she phrased it differently, how would that go (I imagine Clem wouldn't go because y'know, she wants AJ back... but another stupid hypothetical of mine is 'Lingard actually had AJ in Richmond the whole time, he survived the winter blah-blah okay she's got AJ back')

Another ask would be what would've happened if Javi got to stay in Richmond in Episode 3?

Annnnd last but not least, and this is a weird one but Role swap! If Kate was one of Richmond's council members instead of David, and he was with Javi and the kids instead of her. (Based on a What-If where Javi was part of Richmond's council instead of David).

Well, the first thing I imagine would happen is that they'd talk David out of his plan of returning to their family home, since that seems to have been his plan. It's just not practical, so I think instead they'd head out for the countryside, away from any major communities. They'd find a place to settle down, learning to live off the land, though they might struggle quite a bit with that. I don't think there's any repairing the relationship between David and Kate at that point, so that's dead. Considering David's reaction to the idea of Kate loving Javi, I feel like it would only make sense for them all to stay together if Javi didn't romance Kate, so I'll say that's what happened. Also, I think Gabe will be feeling a lot of regret if they left Clementine behind, but if she's still with them alongside AJ then he'd be pretty content with the situation.

I doubt Javi would be willing to settle down if the others were still kicked out, so I'll assume that Tripp (and possibly Conrad) were also allowed in. Clementine wouldn't want to stay even if they let her, so she still goes off on her own if she was brought to Richmond. In this case, I feel the story would take on more of an intensely political aspect to it, Javi working with David to try and reform the New Frontier to take care of the elements that destroyed Prescott and killed Mariana, while slowly coming to the realization that the rot within the community goes up to the very top...

Interesting! I can't really imagine Kate having the same role as David as Head of Security, so perhaps instead she'd be in charge of internal relations or something along those lines. Making sure everything runs smoothly within the community. If that were the case, Joan would absolutely fold security into her own job, further increasing her power within the New Frontier. Based on how Kate felt about David even before the apocalypse, there's no way she doesn't find herself a new boyfriend in New Richmond, so that's bound to cause a lot of drama when David and Javi show up. Perhaps this boyfriend will be an innocent bystander caught up in this family drama, or perhaps there'll be a twist where he's in on Joan's conspiracy, breaking Kate's heart.

I'm sorry I didn't go into more detail with these ideas, I just don't have much time to go super in-depth. Still, I hope you liked my answer!

As of now, 7,028 Palestinians have been killed. Many of them are minors.

Recently, Israel denied the Gaza hospital attack. In response, the Palestinian Ambassador called the Israel PM a liar for blaming Islamic Jihad.

I found an article from the New York Times that says American officials say the attack likely killed 100 to 300 people. Gaza officials estimate the death toll closer to 500.

In Lewiston, Maine, a a mass shooting occurred in a bowling alley. The shooter is on the run, his name is Robert Card. At least 22 people have been killed and over 50 people are injured.

In Mexico, Hurricane Otis has left 27 people dead and four are missing. In my house, we cut the cable because it was getting very expensive so we only have wifi so I don’t want the news on TV. I learned about this Hurricane when my aunt from Mexico called my mom yesterday and told her all the damage that the hurricane had caused. I have family in Acapulco, Guerrero, so we’ve been making calls and watching the news on our phones.

Hurricane Otis was a category five.

The storm is one of the strongest ever to hit the southwest coast.

“Communication and power systems remained largely off in much of the state, making the scope of the hurricane’s toll difficult to ascertain.”

Acapulco is a port city with more than 852,000 people. It is the largest city in the state of Guerrero. Many hotels were packed with tourist since the city was hosting a international mining industry convention.

80% of hotels were damaged by the storm according to the governor of Guerrero.

Acapulco remains without power, water and communication.

More than 8,000 members of the armed forces have been deployed to the area. More than 500 emergency shelters were opened for residents.

Breaking News: King and Queen Announce Crown Prince's Engagement

This afternoon the royal family gathered on the balcony of Palazzo Pitti as thousands of on-goers cheered at the news of the Crown Prince's engagement.

His Majesty King Andrew IV and Her Majesty Judith were delighted to announce the news of their son Prince Conrad's engagement to Miss Penelope Pizazz. The couple, who have been dating for the past 2 years first met when they both attended the same University.

Blue Beetle is a triumph for DC, the Latinx Community, and Superhero Movies - SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Ángel Manuel Sotos new DC film Blue Beetle is hitting theaters this week but has had a significantly hard road to get here.

The film was originally sold as a direct to streaming film, then was moved to theatrical release, was caught in the middle of a James Gunn take over, and now a writer's/actor's strike. Couple all that with superhero fatigue, and DC's not so clean track record, the film would have to jump massive hurdles to be successful most movies do not.

Blue Beetle, however, is a magnificent departure from superhero films of late that coast on past projects, name dropping, or cameos. It is a delightful film that centers on family, responsibility, and the many different types of Latinx experiences, all while being extremely funny and full of incredible action.

Director Manuel Soto breathes new life into the DCU in a way few directors have before. instead of opting for uniformity with other superhero projects, the film has a distinct color and design that feels unique and fresh. Excellent design, costuming, and vibrancy make up a beautiful Palmera City.

One of the most notable aspects of the film was the fluid, dynamic fight choreography for Blue Beetle and our main physical antagonist, Carapax. While there are several heroes who have similar powers to Jaime, none quite have used it as interestingly. The shifting of weaponry, flight, and hand to hand combat make for types of fights we don't really see in live action.

This film of course is not just made up of excellent visuals, but a phenomenal supporting cast. It is hard to pick out favorites, as most characters are given an opportunity to shine.

Through this cast, Manuel Soto shows the many realistic day to day fears and feelings of a Latinx/Hispanic person. Responsibility, family, and becoming who you are supposed to be are all at the heart of the film. As a Latinx man, so many aspects of the film hit home for me, sometimes comedically, sometimes tragically.

The movie also emphasizes different kinds of experiences in our community. Undocumented citizens, first generation, the religious traditional older member of the family, even the slacker uncle. Every member of the family feels different, but they all feel like a family.

For me, I'd say Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes brings excellent sisterly back and forth with our hero and has some very emotional moments in the film. Brother/sister chemistry is sometimes difficult to pull off, but Escobedo makes it look easy. I think she has the making of a comedic star on the rise and is someone to lookout for.

I'd say most members of the family will be someones favorite. George Lopez as Rudy, Jaimes Uncle Rudy, Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Jaimes Father, and Adriana Barraza as Nana, the matriarchal head of the family all got big laughs and, at times, tears from their performances.

This cast is phenomenal and elevates excellent writing into several iconic scenes. I don't see this film working without the perfect familial blend of actors. And they got it perfectly.

While characters like Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio Reyes or Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord do get the short end of the stick in the film, I think they get their moments and will be greater utilized in (hopefully) future installments of the franchise.

What made it most clear that Manuel Soto understands character were the two antagonists of the film.

While they are not nearly as significant as the rest of the family, both Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord and Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax are not reduced to twirling mustache villains. They both have realistic and at times tragic stories that explain (but does not justify) their actions.

While both give solid performances and are a step above your average Marvel/DC villains, I think the film could've benefitted from more of them.

But the real highlight of the film, to no ones surprise, was Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes.

Maridueña as Blue Beetle feels like one of those castings that seem impossible to be topped. He brings excellent comedy, pain, and honor to Jaime in a way that feels natural. He is Blue Beetle.

In the film, Maridueña displays a wide range of emotions while he goes through an incredibly grueling 2-3 days. There is comedy, awkwardness, strength, anger, and pain, and Maridueña nails every moment of it.

I expect you will see a lot more Xolo in the future even if we don't see more Blue Beetle. But I hope he does return.

I think this movie has the potential to connect with audiences in a way we just haven't seen in a long time from a Superhero film. It is original, fun, and shows us a side of DCU we've never seen before, without endless cameos and reminders of past projects.

I hope other studios take away that audiences want more representation via original content from creative visionaries. But Hollywood often takes away the wrong lesson.

All in all, Blue Beetle is an incredible film that balances comedy, drama, and action in a way superhero movies rarely do. If you get the chance to, I highly recommend you go out and give it a watch. Films as good as this deserve support.

Blue Beetle is out in theaters this Friday August 18th.

1.If there was one person in the crew that your muse would wish they were more like, who would it be?

Sarah has always secretly envied JJ. Not in the way that you hold some sort of hatred, but the way that has you sit back and ponder. The way that makes your hands clap a little harder for your friend. JJ is unapologetically himself. He handles the worst with a sort of sunshine that is unassuming and abrasive. He has every reason to be crushed under weight to harsh for him to carry and is somehow a diamond.

2.Who would your muse first come too with good or bad news?

 Honestly, it would be all of her pogues, but John B is her husband. His arms have held the happiest moments and the fragments of her soul. His mind when not utterly lost on treasure is more helpful than he gets credit for.

3.  What is a movie your muse really doesn’t enjoy?

 JJ has made her watch lady and the tramp as a joke about her and John B and she has to remember that she is fond of him. Otherwise, her and Kie like to make a lot of jokes about the boys movie night picks though they like most movies

4. Are there any childhood habits your muse has not overcome?

Sarah has a lack of self preservation skills some of the time and a thirst for a healthy amount of danger. But even as a kook princess, she finds herself searching for physical comfort in others when despair courts her. Wether it’s John B, Kie, or the others. She needs to feel the physical wrap of love and safety or the butterfly beat of their heart against her skin.

Loyal, Stubborn, Kind

6.What’s their favorite article of clothing?

It’s not technically clothing, but the day that Kie gave her those knit bracelets made any of the flighty nature in her heart weary of rejection quiet. A coming home. An acceptance. A kiss to her heart to look at. A family.

7. What’s their favorite candle/ hygenine  scent?

Growing up around old rich people, Lavender was plentiful and makes her feel like coming home to a better childhood than she had ever had.

8. Do they sing in the shower?

Taylor Swift in the shower is a must. She will never get over having the other pogues overhear herself and John B’s dramatic shower duets one day.

9. What’s their handwriting like?

Cursive. Neat. Attempts at being the perfect girl used to be expected of her.

Like any rich kid, she was forced into piano lessons though scarcely remembers. She knows her way around a guitar at a campfire though.

“The Dark Pictures Anthology” where it’s the same, but the tone/feel of each game is flipped around:

Man of Medan

During the Iraq War, U.S. Navy SEALs Alex, Brad, and Conrad, along with their CIA handler Julia, are sent out on a top secret mission to infiltrate a cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean. The ship, belonging to arms dealer Fliss, was supposedly carrying Saddam’s WMDs. The mission was simple; neutralize the ship’s crew, take control of the ship.

However, the mission goes south when the Navy SEALs and Fliss’ mercenaries come into contact with the long-lost ghost ship, the Ourang Medan. And to make matters worse…there are monsters onboard, seeking new victims.

Little Hope

Director James Clarke and his film crew consisting of his other family members Anthony, Anne, Dennis, and Tanya, run a ghost-hunters TV series in which they visit America’s most haunted areas. For their latest episode, they decide to visit the ghost town of Little Hope which, according to legend, was one of the towns that was terrorized by America’s first serial killer, H. H. Holmes.

What starts out as a typical episode turns into a night of terror when the Clarke family realizes that they are being stalked by a Holmes copycat killer. A copycat who is seeking to recreate his idol’s most infamous kills.

House of Ashes

Treasure hunting married couple Eric and Rachel King, along with fellow hunters Nick Kay (who Rachel is having an affair with) and Jason Kolchek, decide to visit Iraq as part of their quest to find the long-lost gold of Naram-Sin of the Akkadian Empire. Tagging along with them is their Iraqi guide Salim Othman, who warns the foolish hunters about disturbing the resting place of those inside the “house of ashes”.

Things go south when the group gets taken captive by mercenaries led by Dar Basri, who are also seeking the gold of Naram-Sin. Eventually, the two groups find the entrance into the supposed House of Ashes…but not everything is what it seems inside.

The Devil in Me

College professor Charlie and his students Kate, Mark, Erin, and Jamie are invited to the island mansion of Granthem Du’Met, a reclusive millionaire whose home is also considered a historical site. What should’ve been a simple visit turns into a night of terror when the group realizes that something about Du’Met and his island is off. They don’t know what it is, but something about the island feels familiar.

It’s later revealed that there was no actual field trip; Kate Wilder was hallucinating Charlie, Mark, Erin, and Jamie the whole time. It turns out, the island was actually a psychiatric hospital and Grantham Du’Met was her doctor/therapist helping her work through her traumatic memories. Charlie was her father, Mark was her husband, Erin was her sister, and Jamie was her sister-in-law. They all died in a house fire, with Kate being the sole survivor of that incident.

Fascinating article in the NYT about the last two Shakers (gift link from Eric Conrad on bluesky). I've long wanted to write an FF historical romance about two women in the group. Beyond that, I think they're an important case in showing how *when* historical people were radically egalitarian it was in their own terms, not because they were somehow "modern" or "like us" -- they found their way to it using their own cultural tools.

Too many "historical" stories depict a historical person with egalitarian ethics as basically a person who thinks in "modern" terms - as if "modern" is the pinnacle of human beings (and which "modern" do we mean exactly?) given all the wrongs we're embedded in. It really sacrifices something important, which is realizing how truly different people can think even while trying for good ends.

The youngest Shaker in the world is 67 years old, and his name is Arnold. He lives alongside Sister June, 86, in a magnificent brick building designed to sleep about 70 — the dwelling house of the last active Shaker village in the world, at Sabbathday Lake in Maine. Together they constitute one of the longest-running utopian experiments in America. It’s a triumph, as utopian experiments aren’t known for their durability, though the impulse — to start afresh apart from the mess of mainstream society, to reinvent society with like-minded people — has always been strong here. Out of the many that America has fostered, this is one of the most abiding. Out of the tens of thousands of Shakers who have lived out their faith in the last quarter-millennium, these two remain.

They organized their lives around the belief that work is a vehicle for the divine: When early Shakers planed wood for a barn, or designed that barn, or sheared sheep, or rolled out a pie crust, they understood themselves to be worshiping. Every day, through their labor, the flawed world in which they lived could be made more whole.

Though it’s hard to get a precise count, at Shakerism’s height in the 19th century, the community numbered roughly 5,000. Over its history, 19 Shaker communities spread out from New England as far west as Ohio and south into Kentucky and Florida. Now some of the most tangible products of their philosophy — the furniture — are more well known than the religion itself. Their chairs are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art; knockoff replicas are sold in big-box stores. The traditional Shaker “aesthetic” is so popular that The New York Times’s Style section ran a 2022 feature on the influence of Shaker design on contemporary “tastemakers.” When I mentioned to a friend that I was writing about the Shakers, she replied, “Are those the furniture Christians?”

...Once, after supper, I asked Brother Arnold, “What makes a good Shaker?” He was in the recliner in the corner of the kitchen, looking at his phone. He told me about the willingness to labor, both physically and spiritually, in perpetuity. This is what it takes. Not everyone can do this work knowing that they might never see the fruits of their labor. “The idea that we need to see results in our lifetimes — that’s not how the Shakers actually teach us to think about those types of achievements,” Graham pointed out to me. “That’s man’s time, not God’s time.” Brother Arnold said to me more than once that Shakers live “in the eye of eternity.”

There are a lot of people around Sabbathday Lake striving to labor in the eye of eternity these days. Maybe a new Shaker will come this year; maybe not. But in the Meeting House this summer, people are singing. Lavender is drying from the eaves of the old sisters’ shop; future harvests will hang in the new herb house. A concept of survival and flourishing that isn’t primarily concerned with linear time or material gains may be the most radical thing about this historically radical American religion, and the one most resonant with a world that is experiencing, constantly, its own existential threats and calamities. It is obvious by now that everyone and everything is dying and living all at the same time, that failure and hope are all mixed up, and still the sheep are lambing and the roof has sprung a leak again and you’ve been snappish and petty even though you swore you’d be better and someone has to make breakfast and even breakfast can be a gesture of belief in the world as it could and should be.

I'm Sorry, but why be team Conrad means that you can't have some grace for Jeremiah? Belly made a mess and it's okay to admit. She kissed Jere three times, asked him for going to the ball. They were hearing towards something. He found out his mom hás cancer and is probably dying the night before and he can have a moment? People act like he has no right to have feelings while excusing Conrad. Belly kissed two brothers in three days. Comparing with Cam's situation makes no sense. Cam mom's isn't dying and he doesn't have years of friendship and complicated feelings with Belly than Jere has. Also, in the begining of the Second book Jeremiah is rightfully mad at Belly, who supposed to be his best friend, for abandoning him while his mother was dying because she (as always) had drama with Contas. It's not about him not linking she was there for Conrad. Also, I hope Jenny drop the ridicolous "cheating" storyline because It was a cheap mechanism to get Belly and Conrad toghether without make them look bad because they had tears to sort out their relationship and Belly had a serious relationship with Conrad's brother. Also, If Jenny wanted keep the cheating storyline she shouldn't have made Jeremiah bisexual and perpetuate a disgusting steryotype. Conrad and Belly should be able to be toghether without destroy Jeremiah character, Jenny just need to be Brave and not take the easy, boring road.

I think you must be new here or you have only read a select few of my posts because I know I have said before that all of the characters deserve empathy and grace. All of the kids are messy and make dumb mistakes and hurt each other, but given what they are all going through, it's understandable. Losing Susannah was hard on all of them. For Jeremiah and Conrad because it's their mother, but also for Steven and Belly, since they also love Susannah and she is a bonus mom/an aunt to them. And it's also even harder to go through all of that at their age AND when it's the first death of someone you love you've ever had to deal with (which it is for all of them). I lost a very close family member (before I ever read the books) and when I tell you I felt all of their pain through all of the books...I feel for these kids, I really do.

It seems like we may be misunderstanding each other a little here...I assume you are responding to the most recent asks I answered and I think you are taking those responses out of context. I was talking specifically about the season 2 trailer and the sneak peek of Belly talking to Jeremiah about her and Conrad. And I will stand by what I said before- I don't think there is any excuse to talk to someone that way (and to yell at her that line about his mom dying. Belly already knew, was also hurting about it, and clearly felt like shit for what she was doing to him). In my personal opinion, you can explain someone's behavior, but nothing excuses it. In the end, we are all responsible for our own actions and the things we say. And yes, I will agree everything Jeremiah was going through at that moment was a lot and he was in pain, and Belly broke his heart on top of everything with Susannah. And that explains why he reacted that way, but it doesn't excuse his behavior. He knew it wasn't right to yell at her like that, but he wanted to make her feel like shit in that moment so he didn't care. Also, I was talking about a specific line She says in the trailer, "I was so focused on being there for Conrad, and I should've been there for you too" which is heard after Jere yells "We hooked up and then you hooked up with my brother!" and while I think his feelings are valid, Conrad also deserved to have Belly be there for him when he really, really needed her, and she shouldn't have to feel bad for that. I could be interpreting this wrong, but the way she said it made it sound like she was talking about when she and Conrad were dating and Susannah was sick, it wasn't that there was drama with him or they were fighting, she was just comforting her boyfriend Conrad and she put all of her energy into Conrad. It's an impossible situation to navigate, and no matter what she did someone would have been hurt. I think also in the 2nd book and season 2, she feels weird talking to Jeremiah after everything because he got all weird and upset and we know in the show he yelled at her that they're no longer friends. Yeah, Belly shouldn't have bounced between the brothers like that and she definitely hurt Jere, but Jere also made his own bed. In the books, she actually rejects Jeremiah in book 1 when he confesses his feelings and then he acts kinda weird and jealous at the end. There this little bit at the very end of book 1 after she kisses Conrad where Belly, Jere and Con are swimming in the pool together and Conrad flirts with Belly and touches her hair (or something along those lines) and Belly sees Jere looking at them all weird and jealous and it makes her feel weird and bad because she knows she's hurting him. It wasn't right that she stopped talking to Jere and didn't give him support when Susannah was dying, but I think she just didn't know if he even wanted to speak to her (it's not like he ever called her) and she felt like he was mad at her (which he is).

I think it's worth mentioning that when Belly chose Jeremiah for the deb ball, Conrad told her she made the right choice even though he was hurt and really wanted it to be him. He also never made her feel bad for choosing Jeremiah in book 2, never at any point said anything to her about her wanting to be with Jeremiah, he never even got angry at her for kissing Jeremiah or for ultimately choosing Jere (and I know people are going to say that was different bc Conrad told Jeremiah he could have her, but in the end it was up to Belly, and she could have picked Conrad, but she didn't) and in the 3rd book he didn't say anything rude or angry to her even when he found out about the engagement, he only got upset at the end when he found out that Jeremiah had cheated on her and she was okay with it (and btw, that's one big reason the cheating thing is important to begin with. it's the thing that makes Conrad admit his feelings). But Jeremiah makes her feel like shit for liking Conrad and wanting to be with him, and then he's a jerk to Conrad (his own brother!) and goes out of his way to rub the fact that Belly picked him in Conrad's face.

I don't think anything I say will change your mind so I won't waste much more energy on explaining this, but the cheating was important and it was basically the center of the book 3 storyline. I LOVED the 3rd book and from the time I first read it I could imagine how well it would play out on screen and the whole insane wedding thing would make such good material for a show. I truly do not understand how people are so against it. It's like a soap opera. And with these actors it will AMAZING. Also Conrad's POV is the best.

I don't understand why everyone is coming at me about the cheating thing. Idk what y'all want me to say or why you're all so mad about it, I literally do not get it. I'm sorry I want the show to follow the books I guess? I didn't think that was such a crazy outlandish thing to say. I also would strongly advise you to enjoy season 2 and then take all the time between s2 and when s3 comes out to prepare yourselves, because the show is already following the books so closely that I feel pretty confident saying s3 will follow the books as well, Jeremiah will probably "cheat" and then propose to Belly and we will get to see them planning the wedding all summer with help from Taylor and Belly's new college friends. Also please remember that I didn't write the book.

It’d certainly be interesting! Javi and his crew would be more menacing as new frontier members in my mind. Eleanor is lowkey already a snake so she’d easily fit into Joan’s role as the true evil ringleader of the new frontier.

It’s hard for me to imagine Javi being part of the group though, unless he’s there against his will or strictly for survival reasons. The new frontier might be completely functionally different in this universe since we got new leaders. Maybe they’re way more deceptively friendly than in canon and WAY more sinister behind the scenes (like the OG story concepts for S3?) Hence why Clem is so distrustful despite Javi and everyone’s friendly demeanors.

Shaun Michael Spaulding has been missing since March 17th, 2022. The then-39-year-old man was last seen at the Homewood Suites Hotel on New York Avenue NE in Washington, DC. Shaun never returned to his home in Arlington, Virginia and has never been seen or heard from again. 

Shaun was reported missing to the Arlington County Police. It was initially believed that he was last seen on March 15th, 2022, when he was last seen at home by his roommate. However, it was later determined that the last known sighting of Shaun occurred two days later, at a DC hotel located approximately seven miles away from his residence. 

Police have not disclosed who reported seeing Shaun at the Homewood Suites that day. Shaun's family members shared that he was a regular user of Grindr, and they expressed concerns that his disappearance may be connected to someone he met on the app. Police have declined to comment on any information about their investigation into Shaun's case due to its ongoing status. 

It does not appear that Shaun vanished on his own accord. Reports state that Shaun was diagnosed with health conditions that require daily medication - which was left behind at the time he vanished. Shaun's cell phone and bank account have also been inactive since the day of his disappearance. 

Shaun is described as a white man, 5 foot 7 inches tall, and approximately 145 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Shaun also may go by the names Conrad or Michael.
