It is also a huge relief to know that it IS possible to get Olive integrated with a cat that isn't Hoper. She's got some trauma from when she was my mom's cat (as a baby kitten) with just being like thrown in with a bunch of adult cats who wanted to kill her so it's amazing that it's possible for her with a little time, i really wanted to see this before Rascal got adopted out

Birdrezzzzzzzzzzzz..... Part 31(?)
masterpost I tried to give this a read over, but so exhausted. It's an awkwardly cut little bit anyways, but hopefully you all enjoy the birb.
Bruce cleared his throat and carded his fingers through Danny’s wing after the towel. “If your wings stay around, we’ll have to look into producing an artificial waterproofing substance for them. I can’t imagine that it would do you any good to be walking around Gotham with damp wings.”
The thought made Danny want to hunch in on himself. “I don’t think I want to walk around Gotham with wings at all.”
“If they stay, you can’t just hide away from the world,” Bruce said.
Danny sighed and rubbed at his face. “I’d like to say I can, but I think that might turn into an argument and I don’t really have the energy for that today.”
“Maybe a little bit of an argument, but only for your own sake. I don’t want you to feel like you have to hide away like that because of who you are.”
It was more what he was, wasn’t it? But Danny felt that might end up in a bit of an argument also. And maybe it was wrong. Even if he was no longer ‘Phantom’ as a hero, Phantom was still part of his identity. Eventually it would be his only identity.
“Sadly, not everyone is as accepting of oddities as you and your family, even if things are better now with the more public nature of Metas.”
“I know that not everywhere is there yet, but I would hope that at least WE is somewhere accepting.” Bruce’s frown was obvious in his voice. “If it isn’t, then that’s something that I’ll have to work on.”
“I’m sure you could just sick Lucius on them. He’s not the type to put up with it either.”
“He really isn’t—or any sort of intolerance like that. If it comes to you going to work with your wings out, promise that you will at least talk to one of us if someone is any sort of an issue. At that point it isn’t just about you, that’s not the sort of person we would want at WE,” Bruce said.
Danny gave a little hum.
“Danny.”
“I promise, I promise,” Danny said with a little wave of his hand. “I know there are a lot of people who work to make WE a good place, and I wouldn’t do anything to sabotage that. As embarrassing as it would be, I’m old enough I can deal with taking the hit if it makes things safer for someone else.”
“You are hardly old, Danny.”
“Old enough, though. And secure enough in my job there. If Lucius hasn’t fired me yet I’m pretty sure that I’m good,” Danny replied. “Besides you have to know what I mean. There’s a point where a lot of little things that used to mater don’t anymore.”
“No, I know. I think that most of that was less about age and more about my horde of children.”
“It’s not even ten and you’re already besmirching our good name?”
“Good morning, Tim,” Bruce said.
“Good morning, Tim,” Danny echoed. “And no besmirching going on right now. We’re just lamenting being old.”
“Oh, yeah, that must suck,” Tim said around a wide yawn.
Danny didn’t try to hide his laugh. It may have been quite a number of years since he was one himself, but teenagers always would be teenagers.
“I’d apologizes for him,” Bruce said as he folded the towel he had been using. “But, well…”
“Kids,” Danny finished with a little shrug. “Don’t worry, you have a good flock.”
“Are we doing bird puns now?” Duke asked as he came into the kitchen with Damian on his heels and Cass to his side. “Someone will have to tell Dick.”
“Or perhaps we preserve our sanity and not mention it to Grayson,” Damian said. “Good morning, Dr. Fenton. I trust you rested well?”
“Just Danny is fine, Damian, and I did, yes. I actually feel a lot better today than I have recently.”
Damian gave a nod. “Then you must stay for a few days so that you can recover fully.”
“Damian…”
“He is not wrong,” Cass said. She dropped a kiss to the top of Danny’s head and then Bruce’s cheek as she passed.
“They really aren’t,” Bruce agreed after a beat, “and you’re perfectly welcome here.”
Danny resisted the urge to chew on his lip. He had rested incredibly well and it would let him keep an eye on Tim and Damian. There was also just something… nice about sitting there at a table as it filled up with other people and their chatter.
“Just a few days,” Danny agreed.
Just a few days was enough.
It would have to be.

Another Deaged Dan and Ellie or otherwise known as Crack pt7
Pt1 Pt2 Pt3 Pt4 Pt5 Pt6
Diana of Themyscura had met many evil men, but few had reached the evil of Lex Luthor. He had kidnaped batmans son, tortured him in numerous ways, and forced him to create a portal? They weren't completely sure about the specifics of the machine. It was obviously a portal, but to where?
Batman had called them in after taking heavy fire when they marched on Luthor previously, and the Justice League founders were currently investigating the area.
Superman especially. He's currently in the medbay recovering from emergency surgery. His sons were sticking near him after the very near death from Luthors' new powers. Last she heard, Lois had arrived on base to support him as well.
"I already told you. They are as safe as they can be." Luthor repeated under her lassos effect. He was tied up on the floor because it was the only thing that was able to stop him from using his powers.
Zatanna and her contact were currently working on a cell for him based on the mystics. Hopefully it was soon.
"Fine. Let's try another question. How do we work the portal?" She tightened to ropes.
"I don't know. My... little badger did most of the...work."
"Don't you dare call him that!" The Red Hood stomped over, picking him up by the lapels on his suit.
"You have no right to call him anything after what you've done. You're so goaddamned lucky I ain't running this mission cause if I was, I'd have ground you to dust underneath my feet and served your head to him." He growled green reflected weirdly in Luthors eyes.
"Red Hood. Back down." Jason growled but roughly dropped him hard enough he heaved as he hit the ground and curled over.
"Never thought you'd be such a killjoy, Wayne." They didn't freeze they were all much to good to freeze, but she could tell it was a near thing.
"That's right. He told me about all of you. He was more than happy enough to tell me everything." Luthor baited them. Batman growled and approached him with a furious snarl.
"Don't let yourself be led astray by anger." Diana advised him. She received the alert that the cell was ready and loaded him up to bring him to the closest zeta. Batman watched her all the while a contrast from everyone else that avoided even looking in her direction.
-----‐----------
"Fuck that hurts." His son complained but didn't shy away from them. Damians never complained before. The giant yeti stood by assorted through what he can only guess as their medical supplies before finding greenish tinted bandages in strange container. He angled his body infront of Damian shielding him from whatever that was soaked in.
"What is that?" He questioned hesitantly."It's fine, Richard, it's just ecto-aids." Damian answered with full confidence. He couldn't take it any longer and pulled the last stitch through gently before rising and starting to pace erratically
"Damian. I promised myself I would take this slow, but I can't. I have no-no! idea where we are, who anyone even is, and why the fuck you're almost a completely different person." He waved his hands around erratically ignoring the yeti placing the 'ecto-aids' on the counter snd leaving.
"We-are in the Far Frozen, in the Infinate Realms where all afterlives exist together. It's the very foundation of the mulitverse."
"What the fuck are even talking about?" His jead was hurting s d he barely restrained him self from screaming in frustration.
" I am...a reincarnation of the High King Phantom, my-his real name was Danny Fenton. He was a superhero."
"I don't-no I don't understand...what- how?"
" I think i should start from the beginning. Maybe you should sit..?" His son asked his voice gentler and almost fragile. Damian wasn't fragile. He'd seen him take out mountains of goons 4 times his size, but for the first time in years, he truly looked all his fourteen years of life. He sat down beside him and bumped his shoulder a silent show of support hopefully.
"In that life my parents were scientists who studied..." For hours he listened as Damian recounted his previous life occasionally telling his own short tales to make him feel better.
"So Lex Luthor is your godfather from another life?"
"Yes, but he prefers Vlad. He doesn't mind, Mr. Luthor, but he hates Lex." Damian winced.
"Well, this is going to take a lot of adjustment. My whole view on life has been fundamentaly been altered." That is a severe understatement. He's met people who've had past lives, but knowing his own son had one was a...adjustment.
"I...understand if you want me to leave."
"What? Damian-"
"It's fine. I understand if you think I'm to..to different..."
"Damian, you are right that you're different, but we're all a little different. The whole family is batshit crazy you know. We would never kick you out."
"But I was difficult before, and now I'll be even worse. I can't even go one day without getting into fights. I'm...wrong-."
"You are perfectly fine just the way you are." He took Damian face between his hands.
"There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. I am so proud of you. You have come so far in just the short few years I've known you. You overcame your past and you can overcome this to."
"I'm scared. What if-father doesnt-...want me?" His lip wobbled, and his eyes glistened in the warm light.
"Bruce loves you. You're his son. And even if somehow Bruce doesn't, I'll be right here because you're my son too. My Robin. It's okay to be scared. Courage is not the absence of fear -"
"But the triumph over it. Do you know how many times you've told me that? I couldn't count it even if I kept a journal. I would never admit to being afraid to anyone but you." His son finished his quote.
"Then why did you run from me?" He could admit that the question had laid heavily on his mind. There wasn't anybody he trusted more than Damian, and he thought he shared the sentiment.
"I knew that if stayed I'd put them in danger." Damian tried to escape his hold on his head to look away but Dick refused to let him go.
"Who, Dami?"
"My-my...children."
"What? How? You're a-"
"It's more like incubation for ghosts. Dan and ellie, the siblings I told you about. Their bodies were injured and discorpolated to the point they had to retreat to their cores. Because of their pasts, they wouldn't have enough strength to heal, so I am hosting them." Many people have hosted...things before and he's sure ghosts are different, but he's heard of spirits and parasites before.
"Oh. That's a lot but it's not...hurting you is it?"
"Not..typically."
"What do mean?" Please don't make me lose you again.
"I needed to get to Frostbite to check if there are any complications, but because of circumstances, it's complicated." He admitted looking anywhere but his eyes.
"What circumstances? What complications?" He tried to keep the desperation out of his voice but he fears he only made himself sound frustrated.
"The Lazurus Pits. I believe they are corrupted ectoplasm. Frostbite would know more about this than i do. I believe that after I got more pure ecto, the corruption was flushed out, but I need to make sure." He makes a note to ask Frostbite about Jason later.
He opens his mouth to ask again, but Frostbite came back. "Is everything all right? Some of my people heard yelling in here?" Dick goes to speak but is interrupted before he can. Damian shakes his hands off and scoots away from him on the table.
"Everything is fine. We were just about to use the ecto-aids." Damian lied convincingly. The yeti sighed, obviously not believing his less than convincing act.
"You requested a check-up? On the young cores, am I correct?" He questioned, moving on from the subject. Dick didn't remember Damian saying anything about the cores, and he had carried him all the way here. He turned to Damian in question.
"We're ghosts, or I'm a halfa, but we do a lot of emotional speaking and sensing auras. Every core has a special ecto-signal, and most can see ecto-bonds aseell. He's obviously put the dots together. It's not hard." Damian explained. The more he learns, the more concerning it gets. He gives Damian an unimpressed look.
"Quite right. It's a special bond that traverses lifetimes that you two have!"
He turned to damian questioningly but he seemed just as lost.
"I sensed the small ecto-signal that I used to sense from your older sister. I thought you already knew?"
"No, no, I don't sense anything. Everything is diluted. I didn't even sense vlad until he was right in front of me before."
"Hmm, let's come back to this later and get you checked out first to make sure there aren't any immediate problems. I may just be mistaken. Jasmine was always a liminal. She never even reached ecto-contamination levels of a halfa." He pondered.
"Wouldn't i atleadt recognize some things if I was her? Dejavu?"
"I doubt it. You might have the soul of her, but without the ecto, you might never regain the memories."
"And we are not contaminated him just to test a theory. No experiments." Damian said with distant eyes.
"Of course, great one. It was merely a thought." And with that the conversation was over and the examination begun.
------------
Stephanie rubbed her eyes with expensive lotion tissues she'd called pointless, but Alfred always kept in stock. The tissue box was blue, and there was another green one beside it. The universe sure had a way of being funny.
"Care for a snack Miss Stephanie?" Alfred asked her with red rimmed eyes, he carried a plate with fancy cheeses and crackers with funny shapes.
"Thanks, Alfie." "Of course, miss." She sighed and ate the lightest cheese with an almost cat-looking shape.
"Do you want one Cass?" Cass was laying on the med bay bed with several bandages crisscrossed on her upper body. She had a heavily wrapped foot and her hair was secured with numerous brightly colored pins to keep it away from the healing scars.
She shakes her head slightly. Steph sighs and stands from the spare bed and takes the tray with her. She spares one last glance to her mourning and benched best friend.
Duke is dressed as signal sans mask bent over the batcomputer. His stance reminds her of Bruce and she can't help but smile. Duke nods his head at her.
"How is she?" He asks, typing and reading several reports. "Sad." She sets the tray on a nearby counter close enough for Duke to snack. He sighs and finally sits down in the chairs.
"Green Lanturn visited the island yesterday. He says it isn't alien."
"Which one?"
"Guy Gardner." She hums thoughtfully. She's met the guy only once before. He seemed a bit hot-headed, but she's heard of good work from him before. Jason's bike sounded out from behind them. He ripped his helmet off and slammed it down on the counter. The tray shakes, and the cheese mixes with the crackers in a pile.
"Amy leads?" She asked him ignoring his anger. He was getting better and now this.
"Do i look it panned out, blondie?" She sighed and pulled herself onto the counter.
"Zatanna had a contact look at the portal. They said it 'reeked' of death. Refused it to get any closer. Deadman is going to check it out today." Duke interupted them.
"What about Constantine?" She took the subject change.
"Still missing. Zatanna found his house yesterday. There was a note of a poker meeting in hell for a piece of his soul. Bruce thinks he lost and pissed of a demon he couldn't escape."
"You've got to be kidding me. How many people are going to go missing?" Jason started ripping off his armor and disappeared into the changing rooms. Hopefully, for a shower, he reeks.
"The Titans went back to the island today."
"How was that?"
"Raven ran into Zatanna and offered to look for Costantine in hell."
"Seriously? That's the worst idea ever."
"Batman said that to. She's probably going to go through with it still, though."
"Obviously."
"Hows your mom?"
"Good. She's worried about me. I keep telling her it's okay, but everyone knows about the cover story kidnappings by now."
" I still think the cover is bad. I'm surprised they even bought it."
"The press will buy anything that makes cops look bad. After that shootout at the mall last week, not a single person got hurt apart from some bruising, but everyone is dumping on the pigs now. Bruce is pissed."
"True. It was just some desperate kids trying to get quick cash anyway. They didn't even have bullets. Now all i get from Bruce is that I should have stopped them from pistal whipping that security guard."
"No shit?" The zeta tube rang out suddenly.
"Spoiler. Signal. Gather the others. We have a lead.
Fucking finally.
------‐---
Dick Grayson was no stranger to restless nights. Being a circus act turned vigilante, he'd been used to working well through midnight. Then he became a cop then Bruce 'died', and he quit. Then he came back and he had to say bye to his son and took a gymnastics training job. Much more flexible hours but just as exhausting. Classes, people, and training all day. It challenged even his extroverted attitude.
The coffee in this dimension wasn't anything like his own. It had an almondy taste to it, and he'd assume it was poisoned if he hadn't already drunken 2 cups a day since he got here.
It never got cold even if he left it out all day in the biting storms outside. It would be a little watery but still hot. He very much enjoyed that. He could drink room temperature coffee, but he still hated it.
They'd been staying at a log cabin in the Far Frozen since they got here four and half weeks ago. He'd questioned just about every yeti and random ghost about raising ghostlings, and hes pretty sure they run in terror when they see him coming by now. He sighed and set down his empty mug.
He spends just about everything day questioning ghosts, Frostbite visits, and spending time with Damian. Rinse and repeat. Don't get him wrong, he loves spending time with damian it was just hard. It's obvious they're running out of time. Bruce will get the portal fixed one way or another and come get them, and damian is scared out of his mind.
His nightmares haven't been this bad in years. It's gotten to the point that Damian starts out the night in his bed. Damian didn't talk in his sleep before it was mainly mumbled. Now it's all he hears.
(Please...I'm alive-im alive-im a real...person)
He gets his own nightmares as well. He sees Danny on the table. Strapped down, his hair, a white dewy halo. His green eyes glow, unseeing. A mix of red and green blood surrounding them. He's struggling with the wounds. Pushing the organs back in. Taking out the rib stretcher. Pushing them back in. Stapling his skin. His hands are covered in blood, both green and red. He thinks they might be a mix of Jazzs memories and his own imagination.
The toaster popping up pulls him from his thoughts. He picks up the burning bread. Swearing loudly and tossing the bread from one hand to the other all the way to the plate. Why didn't he just grab the plate? God he's fucking dumb.
The oven timer beeps, and he grabs his much needed mitt. He pulls out the golden brown biscuits. Alfred would be proud. He's not a bad cook, no matter what the others say. He's just a distracted and experimental one. Alfred often banned him from his experiments growing up trying to cook his parents' meals from memory. Alfred had, of course, pulled up recipes and even made calls. It just didn't taste right it was missing something he'd argue. Now that he was older, he thought maybe the circus was missing things and his parents substituting it the best they could.
He grabs the butter from the fridge and pulls back the wrapping to use the end of the stick on the biscuits. Damian hates when he does it 'unsanitary and gross', but come on, he has to do it as quickly as he can. They're also the only ones who have to eat here! Damians ghostly friends have been bringing back food from the real world for then to eat. He's trying not to wonder where their getting the food.
He grabs the honey jar and uses the fancy stick he can't remember the name of to spread the honey everywhere. He even puts some on his toast. He flips the last few pieces of suspicious looking fake bacon onto the resting plate. The Lunch Lady Ghost had brought for them saying he had to get protein somewhere, but if you ask him, it looks...iffy. He made extra biscuits just in case.
He loads the biscuits and toast on one plate and another for the fakon. He balances two cups of orange juice in one hand and holds the plate with his stomach and forearms. He nudges the slightly open door with his foot. The ghost dog 'Cujo' nips at his ankle and hopps around his feet excitedly.
"Down boy." He jokes half-heartedly. The dog takes his command very seriously and lays on the ground tongue halfway out his mouth. His wagging tail is undeterred by the wood intangiblely sweeping through in wide arcs. Damian is asleep under the covers his body to used to his footsteps to register as a danger anymore. He's trying his best to treat this as a vacation instead of getting used to it, but he can't help but admit he'd love to do this every morning. Making breakfast for them every morning, coming home or driving to pick him up every afternoon, no longer making do with calls and canceled weekends.
"Dami... wakey wakes, eggs, and bakey..." he sings, rubbing his shoulder. He sets the orange juice and plates on their one nightstand next to the baby 101 book they probably all read in Robin training already. He grabs his toast and a biscuit off the plate.
"Five more minutes..."No can do, baby. We've got a busy day today." Dami groans and rubs his face. His hair is much longer than three and a half months ago, no longer under Alfred's tutelage or gels, and now free to curl. He can't resist the temptation and runs his hand through the wild curls. Damian swats his hand away without any real heat, and he jumps on the bed, crawling over Damian and informing his squawk of protest to his side of their bed.
Damian sits up and snatches a biscuit and the baby name book underneath the other book. He pushes the book across the bed without a word.
"Did you find what you wanted? I thought you were going with Dan and Ellie. Like before." He notices a paper sticking out of the book, and he opens to that page. A small paper with Damis fancy scribbling is sticking out.
Dante Jasmine
Eleanor Richard
He sucks in a harsh breath.
"I-I had a rough time deciding on either Dante or Jordan. But I thought he'd like Dante more, you know. Do-do you like it? The names? Is it... okay?" Damian places a hand on his stomach where their cores are resting. They're growing stronger by day. Damian had let him hold his hand there just last night and feel them kicking? Pulsing? It was hard to tell, but Frostbite assured them it was normal and that any day now, they'd phase out. Frostbite had said that ghosts barely incubated for more than a month it only took so long because both the cores and Damian were weaker.
"It would be an honor. To have her named after me. And if Frostbite was right, both of them." Damian smiles and takes a bit of the biscuit. He barely manages to keep the happy tears in.
"I wanted to talk to you about something else as well."
"What Dames?" The last word sounded more like 'duhs' after he started eating his biscuit.
"Tucker stopped by when you were out interagating the yetis yesterday." He blushed and stuffed the rest of the biscuit into his mouth. "He said Constantine was asking around at big leagues poker last week. They invite Tuck all the time, probably to suck up to the Big Guy in charge, you know.
"Since he's been looking after the throne for you?"Yeah, he's been doing a pretty good job. we'll probably revisit it when I'm older, but he said that he was looking for a pair of lost heroes."
"He described us?"
"Yeah, Tucker said it was pretty accurate, too. Even called in some favors. Tucker thinks he suspects something with the dimensions."
"Is he suspicious?"
" I don't think so, but Tuck said he pissed off some demons."
"Enough to go after him?"
"It's John Constantine. What do you think?" Damian said, folding his arms and squinting as if to say 'really?'.
"Fine. You're right. Should we help?"
"I'm sure the league will go after him if anything happens. I'll put some ghosts on the trail. Some cute blob ones, maybe." The league...Bruce.
"We should talk about Bruce." Damian looked away.
"What's there to talk about?" Dick scooted closer, catching a glance at the dog curled below damian on a pillow.
"Bruce loves you damian."
"You already said. God, you're starting to sound like a broke record. Did you know that?" Anger. It's easier to be angrier than admit you're scared. He'd know that well.
"It's true. I know you're worrying about it."
"Do you really think Father will undersrand? Understand them? Leave it alone?"
"You're his son, of course he can!"
"Am i? Am I his son? Or am I just another obligation? A reminder of his mistakes." Uncommon tears threaton to fall from Damians face. Reflecting in the early morning light.
"That's not true. He loves you." God, he was broken record.
"But does he like me? Does he really trust me?" Damian turned to him, fully letting him see the falling tears.
"Of course he likes you. You're his Robin and his son." He reached out a hand to wipe the tears from his face. His heart aches for his son.
Damian threw himself into his arms. His head made his way onto his neck and shoulder. Clutching and gripping his clothes. Dick grabs him and does his best tonadjust him into a healthier position to not hurt either one of them. There's a damp spot on his shoulder, but he ignores it.
"I'm your Robin too..."
"He's your dad, dami." He mutters into his hair. He uses his fingers to soothe the knots in his hair out as gently as he can.
"I wish-wish you were my real dad... not Bruce." Please don't say that. Please, you don't mean it. Damian starts sobbing and shudders against him. Shaking the both of them. He tries to soothe him. Rocking them back and forth.
"Dont say that. Don't do this to me -" He tries his best to get rid of the thoughts. Of them being actual father and son. Of him being able to take Damian home. Of not having to worry about Bruce's reminders that they're brothers. That he's Damians father, not him.
"You're his son." A reminder to himself just as much to Damian that he's Bruce's, not his. Damian just sobs louder. His heart breaks into pieces, and he tries to comfort him, rubbing circles into his shoulder blades. He turns his head and kisses his Baby Bats forehead. This angle allows him to see his face. It was soaked and reddened from the tears. Damian tries to bury himself closer to him.
"No-no..." Damians sobs into his arms. His jacket is drenched.

I re-emerge with a soft and vaguely angsty Nik/Price/F!Reader
Unedited, 1k, enjoy <3
It's not unusual for Nikolai to look after her while Price is away. As a matter of fact it grew common, the burly Russian staying with her more often than not, even when John was home.
And what had originally been a friendly extension of John, extra security at her call, had evolved into another soft body in their bed, both men's mingled cologne sinking into her sheets as she slept tucked between them.
However, these last few days had been devoid of soft embraces and stolen kisses, but rather wretched coughing and sniffly noses.
Nikolai, has been sick as shit for days.
Thankfully, he'd been minding her with only a small amount of caterwauling. Huffing and puffing about her not sleeping beside him, whining as sickly boys are want to do.
His raspy voice somehow stupidly effective in getting him his way.
Can I have more blankets lisichka? he rumbles pitifully.
What will we have for lunch?  he asks with big brown eyes.
As if he could keep anything more than cheese and crackers down.
Unable to sleep due to Nikolai’s chainsaw level congestion snores, she slinks down stairs in the wee hours of the morning. Having already decided to make her favorite comfort food. Something simple, savory and carb heavy for the pair of them.
On a whim she gives John a video call, setting it up on the counter while it rings and rings.
She hardly expects him to answer, he rarely does.  And considering he'd already been gone 4 out of his supposed 6 week stint, she was sure her man was still up to his chest in work.
She's got a maw full of shredded cheese when John's voice rings through the receiver.
“Hello darling”
She sputters, recovering quickly to flash him a big goofy smile.
“Hey love” she whispers back, heart fit to burst as she takes him. There isn't much to see, just the pale light of his phone illuminating his features in the darkness. His beard is scruffy, bags under his eyes far too heavy for her liking.
“Hello” he repeats again, an infinite fondness in his voice. His sweet cheeks pulled up into that little smile that still makes her blush. She sheepishly brushes the remnant shredded cheese off her tits, tries to quickly adjust her hair.
She can see her own image reflected in the top corner of her screen, she looks like hammered hell honestly. Hair a mess, dark circles under her eyes, clad in ratty stained oversized shirt. She almost feels a little guilty for not looking more presentable for him when he chimes in again.
“Missed that sweet face.” he murmurs, and all those nagging thoughts plop right from her noggin. The goofy man would think she'd look hot in a trash bag.
“Missed your face too baby, you okay?” She knows better than to ask about the op, instead lets him pick and choose what he likes to talk about.
“Much better now, might even be home sooner than we thought.”
Her ears perk at that, spiritual tail wagging hopefully. She missed him dearly, occasionally shed tears in the lonely showers away from Nikolai, when the weight became to much for her to bare. She does her best not to say anything, doesn't want him to feel bad for being so far away. Instead she sends him updates, pictures of the animals, of her meals, this weeks favorite song.
He doesn't reply, she knows he can't, but he does read them, follows up with each one in a big text or call when he can. Somehow holding the details despite whatever hell he sees.
“What you makin’ over there?” he cuts in, trying to eye the counter with a raised brow through the screen.
“I was hankerin’ for some potato soup, thought the patient would like it too.” she chuckles a bit.
“Mmm, sweet thing aren't you? How is he?”
“He's only a little whiny, spends his day trying to coax me close enough to cough on me, claims he just wants a cuddle” she laughs.
John chuckles too, shaking his head with a fond exasperation.“Well, you gonna show me how to do it?”
“Huh? Right now? I was just calling…you can get your rest babe, I just wanted to hear your voice.”
“I'm far from tired with a pretty thing cookin for me, now go on.”
She flashes him a knowing look. John Price was no chef, he did well enough, but she'd caught him on more than one occasion following along to the little cooking videos he'd dug up on the internet. Especially those made by other soft southern women.
With an expectant look she continues her work, cutting vegetables and getting the stock pot ready.
“Talk to me love, need to hear your voice.” he reminds her.
Not want. Need. And who was she to deny him? So with a little fumbling she starts narrating, mimicking the smooth diction she'd often heard in those same videos, biting back a smile as she watches John fight sleep. Tired baby blues drooping lower and lower, closing briefly before the sharp snick of cut carrots stirs him again. Eyes straining to keep watch.
Sweet man.
She knows he's exhausted, more so than she can probably imagine. What hell he's had to dodge up until this point, and possibly a few days more until he can see them again.
Something in her chest stirs at how he stills for her, easily drawn into the soft bubble of comfort she can provide at such a distance. Lulled easily by a silly soup recipe, simply because it's her voice. She wonders now if he uses her voice messages similarly. She wonders if he would let her read him to sleep.
She files it away. Along with the thought of sending him softer voice messages for when he's away.
She looks to him again, bristly face squished against his pillow. Eyes closed serenely.
“Wanna know my secret?” she asks, soft and playful, watching one of his pretty blue eyes creak open at her tone.
“W'sat luv?”
“I use instant mashed potatoes to thicken up my soup, makes it extra potatoe-y” she giggles.
“My clever girl” he mumbles dreamily, followed by a string of more barely intelligible praise. It rolls easy and proud from his chest, voice no more than a sleepy purr that makes a grin split her face.
By the time she's finished up John is fully asleep, his measured breaths pouring through the receiver just shy of a real snore.
Her heart aches deep in her chest, a chunk of it long gone and far far away in the form of one John Price, and while she can see him now, know he's alive and relatively well, she longs more than anything to crawl in next to him. Hold him close tucked beneath her chin, where she can keep him warm and safe herself.
As if on cue, a pair of strong arms wrap around her middle, Nikolai’s hot cheek pressed to her temple where he briefly lays a kiss. This time she doesn't fight him.
Getting sick be damned.
“Pretty thing isn't he?” Nikolai rumbles quietly, eyeing the phone screen with those fond brown eyes.
She simply hums an affirmative in his arms, words caught in her throat by the emotion that's threatening to escape her.
Nik seems to catch on, giving her a soft squeeze. “How is he?” he whispers instead, voice low to not wake the man on the other side of the world.
The question is able to at least shake a little out of her. “He seems okay, worn out, fell asleep watching me cook.” She watches John for another moment before sucking in a deep sigh, squirming around in Niks arms to face him, tuck herself into his arms.
“I'm just ready for him to be home” she mumbles into the soft plush of his chest.
Nik pulls her in closer, warm hands petting along her back, squeezing the back of her neck soothingly. “Me too, malyshka” he returns, the weight of John's absence equally heavy in his own voice.
The pair stay there for some time, swaying gently in each other's embrace, listening to John's soft snores until the sun paints their meager kitchen gold.

Epilogue
Caleb awoke to a very dry mouth and a pounding head.
It felt like a really nasty hangover and he had had plenty of those back in flight school. His memory was hazy for the moment so he wondered how much he had drank to feel like this.
He stretched his arm out and met the cool metal of some sort of rail.
What is this? He blearily opened his eyes and focused on his surroundings. A window with ugly green curtains, a wall full of cabinets and drawers, a small sink, a patterned curtain in front of the door, then the machines.
The pain in his arm made him hiss as he moved the wrong way. There was a needle and a tube in his arm, he followed it up to a bag full of liquid dripping down the tube.
Oh, it’s a hospital. Now it’s coming back to him, the shouting, the frantic energy of nurses and doctors trying to keep his heart beating.
He knew this hospital, it was Willow Medical Center in Skyhaven. How did he end up here?
The worst hangover he’d ever felt and it was no wonder. A few weeks of constant evol use on low food and not drinking as much water as he should have.
A recipe for disaster but he was here, he was alive.
It was dark from what he could see through the curtains drawn over the window. Other than the pounding in his head and dry mouth, he was otherwise uninjured.
His crew had actually gotten him safely out of the deepspace tunnel.
A warm feeling in his chest made him cough in embarrassment.
They had somehow gotten him out of the Fleet’s clutches, away from Ever’s influence to a safe place.
All that effort he had expended in getting them home must have left them feeling indebted to him.
He was very grateful for it, if he had been left to Ever’s clutches. They would’ve fixed his chip and taken advantage of his weakened state to upgrade him even more. Sinking their slimy fingers even more into whatever individuality he had left.
He’d worked so hard to fight the chip, it was at 50% integrity now and going down without a fight wasn’t an option.
His crew deserved something in return as thanks but he’d have to think on that more.
Where was his stuff? Only dressed in a hospital gown without a stitch of anything else, Caleb felt very exposed.
Oh there’s his stuff, a neat pile on the side table. His phone off to the side of his clothes.
Caleb really wanted to see her face, even if it was through a picture. Cell phones glitched weirdly in the deepspace tunnel, so he usually relied on his memory and the hidden photo in his pocket to keep her with him.
Then a nurse came bustling in, keeping the light low, he could see a clock behind the curtain she had just pulled aside.
2 am, well, not the worst time to be alive.
The nurse noticed he was up, looking a little shocked before recovering.
“Hello Colonel, how are you feeling?”
He grimaced
“My head has a band playing inside it and I really need some water.”
“Well, I can go and get water for you right now, I’ll send a note to the doctor to put in an order for some pain medication too. Okay?”
“Right.”
“I actually came in to grab some blood for labs, we need to make sure all of your levels are normal now.”
“Go ahead.”
She quickly took out her butterfly needle along with a few vials, sanitizing his arm and quickly drawing blood out.
Snapping her gloves off, she asked
“Anything else I can get you?”
“Can I have my phone from that table?”
“Oh sure, here you go!”
After handing Caleb his phone, she went back out into the hallway. Hopefully to return with water and something for this headache.
There was a universal charging cord attached to the hospital bed for his convenience. Plugging it in, it only took a minute to boot back up.
He saw the day, the fact that it was still a few days shy of his original return date made him a bit relieved.
That is, until he saw the slew of messages from her.
100’s of them, his phone kept going off and it felt like it was going buzz its way out of his grip.
What in the world?
Caleb was very concerned now, she almost never sent him this many. Not while he was gone and couldn’t respond.
Very worried at this point, he opened the earliest message.
Watching it left him in a daze, her bright smile seared into his mind as she had proudly proclaimed that you were pregnant.
Pregnant with his baby?!
He sat in astonishment for just a minute before it really hit him.
Caleb was going to be a father!
He eagerly opened each message after that.
All her cute little complaints about being sick, wanting food but not being able to eat it, her pants not fitting.
The weight loss did indeed worry him but he was reassured just seeing the way she struggled to wear pants now.
Hearing about stealing his clothes made him a bit feral to be honest but also stoked his male pride.
Then Caleb got to the point where she showed him the newest ultrasound, the little bean had little arms and legs now.
He stared at the image for a long while, the heartbeat of his child, his little baby, in the background.
All the joy came to a halt as the love of his life’s crying face came into view.
He had been pronounced MIA and presumed dead?
Oh no.
He noticed the background was now only showing her at his house in all the videos after that, her eyes hollow, her face limp, only the thought of their baby keeping her going.
He clenched his fist, the one that could punch through walls to get to you.
Caleb desperately wanted to call her now, but he didn’t want to do it over the phone. Not to mention that it was still the middle of the night.
He played the next few videos, his heart breaking as his love’s decline was put on display for a man that she thought was dead.
The last video though, it was only yesterday that it was sent.
Oh, oh now he wanted to rip the building apart.
Zayne, that sly bastard swooping in as soon as he smelt blood in the water.
Trying to take advantage of a grieving woman.
The confusion, the phone was laid down as he heard faintly, is that blood.
The word blood made his own run cold.
She was hurt? No, something worse as sobs came over the phone.
“Please don’t let me lose you, you’re all I have left of Caleb. Please baby, just stay with me!”
Desperate pleas came over the phone before the camera was back in her face, utterly wrecked as the video ended.
What the hell?
That’s how it ends?
He needed to leave now.
He started to rip the IV out of his arm and the nurse came back in, carrying a packet and a cup of water.
“What are you doing?!”
“I’m leaving!”
“You haven’t been cleared yet!”
“I’m going and you can’t stop me.”
He stood up and towered over her. The nurse shrank a bit before standing firm.
“Why?”
“You don’t need to know.”
“I do if you’re going to leave AMA! You were in bad shape when you first came in. You’re still recovering.”
“She needs me and I’m going!”
“Wait she?”
He grimaces at the slip before spitting
“Yes, she needs me, there’s something wrong happening and I need to be there.”
“Maybe I can help.”
He stared at the small woman before shrugging.
“If you can tell me what hospital she went to, sure.”
“Are you referring to the woman listed as your emergency contact?”
“Yes.” He grits out impatiently.
She goes to the monitor in the corner of the room and looks at few pages before pulling something up.
“You’re in luck, she’s here in the labor and delivery ward.”
“Great, I’m leaving.”
She stops him with a hand to his chest.
“What is it now?” Snarling at the interruption.
“You can go, but in a wheelchair.”
So thus, Caleb is rolled all the way from intensive care all the way to L and D.
She had bandaged his arm up from where he’d ripped the IV out, he hadn’t even noticed it bleeding.
The nurse asks the night nurse working where she is and they’re directed to a room at the end of the hall.
He’s wheeled through the door and there she was.
Sleeping, looking so small and weary even in the dim light.
The nurse whispers
“I’ll have to go back but just hit the call light if you need anything, ok?”
He nods but doesn’t dare disturb the peace of the room with his voice.
But as the nurse leaves, he’s desperate to touch you.
So he pushes the chair forward by the wheels until he’s by her side. Caleb can now see something miraculous.
A baby bump, a true proof of their love.
Were they okay though? There was no one to ask, but he spies a chart at the end of the bed.
Grabbing it eagerly, he reads
‘Patient presented with mild bleeding at 18 weeks of pregnancy. Scans done and slight placental abruption was found. Mildly invasive procedure done to correct issue. Patient to be kept under observation for 24 hours.’
A very short summary of the situation but it was enough.
The baby, their sweet baby, and her were going to be okay.
Shoulders shaking as a few tears escaped his eyes as he laid a gentle hand on their child.
“Hello little one, I’m your daddy. I’m sorry I haven’t been here so far but don’t worry. I’m not going anywhere.”
A slight bump against his hand and he was instantly in love.
Caleb wanted to scoop them both up and never let them go. His two loves in his arms forever.
A slight noise behind him made him turn his head from the beautiful sight.
Zayne.
His gut tightened.
“What are you doing here?” Caleb tried to keep his voice low but the protectiveness came through.
Zayne pushed his glasses up before answering
“They called me here to check on her heart and so that she’d have a member of her care team here. She couldn’t make it all the way down to Akso hospital so her OB told her to go to Skyhaven’s hospital for now.”
What a perfectly reasonable explanation but he’d heard what Zayne had been doing while he was away.
“You sure move fast Dr.Zayne.”
A raised eyebrow was the only response he got.
“She’s not yours.” Caleb made that clear with a growl.
“From what I hear, she wasn’t truly yours either. Scared of commitment, colonel?”
“That will soon be rectified so you can butt out.”
“Fortunately for you, she told me to butt out before you even came home. I have no plans to stay where I’m not wanted.”
“Good.” The baby bumped against Caleb’s hand again, making him smile.
“But if she needs me again, don’t think I won’t come running.”
With that ominous warning given, Zayne turned around and left the room.
Well, at least that’s done. Where does Zayne get off telling him that though?
She was more important than that sly bastard anyway and Caleb settled in to stay with her until she woke up.
He knew he had to take care of Ever somehow, he had been steadily wearing the chips integrity down so that they wouldn’t have hold over him anymore. It seemed that it was time to move the timeline up.
His two babies deserved him at his best and without these shackles.
He could wait for her eyes to open though. They had a lot to talk about after all.

(Part 17.
We're getting close to the end of the Nice arc. This part covers episode 3. It is also the longest so far, I think. I am excited for the next bits. I think i did good with episode 4. Just an FYI, I SUCK at fight scenes. So I tend to gloss over them. Also. Love the fact that in episode 6, Enlighter basically called Yang Cheng a broke ass bitch.)
Masterlist
“They killed it! Nice is now ranked 12 and Wreck is officially in his redemption arc. Homemaker jumped to rank 300 and even Moon went up ten ranks.” Miss J. Said to herself in satisfaction. She loved it when her plans panned out. Now on to making it to the top 10. She set her sights on Firm Man.
Nice was trembling as he washed Lin Ling’s hair. The blood came out easily from the silky strands. The wound wasn't serious. Just bled a lot. As head wounds tend to do. He was careful of the scab.
“I’m fine.” Ling reassured again after Nuce was done.
“What if you weren't, though?” Nice asked shakily, eyes wide and filled with unshed tears.
“Oh, darling. Come on. Let's go get into bed. Wreck's waiting for us. Today was long for all of us.” Ling cupped Nice's cheek and caught a stray tear with his thumb.
He let himself be carried to the bed and be placed between the two other men. Nice clung to him and Wreck wrapped his strong arms around them both. They fell asleep like that, wrapped in a cocoon of comfort.
The next few days were spent indoors, to give the impression that they needed time to recover from the trauma. And that they were ‘working through’ things with Wreck.
In reality, Ling and Wreck were settling Nice down. He had been so high strung after. Even Moon had stopped by to check in. She had been huge in helping to distract the now ranked 12 hero. It didn't help that his powers were growing with just the three gained ranks. They were buzzing under his skin like angry bees. Funnily enough, though, his OCD hadn't gotten worse.
Ling had politely put earbuds in and blasted some American metal music to drown out Wreck, wel, wrecking Nice in the bathroom to help burn off some of the energy. If Ling tried to leave it sent Nice into a panic. Thus the earbuds and American music.
He’d gotten a decent start on a fluffy, crocheted blanket that could engulf all three of them while Wreck took care of Nice. He had been blushing the whole time, of course.
Moon had died laughing over the video call later. She had been pissed no one had remembered to tell her what had been planned. In recompense, Ling now had to video call her twice a week.
She had put her own name in his, Nice, and Wrecks phones as ‘Crash Out Queen’. A video of her suplexing Nice after Ling’s ‘kidnapping’ had gone absolutely viral.
It had the added bonus of killing the rest of the NiceMoon ship. It had cemented firmly in the ‘siblings that lived to mess with each other’ territory in most people's eyes.
People found it cute that despite their romantic relationship failing, that they could settle into a familial dynamic.
Her ranking had gone up as well. People were impressed that she could suplex like that. It proved that she was physically strong and not just a pretty face.
“So. You want Nice to go after Wolf Girl, so he can hopefully break into the top ten spot?” Homemaker asked as he looked up from his blanket project. Wreck was sitting next to him with an arm around his shoulder. He was looking at Nice and Miss. J at the table in front of them.
“Basically.” She agreed.
“That will mean having to move floors.” Nice grumped. “This was just starting to really feel like a home.”
“Look at it this way. We can get rid of that fucking statue.” Wreck threw in his ten cents. Nice perked up at that. “Better view from up there, too.”
Homemaker thought about how the tower worked. The top 50 heroes lived in it. Ranks 50 to 21 lived on the ‘lower floors’. Ranks 20 to 11 lived in the ‘middle floors’ and 10 to 1 lived on the highest. X, as number one, had the highest and largest floor. The ‘bottom floors’ were the public offices and operational. There were basement floors that acted as the private Operation floors. The floors were also inverted. It went by rank. The ground floor was still just that, but the first floor was at the top.
He couldn't believe he was about to say something so corny “Anywhere is home if you guys are there.” Homemaker told Nice.
The other hero started purring so loud and hard in pure joy that he was visibly vibrating. Wreck let out his own low growly rumble in pure pleasure at that. Miss. J whipped her head over at him with narrowed eyes. The ‘what the fuck?’ clear in her gaze. She got out her phone and sent a message to someone before putting it back.
“Any more objections?” She asked.
“None from me.” Nice said placidly, purr clear in his voice.
“Nope.” Wreck followed.
“More space means I can have a bigger herb garden.” Homemaker shrugged.
“Having you around was the best decision. I expected a fight.” Miss. J said bluntly. Homemaker grinned.
“I’ve been told I am amazing at preventing arguments before they even start.”
Nice, Homemaker, and Miss. J were standing in front of a drainage pipe. Nice was looking vaguely disgusted.
“Yeah. I can see why getting to her would be a … bit difficult for Firm man.” Nice said delicately.
“Yeah. The people believe that Firm man will always stand tall…” Homemaker started.
“Which is great, unless…” Nice picked up.
“You need to crawl.” The two finished in unison. Wreck was laughing in their earpieces. He was waiting in a van not far, in case he needed to step in. Miss. J was always looking for opportunities.
Miss. J started explaining what Wolf Girl had been doing with her little comics. Wreck started choking on air for some reason.
“Are you okay, love?” Nice asked.
“Yeah. Just maybe realized something. Holy shit.” Wreck said, strangled.
Little did they know that he was looking at his larger than average canines in his phone's camera. He then went to the bookmark for chapter one of ‘Fangs and Claws’. The catboy Nice and wolf-hybrid Wreck fanfic by Shut Up and Dance. He muted the coms and started half laughing and half crying. “Oh my fuck. No god-damned way. Holy shit…”
He swore off fanfic for the foreseeable future. He did not want to know.
“We may need a medic down here. I helped out a small timer and he attacked me after. I may have put him into the wall. Allegedly” Nice said sheepishly over the comms.
Homemaker boggled at that. Who would even think of attacking his charge!?
Miss. J sighed.
“Miss. J, what is my current position?” Nice asked urgently. Homemaker went ramrod straight. Something was off.
She did and was shocked. “Your current position is at the top of Hero Avenue!”
She and Homemaker sprinted to the car and started booking it to the location. They heard the explosion.
“Nice? Darling, are you alright!?” Homemaker asked, mentally checking the Thread connecting them. Nothing seemed wrong.
“I’m fine, Sweetheart, I am looking for an exit, though.” He reassured him.
“I’m making my own exit.” Nice said after a few minutes.
Wreck had exited the van a few minutes ago and was hidden, ready to jump in at a moments notice. Miss. J and Homemaker were on foot, running to the epicenter.
They arrived just as Nice broke through the concrete. People started cheering. They started cheering even more once they spotted Homemaker.
“Look! It’s Nice and Homemaker!”
“My mom said they were a couple. Like her and dad!”
Homemaker blushed at that.
“Go! Before she hurts the kid!” Firm man said, straining under the weight of the statue.
Homemaker himself was straining not to jump in himself. A child was involved.
“She’s not going to hurt her. She's not going to hurt anyone. Not even that.” Nice pointed at the statue. “Am I right, Wolf Girl?”
People were really paying attention now.
“She’s here to tear down your facade and reveal the real you. The man that saved her years ago. The man she gave that red scarf to.” Nice explained.
Firm man was in shock at that.
“She wants to set you free from the burden you now carry always.” Nice finished.
Wolf girl took off her mask and revealed a rather pretty young woman underneath.
Firm Man was crying now and thanking Wolf Girl for giving him strength. His tears hit his boots and then they shattered. He was freed.
Unfortunately, that also meant the statue was too much now for him to bear. Nice and Wolf Girl rushed to the now kneeling hero to try and help.
Homemaker felt his power surge once the statue fell on all three. He sprinted forward and started lifting. Panic was flooding his system. He felt someone rush over as well. It was Wreck. They felt the statue lifting. The tree of them lifted it together. Firm Man and Wolf Girl cleared the danger zone as soon as they could. They would be no help.
People were going nuts over Nice, Wreck, and Homemaker working together.
They were being cheered on like crazy.
Miss. J was saying something, but they didn't care. The three were focusing on the statue and each other.

The people of Bourou Village are quite surprised to be receiving waterlogged visitors.
Surprised, and cautious. Quite understandably so, Lumine thinks. From what Zhongli had said, Inazuma was a country that had recently just gone through a tumultuous civil war, so it makes sense that the citizens of a recovering country would be wary of foreigners. Particularly when the country in question was missing its patron god, the Electro Archon who had been slain by the leader of the rebel force.
“The Raiden Shogun, the Narukami Ogosho, is the sole Archon who has ruled Inazuma through the ages. But with Her Excellency’s death, and also the recent passing of Rex Lapis of Liyue… one must wonder if this is a sign that the times are changing.”
A heavy sigh, and the elderly grandmother in front of Lumine shakes her head slowly.
Lumine, for her part, hands over the package of boar meat that she’d been asked to deliver by another villager.
“Thank you, dear,” the grandmother accepts the package. “I hope the ramblings of an old woman haven’t taken up too much of your time. Really, it’s quite unfortunate that you and your friends have not arrived in Inazuma in one of our more hospitable times. But alas… well, perhaps it’s still a sign of fortune in these trying times that you’ve washed up on the shores of Watatsumi. Had it been Narukami Island that you arrived at instead, I doubt you would’ve been treated as kindly.”
“Really?” Paimon inquires curiously from over Lumine’s shoulder. “Watatsumi Island is special, granny?”
“Watatsumi Island is protected by Sangonomiya-sama, the Divine Priestess who leads us,” the old woman says, a hint of pride coloring her tone. “Even without the Raiden Shogun, I believe in her and her vision for Inazuma’s future.”
Lumine blinks. That was a lot of confidence that this grandmother was putting in their ‘Divine Priestess.’ Was this a common attitude among Watatsumi islanders? Just who was this Divine Priestess, to inspire such loyalty from her people?
And… for a prominent figure like this, had she been a major player in Inazuma’s civil war?
Lumine spends some more time talking with the chatty grandmother, before returning to perform other tasks around the village. The people of Bourou Village had been wary of foreigners in the beginning, but the pitiful states of Lumine and the other shipwreck survivors had wrought enough sympathy that they’d been welcomed into the village. They were willing to provide food and other supplies to them, in exchange for menial labor from those well enough to work.
And so Lumine found herself quite busy these days, running errands and learning more about the new country that she’d arrived in. Inazuma was quite different from both Mondstadt and Liyue. Even despite missing their patron god, most of the people that Lumine encountered in Bourou Village were quite resilient, and transparently full of determination and hope for their future.
From what Lumine gathered about Narukami Island, though, where the Raiden Shogun once dwelled and directed the shogunate from… people there might not share the same attitude as the ones of Bourou Village.
Lumine is going to have to travel to Narukami Island, if she wants to find out more information on the Raiden Shogun.
Eventually, the time comes. The other shipwreck survivors regather their bearings, and Lumine prepares to leave Bourou Village as well. Their plan is to head to the Sangonomiya Shrine together. The sailors in order to seek assistance, and Lumine in order to find anyone who might be traveling to other islands in Inazuma, so she can cross the treacherous waters. Hopefully much more safely this time, without any lightning storms.
Before she leaves, though–
“Excuse me,” Lumine asks Kuri, the fisherwoman who is a friendly villager who knows everyone around and is familiar with them all. “I just wanted to ask –do you know where Gojo is? She was the one who directed us to Bourou Village, and I wanted to at least thank her before we left.”
Kuri blinks, “Who?”
“Erm… Gojo? White-haired girl who wears a blindfold?” Lumine tries. “Although I’m not sure if she’s really blind…”
The woman shakes her head. “Sorry, I’m not familiar with anyone by that name. You must’ve happened upon another traveler, I think.”
“Ah, I see.” That was quite unfortunate. But if Gojo was a traveler just like Lumine herself… maybe there was a small chance that they’d run into each other again sometime in the near future?
After all, Lumine’s journey in Inazuma has only just started.

A/N: im scheduling 3 of these to post back to bsck lol hopefully it works 😇🤣
Tumblr media
The three of you were sprawled across the living room floor, wine glasses in hand, surrounded by face masks, nail polish bottles, and the kind of snacks you’d regret in the morning. Wanda had taken it upon herself to paint your toes, and you giggled as she playfully swatted at your ankle to keep you still.
“Stop squirming,” she said, trying to keep a steady hand. “You’re gonna mess it up.”
“Sorry,” you mumbled, taking another sip of wine. “But it tickles.”
Natasha sat cross-legged beside you, a clay mask drying on her face, her wine glass already nearly empty. She was watching you both with an amused smile, though her eyes flickered with a faint shadow of something heavier.
The conversation had been light—work drama, a funny story from Wanda’s day, a ridiculous TikTok—but the wine was starting to loosen your tongues. Feeling the moment, you took a deep breath and decided to jump in headfirst.
“So,” you said casually, but your voice carried enough weight to grab their attention. “What are we going to do about Steve?”
Natasha froze, her wine glass halfway to her lips. Wanda’s brush paused mid-stroke on your pinky toe, and both women turned to look at you.
Natasha recovered first, setting her glass down and crossing her arms. “What do you mean?” she asked, her tone carefully neutral.
You raised an eyebrow, not letting her off the hook. “I think you know exactly what I mean.”
Natasha hesitated, glancing at Wanda, whose wide-eyed expression made it clear she was just as curious. When Nat didn’t say anything, you leaned back on your hands and sighed. “I don’t know how I missed it, honestly. It was written all over you last night.”
Natasha’s jaw tightened, and with a muttered “Oh, for God’s sake,” she grabbed the wine bottle and poured herself another glass, chugging half of it before setting it down with a dramatic clink. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said flatly, but the slight tremor in her voice betrayed her.
Wanda let out a soft laugh, finishing your toes and sitting back. “Oh, Nat. We love you, but that’s the worst lie I’ve ever heard.”
Natasha shot her a glare, but you didn’t back down. “Come on, Nat,” you pressed gently. “It’s us. Just be honest. What do you want to do about Steve?”
Natasha exhaled sharply, running a hand through her hair and smudging a bit of her drying mask. “What can I do?” she said, her voice sharper than she intended. “He’s still hung up on you. Always has been. I don’t want to be anybody’s second choice.”
Wanda immediately shook her head, her expression fierce. “That is impossible. Once Steve realizes how much of an idiot he’s being, he’ll see what’s right in front of him.”
You nodded in agreement, leaning closer. “Wanda’s right. I couldn’t agree more. But what do you want, Nat? What do you really want?”
For a moment, Natasha didn’t answer. She stared into her wine glass, her face unreadable. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet but raw. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “I’ve been on the outside looking in for so long that I guess I’m just… used to it. It’s easier to stay there than to hope for something that might not happen.”
The confession hung in the air, heavy with unspoken pain. You reached out, resting a hand on hers. “Nat, you deserve to be happy. You deserve someone who loves you, who’s crazy about you.”
She let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. “Yeah, well… I don’t want Steve to be the one that got away. Like you are to him.”
Your heart clenched at her words. “It’s not like that,” you said softly.
Natasha’s eyes met yours, her expression firm but kind. “Of course it is,” she said. “And it’s not your fault. It’s just the way things are. But he has to get over you before anything can happen between us.”
Wanda’s hand found Natasha’s, squeezing gently. “You’re not wrong,” she said softly. “But that doesn’t mean it’s hopeless.”
You nodded, your chest tight with emotion. “Steve just needs time. And when he finally lets himself see you for who you really are to him… Nat, I know it’ll be worth it.”
Natasha’s lips twitched into a faint smile, though her eyes were still clouded with doubt. “I hope you’re right,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
The room fell into a brief silence, the weight of the conversation settling over all three of you. But then Wanda, ever the ray of sunshine, clapped her hands together. “Alright, enough doom and gloom. Gimme your feet Nat, your next!”
The tension broke, and you couldn’t help but laugh. Natasha rolled her eyes but nodded, holding out her wine glass. “Fine. But only if you promise not to paint my toes like a five-year-old.”
The rest of the night passed in a blur of laughter and teasing, but Natasha’s words lingered in your mind. You couldn’t shake the hope that, somehow, everything would fall into place for her—and for Steve.
Tumblr media
The apartment was alive with laughter, the clinking of beer bottles, and the occasional groan as someone lost a hand of poker. Sam sat sprawled on the couch, his feet kicked up on the coffee table, while Bucky leaned back in his chair, shuffling the deck with practiced ease. Steve was seated across from them, quieter than usual, nursing a drink and staring at his phone a little too intently.
“Alright, boys,” Bucky said, smirking as he dealt the cards. “Prepare to lose whatever dignity you have left.”
Sam snorted, reaching for his beer. “Big talk for someone who still owes me twenty bucks from last time.”
Bucky shrugged. “I’ll take it out of my poker chips tonight.”
The banter was light, the atmosphere easy—at least on the surface. But the undercurrent of tension was impossible to ignore, especially with Steve’s unusually subdued demeanor. He hadn’t laughed at Sam’s jokes, hadn’t chimed in on Bucky’s playful jabs, and his replies were clipped, almost robotic.
As the game progressed, Sam turned the conversation to safer, more personal waters. “So, Buck,” he began, his tone casual but his grin mischievous, “how’s the love life? Things going okay with your girl?”
Bucky’s face softened immediately, a boyish grin spreading across his face. “Okay?” he repeated, shaking his head. “Sam, she’s everything. She’s smart, kind, funny… she keeps me on my toes. I mean, I don’t know how I got so lucky. It’s like—” He paused, his blue eyes lighting up as he searched for the right words. “It’s like every time I look at her, I realize she’s my home, you know? She’s it for me, I hate how long it took for me to get my shit together.”
Sam let out a low whistle, leaning back with a wide smile. “Damn, Barnes. That’s the good stuff. I’m so happy for you, man.”
Bucky chuckled, clearly flustered but grateful for the encouragement. “Thanks, man. It’s about time, right?”
But while Sam’s smile remained genuine, Steve’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. His cards remained untouched in front of him as he stared at the table, his drink abandoned.
“Yup,” Steve said abruptly, his tone short and flat. “That’s great.”
Bucky’s eyes flicked to him, narrowing slightly. “You good, Stevie?”
“Yeah,” Steve said, glancing at his phone again. “Just… got some stuff on my mind.”
Before Bucky could press further, Steve stood up abruptly, grabbing his phone and shoving it into his pocket. “I gotta go somewhere.”
Sam straightened in his seat, his eyebrows furrowing. “Go where? It’s poker night.”
“Just something I gotta take care of,” Steve replied, his tone distant as he grabbed his jacket and headed for the door. “Don’t wait up.”
And just like that, he was gone, leaving Bucky and Sam staring after him, bewildered.
“What the hell was that about?” Bucky muttered, sitting back in his chair, his brows knitting together in concern.
Sam let out a nervous chuckle, running a hand over his face. “Man, I don’t know.”
Bucky’s eyes narrowed, watching Sam closely. “Alright, spill. What’s got you looking like you’re about to jump out of your skin? Is it why Steve left?”
Sam hesitated, clearly torn. “It’s not about Steve.”
“Then what is it?” Bucky pressed, his tone softening. “I know it’s not just because I’m kicking your ass at poker.”
Sam sighed heavily, setting his cards down and rubbing the back of his neck. “Alright, fine. I was gonna wait, but… I got an offer. A big one. Job-wise.”
Bucky raised an eyebrow. “That’s great, man. What’s the problem?”
Sam leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, his expression conflicted. “It’s out of town. Way out of town. Like, completely out of state. It’s a great opportunity, Buck. Better pay, more responsibility, and I’d get to work with a nonprofit I’ve been following for years. But… it means leaving all of this. Leaving you guys.”
Bucky’s expression softened as he processed Sam’s words. “Shit, Sam. That’s… big.”
“Yeah,” Sam said, laughing bitterly. “Tell me about it. I’ve been sitting on it for a week, trying to figure out if it’s the right move.”
Bucky leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “And? What’s your gut telling you?”
Sam shrugged, his shoulders heavy with uncertainty. “My gut’s telling me to go for it. But my heart? My heart’s telling me it’s gonna suck, leaving everyone behind.”
Bucky nodded slowly, his eyes steady on Sam. “Look, man. I can’t tell you what to do, but… you gotta do what’s right for you. We’ll still be here, no matter where you are.”
Sam looked up, his eyes filled with gratitude and something deeper, something almost fragile. “You mean that?”
“Of course,” Bucky said firmly. “You’ve been here for us through everything. It’s our turn to be here for you.”
Sam let out a shaky breath, nodding. “Thanks, Buck. That… that means a lot.”
Bucky grinned, clapping Sam on the shoulder. “Now, don’t think I’m gonna let you leave without kicking your ass at poker at least one more time.”
Sam laughed, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “Bring it on, Barnes. Bring it on.”
But even as the mood lightened, both of them couldn’t help but glance at the door Steve had walked through, wondering what storm might be brewing behind his quiet exit.
Tumblr media
The farmers market was its usual lively self—vendors calling out deals, the scent of fresh bread and flowers wafting through the air, and the hum of chatter everywhere. You walked arm-in-arm with Bucky, the soft brush of his hand against yours grounding you.
“Where’s Steve?” you asked, glancing around the booths for the familiar blond head.
Sam, walking ahead, glanced back over his shoulder. “Said he couldn’t make it today.”
You frowned slightly, your chest tightening at the thought. “Okay,” you murmured. “Next time.”
Natasha shrugged from beside you, but her quick glance toward Wanda betrayed her curiosity. If she had any deeper thoughts, she didn’t share them, instead wandering off toward a display of ceramics. The sight made you smile.
The group naturally splintered into pairs, each gravitating toward their favorite stalls. You and Bucky hung back, trailing through the market at a leisurely pace, his hand brushing yours every so often, an intimate yet casual connection. The weight of the locket resting against your collarbone felt comforting, grounding you to the present.
Nearby, Natasha let out a delighted squeal, holding up a small ceramic cow. “Oh my God, look at this!” she exclaimed, waving it in your direction. “It’ll go perfectly with the rooster and duck I already got Steve.”
You and Bucky exchanged amused glances, both of you laughing softly. “Nat,” you teased, walking over to her, “are you building him a farm?”
“Practically,” Sam muttered, shaking his head as he joined the conversation. “Goddamn, Nat. You’re going to have the whole barnyard at my house next.”
Natasha just grinned, holding the cow close. “Or something,” she said cryptically, turning back to the vendor to pay. Sam rolled his eyes, muttering something about barn animals under his breath as he dragged Bucky off toward the crepe stand.
Wanda busied herself at the flower stall nearby, selecting a bright bouquet of daisies and sunflowers. Meanwhile, you wandered toward the jewelry stall where the locket had been, unable to resist curiosity. You’d gotten the locket back, thanks to Steve, but you wanted to piece together the rest of the story.
“Excuse me,” you said to the vendor, offering her a polite smile. “A while ago, there was a locket here—this one.” You touched the small gold heart resting against your chest. “Do you remember it?”
The vendor’s eyes lit up as she nodded. “Oh, I remember that locket very well. My granddaughter found it at a party. She thought it was worth something and brought it to me.”
“Your granddaughter?” you echoed, your heart skipping a beat. “Who is she?”
“Her name’s Kate,” the woman said, her tone warm and fond.
You froze for a moment, blinking in surprise. “Kate?” The name felt heavy on your tongue. “Wow… small world.” you muttered
The woman nodded, her gaze flicking to the locket on your neck. “And then that sweet young man bought it. He was so determined to get it for you.”
Your heart clenched at the thought of Steve, the memory of him giving it back to you still fresh. “He did,” you said softly. “He brought it back to me. I’d lost it at a party, and… it meant a lot to me.”
The woman smiled knowingly. “He talked about you the whole time he was here. The way he spoke, you’d think the sun rose and set on you. I always wondered about the two of you, did you end up together yet?”
You didn’t know what to say, your throat tightening at the words. "No, we, I -- " Before you could fully respond, warm arms wrapped around your waist from behind, pulling you back into the present.
“Hey, doll,” Bucky murmured against your ear, his voice low and affectionate. “What’re you up to over here?”
You tilted your head to look up at him, his closeness making you smile automatically. “Just… reminiscing.”
The vendor’s eyes softened as she watched the two of you, a twinkle of understanding in her gaze. “Ah,” she said simply, her voice rich with amusement. “Now, that makes sense.”
“What makes sense?” Bucky asked, his brows knitting together as he looked between you and the woman.
“Nothing, sweetheart,” she replied with a wink. “Enjoy your day.”
Bucky’s hand rested protectively on your lower back as he guided you away, his expression puzzled. “What was that about?”
“Just a little backstory about the locket,” you said, touching it lightly. “She was telling me how her granddaughter found it at a party. Apparently, Kate brought it here.”
His brow furrowed. “Kate? Seriously? Small world.”
“Very,” you murmured, the warmth of his touch and the reassurance of his presence grounding you.
“Anyway,” he said, nudging you gently. “Sam’s probably inhaled three crepes already. We should catch up.”
You laughed, letting him lead you toward the crepe stand where Sam and Natasha were already bickering about toppings. But as you glanced back one last time at the jewelry booth, you couldn’t help but feel the weight of how everything, somehow, had come full circle.
Tumblr media
The apartment felt emptier than usual. The clock ticked past ten, and Bucky still wasn’t home. You sat on the couch, your laptop balanced on your knees, pretending to focus on some edits for work. But your eyes kept flicking to the door, your thoughts spinning.
You knew Bucky’s schedule like the back of your hand. You worked for the same company, after all. There wasn’t a meeting or late deadline you hadn’t already accounted for. So where was he?
Your phone sat untouched on the coffee table. No texts. No calls. A creeping sense of unease settled in your chest, mingling with irritation. He always let you know if he was running late—always. Until tonight.
By the time you heard his keys jangling in the lock, it was almost ten. The door opened, and there he was, his hair slightly disheveled, his shirt untucked. He looked exhausted but smiled the moment he saw you.
“Hey, darlin’,” he greeted, kicking off his boots and heading toward you.
You closed your laptop with a sharp snap, your jaw tight. “Hey?” you repeated, your voice tinged with annoyance.
Bucky’s smile faltered. “What’s wrong?”
“What’s wrong?” You stood, setting the laptop on the coffee table. “You’re two hours late, Bucky. You didn’t call. You didn’t text. I’ve been sitting here worried sick.”
He blinked, caught off guard by the intensity in your tone. “I didn’t think it was a big deal. I got caught up with uh Sam after work. We went for a drink—”
“A drink?” you interrupted, your voice rising. “You know your schedule, and you know I know it too. You could’ve told me. It’s not that hard to send a text.”
Bucky frowned, stepping closer. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize it’d be such a big deal.”
“It is a big deal,” you snapped, crossing your arms. “We’ve barely started this relationship, and you’re already pulling this?”
“Pulling what?” His voice edged with frustration now. “I’m not ‘pulling’ anything. I went for a drink with my best friend, and I’m sorry I didn’t text. But this—this feels like an overreaction.”
You recoiled slightly, his words stinging. “Overreaction?” You laughed bitterly. “You don’t get it, do you? This isn’t just about tonight, Bucky. It’s about us. About whether you actually take this seriously.”
“Seriously?” he repeated, his voice rising. “You think I’m not serious about you?”
“Well, you’re not exactly proving it right now!”
His jaw tightened, his blue eyes flashing with hurt. “Doll, you’re reading too much into this. It was one night. I didn’t think I needed to check in like I was some damn teenager.”
“Maybe you should’ve,” you fired back, your voice cracking. “Because that’s what people in relationships do, Bucky. They care enough to let the other person know what’s going on! I got scared, what if something happened to you? What if i lost you before i even had you! Or what if you dont actually want this or care about me or, or--”
The words hung heavy between you, the silence sharp and suffocating.
Bucky sighed, running a hand through his hair. “You think I don’t care about you?” he asked quietly, his voice softer now, but no less pained. “That’s what you think?”
You hesitated, your anger warring with the guilt creeping in. “I don’t know,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper. “I just… I’ve been scared, Bucky. That if something goes wrong, we’ll fall apart. That this won’t last.”
Bucky stepped closer, his expression softening as he reached for your hand. “Doll,” he murmured, his tone gentle. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel that way. I messed up tonight. I should’ve texted. You’re right. I would have been upset if you didn’t tell me either, I’m sorry”
Tears prickled at the corners of your eyes, but you blinked them away. “I just don’t want to lose you,” you said, your voice breaking. "I cant lose you”
“You won’t,” he promised, his grip on your hand tightening. “I swear. I’ll do better. I want this—us. More than anything.”
For a moment, you just stared at each other, the tension slowly melting under the weight of his sincerity. Then, before you could overthink it, you surged forward, your lips crashing into his.
Bucky responded instantly, his arms wrapping around you and pulling you flush against him. The kiss was desperate and heated, years of pent-up longing pouring out all at once. His hands roamed your back, his fingers digging into your skin as if grounding himself in you.
You pulled back slightly, breathless, your hands cupping his face. “You’re not allowed to scare me like that again,” you whispered.
“Never,” he vowed, his voice husky. He kissed you again, his lips trailing down your neck, his breath warm against your skin.
The two of you stumbled toward the couch, his hands tugging at the hem of your shirt. “I just can’t keep my hands off you,” he murmured, his lips brushing your jawline.
You laughed softly, tilting your head to give him better access. “Remember,” you teased, “you’re the one who wanted to take things slow.”
Bucky pulled back slightly, his lips curling into a smirk. “Maybe I’ve changed my mind.”
You grinned, tugging him back down for another kiss. But before things could go any further, your phone buzzed loudly on the coffee table, breaking the moment.
You groaned, burying your face in his chest. “Of course.”
Bucky chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “It’s for the best,” he said, though his darkened eyes betrayed just how badly he wanted to ignore it.
You looked up at him, arching a brow. “How long are you going to make me wait, Barnes?”
His lips twitched into a smile as he leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. “Soon, doll,” he promised. “No one wants this more than me. But I want to do it right.”
You sighed, nodding. “Okay. But don’t keep me waiting too long.”
“Never,” he said, standing and pulling you up with him. “Now get that pretty ass up. I brought dinner.”
You laughed, swatting his arm as he grabbed his phone. “Also,” he added with a smirk, “next time I’m late, just spam me like Wanda spams the group chat.”
You rolled your eyes, but the warmth in your chest told you everything would be just fine.
Tumblr media
You sit across from Sam, your lunch tray untouched as he stirs his soup absentmindedly. You notice he’s quieter than usual, a far cry from his typical animated self.
“So,” you start, trying to break the silence, “are you going to tell me what’s got you looking like you lost your best friend, or am I supposed to guess?”
Sam chuckles softly, but the sound lacks its usual warmth. He sets his spoon down and leans back in his chair, meeting your curious gaze. “I wanted to tell you first. I mean, out of the whole group.”
Your stomach tightens at his serious tone. “Tell me what?”
He hesitates for a moment before taking a deep breath. “I got a promotion.”
The words take a moment to sink in, and when they do, your face lights up. “Sam, that’s amazing! Why do you look like someone kicked your dog? This is huge!”
“It is,” he agrees, his smile faltering. “But there’s a catch. The position is… halfway across the country. I’d have to move.”
Your heart sinks. “Oh.” The excitement in your voice fades, replaced by a bittersweet pang in your chest. “When?”
“In a couple of weeks, maybe less,” he admits, rubbing the back of his neck. “That’s why I’ve been so MIA this week. I’ve been at the VA, getting all the logistics sorted out.”
You nod slowly, the news settling heavily over you. “Wow. That’s… a lot to process. But Sam,” you say, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand, “this is incredible. I’m so proud of you. You’ve worked so hard for this.”
He smiles, his eyes softening. “Thanks. It means a lot to hear that from you.”
A thought flickers in your mind, something not quite adding up. “Wait,” you say cautiously. “You’ve been at the VA all week?”
Sam nods. “Yeah, pretty much. I haven’t seen anyone. You’re the first person I’ve had time to sit down with.”
Confusion twists in your stomach. “You didn’t see Bucky?” you ask slowly.
He frowns. “No. Why?”
You pause, debating whether to bring it up. “He told me he went out for a drink with you the other night,” you say carefully.
Sam’s eyebrows lift in surprise before he shakes his head. “Nope, not me. I mean, maybe he went with someone else, but it wasn’t me.”
You try to push down the unease creeping into your chest. Bucky lying to you? It doesn’t make sense. But you decide to tuck the thought away for now.
“So, who else knows about your promotion?” you ask, steering the conversation back.
“Bucky,” Sam admits with a small grin. “He found out on guys’ night. But don’t be mad at him. I made him promise not to say anything until I was ready.”
“Of course I’m not mad,” you say quickly. “I get it. It’s your news to share, not his.”
Sam looks relieved and leans forward, his expression soft. “I’m gonna miss this, you know. Just hanging out with you, laughing about dumb stuff. You’ve been one of my closest friends for years.”
“Don’t get all sappy on me now,” you tease, though your throat tightens with emotion. “We’re not getting rid of you that easily. You’ll visit, right?”
“Of course,” he says firmly. “And you better come visit me, too. I expect postcards, care packages, the whole deal.”
You laugh, but the weight of the news still lingers in the air. As you finish your lunch, you can’t shake the feeling that something’s off. But for now, you focus on Sam, determined to make the most of the time you have left with him.

[prologue]
──────────────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────────────────
Dear Diary,
I'm leaving. I'm leaving this godforsaken house - I'm probably going to sneak off during my next mission. It's a solo mission, though I think it's just a ploy from "Mother" to get rid of me. My left leg is still injured and the Doctor says I may never fully recover, I have a barely noticeable limp, but anything short of perfection is frowned upon in the House of the Hearth (of course it is; the "Marelle" games should be enough of an indicator).
I don't know why either, I've been good - though perhaps she doesn't approve of the friendship Clervie and I have forged (not that she has any motherly rights to decide that). Or perhaps with Peruere - she is probably the next "King", with the highest potential or whatnot.
I'm scared to leave as well, just the idea of leaving is heavily frowned upon and is punishable with death. Even if I don't die on the mission, if I am caught, I will die. I'm not sure if even Archon's can tell me what happened to the other's who tried to leave. "Mother" keeps a strict tab on everyone and who knows what in the house. Any secrets being spilled… I pray for them. I pray for mercy, because I know the Doctor has none.
I'm scared to leave, scared about the future too. I don't know how to leave when this house is almost all that I remember. "Mother" clothed me, fed me and has given me a roof over my head. No matter how hard I had to work for it, I was given a shelter. It scares me that I don't hate this place as much as you would expect me to… It scares me to leave everything I know and all the people I cherish for this.
The battle for "King" starts soon, I probably won't be around for it. I'll either be long gone or dead, if the mission from mother goes according to my plan, I'll be on my way to Sumeru. If it doesn't… then I suppose mother's plan to get rid of me would have succeeded (archon's know I am not in mission ready condition).
I know its selfish to leave Clervie and Peruere but I cannot stay. I will die. Perhaps I could have stayed in another time or another universe where this "orphanage" didn't exist.
I'm leaving them a letter, but I have planned to make it look like I have died, or imply it, at least then I won't be the villain in their eyes for abandoning them here to suffer at the hands of "Mother". Painfully Hopefully, we will never cross paths and I will never have to explain myself. I'm not sure if they would understand.
I don't know how to live with myself anymore, not with the things the house has made us do. We are children and… I miss my family. I see glimpses of them in my dreams and memories - it was so warm. It had actually felt like a home. I think I had an older sister and a younger brother but I cannot clearly remember. I wonder what happened to them (if they even exist). I hope that I could have had that in another universe, but alas, I cannot in this one.
──────────────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────────────────
[there is a letter left to Clervie and Peruere, hidden in a spot only the three of you know about]
Hi Clervie and Peruere,
It's me, I'm sure you know my writing by now and I'm sorry that I cannot see both of you one last time. I'm leaving on my mission and I will likely not return. "Mother" plans for me to die - I know it so because I am not currently mission ready and she's been sending me on so many. I'm barely pulling through as it is and I don't think I will make it back from this one.
I will miss both of you and I'm sorry it will end this way.
I will miss watching the sunrise with you, Clervie, and I hope that you see the aurora you so wish to see one day. I'm… sorry that it has come to this and I hope you continue going to watch the sun bleed orange-red in the sky and turn the horizon into a mix of orange and purple and pink (like your hair!).
Peruere… I will miss our shared love for insects. I left you some sketches I made of Bambi. I will miss our walks in the garden trying to insect-watch and then having to hide when our caretakers come looking for us. I really did enjoy them.
[in the same envelope, there are some old sketches of the spider - several sheets of the insect in several positions and all carefully drawn and the pages carefully preserved]
I'm sorry. [next to it is a scribbled out line, too scribbled to even make out what the words mean]
[the letter is only read by one of the people its addressed to before it is thrown into the fireplace and turns to ash]

Dear Diary,
I heard Clervie died through the grapevine. I don't know what happened and I hope Peruere is doing alright. I only know she died in the battle for "King".
I don't know how to unpack this yet.
I'm scared
I thought I could maybe see them in the future. I don't know how to live knowing one of us will never get to grow up. It hurts so much. It hurts so much more than I thought this would...

Dear Diary,
I got into the Sumeru Akademiya - under the Darshan Amurta and it specialises in biology. Particularly, I'm going to study insects! Which is probably more accurately called Entomology.
There's a new harbinger, Arlecchino. I don't know who that is, but I hear they are the new head of the House. "Mother" is dead. I hear the house has been taken over by a new "Father". I pray for the children each night. I hope the "Father" is nicer but the archon's know that is a stretch too far past reality. "Mother"… The Doctor… All the harbingers do is hurt and hurt.
I know first hand what both "Mother" and the Doctor does. Sometimes I wonder how they live with themselves. Perhaps both of them are crazy.
Perhaps it should satisfy me, that the person who tormented me and all the children is gone but there is none. It feels hollow and as terrible as it sounds, I… miss the house. It wasn't home, no, but there was some semblance of family, forged through sheer fear and understanding. I suppose it stops no one in the battle for King, it stops no one for the battle of recognition and the sheer desperation to survive.
But we all know why we do it.
I suppose we all understand. Understand enough to die without hatred. I wonder if Clervie felt the same. I hope her death was swift and as painless as possible. Archon's have mercy on her soul.
I've changed since the last time, I've changed my hairstyle and hopefully no one will recognise me. My injuries have been progressing well as well and my limp is almost gone. There's still the stress that weighs on me that someone will recognise me. I fear that someone from the Fatui recognises me - especially when they have their claws in every nation.

Dear Diary,
I'm going back to Fontaine. There has been an exchange in between both the Akademiya and the Fontaine Research Institute so I'll be going to study the Subdetection Units. They are these small units created by the Institute that monitors all sorts of environment data. It is extremely interesting and I wonder exactly what the units can record. Not only that but they are in the shape of insects!
I think these units are interesting and with some tweaking, it could be possible to track even more data from them. Particularly, underwater. These could also possibly monitor the area by the Fortress Meropide for escapees- The possibilities feel rather endless and I am probably being too ambitious, especially with little knowledge in the engineering behind these specific units.

Dear Diary,
I think I saw her again today.

I have a request for when you have time and only if you vibe with it haha
How about: Mona, somewhat tall, dark hair, light blue eyes, loves a tattoo when she can afford it, loves jewellery (fingers full of rings, chokers). She's been friends with the band for a while, can be a bit shy but fun and lovely to be around. She's gotten out of her first relationship a while ago, one where she never felt really appreciated or loved and the other person didn't really bother with her enjoyment during sex ever, so much that she wondered if sex just wasn't for her. But Noah, oh Noah, doesn't even need to do much but she feels hot and bothered. So what if Noah finds out and vows to provide her with an amazing experience, finding out she's actually quite kinky along the way. The kinks are up to you if you'd like I'll love it all haha. Maybe they're also in love with each other and just realising it now, maybe it's just a fwb situation, completely up to you, I can't wait to see what you'll come up with, your writing is amazing! 💜💜
Something light and easy, just for funsies. ☺️ After Writing Notes: This was fun. I enjoyed having something more lighthearted. Hopefully it is what you were hoping for.
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: smut, dirty talk, kink (nothing too wild), oral sex (both receiving)

"This had better be good if you're calling me at six in the morning..."
I rubbed my eyes, my deep frustrations seeping out in my words.
"It is!" I huffed, waiting for him to continue. "We're home!"
I raised an eyebrow. "I'd hope so. You've been on the road for like...three days?"
"Right, but we're home! And we want to go get breakfast!"
Still failing to see what any of that had to do with me, I tossed my arm over my face. "So...do that?"
"Okay, so you'll meet us there?"
"I beg your pardon?" I opened my eyes, knitting my eyebrows together.
"You'll meet us at Reggie's?"
I growled into the receiver. "You're out of your God damn mind if you think I'm getting out of bed anytime before ten, Nick."
"C'mon Mona! We talked about getting together as soon as we got home!"
"Uh, yeah, I figured that meant after you had taken some time to fucking recover!"
He giggled. "We're all caffeinated and hungry. Thought it would be a good time!"
"It's not."
"I'm buying!"
"I'd rather die."
"Too bad. Get dressed and meet us in an hour, please!"
Opening my mouth to protest, I felt the line go dead.
There were moments I truly regretted being friends with Nick Folio. He was a morning person.
Lifting my head off of the bed, I scrunched up my nose and pouted for a moment, gathering enough of my bearings to pull my legs off the side and stood up.
My arms reached over my head, my spine cracking and stretching. I walked over to the kitchen, pulled the refrigerator open and yanked the iced coffee from the shelf. Quickly, I mixed myself a beverage and drank half of it in three solid gulps.
Once the caffeine began burning it's way through me, I drug myself into the bathroom and stared at my reflection.
Well, it could be worse, right?
My icy blue eyes were only so puffy today, my hair freshly washed the night before. My shirt was clean as well, which was an improvement over the last couple of weeks.
I hadn't mentioned to any of the guys that I had been moping for the last two weeks straight. Sixteen days, more specifically.
Since Vinny decided he 'wasn't ready for a committed relationship'. Aside from being devastated, I also found it interesting given we had been dating for over a fucking year.
Fucking producers, man. Snakes - every last one.
I was blindsided by the breakup, and I had let myself feel it full force. My method was to be in pain, depressed, and disgusting for as long as it took for the heartbreak to fade away. If that meant not leaving the house, barely eating, and showering every three days, then so be it.
I did, however, know the boys would be home today, and had to prepare for that. My best friends for a good nine years now, I knew there was no getting out of seeing them as soon as they touched ground in California. I maybe expected a little more time to sleep in, but not much.
It was too early to care about appearances, so I brushed through my dark, chocolate-toned mess of hair and tossed it into a messy ponytail. I pulled my favorite band t-shirt over my head, a Bring Me shirt I got back at Warped Tour in 2012, and slipped into a pair of plain black leggings. My flip-flops would have to do, as I had no desire to hunt down two socks, let alone matching ones.
When I locked my front door, I winced at my nails. I had been biting and pulling at my cuticles for days without even realizing. I needed to get acrylics ASAP. I made a mental note to see if the nail salon had any openings after breakfast.
My deeply tinted sunglasses hid my eyes from the outside world. I hadn't bothered with any makeup this morning, not having the time nor the patience for it.
I hummed idly to my music as I drove the short ten minutes to Reggie's Diner, zoning out mostly. I pulled into the space in front, noticing none of their vehicles were there yet.
Of course.
Fucker wakes me up early, pulls me from the hole I had crawled into, and doesn't even show up on time. How predictable. I pulled a foot up onto the seat, balancing my chin on my knee while I waited.
The music streamed through my speakers, and the lyrics hit me in the chest.
"I guess this is goodbye. I guess we got what we deserved. Hold on to your heart, it's almost over."
"Ugh." I turned the volume down to zero, not wanting those kinds of emotions sinking in.
Before I could dwell too long, a loud, sharp knock came on my window, and I jumped nearly a foot in the air.
Standing in my driver's side window, Folio was pressing his forehead against the glass, making cross-eyed faces. I turned to the windshield, where Nicholas was lifting his shirt up to flash me. Jolly stood next to him, rubbing a palm over his friend's bare stomach, thrusting his hips like a complete moron. To my right, Noah stood at the opposing window, mouth pressed against the glass, puffing out his cheeks.
Tears nearly welled in my eyes at the absolute absurdity of these idiots. God, I fucking missed them.
I scanned the menu for no reason at all, already knowing exactly what I planned to order.
"French toast and an over easy egg, right?" Noah's elbow bumped me, his own menu open in front of him.
I pursed my lips. "No, I actually thought I'd get the waffles with bacon this time."
"Yeah?" He raised an eyebrow, and I cracked a smile.
"Nah, I'm getting French toast."
He snickered, nodding his head. "You always do."
"Yeah, well you always get raspberry lemonade so..."
"What's wrong with lemonade?!" He dropped his menu, eyes scanning me.
"Nothing." He huffed, narrowing his eyes. "Raspberry lemonade though?"
He opened his mouth to retort, but we were interrupted by the waiter. Each taking turns placing our orders, Noah went last, ordering a peach lemonade. I rolled my eyes, and folded my arms on the table, listening to them idly chat.
"I have a feeling that once I get food in me, I'm going to nap for at least eight hours." Jolly chuckled, fiddling with the salt shaker.
"Dude, me too. I think I'm just running on hopes and dreams right now." Nicholas added.
"How was the drive from New York?"
They all groaned in unison. "Fucking long." Folio commented.
"It felt like we were driving through Colorado for a fucking year." Noah tossed his head back.
I bumped him with my shoulder at his theatrics. "Your guys' bus is so bougie, it couldn't have been so bad."
"Once you've been in it for months like we have?" He raised an eyebrow at me. "I never want to see another tour bus again."
They all nodded together, affirming noises under their breaths.
"Don't you leave for the second leg of the tour in, like, eight weeks?"
There was a beat of silence before they all cackled. "Fuck, dude. Don't remind me!" Folio dropped his face in his hands.
Everyone fell into side conversations as we waited for our food. I was listening to Folio tell me about the people he had the opportunity to meet while they were traveling, but I felt my mind wandering, my eyes following, eventually settling on Noah.
Somehow, since I had last seen him three months ago, he managed to get even more muscular. His arms were bigger, and his hair was slightly longer than it was before he left. He had a fresh tattoo on the small patch of open skin on his upper arm, ink still vibrant. He was listening to Jolly, smiling at whatever he was telling him that was so entertaining.
"Mona?" It occurred to me that I missed what Folio was saying to me.
"Huh?" I looked back at him. "Repeat that?"
He smirked. "Space cadet?"
I rolled my eyes. "It's early." He mimicked me, rolling his eyes as well. "What did you ask?"
"I said, how's Vinny?"
My heart sunk, and the lump that I had just managed to swallow reformed in my throat. My face must have given something away, because the entire table fell silent.
"Oh, Vinny..." My stare fell down to my plate, pushing what was left of my French toast around. "He's fine."
Nick lowered his face so he could force me to meet his eyes.
"Everything okay?"
I nodded, biting my lip and trying like hell to smile. "Yeah, all good."
"That's not believable." Nicholas spoke up, pointing a finger at me. The glare I shot at him could’ve sliced right through his skin, had he not deflected with his own. “Care to explain?”
I set my fork down, folding my hands in my lap and folding my shoulders in. I could feel Noah leaning just a fraction closer to me, and my skin was warm where I felt his hoodie pressing against me.
“I don’t, actually. Thank you, though!” I tried to sound as chipper as possible, but it was falling on deaf ears. These morons knew me better than anyone.
“You guys fighting or something?” Jolly piped up between bites of hash.
I shook my head. “Nope.” Dismissive was not a skill I possessed.
“Do I need to fuck him up?” Folio did his best to look intimidating, and this made me cackle.
“No, Nick. No need.”
A bump to my arm made my eyes glance up at Noah, his face concerned. “What’s goin’ on, Mona?”
What was it about that fool that made me crumble like clay?
I sighed hard, leaning back in my chair, and averting my eyes to my plate, fingers now fiddling with my napkin. I could tell they were all looking at me, and it was a heavy feeling.
“Vinny broke it off.”
I don’t think I’ve seen four jaws fall at once before, but there’s a first for everything. I felt Noah tense up next to me, and it took all I had not to lean into him. He didn’t need to be fazed, it wasn’t a big deal…right?
“The fuck?!” Nicholas dropped his fork on his plate. “Why?”
I shrugged in response, pursing my lips. “Who knows.”
“Kicking his ass sounds pretty good, now.” Noah’s words were meant to be humorous, I’m sure. But his tone said otherwise, low and venomous.
When I chanced a look up at him, his eyes were narrowed into dangerous slits, focused on me. My hand gripped his arm, squeezing gently.
“It’s really no big deal, guys. Just wasn’t meant to be.”
“He didn’t give you a reason?” Folio sounded more concerned than angry.
I groaned, leaning my elbows on the table and rubbing my eyes. “Fuck, I guess? He said he wasn’t ready to commit or some bullshit.”
I heard at least two of them suck their teeth in disapproval.
“What horse shit. You guys were together a year.” Jolly wiped his mouth on his napkin.
“It was over a year.” I said, my voice small.
“Didn’t he ask you to move in with him like, three months ago?” Noah sounded like he was in disbelief.
“He did. I turned him down because I was afraid of something like this happening.”
“Mona?” My eyes fell on Folio, his hand now on my shoulder. “When did this happen?”
My face fell, then. I knew they weren’t going to like my answer.
“Like…” I took a breath. “Two and a half weeks ago?”
“What?!” Yep, about what I expected. “Mona! Why didn’t you tell me?” Nick was nearly out of his chair.
“Why would I?” I tried not to look at him, but I knew he was burning a hole in my face.
“Oh fuck, I don’t know.” He scrubbed a hand over his mouth. “Maybe because we’re your best friends!”
I rolled my eyes. “Who were on tour! You guys didn’t need my petty drama while you were working.”
Noah scoffed, turning his body toward me. “And we could’ve just brought you out to finish tour with us.” He glanced around the table, silent agreement from the other guys. “It’s not like we haven’t before.”
He had taken my hands, which felt so tiny in his huge grip. I couldn’t help but smile at him, and then at the rest of them.
“Guys, as amazing as you all are,” I pointedly looked at each of them. “I’m a big girl, and I don’t need my boys coming to my rescue over a little heartbreak.”
Noah’s fingers squeezed me, bringing my attention back to him. “We know that, but we like doing it. So next time, tell us, okay?”
I leaned my face into his chest, his arms circling me in a tight hug. I smiled, feeling safer than I had before they left. When he released me, I smiled at them.
“I love you guys.”
“Mona!” I turned, my keys in hand to unlock my car. Noah was jogging in my direction, the rest of the guys already in their own ride.
“What’s up?”
He stopped in front of me, looking almost like he was losing nerve the longer he stared at me. He tucked his hands in his sweater pocket, now smiling at me sheepishly.
“I just wanted to know, do you have plans today?”
I raised an eyebrow at him. “Uh, just going to get my nails done. Might grab some groceries later. That’s it, though.”
He nodded, kicking his shoe against the asphalt. “Okay, think you’d want to see a movie later?”
This wasn’t out of the ordinary. I had my designated activity that I typically did with each of the guys.
Jolly was a ‘go out to a fine dining restaurant’ type of guy, so he would take us out at least once a month to a new place, and we would spend the evening critiquing the food and atmosphere - as if either of us had any right. It was hilarious.
Nicholas, being the tattoo artist he was, loved the days I took the time to spend in the shop, helping him clean up and hang out. He had very little time to tattoo these days, and when he did, his books were full. I would sit with him, help him sketch, and bring food to the shop. He usually gave me little bangers here and there while we had time, and it helped my tattoo addiction, and my budget, tremendously.
Nick, unsurprisingly, was the nature freak. Luckily for him, I loved to fish. We’d hop on his bike when the weather was right, and head up to Big Bear a few times a year, or hit the piers for saltwater fishing. I never caught much, but he always told the other guys I did.
Noah, however, was a movie guy. Horror, sci-fi, comedy, didn’t matter. If it was in a theater, he wanted to see it. I was all for that. I had a serious affinity for popcorn, and loved to listen to him whisper to me during the movie, or bitch about it on the drive home. Maybe I enjoyed the occasions where I got chilly, and he let me wear his sweater? Or maybe I just liked being alone with him?
When I first met the boys, Noah had instantly stuck out differently than the rest of them. He was stunning, reserved, funny, and glowed like the sun. He had a smile that made my knees buckle and a hug that could swallow me whole. Voice of a siren and talent like none other.
Of course, I had an immediate crush on him.
Something about the way he spoke gave me such pause, my ears yearning to hear every word, hanging on them as they came out. The way he moved, gestured, breathed...it made my skin tingle.
However, when Noah and I met all those years ago, he had a girlfriend. It was disappointing - to say the least - but I respected it, and continued on as his best friend. I put the feelings to bed, and accepted the group of four misfits into my life without hesitation, arms open. Did the feelings eventually relax? Sure.
Something I appreciated about mine and Noah's situation was that I had the opportunity to get to know him better than I ever would have, had we entered into any kind of relationship. I saw him at his very best, but also at his lowest depths. I watched him free fall through his depression. Held his hand while he fought through the shadows within his own mind.
Noah, like myself, had a dark and violent past, so we were always closer. The guys constantly made comments about it, saying we were kindred spirits, begging to be together. It was all very Shakespeare, and we typically brushed it off. We laughed at their silly jokes...but over the years, there had been more than a few long and awkward stares between us.
He never told me he had feelings for me. The words never left his mouth. But did he walk with his arm around me sometimes? Hold my hand at the scariest parts of the movies? Bring me snacks and nap with me when I was sick?
Every. Time.
Until Vinny.
Once Vinny came into the picture, Noah had to take a step back. He had been single for three years - me for four. He had ample time to make some kind of move. He never did. So we sat in comfortable solace. And then Vinny came in, swept me up, and 'ran off with me', as Noah put it. He was upset, but would never admit it. Our movie dates stopped. Sick days were cancelled. And my shoulders were always so cold...
Over a year, Noah and I had been as platonic as brother and sister. It was painful at first, but I think we both got used to it. We hadn't seen a movie together in fifteen months...
"Mona?"
I was pulled from my thoughts and brought back to a very sheepish looking Noah, who looked as though he was about to tell me to forget it.
"Yes! Of course I'll go to the movies with you!" Maybe that came out a little too excited.
It was worth it, however, to see the way his face lit up. "Yeah?" He nodded, hiding his teeth in his smile. "Alright, cool."
I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to hide my own enthusiasm. "What're we going to see?"
"Tarot is out, have you heard of it?"
My eyes deadpanned at him. "Looked terrifying."
"Perfect!" He turned to walk away. "I'll look up showtimes?"
I shook my head. "Just pick me up at nine? We'll figure it out from there?"
This made him smirk. "You got it." He began walking back toward his brothers, and I turned to my car door. "Oh!"
I whipped back around.
"Do you need me to bring you a sweatshirt?"
I felt the warmth pool in my gut. Oh, the game was so on.
"Nah." I waved a hand at him. "Yours will do."
-
Was this a date? It wasn't. I was sure it wasn't. It couldn't have been. Not possible. We were best friends. I was reading into this.
Noah had seen me with strep throat. Bought me tampons. Held my hair back while I vomited. There was no way he had feelings for me. He probably viewed me as his gross younger sister. Or his weird cousin who stole his clothes a lot. There was no way.
But I still found myself dialing Nick, staring down at my two outfit options, chewing the skin of my lip to a pulp waiting for him to answer. It took three back-to-back calls before his groggy voice mumbled into the line.
"I'm sleeping."
I rolled my eyes. "I need your help."
"Mona, I'm tired."
"Yeah, well, I was tired at six this morning. Sucks to suck. I need your help." I was now actively pacing my bedroom.
"Ugh, hang on." I could hear him moving around, likely sitting up in bed. A loud groan came on the other end. Stretching. "Alright, whose dying?"
"Nick, I don't know if this is a date."
He spoke through a yawn. "Your thing with Noah? You guys used to always do that shit."
I scoffed. "That was before."
"Before...what?" I could hear the sound of a door opening, and then closing.
"Before," I took a second, but wasn't even certain of what I was thinking anymore. I growled. "just before!"
"Well, that makes a lot of sense, huh?"
I could hear his voice echoing, and then the sound of water running. Wait...not water...
"Are you pissing on the phone with me, you freak?!"
He chuckled at that, still sounding exhausted. "You wake me up? You deal with the consequences."
I made a noise of disgust. "Wash your hands before we finish this conversation."
I could hear the sink running, and then he picked the phone back up.
"I honestly don't get what you're freaking out about, dude."
"Of course you don't get it. You're a cool, nonchalant, unbothered dude! Whereas I'm over here thinking way too much into this and having an anxiety attack!"
"Alright, alright. Calm down." He huffed back down onto his bed. "Talk me through it."
"Okay." I took a deep breath, turning to look at my bed. "I don't know what to wear. Usually, during movie nights with Noah, I wear sweats and a baggy t-shirt. I like to be comfy in the theater, especially since he takes us to the ones with the...uh..." I snapped to think of the word. "recliners! The chairs that lean back? So do I just go with normal attire? Or, do I dress up nicer? Show him I'm interested in this being more than just a typical movie date? Show off a little? Will that give him the wrong impression? Will he think I'm trying too hard? But if I bum it out, will he think I'm a slob and have let myself go since the breakup? I don't know what to do. Don't even get me started on makeup."
"Holy fuck dude, you are freaking out."
My heart was racing at the rate my mouth was moving, but Folio's voice made me snap my jaw shut. I only talked that fast when I was losing my mind.
"Listen," He breathed loudly, likely sinking back down into his pillows. "I get why you're nervous. But this is Noah."
I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "I'm aware."
"So that means, the beauty about going on a date with him is that he knows you better than anyone. Even me. So you can be yourself."
"It's a date."
"No shit. Noah has been pining over you since the day you both met. Wouldn't shut up about going to the movies with you all day. It's a date."
All of the blood drained from my face. "Oh."
My heart had froze. Thinking it to myself was one thing, but to hear someone else say it...
"Don't start spiraling. This has been almost a decade in the making. It's going to go fine. Just be you. Wear your comfy clothes. No makeup. Hair loose. You're stupid cute like that."
I felt my cheeks heat up. "Nick, knock it off."
He snickered. "Listen, babe. I may not be the one in love with you, but I can appreciate a fox when I see one."
I almost dropped the phone as my stomach lurched. "You said what just now?!"
Realizing his error, Nick's voice jumped several octaves. "No! No no no! I didn't mean it like that! It's a figure of speech!"
I felt my chest tighten. "Oh fuck..."
"Nope. Mona, listen to me! I was just using the phrase to prove a point! He's not in love with you!"
"He's not?"
"No, I mean...he is...well, he's never..." I could feel the vein in my neck threatening to burst. "Shit."
I sat on my bed, wiping my now damp palms on my pant legs.
"Listen, don't listen to me. I'm half asleep and I smoked before I went to bed, so I'm still a little faded. Just..." He took a hard breath. "Just be you, Mona. Regardless of how deep he feels for you, I know he's excited to just hang with you. He's kept you at arms length for over a year, out of respect. Now that he's allowed to get close again," I could hear the smirk in his voice. "I'm not sure he'll let you get too far anymore."
Something about that calmed me. That's why I called Folio. Despite my near-stroke, he knew how to talk me off of pretty much any ledge that I found myself inching toward.
"Okay. So comfy clothes, hair down, no makeup?"
"Right. But wear your jewelry."
My eyebrow raised in curiosity. "Yeah?"
"You know those rings you wear? And the choker? He thinks they're sexy."
I waited impatiently at the bottom of the apartment building, fingers pulling at the long sleeves of my shirt. Although I fully intended to snitch his hoodie, it was still too brisk to go completely unprotected.
His truck pulled up at five till nine, right on time. I hopped into the passenger's side easily, and cherished the familiar smell of him. I missed it something awful.
"Hey!" I looked over at him. Clearly, he had the same idea as I did, wearing his joggers, plain black hoodie, and his hair still wet from a shower. He looked so clean...edible. My mouth watered at the idea.
"Hey!" He reached over to pull me into a half-hug, letting his hand linger on my arm. His eyes glanced over me, lingering maybe a second or two longer on my neck. My black 90s style choker sat tight on my skin. He ran his fingers down my arm to my hand, running his thumb over the stone of the ring on my index finger.
Thank you, Folio.
"Multiplex has a showtime in thirty minutes?"
I smiled brightly. "Perfect!"
The drive was short, and we were bounding into the building, arm in arm, same as always. "We're getting popcorn?"
He smirked. "And candy."
After obtaining our goodies, we made our way into the theater, finding our seats. Before he leaned his back, he shrugged out of his sweater, dropping it in my lap. I looked over at him, and he only threw a wink at me. I slipped it on easily, sinking deep into the fabric.
The movie was scary...but it wasn't great. The story was very over-done. Teenagers in a place they shouldn't be. Fucking with stuff they shouldn't be. End up cursed and killed one by one.
Sounds like Evil Dead, right? Nope.
Cabin In The Woods? Nope.
Talk To Me? Nope.
Tarot, ladies and gentlemen.
I would admit, the jump scares would get me. During the first one, where the priestess jumps at the girl in the attic, I physically jumped, which caused Noah to grab my hand, and physically pull me into his side. I hid my face under the sleeve of the sweater, only watching from the top of my field of vision. The next jump, I nearly scrambled into his lap. He laughed at me for that.
By the final jump scare, I wasn't watching the movie anymore. My legs were over his lap, and his hand was tracing up and down my back. My ear pressed to his chest, I could hear his heart beating fast. Although he continued to watch the movie, laughing at the deaths, and chewing popcorn, I could tell Noah was just as nervous as I.
During one particularly horrific scene where a girl was being sawed in half...alive...I had to turn my face away from the screen.
"It's alright, they're barely showing anything." He whispered into my hair.
"You know I have a thing about being cut up alive." It gave me the creeps. Nightmare-fuel.
He chuckled. "I'll tell you when you can look."
The moment lasted far too long, the girl’s screams ringing in my ears as my fingers clutched at his shirt. After the scene had flipped, I let my body relax.
"It's over, baby."
The word.
He never called me that.
Mona. Mo'. Babes. Darling. Lady. Rick (Don't ask).
But 'baby'?
Never. Not once.
I pulled my face away from the soft cotton of his shirt, and instead of looking at the screen, I stared at him. Face lit by the lights of the movie flashing, I could see his eyes staring back down at me.
I couldn't have imagined the energy change. The voices in the background faded into a dull blur, not interesting me enough to see anything but him.
His lips were shiny, as if he had licked them. Maybe it was the butter from the popcorn.
I didn't care, because in that moment, they were mine for the taking.
Without any forethought, I grabbed his face, and pressed my mouth to his, feeling how soft his lips were. God, I had been missing out.
His arms tightened around me, leaning down to press himself against my body. His tongue pressed into my mouth, and my eyes rolled back behind my lids. I breathed into him, letting him feel everything I had been holding back for almost a decade.
Oh wow. Noah. It was always Noah.
Something inside my soul woke up. Something in my brain sparked to life and roared like a once-dead battery recharged.
Noah was it. He was what I was missing.
When we finally disconnected, his eyes looked about as blown as mine, breathing heavily. I just let my lips crack in a smile, my hand catching in his hair and knitting into the loose strands.
Our beautiful, incredible moment, was interrupted suddenly by a bright light flashing directly in our eyes. We looked over at the source, seeing a worker stood, flashlight pointed at us.
"Guys," He walked closer, voice hushed. "I get this movie is rated R, but you've got to go somewhere else to do all of that."
I sunk back into my seat, and Noah did the same. We both blushed hard, looking at each other, and giggling in embarrassment. We finished the last of the forgettable film in our respective chairs, our fingers still interlaced on the arm rests.
"Your aim sucks." His finger picked up the M&M out of his lap, and I narrowed my eyes at him.
"Yours is no better, dork." I giggled as I popped one in my mouth.
The overlook of the city lights glittered beside us, below the hill we parked on. The hatch of Noah's Navigator popped open, we sat in the back across from each other.
Since leaving the theater, we hadn't had any physical contact. I'm almost certain we were both too nervous. I wasn't sure how to get that magic back, but going home and parting company sounded torturous, so I recommended we go back to our spot.
It was customary to park here, just up the road from his house, secluded and quiet. We usually sat and debriefed the film we had just watched, but that didn't take long. We both agreed it was too stereotypical, agreeing it was only a 4/10.
After that, I recommended we play twenty questions...to stall, of course.
"It's your turn, punk."
I rolled the candy around in my mouth, and pursed my lips. "Mkay." I thought for a moment. "How many girls did you sleep with on this last tour?"
I wasn't sure when the questions turned dirty, but he seemed unfazed by it.
"Two. But they were meh." He poised his hand to toss another chocolate, and I opened my mouth.
"Yeah? Not the best?"
The candy missed and struck my nose, which I caught in my hand when it fell.
"Pretty much."
I nodded, ignoring the pull I felt in my stomach. I had nothing to be bothered by, so I ignored it.
"Your turn."
"Mm," He tossed another candy, making it onto my tongue this time. "What's your favorite position?"
I chuckled. "That's so stupid."
"Why?"
"Because, how many are there?"
He leaned against the siding of the truck, putting a handful of M&Ms in his mouth. "Kama Sutra says there's over a hundred."
I shook my head, giggling. "Well, I don't really have a favorite."
He rolled his eyes. "Everyone has their favorite."
"What's yours then?"
"Nope." He held up a finger. "Not your turn."
I shrugged. "Fine." I mulled it over for a moment, looking out at the lights. "Probably cowgirl. I'm old-fashioned."
He eyed me, as if he was suspicious. "Hmm," Popping the last candy in his mouth, he crumpled the bag in his hand. "I don't believe you."
"Why not?"
"It's too boring."
I raised my eyebrows. "You think I'm boring?"
He laughed. "No, I'm saying I don't believe you are."
"Because...?"
He shrugged then, almost looking cautious. After a moment, he pulled his knees up, resting his arms on them and interlocking his fingers. "I overheard Vinny talking once. He said you were a real freak in bed."
Something about that made my spine straighten and my blood run cold.
"Did he now?" My eyes were glaring at him.
He didn't falter. "He did. And I almost knocked his teeth in, but I don't doubt it."
"Why is that?"
His lips turned up in a small smile. "I just have a feeling."
His tone was menacing, and something about it made me swallow hard. I was caught between feeling mortified and turned on. Noah was always so relaxed and collected. I had never seen him look so...hungry.
"And you?"
"Me, what?"
Matching his energy, I sat up and leaned back on my arms. "Are you kinky? Or vanilla?"
I could see his lips twitch, caught off guard by my flip of power. "Define kinky?"
"Well," I leaned forward, leaving very little space between our faces. "do you have any dark things you like to do in bed? Anything...taboo?"
I could see his eyes watching my mouth as it moved. "I don't know."
Letting my tongue trace over my bottom lip, I smirked. "No? You've never had the chance to do anything different?"
He raised an eyebrow, now looking confused. "I mean, I'm not into like...feet, or anything, if that's what you mean?"
My eyes widened, and I couldn't stop the harsh, blistering laugh that busted out of me, making me lean back. Tears fell from my eyes, and I almost choked in the process.
I heard him laugh too, kicking a leg at me. "Hey, sorry I'm so vanilla."
I continued to cackle like a hyena, but sat up, holding my ribcage. "I'm sorry. Jesus, that was hilarious."
He rolled his eyes, clearly uneasy about his answer, but his smile was so warm, I couldn't help but reach out and grab his hand.
"It's your turn."
He sucked his teeth. "I thought it was yours?"
I huffed out the last of my laughter. "Fuck, I lost track."
"Alright, I'll go." He sighed, face now turning serious. "Was Vinny good in bed?"
His tone wasn’t playful, but I was still recovering from my fit of giggles. "Fuck no."
His eyes popped open. "Seriously?"
I wiped at my tears, sniffling. "Not at all, dude. He thought doggy style was kinky. He also referred to my chest as 'voluptuous'. Nothing kills a mood faster, let me tell you."
Now he was laughing, and I tossed my water bottle at him in response.
"It's not funny! He was awful!"
"So why'd you stay over a year?" He asked through his laughter.
"Cause." That was all I was giving on that subject.
"Did he at least make you come?"
Shaking my head, I made a gross face. "No. I usually finished after he would leave."
"Ugh, that's sad."
I rolled my eyes. "You're telling me. Guy thought eating pussy meant making out with it..."
Noah stilled, his eyes getting dark. "What a shame. Some guys have no finesse."
I felt small under his eyes, suddenly needing to switch topics off of me.
"My turn."
He just nodded in response.
"I want to go back to this kink thing." He stretched his legs and linked his hands behind his head, waiting. "Do you like it rough?"
"To me? Or to someone else?"
"Either?"
He smiled. "Both."
"Biting?"
He thought for a second. "Only sometimes."
"Choking?"
He snickered. "Yes."
Feeling brave, I sat up on my knees, slipping the hoodie over my head, and continued my interrogation.
"Dirty talking?"
"Give me an example."
I inched toward him, crawling on my hands until I was hovering over his legs. "Do you like telling her she's a good girl?"
"I suppose." His hands fell to his sides, palms up. "If she's being one."
Cocking my head to the side, I brought a hand up to his knee. "And do you like it when she begs?"
I watched as the Adam's apple in his throat bobbed. "Yes."
Slowly, my hand trailed up his thigh. "And what if she calls you names?"
His eyes scanned my face. "Like what?"
I smirked. "There's a lot of options. Sir. Master." I let a finger trace where I knew his anime tattoo was. "Daddy?"
Visibly, his sweats jumped when I said it, making my eyes shoot up to him, a demonic smile crossing my face.
"That's the one, isn't it?"
Sitting up quickly, he got in my face, his voice deadly serious.
"You know, you've asked me seven questions now. I think it's my turn."
I leaned back, moving to sit on my ass again, now under his heated stare. I just nodded.
"How long have you been thinking about me?"
My voice caught in my throat, confused. "W-What?"
He moved closer, looming over me. "How long has it been since you started picturing us together?"
I could feel his breath on my face, which made it impossible to construct a lie.
"Years."
"Have you ever thought of me when you were touching yourself?"
Oh God.
"Yes."
"Did you ever picture me, when you were with Vinny?"
It was suddenly really fucking hot out here.
"Yes."
His teeth flashed at me, ravenous.
"Do you want me to do all those things to you, that he never could?"
"Jesus Christ, Noah." It came out only as a breath.
"That's not an answer."
"Yes."
"Do you want me to lay you down right here? And eat your pussy until you're falling apart? Until you can't fucking remember how to breathe?"
Insert cause of death here.
"Y-Yes."
"You sure?" His lips were level with my ear now, voice so dangerously quiet.
"Yes," Finding the last of my spunk, I tilted my lips up, and let my eyes fell on him. "Daddy."
Somehow, I hadn't noticed that he had pulled his keys from his pocket, and suddenly, the hatch was closing. I only had a chance to look at it for a split second before I was being pushed onto my back, my sweats being pulled down off my hips. I giggled at the sudden change of energy, knowing I had flipped a switch in Noah. He leaned over me, suffocating me with a warm kiss, pressing himself down on my body.
He lifted off of me just enough to look me in the eyes. "You sure?"
He repeated his previous question, but this time with a touch less heat behind it. He was looking for permission.
Always the gentleman.
I brought my hands to either side of his face, forcing him to look me in the eyes.
"Noah," I pressed a quick kiss to his lips, and smiled. "I've never wanted anyone more than I want you in this moment."
His cheeks warmed under my fingers, and he gave me the most terrifying smile I had ever seen.
His hand slipped down into my panties, fingers slipping lazily between my lips, and I wriggled, gripping his shirt.
"Oh." My voice stuttered, and he licked a stripe up the side of my neck.
"Don't worry, baby. I've got you." One finger circled around my clit, and I pressed my hips up for more contact. "You've got yourself so worked up already."
Breathing becoming more difficult, I let my eyes fall closed. His hand slipped away from me to pull my panties down to my thighs, and I felt his body weight move off of me.
I opened my eyes to see where he went, but almost fell unconscious at the sight of him perched between my legs, hands bracing my knees. Without warning, he lifted me, arching my back upwards to lift my core to his face.
His lips latched to my sweet spot, and my vision almost went white. "Fuck!" I screamed, but he just opened his eyes to look directly at me.
He flattened his tongue, pressing it to my pussy with long strokes, pulling moans out of me at a rhythmic pace. My hands scratched at the floor, trying to find anything to grab onto.
Finally settling on latching onto his arms, my nails dug into the back of his skin as he tormented me, face pressing further and further against my core. I let my fingernails rip down the skin on his forearms, panting and thrashing against him. He let out a deep, guttural grown in response.
"Noah, fucking hell. I'm going to come."
He pulled his face away, replacing it with his hand, pressing a finger inside me and pressing it into that spot that had me almost crying.
"Ask me nicely, baby."
"Noah, please. Please!" I was desperate to feel his mouth on me again, trying like hell to not buck too hard.
"Nope. You know what I need, pretty girl."
Confused, I wracked my melting brain for what he was looking for. His finger laid on a pressure that made stars fly in my field of view, making it hard to concentrate.
Until, I realized...
"Please, Daddy, I want to come. Please." I couldn't seem to get enough air into my lungs.
He smiled, looking inhuman. My head rolled back and forth, wild.
"Mm, no problem, baby." And he was back on me, the tip of his tongue drawing my climax closer. His finger still pressed into me, and I'm fairly certain a second slipped in at some point.
It was so much, it was so beautiful. I was going to actually explode.
"Ugh, Daddy. That's it. I need it. Fuck, please. Don't stop." At this point, I was just babbling. Whatever I could to ensure he didn't stop.
When his lips grabbed onto me, an impossible suction that had my head swirling, I felt the orgasm crash into me, a sharp scream escaping.
Carefully, he set me down, and his fingers slipped out. When I cracked my eyes open, I caught the slightest glimpse of him sucking them into his mouth. I had never seen anything so raunchy, and it made my muscles twitch, already wanting more.
He sat back against the hatch, chest rising heavily, and stared at me.
He was gauging, and I could tell. He wanted to ascertain whether I was about to regret what just happened.
He's insane if he thought I could ever regret that.
Noah looked wrecked. His sweats bulged violently, begging for relief. I sat up slowly, letting the blood flow come back to the rest of my body. Carefully, I sat up on all fours, and crawled toward him. He didn't say a word, just following me with his eyes.
"That was amazing." I smiled an appreciative grin, looking up at him through my lashes. "How could I ever show my gratitude?"
I could see he was stunned, so I took the initiative to reach for his pants, pulling them down in the front, letting his erection free to stare me in the face. Taking a few long seconds to appreciate it, I looked back up, eyes innocent.
"Would you like it if I choked on your cock, Daddy?"
His pupils were so dilated, I swore his eyes were completely black. He nodded slowly, reaching a hand up to run his thumb down my cheek, and hooking my chin, forcing my mouth open.
His other hand now grasping my hair, he pressed me down onto his dick, my mouth swallowing it down as far as I could before I felt my gag reflex hit. A harsh choke came out of me, and his hand loosened.
I just inhaled a breath and swallowed him down again, picking up a pace.
A long, sweet moan erupted from his chest, his head falling back as he watched me work.
"Jesus, Mona." His other hand gripped the side of my face, catching a tear rolling down my cheekbone. "So fucking beautiful."
I felt his cock hardening, knowing he wouldn't last long this way.
"You enjoy being obedient, don't you?"
I smiled around his cock, stopping to lick a long stripe down the length to his sack, catching some of the skin between my lips for a second.
"Ah, fuck." His mouth had fallen open, eyes rolling back. "Going to swallow my come, pretty girl? You're so fucking desperate for it."
His hand shoved me down onto his cock harder, pressing himself past my tonsils and straight into the back of my throat. I coughed harshly, but he didn't let up, head leaning back and eyes rolling with it.
"So close, baby. So fucking close."
With every ounce I had, I hollowed my cheeks and sucked him as if trying to drain his life force right out. His fingers tangled in my hair ripped at my scalp.
"Fuck, I'm-" But he was cut off by his own release, his chest tensing and hand holding me in place, head pressed firmly against my gag reflex, the come hot as it hit me. I relaxed, letting my muscles swallow it down without incident.
Noah's body slumped back, and his hand loosened. Fighting for breath, I leaned my face against his leg, just gathering my thoughts.
It took me a moment to notice he was running his fingers through my hair, smoothing the knots he had created. I hummed against him before sitting up, and letting my eyes search his face - exhausted.
He looked so pretty like this. His hair was sticking to his forehead from sweat, his veins in his neck slowly relaxing, and his arms loose and sprawled out.
He caught me staring, and raised an eyebrow. "What?"
I just smirked, shaking my head. "Nothin'."
After about thirty minutes of semi-awkward silence and cleaning up as best as we could in the back of a vehicle, Noah and I made our way back to his place. It was late, so we made every effort to be silent as we made our way up to his room. It wasn't until he was putting the key in the lock of his door that we heard the voice behind us.
"Use protection."
Folio's voice made us both freeze, and our eyes looked back to where his door was closing across the hall. An embarrassed smile flashed over my face, and he just chuckled quietly before pulling me into his room.
It was familiar. I had been here hundreds of times, so I made myself comfortable, dropping my bag on his computer desk and kicking my shoes off next to all of his pairs. When I turned around, Noah was sitting on the bed, hands on his knees, and a look I didn't recognize on his face.
Concern? No, fear? I wasn't sure.
"What's wrong?"
He was chewing on his bottom lip, and I walked over to him, slotting into the place between his legs. His eyes, so fucking big, so sparkly, stared up at me. They looked soft. Vulnerable.
"I like you, Mona."
It was a very regular statement. There wasn't a certain word or emphasis that made it special. But it was. Because now things had changed. Noah wasn't just Noah anymore. He was something different. And the words may have been ordinary, but they sounded as if they should've been spoken in a confessional.
It was warming, and they made me smile.
"I like you too, Noah."
His fingers came to grip my waist, squeezing me gently. "I've liked you a long time."
Nodding, I placed my hands on the tops of his shoulders. "Same."
He shrugged hard, looking up and down my being, working out what he wanted to say.
"I want you to be happy."
I was a little confused. "Okay?"
His fingers pressed in harder. "I want to make you happy."
Remember getting butterflies when you were little? When a rollercoaster dropped? Or a cute boy smiled at you?
"You do make me happy."
He moved his hands to grab my own, and held them between us. "I want to be with you, Mona."
It was silly, I'm sure, but I was fucking giddy. Internally I was kicking my feet and squealing like a mouse. Disgusting.
"Noah?" His eyes were fixed on me, so he just twitched his brow in response. "Are you saying..." I swallowed theatrically, feigning anxiety. "you want to go steady?"
The smile that flashed across his face was blinding, all thirty-two teeth flashing like a beacon. I giggled, unable to hold back after making such an idiotic joke. He just followed suit, pulling me into a hug, his face pressed into my chest.
My arms wrapped around his neck and I rested my cheek on the top of his head.
"You're so stupid." His voice came out muffled against my breasts.
My chest shook, now laughing harder. "You like me."
He pulled back, and his hand reached to pull me closer by the back of my neck, pressing his lips against me softly. When he pulled away, his words came out as the softest whisper.
"So much."

Stars
Alistair x F!Cousland Warden
Read on AO3
Summary: On their path to Denerim, Anneliese Cousland and Alistair watch the stars, as they reflect on their journey.
A/N: This is very short but its something that had been on my mind for awhile. Everytime I go back and replay the battle of ostagar i get this terrible sad feeling because of how things went down. I didn't have much to go with this but yeah.
word count: 873
Tumblr media
It was one more night until they reached Denerim, after once again protecting Redcliff and gaining the titles of Champions.
One more night until she would be faced with the enemy.
One more night until they hopefully ended this Blight for good.
Anneliese Cousland had found a nice spot, a little further away from camp, to sit and look at the stars.
‘Even when everything changes, at least the stars will always stay the same.’ she would tell herself.
Anneliese should be asleep, but there were too many feelings inside of her to allow for a good night of rest.
It was not doubt - she had faith that they would be victorious. The dwarves, elves, mages and knights were ready. After all the work she had done to help those people, they were finally returning the favour. After all she had lost…she had come too far to lose at the end.
It wasn’t anxiety either. Anneliese always knew it would all come to this, ever since she awoke in Flemeth’s hut, even if at times the path ahead was obscure. For a moment, her determination had wavered. They were not getting anywhere near an end and it only seemed like they kept finding problems.
Fittingly, it was in the Deep Roads that she had found the strength she needed. Seeing the Archdemon flying overhead had reminded her of her duty. She would see this battle through, no matter the cost.
What she felt that night was not anxiety, nor doubt. No, it was the old beast that gnawed at her heart ever so often. The old beast called grief.
After the attack on Castle Cousland, she thought all she could feel was grief. For her parents, for her brother’s family, for Iona. But she had spent too long mourning them. She lost her home but there was still a Ferelden to save.
No, her grief tonight was for-
“There you are.” She heard Alistair’s voice as he walked towards her and sat down. “I thought I was gonna have to sleep all alone tonight.”
When she didn’t reply, he frowned. “What’s on your mind?”
“Ostagar.” Anneliese hugged her knees, as she continued to look at the stars. “Do you realize it’s been a year since…well, this all began?”
“I think Wynne mentioned it once or twice. Why?”
She sighed. “I don’t know, I just feel…we were all different people then.” She looked at him. “Does that make sense to you?”
“I think it does. I mean, I was just a bastard being raised to be a templar and now…now I’m going to be king of Ferelden.” He let out a heavy sigh. “At least I’ll have you with me.”
Anneliese gave him a small smile and placed her head on his shoulder.
“I keep thinking about that night, before the battle. All those men talking about how it would go. I remember Duncan saying there would be an Archdemon and Cailan doubting if this was even a real blight.”
“How wrong they all were.” Alistair said, solemnly.
Even after so long, Duncan’s loss still hurt him - much like her family’s still haunted her. At least, they had recovered his shield, something to remember him by.
Anneliese closed her eyes. She couldn’t stop thinking about that night. The two of them had complained when they were sent to light the signal. They were young and stupid and they wanted to join in the real fight, not knowing what would happen. Duncan had said he wanted no heroics from them.
Look at them now. Wherever his soul went, if Duncan was watching, would he be proud of what they achieved? Did he think they died in the Tower?
“I think we were all a bit foolish back then. No one could imagine what would happen.” She whispered. “Ostagar feels like a lifetime ago.”
“That’s what Loghain said.”
“I hate to agree but in that regard, he was right.”
After a moment, Alistair said “I think he was, too.”
Silence befell them again. Even if Morrigan’s ritual worked, there were still a number of different ways that they could be slain in battle. They could be betrayed again, the darkspawn could overwhelm them. Maker, even the Archdemon could prove to be too strong.
If they survived, they would never be the same. They would be heroes. They would be Queen and King, husband and wife. They would go down in history, whether they wanted to or not. Anneliese could not make sense if this was what the Maker had intended for them all along.
Once, she felt she was still a girl, wearing a soldier’s facade. Now, she would go to the battlefield as a woman. She wondered if Alistair felt the same, and part of her believed it so. He was still just one year older than her.
She sighed heavily, leaning more into Alistair’s shoulder. He covered the hands on her knees with his, as he gently placed his head on top of hers. She turned her gaze to the sky once again, feeling the gentle breeze of the air on her face.
There were many doubts about what tomorrow would bring but for now, they would sit in silence and watch the stars.
.

Hi! Hello! I am in love with your Zaundads AU! It’s become my comfort AU in the fandom because everything else is made to inflict as much emotional damage as possible 🫠 and I eat that shit up like a starved man. Anyway, I was wondering if you happened to have “Silco giving birth to [unnamed baby girl] in his office alone” in the works at all?
Prompt Idea: We have seen the aftermath of the newest baby being born in Silco's Piltover office, what about the actual birth though? Silco trying to do his work then realizing "oh shit, this is happening". Maybe even him brushing off Vander as he gets ready to go to the office. Everything up until where chapter 22 of Zaun Family picks up?
I kept coming back to this idea so even though I’m meant to be working on other prompts I wrote this instead.
Warnings: mpreg, omegaverse, mid-level graphic birth (not super graphic but not completely skimmed over).
-----------
“I know, not much longer now,” Silco tells the baby now huge in his stomach as the contraction passes over him. Hopefully he won’t have another prolonged labor like with Claggor and tomorrow the whole ordeal will be over and he and Vander can hold their new son.
He won’t be back at his office for a few days. The trip to Piltover too far to make while recovering from childbirth. So, while the contractions are still light, he might as well finish a few more tasks and make sure he as everything he might need to continue working while he rests from the birth.
He has to brace for the next contraction. The intensity of it knocking the breath from him.
“I take it you won’t make me wait another three days then?” Silco asks, resting a hand on his hard stomach as he catches his breathe before going back to reading the proposal he wanted sorted a week ago before Hoskel dragged his feet. If he is happy with it, he will be able to sign it tonight and leave for his assistant to file in the morning while he is busy delivering his baby.
The contractions make it hard to focus on the words but he manages to finish it. Scribbling a note of something he would like his assistant to confirm before filing and signing it anyway to prevent any further holdup.
“I just need to pack and then we can go home,” Silco says after another contraction.
He swears none of the others felt this intense this early. The result of being 20 years older than his last, he supposes.
He does try and hurry in packing his things even if he is sure there are hours still before he needs to worry. He wants to be home getting settled in his nest, not in his Piltover office where there is still the chance someone could want to talk to him about some frivolous matter that they care more about than righting the wrongs done to Zaun.
He is doing up his satchel when the contraction is joined by the feeling of his waters giving way and him becoming aware of exactly how heavy the weight on his hips has become.
He isn’t making it home.
He scribbles two messages down and sends them through the Pneumatic tubes. One to the Piltover doctor he had relented and gotten to appease his family’s concerns who hopefully will be working late like Silco had and one to the Last Drop – not that he expects Vander to see it with the night rush being well underway by now.
“Okay.” He braces against his desk as the next contraction goes through him. Immediately more intense without his waters to buffer.
Even if the doctor sees the message it’s unlikely she will make it in time.
He’s going to have to do this alone.
After three births Silco can comfortably say he broadly knows what to do. Of course, the previous three all ended with either him or his pup nearly not surviving.
There’s no time to think about that now. Not with the pressure baring down on his hips from a pup impatient to be born.
Silco leans against his desk as he undoes his pants and kicks them off. Hissing as the next contraction hits him and he starts feeling the pressure that he knows means it will be over soon.
“Fuck. Okay.” He grabs his coat from where it hangs on his chair, shoving it to his side so he will have something to wrap his son in when he arrives. Letting his knees give out so he’s closer to the ground and pressing his forehead against the desk before he pushes with the next contraction. Letting his head fall back after to catch his breathe.
Two more contractions and he feels the burn of a crowning pup. Reaching between his legs to confirm it is a head crowning and not a foot.
“Good boy,” Silco says as he moves his hand back against his desk.
The ordeal is thankfully over quickly. A few more pushes with the contractions and he is reaching down again to help guide his baby out so he doesn’t land on his office floor. Wrapping the pup in his coat as he lets his own legs give out from under him completely, moving so his back is against the desk and he can examine his and Vander’s latest pup.
“Ah.” It’s a girl.
Silco barely has time to think of all the people he had told this one was definitively going to be another boy whom he will now never hear the end of it from when his new pup gives an unhappy noise at the cold office air on her damp skin. It far from the soft warmth of the nest she was meant to be born in.
“She, it’s alright, I’m here,” Silco tells her as he wraps her more in his coat and brings her to his chest. Making sure she feels comfortable and safe despite the location far more important than his already ruined clothes. “I have you. No need to cry.”
Once she’s settled, he adjusts his coat to cover him a bit better for when the doctor sees his message and arrives. Resting his head back against his desk as he contemplates how lucky they both were.
If it had gone like it had any of the others-
It hadn’t though. And he and his baby girl were alive if uncomfortable.
There’s a knock at the door and Silco’s head shoots up at it.
“Who is it?” If it’s some Piltite assistant here to chase him up about their bosses request he might just tell them what he really thinks of it and all their bullshit.
“Just me,” Viktor’s voice answers. His son grumbling about Silco working so late in his current state as he opens the door.
“Shit.” Viktor’s smart comment cuts off. Instead the sound of a cane clattering to the ground echos through the office and Viktor basically falls to Silco’s side.
“I’m okay,” Silco promises, bringing a hand to cup the back of Viktor’s head and gentle nuzzle against his eldest’s face while his other hand holds his youngest against his chest. Trying to calm the bitter panicked edge that has taken over his son’s scent. Reassure him that everything he is likely fearing has not come to pass. “We’re okay.”

✦ Lost in Limbo Devlog #8 | 02.06.24
Tumblr media
AHA! It's February (has been for a few days, but I've been a bit busy as per usual) so that means another Lost in Limbo devlog! We have been recovering from our wrap-up, working left and right, and oooh boy aren't things getting interesting. Let's jump into it, shall we?
Tumblr media
First of all...
Tumblr media
🎉🎊🎊THE DEMO CGS ARE DONE!🎉🎉🎊
Raquel has worked SO HARD to achieve this, and the results are simply amazing. We could never ask for a better artist, and we can't wait for you all to see and experience every CG for yourselves. Sadly, we made a promise of only showing Gael and Amon's, so you'll have to wait a bit more for the others! ; v ;
And next! You thought we were finished with the characters?! NOT BY A LONG SHOT! As you may remember, our demo script went through a few changes, but this secondary character remains! We don't want to talk about them too much, but we also wanted you to have a taste of them, as they'll be the first character you'll meet... 👀💜
Tumblr media
Our plan is to finish this sprite and then move on to the character's expressions. We have to figure out the most efficient way to work on them, though!
Tumblr media
The dreaded section—but THIS MONTH we come with a wonderful announcement...
✨🎆Airyn has joined the team!✨🎆
And you'll ask, who's Airyn?! Well, she's an amazing person we met during our master degree; we have been developing a friendship for a while now, and as we needed an extra hand with our backgrounds, Airyn offered us her help! She's an incredibly talented concept artist who loves working on backgrounds, and we are so so thankful for her help! We literally couldn't ask for a better professional to join us during our demo journey :')!
You can see some of Airyn's work on her ArtStation, here!
She has already started to work on our unfinished backgrounds, and so far we can offer you this fantastic WIP of one of the places you'll visit in the demo! 💜
Tumblr media
But Astro is not far behind! He's getting our last background ready, and so far he's doing an impeccable job! We hope these mysterious places are piquing your curiosity, because we definitely can't wait for you to visit them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm reaching page 100 of our script, having left behind a few things to correct! Only 40~ pages left, which means soon we'll make a second round of editing and correcting. Allie is almost done with their first editing process and that's very exciting! We can't honestly thank her enough for her incredible job 💜(I think I say this a bit too much, but we gotta be thankful on this team!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The CG's have been programmed and they work so far! Now each character has a CG to be unlocked and seen in full HD, and each in their own gallery, hehe. Next I'll have to play around with the credits because I was having trouble with something last time I tried to get them done—but as always, I'll get it done one way or another!
Tumblr media
This month we have worked hard! January has been a good start of the year I think. I hope we can speed things up a bit now that we have Airyn to help us with the backgrounds, and hopefully she'll be a permanent addition to the team if everything goes well! I don't want to jinx it, but I feel I can see the end of the tunnel little by little. Planning stuff, looking up different things, getting busier and busier...Let's see if February, even if short, proves to be a productive month!
Also, we hope you all have been taking care and the start of the year has been nice to you. There's so many amazing things happening in the indie otome community, so make sure to enjoy it all! 💜

In the Walls: Part 14
Word Count: 1,761
Been a while. Sorry about that loves, it's been a tough few weeks for me and I'm struggling to write much. My sweet pup crossed the rainbow bridge and I'm still getting over the sudden loss. Hopefully I've managed to write something at least okay. Thank you for reading
-----------
You can't help the gasp that escapes you when you hear Moon’s stomach hatch close, leaving you in complete darkness aside from the occasional small lights on the different mechanisms that make up the animatronic. Your heart sinks. Had Moon intentionally trapped you in here? Was he planning on harming or even killing you? Your heart begins to hammer in your chest as you run over to where you know the opening used to be, beginning to bang on it to try and get the animatronic to let you out. Much to your dismay, he doesn't.
Moon can of course feel you banging on his insides, but has no intention of revealing your rather vulnerable self to the obviously malicious new guest that's wandered into the daycare. All three animatronics watch the white colored bunny like a hawk as she skips over to them, only pausing to wave creepily at them with her free hand. The knife in her other hand shows Moon that he's made the right choice in hiding you even if he's terrified you. Freddy tries to speak to the rather creepy bunny, but she simply stares at him blankly. Eventually she starts skipping off again, confusing the three animatronics even more.
“What the fuck was that?” Monty says finally, watching the bunny leave through another set of doors on the other side of the daycare.
“I-I do not know…..but I believe we should keep an eye on them. They do not seem to have the best intentions.” Freddy replies deciding to disregard his need to correct the swearing for now, and looking back at Moon. He quickly notices the nighttime animatronic has closed his stomach hatch to shield the precious cargo inside. He's grateful, but aware you're probably freaking out in there. “It should be safe to let them out now Moondrop.” The moon animatronic does just that, unfortunately leading to your small form falling forward and out due to you continuing to bang on the door to his stomach hatch. Thankfully he anticipates this and easily catches you in his hand. Once you have your wits about you again you unfortunately begin to panic, realizing whose hand you're in and expecting the worst after the sudden trapping.
“Easy starlight. I'd rather you didn't break any other limbs.” Moon says, glancing down at you. You avoid looking up at him and try to breathe through the pretty much immediate fear you're feeling.
“Apologies superstar, we didn't want the rabbit to see you.” Freddy explains, making you look up at him with confusion, an eyebrow raised. Rabbit? You'd never seen a rabbit animatronic around here in the time you'd been living in the pizzaplex. All you'd seen was drawings and mentions of Bonnie, who seemed to be a rabbit animatronic that was here at one point.
“W-What d-do you mean?.....th-theres no rabbits here….” You ask, voice trembling a bit from the fear throughout the whole situation. Freddy gets a sort of far away look in his eyes for a moment before recovering and responding to your statement, shaking his head.
“No. Not anymore. We aren't sure who that rabbit is or why they're here. I feel as though it may have something to do with the obvious attempts at hacking myself and the others however. They didn't try to attack any of us, but we should try to be cautious regardless and hide you when we can little superstar.” Freddy informs, thinking back to the knife in the white rabbits hand. Monty watches all of the exits around them for any sign the rabbit may be coming back. “Did you notice anything odd while you were in there little one?” Freddy asks, prompting you to hesitantly glance up at him and shake your head no. “Hm….well maybe Moondrop was right before. However it might be best to at least check Sundrop and make sure the device isn't hidden when you're out Moondrop.” The bear suggests, making Moon roll his eyes, resigned.
“Alright.” The moon animatronic states, putting out his hand to deposit you into Freddy's, who easily catches you without a second thought. You aren't exactly a fan of how roughly you're being treated but don't have much time to dwell on that before Monty turns on the lights in the daycare and Moondrop begins shifting in front of your very eyes. The daycare attendant lets out a few pained noises as the deep blue and white colors shift into a warmer color palette, revealing Sun in just a matter of seconds. You can't help but stare, after all you've never seen anything like this and can't believe what you've just witnessed. As Sun regains control of himself, you grip onto Freddy's thumb anxiously, remembering your first encounter with the sun animatronic from not too long ago. He hasn't hurt you, quite the opposite actually, but his constant and neverending energy was quite frankly terrifying. Plus that unending smile he and Moon both seem to have makes you nervous. Sun seems to have learned from your previous encounter, or he can see what Moon does enough that he makes an effort to tone it down for your sake. The willowy animatronic crouches down so his face is more level with Freddy's hand, making you step back a bit.
“Hello again little sunshine! I apologize for startling you when we first met. You're just so small and adorable I couldn't help introducing myself.” Sunny soothes, trying his best to keep his voice gentle, however unlike him it feels.
“You've met them before?” Monty asks, red optics landing on the slimer frame of the daycare attendant. Monty and Freddy have both seen you running around before of course, and much to your dismay, but they'd never actually interacted until today. Sun looks over at Monty, smiling.
“Yup! They came into the daycare and I spotted them and picked them up. I was just so excited about meeting someone new I didn't think about it scaring them. But I've never seen anyone this small before. They're just so cute I couldn't help it.” Sun replies cheerfully, Monty raising an eyebrow. He clearly didn't harm you during that rather terrifying meeting. After all Freddy had clarified you’d broken your arm while trying to run away from him, which he still feels extremely guilty about.
“Little Y/N is still struggling to be around all of us Sundrop, but they seem to want to help how they can.” Freddy clarifies, making the daycare attendant look up at him and nod.
“I understand. I'm sorry if Moon scared you little Sunshine. I would have come out instead but when the lights go out Moon comes out.” Sunny explains, making you wonder about the mechanics behind that but at the same time making you notice how nervous Sun is about his nighttime counterpart. Based on Freddy and Monty’s reaction to him you can tell by now that Moon isn't well liked and even scares the animatronics which confuses you. Moon hadn't done anything to actually harm you and had actually hid you when the rabbit came in without being asked. He couldn't be that bad if he's that kind even though he's just met you….right?
“I-It's o-okay……h-he didn't do anything wrong.” You reply, confusing both Sun and Moon who can still of course hear and see this whole interaction. The humans that work here and even the animatronics are scared of him but you…..yes you're scared but you're also being understanding and kind which isn't something he's used to. It makes the moon animatronic more curious about you, not that he's going to force himself forward or anything, just that he feels the need to interact with you more and test some things. Sun can't help pausing after hearing your response. He too can't believe you're so calm about this, about meeting Moon. He loves him of course but he seems to be the only one.
“Awe, well I'm glad little sunspot.” Sun responds, still rather dumbfounded but remembering why he shifted into this form in the first place. He stands back to his full height, backing away a bit so he's not looming over you or anything, before opening his stomach hatch and carefully placing his hand up next to Freddy's so you can climb onto it. You hesitate, staring down at his hand and trying to will yourself to climb on. After all Moon seemed to be the most likely to hurt you out of the two of them, but you just couldn't help being nervous. Still, this needs to get done. Mustering as much of your courage as you can you step forward, slowly making your way from the bears hand and onto the slimer hand of the daycare attendant. Sun waits for you to get comfortable before he brings you down level with his open stomach hatch, all the while Freddy and Monty watch anxiously as all of this happens.
“Let me know if you notice anything odd sunshine.” Sunny says gently, watching as you fearfully make your way into his stomach hatch, feeling every trembling touch when you use the walls around you to get your bearings. Much like with Moon though, you don't see anything out of the ordinary, certainly nothing like you'd seen in the others. Like in Moon, there are parts of the other counterpart within Sun’s make up but other than that things appear the same as the others, no added devices or anything.
“I-I don't see anything like the other things…..there's nothing that doesn't seem normal. I-I think Moon was right.” You yell out, earning a smirk from Moon even if no one can see it but Sun.
“Hm…..odd. Are you sure superstar? Nothing at all?” Freddy questions, making you come out towards the front of Sun’s still opened stomach hatch, shaking your head in response.
“No. Nothing. Maybe they're just targeting you, Monty, Chica, and Roxy. You're the main four. If things happen to any of you more people will notice and more things will go wrong.” You suggest, Freddy's face filling with worry at the idea. The four of you really need to get to the bottom of this, fast, before anything worse can happen and cause more chaos. Freddy looks up from you to Sun.
“Sundrop, would you be willing to help us get the devices out of Chica and Roxy? I fear if we let this go on for too long then whatever this is will only get worse.”
“I'm always happy to help!”

July 25th, 2022
Chris let out a sigh of relief as he stepped into his mother’s house from the back door, the cool air of the home giving him and Scott a reprieve from the heatwave outside. They found their Ma in her kitchen, putting away some groceries with a smile on her face as she saw her sons.
“I certainly didn’t expect to see you here today,” Lisa greeted, coming over to hug them both. She hugged Scott before hugging Chris, holding her oldest son's arms as she pulled away and told him, “I figured it would take at least another day for you to recover from the press tour.”
Chris laughed, the sound echoing through the otherwise quiet home. “Oh I’ll be going to bed early tonight, that’s for sure,” he assured her with a nod.
Scott smirked at the words, moving to grab a cup from a cabinet and fill it with water. “I’m honestly surprised that you didn’t just fly straight to San Francisco to see Nat,” he drawled, his voice booming.
“Yeah, it’s been what? A month since you’ve seen her?” Lisa asked, raising a brow as she dropped her hands from Chris’ arms and headed back into the kitchen, pulling groceries from the bags resting on the island counter.
“I was with her over the fourth so almost a month,” he corrected, leaning down to pet his Ma’s dogs as they danced at his feet. But then he thought back to his visit earlier in the month, at the fleeting moments they’d had together, but otherwise… he’d been alone. Nat’s schedule was busier than ever, if it was even possible, and she spent so much time glued to her laptop that he missed her even when he was there. “I miss Nat so fuckin’ much but I’m almost thinking about staying here.”
Lisa raised a brow suspiciously as she closed the fridge, tucking the reusable grocery bags into each other. “Oh really?” She asked him while she looked at him curiously.
“I’m just so exhausted. Going from filming earlier this year to the Lightyear press and right into The Gray Man press, I’m just so tired,” he murmured with a shake of his head as he leaned his hip against the island. “And now that I’ll be going to Atlanta soon for Pain Hustlers, I feel like I just need a break away from everything.”
“Maybe Nat could come out here instead?”
“Yeah I think I might ask her if she could,” Chris nodded his head. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to see her, in fact, the opposite was true but after being dragged from one interview to another then put on a plane to make another appearance and do the whole routine again, he was craving his safe space more than ever. He just wanted to be home and sleep in his own bed, have home cooked meals, and decompress in the place he felt the most himself. Chris ran a hand through his hair while he mused, “I want to see her so bad, but when I’m there during the week, she’s at work anyway so it’s not like we get to spend much time together.”
He watched as Lisa pursed her lips while she listened to his words. “Well maybe once you rest up a little more, you could go out for a weekend,” she suggested, her eyebrows raising hopefully as she looked at her oldest son. He shrugged his shoulders at that as he heard Scott’s small noise of agreement and sighed.
“I don’t have many more weekends before I start filming again,” he began as he stared down at the marble countertop. He’d gotten the official schedules for both shoots a few weeks ago, and there was virtually no spare time once he started the first project, but what little time he had left before was quickly getting filled up in Massachusetts. He hadn’t been home for a long stretch of time since the previous year, and even then he spent most of 2021 in Los Angeles, growing his relationship with Nat. He’d missed home, missed seeing his family, the kids, getting to just live without constantly looking over his shoulder. And the growing list of responsibilities from ASP that he’d been ignoring while working were piling up, and his schedule was full of tasks between now and the middle of August. By then, he’d jump right into the shoots around Florida and Georgia with the cast of Pain Hustlers to then be in Atlanta working for months on end for Red One, having no real opportunities to visit Nat in California. “I just hate to disappoint Nattie.”
“Honey, you know Nat will understand,” Lisa placated her son, looking at him seriously as she listened to his words. “She won’t want you to kill yourself just to come see her.”
Chris shook his head, explaining, “Oh I know she’ll understand, Nat always does.”
“I know a certain dog who will be happy that you’ll be around here for a while,” she pointed out with a small chuckle, shaking her head in amusement.
“You should have seen how I woke up this morning. Dodger was laying right on top of me,” Chris laughed, thankful for the shift in conversation away from him changing his and Nat’s plans.
Scott’s dry laugh cut through the room as he told their mother, “He’s been right on Chris’ heels all day.”
Lisa smiled at the comment, before her eyes turned curious and she looked at Chris as he finally sat down in a barstool next to Chris. “What were you guys up to today?” She asked them both, looking between them.
“Well…” Chris started as Scott bit his lip, turning to look at him as well. With both his Ma’s and Scott’s eyes on him, a smile crossed his lips.  “That’s actually part of the reason we came over…”
“Why’s that?”
A warm smile crossed his lips as his brain was able to switch from the exhaustion his whole body was clouded in, to instead thinking about the purchase he made hours earlier and the meaning that came with it as he told his mother, “I bought something for Nat today that I wanted to show you…”
He could feel Lisa’s eyes on him as he pulled the velvet box out of the plain white bag and handed it over to her. He watched as she flipped it open and saw the shining diamond ring inside as she gasped, “Chris, you got her a ring? You’re going to ask her to marry you?”
“Yeah Ma, I am,” a warmth spread throughout him as he said those words out loud.
Chris could see the tears glossing her eyes as she gasped, “Oh honey, I couldn’t be happier.”
“Me neither,” he shook his head almost in disbelief that this was really happening. His own tears started gathering in his blue eyes, making him blink furiously before he swallowed the emotional lump in his throat, “I think I’ve known for a while now that Nat was the one for me but when I was with her in San Francisco for our anniversary earlier this year I just… knew. I just don’t want anyone but her.”
“I knew from that first time I met her that you two would be together,” Lisa stated firmly before going over to hug her eldest son tightly.
“I think we all knew that one,” Scott chimed in with a chuckle from where he had sat down at the counter, knowing that Chris and Nat being together was something they all saw coming a mile away.
Chris had to wipe a hand along his cheeks, swiping away the tears as he admitted, “I just love her so much. I never even knew it could feel like this,”
“I’m so happy for you Chris. I can honestly say this is the best decision you’ve ever made,” his mother encouraged him with a hand rubbing up and down his back but then wanted to know, “When are you going to ask her?”
The question was one he’d been thinking about a lot but still hadn’t figured out an answer to, letting her in, “I’m not sure yet. I don’t really have a specific time so I’m just going to ask her when the moment feels right.”
Lisa couldn’t help but give him another hug, squeezing him tightly as she once again told him just how happy she was before the conversation shifted toward dinner and the brothers decided to stay and help get things ready. As Chris was pulling out the plates, his gaze drifted down to the ring box that was sitting open on the counter and felt the conversation happening around him seem to drift away. He picked up the box and looked at that sparkling ring, imagining what it would look like on Nat’s hand and almost finding it unbelievable that at the beginning of the previous year he hadn’t even met her, but now here he was ready to place this on her hand with the promise of forever.
He loved her so much it almost hurt and even as insecure and indecisive as he could be, this was one decision that didn’t leave any doubts in his mind other than the timing. With his schedule being full with two more movies and Nat being in San Francisco for her job, he didn’t know the next time that they’d get any extended amount of time together and although it left him at a loss on how to fully support her while he wasn’t there, he had come to see through their breakup that none of it mattered. Sure, it was a hurdle they’d need to figure out how to cross, but all that mattered is that he had Nat in his life and he wanted her forever. Chris knew that this was the best thing that could ever happen to him, but what he didn’t know is that while he stood here full of joy and peace, the woman he loved was across the country feeling desperately trapped in the new job and life she had chosen and felt more stuck that she ever had in her life.
Tumblr media
Nat shut the creaking door behind her and locked the deadbolt, closing her eyes and leaning her head against the door as she felt her muscles tense. She looked around her dark apartment, feeling… indifferent to everything. Coming home had always been something sacred to her, her escape, her happy place, where she hosted friends, family, game nights, and movie nights. But here… she’d hole up for days over a weekend without having anyone here who would reach out to say, “Hey! Haven’t seen you this weekend, want to grab brunch tomorrow?”, only to hear a ping alerting her to new emails. It was no longer a place of refuge to her, instead, it felt like a place where she couldn’t take a deep breath, where she could never relax, where no one would come looking, or even stop by. She was completely alone here in this silent apartment, but the one bright spot that had gotten her through so many days was knowing that in one day, her apartment would be occupied by the heart-of-gold man that she loved so dearly. His laughter would fill the tiny space, his hands would rub her aching back, and his presence would fill the void in her heart that had been hurting so badly.
When her phone started ringing, she pulled it out and saw his name on her screen, bringing out the first genuine smile in a long time as she held it up to her ear and greeted him with a hello that sounded a lot less enthusiastic than she intended but just couldn’t seem to muster anything more.
“Hi honey, is this a good time?” He asked her, his voice filling her ear.
She nodded, suppressing the sigh that caught in her throat. “Yeah I’m just walking through my door,” she told him, hanging her bag on the hook by the door as she kicked her shoes off.
Nat heard him huff out a breath, his voice quiet as he pointed out, “Nattie, it’s almost eight there.”
She shook her head, frowning at his concern. She knew it was well placed, it always was. They cared about each other to be making those jabs at the other, but it didn’t mean her shoulders relaxed a little at every concerned comment he made. If anything, it made her feel a little worse. “I know, it just was a busy day,” she explained, her voice quiet as she turned on the lights and stepped further into the apartment.
“Will you promise me that you’ll have some dinner?”
“I promise I will,” she told him, glancing towards the shoebox of a kitchen before she headed into the living room, sitting down on the couch with a sigh. “I actually am a little surprised to hear from you. I figured you’d be asleep with you flying out here tomorrow.”
“That’s actually what I wanted to call you about,” he began, pausing as he sighed. Nat froze, listening as he finally asked, “Nattie, would it disappoint you if I didn’t come out to San Francisco?”
Her brows furrowed and her hand reached, plucking a few threads from the worn blanket on the couch as she fidgeted anxiously. “Is everything okay?” She asked worriedly, unsure if something had happened
“Yeah, yeah it’s fine, I’m just so exhausted,” he admitted and Nat could have been able to know that without his admission. The weariness in his voice was evident even if she hadn’t known how packed his schedule had been but kept listening as he sighed, “I feel like I’ve just been going non-stop for the past couple months and then with heading into doing two more movies this year, I just feel really overwhelmed. I just want some time to decompress.”
“Of course I’m sad not to see you but that’s fine Chris, I want you to take care of yourself,” Nat told him truthfully. In reality, hearing those words felt like a punch in the gut or as if all the air from her lungs had just been taken away. Having him come out to see her had been the one saving grace through all of this. She knew that if she could just make it to when she’d get to have his arms around her again, then maybe she could do this. Maybe that would help center her again, but in an instant that had been stolen away.
But she couldn’t tell him that. She couldn’t burden him with the knowledge of how much she was struggling while he was so burnt out and had to recharge before being thrown into filming again. Besides, he had warned her. He was the one who told her that this job wasn't for her and that it didn’t seem like the right move for her and he had been right. Nat just couldn’t let anyone, especially herself, know how much this job was taking a toll on her. It was just a job and the fact that she couldn’t seem to handle it only made her feel like even more of a failure than ever.
“I hope you know how much I want to see you and it has nothing to do with that,” Chris went on to assure her, but it brought little healing to her heart because all she could feel was that she was alone yet again. “I also figured that when I’m there during the week I don’t get to see you much anyway and thought that maybe you could come out for a weekend if you have time or I could come out there before Atlanta.”
“I’m not sure yet what my schedule is but we’ll figure something out. I want you to just decompress,” she rushed to tell him, trying hard to cover up the tears and heavy emotion in her voice.
“Are you sure, Nat?”
Nat just took a deep breath, trying to steady her voice before responding with, “I am, I want you to rest. I know how important it is to you to be able to be away from everything in Boston.”
“Thanks for understanding, baby. I love you so much and I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”
Nat pushed out a quick “I love you too” before hearing the line hang up. She couldn’t even pull the phone away from her ear before silent tears started spilling out of her eyes. With a shaky finger she clicked the red button before trudging over to the couch where she laid down and grabbed a pillow, clutching it to her chest as the tears just wouldn’t stop pouring down her face.
Nat was so proud of Chris. She was so proud of all he’d done this year, pushing himself with the films he was doing and going through the press tours he hated so much while traveling the world in a whirlwind. She was so happy that he could recognize when he needed a break, and just decompress. She was so glad that he had a place to do that, where he had a home to just be himself and relax but right now she just hated it so much that the home wasn’t with her.
Using the sleeve of her sweatshirt, she furiously wiped at her eyes and sat up. Nat tried so hard to just pull it together, but the moment her eyes glanced out the window of her apartment and she saw the almost tauntingly beautiful view of San Francisco, heavy sobs started pouring out of hers as those tears that she had just wiped away were quickly replaced. Just one look at that view reminded her that she was here in the city by the bay, completely and utterly alone.
She had always loved her job, working as an animator was truly a dream come true. Nat was just a normal girl who had been given an incredible gift by having a father who believed in her, sending her to art school to follow her dreams but it felt like somehow her real dream, the real longing of her heart had slipped through her fingers. Nat had been so happy working at Disney, settling into a life in California over the past decade and having an incredible group of friends, including Mark and Jamie who had become more like family to her.
But COVID had changed everything for her. In that time frame, her engagement to Shane had ended, Nat had become so much more self assured and knew who she was, but after being able to spend months at home with her family, she had moved back to California with a loneliness in her heart and a longing for something more. For the first time in her life she had seen how much she wanted more than her job. She wanted her own family and to be able to love someone and have them love her in return.
And then Chris came into her life.
So much had changed since he’d made his unexpected entrance in her life and Nat had found out so many more things about herself and what she wanted. He helped her to rest in who she was and embrace what it was that made her… well, her. He was her best friend and gave her peace in a way that she couldn’t quite explain. But there was still a part of her that let those little voices into the back of her head, remembering the looks she’d gotten from people when she was younger and said her dream was to be an artist. She remembered the jokes so many made when they asked what she was going to do for a ‘real job’ and the sting of that in her formative years still was underneath the surface.
Nat’s fingers were clutching tight on that pillow as she thought back to her dad dropping her off at art school as he hugged her tightly and told her how proud of her he was and that he knew she’d do great things. Ever since then all she had wanted to do was prove him right, to show everyone she wasn’t just the overemotional chaotic artist little sister behind two intelligent successful older sisters who seemed to be able to do all the things she viewed herself incapable of.
So here she was. Accepting this job that she thought would somehow prove something. That somehow would be the icing on the cake of ‘See? I can be a successful artist’ but all it had done was show her just how right Chris had been about all of this. This wasn’t what she wanted. She hated every bit of this job. She wanted so much more than this now. She wanted Chris. She wanted a family. She wanted to create for herself. But there was no turning back now. There was no way that she could go to her boss only a couple months after starting and basically say she wanted to be demoted, especially when her position back in Burbank had already been filled. Not to mention that she had taken a stand with this job and Chris, resulting in them temporarily breaking up. That felt like such a huge failure in her mind and that was something Nat simply just couldn’t take at the moment.
So here she had been, putting her nose to the grindstone and putting in her hours, trying to get through the days with the light at the end of the tunnel being August. The month when she’d get her best friend back. When she’d finally get to feel his arms around her. When she’d finally not dread the weekends and spend them crying in bed but instead fill them with laughter and happiness with Chris. When she’d finally get to relax for the first time in weeks. Knowing that he was coming to her was like a lifeline, knowing that she just had to make it until then and then hopefully things would be better. But now it felt like that lifeline that was dangling just out of her reach was snatched away and she was left drowning.
But there was no way she could ask him to come. It was just too selfish. She couldn’t possibly know just how packed his schedule had been and hear his weary voice saying how much he just needed to go home and then ask him to come be with her instead. So here she was. Sitting alone on this couch, tears streaming down her face as she felt completely alone and completely stuck.
