Marauders Fandom > "There is no canon !!" and other rhetorics

Guess who's back in their marauders phase after 2-3 years of being dormant lmao?? ((spoiler its me lol)). Anyways, a lot has changed since 2021 in this fandom so I just wanted to talk about the direction i think it's going.

I remember in 2020-21 the fandom started to boom in popularity on tiktok --> esp with the rise wolfstar + atyd. I remember people were so suprised with remus' characterization as 'rougher around the edges' instead of the 'soft boi' thing, and how that influenced the new wolfstar dynamic. [Just want to add that the atyd characterisation is much more complex than this and its one of my fave fics --> I'm more talking about the fandom at large's reaction to this)

And since fandom is incapable of having two nuanced and characters who are not stark opposites,, their roles were basically reversed and now Remus is the toxic dom alpha male and sirius is the cute girlyboy twink --- which um,,, the oc-ification is so real its embarrassing but whatever (omg don't even get me started on jegulus 💀)). I just assumed these would stay as headcanons. But now we have people saying, that 'we barely know anything abt the marauders in canon' or 'isn't the whole point of fandom to make shit up?' which i have sO many issues with so let me just try and compile my thoughts into dot points for the sake of coherency.

'we barely know anything abt the marauders in canon' ---> First of all, Remus, Sirius and Severus are fully fleshed out characters in the og series -- why do you think people would care enough to create an entire fandom based on their backstories if they were 2d flat characters in canon?? Like bffr. I saw a post on here (forgot who it was by, let me know if u know!) that said, 'I didn't cry over sirius' death in OotP just for ppl to say that we know nothing abt him in canon'. Like, its just mind-boggling to me lol.

'isn't the whole point of fandom to make shit up?' --> Ok y'all. For a fandom to work, there have to be some guidelines, some kind of source material, some point of reference so people can build upon it and make content. I think we can all agree on that. One reason why HP is such a popular place for fandom is the world-building and potential plots/storylines. I see some people argue that jk rowling was a shit writer anyways so might as well contradict everything she says. Now, I don't disagree with that point in particular, Jo is a pretty mediocre writer and a terrible person. HOWEVERrr, I'd argue that it is a lot more fascinating when people expand or work on the concepts in HP. JK Rowling has a lot of great ideas but executes them terribly -- I love when fic writes do this, which prolly explain why I love atyd as it is still very much canon compliant but executes themes on class, disability and queerness that jkr could barely do in subtext. This doesn''t mean I only think canon compliant fics are valid. That's not the case! I think as long as the charcterization is consistent to the character and the particular circumstances/world they're in, its fine! In fact, I love seeing how the same character would function if in a different place! I also love seeing explorations of the magic and magic systems in aus or fix it fics (or even canon compliant ones) that still fit in with the canonnical system that we know.

I guess what I'm trying to say I wish the marauders fandom explored the world and charcterizations more deeply instead of creating shallow oc-fied version of the characters that fit into whatever's trending -- like just write your own book or smth lol -- booktok will eat it up i promise.

Also, kinda related kinda not but um,,, why are we romanticising fascists -- like babe no evan rosier is not your babygirl he canonnoically tortured multiple ppl and became a death eater soo... not saying that I wouldn't want an exploration of his character or even a relationship with barty -- (who's not some cool dairk-haired edgelord but a actually a cowardly fascist murderer with blond hair -- yes the blond hair is important) -- I'd just want them to be portrayed as the not morally good people they are. Like,, if u want to oc-ify a character like pick someone whos not a death eater or has little info on them like dirk cresswell or frank longbottom,,, or ya know,, one of the MANY female characters in the fandom ((This fandom also has a problem with women and sapphic ships in general but that's a whole other issue lol).

I know this 'babygirlification' of death eaters doesn't mean to do this, but it also ends up watering down the themes of oppression, bigotry, etc and leaves us with not nearly as complex characters. Also one of the issues I had with the og HP world is that JK will introduce concepts like wizard racism and slavery and then just like,, not really do anything about it or just have half-arsed redemption arcs whilst not ever actually exploring the root of the issue. And now i feel like the fandom is following in those footsteps unfortunately.

Anyways, i've been rambling for too long so I'll just leave it here. Sorry if this came off as mean spirited in anyway,, I just have a lot of thoughts™ and my family is sick of hearing them lol. These opinions are not set in stone however so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this subject! this is where things start to get pretty messy due to the sheer number of prequel cats i need to make decisions about, pretty much entirely in rc and sc. i'll provide insight into why the ones i have listed are still around as these prequel cats do just tend to randomly fall off the timeline with no explanation or canonical deaths

cinderkit and brackenkit are listed as kits instead of apprentices bc they are not apprenticed until like 100 pages in

swiftpaw is still listed as an apprentice bc he is apprenticed in like the first chapter

they lose a LOT of cats from the previous allegiances due to their last mentioned appearances being at the end of yellowfang's secret and not a lot of them reappearing in exile from shadowclan or tigerclaw's fury

whitepaw/whitethroat - not mentioned until rising storm, but needs to be a warrior by then. i made him a kit in the itw allegiances and thus now he's an apprentice

applepaw/applefur and ratpaw/ratscar - not mentioned until tigerclaw's fury but need to be warriors by then. i made them kits in the itw allegiances and thus they are now apprentices

brightflower, crowtail, archeye, featherstorm, hollyflower - alive and rejoined shadowclan's camps at the end of exile from shadowclan

hiii, first off im gonna say I love your fics, and I love your analysis of all the NXX boys, it rlly made me wanna learn more about the non-luke characters lol. (plus that one fic of yours that was omega luke going into heat permanently lives inside my head)

I just wanted to say abt the ask that wonders if Rosa knows Luke's illness is chronic - he tells her explicitly that the doctors have told him he has less than three years of life left in story 3 of under the milky way. it's right at the start of story 3, in the letter he sends rosa.

which also leads me to a question about the canonicity? canon-ness? canonnity? of the cards. I'm sorry if I'm just completely out of the loop, I dropped ToT for a bit before coming back and I have a terrible memory. but are all the events in these cards canon? because like the asker said, it rlly would change the dynamic if Rosa thought the illness was just chronic. (also I forgot if he mentioned the 3 year thing elsewhere). post-utmw Rosa knows he only has 3 years left but does regular rosa know?

im so glad you like both my analyses and my fics (especially the omega luke fic gosh, it’s been so long since then, i almost forgot i wrote that HAHA)

now in regards to that ask youre mentioning, i fear there mightve been a misunderstanding! cuz in that ask, we were pertaining to the mc that exists within the Main Story Route. whereas the mc youre describing is the mc that exists within the Luke Personal Story route. forgive me if i misunderstood but to explain, eventually, main story and personal story (aka where all the respective cards, respective personal stories, and probably even the team events in a wibbly wobbly timey wimey way, exist in) diverges

to better visualize this, ive made a chart. but you caught me at a time i was doodling and had my drawing tablet plugged in so we’re all getting a taste of my bad handwriting

so if you look at this, you'll first notice how i forgot the number 6 in main story and then rushed to squeeze it in. but more importantly this is what i mean by diverging

based on what i remember, im pretty sure (....okay semi-pretty sure) that for all of the boys, main stories 1-5 has happened. this is because cards will mention dangerous/busy work (nxx work) and thus mc must be part of the team first for that work to happen. main stories 1-5 also must have happened because thats how she meets/works with (or re-meets, in luke's case) all of the boys one by one. after which, the personal story routes (along with all the cards) happens in a divergent timeline

there are some caveats tho. very very early cards of luke (and for this ask i will focus on luke's divergent personal story route timeline, just for simplicities sake.....should i abbreviate too? Luke's DPSRT = divergent personal story route timeline. Luke's MSRT = main story route timeline. perfect. that totally makes things less confusing!) mention mc not yet knowing where luke was during his 8 year disappearance, meaning that those cards MUST have happened BEFORE main story 5, when he tells the truth about where he went

barring little bits like those though, this divergence generally stands. the biggest proof of the divergence showed up in main story 9 because at that point, mc in Luke's DPRST already Knew about luke's illness. but mc in Luke's MSRT does not, and does not know as much as of the details as well.

another smaller proof that Luke's DPRST and Luke's MSRT are divergent is aaron. in Luke's DPRST, mc meets aaron for the very first time in bloom chapter personal story 4. but in Luke's MSRT, mc meets aaron for the first time in main story 9.

now on canonicity? my answer is yes

on like, everything.

i think the prologue is a dream sequence or some kind of metaphor or some kind of fever dream, yeah, but one that takes place in the Main Story Route Timeline specifically. and that something went wrong. terribly wrong, though idk what yet exactly.

the reason i think this happens in the MSRT in particular is cuz of 1) it's a prologue to main story in particular, i feel + 2) because of what we call "pulls" in this game: we use a Tear (of themis) to receive a pull of a card, which are called Visions.

all the cards of happier romances take place in divergent timelines, and these are visions because maybe it is MSRT mc who is having visions of these different possibilities that couldve happened, if only she werent in this timeline she chose, in the main story timeline where so many horrible things happen.

.....i feel as if ive said the word "timeline" way too many times to be making sense now, but theres my answers, anon 1 and anon 2!!

Allos in this year, 2023, still don't see aspec orientations as genuine orientations. they see it as an empty space where the orientation is inexplicably missing, so they see a character who is cannonically aroace and viscerally repulsed by all forms of relationships and touch, and think that, because this is a "lack of orientation" rather than an orientation directed at, explicitly, no one, they think it's perfectly fine and not bigoted at all for them to shove their orientations onto the explicitly Queer character, erasing the aroace representation in favor of turning it into another Cis Gay Man who uses he/him...even though the character is literally nonbinary, and uses it/its pronouns.

Because they also see being nonbinary as a "fill in the missing parts" puzzle. They think the character describing its gender as "not applicable" and "indeterminate" means that, really, it's a guy! it's a man! Because it's funny and relatable and only Men™ are relatable! Only Male Characters™ can be funny and well-written!

In 2023!

Fully grown adults are fucking pulling this shit in 2023 and think they're the perfect Queer Allies™

Because they don't see aroace or nonbinary people as actually existing, and actually having meaningful identities. They think we're walking fucking ad-libs and they can fill in the "blanks" with whatever's most palatable to their tastes.

And that means misgendering the canonnically nonbinary character who uses it/its pronouns, erasing literally every single aspect of its identity that gets in the way of shipping it (removing its aceness, its aroness, or just straight up pretending it's not aroace to begin with, and erasing its solitaremit touch averseion), and then pretending their actions are completely harmless when they're called out for it.

Because according to them, it's not bigotry if the canon Queer identities they're erasing are the ones they think don't exist in the first place. Being aroace isn't an orientation for them, it just means you're broken and need to be fixed. Being nonbinary and using it/its with them isn't a real gender identity and presentation, it means they're something wrong with you and you need to be fixed. Being touch averse isn't a real disability, it just means there's something wrong with you, and you need to be fixed.

They don't fucking see Murderbot as representation for real Queer disabled trans people. They see it as something broken that needs to be fixed, by taking away everything that makes it who it is, so that they can fill in all the now gaping wounds with their own much less stigmatized identities instead.

Even though the literal entire theme of The Murderbot Diaries is that you should treat people with respect even if you don't understand their experiences.

Gonna talk about Blood Moon saga now because that's long overdue and I've been meaning to talk about itt, 'cause hooo boyy this comic was wildd X"DD

Sooo, in shortt, Blood Moon saga was an old Team Scorpions comic that I had made around the time Plantae was being worked on back in 2019 that was inspired by Red Venom Sagaa, an official Team Scorpions workk

Mob had told me that it wasn't canon to the official Team Scorpions lore (since some of the characters didn't exist in canonn) which is finee, because now I can change that comic to make it fit with Exits (My Cuphead AU, you can read about it heree), 'cause a lot of what took place isn't canon to it anymoree >:)

Basicallyy, the main plot of this comicc, was that Rodger Clematus (an OC of minee that was canon to Plantaee, he was in Maxinne's lore sheet on the Plantae blogspott, buut he was never mentioned by namee) allowed Beatriz and Charleston to be apart of the Nightshade Mafiaa:

While the Team was out searching for Cagss, Scotch possessed him and killed one of Rodger's assistants (Ramone, another plant that was shown in the beginningg) so he could try and take his seedd, which eventually failedd, as Rodger found Cags and Scotch got out of his bodyy

Right when Rodger found himm, the Team Scorpions showed upp, aand to before Rodger could do anything to themm, Scotch shot Rodger and fuzed with himm

Noww, fusion waas... A strange thing in Plantaee (Yess, fusion was canonn). For this concept of fusionn, it would either have to be a romantic thingg (by this I mean sexuall, it was often that Beatriz would fuse with Cagney or someone else in the TS comics Mob madee... Meaning either Cagney or someone else would likely be r*pedd, as both Passive and Aggressive Cagney had a partner of their ownn ((Blind Specter and Levin Nightshadee)), or someone would have to kill the other person and then fuse with themm

Now if you want a Gryffindor/Slytherin ship for Ron this one is the safest option. She is a blank slate in canon so you can give her any personality you want. However she is just a name in canon. Its same as Ron/OC just using a canon name. I am not into that kind of ships. I cant connect to OCs or complete fanmade character emotionally. So personally don't like it. But it has some merits.

This one wouldnt work. Movie Luna and Book Ron? It can. But book Luna is a complete delusional weirdo who thinks Sirius is a sensational singer called stubby broadman and fudge makes goblin pies. All those rubbish. Ron wouldn't be attracted to her. Plus I think she would let him walk all over her. He can be downright rude and sarcastic and she is too meek to put him in his place. But theoretically its cute. The bullied loner and the popular funny guy who loves her.

I can see them hooking up once or twice bcz Ron does think Cho is hot in canon. Plus their passionate argument about tornadoes and canonns was cute lol. But other than that nope. Ron can't deal with so much tears. He is 10 times better at handling emotional girls than Harry but even he has limits. I also think Ron wouldn't appreciate the fact that she sided with her snitch friend Marietta.

I see no problem why either of those two wouldn't work. Seamus and Dean are background characters and they don't have any negative part that would make those ships impossible. Personally don't like them bcz I see Ron as straight and those ships don't have my fav tropes.

A few weeks ago I saw a big tumblr post about the Irondad fandom being kind of racist and sexist for claiming two white men are „soooo close and like father and son“ instead of like, the canon Relationships like Spideychelle and ned and Peter and May and Peter. Saying that irondad fandom says spideychelle had NO chemistry and no worldbuildinh etc but say things like Peter and tony loving each other (platonic ofc) or completely ignoring Ned and peters friendship and ship him with a skinny white boy (h*rley) look. I totally and completely see their point and really agree. BUT.. I just feel really really bad now reading fics? (I haven’t read a fic in weeks because this thought is really stuck on my head)

I am an almost 20 year old asexual aromantic girl who just.. really prefers not to read any romance in fanfics. I see enough overdone romance in other media and fanfics are really my comfort zone. Especially irondad because there is nothing s*xual in it.

It’s not that I hate spideychelle or Ned/Peter. And it’s not that I ship Peter/h*rley because they Are both white boys. In fact, I absolutely hate that ship.

But I really like reading about Peter and Morgan because they remind me of myself and my sister. But now there’s always this thing in my head that says „you prefer reading about two characters who never even INTERACTED before being siblings instead of the canon relationships?? A) Why would it be racist? Or sexist? Both characters are canonically white characters. Both characters are canonically males. We don’t ignore that Peter has May or MJ or other motherly figures in his life but we enjoy exploring the relationship between Peter and Tony. That is in no way sexist. Also, I’ve never seen any slander in my entire time here about Ned or MJ being characters of color and I most certainly don’t write Harley into Ironfam just cause he’s some skinny white boy. Whatever that post is is a blatant hack at trying to make something into something it’s not. Those kinds of posts are what confuse people on what actual racism and sexism are.

I actually took that in consideration for a long time before continuing the first part (since he started as the a-hole he was from the beginning anyway) and I reached the conclusion that it has a lot to do with me inserting Reader into the storyline.

See, canon Ivar received a really irregular amount of love and despise at the same time: his mother was overprotective and loving while his brothers seemed to have this love/hate relationship with him. Canonnically, the world either ignored him or feared him. Reader in this case acted as a regulator: knew him since childhood and spent a great time with him while both of them were growing so her presence influenced greatly on what he was going to be. She paid him attention and appreciated him when the rest of the kids ran away from him, brought him back to earth when his ego raised. Not in the same way like Sigurd though. Basically, she gave him the stability canon Ivar never had since the beginning of the fict.

And i feel like I had to show somehow that is one of the reasons why, as Reader leaves to pursue her own goals, Ivar slowly drifts back into being canon Ivar, although it may not be very clear since I comprised the Epilogue in 5k words and focused it on Reader’s POV.

To summarise, Reader gave Ivar the stability he never had and once she is taken out of the equation, the whole system crumbles.

I wish I could clarify this now, it would actually raise the quality of the story.

Okay. I'm about to FINALLY reply to one or two threads finally. But before that, let me make one thing very clear when it comes to me roleplaying as canon muses:

I am aware that I don't 100% follow the canonnity of a muse, even if I sometimes want to dive into stuff that happened in canon or could happen in canon. I like certain what if scenarios, which is why some of my muses have alternate timelines. I know with some of my mutuals there might be certain what if scenarios that they don't want to dive in to, and I can totally understand that, just be clear that you rather not want to interact in that kind of scenario.

Also, I know that I should look up info about a muse or series some more, but depending on what media it's presented as, it's a bit more tedious for me to be in the mood to learn. I know it's a part of my issue, but I'm trying to find the time and mood to read a certain game's manga. I know that I want to roleplay a character that has a bit of lore in it, but dang it I sometimes just want to see how well I think I write as said character, because currently the roleplays with me using said muse are either on stand by or just got dropped without me being informed and that sort of thing always lingers in my mind for weeks.

Allos in this year, 2024, still don’t see aspec orientations as genuine orientations. They see it as an empty space where the orientation is inexplicably missing, so they see a character who is cannonically aroace and viscerally repulsed by all forms of relationships and touch, and think that, because this is a “lack of orientation” rather than an orientation directed at, explicitly, no one, they think it’s perfectly fine and not bigoted at all for them to shove their orientations onto the explicitly Queer character, erasing the aroace representation in favor of turning it into another Cis Gay Man who uses he/him…even though the character is literally nonbinary, and uses it/its pronouns.

Because they also see being nonbinary as a “fill in the missing parts” puzzle. They think the character describing its gender as “not applicable” and “indeterminate” means that, really, it’s a guy! it’s a man! Because it’s funny and relatable and only Men™ are relatable! Only Male Characters™ can be  funny and well-written!

Fully grown adults are fucking pulling this shit in 2024 and think they’re the perfect Queer Allies™, and like this isn't the world's most basic misogyny to top off the exorsexism and transmisia. And that means misgendering the canonnically nonbinary character who uses it/its pronouns, erasing literally every single aspect of its identity that gets in the way of shipping it (removing its aceness, its aroness, or just straight up pretending it’s not aroace to begin with, and erasing its solitaremit touch averseion and disgust towards sex and intimacy of any kind), and then pretending their actions are completely harmless when they’re called out for it.

Because according to them, it’s not bigotry if the canon Queer identities they’re erasing are the ones they think don’t exist in the first place. Being aroace isn’t an orientation for them, it just means you’re broken and need to be fixed. Being nonbinary and using it/its with them isn’t a real gender identity and presentation, it means they’re something wrong with you and you need to be fixed. Being touch averse isn’t a real disability, it just means there’s something wrong with you, and you need to be fixed.

They don’t fucking see Murderbot as representation for real Queer disabled trans people. They see it as something broken that needs to be fixed, by taking away everything that makes it who it is, so that they can fill in all the now gaping wounds with their own much less stigmatized identities instead.

Even though the literal entire theme of The Murderbot Diaries is that you should treat people with respect even if you don’t understand their experiences.
