What Is Cognitive Load? Cognitive load refers to the mental effort required to process information. Too much at once can overwhelm users, leading to frustration and abandonment.
How to Reduce It:

Break content into smaller, digestible chunks.

Fitts’s Law: Designing for Easy Interaction
What Is Fitts’s Law? Fitts’s Law says the time to reach a target depends on its size and distance—larger, closer elements are easier to interact with.
How to Use It:
Create large, easily tappable buttons.
Place key actions within thumb zones (especially on mobile).
Space out touch targets.
Example: Apple’s iOS keyboard ensures usability by placing frequently used keys in easy-to-reach zones.
The Von Restorff Effect: Make It Pop
What Is It? Also known as the “isolation effect,” it suggests users are more likely to notice and remember distinct elements.
How to Apply It:
Use bold or contrasting colors for CTAs.
Highlight key messages with unique visual treatment.
Make errors visually distinct.
Example: Dropbox’s bright blue CTA pops on a white background, driving conversions.
The Serial Position Effect: Strategic Placement
What Is It? People remember the first and last items in a sequence better than those in the middle.
How to Use It:
Place critical links at the top and bottom of navigation.
Start and end sections with high-impact content.
Order form fields by importance.
Example: E-commerce sites often showcase bestsellers at the beginning and end of product lists for maximum engagement.
The Zeigarnik Effect: Nudging Task Completion
What Is It? People remember incomplete tasks more than completed ones, which motivates them to return and finish them.
How to Apply It:
Use progress indicators on multi-step tasks.
Send follow-up emails for unfinished actions.
Apply gamification like completion meters.
Example: Duolingo uses streaks and progress bars to encourage daily use and course completion.
Emotional Design: Building a Connection
What Is Emotional Design? It involves creating UI/UX that triggers emotional responses—joy, satisfaction, trust.
How to Design Emotionally:
Use friendly microcopy (e.g., Slack’s playful messages).
Include delightful animations and transitions.
Apply color psychology to influence feelings (e.g., blue = trust).
Example: Instagram’s heart animation offers instant emotional feedback, strengthening engagement.

What Pride Flags Mean, Part 1: Gender and Attraction
Welcome to the latest installment of my autistic hyperfixation on flags! I wanted to figure out a common language of Colour X means Thing Y. Like how pink is consistently used for feminine.
Having a common language for flag meanings matters because it improves cognitive accessibility of flags. ♿️💙
But I didn't want to be prescriptive about what colours should mean what. Just because I think Thing X should go with Colour Y doesn't mean everybody else would.
So this turned into a descriptive, empirical project. I gathered a data set of 2060 pride flag colour choices to figure out what are the most common colour-meaning combinations. Some of the results:
And here are the abstract modifiers: these are modifiers that were generally shared between the genders and the attractions. For example, black is used to indicate having no gender as well as having no attraction.

METHODS-AT-A-GLANCE
To make the figures above, I assembled a data set of pride flag colours. It contains 2060 colour choices from 624 pride flags, representing 1587 unique colours. Click here for a detailed description of how I gathered and tagged the pride flag colours and tagged them.
For each tag, I converted every colour to okLCH colour space and computed a median colour. OkLCH colour space is an alternative to RGB/hex and HSL/HSV. Unlike RGB/hex and HSL/HSV, okLCH is a perceptual colour space, meaning that it is actually based on human colour perception. 🌈
In okLCH space, a colour has three values:
- Lightness (0-100%): how light the colour is. 100% is pure white.
- Chroma (0-0.37+): how vibrant the colour is. 0 is monochromatic. 0.37 is currently the most vibrant things can get with current computer monitor technologies. But as computer monitor technologies improve to allow for even more vibrant colours, higher chroma values will be unlocked.
- Hue (0-360°): where on the colour wheel the colour goes - 0° is pink and 180° is teal, and colours are actually 180° opposite from their perceptual complements.
The important thing to know is that okLCH Hue is not the same Hue from HSV/HSL - the values are different! (HSL and HSV are a hot mess and do not align with human colour perception!)

MORE RESULTS: COLOUR DISTRIBUTIONS
Back when I started tagging my data, I divided my data into five main chunks: Gender qualities (e.g. masculine, androgynous), Attraction (e.g. platonic, sexual), Values (e.g. community, joy), Disability (e.g. Deaf, blind), and Other.
I'll talk about Disability and Values in future posts! But for an alternate view of the data, here are the full distributions of the colours that were placed in each tag.
They come in three parts: tags I created for Gender, tags for Attraction, and tags from Other. The abstract modifiers are spread between the first two, though their contents transcend Gender and Attraction.
Some distributions have a lot more variance within them than others. Generally speaking, major attraction types tended to have the least variance: sensual attraction is really consistently orange, platonic is really consistently yellow, etc.
Variance and size do not correlate. Many of the smaller tags are quite internally consistent. I don't have a ton of tags in "current gender" but they're all the same dark purple. Xenine/xenogender has a whole bunch of entries, and there's a really big spread from blue to yellow.
Some tags, like intersex as well as kink/fetish show there are a small number of different colours that are very consistently used. Whereas other tags like masculine show a very smooth range - in this case from cyan to purple.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied with how things wound up! 🥳 It makes sense to me that an umbrella term like xenogender would have a lot of variance. What honestly makes me happiest is just how many tags wound up 180 or 90 degrees from their opposites/complements. 🤩
Not everything lined up nicely (the opposite of drag is .... neuroqueer? awkward.) 🤨 Some things lined up in hilarious ways, like how initially I had the opposite of kink/fetish being Christian (amazing.)
But as a whole, there's a lot of structure and logic to where things landed! I hope this makes sense for other people and can help inform both flag making as well as flag interpreting (e.g. writing alt-text for existing flags). 🌈

The unified wave velocity (205.8 km/s) is reflected and that caused to square the velocity (205.8 km/s)^2 = 42683 km/s now the rate (7.1) causes contraction for the lengths but because of the energy reflection the geometrical effects will be reflected also- means the rate (7.1) doesn't cause to contract the length but increase the lengths and by that the velocity 42683 km/s will be 42683 km/s x 7.1 = 300000 km/s (speed of light = C)
Shortly- the wave reflection from Pluto to Venus causes to square the wave velocity and that accelerate the wave velocity to move by speed of light –
Means- the wave reaches Venus moves by speed of light (C=300000 km/s)
The second Reflection (in fact the 3rd reflection)
The unified wave (gravitational wave) reaches to Venus orbit with speed (300000 km/s)- then Venus reflects the unified wave toward Mars- this reflection causes to square the velocity- before the reflection the wave moves by speed of light and after the reflection the speed is squared and the wave shows the value (C^2 squared speed of light) by which the light beam can be created (the sun rays creation)
The idea summary tells
The unified wave is reflected two times in the solar system
In the first time- the unified wave velocity (205.8 km/s) is accelerated to be 300000 km/s (speed of light =C)
In the second time- the unified wave velocity (300000 km/s = speed of light =C) be accelerated to be C^2 (squared speed of light) and the light beam is produced by this value C^2 (squared speed of light)
Now we understand this simple idea- but there are 2 left Major Questions
(1st Question) how the wave velocity (205.8 km/s) can be accelerated to be 300000 km/s (speed of light = C)? by what method the wave is accelerated?
(2nd Question) Are the unified wave reflected two times only in the solar system?
Let's leave the 1st question to discuss later and answer the 2nd question in following,
How many times the unified wave reflected in the solar system?
Three times (by Pluto, by Saturn and by Venus) -while the required is only two times- so why the wave is reflected three times?
Neptune caused negative effect on the energy reflection by Pluto, by that the energy doesn't reach to Venus- that forces Saturn to reflect the wave one more time to do the same job of Pluto reflection
Means- the first reflection by Pluto failed to square the velocity and accelerate the wave motion to move by speed of light- this failure is done by Neptune negative effect on the wave energy- because of that- Saturn does another reflection for the wave energy and by Saturn reflection the wave velocity (205.8 km/s) is squared and the motion is accelerated to be done by speed of light (300000 km/s),
Shortly- in place of one reflection by Pluto, the unified wave is reflected two times by Pluto and by Saturn but these two reflections do only the role of one supposed reflection (from Pluto to Venus)- by this one reflection the unified wave velocity (205.8 km/s) will be accelerated to be speed of light (300000 km/s) and by that the wave reach to Venus moves by speed of light (C=300000 km/s)
Venus reflects the wave again toward Mars (the 3rd reflection), by this reflection the speed of light is squared and produced (C^2= squared speed of light) and from this value (C^2) the light beam is produced (the sun rays is created)

In Lorentz transformations study- there's a major question asks (Can particle own data and dimensions be changed by the high velocity motion?)
Shortly- Lorentz transformation tells– if a particle moves by high velocity motion- this particle own length will be contracted and its time will be dilated and its mass will be increased- these changes are defined by Lorentz transformations and we know these are real changes in this particle own data - BUT
Some researchers tell No Real Changes are done for the particle own data but they are illusions of measurements (means Lorentz transformations measure illusions)
I refuse this opinion - BECAUSE
The Physics Is The Measurements Science And What's Measured Is The Fact
If no real changes are done how the problem of Michelson and Morelly experiment is solved?- also- we can't understand why the synchronous events in one frame can't be synchronous in another (as Einstein stated) where no real change is found for any data- the distances are Not contracted nor the time is dilated nor the mass is increased why the events can NOT be synchronous in any frame?
If the particle own data are measured correctly while it moves by my motion velocity and these measurements are suffered from illusions because the particle moves by high velocity motion relative to my motion velocity that means (I'm the universe reference point)

By the wave revolution the stationary point is created in the revolution center and this point will be the sun (its velocity is 1 km/s=zero approximately) and the moving wave created the solar planets as small waves move by small velocities (or as geometrical points carried by the wave motion) -As a result – a relative motion is created between the moving wave (300000 km/s) and the sun point of space (1km/s)

Because, we need to use the energy and the less amount energy can't be useful and we need massive amount of energy to use it-

The space and time creation is done by the equation (1.16/0.3) x 2π = 24.3
The equation tells, the space is created in curved lines (2π) and the time is created based on the solar day (24 hours) (later the reason will be explained)
Notice-the space is created from the energy (1.16 million km/ second) but the planets are created from the energy (300000 km/s)- the planets are created after the space.
We realize this is the same one light beam and the two velocities are found as a result for the energy consumption in the space creation.

Why Are These Small Waves Required?
Because the velocity 300000 km/s is decreased to Zero by using these small waves and their low velocities- the low velocities are used as steps to decrease the unified wave velocity (300000 km/s) to be (Zero)- this process decreases the velocity gradually from 300000 km/s to Zero depending on these small waves velocities (the planets velocities)
Means- the planets are created for this process to decrease the wave velocity from 300000 km/s to Zero- and The Planet Is A Small Wave Moves By Low Velocity

Three MIT students named 2026 Schwarzman Scholars


Three MIT students — Yutao Gong, Brandon Man, and Andrii Zahorodnii — have been awarded 2025 Schwarzman Scholarships and will join the program’s 10th cohort to pursue a master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
The MIT students were selected from a pool of over 5,000 applicants. This year’s class of 150 scholars represents 38 countries and 105 universities from around the world.
The Schwarzman Scholars program aims to develop leadership skills and deepen understanding of China’s changing role in the world. The fully funded one-year master’s program at Tsinghua University emphasizes leadership, global affairs, and China. Scholars also gain exposure to China through mentoring, internships, and experiential learning.
MIT’s Schwarzman Scholar applicants receive guidance and mentorship from the distinguished fellowships team in Career Advising and Professional Development and the Presidential Committee on Distinguished Fellowships.
Yutao Gong will graduate this spring from the Leaders for Global Operations program at the MIT Sloan School of Management, earning a dual MBA and a MS degree in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on manufacturing and operations. Gong, who hails from Shanghai, China, has academic, work, and social engagement experiences in China, the United States, Jordan, and Denmark. She was previously a consultant at Boston Consulting Group working on manufacturing, agriculture, sustainability, and renewable energy-related projects, and spent two years in Chicago and one year in Greater China as a global ambassador. Gong graduated magna cum laude from Duke University with double majors in environmental science and statistics, where she organized the Duke China-U.S. Summit.
Brandon Man, from Canada and Hong Kong, is a master’s student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, where he studies generative artificial intelligence (genAI) for engineering design. Previously, he graduated from Cornell University magna cum laude with honors in computer science. With a wealth of experience in robotics — from assistive robots to next-generation spacesuits for NASA to Tencent’s robot dog, Max — he is now a co-founder of Sequestor, a genAI-powered data aggregation platform that enables carbon credit investors to perform faster due diligence. His goal is to bridge the best practices of the Eastern and Western tech worlds.
Andrii Zahorodnii, from Ukraine, will graduate this spring with a bachelor of science and a master of engineering degree in computer science and cognitive sciences. OP is right, though! The mirror test is inherently flawed considering that we are using a research method we use for humans - a visual species - for animals that interact with the world in vastly different ways.
It's good to question science that is still evolving - animal cognition is definitely one of those fields where our data is limited and there is room for discussion. It's not anti intellectualism to bring up flaws in animal cognition science and the anthropocentric lens that limits it - it's a discussion we are having right now within the scientific community. That's how science is!
The mirror test was considered initially to be this revolutionary way to determine self awareness in animals and all these big implications of intelligence and ability to percieve and understand ideas of "the self". Yet just recently, ghost crabs and cleaner wrasse also passed the test. So are these species actually super intelligent and self aware even though they're not what we consider to be "intelligent" because they're not charimastic megafauna or socially intelligent mammals?
Is the test actually doing the things it was claiming to do or are we trying to draw conclusions from a shaky methodology that isn't actually acknowldging the subject species' umwelt (how they percieve the world)?
Dolphins are one of the species that people refer to as "self aware" because of the mirror test - but the study has never been consistently replicated in a large sample study of animals. And it doesn't make a lot of sense for an animal that heavily uses acoustic recognition to be as visually inclined as humans are.
The biggest flaw with a lot of animal cognition studies, particularly the "self awareness" research is that we study animals with humans as a baseline of the highest intelligence - which is exactly what OP is trying to say here.

Some scattered thoughts about Wesker's character and STARS
Your worst sin is that you've destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing" - Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Wesker grew up in an environment controlled by Umbrella. I like to think of it as an institute or orphanage. He must have felt lonely. He must have been alone.
This fact is not trivial because loneliness is thematic and yet ambivalent when it comes to Wesker's character. His relationship with other people and humanity as a whole is complex but fundamental to understanding his motivations. We know for a fact that he is not averse to being alone and even enjoys solitary walks through the Arklay forest. He also talks a lot to himself. But is his relation to aloneness one-dimensional?
He was human (and in some ways, he still is even after his death and rebirth). As a consequence, alterity interplay necessarily shaped his identity, even if he himself went so far as to cast away his humanity, deemed a weakness. This credo does not pertain only to Wesker. Alex Wesker, Dr. Marcus, Spencer, William Birkin, Sergei Vladimir... Umbrella's executives and higher-ups regard humanity as a dead end to be overcome with the help of science.
But unlike them, Wesker managed a small family team for almost 3 years. And unlike them, even after his rebirth, Wesker never really works alone.
I like to imagine how much inner conflict and cognitive dissonance the STARS era must have triggered. Can you really select people that you find highly capable, train with them, earn their respect and trust, and not care at all ?
Is it truly possible that he was but a cold monster, conditioned by Umbrella to destroy the world and embody the future of humanity ? An efficient tool that was taught how to identify valuable people and exploit their abilities ? Is Wesker just repeating with others what Spencer did with him ?
It’s an interpretation of the character. I find it too plain for my tastes. Wesker is a man of contradictions. He values freedom, is brilliant, and yet he is never able to think outside Umbrella's conceptual box. He values efficiency and yet seems unable to get rid of Chris and Jill. He obviously craves control and seems wary and distrustful, which is probably a result of Umbrella's smothering grasp on him since childhood, and yet he trusts Ada, Krauser, Excella and other people to carry out his plans, increasing the risk of betrayal. Wesker is multifaceted, and so is his relationship with humanity.
Wesker's education is undoubtedly orchestrated by Umbrella/Spencer. Conceived and planned by Lord Spencer and his colleague Dr Wesker, Albert’s education was designed to make him an active defender of utilitarian philosophy, though devoid of its moral aspect.
I believe the STARS, its inability to let go of the past, particularly Chris, reveals a failure in Spencer's plan.
Even if "little piggies" sounds provocative and unflattering, and even if he evokes "a family reunion" in an ironic way, there is still something along the lines of possessiveness that manifests itself here. When it comes to Chris, Wesker is the most ambivalent, helping him during the events of RE1, lamenting that he "cannot understand" his vision in RE5 and expressing his pride at every encounter.
The point is that Wesker almost never made a choice that wasn't designed or foreseen by Umbrella in his life. Even his suicide and following rebirth, a last-minute plan that was his way out of Umbrella (he symbolically steps on his glasses branded "property of Umbrella"), was overseen by Spencer. But he did choose the STARS members himself with no criteria forced upon him.
When he was given full latitude to build up a team from scratch, he selected talented people, sure, who displayed for most of them an unconventional profile and/or a sense of honor and justice. Chris was kicked out of the USAF, Jill's father is a notorious thief (and herself is suspiciously good at picking locks), Kenneth is a chemist, Richard Aiken lost his sister and wanted to protect others, Rebecca is caring and brilliant,... etc. Wesker's targeted people who were courageous, empathetic, and strong-willed. And yet, at this point, he didn't know what Umbrella's planned to do with them. He chose them freely, with no hidden motive at this point, without Umbrella interfering.
He willingly chose to surround himself with people who absolutely did not share his beliefs. He did NOT choose meek and/or plain people. He COULD have found competent AND cynical, less idealistic, less intelligent, policemen. People whose job was really just a job. But he chose them, introducing a risk factor as he was actually reporting to Umbrella. He chose people who follow their own moral compass, though they are less likely to be manipulated, are more difficult to lie to, and would rather not compromise. People with a sense of justice are often fierce and eager to defend their beliefs even though it's not in their best interest. They could have put Wesker in a delicate position, and, as a matter of fact, Chris, Forest, and Joseph were hated by Brian Irons.
So, why did he do that ?
If you listen attentively to Wesker's soliloquy in RE5, while he tries to pursue Chris as a clumsy octopus-like monster, I believe it makes sense if you consider he sees himself as a Messiah and a Creator.
Wesker states that he hates humanity. But before his experience with STARS, humanity was actually comprising his colleagues within Umbrella. He doesn't know the world even though his denial and inflated ego and probably his own suffering help him believe that he does. Umbrella taught him that people are worth less than nothing. (Though ironically, Umbrella's executives and accomplices, such as Brian Irons, probably reinforced Wesker's belief that humans were to be punished and corrected).
And so, when he loses his mind, he does not ramble, like a classic comic book villain, that humans are stupid or a lost cause. No. He laments that he sees "war and pestilence" wherever he goes. It is very telling : He desperately craves peace and he only sees the world as Umbrella taught him. And it's horrifying. He relishes on being a Creator, a Demiurge. A GOOD one. He wants to punish humanity AND start anew. That's precisely what Uroboros, a never-ending circle of life and destruction, encompasses.
Wesker doesn't only want humanity to face its long overdue punishment ("this winnowing"). He wants humanity to do better, to be closer to perfection, even though his method is totally irrational (as you could argue that he was the one bringing up War and Pestilence at its climax in their universe...).
He hasn't killed Chris, nor Jill, AND he EVEN confesses that he should have killed him YEARS ago. But why does he want his former pointman to understand ? Why is he OBSESSED about Chris "not understanding", if he isn't supposed to survive ?
I think that in Wesker's twisted mind, Chris represents what humanity should be at its best. Wesker fawned over his Tyrant because it was his creation. A new human, created by him, the first step to his new world. But Tyrant is soulless. Chris, Jill, and every member of STARS he chose, trained, and teamed up with, embodied values that he regards as worthy, honorable but not fitted for this corrupted world (according to him). If he calls out Chris on his self-righteousness, it's because Chris does good deeds in an evil world, which Wesker deems worthless because that's inefficient (utilitarian thinking). A drop in the ocean that changes nothing. However, the members of STARS (a name that evokes hope) had a soul. They were drops in the ocean. And they were his.
There is something so enticingly complex about a character who implicitely confesses that the world would be a better place if people were all as good and pure as the STARS members were, while he brutally killed them all in a way that reminds me of the sacrifice of lambs on behalf of a God that is supposed to be fair and good.
He is Frankenstein's beast and a coward and a man that preferred to be cruel (with the intent to be a Savior) than weak (and admitting he was only a pawn in Umbrella's grand scheme of things).
And so, he suffers from chronic backstabber disorder and delusions of grandeur. He believes that he had to escape humanity to punish them and save them, that he had the courage to do what is necessary for the greater good when he is, deep down, just a man. A man who is very angry, very hateful, a coward who walked a path of loneliness because it was much easier than to face the truth : The world can only be painted in shaded of gray and certainly not in black and white. But that would mean throwing away the great destiny that Umbrella designed for him (for Spencer actually, but he realized that at 50 yo...). That would mean that he is just a man, wronged, "manufactured", manipulated and slowly turning into a BOW. Their BOW.
Wesker, who blamed "loathsome humans" for turning the world into a cesspool, was actually one of these humans he so despises, partly because he never really abandoned Umbrella's mindset ("you're just another one of Umbrella's leftover" ie : a thing that belongs to them and doesn't think for himself which is TRUE).
And paradoxically, ironically, he betrayed and murdered in cold blood people that would have helped him make the world a better place.

Writing Notes: Hierarchy of Needs
Abraham Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of human needs has profoundly influenced the behavioral sciences, becoming a seminal concept in understanding human motivation.
The original pyramid comprises 5 levels:
Physiological needs: Basic requirements for survival, such as food, water, shelter, and sleep
Safety needs: Security of body, employment, resources, morality, the family, health, and property
Love and belonging needs: Friendship, family, intimacy, and a sense of connection
Esteem needs: Respect, self-esteem, status, recognition, strength, and freedom
Self-Actualization: The desire to become the best that one can be
Maslow posited that our motivations arise from inherent and universal human traits, a perspective that predated and anticipated evolutionary theories in biology and psychology (Crawford & Krebs, 2008; Dunbar & Barrett, 2007).
Maslow developed his theory during the Second World War, a time of global upheaval and change, when the world was grappling with immense loss, trauma, and transformation. This context influenced Maslow’s emphasis on the individual’s potential for growth, peace, and fulfillment beyond mere survival.
It is noteworthy that Maslow did not actually create the iconic pyramid that is frequently associated with his hierarchy of needs. Researchers believe it was popularized instead by psychologist Charles McDermid, who was inspired by step-shaped model designed by management theorist Keith Davis (Kaufman, 2019).
Over the years, Maslow (1970) made revisions to his initial theory, mentioning that 3 more levels could be added:
cognitive needs,
aesthetic needs, and
transcendence needs (e.g., mystical, aesthetic, sexual experiences, etc.).
Criticisms of the Hierarchy of Needs
Criticism of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs has been a subject of ongoing discussion, with several key limitations identified by scholars and practitioners alike. Understanding these critiques and integrating responses to them is vital for therapists aiming to apply the hierarchy in a modernized way in their practice.
Needs are Dynamic
Critics argue that the original hierarchy does not offer an accurate depiction of human motivation as dynamic and continuously influenced by the interplay between our inner drives and the external world (Freund & Lous, 2012).
While Maslow’s early work suggested that one must fulfill lower levels in order to reach ultimate self-actualization, we now know human needs are not always clearly linear nor hierarchical.
People might experience and pursue multiple needs simultaneously or in a different order than the hierarchy suggests. After all, personal motives and environmental factors constantly interact, shaping how individuals respond to their surroundings based on their past experiences.
Cultural Bias
One of the primary criticisms is the cultural bias inherent in Maslow’s original model. While many human needs can be shared among cultures, different cultures may prioritize certain needs or goals over others (Tay & Diener, 2011).
It’s often argued that Maslow’s emphasis on self-actualization reflects a distinctly Western, individualistic perspective, which may not resonate with or accurately represent the motivational structures in more collectivist societies where community and social connectedness are prioritized.
Empirical Grounding
The hierarchy has also faced scrutiny for its lack of empirical grounding, with some suggesting that there isn’t sufficient research to support the strict ordering of needs (Kenrick et al., 2010).
In practice, this limitation can be addressed by viewing the hierarchy as a descriptive framework rather than a prescriptive one.

Crows are able to look at a handful of four-sided shapes and correctly distinguish those that exhibit geometric regularity from those that don't, according to a provocative new study.
It's the first time a species other than humans has been shown to have this kind of geometric intuition, says Andreas Nieder, a cognitive neurobiologist at the University of Tübingen in Germany.
"Claiming that it is specific to us humans, that only humans can detect geometric regularity, is now falsified," says Nieder. "Because we have at least the crow."
Previous research has demonstrated that regardless of age, culture, or education, humans are really good at noticing geometric regularity in shapes.
Other critters might have an inherent sense of geometry, too, says Nieder, but until now, researchers mostly haven't focused on this ability in their tests of animals' mathematical skills.
"I would never dare to say that this is the only species," he says, "it's just now opening this field of investigation."
He and his colleagues tested the abilities of two carrion crows that live in their lab. Previously, Nieder's group has shown that the crows' counting ability rivals that of toddlers.
These crows "are very tame, so they like to work with us," he says.
The birds' work involves basically playing computer games that are designed to tease out how much they know about math.
For this study, the birds would look at a computer screen and see a group of six shapes. To get a treat of tasty mealworms, they'd have to peck on the shape that was different from the others.
"Initially we presented some very obviously different figures," says Nieder. "For instance, five moons and one flower."
When the crows pecked on the flower shape, they got a snack.
After the birds understood this game, the researchers started showing them sets of shapes that included squares, parallelograms, or irregular quadrilaterals.
The crows might see, for example, five perfect squares along with one four-sided figure that was just slightly off.
What the researchers wanted to know is whether or not "with these quadrilaterals, they could still continue to find the outlier, even though the outlier was looking perceptually very similar to the other five regular shapes," explains Nieder.
Yes. It turns out, the crows could.
In the journal Science Advances, the researchers describe a series of tests showing that crows clearly had a sense of right angles, parallel lines, and symmetry.

I'm going a little crazy after being told what happened to the annual science fair at my old middle school
so we used to have to conceptualize our own experiments and take them from start to finish. and the range of experiments went from sometimes silly ("what happens when you water a plant with gatorade?") to "I'm going to sleep deprive all my friends and give them a series of cognitive tests and see what happens" (I was a test subject)
and it was this necessary and pure curiosity of kids looking at something and coming up with a question, and then designing the process by which you test that question. it was the most basic demonstration of the scientific process, and it was sometimes maddening (like science) and sometimes fun! (like science)
so the parents and teachers of this incredibly wealthy Silicon Valley zip code decided with almost unanimous agreement that they were scrapping the science fair. in the place of individual, natural-world driven experiments, the kids will now form teams in which they have to manufacture, brand, and market a signature ice cream flavor.
individual students don't do everything from concept to completion, they're split into teams for "marketing" and "sales" and "recipe testing" - basically compartmentalizing this whole process in the same way that tech companies function.
like I don't know how to talk about this without it sounding like the most heavy-handed, ridiculously made up shit to make a point---it's one school and one anecdote, but that's where the wealthiest parents in the US are at in terms of devaluing any subject (art, literature, science of the natural world) if it does not train their child for the exact tech/sales-centered career path that their parents have

Week 6: Mending Over Buying
If you told your grandparents that mending clothes is now considered a “climate-positive action,” they’d probably laugh. Back in the day, fixing up torn clothes wasn’t some bold environmental statement; it was just common sense. Clothes were expensive, and people made them last. Every household had a sewing kit, often stored in an old cookie tin on top of a cupboard. Mending was simply a necessity.
Fast Fashion: Cheap, Trendy, and Designed to Fall Apart
Fast forward to today, and things have completely flipped. Thanks to fast fashion, clothes have never been cheaper or more disposable. Why bother sewing a ripped shirt when you can replace it for the price of a cup of coffee? Fashion brands flood stores with trendy, poorly made clothes, designed to fall apart quickly so you’ll keep buying more (Bau 2017). As a result, the fashion industry generates more than 92 million tons of waste each year, while clothing production consumes approximately 79 trillion liters of water (Niinimäki et al. 2020). The industry create new styles at a ridiculous pace, encouraging us to constantly refresh our wardrobes and throw out the “old” stuff (even if it’s only been worn a few times).
Fast Fashion’s Biggest Scam: Making Us Stop Caring
But here’s the real problem: fast fashion hasn’t just made clothes disposable, it’s made our connection to them disposable too. Most of us have no idea how our clothes are made, who makes them, or what it takes to create a single garment. More disturbingly, we don’t care. When something tears or wears out, we don’t think about fixing it because we’ve been trained to see it as replaceable. And that’s exactly how fashion brands want it. This mindset comes from advertising that promotes the idea that new is always better than old (Bau 2017). The less we care, the more we consume.
As The Guardian puts it, our disconnect from the things we own has left many of us feeling alienated. Karl Marx once said that for work to be fulfilling, it has to be meaningful, honest, and effective. The same goes for the things we own (Martin 2021). When we replace well-made, personal belongings with mass-produced junk, we lose our sense of connection to the things around us. We don’t see clothes as valuable anymore, just as stuff to cycle through. It’s all about chasing the next trend and never actually be satisfied with what we already have.

Mending is a Quiet Rebellion
Mending is a quiet act of rebellion against all of this. It’s a way of saying, "No, I don’t need to keep buying just because a brand told me to." When you repair your clothes, you’re taking control. You’re refusing to throw something away just because a tiny rip appeared. And honestly? Mended clothes look cool. Visible stitches, patches, and embroidery make each piece unique; something mass production can’t replicate (Jones & Girouard 2021). It’s not just about making clothes last longer; it’s about rejecting the idea that you need to buy new things all the time to feel stylish.
The fashion industry thrives on making us feel like we’re always behind, always needing more (Williams 2022). But what if we stopped playing along? Mending is not only about sustainability but also about taking back power from an industry that survives by making us feel inadequate.
So grab a needle. Repair the damage; not just to your clothes, but to the way we see fashion itself.

When sound waves reach the inner ear, neurons there pick up the vibrations and alert the brain. Encoded in their signals is a wealth of information that enables us to follow conversations, recognize familiar voices, appreciate music, and quickly locate a ringing phone or crying baby.
Neurons send signals by emitting spikes — brief changes in voltage that propagate along nerve fibers, also known as action potentials. Remarkably, auditory neurons can fire hundreds of spikes per second, and time their spikes with exquisite precision to match the oscillations of incoming sound waves.
With powerful new models of human hearing, scientists at MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research have determined that this precise timing is vital for some of the most important ways we make sense of auditory information, including recognizing voices and localizing sounds.
The open-access findings, reported Dec. 4 in the journal Nature Communications, show how machine learning can help neuroscientists understand how the brain uses auditory information in the real world. MIT professor and McGovern investigator Josh McDermott, who led the research, explains that his team’s models better-equip researchers to study the consequences of different types of hearing impairment and devise more effective interventions.
Science of sound
The nervous system’s auditory signals are timed so precisely, researchers have long suspected that timing is important to our perception of sound. Sound waves oscillate at rates that determine their pitch: Low-pitched sounds travel in slow waves, whereas high-pitched sound waves oscillate more frequently. The auditory nerve that relays information from sound-detecting hair cells in the ear to the brain generates electrical spikes that correspond to the frequency of these oscillations. “The action potentials in an auditory nerve get fired at very particular points in time relative to the peaks in the stimulus waveform,” explains McDermott, who is also associate head of the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences.
This relationship, known as phase-locking, requires neurons to time their spikes with sub-millisecond precision. But scientists haven’t really known how informative these temporal patterns are to the brain. Beyond being scientifically intriguing, McDermott says, the question has important clinical implications: “If you want to design a prosthesis that provides electrical signals to the brain to reproduce the function of the ear, it’s arguably pretty important to know what kinds of information in the normal ear actually matter,” he says.
This has been difficult to study experimentally; animal models can’t offer much insight into how the human brain extracts structure in language or music, and the auditory nerve is inaccessible for study in humans. So McDermott and graduate student Mark Saddler PhD ’24 turned to artificial neural networks.
Artificial hearing
Neuroscientists have long used computational models to explore how sensory information might be decoded by the brain, but until recent advances in computing power and machine learning methods, these models were limited to simulating simple tasks. “One of the problems with these prior models is that they’re often way too good,” says Saddler, who is now at the Technical University of Denmark. For example, a computational model tasked with identifying the higher pitch in a pair of simple tones is likely to perform better than people who are asked to do the same thing. “This is not the kind of task that we do every day in hearing,” Saddler points out. “The brain is not optimized to solve this very artificial task.” This mismatch limited the insights that could be drawn from this prior generation of models.
To better understand the brain, Saddler and McDermott wanted to challenge a hearing model to do things that people use their hearing for in the real world, like recognizing words and voices. That meant developing an artificial neural network to simulate the parts of the brain that receive input from the ear. The network was given input from some 32,000 simulated sound-detecting sensory neurons and then optimized for various real-world tasks.
The researchers showed that their model replicated human hearing well — better than any previous model of auditory behavior, McDermott says. In one test, the artificial neural network was asked to recognize words and voices within dozens of types of background noise, from the hum of an airplane cabin to enthusiastic applause. Under every condition, the model performed very similarly to humans.
When the team degraded the timing of the spikes in the simulated ear, however, their model could no longer match humans’ ability to recognize voices or identify the locations of sounds. For example, while McDermott’s team had previously shown that people use pitch to help them identify people’s voices, the model revealed that that this ability is lost without precisely timed signals. “You need quite precise spike timing in order to both account for human behavior and to perform well on the task,” Saddler says. That suggests that the brain uses precisely timed auditory signals because they aid these practical aspects of hearing.
The team’s findings demonstrate how artificial neural networks can help neuroscientists understand how the information extracted by the ear influences our perception of the world, both when hearing is intact and when it is impaired. “The ability to link patterns of firing in the auditory nerve with behavior opens a lot of doors,” McDermott says.
“Now that we have these models that link neural responses in the ear to auditory behavior, we can ask, ‘If we simulate different types of hearing loss, what effect is that going to have on our auditory abilities?’” McDermott says. “That will help us better diagnose hearing loss, and we think there are also extensions of that to help us design better hearing aids or cochlear implants.” For example, he says, “The cochlear implant is limited in various ways — it can do some things and not others. What’s the best way to set up that cochlear implant to enable you to mediate behaviors? You can, in principle, use the models to tell you that.”
