#Danny is 17 but his ghost half still looks 14

Okay so im curious. As someone who has dyed their own hair many a time and knows intimately how hard it is to get bright colors in dark hair, does danny bleach his hair before he puts the red in? This was the au where no one will accept that he died and that his core is part of him now, so does he use his phantom form? If he doesn't, does his hair just eventually stop growing back black? If he does use phantom, does the dye job effect what color his hair is in it?
Im so fucking interested in the mechanics of how he got it to be so red.
Also: how old is he in this?
So there's deff a little ghost going on and some comic/cartoon magic lol, but he does bleach it!
Danny stared at his hair in the mirror of the school locker room he had snuck into. He hadn’t even gotten inside in a ghostly way, he had just walked in as school was letting out and hid until everyone left. Now the school was quiet and dark in way that was frankly a little terrifying. He was hoping his powers would help him get back out when he needed them to. They weren’t exactly… reliable yet. They also wouldn’t help him fix his hair. Bleaching it had been… well, a success, Danny guessed. No one would recognize him now. No one would even want to look at him for long. His once black hair was now a sickly sort of greenish blond. The spot of white somehow made the rest of it look even worse by comparison. Danny really couldn’t just let it stay like this. People would ask even more questions if he went around looking like a half done dye job.
Which also answers, yes, he does use his powers! The more he does the better he feel and the less the ghostliness spreads into his living form. I'm not sure by the time he gets to Gotham how much of his hair is still black. It might only be the bottom part which is why he shaves it closer.
I am very tempted to have it effect his ghost coloring to, play into much of the ghost form being mental.
Age wise? er... 14-17. I'm not sure yet! I think maybe 15 but masked up and with practice he comes across more at 16 or a baby faced 17.

DP x MCU crossover
Sometime after Howard and Maria Stark’s death, Hydra decides to try and make a clone of Tony Stark, that’s infused with Super Soldier serum. They were hoping to get a super smart super soldier that they could control.
And thus Danny was born.
At some point when he’s like 2 or 3 one of the Hydra agents whose been his handler since he was born grows a conscious after witnessing the most recent experiment the other scientists in the lab put Danny through. They take Danny and run away from the lab. They don’t get away clean tho, they had to fight their way out of the lab and they were injured in the process. They wind up in Amity Park with baby Danny and come across the Fenton Parents. They hand Danny over to them and tell them to protect and look after the kid. And then they die.
The Fenton parents adopt Danny and raise him as their own. Danny grows up not knowing he’s adopted or that he’s a clone and a super soldier. The ghost portal accident happens when he’s 14 like cannon. The reason he survived and only half died is because of the super soldier serum in his blood.
Eventually, after the whole events of the Danny Phantom series has passed (minus Phantom Planet because fuck that horrible ending to the series). Danny, after defeating Pariah Dark, is now the king of the ghost zone. He still doesn’t realize he’s a clone of Tony Stark. Despite the fact that he looks exactly like a 17 year old version of the man!!!
And then New York happens. A portal opens up in the skies above New York, and aliens come pouring out of it! You bet your ass Danny hightailed it over to New York to help out the group of heroes that were trying to stop the aliens. He’s super hyped to fight aliens!!! He’s just having a blast zooming through the skies of New York, around skyscrapers, throwing punches and ecto-blasts at aliens, helping out the other heroes.
Meanwhile every time he helps one of the Avengers they all double take when they finally get a look at his face. Cause like yes this floating glowing child has glowing green eyes and Snow White hair, but the rest of his face looks like a very young Tony Stark. After each encounter with the boy the different Avengers call Tony over the coms to ask his status and to reassure themselves that Tony hadn’t been de-aged and given super powers mid battle.
Tony is the last one of them that meets Danny. He’s super annoyed at the fact everyone keeps calling him over the coms to ask his status. Like yeah he’s not a super soldier and doesn’t have powers, but neither does Romanoff or Barton!!! And unlike them he has his own super suit to protect him. So why is everyone calling in to check on him?!!!
And then finally Danny comes zooming around a building chasing after Loki’s chariot, shouting sarcastic quips at the god, while firing green blasts from his fists. And Tony just kind of blue screens for a minute. Jarvis has to take over piloting the suit for a minute while Tony reboots. He’s def got the surprised Pikachu face going on. Finally he reboots but Danny’s already flown off to deal with something else.
The battle comes to an end, the portal closes, the world is safe, and all the Avengers all head towards Stark tower. Danny sees them and where they’re headed and decides to meet them there. He’s been the only super hero around for a while and he wants to actually properly interact with these new hero’s!
Imagine his shock when he actually finally comes face to face with Tony Stark and finally realizes how much he looks like the man. He starts panicking thinking his mom had an affair with the man 17 years ago and just passed him off as Jack Fenton’s son.
Absolute chaos ensues as assumptions are made. DNA tests happen. They realize that no he is not Tony’s kid, he’s Tony’s clone. More assumptions are made. No body is having a good time.

Wayne Spirit Au (now)
IDEA
So, if the Infinite Realms is basically a connection for many many many dimensions do you think Danny would go to the dc dimension after realizing what this means
Like imagine dc is also a fandom in the ‘Danny Phantom’ universe that Danny is a big fan of. He would never think that such a world exists but the idea of it is so cool, and he wish he can go to a world such as that.
But that was before he kind-of-sort-of-possibly-died-and-is-now-currently-half-dead-and-would-you-look-at-that-he-became-ghost-king-what-a-small-world-we-live-in
well, it’s about to get smaller
Now when he finds out that the Infinite Realms is a connection to other realms, he doesn’t think much of it because he thinks it’s like worlds that have a boy Sam or Mr. Lance as president kind of thing. He doesn’t think much of it until he realizes the extent of what “dimensions” means
Finding out that one of your childhood heroes are real in a different world literally blew his mind
So, imagine this young teenage Ghost King DC nerd willingly going to the dc universe to geek out and possible spook his heroes for the heck of it
Oh! IDEA!!!!!
What if he goes to the dc!universe back and forth where to him it would be like a day and it would be weeks or even years in the dc!universe so he would be young even if years pass by. The heroes are being haunted by this weird ghost kids for years!
GASP
WAIT
What if the Bats were his favorite heroes?
Like imagine an excited Danny going to Gotham expecting to see Batman but came during the time when Bruce was still a child and was disappointed, like, he wanted to see big bad batman not a child >:0
But every time he comes back, he would just like watch over Bruce thinking like how this kid couldn’t possibly be Batman while also getting attached to the child Bruce. Durning the night he would tuck him in tighter, hum a tone when their alone or blowing cold air his way when its summertime. The little things.
Bruce thinks it’s his imaginary friend or like the spirit of Gotham
(shot i made another idea in an idea but i’ll come back to that later)
Danny comes back one day to find out it’s been days since the murder of the Wayne’s, and he’s excited to see how the Batman comes to life only to see a devastated crying and depressed Bruce.
that’s when he realized he was waiting for a murder in order to have a child-like enjoyment of seeing one of his childhood heroes for the price of a child to lose their parents
he made a mistake
he wants to fix it but Clockwork refused point blank that he can’t change the past, however, he won’t stop him from taking any action after as whatever he does will affect this universes even more,
After that Danny made it his mission to bring Bruce comfort and protect him from any types of threats from greedy rich higher ups to thieves coming to steal from the Wayne Mannor. He comes back and forth to his world and this world to look after Bruce and learns how the character in his comic book pages became a person he cares for.
He watches him leave to train
He watches him come back
He watches him become Batman
He watches him become a father
 (From there I don’t know if Danny would change major things like Jason’s death or even Bruce’s journey through time, but I’ll like to think he does something when it comes to find Damian or even bring in Tim earlier rather than letting him go through that rollercoaster ride he had called a ‘personal life’)
(And yes through this all Danny is still a teenager but he can be around 17-19ish by the time Damian’s 14 or so)
Danny became something of a Wayne protector and Bruce knows that something/someone is keeping him safe as both Bruce and Batman and just let it be. This spirit or thing was there since his childhood so he has a certain attachment to whatever good will this spirit was providing him and pass down the knowledge to Dick and then his children when he notices that the spirit was protecting or helping his children as well
Like:
“B, I didn’t know you have a great singing voice!”
Bruce paused from his newspaper and looked up. “What do you mean?”
Dick pop a piece of bacon in his mouth before talking again, food flying everywhere. “You were humming me to sleep before your patrol!”
“Mouth close Master Dick,” Alfried wiped the counter. He looked at Bruce with a raised eyebrow. “I wasn’t aware Master Bruce had to time to see the young master to bed.”
Bruce took only a second to understand. “Ah. No that wasn’t me. It seems our littler friend likes you chum.”
“Friend?”
“There are many things you must learn when living in the Wayne Manor Master Dick. Learning to find a little help now and again without one of us at present is also one of the number of things you will expecting while at your stay.”

Offspring of My Ectoplasm. My child.
Summary: Based on Phantom Offspring by LightSage89. Featuring unexpected acquisition of ghost baby (because ghost biology is weird) and cute dad Danny.
Word count: 5,081
Also on A03 and Fanfiction.net
Note: So this is the thing I posted about earlier today. @floralflowerpower, @mymadmedleyw @jadenoryuu @chaos-is-my-lifeblood
So do you ever do that thing where you read someone else’s fic and daydream about how you’d continue it for months? Just me then?
This idea is based on this story. Phantom Offspring by LightSage89. @light-eco-sage
From the summary of that story. “Every three years, ghosts enter a reproductive cycle. It has been three years since the Portal Accident [age 17], and Danny enters his first reproductive cycle without knowing it. One would think without a ghost for a mate, nothing would come of it, but ghost biology is a little stranger than that.” So basically by the end of the story, through weird ghostly asexual reproduction, Danny ends up with nine offspring, eight animal-like ghosts and one phantom (a species of ghost). Phantoms are mischievous, small, and completely invisible. These spirits are a little more intelligent than animal-like ghosts. They can generally understand speech but aren’t able to produce sound, much less speak. For ghosts produced this way, the offspring generally leave right after ‘hatching’ and so the spawning ghost doesn’t have any parental responsibilities to them. So all of Danny’s brood leaves and he moves on with his life. My idea starts seven or so years later when Danny is in his mid-twenties.
Danny’s duties as future ghost king have him spending a lot of time in the ghost zone. He visits different realms - like Dora’s Kingdom, the Far Frozen, the Acropolis of Athens - to learn about the zone’s history and culture. He establishes relations with other areas, making more allies and learning everything that he can.
One day, when he’s in the Acropolis for a multi-day festival, he runs into a familiar ghost. A little phantom literally flies right into his head, ruffling his hair playfully. Danny instantly recognizes the small spirit as one of his. It’s one of his phantoms, in fact the phantom from his first nesting. Danny’s eyes light up, excited to see the little ghost after so long.
The phantom hangs around for a while, generally causing mischief as all phantoms tend to do. The presence warms Danny’s heart but at the same time… it stings. He knows the little ghost won’t hang around for long. Anytime he’d run into his offspring before, they never had. His phantom would likely move on by the morning.
But that is not what happens. At breakfast the next morning, a mischievous ghost knocks over his cup. Danny blinks in surprise, recognizing the being. His phantom is still here. The small ghost continues following him around for the rest of the day and the next. It gets underfoot at the market, steals his food, hides his shoes. The phantom makes all sorts of trouble but Danny’s core flutters happily as an invisible form presses into his chest. A presence brushes his hand. Tiny fingers grip his hair. Actually…
That’s strange. Though able to interact with the world, phantoms don’t have defined forms. He shouldn’t be able to feel hands in his hair, feet standing on his shoulders. But Danny brushes off the oddity. He goes to sleep with the little phantom pressed into his chest.
Danny wakes up with a small, visible figure tucked under his chin. The half ghost blinks, taking in the ghost. It’s in the shape of a person with a head, arms, and legs, even if only as tall as his hand. The hair is white, most of the body black. And… Danny’s breath catches as the little green eyes look up at him. It looks like him, like Danny himself, except at 14. A miniature version of him as a teen.
Eyes wide, Danny tentatively reaches for the ghost. His fingers brush and… he recognizes the presence, the energy, the vague emotions churning under his touch. It’s… it’s his phantom. Except completely visible.
Danny quickly stands, picking up the small ghost and holding it to his chest. The phantom wiggles, trying to escape.
“Hey. Hey. Calm down. I need to find out what happened to you.” The man pleads.
The phantom stopped at the words, relaxing into his hold.
Danny finds Pandora and anxiously asks for an explanation.
“It manifested.” The woman peers down at the phantom with some surprise.
“Manifested?” Danny asked.
A nod. “That is when a phantom takes on a physical appearance. It is not very common, but does tend to happen when a phantom spends prolonged time with its maker. Most will take on their spawner’s form, though miniature.”
Danny looks down at his offspring. Well, that is definitely true. “So… is this permanent or….”
Pandora chuckles. “Do not worry. This normally does not last long. It will get bored soon, wander off, and cease to be your shadow.”
Something in Danny stings at the thought. He absently ruffles the phantom’s hair, which wiggles again before breaking out of his hold and flying off.
Danny’s heart sinks. He goes back to the festivities. Except his phantom returns less than an hour later, just as visible as before. The small ghost flutters around him, leaving and coming back, making mischief as always. But that night, Danny still falls asleep with his offspring close to his core.
Sometime later, Danny leaves the Acropolis and the phantom goes with him. Danny stops in his lair briefly before planning to go back home, through the portal. The small ghost follows, excitedly buzzing around the room, investigating and knocking things over.
The half ghost rolls his eyes at the mess before chuckling as the phantom tangles itself in the blanket on his couch. “Tuck was right. You really do take after me.” Something in Danny aches at the words.
The phantom zips out of the blanket before running into a framed photo on one of the end tables and falling onto the wooden surface. For once, the small ghost stays still, just staring at the picture.
Danny approaches, kneeling to see the picture. The corner of his lip turns up. “That’s Sam, my wife.” He looks at his offspring. “Do you remember her? She was there when you hatched.”
The little ghost does not respond, not even with a nod. But for just a moment, something sparks in the eyes, recognition.
The half ghost watches for another few minutes as his phantom explores. Then, the small ghost darts in front of him, rubbing up against his chest. There’s…. an emotion communicated there, some type of affection. Danny’s heart clenches as he gently wraps his hand around the ghost.
“I have to go home now.” He says softly. “Back to the human world. To my friends and… family.” He stumbles on the word, because… isn’t the ghost he’s holding family too? “You probably don’t know this but… I’m half human. I’m not a full ghost like you are. So you can’t come with me.” His shoulders fall. “Not that you probably want to.”
The little ghost shifts under his hand and Danny lifts it. But his phantom doesn’t fly away. Instead, it tilts its head to look up at the half ghost. Danny feels his heart melt, even as his eyes start watering. “I loved getting to see you these past few days so much. I… God… I’ve missed you and your siblings so much.”
That is the problem with being half human. Most ghosts don’t care about their offspring, not the ones produced without a partner. But for Danny… every time he has to capture an animal-like ghost in Amity, every time a mischievous phantom drifts through the portal, he thinks about them. He wonders where his offspring are, how they’re doing. “I figured I’d never see you again. But… you’re here. And that made me so happy.”
Danny sighs, pausing for a moment as the little ghost hovers in front of him. “I’ll be back in a few days to visit the Far Frozen.” He looks down. “I’ll understand if you’re not here when I come back. I know how phantoms are.” He reaches forward, ruffling the fluffy white hair. “So bye, little guy. Maybe I’ll see you around.”
The small ghost presses into Danny’s hand. And for just a moment, the half ghost feels a hum, a buzz like a core purring. But the feeling vanishes. He stands, floating to the door and closing it. He pats the opening of the lair; it will let the little phantom leave if it wants to. But… “I hope you’re still here when I come back.”
Danny leaves, heart hurting despite his excitement to see Sam and his other loved ones.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three days later, Danny returns. He opens the door to his lair, expecting an empty room but… there, sitting on his couch, still visible, is the little phantom.
The half ghost’s eyes light up, joy sparking. He grins, scooping up his offspring in a hug without thinking. The small ghost accepts; for just a second, equal excitement brushes Danny’s core from the outside. “Come on. We’re going to the Far Frozen, Buddy.”
The phantom hovers up, sitting on his shoulder. Danny flies to the icy realm for a few days of study. The little ghost stays near him all this while.
This continues for several weeks. Every time Danny returns to the Ghost Zone, his little phantom is still there, still visible. His offspring is his constant companion. He talks to the small ghost. Even if it can’t respond, he knows it listens, maybe even understands. Danny eats his meals with it. He even tries to play with it- tag, simple hand games, with various improvised toys. But the small ghost has little interest. Danny’s heart swells with growing affection all the while.
But… things are not all well. Other ghosts look at the pair oddly. Eyes narrow in judgment, flicker away in suspicion. It makes Danny’s stomach churn. Sure, Pandora said that phantoms manifesting are rare. And yeah, no ghost Danny knows ever treats their single-parent offspring like this, so affectionately. But this can’t be that odd.
Dora approaches Danny, the next time he is in her kingdom.
Danny sits under a tree with his legs splayed in front of him, the small phantom facing him. He forms a tiny marble of ice in his hand and rolls it towards his offspring. “Come on. Catch it.” He encourages.
The little phantom just stares at the marble, uncomprehending. The ball rolls, coming to a stop between its own splayed legs.
“Now roll it back to me.” Danny waves with his hand, showing the action.
The small ghost looks up, head tilting as if confused.
“Sir Phantom.” Dora interrupts. “May I speak with you?”
“In a bit.” Danny waves her off. “I’m trying to get this one to play with me.” His head turns back to the smallest ghost. “Let’s try again.” The man grabs the marble before gently rolling it back to his miniature look-alike. “You can do it. Catch it.” He tries to spur on the little ghost. The ball rolls to a stop and curiously, the phantom reaches forward to take it. “Yes! That’s it! Now roll it back.” Instead, the small being grabs the marble and darts away.
Danny deflates with a sigh. “We’ll try again later.” He mutters.
After a pause, Dora sits down beside him. “Your offspring is quite handsome.” She starts. “A very fine specimen, for a phantom.”
The half ghost turns, raising a brow at her before his expression softens. “Yeah. The little guy’s great.” His voice rings out with affection before grinning. “Takes right after me, huh?”
Dora doesn’t respond positively, as Danny expected. “Sir Phantom, my trusted knight.” She pauses, her expression turning serious. “I fear… you are becoming too attached.”
The halfa’s eyes narrow. “Queen Dorathea.” He sees her flinch in surprise, hurt at his use of her full name and title. “What is that supposed to mean?”
The queen visibility fights not to slump. “I mean no offense. I simply do not wish for you to get hurt.”
“By my attachment… to my own offspring?” He frowns, severe.
“You must understand. Phantoms are not like us. They are flighty little things. They go where they please, when they please, causing mischief.” She looks in the direction the small ghost had flown. “Yes, your phantom is a cute little thing and its continued presence is an exciting delight. But you must realize it is temporary.”
Danny’s shoulders fall. “I know. Pandora told me that but…” He balls his fists, sounding resolute. “I’m just trying to make the most of the time we’ve got.”
“Are you?” Dora raises a brow, expression hardening. “Your behavior does not strike me as that of maker to offspring. It seems to be quite parental.”
The half ghost stiffens at the word. Parental. No, that isn't… that’s not what he's doing. And yet…. He bits his lip.
“So you do not refute my words.” The queen states after searching his face. She then sighs. “Daniel. I fear that you are setting yourself up for pain. Phantoms are not like us.” She again emphasizes. “They are simple, coreless, unchanging beings.” Her eyes bore into him. “They do not speak, they do not grow, they do not change. And it can be guaranteed, they do not stay.”
Danny’s heart twists at the words and yet, anger flickers in him. “What are you implying Dora?”
She maintains his hard gaze, her own eyes narrowing into draconian slits. “Offspring are not children. No amount of desire will make them so.” Instantly, her pupils round again, a grieved look covering her face.
The expression douses Danny’s anger, like water poured on a fire. “Dora?”
She looks down. “I only wish to save you from pain, as I have experienced.”
A pause. “What happened?”
“Centuries ago….” Dora starts, closing her eyes. “I had a phantom who manifested.” A soft smile graces her face. “She was a beautiful little girl. Little blonde pigtails, the cutest dimple. She was the light of my afterlife, for the time she was with me. Curious, Affectionate. She followed me everywhere I went. She was my little girl, my little Estrella. I named her and she came flying whenever I called to her. I began to hope….” Her voice lowered. “They say that if fate is particularly generous, if parent and phantom offspring agree, then… there might be a transformation.”
“Transformation?” Danny asks, tentatively.
“A miraculous change. From mere offspring into… child. A child of the same kind as their maker.” Her shoulders fall at the word, tears welling in her eyes. “I wished to be parent. So I named my would-be child. I set up a nursery, had clothing made. I showered my Estrella with affection and she reciprocated. She loved her toys. She ate from my plate. She allowed me to dress her. I thought… I thought we would begin our new afterlife together.” A tear spills down her face. “I thought we agreed but…”
Danny’s heart falls. “What happened?” He asks, even as dread pools in his stomach.
“We did not agree.” Dora says simply. There is a long pause, her lip pinched tightly closed. Then… “She disappeared. I know not whether she simply became invisible again or… faded. But… I never saw my little girl again.”
The pair stare down, neither speaking. Danny’s mind crowds with thoughts, pain spiking through his heart as his own little phantom’s face sparks in his mind.
“I would never wish that pain on any soul.” Dora vows. “Daniel… Please, listen to one with experience. I warn you to save you that same sorrow and grief.”
Danny does not meet her eyes for a long while, staring towards the castle. A small black and white figure darts towards them before slowing. Danny’s little phantom. The ghost holds… a pink flower, which it drops into Danny’s lap before landing on his shoulder and nuzzling his cheek.
The half ghost moves a hand up, to cup his offspring. “Dora. I…I understand what you’re saying but… getting to know this little guy, no matter how long it lasts… I know it’s worth it.”
Dora’s face is thoughtful for a long moment before softening. “I hope then that his presence brings you joy, no matter what the outcome.”
Danny brings his hand forward to ruffle the phantom’s hair. “Thanks Dora.” He looks down at the phantom, something in Dora’s words sparking in his mind. His… He should probably stop calling his offspring an it; the little phantom does look male, like a boy. “Come on, little man. I’m ready to get some food.”
The pair fly off, back towards the castle. Danny eats and the small ghost sits with him, mostly playing with the food but… to the half ghost’s pleasant surprise, his offspring tries a few bites.
Danny smiles proudly, even as he cleans off the food-covered face. “You made a mess there, huh?”
Dora’s words still ring in his head, a bittersweet feeling crowding his heart. Still… no matter what, he will make the most of this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another trip back through the portal. Mostly happy days with his friends and family. Lingering sadness too and worry that the next he ventures back into the Ghost Zone, the little phantom will be gone.
Still… eventually, Danny has to go back. More duties to attend to, more visits to make, this time to the Far Frozen. To his relief, his offspring is still waiting in his lair. The half scoops up his phantom in a hug. But… Dora’s words…
‘Phantoms are not like us. They do not speak. They do not change. And they do not stay.’
Danny tightens his hold slightly. No. None of that mattered. He loved… he loved the little guy, no matter what he was or what he was not, no matter what he could or could not do. But that last bit, the thought of him leaving… It hurt, deep in Danny’s soul.
The man reassures himself. He’ll be okay with just this, just a few weeks with his offspring. With just being followed around by the silent, unchanging presence. It’s enough. It has to be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny sits around a fire in the Far Frozen. He watches two yetis with a smaller one between them, their child. One scoops the young yeti into their arms, tickling the little one’s belly who giggles. And something in Danny aches at the sight. Two parents with their child. Their kid.
Earlier in the week, when he’d been home, he and Sam had talked. They’d talked about his phantom manifesting, Dora’s words, the other ghost’s reactions. They’d talked about Dora’s accusation, his ‘parental’ behavior.
And they’d talked about wanting kids. And they agreed. They both wanted kids but… because of his half-ghost status, Danny can never have children with a human partner, never have children with Sam. He watches across the way as one of the adults plays some type of hand game with their child. That…that will never be him and Sam. And it’s Danny’s fault, because he’s infertile.
Except… he looks down at his little phantom. That’s not true. He’s plenty fertile; curse weird ghostly biology. He’s had no problem producing offspring of his own ectoplasm. But… there is a difference between an offspring and a child.
Danny closes his eyes, breathing. Because, damn it, Dora was right. He wants more, more than just this. He doesn’t want what is essentially a loyal, excited pet following him around for a few weeks. He wants a child that he could watch grow up, a child that he and Sam can raise and love. He wants… ‘I wished to be parent’ Dora had said. That was what Danny himself wants now.
But….Danny pulls his phantom to his chest, kissing him on the head. His heart aches. He loves this little ghost so much. So much. That affection swells in him. He would give his life to protect his little one. He can imagine. The little ghost in his arms but different. A toddler’s frame and size. Chubby hands. Playing patty cake. A child’s laughter. He’d… he’d give his soul to hear that sound from the mouth of the small body pressed into him. But…
Offspring are not children. No amount of desire will make them so.
Dora is right. His desire will not change reality. It won’t change the being in his arms into a different type of creature altogether. And it’s wrong to want his offspring to be something he can not be. His heart twists guiltily at thought. He can’t force that on his little one. He won’t. He won’t expect, demand, beg, or wish for him to be anything more than what he is.
Danny kisses the little head again. “I love you. I love you so much.”
The small phantom presses into him, wrapping small arms around his fingers. Something… new flutters in the feelings coming from the ghost, a cacophony of emotions. And there, under his fingers, sparks the faint buzz of a core.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny brings the little ghost back through the portal with him and calls Sam. If they stay in his parents’ lab, near the portal, the little one should be okay. Minutes later, his wife arrives. And…
The little phantom darts forward, curious and then excited when he recognizes the woman.
Sam laughs as the little guy investigates her hair. “You do look just like your daddy.”
Danny blinks, startled at the words before relaxing. They’d joked about that when he was younger. But now…. Daddy… the word rings differently in his heart. Now that he’s made the decision, now that he’s promised to love no matter what.
Sam tickles the little ghost, who rolls in the air, laughing without sound. She turns to her husband. “What’s his name?”
Again, the half ghost is given pause. “His name?”
“You haven’t named him.” His wife crosses her arms.
Danny rubs the back of his neck. “Honestly… Pandora said this would be temporary. So… I hadn’t bothered with it yet.” His voice quiets at the reminder. He hadn’t bothered because this wasn't going to last. Any day now, the little guy would get bored and Danny would never see him again but….
Guilt swells in his heart.Still…his little one deserves a name, doesn’t he?
His eyes trace the small body; his phantom does look just like him, like Phantom. “I’m thinking Jackson.” Danny blurts out.
Sam raises a brow before laughing. “Really? After your dad?”
“It just sounds right.” Danny doesn’t say how excited his dad would be to have his first grandchild named after him. Because… grandchild… no, this little phantom isn’t Jack Fenton’s grandchild. He’ll never really be Sam and Danny’s child, even if they both want…
The man swallows, grabbing his wife’s hand. “You should pick out the middle name.”
The couple’s eyes met and… the woman’s expression softens; Danny sees that she understands. “How about Aaron? That was my granddad’s name.”
“Jackson Aaron Fenton.” The man hums thoughtfully. “It’s great.” And just like that…
“Jackson?” Sam asks, addressing the small. “How do you like that name? Huh, Jackson?”
No response. After a pause, Danny experimentally calls. “Jackson?”
The phantom’s gaze turns instantly and his head might just nod. The ghost flies to Danny, landing on his shoulder and placing tiny hands on his cheek.
“I think he likes it.” Sam says with a smile.
“Do you, Jackson? Do you like that name?” Danny asks.
For just a moment, there’s a hum. A cacophony of emotions wafts off the phantom before returning to simple contentment.
“I think that answers it.” Danny smiles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jackson. Their little phantom has a name now. And the half ghost uses it with glee. The name is sweet as honey on his tongue. It rings like the sound of a bell. Danny’s eyes light up whenever the little ghost reacts to the name, even if it’s only half of the time.
The small ghost still goes from kingdom to kingdom with Danny. Jackson still causes trouble. Danny still tries to play, even if the simplest game of patty cake is beyond the ghost. Danny tries to teach his offspring to nod and shake his head for yes and no. But no lessons stick. Still….
The little ghost is affectionate, even more so than before. He loves cuddling with Danny, little body pressed up against his heart. Sometimes, a faint buzzing rings in time with the half ghost’s core. Jackson eats more often off of Danny’s plate. He sleeps more often too, not just when Danny himself is sleeping.
Danny watches, expression soft and loving as Jackson sleeps on the couch. His little chest moves up and down, in mock breathing. His arms wrap around the keychain stuffed penguin Sam had given him.
Sam and he had talked. They had made their decision. They were parents. Their little phantom, Jackson Aaron Fenton-Phantom, was their son. Even if he wasn’t like them, even if they only have him for a limited amount of time.
The half ghost kneels down, watching the sleeping figure closer. His ears twitch at… the soft sound of breathing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny flies Sam to his lair.
“He was asleep when I left.” The man says as he opens the door. “I figured he’d want to see you again.”
The couple cross the threshold and Jackson stirs at the sound, letting out a silent yawn. He darts up, glow flashing brighter in excitement.
“Hi there.” Sam smiles.
The little ghost flies up, nuzzling into her cheek before darting to Danny and doing the same.
The goth chuckles. “I brought you something.” She pulls out a tiny rubber ball and holds it out.
Jackson tilts his head, studying the object.
“It’s for you.” Danny encourages. “Go ahead and take it.”
Tentatively, the phantom flies forward. He lowers, landing on Sam’s hand, and tentatively takes the toy. He floats for a long moment, looking between the two adults.
“Do you want me to play with you?” Sam asks.
The little one’s head moves oh so subtly. Danny blinks. Was that… a nod?
The goth clearly notices as well, eyes widening. She kneels. “Just roll it to me, Jackson.”
The small ghost lands on the floor, sitting with his legs splayed in front of him. For a long moment, he stares at the ball before…. He pushes it away from himself, towards the woman.
“Good job!” Sam congratulates, clapping. She catches the ball and pushes it back to the little ghost. “Roll it back to mama.” After a hesitant pause, Jackson rolls the ball back.
Danny kneels as well. “You did it! You did it, little guy!”
Soon, there is no hesitation. Jackson passes the ball, chest shaking with soundless giggles. Danny and Sam couldn’t be more proud.
They keep playing for a while, before Jackson flies off. He explores, periodically bringing small objects back to the couple.
Sam tilts her head questioningly as the little phantom sits on the coffee table, nippling on an oversized cracker held in his small hands.
“What is it?” Danny asks.
“Is he bigger?”
The half ghost blinks. “What?”
“He was the length of your hand earlier, the last time I saw him. But…” She held up her hand to compare. “He’s bigger. Maybe… three or four inches taller?”
Danny furrows his brow. He holds up his own hand. And… “You’re right.”
Shock washes over him. Jackson is about one and a half times the length of his hand now. Definitely, measurably bigger. But…
The man leans forward, really looking at the smiling face. And his eyes just about pop out of his skull. Those features… Jackson’s face, it’s smoother, cheeks just a little bit rounder.
“He looks… he looks younger.” He wishes… he wishes he had a picture from before, from right after Jackson manifested. But… it’s burned into his mind. Danny’s likeness, a face identical to his own as a young teen but now…
“He does. He looks… eleven or twelve now. But before… he looked like you did at fourteen.”
The adults look at each other. And Danny’s mind whirls. Because…. Phantoms do not grow. They do not change and yet…. The changes are in front of him.
Something in Danny’s mind sparks, small pieces sliding into place. The increased affection, the subtle nods, the eating and sleeping, finally playing with Sam and him. The… the buzz of a tiny core under his finger. Phantoms are supposed to be coreless but…
There’s a suspicion. One he hadn’t allowed himself to think, yet alone dwell on… But, right in front of him, what he is seeing….
‘They say, that if fate is particularly generous, if parent and phantom offspring agree, then… there might be a transformation.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that night, once Sam has gone to bed, Danny stands in the doorway to Jackson’s room. It’s sparse, a room specially made for the little phantom. His offspring lies on a bed perfectly sized for him, with his stuffed penguin in his arms.
Danny kneels in front of the bed, again studying the sleeping face. The expression is serene, relaxed. Eye pinched closed, fringe ruffled by sleeping breath. The quiet sound of air moving in and out of the little one’s chest. He can almost, almost hear a quiet snore.
The man’s heart swells with hope.
“My little phantom.” Danny breaths. “You knew… I said before that I wasn’t like you. I’m a half ghost. And you’re a full ghost, a phantom. But…. I’m a Phantom too.” He chuckles lightly. “That’s what I named my ghost form anyway.”
There’s a pause as the man watches the chest rise and fall again. When he next speaks, his voice is quiet and sober. “We’re not that different. I know we’re not. Dora said… well, a lot of things but… phantoms aren’t supposed to be able to grow or change. They aren’t supposed to be able to make noise, definitely not talk. And they don’t stay. Not as long as you have.” Tentatively, slowly, Danny reaches. His thumb ruffles the sleeping head. “Oh, Jackson. The offspring of my ectoplasm. My child.” He pours all of his love, his hope, his belief in the words. “I think… I think you can be more. No, I know. I know you can be. If you want to.”
Danny’s hand shifts, gently rubbing his child’s back. “Sam and I… we love you no matter what you are or what you’re not. That’s what… what parents are supposed to do. Love you unconditionally. And us, your dad and mom, we love you so much, Jackson. Your daddy loves you so much.” He closes watery, emotion-filled eyes, his free hand clutched over his core. “But… if you want more than this. If you want a life with me and Sam. If you want to be not just my offspring but… our son, our baby, our child.” He emphasizes the last word, that distinction, the incredible difference between the two. “If you want things to be different. If you… If you agree… just tell me. Tell me and you can have it.”
The man finishes, his heart poured out. Emotions clash through him. Hope, fear, anxiety, desperation, sadness, love. But… something trickles into him, from the small body under his hand.
Danny’s eyes open and his gaze meets another’s, green eyes so like his own. Those eyes… the expression bores into him, the depth boundless. There is so much there, so many emotions, so many feelings. Danny’s hand shifts, moving to the bed in front of his son. A tiny hand grabs his pinky. And determination, certainty, assurance presses into his mind, from the child before.
A word is breathed into his very soul. Yes
In the morning, when Danny tickles Jackson, for the first time, his child laughs out loud.
TOGETHER AGAIN SPOILERS
A thread of lore, Easter eggs, episode connections, and background details from Adventure Time: Distant Lands: Together Again! Let me know if I missed anything! This is adapted from my original Twitter thread.
Tumblr media
Keep reading ⬇️⬇️⬇️
1. I was expecting them to perhaps do a classic style title sequence for this episode, but I wasn't expecting them to straight up use the original title sequence. The only difference is this final screen saying "Distant Lands".
Tumblr media
2. The background of the title cards is also the hill from the title sequence.
Tumblr media
3. The ice cream having "50 flavours" and having an image of an enlightened soul is an obvious reference to the 50th Dead World as we see it later in the episode.
Tumblr media
4. Continuing with the metaphor, the dirt in the ice cream could be a parallel to the fact that Jake's Nirvana actually wasn't perfect, because his inaction was allowing for injustice to perpetuate.
Tumblr media
5. This whole scene feels immediately slightly off. Finn has his Scarlet sword and is out on a classic Ice King adventure, but he speaks in his grown voice and all the slang feels much more forced than it did in the real season one. Turns out this was deliberate.
Tumblr media
6. The snow golem speaks with a baby voice like it did in the pilot episode, even though in canon it has a deeper voice. This further hints that something is not quite right.
Tumblr media
7. The first major break in continuity is these snow golems resembling Uncle Gumbald and Peace Master, who Finn didn't meet until later in his life.
Tumblr media
8. LSP sitting on Finn's head like this is reminiscent of Pen Ward's piece for the 2018 Ble crew zine.
Tumblr media
9. Finn being given the choice of helping somebody but ending up helping everybody reminds me of "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain". It's the kind of resolution that wouldn't happen so much in the late seasons of the show, which helps make this scene feel even further out of place.
Tumblr media
10. Jake is half frozen by Ice King in pretty much the exact same way as he was in "Prisoners of Love", and even has a very similar line.
Tumblr media
11. The Snail is seen here. The crew have said that the Snail has been deliberately left out of previous Distant Lands specials, so its placement here is another very deliberate hint that this whole sequence is "trying too hard" to be like the early seasons.
Tumblr media
12. The book "Mind Games" appears a couple of times, as seen in several previous episodes of Adventure Time. The first is as Finn is approaching the library in his dream. It also appears as one of the items in Finn's backpack later.
Tumblr media
13. Jake is hurt when Finn fist bumps him with his metal arm, revealing that this scene is not real. This is also a callback to the title sequences of "Islands" and "Elements".
Tumblr media
14. A whole bunch of familiar skeletons are seen in the bird's nest: Dirt Beer Guy, Abracadaniel, Me-Mow, Lemongrab, Mr. Pig, and the Snail again. This doesn't necessarily mean that all these characters are dead, since this scene is just a hallucination.
Tumblr media
15. Old Man Finn! He's still got the chest tattoo of Jake, and this time we know that Jake is dead, so the theory that Jake died before "Obsidian" seems pretty likely. He looks similar to his old man design from "Puhoy", with the same facial hair.
Tumblr media
16. There are several cameos of familiar characters who apparently died at the same time as Finn. The first is this duck, who previously appeared in "Ocarina".
Tumblr media
17. The second is Donny, from the episode... uh, "Donny".
Tumblr media
18. This goblin guy is an unnamed background character from “The Silent King”.
Tumblr media
19. This old lady first appeared in "The Enchiridion", way back in season one. Old ladies are a species in the Land of Ooo, so I guess she wasn't actually very old back then, given she just about outlived Finn.
Tumblr media
20. This is the cobbler who first appears in "His Hero". Amazing that he lived so long given all the trouble he got into in that episode.
Tumblr media
21. Land of the Dead! This place was first seen in season two's "Death in Bloom", and now we are finally learning its actual purpose. It's a sort of gateway and hub to all of the other dead worlds.
Tumblr media
22. There are some more minor cameos at the gates: a house person from "Donny", a soft person from "Gut Grinder", and a wood person from "When Wedding Bells Thaw". And, of course, the gate guardian himself from “Death in Bloom”.
Tumblr media
23. Finn completely ignores the gate guardian in the same way he did in Death in Bloom. This also has the convenient effect of not having to reveal how Finn died, leaving it up to the audience's imagination.
Tumblr media
24. Mr. Fox! We already knew he would die at some point because BMO had his skull in the finale.
Tumblr media
25. Finn has his design from the first Distant Lands poster in this scene. Turns out it's young Finn in old Finn's clothes. But they gave him a shirt in the poster so you wouldn't be able to see the tattoo.
Tumblr media
26. The clapping that Finn does while he's looking for Jake is a callback to "James Baxter the Horse", when Jake tells Finn to listen for that same rhythm if they are killed and need to find each other in the afterlife.
Tumblr media
27. Mr. Fox talks about a "past life quotient", suggesting that there might be some kind of limit to how many times somebody can reincarnate. Finn's reincarnations are also seen in this scene; a callback to "The Vault", and confirmation that reincarnations share the same soul.
Tumblr media
28. Boobafina, the goose who Mr. Fox was in love with in his debut episode “Storytelling”, apparently reincarnated into a tugboat. We've already seen that objects can have souls in the episode "Ghost Fly".
Tumblr media
29. Finn is initially assigned to the 37th Dead World, which is the same one that Jake went to when he died in "Sons of Mars". We can only guess at what the other numbers on the ticket mean ;)
Tumblr media
30. Tiffany! Despite several lucky escapes throughout his life, Tiffany has finally died. I like the use of this imagery to express Finn's conflicted feelings about him.
Tumblr media
31. The 50th Dead World has long been established as the "highest" dead world, and the one synonymous with Heaven within Adventure Time's universe. It was first mentioned in "Ghost Princess" back in season three.
Tumblr media
32. It's unclear what happens to souls which are destroyed within the dead worlds. It is a similar question to asking what happened to the ghosts that were killed in "Ghost Fly".
Tumblr media
33. Death doesn't speak at all in Together Again because his voice actor, Miguel Ferrer, passed away in 2017 long before production began.
Tumblr media
34. Finn phases through New Death when he tries to attack him, just like what happened way back in "Death in Bloom".
Tumblr media
35. The 30th Dead World contains Tree Trunks as well as many of her love interests; Mr. Pig, her alien husband from "High Strangeness", Danny and Randy who first appeared in "Apple Wedding", and several more who we don't recognise, including at least one who presents as a woman.
Tumblr media
36. Literally yelled when these two showed up. Joshua calls Finn a crybaby, which is a callback to "Dad's Dungeon".
Tumblr media
37. The wall of weapons in Joshua and Margaret's house includes the iconic Demon Blood Sword, which was broken in "Play Date", as well as Margaret's auto-loading crossbow from "Joshua & Margaret Investigations".
Tumblr media
38. Jermaine is sidelined a few times through the episode, in reference to his attitude in "Jermaine" where he feels that Finn and Jake were always their parents' favourites. I would have hoped things would be a bit better by now.
Tumblr media
39. Fern gets name dropped while Finn and Jake are reuniting. A shame he doesn't actually show up in the episode.
Tumblr media
40. In this scene, Finn says "What time is it?" This is a very subtle reference to the 2010 cartoon "Adventure Time".
Tumblr media
41. In a couple of shots during this fight scene it looks like Jake might have a tattoo. It seems like it only becomes visible when he stretches out his arm.
Tumblr media
42. New Death's amulet in this scene resembles parts of the Lich's cape, foreshadowing his influence on New Death.
Tumblr media
43. There are several more cameos in the 50th Dead World: Booshy from "High Strangeness", one of the Marshmallow Kids from "Scamps", and Ghost Princess and Clarence, who were seen ascending to the 50th Dead World in "Ghost Princess".
Tumblr media
44. Finn didn't interact with Booshy in "High Strangeness", but it seems they must have met at some point before they both died because Finn knows his name.
Tumblr media
45. It seems like people in the 1st Dead World are slowly melted away until they become part of the landscape. Nasty.
Tumblr media
46. Lots more cameos in this scene: a gnome from "Power Animal", a gnome from "The Enchiridion", a Bath Boy from "The Vault", Blagertha from "Love Games", Maja the Sky Witch, a troll from "Dungeon", Chocoberry, Choose Goose, Wyatt, a spiky person from "Gut Grinder", and possibly more.
Tumblr media
47. Tiffany's insults are consistently nonsensical and amazing, as they were in the original series.
Tumblr media
48. The Candy Kingdom looks extremely different. Peppermint Butler is wearing the crown so he might be in charge now, which is supported by the kingdom's very magical-looking augmentations. It’s not clear whether Finn and Jake were expecting to find Princess Bubblegum or Peppermint Butler, since both have the initials “PB” and both could be going by the title of “Princess”. Perhaps Peps and Bubblegum share the princess duties now that PB is living with Marceline more of the time.
Tumblr media
49. Peppermint Butler has a "Boss" mug, although it's not the same colour as the one from "Obsidian".
Tumblr media
50. Jake's ghost has the same design as he did when BMO killed him in "Ghost Fly". I also absolutely love Finn's ghost. This scene establishes that ghosts are just visitors to the mortal plane from the dead worlds.
Tumblr media
51. Life has only appeared in animated shorts before now. Namely, "The Gift That Reaps Giving" which establishes her relationship with Death, and "Frog Seasons: Winter". This episode gives her a concrete place within Adventure Time's pantheon: she is in charge of reincarnation.
Tumblr media
52. A translation of Life’s angry French dialogue by Shado: “After all I did for that boy. After all I did for him. No, it's not possible. It's not possible no, that... that makes me so mad but it's not possible.”
Tumblr media
53. We finally have in-universe confirmation that Shoko's tiger is a previous life of Jake. This was previously confirmed by one of the writers, but wasn't canon until now.
Tumblr media
54. I feel like Finn pulled off Shoko's look even better than Shoko did. I wonder whether Finn has gained the memories of his past lives now that he’s dead.
Tumblr media
55. No Easter egg here, just want to appreciate this image.
Tumblr media
56. There is an elemental symbol on the wall here, as seen in "Jelly Beans Have Power".
Tumblr media
57. Tiffany's dramatic internal monologue is a recurring gag, as is his habit of nearly dying from falling into holes.
Tumblr media
58. The Jake suit makes a cameo in the fight against New Death. It was last seen in the episode "Reboot”.
Tumblr media
59. Finn's backpack contains a few familiar items: the t-shirt with the pocket from "It Came from the Nightosphere", Finn's underwear from "Little Dude" and other episodes, and a copy of Mind Games as I've already mentioned.
Tumblr media
60. The Lich's Hand is present in the background of Death's... death scene. This is probably the unseen "friend" who New Death keeps talking about.
Tumblr media
61. The Lich's menacing monologues often begin with a single command. Previously they have included "Fall" and "Stop". This time, the command is "Burn".
Tumblr media
62. Jake uses the word "boingloings", which is a callback all the way to "Hitman" in the third season.
Tumblr media
63. Jake's blue shape-shifter form from "Abstract" appears very briefly during his fight with Finn.
Tumblr media
64. Finn's lumpy space person form also makes an appearance. This design was last seen all the way back in the second episode of the entire show, "Trouble in Lumpy Space".
Tumblr media
65. Jake steps on the Lich's hand in a very similar way to how he stepped on Ash in "Memory of a Memory", which is itself a Monty Python reference.
Tumblr media
66. The credits include a dedication to a few AT cast and crew who have passed away. Polly Lou Livingston was the voice of Tree Trunks. Miguel Ferrer was the voice of Death. Michel Lyman and Maureen Mlynarczyk were both sheet timers on the original series. Rest in peace.
Tumblr media
67. The message that Finn and Jake write out on the ouija board is "BUTT", which Peppermint Butler takes as a distress signal. This message is also used as a distress signal by the Hot Dog Knights in "The Limit".
Tumblr media
68. Peppermint Butler's reversed dialogue from the scene where he makes contact with Finn and Jake is "Kee-Oth Rama Pancake", the spell from “Dad's Dungeon” for banishing demons.
Tumblr media
69. That appears to be President Porpoise with all of Tree Trunks’ other lovers.
Tumblr media
70. In this scene, Life is humming part of "Lonely Bones", the song which Death tried to record for her in her debut short "The Gift That Reaps Giving". It's hard to notice because it's so brief.
Tumblr media
71. Finn and Jake's cover is blown while in the Land of the Dead because Jake loudly farts, which also happened in "Death in Bloom".
Tumblr media
72. The place where Mr. Fox explains the perception mechanics of the afterlife is the exact same location as the River of Forgetfulness from "Death in Bloom", which, as it turns out, was imaginary.
Tumblr media
These are sort of out of order at the end because I was adding stuff to the Twitter thread as it got discovered. That’s all for now!
The Five Freedoms
Dannymay Day 17: Freedom
In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. ~ Franklin D Roosevelt, State of the Union, 1941.
Freedom of Speech
"Very good, Danny, you really seem to understand the material,” Mr. Lancer said with a nod as they finished the oral test. He scribbled down a few things on a piece of paper before handing it to Danny, smiling. “Congrats, I’m awarding you an A on your very last test in my classroom.”
“Mr. Lancer, I don’t want you cutting corners for me,” Danny began to protest even if his heart clenched in joy seeing the big red A at the top of the page.
“I think you know by now I don’t hand out unearned grades,” Lancer said with an unamused eyebrow raised. “You’re very bright Danny, your past school difficulties were from a lack of sleep, study time, overwhelming stress and simply not being able to attend class for justifiable reasons. All I’ve done is given you the resources to prosper, giving make-ups, allowing you to do homework in and after class, oral tests. You’re the one who’s put in all the hard work. You wouldn’t have earned this without serious effort.”
“Thanks,” Danny blushed, leaning down to tuck away his grade into his bag. “Really, thank you for everything. I never, I never liked failing back in Freshman year but the things you’ve done. I’m actually going to graduate high school, there was a time when I really thought I wouldn’t.”
“Well, knowing the reason for your constant tardiness and excuses certainly helped,” Lancer frowned. “I’m afraid I can’t help you more with the ghost issue, the least I could do was see our town hero educated. When you walk across that stage this Friday, you will have earned it, perhaps more than anyone else there.”
“It helps that the ghost problem has lightened up somewhat,” Danny chuckled, moving to grab his bag. “Are you still coming next week? It’s Saturday so after graduation and I guess I won’t be your student anymore so you really don’t-”
“Danny,” Lancer asked quietly, leaning up against his desk with a contemplative look. “Are you sure you want to go through with this? I want you to be honest, son. This is a safe space, I want you to be free to speak your mind.”
“I mean, I kind of don’t have a choice,” Danny mumbled a little bit but cleared his throat when he saw Lancer’s deepening frown. “B-but I probably could refuse the Crown, if I wanted to or even delay taking it. I-” he paused, looking for the words. “I’m scared, that I won’t be a good king. I’m 18, I’ve seen and done a lot but that doesn’t mean I know how to lead and heal an entire dimension. I want this, my ghost half wants to protect and my human half wants to fix and this is something I think only I can do. But it doesn’t make it any less... daunting.”
“Daunting is an appropriate word,” Lancer hummed. “It’s also not a word Danny Fenton, age 14 would have used. Danny who used to snap at well-meaning teachers and occasionally used his powers for selfish purposes. But that boy grew up and grew up well. I have every faith that you will be an excellent ruler.”
“Thanks,” Danny blushed again, brushing back his hair. The bell rang, signaling the end of study hall which is when Danny caught up on missed tests or assignments. “I uh I gotta go.”
“Yes, the lunch hall awaits, enjoy the cafeteria slop,” Lancer stepped towards the door but didn’t open it. “I just want you to know you have a choice, Danny. If this is really what you want then I’ll respect it but, student or sovereign, my door is always open.” He opened the door and gave a comical little bow, “after you, your eminence.”
“Save it for Saturday, old man,” Danny laughed as he exited the classroom for what may be the last time. It stung in a bittersweet way but it was soothed by the notion that he would be welcomed back with open arms whenever he needed a listening ear and a friend.
Freedom of Worship
“I aced it,” Danny announced proudly as he sat down for lunch with Sam and Tucker.
“Way to go dude, that should push your final grade into the 90s and raise your overall GPA.” Tucker exclaimed, looking up from his laptop with a smile smile.
“Knew you could do it,” Sam grinned and elbowed him in the side. “I told you reciting poetry during patrol would be a good idea. Studying and making your future subjects think you’re super wise and powerful instead of some dweeb.”
“Excuse me, your boyfriend does happen to be super wise and powerful,” Danny flirted lightly, leaning closer to his girlfriend’s face. Her expression was flat but he could see the smile pulling at her lips.
“I’ll believe it when I see it,” she countered, pulling away to go back to her salad. “So is everything ready for the big day? Both of them?”
“Think so,” Danny said around his sandwich. “Graduation is Friday and you know all that prep work is done for that. As for Saturday, we just need to be at my uh castle by 9am to get things rolling. I do the final walkthrough tonight with Frostbite and Fright Knight so I should be good.”
“Another walkthrough?” Tuck asked, “haven’t you done like, two already?”
“I fumbled through the first one,” Danny mumbled, embarrassed. “I was super nervous and missed, like, all my cues and lines. The second went better but I was stressed with finals so I kind of raced through it. I need to get it right this time.”
“You will,” Sam said softly, setting her hand on top of his. “This is new for everyone, no one expects you to be perfect right away. Sometimes you take a little longer but you always get there in the end. They wouldn’t be taking the time to help, to ask you to be their king, if they didn’t think you could do it.” She raised his hand to her lips and kissed it gently. “And we all believe in you, so what if you stutter through some words? Doesn’t mean you won’t be a great king.”
“So uh,” Tucker interrupted with a knowing smile. “Are we going to have a wedding on Sunday after the graduation and coronation?” Sam and Danny jolted apart; Sam playing with her hair while Danny shoved more food in his mouth. They were both blushing heartily.
“Don’t joke around, Tucker,” Sam growled though the effect was dimmed by the bright blush on her face. “We’re not ready for that, we don’t even know if we’re even going to reach that point.”
“So Danny’s old enough to become king of an entire pocket dimension of dead people but not ready to marry his high school sweetheart?” Tuck teased, laughing as Sam threw an orange slice at him.
“Obviously, I mean look at him,” Sam said, gesturing at Danny who had a piece of lettuce sticking out of his mouth as he chewed. “This man is ready to lead a country but he still can’t put away his laundry.”
“Why would I put it away when I’m going to wear it?” Danny countered, “it seems a waste of time to put it away if I’m just going to pull it out again.”
“Clueless,” Tucker said, shaking his head but soon they all were laughing and Danny felt buoyed by the lightness of their belief in him.
Freedom From Want
“Val, you never got back to me about Saturday.” Danny said, cornering his friend outside of City Hall where she worked as an intern during afternoon classes.
“I said I would get back to you once I knew what was happening after graduation. My dad was hinting about a possible trip,” she said walking by Danny but slow enough for him to catch up. “Don’t you have that rehearsal today?”
“It’s not until tonight,” he shrugged, following her. “Surely he would understand if you needed a few hours to attend your friend’s coronation,” Danny joked to cover up some of the hurt. “Val, if you really don’t want to go just let me-”
“I do,” Val interrupted, “You’re my friend, Danny, one of the best friends I’ve ever had. I want to be there, I want to support you I just... you know I’m still angry you have to do this at all.”
“And I keep telling you, I don’t have to do anything, this is my decision. I want to take the crown and be king,” he explained for what felt like the millionth time.
“No, you wanted to be an astronaut,” Val frowned. “Before all this ghost crap, you were studying your ass off to get into the space program and now you’re going to do online community college when you have the grades to go to NASA.”
“If I recall during Freshman year you said you wanted to be a fashion vlogger and now you’re going to study law,” Danny said with an eyeroll. He looked up at the sky, the stars wouldn’t be out for a while but he could see the ghost of the moon hanging there. “Do I still wish I could be an astronaut? Sometimes, yeah but things have changed, Val and it’s not all bad.” He stepped in front of her so he could look at her properly, he let his eyes flare for effect. “I like my powers, I like helping people and while I’m stressed and nervous about everything, I want to do this.”
“Is that Danny or the ghost talking?” Valerie grumbled.
“Both, neither, ugh it’s just me,” Danny sighed. “I know I say I’m half ghost but it’s one whole just like your suit is just another part of you, not a separate person.”
“You know once you put that crown on, there’s no going back,” she said sternly. “No backing out, no changing your mind; you’ll be stuck as the king of a bunch of unruly, aggressive ghosts until the day you die and possibly even after.” Her hard expression softened and she looked away. “I don’t want to be a downer, rain on your parade, I’m just worried is all. It’s why, I don’t know if I can go on Saturday.”
Danny sighed but it was fond as he looked at his friend. Val didn’t operate on the near identical wavelength he did with Sam and Tuck. She always was a bit antagonistic, always pushing things but it always offered a fresh perspective. As much as her hesitancy pained him, he knew she did it because she cared.
“I know, believe me,” he chuckled, stepping closer. “I didn’t come to this decision overnight. You know how I agonized, it took me almost 2 months to make the call and you were there for me every step of the way. You’re gonna be a kickass lawyer, Valerie and I’m gonna rule the Ghost Zone. We’ll make it work, like we always have. There’s nothing the ghost hunting duo, Phantom Hunter can’t accomplish.”
“Stop trying to make that name a thing,” she said with a laugh. “Alright, okay I’ll go and watch them put a fancy crown on your stupid head.” Her lids lowered in conspiracy, “and if you get bored with the whole king thing, I’ll be there to break your shackles.”
“I’ll have you on speed dial,” he grinned, taking a quick look around before transforming. “Come on, race you to the ice cream parlor.” He said before speeding off. He grinned when he heard the sound of a hoverboard closing in on him moments later.
Freedom from Fear
“I’m home! Sorry I’m late, Val and I got ice cream and then Boxy showed up for a bit of chase,” he said, shrugging off his bag. “I swear, I’ve had more ghosts show up to fight the last two weeks than I have the last six months. If I didn’t know better, I’d say they were feeling nostalgic before I’m like, their boss or whatever.”
“It could be,” Jazz said from the kitchen, lightly looking through her book. Her second year of college had ended so she was back home for a few weeks before heading to an internship. He’d missed having her around. “Ghosts are basically a collection of emotion and memory, they don’t process things like humans do. They know things will change Saturday so they’re indulging in one last tussle.” She looked at him critically over her book. “They haven’t been hurting you, have they?”
“Nah,” Danny laughed, reaching into the fridge for a soda. “They haven’t been able to do that for a while, it’s just kind of annoying.”
“There isn’t a ghost alive that can take down a ghost hunting Fenton!” Dad said, swooping into the kitchen and slapping Danny’s back so hard, he choked on his soda. “Well I guess they’re not really alive but you know what I mean. How was school, Danno? Trudging through that last week alright?”
“Yeah,” Danny wheezed as he struggled to get soda out of his lungs. “Aced Lancer’s poetry final so that’s it for school work. Really all I have to do now is walk.” Dad beamed and pulled him close and Danny leaned into the warm, comforting weight.
“That’s great, my boy! I always liked that Lancer fellow, from the moment I met him. I told your mother, ‘now that man is a good teacher who’s going to do wonders for our brilliant boy.’”
“Actually,” Danny laughed, making no move to leave his dad’s embrace. “The first time you met him technically I was overshadowing you. After that it was at  Fall Formal when you demanded to know why he was talking to Mom.”
“Hmm, I don’t remember that,” Dad said thoughtfully.
“That’s probably because I overshadowed you again immediately after,” Danny grinned, laughing as his Dad began playfully ruffling his hair.
“Oh so my boy thinks he’s big enough to take on his old man? Got his cool ghost powers, gonna be ghost king? Well Jack Fenton can take care of any ghost, I’ll show you who’s boss, Ghost Kid!” Back when Danny was scared and alone, the idea of his Dad grabbing him like this would have terrified him. Now Danny can only laugh as his father hoisted him from the ground and spun him around like he did when Danny was little.
If there was anything Danny wished he could convey to his younger self it was that there was never anything to fear. Yes, the road getting here was bumpy and everything did change with his reveal. But his parents love for him never stopped, only got stronger without secrets and fear between them. He heard his Dad grunt in pain and Danny automatically lightened his weight.
“Going easy on the geezer, huh?” Dad said breathlessly as he dropped his arms to grab at his back. Danny stayed floating in the air for a moment before settling back down on the ground. “Ooof probably a good idea, my back isn’t what it used to be. A little of that ghost ice please, son?”
Danny set his hand on his Dad’s lower back, cooling it and smiling at his sigh of relief. He made eye contact with Jazz who rolled her eyes fondly.
“Dad, if you just acted your age for once, your back wouldn’t be hurting. Danny’s almost as tall as you are, you shouldn’t be tossing him around,” Jazz lectured but she was smiling too.
“Well,” Dad groaned as he set himself slowly into one of the chairs. “You’re not too big to toss around, young lady.” He grinned, reaching over with one hand to tickle under her chin. She squealed and drew back, propping up her books between them which Dad playfully knocked over.
“Danny,” he looked up from his sister and Dad’s escalating war with her textbooks to see his mom frowning at the clock on the wall. “You should probably get going if you’re going to make that meeting. It’s over a half hour to fly there,” Danny hissed when he saw the time and chugged the rest of his soda before speeding for the basement steps.
“Sorry lost track of time, I should be back before midnight. I’ll knock on your door like I usually do when I’m home.”
“Do you want us to come with, baby?” She asked quietly. Like Val, she had doubts on him becoming king but was doing her best to be supportive of his decisions. Her fussing though just made him feel more loved. “We can take the speeder and get the lay of the land before-”
“Mom, it’s fine,” he walked past her, kissing her cheek before opening the door. “It’s pretty dull and I don’t want to spoil what surprises there are before Saturday. Besides, I’ve got nothing to fear. I’ll see you guys later.”
“Alright sweetie, I love you.”
plus Freedom of Choice
“Very good, very good!” Frostbite praised when Danny finished reading through his lines. “Most excellent, Great One, your subjects will be most pleased by your performance and feel honored to call you their sovereign.”
“Oh uh, thanks,” Danny said, adjusting the weight of the fake ice crown on his head. He wouldn’t actually get the real Crown until his coronation where he’s told the Crown of Fire will convert to the Crown of Ice based on his core. The fake was just a placeholder but it already felt heavy, he wondered how the real Crown will feel.
“It will do, I suppose,” Fright Knight said, ever the downer. “I still say you need to add more of a menace to your tone, you need to command their attention and loyalty. They should be on their knees from the sheer force of your presence.”
“Dude, we talked about this,” Danny sighed, still playing with the crown. “I’m not going to be a king like Pariah. I want them to trust me, not out of fear but because, I don’t know, they like me.”
“Most unusual,” Fright Knight scoffed before stalking off into the depths of the castle he would soon haunt. Danny thought it was excessive to build a whole castle just for him but some traditions even he couldn’t break.
“Don’t listen to him,” Frostbite reassured him, patting the long snow stitched cape that covered Danny’s shoulder. “He doesn’t yet know the kindness of a benevolent ruler, he’ll come around. Now, I believe it is late in your world. You should head back and get some rest.”
“I will,” Danny mumbled, suddenly feeling very small in the cavernous throne room. “Can I uh, can I have a minute alone. You know, to process?”
“Of course,” Frostbite said genially. Danny couldn’t help the little wince when his friend bowed before leaving. Would all of his ghost friends bow to him now? He knew things would be different, being king but now with the date fast approaching and a fake crown on his head, it all felt too much.
He wandered over to a small window, looking over his soon to be kingdom with nerves bubbling up in him. The weight of a medallion around his neck only came as a little bit of surprise as time slowed to a stop.
“Hey there, just stopping by?” He teased, not looking away from the window.
“Your puns get worse as you age,” Clockwork said softly, floating next to Danny. “You look very regal, very different from the first time. I’m glad this is the timeline that came to pass.”
“Because you made it that way?” Danny couldn’t help but say with a touch of bitterness.
“Because you chose it,” Clockwork responded evenly. “Tell me, Danny, do you wish to forsake your claim? You still have time to back out.” Danny sat there quietly, twisting the question over in his mind.
“No,” he said finally after a minute or two. “No, this is where I’m meant to be, it’s what both halves of me want. If I tried to leave, if I did something else, I’d just feel like I messed up. Like I missed the opportunity to do the most good for me and the world.”
“Then what concerns you?” Clockwork asked.
“I mean just because this feels right doesn’t mean I know what I’m doing. The Ancients have been giving me a crash course in Ghost Politics and I’ve talked to all the major areas of the Zone for culture and Lancer really helped me understand morality and the human condition and what not... but will any of that help me rule?”
“Hmm, it’s a good question,” Clock work said in that infuriatingly calm voice as he moved to Danny’s other side and gestured out the window. “Do you want to know what I see in your future?”
“Yes,” Danny gasped, turning wide eyed to the Master of Time.
“I see successes and failures,” Clockwork intoned. “I see joy and grief, mistakes made, lessons learned and victories won. I see a young man who I’ve had the pleasure of watching grow up, be a kind and generous king to human and ghost alike. Who uses his knowledge of both worlds to seek peace and harmony. Not everything will be perfect and he will have regret and sorrow weighing on his heart at times, but overall he will leave the throne better than when he claimed it.”
“That’s awfully vague,” Danny said, wrinkling his nose. Clockwork chuckled beside him.
“Of course, I can’t see your future Danny because you’re actively creating it right now with every breath. But I know you as I have known many kings and queens in the past. And I know that you have the strength of heart, mind and will to be a most magnificent ruler.”
“Hmph,” Danny snorted, leaning out the window a bit to look at the beautiful swirls of his kingdom. It wasn’t the stars but there was a certain freedom in this too, the chance to reach his highest potential on his own terms. The chance to fully be himself, both human and ghost. “So I guess you weren’t really trying to off me back when my jerky older self was causing problems.”
“I would have if that future had any chance of coming to fruition,” Clockwork said honestly. “But this future burned so much brighter not because of anything as fanciful as fate but because you’re a good person Danny. No matter how it happened, you were always going to end up here.” He patted Danny’s head and readjusted the fake crown until it sat perfectly balanced.
“Now then, the hour is late and you have loved ones waiting for your return. Your kingdom can wait a while longer, enjoy your last few days of freedom.” The Master of Time stepped back and Danny followed.
“Who’s to say this isn’t my freedom?” Danny asked with a wry smile, winking a little at his guardian and friend. “I’m going to live a long life fixing up the Zone and repairing relations with the living. I can only do that with the support of my family and friends, human and ghost. With them at my side, not even the stars matter. The Crown of Ice and the Ring of Peace aren’t my prison, they’re my salvation.”
“Then you have nothing to worry about, My Lord.” Clockwork smiled, taking the medallion back and fading back out of the time stream. “I look forward to your long and prosperous reign.” Time restarted again and Danny let out a long breath, his shoulders relaxing for the first time since he got here.
He wandered back over to the window, his pretend crown still a noticeable weight on his head. In a few days, it would be real as would all the pressure and responsibility that came with it. But it also came the freedom to help make the world a better place.
Danny looked over at his future kingdom and felt nothing but peace and excitement for the future. He was exactly where he was supposed to be.
Homemade
Day 2 Dannymay: Home
Clockwork made cookies, they were a special blend he’d invented through countless trial and error to get just right. For a ghost, they'd have enough concentrated ectoplasm to provide energy and enough positive emotion to make them enjoyable, and for a human child, he focused on getting the right flavors and physical ingredients to make them actually edible.
 He set the plate down in front of Danny. The young half-ghost had been working really hard at his homework lately and Clockwork wanted to do something small to reward him for it.
 “Are- did you make cookies?” Danny asked, looking up at him in confusion.
 Clockwork smiled and gently ruffled his hair. “Will you tell me how they taste?”
 Most ghosts lost the ability to taste early on, along with their sense of smell. Clockwork never had either though, only had glimpses into different futures with different recipes and Danny’s own reactions to them.
 “Please tell me this isn’t the first time you’ve made cookies…” Danny made a face, uncertain.
 Clockwork rolled his eyes and grabbed the plate again, “you don’t have to eat them-“
 “I’ll eat them!” Danny grabbed the plate from Clockwork’s hands, a splash of green decorating his cheeks and forming a stark contrast against his starlit freckles.
 Braced as if for impact, Danny quickly shoved one of the still warm cookies into his mouth and began to chew. Slowly his features softened into enjoyment and Clockwork got to watch as he grabbed another and then another until the entire plate was clean.
 He was glowing slightly, the oven-baked ectoplasm doing wonders for his energy levels. Existing so long on ambient ectoplasm alone wouldn’t have been nearly enough for a young ghost like Danny, so it was nice to see him properly fed for once.
 “Clockwork, these are amazing! How did you make them?” Danny asked, his eyes shining slightly.
 “That’s a secret,” Clockwork lied. He didn’t want to admit it took him over a thousand tries to actually make something edible to a human pallet, and he had enough of a mysterious air about him that he’d get away with it.
 Danny didn’t seem to mind though, he just grabbed the plate and flew over to the kitchen so he could wash it. “Okay, what do I have to bribe you with to get those again?”
 Clockwork’s core hummed in satisfaction, it was almost a primal instinct to care for one’s child and it was always nice to be appreciated. “Finished homework would be a nice start.”
 Danny scoffed, a small smile on his face. “I think you need to lower your standards. I mean, I’m passing history now right?” The single dish was cleaned, dried, and put away in less than a moment.
 “Thank you Daniel,” Clockwork said. Danny didn’t get nearly enough appreciation from those around him, it never hurt to give him a little when he could.
 A light green blush built on Danny’s cheeks and he looked away in an attempt to hide his reaction. “Yeah well, you make cookies like that again and I’ll clean your whole clock tower.”
 Clockwork smirked, lifting an eyebrow. “The infinite spirals of my clock tower and the unending trails of time that exist ever moving inside of it would certainly appreciate a touch up.”
 Danny balked, “uh… maybe I can do a room at a time?”
 “You don’t have to clean anything for cookies Daniel. I’d rather you eat than not.”
 Relieved, Danny rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled. “Thanks Clockwork.” He sighed and dropped his hand, looking over at the window to the realms outside. “Ugh, I don’t wanna go to school tomorrow.”
 There wasn’t much to say, so Clockwork didn’t. He didn’t particularly care about Danny’s academics or whether or not he succeeded in school, but he knew intimately how much it mattered to Danny. It was tied to his two obsessions after all.
   He had to go to school so he could both make his family happy and be there to protect the other students, he had to succeed if he ever wanted to fulfill his dreams of working at NASA, the human space program. At the thought of absolute failure he would stress, shut down, and grow apart from those close to him. It would put strain on his obsessions and could lead to internal core damage. It was better for now, that Clockwork simply gave him time and the chance to try and keep up.
 “You’re always welcome to visit if you need more time,” he offered.
 “I know. I’ve uh, still got homework to finish…”
 “By all means.” Clockwork followed Danny out of the kitchen and watched as he sat back down to finish his homework, content with the healthy glow the cookies gave Danny.
 He turned back to his own work and watched for anything that didn’t fit or was causing trouble, but his mind was on the next recipe he wanted to try.
       The next recipe ended up being a casserole.
@omnicrex  Ask And Ye Shall Recieve
Okay so, The only one who tells Danny what‘s up with Dan (Dark!Danny) is Vlad. Everyone else just says: “hey this is what you become in the future”
A little sus right? Considering no ones going after Vlad for his role in everything?
Maybe... that‘s because what Vlad told Danny was all a carefully fabricated lie
Why lie? I hear you ask.
:3c
Because it was a trick to get Danny to do something for him while also attempting to endear himself/emotionally manipulate Danny
My theory:
Vlad Lied about “you had no where to go but to me -a guy you hate- after your family died”
This is Unequivocally false!!
Maddie had a sister who owns a farm in the country side!! Wouldn’t Danny go there to be with his last living family member? Unless Vlad Did something to stop that from happening and forced Danny to stay with him instead...
Which sounds VERY Vlad.
He then lied about Danny asking him to “rip the humanity out” so he wouldn’t feel hurt anymore. This next part I’m not sure about but I think Vlad did/said something along the lines of threatening to do that and Danny, emotionally unstable, reacted by Being the one to rip out Vlad’s humanity instead.
Also the reason Vlad survived more or less intact is because he’s less ghost than human unlike Danny who is a perfect split but that’s just more head-canon and not necessarily evidence
Obv they would have fought, but Vlad would have been severely weakened, and Danny would have been able to absorb Vlad’s ghost side, leading to the creation of Dan (the ghostly combination of Danny and Vlad)
My next point!! The EVIDENCE
See, when Dan transforms into Danny there are a number of things that Don’t match up with Vlad’s story
For one (1): why does his transformation look exactly the same as it always does when phantom turns back into his human form? white rings and all? We’ve seen other characters shapeshift and disguise themselves as human and it NEVER looks like that!!
For two! (2): How are his eyes BLUE!!! Every shapeshifting ghost that has pretended to be human in this show had their eyes stay the same color from their ghost form!! Even when possessing people!!
For three!! (3): This one isn’t as strong because the fenton’s tend to be kinda useless in canon in general but  How would none of the Fenton’s tech or what not, failed to pick up a full ghost masquerading as their son? Unless it was the usual amount of half-ghost human form bs
Also! It makes sense, that Dan’s form is different if he absorbed a ghost as powerful as Plasmius. It also makes sense, that his human half wouldn’t change at all since it’s a physical body and that’s not how humans work. This is why he’s Dark!Danny and why the focus seems to be on Danny and his possible future mistakes.
This also ties into (and is strong evidence for)  my theory that Danny wouldn’t age after he died/became half ghost which is why his human form is still the exact same!!!!!!
Why did Vlad lie about it?
Simple! He wanted Danny to change the past, without his ghost powers his life fell to ruins. He was unable to manipulate the world to his whims and he was left to rot. -This young, naive Danny that has a soured opinion of Vlad but not a pure genuine hatred, not yet, is his ticket to getting back the life he had
So he emotionally manipulates him, plays up the “I was only trying to help I care So much about you oh woe is me” angle
And then demonizes/guilts Danny: “you murdered your own human half!” So that when Danny went back to his own timeline and fixed everything, the Vlad of the past would get a bit more lenience and be able to further worm his way into Danny’s life.
After all, what better way to convince someone to keep giving you a chance if you’ve already “redeemed yourself” once?
That’s my Ted talk for the day.
Everyone talks about TUE Vlad being redeemed but I call BS
That fucker watched the world burn around him and then decided to try again
My first Phic Phight fic!
For @ecto-american’s prompt
His name was Danny.
That was the first thing he knew for sure was true, when he had first woken up it was what everyone called him, and it fit just fine, wasn’t something off or uncomfortable so he let it settle over him before he tried to speak.
His voice didn’t come at first, and it hurt to try so the nurses made him promise to take it easy for now, to sit back and listen. So he did.
He listened as the people around him spoke at length about how much they missed him, about how they couldn’t wait to get him home again, about how glad they were he’d survived.
The loudest and most talkative of the people that visited him and called him Danny, was a large man in an orange jumpsuit that went on long enthusiastic tangents that Danny had long stopped paying attention to. He was almost always with a smaller, authoritative woman named Maddie, who insisted He call her Mom. They told him they were his parents.
They told him they loved him.
And then they told him everything else.
The first time Danny remembered something it was with excitement, he was still in the hospital room and between the visits from the men in the starched white suits, his parents, and the doctor, he had been wrestling with the feeling that something was missing.
It had only been when Maddie had finally taken off the hood and goggles of her jumpsuit had Danny gotten a flash of familiar red hair and asked, “where’s Jazz?”
His heart buzzed at the question, sure, so sure that it would get answered, that he had remembered something.
But both Jack and Maddie had just looked at him, disappointed, and he couldn’t bring himself to ask again.
Eventually, once the doctor declared him competent and unlikely to slip back into his coma, his parents had taken him home.
There were streamers all over the house and a giant party banner that read “Welcome Back” in thick black lettering and Danny forced out a small smile as he looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings. Maddie walked up behind him and he flinched, his body acting before his brain could catch up.
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line.
Tagged by @amynchan - thanks!
I went through this and then went through it again because I realized I should probably take out the fics that were originally three sentence fics in case I write those differently, so in no particular order....
1) Protocol: "Just take the shot."
2) Invisible Stitches: “You all packed for our trip, Danny-boy?”
3) Down the Rabbit Hole: Wirt stared.
4) Interwoven: “What’s with the newspaper?” Jake asked as Fu tossed it on top of the homework he’d spread out over the counter at the shop.
5) Implications: “Leave my son alone,” growled Jack.
6) Unbound: Jake hates what he is.
7) Passageway: Danny sat very still at his desk, not listening to a word Mr. Lancer was saying.
8) Whirlwind: Jake picked up what looked like a jar of inky sludge and muttered to Fu, “Are you sure this is what we need?”
9) The Curious Case of Danny Fenton: On the surface, the dark-haired kid Wes spotted farther down the hallway in Casper High wasn’t anything special.
10) Atonement: “We’re not alone,” Toph said, stopping in her tracks and nearly causing Zuko to bowl into her.
11) The Trouble with Ghosts: Mr. Lancer stared in shock at the boy in front of him.
12) Revision: Maddie stood frozen as her son deactivated the bonds on the examination table, releasing the ghost she’d been examining.
13) Forewarning: “The book mentioned there might be something stuck in some special thermos that’s buried just behind the shack,” Dipper explained as he sank the spade into the ground again.
14) Perception: Valerie couldn’t remember a world without colour.
15) Finality: They weren’t saying anything about it.
16) Discovered: Midoriya wasn’t sure when it began or, even in hindsight, how it began.
17) Bewitched: The signs had been more along the lines of impossible robberies than bloody murders, but Sam and Dean had been fairly sure they were on the trail of some centuries-old he-witch.
18) Helpless: Star didn’t deserve the detention she’d gotten.
19) Explorations: “Dude, what’s that supposed to be?"
20) Captive: Randy’s first thought was to run, but there was a problem with that.
Patterns. Patterns. Patterns. Um. Almost half are dialogue. Most name a character. A few chime in with an ominous note immediately. I am very bad at identifying patterns in my own writing like this. I know it more by broader strokes than...this. Um. There are very few times I switch it up and don't name a character till later, really, unless it is starting with some form of dialogue.
Favourite line? I dunno, maybe the last one? Randy's first thought was to run, but there was a problem with that. It immediately tells you how I picked the title--there is much more of a pattern of titles than opening lines, it seems--and does a decent job of setting the tone for the fic.
The takeaway here is that I'm awful at attempting to analyze my own writing and therefore typically rely on other people to do it for me.
So this is my entry for CartoonFreakshow's Wes Weston NG contest held some time ago, they're the kids of Wes and one of my OCs, hope you guys like em! ^U^ I hope you find find the info decent ;;w;; Name: Dorothea Arany-Weston
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Species: Halfa
Orientation: Bisexual, Demiromantic
Parents: Wesley Weston and Matild Arany-Weston
Powers: Standard ghost powers, telekinesis, mild mind control, still discovering the rest
Likes: Fashion, figure skating, modelling, calligraphy, sand sculpting, experimental films, mural painting, spicy food, teamwork
Dislikes: Overly sweet food, getting dirty, lattes, unnecessary fights, lizards, history, heat, ghosts, sunburns, irresponsible people
Personality: She's more often than not the calming energy of the three sisters, she likes helping her sisters best she could. She's pretty proud of her appearance and would not be one to be humble when compliments are given, she's encouraging towards others and would gladly accept any rival she meets as a sort of friendly competition. She likes doing backhanded insults when she's insulted by someone she holds no liking to, but otherwise, she still attempts to keep an open mind to prevent herself from holding prejudices. (She sometimes fails at it.)
Backstory: She was born a human, her mother being something close to a shaman didn't really pass any of the psychic/medium powers to her, so she was pretty much just a normal kid. She was contented to just be a normal kid since she saw the famed half ghost fighting ghosts every now and again and she figured she didn't want that or anything involving the supernatural since she saw how dangerous it was.
When her sisters were born, she was three. As she grew older she took her role as the eldest seriously and she would be caught watching after her younger sisters. When her sisters showed signs of psychic/medium powers, she began looking for ways to help them control it instead of going into constant trances. As an elder sister she pretty much saw to it that whenever their parents were out either on vacation or business related trips, she would take charge easily and be able to follow their parents orders.
She studied in Amity Park's Casper High and had been able to show her prowess at arts and that was where she got to meet one of Danny's children. Mercutio Fenton. As a child of twelve, her first instinct was to go with her father's dislike for the Fentons, so she just scrawled a note to him saying "you suck" and stuck it in his textbook. She didn't expect him to wait for her after school to try and learn why she wrote him that note. It was because of that fact that they grew closer to each other and became best friends.
As she grew older, her love for art grew and she went further with even learning calligraphy. Soon enough she began joining mural contests and sand sculpting contests. At the age of fifteen, she grew interested in figure skating and began taking lessons. This she used for inspiration for new pieces, turning it into stories for every piece she did.
By the time she was sixteen, she began dating Mercutio and was scouted as a model, a job she gladly took up with great enthusiasm. It was the best thing she had done, but one thing just might change everything for her.
It was when Mercutio was visiting his grandparents that she was invited by him so they could look at the lab where Jack had some old ghost hunting weapons. She was there with Mercutio, they were both trying to figure out what each item was for and inspecting it when Mercutio found an ectoplasmic ray cannon. He grew curious and began fiddling with the machinery, trying to figure out if it was still functioning. It unfortunately was and he accidentally pulled the trigger, the ectoplasm going straight for Dorothea who was inspecting the ghost portal. She became unconscious and the next thing she knew, she woke at the hospital. Her father was upset with her but even more so at Mercutio - and his family...again - her mother in turn was worried and had spent the whole time trying to figure out if anything wrong happened. She spent a few days at the hospital before she went back to school. It didn't hit her immediately but when she began noticing that people sometimes panicked whenever they were talking and was calling for her name repeatedly or when her sisters would go into far more frequent trances, she began getting worried. She told her mother about what had been happening and this led to her being brought to Danny Fenton who explained to her what might be happening to her. As her powers made itself known, she began getting some lessons from Mercutio and his father on how to control them.
She had done her best to act like nothing was wrong but she found it difficult to keep up with her modelling and figure skating so she dropped out of both. Letting out her emotions through painting and writing, she broke up with Mercutio and had shut herself in her room where she would try to control her powers in her room. Her father was reluctant to let in the Fentons but had contacted them in hopes that they could help.
At age seventeen, she began getting a hold of her powers and she was starting to be able to adjust her time management to be able to do what she'd done before. At the same time she began helping out Mercutio and his family in fighting ghosts.
Name: Hajnalka Arany-Weston
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Orientation: Undecided, Demiromantic
Parents: Wesley Weston and Matild Arany-Weston
Powers: Psychic/Medium powers
Likes: Online and Tabletop roleplaying, sports, swimming, historical and fantasy films, renaissance art, renfairs, fantasy and historical fiction books, classical theatre, dancing, triathlons, sweet and sour foods, bragging
Dislikes: Spicy food, small spaces, insects, cats, science, being stuck inside, romcoms, high pitched voices, dolls, being late, staying indoors for too long
Personality: She appears to be a tough girl with her constant sports participation and aggressively competitive behaviour on the field but outside of that part of her life, she'd be found to be as sedate as her sisters. Of course that was not always the case since when she was younger she had a very short temper, she's fast to hold grudges and likes to get even with people that hurt her or her family. She's got some insecurities about when she goes into trances when she still couldn't control her psychic powers but as time went on she began accepting what she could about it. She's prideful of her achievements and of her family's achievements so she isn't really one to back down from a pissing contest when someone brags about what they could do. This often leads her to butting heads with different people.
Backstory: Being the elder by fifteen minutes to her twin sister, she was the first to begin exhibiting psychic powers at a young age and she grew frightened of it, trying to hide her abilities but being unable to stop the trances or from her becoming a sort of vessel for ghosts to use. Her parents found out and her mother began helping her control those abilities while her elder sister did her best to help her out with stemming the effects of her abilities.
She always bonded with her father in sports and he encouraged her when she said she wanted to become a basketball player one day. So they'd always play with each other, and if she ends up in a trance in the middle of their game, Wes would just reassure her that it was nothing to be worried about.
It wasn't til she was seven that her twin sister began showing signs of her abilities as well, this led to Hajnalka immediately sitting her twin down to explain to her what she needs to learn so that her abilities won't get in the way of her life.
As a child she had an interest in history and fantasy and had often had some books about either genre stuffed in her locker or backpack. As she grew older she began going to Ren fairs and to conventions as well as joining some LARPing for kids her age. She gets a bit intense though.
She joined the basketball team when she was thirteen and had kept improving  all the while trying to live a normal life even with her occasional trances.
Name: Hayley Arany-Weston
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Orientation: Asexual, Biromantic
Parents: Wesley Weston and Matild Arany-Weston
Powers: Psychic/Medium powers
Likes: Puzzle and mind games, investigative journalism, the Twilight Zone series, photography, short films, crime investigation TV shows, martial arts, sweets and pastries
Dislikes: Math, sour food, pranks, horror stories, high places, Puns, vague people, gum, getting their pictures taken
Personality: She tends to be too probing whenever she wants to get to know someone she talks to and she sometimes forgets to give people their privacy but she sometimes finds it hard cause of her curiosity. She's an ambivert though most of the times she prefers to being in the company of her family since she found that they could at least understand her when she starts rambling about various subjects. Though when someone needs help she willingly gives them her aid and would do her best to give them what they want or need. She's the more forgiving between her and her sisters. She likes to be a know it all and would often gloat whenever she was right in her assumptions, this sometimes leads to people not exactly liking her.
Backstory: She was the younger between her and Hajnalka, though this didn't really change much of their dynamic or attitude. She was a late bloomer with the psychic abilities that her twin and her mother possessed, but it didn't completely bother her since she would oftentimes spend the day reading or looking up various information that she finds helpful. And when she did develop her abilities, she gladly accepted every advice and training her family gave her, as well as the self defence training her dad taught her. She really wasn't against that.
Unlike her twin though who tried to hide her abilities, she would often use hers to help people when they want to talk to someone that had died, this though would often get her warnings from her mother who would remind her to choose who she'll help carefully. Those warnings were sometimes taken to heart, sometimes she would ignore them. Sometimes when she helps people it turns out good, sometimes, it ends up bad. Very bad. Fun Facts: -Hayley accepts payment for her psychic services through favours. -Hajnalka is a big fan of various fantasy and historical fiction books. -Mercutio and Dorothea has an on and off relationship until college where they finally go steady. -Hayley is deathly allergic to bees. -Hajnalka is allergic to shrimp. She doesn't really care though, not as if she eats the stuff. -Dorothea has a pug she named Cookiedough -Hayley likes to sneak some butter cookies to Cookiedough. -Hajnalka just wants a dog that doesn't sound like it's gonna fall over dead due to wheezing. -Wes and Matild take the three girls out once a week to spend time together as a family. -Wes is closest to Dorothea and Hajnalka, Hayley and he are close but he finds that Matild and Hayley are closer together. But he still loves all his kiddos a lot. -Hajnalka actually likes wearing old timey dresses, Hayley likes to experiment with her fashion sense and Dorothea secretly got herself a tattoo on her wrist. -Matild took Dorothea out for play dates when Dorothea was small to the Fentons. Wes would just come to make sure they're safe. -The last time the Weston family played a tabletop game, it ended with Wes being King, Matild getting murdered, Hayley fighting Orcs, Dorothea assassinating an NPC and Hajnalka laughing at her family. -Dorothea tends to stress bake. So every time there's pastries and biscuits and bread on any flat surfaces, everyone figures out her mood immediately. Dorothea, Hajnalka and Hayley Arany-Weston © Me, C-RIE-ativity
The Top Twenty Books I Read in 2018
My main takeaways from the past year’s reading:
Growing up is hard, whether you’re a working-class college sophomore trying to adjust to an Ivy League college, a chronically ill medieval kid trying to beat witchcraft charges, or A GHOST THE WHOLE TIME.
You can go to Kansas City or the Congo or SPACE, but you can never escape the past.
Maybe I should be more worried about getting murdered?
Anyway:
20. East by Edith Pattou (2003)
Rose, a sixteenth-century Norwegian farm girl, loves her large family, but sometimes feels at odds with their rather staid personalities. So, when a talking polar bear offers to end her family’s poverty and her sister’s illness if she’ll stay with him for a year, she accepts not only out of desperation, but also wanderlust. This expansive retelling of “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” (already a winner because of its determined, flawed heroine) shines because of its vivid use of multiple settings and its well-developed minor characters. I initially thought it was a little slow, but I really came to appreciate Pattou’s skill over time.
19. Joe College by Tom Perrotta (2000)
Danny, a working-class Yale sophomore in 1982, thinks he has a lot to worry about. His rich friends are clueless, his townie coworkers at the dining hall resent him, and his crush is dating a professor. Then he goes home for spring break, where he’s confronted with a pregnant ex and a bunch of mobsters who try to interfere with his father’s lunch-truck business. I mostly read this book for completism--I love Perrotta, but The Wishbones made me wary of his earlier work--yet this seemingly lighthearted story contains some fascinating moral and ethical dilemmas, plus a hero who is sympathetic despite his callowness.
18. Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness (2010)
In the explosive conclusion of Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy, the protagonists find themselves in the middle of a war with an enemy they don’t understand, forcing them to wrestle with questions of right versus wrong, forgiveness versus revenge, and the possibility of redemption. This was an intense read, but there was a lot of genuine joy and love mixed in with the death and war.
17. Ashes to Ashes by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian (2014)
In the less literally but just as emotionally explosive conclusion of Han and Vivian’s Burn for Burn trilogy, former revenge-partners Lillia and Kat try to move on in the wake of a tragedy, as well as the abrupt departure of Mary, the other member of their retribution-themed trio. The future is looking bright, but then it becomes clear that Mary is neither gone nor happy with their life choices. I read the first book of this trilogy way back in 2014 and, while I enjoyed it well enough, I wasn’t blown away. This spring, though, I had the sudden urge to read the next two books, and they were both a wonderful mix of affecting human drama and ludicrously soapy plot twists.
16. The Charm School by Susan Wiggs (1999)
Isadora Peabody, the awkward scion of an otherwise graceful old Bostonian family in the 1850s, decides to take her fate in her own hands and become a translator on a merchant ship bound for Brazil. The captain, freewheeling Ryan Calhoun, isn’t too happy with this unusual arrangement, but he comes to admire and sympathize with the independent-minded and painfully self-conscious Isadora. At the same time, Isadora realizes that Ryan’s untidiness and occasional bouts of drunkenness disguise a heart and principles and a talent for making out in lush Brazilian gardens. I was absolutely delighted by this romance novel, which is an absolute romp with some terrific character development.
15. The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness (2009)
In the middle book of the Chaos Walking trilogy, the protagonists reach the end of a long journey, only to find themselves separated and caught between two warring factions. This installment does a great job of elaborating upon the world introduced in the first book, offering new perspectives on old characters, and introducing compelling new conflicts.
14. Fire with Fire by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian (2013)
In the middle book of the Burn for Burn trilogy, classmates Kat, Lillia, and Mary deal with the fallout of their semi-successful Strangers on a Train-lite revenge scheme. Kat and Lillia want to call it quits, but their sympathy for Mary causes them to agree to one last score, so to speak. Unfortunately, FEELINGS and PAST TRAUMA and DANGEROUS PSYCHIC POWERS complicate matters. Despite my love for Ashes to Ashes, Fire with Fire has a special place in my heart because it’s the first book to explore the characters’ emotions in depth, as well as the first one to go way over the fucking top.
13. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (2018)
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a rash of horrifying home invasion rapes, seemingly meticulously planned, plagued the bedroom communities of Sacramento. Then a series of uncannily similar home invasion murders broke out in the Southern California. In this book published after her death in 2016, McNamara makes the case that this was the work of one person, dubbed the Golden State Killer. McNamara has a clear, humane way of describing grisly and/or convoluted events, and her portrait of the dark side of California suburbia is enthralling.
12. The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (1998)
In 1960, a dangerously determined and self-righteous reverend from the American South travels to the Belgian Congo, even though his own church begged him not to go. He makes the questionable decision to take his exhausted wife and four daughters--vain Rachel, suck-up Leah, nearly mute Adah, and baby Ruth May--along with him. Their new home is a shock to all of them in various ways, and that’s before a personal tragedy and the Congo Crisis enter the picture. Kingsolver makes excellent use of her five viewpoint characters, all of whom have distinctive voices and enjoyably unpredictable (yet entirely appropriate) character arcs.
11. Lighter than My Shadow by Katie Green (2013)
As a young child, Katie has seemingly minor issues around food, but during adolescence she develops a serious eating disorder and almost starves herself to death. A diagnosis and the ensuing support of her parents seem to signal hope, but recovery is more complicated that one might expect. This graphic memoir offers a nuanced portrait of the sheer range of stuff that gets wrapped up in an eating disorder: religion, gender, sex, control, trauma, the desire for independence, and so much more. Green’s “cute” art style enhances the story, both because it makes an interesting contrast to the upsetting material and because it grounds the reader in the humanity of the characters.
10. Mindhunter by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker (1995)
Throughout the 1970s, FBI agent John Douglas, along with the rest of the Investigative Support Unit, compiled information about an increasingly common type of criminal: the serial killer. Gradually, they developed the practice of criminal profiling. As gruesome as it might sound to call this an excellent beach read, that’s essentially how I experienced it (not that I went anywhere this summer, but still). The pace is fast, the style is engaging, and the authors are frank but not overly lurid in their presentation of the nasty details.
9. The Beggar Maid by Alice Munro (1977)
In this collection of connected short stories, Rose, a bright Canadian girl, grows up in a rough, deprived neighborhood with her sick, stern father and prickly but not unloving stepmother. Life in the wider world brings her mingled pride and shame at her background, a largely disastrous early marriage, and eventually a satisfying but decidedly unglamorous acting career. Munro is a master of description, and she has a sense of fun that puts her head and shoulders above most short story writers. And the title story is just the most perfectly painful exploration of why someone would stay with a partner who is deeply wrong for them.
8. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (2009)
In 1985, seven-year-old Libby Day narrowly escaped death at the hands of her teenage brother, but her mother and two older sisters weren’t so lucky. Except that Libby doesn’t feel so lucky, either, because she’s thirty-one years old with massive trauma, dwindling funds, and few adult life skills. Then a true-crime enthusiast contacts her with an offer: cash in return for investigating whether her brother was actually the murderer. Dark Places may be the awkward middle child of Flynn’s novels, but that reputation is undeserved; it has a thrilling plot, a perversely lovable heroine, and a sly critique of the “Morning in America” view of the 1980s.
7. The Hostage by Susan Wiggs (2000)
In the confusion of the Great Chicago Fire, frontiersman Tom Silver kidnaps heiress Deborah Sinclair, hoping to force her industrialist father into compensating the victims of his negligence. He’s not prepared, though, for her dogged escape attempts, her hard-earned resilience, or the hints that something was horribly wrong in her life even before the kidnapping. I had my doubts about reading a kidnapping romance, but Susan Wiggs proved me wrong. (It helps that Tom’s motives are both understandable AND not presented as an excuse for dragging Deborah into his revenge plan.) The super-slow-burn romance pairs wonderfully with the action-packed plot, and I love Deborah so much.
6. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn (2006)
Troubled reporter Camille Preaker returns to her small Missouri hometown to investigate the grisly murder of one tween girl and the ominous disappearance of another. As upsetting as the case is, it doesn’t hold a candle to what waits for her at home: a softly cruel mother, a barely there stepfather, and a teenage half-sister who alternates between adoring Camille and tormenting her. Sharp Objects entirely deserves its reputation as the best (if not most popular) Flynn novel; it has a beautifully constructed plot, descriptions so lush that you feel like you can reach out and touch Wind Gap (not that you’d want to), and a deeply flawed yet admirable heroine.
5. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness (2008)
At nearly thirteen, Todd Hewitt is the youngest resident of Prentisstown, and nobody is ever going to take that distinction away from him. Just after his birth, a plague killed most of the humans on New World, including every woman and girl. What’s more, the same plague made it so the thoughts of men (and most other living creatures) are audible to all. And the mayor of Prentisstown is a religious fanatic who won’t let anyone watch videos or teach kids to read. It’s...not awesome. Then Todd makes a shocking discovery that forces him to flee his community and question everything he knows. This book is a fascinating sci-fi take on the frontier horror story (ala The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, and, more recently, The Witch) with a read-hundreds-of-pages-a-night plot and astonishing moment of wonder.
4. After the Wedding by Courtney Milan (2018)
Lady Camilla Worth, daughter of an earl who committed suicide to avoid treason charges, has passed from home to unwelcoming home ever since, finally ending up as an unknown housemaid. Adrian Hunter, a mixed-race ceramics heir on a desperate mission to make his family happy, happens to visit the house where she’s employed. Under some very strange circumstances, they’re forced to wed at literal gunpoint. Working together to unravel the mystery and get an annulment, they grow to like each other, which complicates things. This is one of my favorite romance novels ever, with wonderful characters (especially Camilla!), an explosive plot, and masterfully explored themes of healing and being true to oneself.
3. Wild Things: The Joy of Reading Children's Literature as an Adult by Bruce Handy (2017)
A famous magazine writer and father of two young children, Handy expounds upon the classics of children’s literature (The Cat in the Hat, Goodnight Moon, the Little House series, Narnia, the Ramona books, etc.). As someone who frequently rereads the favorites of my youth to de-stress (House of Stairs 5eva), the subject was tailor-made for me, and Handy’s execution is impressive. He covers an amazing amount of ground, switches deftly from one mode of analysis to another, and shares plenty of funny anecdotes and moving reflections on parenthood.
2. Blankets by Craig Thompson (2003)
In this autobiographical graphic novel, Craig, a creative, devout, and deeply lonely teenager in rural Wisconsin, meets his first love, Raina, at a church retreat that otherwise would’ve been miserable. They become pen pals and are finally able to arrange for him to spend a few complicated, wonderful weeks with her and her family. Their relationship and its subsequent fallout drive him to confront his conflicted feelings about his faith, his art, and his family. This is an absolutely beautiful story, complemented perfectly by the wintry landscapes and expressive human figures.
1. Breath by Donna Jo Napoli (2003)
Salz, a twelve-year-old boy in medieval Saxony, is dismissed and sometimes even reviled by most of his community, including his own father and brothers, for the unnamed illness that stunts his growth and makes it difficult to breathe. Still, he’s got a lot going on; he helps his beloved grandmother around the house, studies for the priesthood, and belongs to a secret coven. When an abnormally wet spring drives the rats indoors and causes a strange disease to spread among the locals, Salz’s sharp intellect and thirst for knowledge are more needed than ever. This novel is a historically grounded retelling of “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” where the protagonist has cystic fibrosis, and did I ever think I would type that combination of words? No, I did not, but I am so glad things worked out that way. Napoli’s treatment of disability is unusually gratifying, because she illustrates the essential things that a society loses when it dismisses the sick and disabled (as well as some other marginalized groups, such as women). At the same time, Salz’s family and neighbors aren’t cruel for the sake of cruelty; they’re just uninformed, scared, and/or bad at managing their own problems without lashing out at others, which does not absolve them but makes for a more thoughtful story than if they were just bad seeds. The portrayal of Salz’s struggles to reconcile the different sources of wisdom in his life--Church orthodoxy, pagan folk practices, and the knowledge slowly filtering in from the Arabic world--is also fascinating, plus the pathological mystery makes for a tight, exciting plot. All this in less than 300 pages! And do not get me started on how much I love Großmutter.
When Dan answered the call, his face was red and puffed and wet. Even through the crap-pixel screen quality, Phil could see that.
“Hey,” Dan’s voice broke.
“Hi,”
Dan was shaking slightly.
His face suddenly flushed, “Oh shit, I forgot – I’m, uh, in only pants. In front of you. Crap.”
“It’s fine, I’ve seen you shirtless before.” Phil smiled what he hoped was reassuringly, “Are you okay?”
“Yeah — I mean, I am now. I guess.”
“Are you cold?”
“Kinda.” Dan admitted.
“Want to go to bed?”
“My room is too dark –”
“Well, I’ll be there, wont I? And I’ll protect you from everything bad in the dark.”
“You’re not really here.”
“Only ever a few hours away. And if worst comes to worst, I have the police line and the monster-killer line. So you’ll be super safe.”
Dan muffled a giggle, “Yeah, okay.”
He shuffled up off the floor, and made his way into his bedroom, clutching the laptop tightly.
“I dunno if I’m getting any sleep tonight, honestly.”
“You will! You can cuddle your pillow and I’ll tell you stories until the demons go away and you can sleep.”
“I’m not five, Phil.” There was no malice in his reply.
“You don’t need to be five for any of that to be true.” Phil said, serious tone.
“Okay,”
Minutes later, Dan was snuggled under his covers; hugging a pillow tightly as he listened to Phil go on about some guy at the market.
“Then, he pulled a hot dog out of his left pocket. Who keeps a single —”
“Phil?” Dan interrupted, his voice was dripping with sleep.
“Mm?”
“Do you think I’m stupid?”
“No.” Phil answered simply.
“I mean – for being so scared of such dumb stuff. Seven-year-olds are braver than me.”
“It’s okay to have fears, Dan. I bet you’re not the only adult with those fears either,”
“I’m scared of the dark. And ghosts and monsters and moths and demons and –”
“– and that’s fine. I don’t mind.”
“And it’s not annoying to deal with? I’m not?”
“You will never be annoying to ‘deal with’; I promise.”
Phil meant it.
[Incoming call from Dan]
“Hi!” Dan really should be quieter; last time he called Phil at three in the morning his dad had yelled at him.
“Hi,” Phil’s sleep-laced voice answered.
A booming crack of thunder, and a whimper.
“Don’t worry – it… won’t hurt you.” Despite everything, Dan was sometimes still quite new to the role of 'comfort’ in their relationship.
“I know, just loud.”
Dan wished he was like Phil. He wished he could just pull out an intresting story, a funny idea.
“Sorry.”
He wasn’t like Phil, though.
“Want to play a game?”
“What game could we possibly play through a phone call?” Dan could practically hear Phil rolling his eyes.
Dan wracked his brain for quick ideas.
“Eye-Spy?”
“We’re… not in the same room Dan.”
“Yeah, true.”
Dan’s room suddenly felt rather empty and uninteresting.
Dan felt empty and uninteresting.
“What do you want me to do?” He finally muttered.
He held his breath.
“I just like hearing your voice, it calms me down. I like when you rant about things you love.”
Let it out.
“Oh. Well – want to hear my never-ending thoughts on WALL-E then?”
“Definitely.”
——
[Sunday; 02.04.18; 04:12]
——
“Phil?”
“Mhm?” He rolled over and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, “What’re you doing up?”
“There was a moth.”
“A moth?”
“Yes!” Dan looked around the room nervously, rolling on his heels, “It’s in the lounge somewhere and I can’t sleep knowing it’s out there — lurking.”
Phil groaned.
“Fucking kill it! Or set it free, I dunno. I just need it gone.”
“You are truly the perfect mix of 'needy child’ and 'angry businessman’, Danny.”
“Fuck off.”
“Mm, lemme get a cup then.”
Phil shoved on his glasses and stumbled out of bed into the kitchen, Dan following closely behind.
“Where was it again?” He asked, grabbing a wine glass from the cupboard.
They hadn’t really drank much alcohol these past few years– since Dan had gone on antidepressents— but they still always kept the glasses, to drink Ribena and seem fancy.
“No! You’ll need a bigger cup, it’s huge.” He whined.
“Okay,” he grabbed another glass, “where is it?”
“In the lounge last I saw.”
“I’ll go look, you get a piece of paper.”
Genuine terror painted over Dan’s face, “I don’t want to be alone.”
“Christ’s sake Dan, it’s a moth, not an armed burglar. I think you’ll live.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do. Now, just go a minute.”
He then ventured into the lounge, still half-drowned by sleep, when he heard a shriek.
“Dan?”
“Phil! Fucking help!”
Anyone else might’ve thought Dan was being held at gunpoint from the panicked way he was yelling.
“Coming!”
He went into the hall; Dan was standing there, paralysed with fear, as a giant moth flew circles around him. He had tears threatening to fall.
“Oh dear,”
Phil went over to the closet and grabbed a broom, spent a few go’s waving it around– and almost hitting Dan in the process— before smacking it head on.
“Aw, now I feel bad for killing it,” He whispered.
Dan was on the floor now, shaking, tears stained down his cheeks. He was in only pants.
And Phil was there.
“Well, the moth’s gone now isn’t it?” He crouched down next to Dan, putting his hands gently on his shoulders.
“Mmm,” Dan had his head tucked in his knees.
“Are you okay?”
Silence.
“That’s fine. Want me to make you some tea?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay.”
A few minutes later, in the kitchen, with dried cheeks; “I can’t believe how much of a wimp I am.”
The kettle rang, and Phil took it off the stove carefully.
“No —”
“I know, I know, my therapist told me. 'It’s never weak to have fears’. But I cried over a fucking moth. In our hallway. It’s late and –”
“– and that’s okay.”
“It’s not okay Phil!”
“It’s fine in the moment, that’s what I mean.”
He grabbed a NASA mug, and poured the boiling water in a teapot.
“I must be exhausting.”
Phil dropped in a teabag.
He still remembered. It was a promise made at 4am; a promise over Skype to a more-than-slightly-terrified eighteen year old.
A promise made to a bunch of pixel’s with a name and a face and fear.
A promise his Dan probably didn’t even remember, honestly.
“No, I promised that much.”
“Mhm,”
He poured the tea.
“So, two sugars or three?”
“Two.”
[Friday; 02.16.18; 05:12]
——
Dan was on the sofa; snuggled up in blankets and watching the winter Olympics through his small Iphone screen. His eyes were heavy, he yawned.
Their bedroom door squeaked opened.
“Hey,” Phil spoke quietly.
“Up so late?”
“You’re up too.”
“Well — I’m watching the Olympics. You know it’s on late in the UK.”
“Alright.” Phil shuffled into the kitchen, grabbing a glass and leaving the cupboard door wide open.
“Why are you awake?”
“Just another nightmare, s'fine.”
“Then why did you come out here?”
His voice might’ve been read as upset – he was just tired. Half the time Dan honestly didn’t mean to come off so rude.
“Dunno,”
“What was it about?”
“Uh — I think my family was trapped, you included, and I was the only person who could save them. But I had to do something… I think, I had to open a lock to somewhere? But I was too nervous. I saw everyone die; I knew it was my fault. I saw – you know, blood. Not too much. But it’s fine.”
As he spoke, he went over to the sink and got a glass of water, adding iced-cubes; his tone was unnaturally cool and casual.
“But I heard your skull shatter –”
“What the fuck —”
“Sorry! You asked though.”
“No – I mean, that’s horrible. Jesus christ, are you okay?”
Phil shrugged, “It happens, it’s okay though. Just a dream.”
It was only at that moment Dan noticed Phil’s eyes were a little too redded, his words a little bit shaky.
Phil started back to their room.
“Are you going back to sleep?”
“Probably.” His reply was tired.
“Oh – uh, well, why don’t you stay with me and watch the Olympics? I know you’ve never really cared, not your thing, but still I think that —”
“Sure! I’ll stay, yeah.” Phil quickly answered.
“Okay.”
Phil put his glass of water back down on the counter, and walked over to the sofa. Dan opened up his blanket fort and invited Phil in.
“These are the men’s single runs.”
“Mhm,” Phil nuzzled his head into Dan’s neck, which usually would’ve bothered him, but he didn’t mind so much.
A few minutes pass, “So what’s that guy supposed to be doing? I need your commentary; you know.”
I just like hearing your voice, it calms me down.
“Well, that’s the Japanese lead skater, which means —”
