Blocking Ads on Mobile Devices

Blocking ads on our phones is way harder than it should be so I figured I'd make some recommendations. These are not the only options out there, just the ones that I know and use.

Please note that browser-level and system-level adblocking are complementary; you'll have the best experience if you use both of them together as they each block different things in different places. If you want a basic idea of how effective your combined adblocking setup is, you can visit this website in your mobile browser.

Lastly, there is some additional advice/info under the readmore if you're curious (EDIT: updated June 2024 to add info about sideloading altered versions of social media apps that don't contain ads on Android and iOS).

AdGuard DNS only (this is free and does not require the AdGuard app, BUT I would only recommend it for advanced users, as you can't easily turn it off like you can with the app. Credit to this Reddit thread for the DNS profile)

Some additional info: browser-level blocking is a browser addon or extension, like you might be used to from a desktop computer. This inspects the HTML code returned by websites and searches for patterns that identify the presence of an ad or other annoyance (popup videos, cookie agreements, etc.). System-level blocking is almost always DNS-based. Basically whenever an app asks your phone's OS to make a connection to a website that is known for serving ads, the system-level blocker replies "sorry, I don't know her 🤷‍♂️💅" and the ad doesn't get downloaded. This works in most places, not just a browser, but be warned that it might make your battery drain a little faster depending on the app/setup.

Each of those types of blocking has strengths and weaknesses. System-level DNS blocking blocks ads in all apps, but companies that own advertising networks AND the websites those ads are served on can combine their services into the same domain to render DNS blocking useless; you can’t block ads served by Facebook/Meta domains without also blocking all of Facebook and Instagram as well because they made sure their ads are served from the same domain as all the user posts you actually want to see. Similarly, browser-level blocking can recognize ads by appearance and content, regardless of what domain they’re served from, so it can block them on Instagram and Facebook. However, it needs to be able to inspect the content being loaded in order to look for ads, and there’s no way to do that in non-browser apps. That’s why using both together will get you the best results.

These limitations do mean that you can’t block ads in the Facebook or Instagram apps, unfortunately, only in the website versions of them visited in your browser. It also means ads served by meta’s/facebook’s ad network in other apps can’t be blocked either (unless you're one of the rare beasts who doesn't use facebook or instagram or threads, in which case feel free to blacklist all Meta/FB domains and watch your ads disappear 😍; I'm jealous and in awe of you lol).

One note: some apps may behave unpredictably when they can't download ads. For example, the Tumblr app has big black spaces where the ads are, and sometimes those spaces collapse as you scroll past them and it messes up scrolling for a few seconds (UPDATE: looks like the scrolling issue may have actually been a Tumblr bug that they have now fixed, at least on iOS). Still way less annoying than getting ads for Draco Malfoy seduction roleplay AI chatbots imo though. And honestly *most* apps handle this fairly gracefully, like a mobile game I play just throws error messages like "ad is not ready" and then continues like normal.

One final note: on Android, you may actually be able to find hacked versions of Meta’s apps that have the ad frameworks removed. In some cases they are a little janky (unsurprisingly, apps don’t always take kindly to having some of their innards ripped out by a third-party), and they are often out of date. BUT in return you get an Instagram app with no ads whatsoever, and some of them even add additional features like buttons for saving IG videos and photos to your phone. However, use these apps at your own risk, as there is functionally no way to validate the code that the third-parties have added or removed from the app. Example altered IG app (I have not vetted this altered app, it's just a popular option): link.

It is technically possible to install altered apps on iOS as well, but Apple makes it much, much harder to do (unless you are jailbroken, which is a whole different ballgame). I'm not going to cover sideloading or jailbreaking here because even I as a very techy person eventually grew tired of messing with it or having to pay for it. Battle Demo Guide

Welcome to Mythaura's battle demo! Here's a concise guide to help you navigate the 3v3 battles and make strategic decisions:

1. Battle Setup

The battle takes place between your beasts (on the left) and the enemy beasts (on the right) and ends when one side is defeated. For this demo, all beasts in this demo are level 1 and have average size for their species.

2. Beast Details

Click on the info icon in the corner of your beast's avatar to view its details. From here, you can read their abilities and see a breakdown of their stats.

3. Elements

Each beast has 2 elements, including a species element that is always shown. You won't know your opponent's secondary element.

For this demo, a beast's secondary element is currently randomized.

Check the elements page for more information on elements and for a breakdown of type effectiveness.

4. Turn Actions

Each turn, your beasts can perform one of the following actions:

Use an ability or surge ability.

Defend themselves or an ally.

Rest to regain stamina.

Once all players have submitted their actions, the round is resolved with the following priority:

Resting beasts rest first.

Defending beasts defend next.

Abilities are resolved.

Within each action type, the order is determined by ability priority, beast speed, weight (with lightest going first), and then randomly if all those values are the same.

5. Abilities

Beasts start with 4 abilities: one surge ability (species-based), one neutral ability, and one ability for each element. If a beast's species and individual element match, they will have 3 abilities.

Abilities with elements can be super effective or resisted, affecting the damage dealt. Pay attention to moves' effectiveness and your foes' abilities for better results.

Abilities incur fatigue and the fatigue cost is shown on the ability button.

Abilities will generally have a small chance to miss or be a critical hit. The chances of these can vary per ability.

Abilities have 3 types: Combat, Projection, and Support.

Combat: Attack vs Defense

Projection: Focus vs Barrier

Support: Non-damage dealing abilities

6. Surge Abilities

When a beast's surge meter is full, they can use their surge ability for a powerful effect. Surge abilities don't incur fatigue and never miss. After using a surge ability, the surge meter goes back to 0%. Please note that the surge abilities in this demo may be changed before the game’s official launch.

7. Defending

Beasts can defend themselves or allies, reducing incoming damage by 75% for that turn. This effect does not stack. Defending slightly charges the defender's surge meter and recovers a small amount of stamina.

8. Resting

Resting recovers a substantial amount of stamina and a small amount of health.

do you have any sources on ai energy use not being that big a deal? everything i see about seems to be really fear mongering bad faith stuff so i’d like to read a more balanced approach

Don't get me wrong, the energy use of AI is pretty expensive, and even if it's a small fry when many applications are still in development, mass adoption of tools could push it up to a significant power draw. Investigating ways to improve efficiency is important and thankfully there are lots of roads towards that that are being studied.

What I'm not overly convinced of is that the energy use of AI apps is too disproportionate compared to other industrial production processes and, at inference, other calculation intensive cloud computing operations. Data centers already pump out a lot of carbon doing boring business tasks. I think the reason people focus on AI specifically is because they want to reuse the angle they had against crypto, but imo that was a different beast because no useful work was being done. ML apps are actually doing calculations with a purpose, crypto proof of work just crunches empty numbers for their own sake.

That said maybe I was a bit too dismissive off AI energy cost in my initial post. Like all things that cost power these days we should be looking into ways to cut back, it's just that I don't think that that means that AI apps are a nonstarter, just that they exist in context with other things that people do with their energy, some of which are more frivolous but probably comparable in aggregate. Ultimate answer is to decarbonise energy production and increase data center efficiency in general...

As for sources, it's hard to find a good source that provides specific numbers on the overall power use of AI, most estimates are just for individual models. Some people have made ballpark guesstimates that it might be pretty intensive in the future, but if you want exact numbers now - well if somebody has a source for that now I'd also appreciate it.

An online ad featuring an artificial intelligence-generated version of Scarlett Johansson without her permission appears to no longer be online following a request from the actor’s attorney.

Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar allegedly used actual footage of Johansson from a campaign she did in conjunction with Omaze, a for-profit fundraising company that often partners with celebrities, and Marvel Studios, according to Variety. 

NBC News has not viewed the advertisement. It appears to no longer be on X, where it originated.

“We do not take these things lightly,” Kevin Yorn, Johansson’s attorney, said in a statement. “Per our usual course of action in these circumstances, we will deal with it with all legal remedies that we will have.”

The advertisement first began to bubble up on X around Saturday. Text under the advertisement read, “Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person,” according to Variety.

Lisa AI is one of a number of AI apps that have flooded the market in recent months. It lets users “create amazing artworks with AI,” including text suggestions that produce images, its website says. As of Wednesday night, the app appeared to be available on both Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

Representatives for Lisa AI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 

Johansson is the latest celebrity to take issue with the alleged misuse of her likeness in AI, as deepfakes — a type of artificial media in which people’s faces are replaced with those of other people — and the technology behind them becomes more sophisticated.

Actors have also been sounding the alarm about AI images for some time. The digitally altered images have been a sticking point in the negotiations between the Hollywood studios and SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, which is on strike. 

Last month, actor Tom Hanks posted on Instagram that he had “nothing to do with” a computer-generated image of him “promoting some dental plan.” Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late actor/comedian Robin Williams, called the AI recreations of him circulating on the internet “personally disturbing.” And YouTube star Jimmy Donaldson, who goes by Mr Beast, also shared with his millions of followers that a deepfake advertisement using his likeness was a scam. The advertisement he posted about was quickly removed from TikTok.

(Part 001)

Tessa yawns and blinks quickly to chase away the sleepiness. Her brother Tyler is sitting on a couch next to her, stuffing his mouth with popcorn. They decided to go for a Star Wars marathon tonight and Tessa is already regretting it. It’s true it’s only barely midnight and a Friday evening but she had a tough day at work and her eyes are closing for the last hour or so.

“Wake up!” Ty nudges her with his elbow and offers her a can of energy drink.

Tessa cringes with disgust and shakes her head. She would never put such toxic junk into her body. She glances over to the floor by the heater where she put two single bed mattresses covered in stretch bed sheets. They serve as extra large and comfortable dog beds for her four dogs. They are already happily sleeping for hours and Tessa (not for the first time) is envious about their life. She would love to just crowl there and sleep surrounded by them.

Suddenly her phone beeps. A message? At this hour? It must be something from her operator. Tessa picks her phone but the message is not SMS. It’s a text from an unknown number. The sleepiness is gone.

Nathan: Hello there! Do you remember me? From the company Christmas party?

Tessa: Mmm… Hello… I… Nathan: You have no idea, right? You don’t know who I am. 😂 Tessa: I’m sorry, there were many people at the party. Don’t blame me. Nathan: I don’t blame you. We were briefly introduced to each other. I’m the tall handsome guy you met there. 😉 Tessa: … You probably think you made it easier for me but no. 🤔 Nathan: 😢 Now I feel hurt. Tessa: I was introduced to like 20 people there and I only remember the once that could be potentially beneficial for me at work. Nathan: Same for me, ma’am 😊

Is this guy serious? He’s bothering her because of work this late at night on Friday? Tessa decides to quickly put him at his place.

Tessa: Oh I see! But you shouldn’t share work related information through private chats. Tessa: Please use the official secured communication channels. Tessa: Like company email or our secured instant messaging app. Tessa: Send your inquiry there. Is it urgent? It’s no longer my business hours but if it’s important, I can log in. Nathan: 😂😂😂😂😂 Nathan: Oh dear! No! Wait! I’m sorry for the misunderstanding. Nathan: I should have stopped you earlier but I was laughing so hard. Tessa: I don’t follow… Nathan: I’m not texting to solve work related issues. Although I admire your professionalism. 😉 👍 Tessa: 🙄 Nice… What do you want then?

Tessa pinches the bridge of her nose. Another cocky idiot from work. Tessa works in a bank and it’s a perfect environment for Alpha males with overgrown egos. She met several of these before.

Nathan: Come dine with me! 🍷 Tessa: Excuse me? Nathan: Don’t you eat in the evening? Tessa: It’s nearly midnight. Nathan: And you’re up. So get dolled up. I’ll send you a cab. Tessa: … Tessa: You can’t be serious. Nathan: Come on! I’m in the hotel bar alone. Come and keep me company! Nathan: I hate eating alone. Tessa: I’m sorry but that sounds like your problem. Why should I bother?

Is this guy even real? How can he think she would just come running at him snapping his fingers like that? Someone would need a proper trimming of their ego here.

Nathan: Come on, babe! Don’t make me beg. Tessa: Well, if you ask me to actually get up, make myself decent Nathan: You don’t have to be decent 😉 😈 Tessa: 🙄 … ride a cab and keep you company as if you were a 10-year old boy Tessa: A little begging is mandatory, to be frank Nathan: … Nathan: No, seriously. I never beg. So just come over and let’s have fun! 🎆 Tessa: If you beg me 😎 Nathan: 🙄 Ah! Fine! PLEEEEEEEEASE! Nathan: Happy now? Are you coming? Give me your address so I can send you a cab.

Tessa is already fully awake anyway. This macho man clearly needs to teach some manners. She gives him an address of a nearby non-stop convenience store, she would never share her address with this guy. She briefly informs her brother about her plans.

“Send me his phone number and name and ask the cab driver where he’s taking you and text me so I can inform the police if you don’t come back. And take the taser gun and pepper spray with you.” He says, his eyes never leaving the screen with Luke Skywalker destroying the Death Star.

“As always. I’ll text you when I arrive on the spot and everytime I manage to go to the restroom.”

Ty shows thumb up.

Tessa jumps into a cab dressed for success but she’s covered in a nice black coat. She quickly interviews the cab driver and texts Tyler. Once she’s standing in front of a fancy hotel, she texts her brother again and heads to the hotel bar. She leaves her coat in the dressing room so she enters the bar with confidence, dressed in tight shimmery leggings combined with black leather and lace tunic. It’s not exactly revealing apparel but inspires the imagination. Tessa works hard, doing yoga and weightlifting, to maintain her hour-glass figure. She’s not exactly chubby but she’s got plenty of curves, suggesting she’s not denying herself a cake from time to time. Tessa wears her shoulder-length wavy blond hair out of her steel grey eyes using black stretch bandana.

Tessa quickly scens the room and notices a tall dark stranger by the bar. It must be Nathan. She strides confidently towards him. When she’s half way there, he looks up from his drink and his eyes lock with hers. A smug smile appears on his face and Tessa can’t wait to wipe it off.

“You look even better than I remember from the Christmas party.” Nathan says as Tessa takes a seat on a bar stool next to him. “What do you drink?”

“Matcha tea if I’m supposed to stay awake at this hour.” Tessa says and nods at the bartender to call him.

“You’re not a night-owl, huh?” Nathan chuckles. “But seriously? A tea?” Tessa looks into his jade green eyes, never dodging. Nathan gulps and breaks eye contact to speak to the bartender. He asks for matcha tea for you.

“Honestly, I’m not used to listening to somebody’s orders like this.”

“And yet you are here!” Nathan smiles at her with confidence. His face is indeed handsome, all sharp angles, beautiful eyes, attractive lips and smile. He’s got short black hair, nicely layered and styled. The impression of perfection is only disturbed by the two-day shade of facial hair. Interesting detail. Men like him usually don’t skip shaving. Everything else on him is meticulously perfect.

“Scolding someone doesn’t have the same effect over messages.” Tessa retorts.

Nathan laughs again and stands up. “Why don’t we sit at the table and have dinner so you can go back to bed…” He makes a pause and checks Tessa out shamelessly. “... be it yours or mine.”

Tessa rolls her eyes and follows him to the table. She is served with her tea instantly. Nathan is truly tall, his body underneath an expensive suit is likely lean and toned. His walk has a certain rhythm suggesting he might be a good dancer and… well… lover.

Tessa skips the meals in the menu and checks the desserts, ogling Nathan from behind the menu.

“Anything you would like to bite?” Nathan looks up and straight into her eyes, grinning mischievously.

“Certainly but let’s eat first.” Tessa says with a quiet voice, watching the effect of her words on him.

Nathan smiles happily, clearly thinking this will end well for him. Waiter comes, Tessa orders an ice-cream sundae for herself. Nathan looks a bit surprised but he orders beef steak for himself. “Ice-cream? Don’t you want anything more?” He asks as soon as the waiter is gone.

“I’ve already had dinner. I’m fine with just the dessert.” Tessa says and looks into his eyes. “Why do you need me to sit here with you?” She asks.

Nathan shifts a bit on his chair. “I told you. I don’t like to eat alone.”

“Why me, though? You could easily hit on any woman in this hotel.”

“I remembered our meeting at the party. That’s all.”

“Did I make such a big impression on you?”

“Well, clearly I didn’t impress you when you didn’t remember me.” He chuckles but it’s more insecure than joyful laughter. Nathan clears his throat. “Why did you come?”

“I was curious.”

“And? What’s the verdict?”

“Hmm… it’s not bad but it could be better.” Corners of Tessa’s mouth rise a bit in a teasing smile.

“Was I way too bossy?”

“You were.”

“I’m sorry. I’m used to giving orders and I expect them to be followed.”

“I’m the same.”

Nathan’s eyes sparkle. “I’m afraid I won't let you boss me.”

“Did I ask for your permission?” Tessa says calmly, her eyes fixing him on the spot.

“No, seriously, I think I’m not ready for something like this.” Nathan says and his voice is much more nervous than before.

Tessa shrugs her shoulders. “Text me when you are ready, then.” She stands up.

“What? Wait! You’re leaving? What about your ice-cream?”

“You can have it. It’s the only dessert you’re gonna enjoy tonight anyway.” Tessa breezes over her shoulder walking away, aware of his piercing eyes following her every move and sway of her hips.

It had been a day; just like any other, when you saw your ex on your way home from work. They acted like nothing had ever happened and waved at you, smiling, calling you over. You decided to ignore them and just walk on, but it triggered some bad memories and you started crying.

You started to run, because you could hear them still calling out to you, starting to get angrier. Thankfully, you ran into your friend Vincent. He wrapped his arms around you before you could fall. Without realising it was him, you whispered in his ear, “please help me. There’s someone chasing me.”

“Who?” He asked in quiet anger.

“Vincent?” you asked as you pulled back slightly to look at him. You smiled softly upon seeing his face. You were about to look behind you to point them out when you remembered that he knew about your ex, so instead of turning around, you told him.

He looked over your shoulder, glaring at someone, you guessed it was your ex. He turned back to you, “how about we get you home and you can tell me what happened?”

The walk was nice, he kept his arm around you the whole time, it felt both supporting and comforting. Once you got back to your place, he guided you to your room, “once you’re ready, let me know what you want. I’ll bring you a glass of water.”

You changed out of your work clothes, and into something more comfortable, before walking out and over to Vincent. You sat with him as he held you close to his side, as you told him how you saw your ex and that seeing them triggered you.

He stayed with you for the rest of the evening. You had been having trouble all evening asking Vincent what you wanted, which was for him to stay so you weren’t alone.

He said goodnight but before he could leave, you grabbed his hand. He turned to you and the only thing you got out was a quiet, “please.”

He looked down at you, “you want me to stay?”

“Please, Vincent,” you whispered.

He wrapped his arms around you and pulled you closer. “I won’t leave you.” He pulled you back. “How about we move to the bedroom? You’ll have better luck sleeping and you won’t be as sore in the morning.” He started to guide you to the room.

He took his shirt off before getting into the bed with you, holding out his arms for you so you could be held by him, knowing it made you feel safe.

You went straight into his arms, and he wrapped them around you securely, kissing your forehead. “You’re safe now. I’ve got you.”
